Modern approach FROM CONTEMPORARY ITALIAN STYLES TO TRADITIONAL BRITISH LOOKS, YOU’LL FIND IT ALL UNDER ONE ROOF AT BAKER STUDIO. hen it comes to revamping our homes, sometimes we don’t know what we want until its right in front of us. With bedroom, dining room and living room settings in four unique styles, there is plenty of inspiration at Baker Studio. Baker Studio are a long-established, familyowned, furniture business with branches in Wakefield and Batley. The Wakefield branch opts for a mixture of classic and commercial designs, whilst the Batley branch, located inside interior department store, Redbrick Mill, has a more modern approach. The Batley showroom is divided into four distinct ranges; Baker Studio, Natuzzi, Halo and Alexander & James. Starting with Baker Studio’s signature range, you will find a blend of contemporary styles, with sofas and chairs in a selection of playfully patterned and textured materials. Comfort is their main priority, and here you will find some of the softest and best-quality fabrics around. This is coupled with modern and sturdy wooden and glass tables, drawers and occasional pieces. The brand new Alexander & James range is grounded in a Great British heritage style. You will find sofas, armchairs and stools in warm

shades of browns and beiges, with brightcoloured contemporary cushions, bringing this style right up to date. The rustic Hudson collection encompasses this perfectly, whilst the simple-look, brown leather Lawrence collection is their best-seller and a firm family favourite. Natuzzi Italia is a distinctly modern Italian brand, which offers some of the most high-end handmade chairs, sofas, beds and smart storage solutions. All of the furniture in this range is colour coordinated with accessories and rugs in relaxing shades of grey, white and beige. The great thing about Natuzzi’s range is that the shelves and tables, rugs and lighting harmoniously go together to create a lifestyle setting. But the most impressive thing about the range is its smooth reclining sofas and chairs, including the Revive and Philo collection, which fully supports your body and provides maximum comfort. Take advantage of the Natuzzi sale now on. Finally, the Halo range combines retro-style with modern living. Here you will find tables made from reclaimed driftwood and chests made from wooden planks of school gymflooring. Coupled with bright diamante lighting and warm brown leather sofas and
chairs, this range will provide an eclectic and charming look to your home. Whatever look inspires you and whatever you choose, managing director Stephen Baker and his knowledgeable team are on hand to help. “Our ethos is to provide quality and affordability,” says Stephen. “The settings in our showrooms are always changing. I visit lots of trade exhibitions so there is always a new collection to explore, as well as special offers and sales running throughout the year. “We also offer interest free credit and have our very own expert delivery team to deliver to customers locally and nationwide.” So whether you are looking for comfort or practicality, modern Italian style or a traditional British look with a twist, you will find them all under one roof at Baker Studio. DEAR DOCTOR... Mr Sushil Maslekar FRCS Ed, MD, is a consultant general and colorectal surgeon at Spire Leeds Hospital and Leeds NHS Teaching Hospitals Trust. He is a leading consultant in laparoscopic (keyhole), robotic and open surgery. Question
I suffer with haemorrhoids (piles) and have been advised that there is now a less invasive painless treatment as alternative to more invasive surgical options. What is involved and what are benefits and advantages over current treatment options for me?

Answer
Haemorrhoids are so common that most people have them at some point in their lives. Symptoms include visible protruding veins, swelling, pain, itching and sometimes instances of bright red blood on toilet tissue These symptoms can be caused by other conditions which may include colon or rectal cancer and therefore it is important to make an accurate, early diagnosis. Haemorrhoids can be treated “conservatively” which means using non-surgical measures such as improvements to diet, application of creams etc. in order to improve milder symptoms. Other more invasive treatments such as banding can shrink haemorrhoids, but benefits are usually short-lived. If symptoms get worse, haemorrhoids can be surgically removed (a procedure called a haemorrhoidectomy). More recently, a new, non-invasive technique called the Rafaelo® procedure has been developed to treat haemorrhoids under local anaesthetic without the need for invasive surgery and lengthy hospital stay. The Rafaelo® Procedure is an effective treatment for internal haemorrhoids and involves the use of radiofrequency waves to reduce the size of the haemorrhoid and eliminate symptoms. Patients are admitted to hospital as daycases and go home the same day. Patients having the new, Rafaelo procedure have reported minimal post-operative pain, if any at all, and are able to return to normal daily activities almost immediately If you are suffering from rectal bleeding or are worried about any symptoms speak to your GP the first instance who can refer you to a colorectal specialist. For more information about Rafaelo® and colorectal services contact the Private Patient Team at Spire Leeds Hospital Tel 0113 2185977 For further information please contact: info@spireleeds.com Spire Leeds Hospital Tel. 0113 218 5967/77 Email: info@spireleeds.com

Cohabitation v marriage: what the differences can mean for you JULIA BURNS, ASSOCIATE SOLICITOR IN THE WILL, TRUST AND ESTATE DISPUTES TEAM AT IRWIN MITCHELL, EXPLORES THE ISSUES. eciding whether or not to get married is an extremely personal choice, and to some couples might be their least-preferred option. The concept of cohabiting presents many benefits: thousands of pounds saved from not having a wedding and a stress-free split if a couple decides to part ways. However, there is no denying that the state is in favour of marriage, and there may be more benefits to getting married the older that you get. When it comes to the tax implications of marriage versus cohabiting, marriage is the clear winner. Married partners receive inheritance tax breaks which cohabitating couples are not entitled to: spouses can transfer wealth to their partner without any inheritance tax, and they can transfer any remaining inheritance tax thresholds to their spouse. Cohabitating couples do not have either of these breaks. The new extra inheritance tax allowance, linked to the value of the home, is not available to the survivor, when one of an unmarried couple dies. Nor are the children of an unmarried partner within the definition of “stepchildren” who can benefit from the new allowance. Married couples can also transfer assets from one to the other, or share them, without capital gains tax, allowing them to make the maximum use of their annual allowances and lower rates of tax when those assets are sold. This is a break not given to unmarried couples. There’s also the income tax breaks available to married couples and not to cohabiting partners. The Marriage Allowance allows couples to transfer £1,150 of their personal tax allowance to their spouse or civil partner if they earn more. Again, cohabiting couples do not receive this tax break. This example

