Fighting your corner MEET MATTHEW DOBKIN, A FAMILY LAW BARRISTER AT SUGARÉ & CO SOLICITORS.

atthew Dobkin is an experienced barrister who works in the Family Law department at Sugaré & Co Solicitors, a specialist Criminal, Motoring and Family Law firm.

M

What have been the highlights of your career?

I have provided legal advice to clients in various complex cases, but if I had to pick three, they would be: 1. Uncovering the substantial hidden assets of a party going though a divorce; 2. Locating and returning a child to this country, who had been abducted abroad by a parent; 3. Successfully challenging the local authority by ensuring that a child, who had significant education needs, got the help he deserved; The odds were against my clients in these cases and, by pursuing their interests strongly, we got the right outcome for them. What tempted you to work at Sugaré & Co as an in-house barrister?

Having been a barrister since 2007, I was delighted to be asked to join a firm with

an excellent reputation in the fields of law in which I specialise. My work has taken me internationally and throughout the country, most recently to London where I worked for the past seven years. I had worked closely with Sugaré & Co prior to that, and upon becoming aware that they were expanding and had a position available, it was an easy decision to make. I hope that my experience will be a great asset to the clients of Sugaré & Co, particularly in handling complex cases regarding children, divorce and special educational needs.

What are the most important qualities a lawyer should possess?

1. Never stop fighting, even if everyone is against you. 2. Tell clients the truth about their prospects, no matter how difficult that may be, so they can make informed choices. 3. Keep costs low – it’s not your money, it’s theirs. At Sugaré & Co we understand that people visit lawyers at the most challenging times of their lives. If you feel that you need legal advice please contact us to arrange a free consultation.

What are your top tips for those going through a divorce/separation?

1. Try to reach an amicable agreement with your spouse if possible. It’s quicker, less costly and less hassle that way. 2. Get any agreements drawn up in writing by a lawyer and approved by the court to avoid future problems. 3. Get legal advice at an early stage, even if you intend to reach an agreement. There are many pitfalls to avoid. Penny wise can lead to being pound foolish. 4. Choose a lawyer that will give you clear and honest advice and who will always advance your case.

The Diary THEATRE MUSIC COMEDY EVENTS EXHIBITIONS FILM FURTHER AFIELD…

An evening with... NEILL BARSTON SPEAKS TO SIR BRADLEY WIGGINS AHEAD OF HIS TOUR APPEARANCE IN HARROGATE.

aving become the most decorated Olympic athlete in British sports history, Sir Bradley Wiggins is out on tour, recounting tales from a highly-eventful career as one of cycling’s most high-profile figures. Being back amid the action covering one of cycling’s ultimate tests at this year’s Tour de France proved highly memorable for Sir Bradley Wiggins. The five-time Olympic gold medal winner was in his element across the channel, describing it as an outstanding highlight of his experience in the sport. However, as he concedes, he doesn’t miss the intensity of preparing for one of the world’s most celebrated yet grueling spectacles. So this time around felt poignant for the champion cyclist, witnessing his former teammate Geraint Thomas narrowly miss out on gaining what would have been a second victory in the stellar French race. “Covering the tour made me realise just how much I love it – when you are competing there’s a lot of emotion taken up with it all in dealing with the event to cross the line. It’s actually hard to get excited at the end of a race, so going back to it without all the pressure and watching it as a fan was great,” says the record-breaking athlete. After seven years from his own careerdefining victory in France, he says it was encouraging to gain such a warm reception from crowds. Despite this, he adds his commentating stint this summer couldn’t possibly tempt him out of retirement and prompt him to don his racing kit once again. “Going back to the tour and seeing some of those climbs brought back memories of just how hard it is. While people can make it look easy, it really isn’t, especially when you see guys getting taken out of the peloton, and some of crashes you witness. It can be brutal. But it was a brilliant event and doing those interviews was something special. “Cycling is all that I have ever known, right back to my school days when I was focusing on riding rather than all the lessons,” admits the man who stands as the UK’s most decorated Olympic athlete. He says that at 36 (he is now 39), it was not a difficult decision three years ago to walk away from the sport at a high point, enabling him to fully focus on the challenges of raising a young family with his wife at their home in Lancashire. While the celebrity status following his unprecedented back-to- back victory at the Tour de France and London Olympics in 2012 may not have sat entirely