only applies to a small group, but is demonstrative of how cohabiting couples are penalised by the state and the law for not being married. For older couples who are not married but are living together, there is the risk of dying intestate or having not updated their will to include the partner they lived with. This can mean that if one partner dies and is separated but not divorced from a former spouse of theirs, any assets and wealth will pass on to their spouse, or commonly their children, rather than the partner they live with if no provisions are made in a will.
Julia Burns
A spouse on the other hand may well inherit their partner’s estate automatically under intestacy, and even if they do not, they will be afforded more in a claim for financial provision against their partner’s estate. Such claims are not limited to meeting their maintenance needs.” It is clear that the bias towards married couples over those who are cohabiting is outdated and does not reflect the reality of modern society. Increasingly, couples of all ages are choosing cohabitation and are in need of legal guidance, but we especially urge the older cohort to seek specialist advice as older
‘For older couples who are not married but are living together, there is the risk of dying intestate or having not updated their will to include the partner they lived with. This can mean that if one partner dies and is separated but not divorced from a former spouse of theirs, any assets and wealth will pass on to their spouse, or commonly their children, rather than the partner they live with if no provisions are made in a will.’ Julia Burns, an Associate Solicitor in the Will, Trust and Estate Disputes team, said: “Without any provision, cohabiting partners can be left in financial peril, and in the worst cases, destitute. Their only remedy may be to bring court proceedings for financial provision against their partner’s estate at a time when they are emotionally fragile having lost a loved one. This is not only stressful and upsetting, but can prove costly and lead to a lengthy period of financial uncertainty. Moreover, any claim brought by a cohabiting partner against their partner’s estate is limited to meeting their maintenance needs which can mean little more than sufficient to meet their day to day living expenses.
couples may sadly lose their partner and see no rights to their partner’s estate. We can support you, your family and business with important decisions to ensure that your future plans are realised and brought to life. Exploring your options can go a long way and allow you to have clarity, peace of mind, and focus on the important things in life – Irwin Mitchell Private Wealth are best placed to achieve this for you.

Get into golf with Harrogate Golf Club HAVE YOU EVER CONSIDERED JOINING A GOLF CLUB? IF SO, NOW IS THE PERFECT TIME. et in the gently undulating North Yorkshire countryside, all abilities and ages of golfers are welcome at Harrogate Golf Club (HGC), including juniors, ladies and gentlemen, with great offers for casual golf, societies and corporate groups. The colonial style clubhouse is brimming with comfort and character, and the mature parkland course, which benefits from spectacular floral displays in the spring, provides a beautiful setting for an enjoyable round or lesson. Located only two miles from the centre of Harrogate, and respected country-wide for its warm welcome and excellent facilities, the current course measures a little less than 6,250 yards, on easy walking terrain, and is widely regarded as a fair test of golf, requiring accuracy rather than distance off the tee. Its Mackenzie-designed greens and tree-lined fairways provide an enjoyable challenge for all handicaps, and the course is always presented in first class condition. There are subtly placed bunkers and copses of trees that require the golfer to adopt careful thought and accuracy in order to better their par, and the final six holes on the course include five testing par 4s, making this one of Yorkshire’s toughest finishing stretches.
S
Growing the game Golf is often wrongly perceived as a man’s game and HGC are working hard to shift this perception. “Golf is a game for all,” says club manager, Adrian Wratting. “The unique handicap system allows people of different abilities to play and compete together, making it a great game for women, children and men alike.” Class AA PGA Qualified Professionals, Sam Everson and Gary Stothard, provide lessons for all abilities and ages of golfers, and can impart the basic skills and techniques needed to get you started. Or, for the more experienced player, help take your game to the next level. In a relaxed and friendly environment, there’s the option to play nine or 18 holes, and lady members can also opt into the buddy system. Each session is tailored to the golfer’s ability and Sam and Gary use the v1 Coaching system to capture your swing on video, for analysis both during your lesson and during practice away from the lesson.
Northside’s Lisa Dawson and daughter, HalleRose were invited to the club to take part in a one-on-one mother and daughter lesson. Halle had played golf for some time but Lisa was new to the game, so we got her set up and taught her how to grip correctly, and she hit some really great shots in the practice area. We then moved over to the short game area – we’re actually one of the only clubs in the area with a short game facility – and focused on developing basic set up, driving, iron play, chipping and putting. Sam Everson HGC is a beautiful club and we enjoyed an informative and educational, but at the same time, very relaxed lesson. Sam was patient and took his time and really made us feel at ease. He helped both Halle and I improve our games dramatically. Lisa Dawson Because I’ve played before, Sam helped me improve on things I’d already learnt, taking my game to the next level and significantly improving my technique. Halle-Rose
This autumn, make Harrogate Golf Club your choice for learning to play. And, right now, there is no better time, as new members can take advantage of the academy membership, available from £199, which includes tuition, use of all practice facilities and unlimited social use of the clubhouse, for you to invite along you family or friends for a drink or a bite to eat. Sam and Gary are also offering a 45-minute parent and child lesson for just £20 (saving £12). For further details, call the club on 01423 862999 and ask for Adrian.