H

comfortably with him, the wider effect of ‘Wiggo’s win’ was clearly tangible. It saw cycling in the UK enjoy a significant resurgence that is showing no sign of subsiding. The achievement led to his knighthood in 2013, which he built upon further at the Rio Olympics with a final gold as part of the winning British team pursuit squad. Wiggins is focusing on a number of projects including sports broadcasting and setting forth on his nationwide Bradley Wiggins: An Evening With tour this September. He’ll be reflecting on his lengthy career, and discussing some of his own heroes who feature in his latest book, Icons, who have proved an inspiration along the way. As he explains, another key area that is now close to his heart is that of supporting the next generation of potential stars within his sport. “Cycling is a great and necessary force in my life, and something I’ve been institutionalised in as well as being passionate about. If there’s a legacy from what I have done it’s with helping young people develop an interest in cycling and getting out there on bikes.” As for his own formative experiences, he acknowledges a challenging upbringing meant his was far from a case of being an overnight success. He was born in Ghent, Belgium, but his mother soon moved them to London after Bradley’s father, who was also a cyclist, parted from the family and had no involvement with his son’s upbringing. “In a weird way, my father is still my hero. I’ve kept two of his riding jerseys, though I detested the man, as he left us when I was just a baby. But my mum still glorified him, so if it hadn’t been for her, then I wouldn’t have had my career.” As a 12 year-old he took up cycling on the same south London circuit his dad had once ridden, setting him on a long path to an eventual sporting career. However, as he recounts, kids from Kilburn were not expected to achieve any great mark in society. So taking an active interest in cycling was far from a recipe for fitting in within a tough neighbourhood. He concedes he even resorted to wearing tracksuits over his riding gear for fear of homophobic abuse that might be dished out for his clothing. “I was asked by a teacher when I was 12 what I wanted to do with my life and I said I wanted to wear a winner’s jersey at the Tour de France, and she just laughed at me,” he adds with regret at the seeming lack of early support. As he explains, even after winning a

bronze medal at his first Olympics at Sydney, there were expectations upon him to go and gain a ‘proper job.’ Such thoughts were never going to be a reality for him though, and he earned his spurs in the early part of his career as a track specialist, before turning to road racing. “I never found that process of going to road racing hard at all, as I am someone who can be coached, so it came easily to me. If it was a question of having to lose weight for the tour then it’s just something I did with hard work and stopped eating and looked at my nutrition.” From a position of coming fourth in the Tour de France in 2009, observers began to take his credentials as a roadbased rider seriously. But it was not until joining Team Sky in 2010 (recently renamed Ineos under new sponsors), which was to herald his most consistent era of success. While he rates the elite set-up as ‘very businesslike and unsustainable’ in regard to managing his family life, he accepts those years led to his biggest victories that gave him a major international profile. “I know that it does mean a lot to other people that I won the tour and Olympics in 2012, but I wouldn’t be a very good person if those were the things that were the most important to me in my life,” reflects Wiggins. These subjects and plenty more besides will come under the microscope as Sir Bradley offers up some insights into his eventful career on his audience with UK tour. Expect plenty of memorabilia and anecdotes of racing rivalries that will offer a very personal window into his world. “I’ve been enjoying doing these shows as I like to break down perceptions. I feel you never really know someone until you’ve heard their story properly. “It gives me chance to meet people, and I can particularly remember speaking to one guy in Nottingham. He said his wife would really have loved the show, but she hadn’t made it as she had just died of cancer, so I just told him that she was right there with him. So with these kinds of shows, people see your emotions and I am looking forward to getting out there again,” adds Sir Bradley, reflecting on one of the most eventful careers in cycling history. Mykonos Town taverna and view of Little Venice

Romantic things to do in Mykonos Mykonos windmills An iconic sight of Mykonos is its windmills, and the most famous ones are found atop a hill on the edge of Mykonos Town. They were first built by the Venetians in the 16th century and were originally used to mill wheat. Take a walk up the hill to see the windmills in all their glory and to enjoy fabulous views over the town and the rest of the island. It’s the perfect spot to soak up a romantic sunset too. Cruise Get out on the water to see Mykonos and the surrounding islands from another perspective. There are numerous boat operators in Mykonos offering various day trips around the island or to the local islands of Delos and Rhenia too. Make an extra romantic occasion of it by embarking on a sunset and aperitivo cruise instead. An evening sunset cruise costs from €50 per person. Cycle and picnic For those who enjoy some gentle activity, there are a number of cycling tours on offer in Mykonos that showcase a different side of the island. Yummy Pedals offers a bike and picnic tour which allows you to discover some of the countryside in Mykonos before stopping for a sumptuous picnic. The bike and picnic tour by Yummy Pedals costs €85 per person.