Life on the ocean A NEW FILM FESTIVAL, COMING TO LEEDS AND HARROGATE, LOOKS AT LIFE ABOVE AND BELOW THE WATER. From the film, Sea Gypsies
he Ocean Film Festival is returning this autumn for the fourth year bringing an evening of inspirational and jaw-dropping ocean films to venues across Britain and Northern Ireland. On 21-22 September the phenomenal festival will be heading to both Leeds Town Hall and Harrogate Royal Hall to provide audiences will a once in a lifetime experience to witness the spell-binding footage of the world’s ocean. The event originated in Australia and features a selection of the world’s best ocean films with impressive footage from both above and below the water. This years’ programme sees intrepid freedivers exploring shipwrecks, nomadic sailors facing the icy waters of Antarctica along with a glimpse at marine wildlife including humpback wales. Here’s one of the festival directors, Nell
T
28 Northside | www.northsidemagazine.co.uk
Tisdall taking about what we can expect from this year’s festival. What was the inspiration behind the festival?
After seeing people’s positive reactions to our mountain genre at Banff film festival, we saw the need for sharing the passion across the ocean too. Everyone has a big connection to the ocean one way or another and to be able to share the films that celebrate it is incredible. What are you looking forward to this year?
The whole evening is a great mix of ocean adventure and conservation films, so people feel like they are being taken on a real journey over the seven films. We have the Sea Gypsies which is a real adventure film focusing on a group of people doing a hardcore sailing trip from New Zealand to Patagonia – via Antarctica. There’s an awesome film that takes a look at deep sea marine life and the creatures are out of this world. Over the seven films there are some great conservation messages and each film shows a snapshot into different ocean stories.
What does the film festival bring to the local communities?
It gives them a unique night out in venues that don’t usually showcase films. It brings ocean adventure to life and hopefully people will come away inspired to do something with the ocean, whether that’s take up surfing, sailing or simply picking up rubbish at the beach. We have some fantastic films that celebrate how people interact with the oceans and what it means to them. The films will hopefully spark conversation and make people aware of the conservation issues the films focus on. We carry the messages from the films right to each venue as this year we are encouraging the hosts to use less plastic and recycle more. Why should people come and see the film festival?
As there will be seven different films, there really is something for everybody. Each one concentrates on the people and their stories which are relatable. They will be full of beautiful footage and imagery, leaving the audience speechless. It a brilliant chance to share something you love with others in positive atmosphere and people are sure to come away inspired. For more information visit www.oceanfilmfestival.co.uk
People from the past DISCOVER THE SECRETS UNDERFOOT AT LEEDS CITY MUSEUM. s we go about our busy lives, little do we imagine that below our feet lie the bones of generations of our predecessors. Excavations for re-development have uncovered a range of skeletons hidden beneath our streets, sometimes from familiar landmarks and at other times the most banal of locations. Skeletons: Our Buried Bones is an exhibition bringing together stories of deaths over centuries. The exhibition is part of a collaboration between Wellcome Trust in partnership with the Museum of London. Two previous versions have been curated at Glasgow and Bristol, each featuring skeletons local to each museum, as well as from the Museum of London collection. The final exhibition will be on display at Leeds City Museum from 22 September until 7 January 2018. Katherine Baxter, the Curator of Archaeology, has been with Leeds Museums and Galleries for 12 years, previously working on exhibitions such as Pharaoh: King of Egypt and Roman Empire: Power and People, both in partnership with the British Museum. She also works on displays at Leeds City Museum and Kirkstall Abbey. Over the past year, Katherine has been working on the Skeletons exhibition, which displays seven skeletons from Yorkshire along with five from London.
A
“The idea of this exhibition is to explore what you can tell from somebody’s life by looking at what evidence is written on their bones along with how and where they were buried,” says Katherine. “As well as the skeletons in the main exhibition, Leeds Museum Galleries have developed the Leeds Lab, an area where visitors can learn from hands-on activities about skeletons. Visitors can also explore the museum’s collection and ethics around display.” “We are interested in how our visitors feel about museums having and displaying human remains. The skeletons range in age from prehistoric up to post-medieval and each provides a personal snapshot of a different point in time,” adds Katherine “I’m really looking forward to seeing people’s reactions. We have some fabulous events planned around the exhibition including tours and a symposium in October. I am hoping people really engage with the exhibition and feel like they have connected with people from the past.”

Confetti
Set your wedding free It’s the biggest day of your life, so flout convention and create a stunning wedding to remember.
B
ack in the day, your only wedding venue options were church or registry office and the reception tended to take place at your local pub or working men’s club. But in recent years brides and grooms have become much more imaginative. Every couple has different needs and tastes when it comes to planning their big day and this year’s trends are sure to suit everyone, whether you are looking for an outdoor, indoor, traditional or modern setting. If you are baffled about where to even begin planning your wedding, read on for some inspiration and to find out what types of venues are on trend for 2017.
Confetti The beach The beach trend is by no means a new concept, but with flights to European holiday destinations cheaper and easier to book than ever (thank the internet gods), sunny weddings by the coast are much more plausible than they used to be. And the best part? You are already on your honeymoon too. Find a hotel with a honeymoon suite and reception space with a beautiful white beach nearby, and you will have the perfect package. If you looking for a simple yet stunning setting, with near guaranteed sunshine, a beach wedding is most certainly for you. If you are piecing together your own beach wedding, The Knot has plenty of handy advice at www.theknot.com/beach-weddings
The industrial space
The outdoors
An old factory or warehouse may sound far from your fairy tale wedding venue, but an increasing number of couples are falling in love with disused industrial spaces because they offer high ceilings, plenty of open space to play with and ever-so-on-trend exposed brick work. Whether you’d like to go rustic with fairy lights, wildflowers and jam jar candles, or more sophisticated in style, with dressed tables and chairs, an industrial space makes for a brilliant blank canvas. What’s more, these types of venues tend to be conveniently located in the city centre, making them easy for guests to get to. If you are looking for an industrial style wedding, check out an inspirational list of Yorkshire venues at www.yorkshirerosebrides.com/2017/06/11/ seven-industrial-yorkshire-wedding-venueslove
Getting married in the great outdoors can be an amazing experience, as long as you prepare for the variable British weather, of course. From woodlands to open fields, beautiful natural views can mean you don’t need much in the way of decorations. However, you may want an indoor area such as a marquee or building to have your reception in if the weather does change. Many people are also coupling this kind of setting with a boutique festival theme. UK law previously stated that you could not marry outside, in a tent, marquee or any other temporary structure. However, as of 2015, outdoor weddings are now allowed provided the venue obtain an additional licence. Confetti The hotel On the subject of hotels, in recent years, this venue has really stepped up its game. Previously, simply a place to go back to for drinks and photos in their lush gardens, many hotels offer wedding packages as a standard now. Hotels in the countryside with historic architecture provide a picturesque backdrop for your ceremony and the beauty of it is that while they are switching your room around for the reception, there is sure to be a stunning foyer and classy bar to mingle in. If you are looking for a smart and sophisticated setting, few places get it spot on like a grand hotel, which often have their own in-house wedding planners. Hand Picked Hotels do exactly what they say on the tin and list hundreds of the best hotels for weddings around the UK. Find out more at www.handpickedhotels.co.uk/weddings
The barn Barns continue to be a popular option, which suit the equally popular rustic and shabby chic wedding looks – get those jam jars, worn wooden chairs and fairy lights at the ready. These are usually based on working farms, but there are also disused barns that have been bought and renovated by party organisers who put the venue up for hire. If this is the case, they are also very likely to do a lot of the setting up and wedding planning for you. Again this is a great venue that can be transformed from a hall for your ceremony, to a dancefloor and banqueting area. And as these venues tend to be away from residential areas, you can make a bit of noise and party til the early hours. Get hitched in a rustic barn or under a thatched gazebo surrounded by the north Yorkshire moors at Ox Pasture Hall. To find out more visit www.oxpasturehallhotel.com/weddings/barn-wedding
The lounge area
The treehouse
At the other end of the scale, more couples are looking into comfy, home-like wedding venues, with a relaxed party atmosphere. This kind of venue can be found almost anywhere. Some are upstairs spaces in bars, which resemble living rooms, whilst some hotels offer smaller, cosier rooms as well as their typically bigger more luxurious offerings. Function rooms in fashionable pubs with big armchairs and booths are a great option, as they tend to have their own bar area so you won’t have to fight strangers to get served. There are also countless furniture rental firms around the country, both retro and modern. So you can provide the right tables and chairs to suit your style. If you are looking for smaller wedding venues, there are all kinds to choose from at www.hitched.co.uk/small-hotel-weddingvenues
Combining two themes we have already touched upon, a treehouse offers the simple and rustic charm of the barn with the natural charm of the forest. A treehouse often being a childhood dream, those young at heart will jump at the chance to perform their nuptials here. Thought of as of being quite unconventional in the past, this option is becoming a lot more widely considered. What is more, a gorgeous forest will make a fantastic backdrop for photos – let’s just hope none of your wedding guests are afraid of heights. The Lodge in Scotland is a great place to start and it helps that our neighbouring country has looser laws when it comes to outdoor weddings. Find out more at www.thelodgescotland.com/weddings

PROMOTION
Samsøe & Samsøe collections are now in store
Danish brand Rains produce outerwear that is both stylish and practical
Cool quality CLEAN, SCANDINAVIAN STYLES – AND MUCH MORE – HAVE PROVED A HUGE HIT AT THIS NEW HARROGATE STORE. here was a time when all of the best fashion boutiques were based in the south and you had to travel to London to find outfits that were unique and on-trend. But thanks to independent stores such as Bias, all that has changed. Bias Peckham opened in South London in 2012, and after quickly growing into a highly sought-after lifestyle store for stylish Londoners and out-of-town shoppers alike, founder Sally Hindle opened a second store in Harrogate in September 2016. The Harrogate store is continually bringing new and unique labels to the area, with a focus on clothing and shoes for women and men. “We pride ourselves on the curation of high-quality, Scandinavian and European labels for men and women, independent designers, fair-trade jewellers and local makers,” says Sally. “We recently closed both stores over the summer to refresh them for the launch of our autumn 2017 collection. We’ve brightened up the Harrogate store by redecorating the shop front and inside too, and both stores are now open for business.” Sally has had a varied working background having worked as a teacher for 30 years and a head teacher for 15 of these, mostly in London. However, she has always had a love of clothes and an interest in the fashion industry.
T
“One day my friends asked, ‘what became of the dress shop idea?’ and I realised the time had come to pursue a new career.” Sally decided to focus on Scandinavian labels because of their clean lines, quality and wear-ability. It was the introduction of a very new look to Harrogate, and whether you are in your twenties or fifties, there is something to suit everyone. There’s still nothing quite like this Scandi style on the high street and Sally and her team regularly go to trade shows such as the Copenhagen International Fashion Show to stay ahead of the latest trends. Key brands include Samsøe & Samsøe and Coster Copenhagen, whilst new collections launching this autumn include And Less for women and Hymn for men, which have been chosen for their elegance and affordability. Danish brand Rains continuously produce outerwear that is both stylish and practical enough to tackle the elements. Coming in a range of colours, they have been a great success in the Peckham store and have recently had a good response in the Harrogate store too. Sally is excited for the first anniversary of the Harrogate store on 21 September, and is planning a VIP evening where clients can sip prosecco and view the newest collection. Keep an eye on their website for more details. After the success of their spring/summer fashion show, which was attended by over 100
people and raised £500 for St Michaels Hospice, Sally is also looking forward to holding another fashion show next year. And whilst Bias’ northern and southern customers have a great sense of style in common, Sally has noticed that her Harrogate shoppers appreciate a more personalised service. “They tend to ask more questions and for advice on what garments to put together,” concludes Sally. “It’s been really positive and we’ve enjoyed having the opportunity to get to know our customers. We are looking to formalise this service in the future with bookable, one-on-one appointments.” Bias 17 Cold Bath Road, Harrogate, HG2 0NU Tel: 01423 705608 www.biasboutique.com

The good life LEADING LADY, AND KEEN FOODIE, SUE CRIMES SHARES HER BUSINESS STORIES AND REVEALS SOME OF THE SECRETS TO HER SUCCESS. ue Crimes, managing director of Italian-inspired restaurant brand Gusto, has spent more than 21 years working for Living Ventures Group, where she started out as junior manager of Vita Vita, Chester in 1997. As CEO, Sue ensures all aspects of the business are managed, focusing profoundly on developing a nationally recognised concept, and such is her reputation, she was branded one of the 100 most inspirational women across the region. Here, she tells Northside what life is like in and out of Gusto, what drives her to succeed, and what the future holds.
S
What is a typical working day like for you?
The beauty of my role, and the reason I love it so much, is because it’s so diverse. One day I might be on a building site ensuring a project is delivered on time and budget, and the next I’m based in our development kitchen trying new dishes, or in one of our bars tasting cocktails and wines for a seasonal menu change. The operational aspect is a huge part of the business – luckily, I have a fantastic team in place to help ensure standards never slip. We’re all passionate about delivering a fantastic product, a beautiful environment and keeping in line with our exceptional service standards, which have become synonymous with the Gusto brand. 82 Northside | www.northsidemagazine.co.uk
What has been the highlight of your career so far?
Starting my career on the floor meant I worked my way through the ranks, and achieving board status when I turned 30, in what was a much more male dominated industry and environment, was definitely my proudest moment. What do you enjoy most about your job?
Working with so many talented, like-minded individuals is the most enjoyable part by far. Having fun is definitely part of the criteria too, and getting to sample wonderful dishes. I love nothing better than our Gusto classic salt baked seabass, finished with a glass of chilled Whispering Angel. What advice would you give to anyone thinking of a similar career?
Don’t think of catering as second rate. A lot of people fall into the industry by chance, or as a stop gap – like me. I started off ‘plate carrying’, but after developing a passion for the industry, I realised there were endless possibilities. Catering can give you an exciting career, where no two days are the same. If you’re lucky enough to find a great company to work for, and are prepared to put the hours in, learn the trade and strive to be the best, the sky’s the limit.
Gusto, Little Stonegate, opened last month and is offering York Dining Club members an introductory offer throughout summer with 40% off food Sunday to Thursday all day. Additionally, members can also enjoy 20% off their bill at any time, except on Saturdays after 5pm. Join the York Dining Club at: www.gustorestaurants.uk.com/ dining-club What do you enjoy doing outside of work?
Although my job takes up a large part of my life, I manage to fit in other interests – namely being a mum to a boisterous seven-year-old boy, which doesn’t leave much time for other activities. I love yoga, eating in beautiful restaurants (other than Gusto), drinking rosé with friends and online shopping. Where do you see yourself in ten years?
I’d like to think Gusto will be firmly established as a nationally recognised brand, so I see myself being very much involved in the business. I’d like to think by then, I will have hung up my operational involvement, to focus on the creativity and development, and devote more time to family life. Who knows, we might have an international focus by then, so the thought of jet-setting across the globe to promote the brand would be fun. Do you have plans to expand further?
We currently plan to get Gusto to 25 sites, and then we will look for further investment to take the brand to at least 75. After that, international status through franchising. For us, Gusto is a classic brand that will stand the test of time, so we’ll still be here serving our loyal guests in years to come.

All aboard! NORTH STAR AND NOISETTE BAKEHOUSE BRING NEW ADDITION TO LEEDS DOCK. n 2013, North Star Coffee Roasters established themselves as Leeds’ first coffee roastery dedicated to providing high quality coffee by working with specialty focused producers world-wide. Four years on and North Star have teamed up with fellow Young British Foodie Awards winners and innovative micro-bakery, Noisette Bakehouse, to bring North Star Coffee Shop and General Store to Leeds Dock. The space, which opened in July, is also home to North Star’s on-site roastery and the renowned North Star Coffee Academy, which has been providing industry professionals and home baristas with training since 2016. The new coffee shop has an advanced offering of specialty grade, ethically sourced coffee which is freshly roasted on-site; filter brews and single origin coffees are uniquely paired with exclusive breakfast bakes, created by Noisette Bakehouse founder, Sarah

Lemanski. These baked goods range from four-cheese and rye scones to Noisette’s signature Morning CakeTM. Sarah Lemanski has also developed a seasonal lunch menu of small tartines, salads and grilled cheese sandwiches as well as a rotating weekend brunch menu which offers favourites such as house-made ricotta on freshly baked brioche, topped with raspberries, bee pollen and honey. The general store showcases food and drink producers from across the world such as artisan peanut butter from Yorkshire’s-own Proper Nutty and chocolate by Cocoa Runners, as well as various coffee brewing equipment. North Star co-founders Holly Bowman and Alex Kragiopoulos said: “We are really excited to open our first retail space at Leeds Dock right next door to the roastery and we can’t wait to share all that goes on at North Star with our customers.
“The coffee shop will be a real neighbourhood spot providing a space for the local residents and office workers to come together. “The general store element is a hugely important part of the offering and will be showcasing items from producers across the country whom we have worked with or admire.” North Star Coffee Shop is the perfect place to enjoy a coffee or a spot of brunch in a relaxed setting at a waterside location. Browse the general store for artisan produce to take home, watch coffee being freshly roasted next door and treat yourself to something sweet. EATING OUT
Seaside specials PHOEBE SEYMOUR SAMPLES AN EXPANSIVE MENU OF BRITISH ‘CLASSIC’ DISHES WITH A TWIST AND A HINT OF NOSTALGIA THROWN IN. henever people say they are proud to be British, I can’t help but cringe a little. It’s not that I’m ashamed to be, it’s just that I often feel like we don’t have a culture or a strong sense of identity. What is it to be British? And what are our national dishes anyway? George’s Great British Kitchen confidently answered both these questions – and dare I say it – restored my faith in our nation’s culinary reputation. There is certainly no place like this bar and restaurant, which humorously combines chandeliers with beach shack booths, childhood sweets with grownup spirits, and seaside snacks with Indianinspired cuisine. The brainchild of best friends Andrew and Nick, this restaurant is influenced by the British seaside holidays of their youth. It all started when Andrew’s father, George, moved from Cyprus to Britain in the 60s and opened his own chip shop here. After years of preparing ‘proper’ fish and chips, Andrew and Nick decided to share their love of food and the flavours adored by our nation by opening their first restaurant in Nottingham, followed by a branch in Newcastle, and most recently this one in Leeds. Each booth has a wooden beach shackstyle roof with the name of a popular seaside destination written above it. My mother and I were seated in the one labelled ‘Robin Hoods

Bay’ and were given a food menu modelled on a newspaper and a drinks menu that looked like an old-fashioned Tin-Tin comic book. The cocktail menu is split into a number of sections and we felt like kids in a sweet shop trying to choose one. Fittingly, I ordered a Lemon Sherbet (two for £8) with a side of candy floss from the George’s Sweet Shop Cocktails and mum chose a Chase Elegant (£7.85) from the Splendid Gin Bar section. Though the menu is primarily full of British favourites, George’s Cypriot roots were apparent in my starter – the halloumi skewers (£5.65). Served on a bed of cauliflower and mushroom curry, the two flavours shouldn’t have worked well together, but were the perfect match. Meanwhile mum had the cod pakora (£5.55) – another excellent Indian-British mashup, the cod was fried in a delicious light bhaji batter and came with a coriander and mint dip. For mains, I ordered the proper scampi (£12.95) and my mother had the cauliflower and mushroom jalfrezi pie (£11.50). My Scottish langoustine tail scampi was served in small and delicate pieces on a bed of pea puree, tomato salsa and spring onions with chip shop-style chips – posh yet down-toearth. Mum was relishing her pie, which had a light crust topped with spicy crumb, with a side of sweet potato fries and a jug of curry sauce.
My taste buds were truly transported to the seaside with my dessert. My donuts (£4.95) were warm, freshly-made sugary batons served with raspberry and chocolate sauces and a huge head of candy floss. Mum was still in sweet shop mode, and finished with the warm Cadbury fudge finger rolls (£5.95) – two supersized fingers coated in bread crumbs, covered in salted caramel and chocolate sauces, topped size vanilla ice cream. What struck me about George’s was how cross-generational the experience was. The sweets and seaside treats I enjoyed as a child were the same ones my mum enjoyed when she was young. George’s somehow manages to perfectly capture our heritage and proves there is such a thing as British culture. There is no equivalent word in English, but lagom roughly translates as ‘not too little, not too much, just right.’ By living lagom, you choose a more responsible and balanced life. So what does this mean for the home? Like the anti-clutter movement of minimalism, it is about having less, but the items you do own are sustainable, ethical and will ultimately bring you more joy. Reducing waste is a huge part of lagom, so reusable tote bags and furniture made from long-lasting materials such as acacia wood

EDUCATION
The best days of our lives? A-LEVEL STUDENT FU GE YANG, WHO SPENT PART OF HER SUMMER DOING WORK EXPERIENCE IN THE EDITORIAL DEPARTMENT AT RMC MEDIA, IS IN A REFLECTIVE MOOD AS SHE FACES UP TO A CHALLENGING FINAL YEAR AT SCHOOL. fter a year as a sixth former perhaps I should be taking the UCAS forms, personal statements and university open days in my stride. Nonetheless, the anxiety is unstoppable – I have one more year, one crucial year before my future is set before my eyes. We are only 17, yet it is up to us to map out a whole future, dig deep within ourselves and see if there is anything about us that we can use to our advantage. It felt as if I was boasting when I moulded a figure on a thin sheet of paper called a personal statement. Others may perceive it as a perfection, yet it was created by leaving out the bad bits. Sixth form, to say the least, had been a giant step up. We are not faced just with intense school works the teachers set every day, but the extra bits and bobs. Have you done more on your Extended Project Qualification (EPQ)? Have you researched into which university provides the best course for you? What are you doing to gain more UCAS points? Each individual task eats away slowly into my free time, taking up the few free periods I have left and eroding time which I could have spent with my friends. Some say “oh, it is not that bad if you are organised and prepared”. But it is easier said than done. If you let one thing
A
slip by, the entire timetable could go awry. Sometimes, especially when the teachers remind you of application form deadlines, you become aware of what is at stake; you hold all responsibilities for your future. This is indeed a challenging topic, especially if you lack ideas for the future, as I do. I have rather high expectations of myself and sometimes, I feel if I take one wrong step, my entire future will crash around me. This may sound like hyperbole, but I believe this feeling of anxiety is caused by the existence of stress which, without you realising, could be overpowering. It is the reason you have a tantrum when you know your parents’ advice is not an accusation; it is the reason you have the sudden need to weep when you know your daily work is not finished. Stress has
Fu Ge Yang doing work experience at RMC Media
slowly entered my life over the last year and become a normality. However, I am no exception. Stress is most apparent across our generation of sixth formers owing to the educational reforms we have to face. The removal of AS Level and coursework in some of the subjects means the last year of schooling will be more vital and challenging than ever before. Besides the learnings of Y13 and the preparations for our selected universities, we will have to learn and relearn, cramming in knowledge that had been collecting dust for over a year. Although I seem to be weaving a fabric of woes and foes over my life as a sixth former, there is some sunshine. If you look on the bright side, ever since I cast away the uniform I wore for five years and exchanged it for casual, freestyle clothes of my own choice, I definitely feel I have gained more freedom. It is also a nice feeling to sit in the library looking smug during a free period whilst the younger years are still in lessons. As I anticipate what Y13 may bring, a sense of excitement is taking over the fear and the doubts. I am opening a new chapter in my life and I have full control of it! Although there will be bumps and halts as I prepare for entering a university, I will fight on with enthusiasm. Northside | www.northsidemagazine.co.uk 101

Taking learning out of the classroom THE GREAT OUTDOORS CAN HAVE A POSITIVE IMPACT ON YOUR CHILD’S EDUCATION AND WELLBEING. here is an increasing amount of evidence to show that spending time outdoors has an extremely positive impact on a child’s physical and mental wellbeing and development. At Richmond House School, they are fortunate to have more than ten acres of sports pitches and fields. They not only use their outside space for sport and PE, but they often take their lessons outdoors, or use their unique outdoor classroom in the form of a yurt. The yurt offers the opportunity for children to be involved in a multi-sensory experience, where they are encouraged to touch, smell and listen to the surrounding world. From the autumn term, outdoor learning lessons are timetabled for all children from nursery, which will be an alternative method of delivering the curriculum and will improve skills such as teambuilding and communication. Parents and indeed children lead such busy lives today that children often do not get to spend as much time outdoors as they have done in the past. Children may still play sport outside, but many do not have the opportunity to roam and explore the natural environment. Reports suggest that those who do get to spend time outdoors are more independent and socially aware, and Richmond House School also find that teaching outdoors helps
T
to fuel the imagination and enhances creativity. They also recognise that children learn in a variety of ways, and taking learning outside often stimulates children in different ways, enabling them to feel inspired about their learning. At Richmond House, they timetable sessions on their all-weather adventure playground for everyone from nursery to Year 6. This provides a challenging and engaging environment in which the children can develop confidence and acquire new skills. Richmond House is an independent preparatory school in Far Headingley, north Leeds, for girls and boys aged three to 11 years. It offers a nurturing family environment where everyone knows each other and they have small class sizes along with specialist teaching from nursery in music, PE and languages. The school is renowned for its outstanding standards of education with the top grade of “excellent” across the board in their most recent full ISI inspection and consistently achieve outstanding 11+ examination results. With over ten acres of land, which includes a range of sports pitches and tennis courts, the school has a superb sporting reputation and its strong culture of music and drama is demonstrated in impressive performances and concerts throughout the year. Every child is encouraged to develop and explore their own interests and strengths,
academic or otherwise, and the children leave at age 11 as well-rounded and self-assured individuals. Come to their open day on Saturday 7 October, from 10am to 12pm, to find out more or call 0113 275 2670 to arrange an appointment at your convenience. Cundall Manor School
Gateways School
Cundall Manor is a thriving co-educational independent school, catering for boys and girls aged two to 16. It is ranked in the top nine per cent of independent schools in the UK. Set in 28 acres of Idyllic North Yorkshire countryside, the school’s happy and successful community of pupils enjoy a unique and varied curriculum. With go-kart races, axe-throwing and fantastic success on the sports fields, as well as in the classroom, pupils at Cundall Manor School leave as well-rounded and confident individuals. Benefitting from a recent extension of the upper school building, the school has a significant enrichment programme across the age ranges, as well as a homely 30-bed boarding facility.
As most parents with children nearing or of school age know, we are currently faced with a shortage of state school places in Leeds. The continuation of this trend can only lead to a widening of the gap between state and independent education. With the primary school “black hole” in North Leeds looking set to expand, perhaps it’s time to make Gateways your first choice school. If you are looking for a school which focuses on your child as an individual, which achieves excellent results and value added scores and where specialist teaching is introduced as early as age seven, then look no further. Grovian values HEADMASTER JAMES LOCKWOOD ON WHAT IT MEANS TO GROW UP IN THE WOODHOUSE GROVE TRADITION. ears before he became Headmaster, James was a pupil at Woodhouse Grove and walked the same corridors as the students he has care over now. He fidgeted in the same classrooms, scored under the same posts and batted on the same pitches. This history, this sense of growing up as a Grovian, gives James a depth of insight into the school above and beyond that of most head teachers. While the lessons may have changed somewhat, the Values that Grovians learn from being at this school have remained true over the years. These are the values that were instilled in James when he was a pupil and that he – and the friends he made at The Grove – have carried with them throughout their lives. Here, James describes his vision for the school – and what it means to be able to say: “I am Grovian”.
Y
I am Grovian
During their time at the School, Grovians will have, quite rightly, been set high academic expectations; the School expects everyone to work hard. However, an authentic Grovian is a true all-rounder who shows wide ambition; mental toughness in their spiritual life, their intellect and their all-round involvement in School life. The Grove has a long and proud history of encouraging its young people to 108 Northside | www.northsidemagazine.co.uk
look outwards, beyond the confines of the classroom. Such an outlook takes away arrogance and replaces it with true confidence; the confidence that enables Grovians to ‘walk with kings yet not lose the common touch’. Grovians are team players who possess the qualities of courage and integrity, and value the importance of service. Grovians look after each other, and go out of their way to show kindness to those in need. This attitude flows from the fact that Woodhouse Grove is more than a school; it is a learning community, in which ‘wholeness’ is the key. This ‘wholeness’ flows from living and working alongside others; learning how to give and take; when to follow and when to lead; how to deal with

people of very different temperament and character; of understanding the nuances of a shared life and of being a part of one learning community; this is what makes The Grove such a special place, and this is how it nurtures and develops Grovian values; which have stood the test of time. We are understandably very proud that the results of our latest Independent Schools Inspectorate Inspection officially rank Woodhouse Grove's unique approach to education as "Excellent", demonstrating that our school ethos and Grovian Values are clearly evident, not just to those closely associated with Woodhouse Grove - but to everyone that enters the school. I am delighted that the hard work of both staff and pupils has been acknowledged. It is my desire that all Grovians leave the School with great academic results, golden prospects and fond memories. More importantly, I hope that, as a result of their time at the School, all Grovians will make their way in the adult world with ideas and dreams, a vision of what you want to achieve in life, a strong set of values, a compassion for those in need, and above all, a love of life, and a passion for living it to the full.”

Start planning ahead FIVE TOP TIPS FOR AN END OF YEAR REVIEW OF YOUR AFFAIRS. BY MARK JONES OF LCF BARBER TITLEYS. o, we are into September and the nights are beginning to draw in. Thoughts will soon be turning to pumpkins and bonfires and Christmas is beginning to loom on the horizon. This period of calm between summer holidays and the festive build-up is the perfect time to review your affairs to ensure that 2018 gets off to the best possible start. Here are five points you might want to consider:
S
1. Do you have a Will and, if so, have you reviewed it recently? There have been some very significant changes to the tax laws lately which means that even Wills that were made relatively recently may no longer be appropriate.
2. Has 2017 been a year of change? It is not only the tax laws that can necessitate changes to a Will, our circumstances can change over time too. Have there been any major changes in your family circumstances or the value and nature of your assets since you made your Will? It is worth taking time out to sit down with your solicitor to review your Will regularly to make sure it is up to date. 116 Northside | www.northsidemagazine.co.uk
3. Once we get past Christmas, the end of the tax year at the beginning of April will fast be approaching. Have you made use of the tax reliefs and exemptions available to you in the present year? Speak to us to ensure that you are making the most of the opportunities to save tax for your family.
4. If you are a trustee or a beneficiary of any trusts have you reviewed them recently? Many trusts are subject to quite complicated tax treatment which can involve charges to inheritance tax every ten years. If you are approaching such an anniversary it can be crucial to take action before the anniversary is reached to minimise the tax payable.
5. Do you have a Lasting Power of Attorney? While Wills deal with your affairs after you have died, making a Lasting Power of Attorney will ensure that your affairs can be dealt with should you lose capacity while you are still living and can save much stress and expense for your family should the worst happen. There are two types of Lasting Power of Attorney. One deals with your finances and the other deals with more personal matters such as
medical treatment and we would recommend that both should be considered.
Take the opportunity this autumn to review your affairs with us to ensure a merry Christmas and a happy start to 2018. Adults go back to school to have the time of their lives Sun-drenched cocktails by an azure sea might sound like the ideal holiday, but more and more people are looking for active trips rather than beach breaks. Travel industry commentators have put active and adventure trips at number two of the top seven travel trends for 2017 and evidence suggests that healthy, fitness-based breaks are definitely on the up. It’s a development that independent co-ed Giggleswick School, in the Yorkshire Dales, is setting out to meet. The school has just launched its first ever holiday residentials for adults looking for outdoor pursuits or wellness breaks. Giggleswick School’s head of outdoor pursuits, Chris Wright, said: “The Yorkshire Dales is renowned for its climbing and hill walking. It is also a must-ride destination for mountain bikers. It’s actually quite rare to find a holiday which allows adults to try a number of outdoor pursuits with an expert instructor in one of the best locations for the activities. We hope those who come on our Active Outdoors retreat will go on to enjoy more adventures with the right skills, confidence and know-how.” The courses complement the school’s well established range of summer school residentials for children and young people, which include tennis, outdoor pursuits, golf, cookery, art, hockey and drama. For more information about summer courses for both adults and children, please visit the website www.giggleswick.org.uk or phone 01729 893000.

Archbishop of York opens the Chocolate Works Care Village In June of this year, Springfield Healthcare welcomed the Archbishop of York, Dr John Sentamu, to The Chocolate Works Care Village on Bishopthorpe Road, York to perform the official opening ceremony of the newly restored, iconic building which once housed the headquarters of Terry’s of York. The £10million restoration was the brainchild of Springfield Group CEO Graeme Lee whose vision of a care village for the citizens of York and the surrounding area has become an awe-inspiring reality. Setting new standards for elderly care in the heart of the community the vast central double height glazed atrium has been preserved and transformed into a unique ‘marketplace’ setting for the residents and visitors, complete with café, restaurant, spa, hairdresser, gym and even its own pub, The Duke of York. A large roof terrace allows residents to enjoy uninterrupted views across York towards the Minster, adjoining racecourse and across the rest of the chocolate works site.