Real weddings WHO BETTER TO TELL YOU ABOUT THE VIRTUES OF OUR REGION’S VENUES THAN THOSE WHO HAVE EXPERIENCED THEM FIRST-HAND? WE SPEAK TO TWO COUPLES AND TWO VENUES ABOUT THEIR WEDDING EXPERIENCES. BY RACHEL MARTIN.

Harriet Lefton recalls her perfect wedding weekend experience on the Harewood Estate. eremy and I met in Liverpool and have been together a little over 11 years. I was friends with his sister, who he visited from time to time and one day, we got to talking. We have spent pretty much every day together since and now have two children, Mila, five and Lana, two, so getting married seemed like a natural progression. Jeremy popped the ‘big question’ in the car on the way to the airport – not the most romantic proposal. We were due to fly to Barbados and I was stressed because we had set off late, so to curb my angst, Jeremy throughout proposing there and then would “cheer me up”. I quickly said “YES – but come on, we need to get to the airport!” Though we now live in Windermere in the Lake District, the Harewood Estate played a huge part in my childhood. I attended nearby school, Gateways, in my early years and spent many weekends at Harewood House, where my dad and I visited a variety of classic car conventions. Whilst we didn’t experience getting married at Harewood House [though we have since attended a wedding there and it was incredible] a wedding weekend break surrounded by the idyllic Harewood Estate was so special and nostalgic, and just perfect. We booked a stay at Oak House, which is simply stunning. Everything had been thought of and it was the little finishing touches, like a special space to

hang my dress that made our stay so special and gave the cottage its own unique charm – they had thought of everything and more. The location is picture perfect. We hired a number of the cottages available on the Harewood Estate and it was so nice to have our friends and family all close together. There’s plenty of outdoor space, too, so we had a lovely barbecue. It was a dream stay and one we cannot wait to repeat – we’re actually hoping to book a return stay for our first anniversary. I was treated to a gorgeous meal the night before with my bridesmaids and

mum, cooked by award-winning MasterChef finalist, Josh Whitehead, which was organised by the wonderful Felicity at Harewood Holidays through the Harewood food and drink project [set up by Eddy Lascelles to showcase the fabulous food and drink produced on the estate: www.harewoodfoodanddrink.com]. The menu consisted of goat’s cheese ganache, beetroot, mulberry and fennel; corn-fed chicken, sweetcorn, leeks and morel mushrooms; followed by apple

tarte tatin, elderflower, honey and clotted cream, and it was all round amazing – there was not a single crumb left on anyone’s plate. Josh talked us through each course, and we got to watch him cook, which was really interesting. My sister can’t eat dairy and he really went out of his way to make sure she didn’t feel like the odd one out. It was perfect and an experience I would highly recommend because it made the stay feel so special. The next day we got married at Wharfedale Grange, which is only a mile or so from the Harewood Estate. We had a very romantic ceremony with lots of twinkling lights and gorgeous flowers by Leafy Couture and acoustic music by Harmonic, booked through Jonny Ross Music. She was amazing, her voice suited the venue so well and helped to create the most gorgeous atmosphere. We also had our reception at Wharfedale Grange. Claire and Zach were so helpful and nothing was too much trouble. We had 120 guests, but they helped our day feel intimate and 36 Northside | www.northsidemagazine.co.uk

not too grand. Our wonderful cake was from Poppy Pickering in Ilkley and we had so many compliments on the taste and look – it’s hard to get both right, trust me, but Dominique nailed it. My dress was by Rembo Styling from The Bridal Collection in Harrogate, where the team were so helpful in finding me ‘the one’ and I could not be happier with my choice. As for the music: I had always wanted a wandering band to play for Jeremy and I on our big day and I eventually found The Diamond Boys, who came from pretty much as far south as you can get, but they were definitely worth it. I will remember them forever. Our wedding day catering was very informal, we used Fizz and Fire who are part of the Taste Cuisine group. We opted for sharing food – barbecue-style, so lots of meats were put in the middle of the tables with various sides and people just helped themselves. It made the wedding breakfast nice and relaxed and was exactly what we wanted – and the food was superb.

We wanted our wedding to be as laid back as possible and Felicity was so easy to get on with and extremely helpful. She had thought of everything possible before our stay, from organising our meal the night before to a welcome basket packed full of local bread, preserves, biscuits and even beer! We were quite a large group in the end, and all checked in at different times, but the team were so accommodating and just made our stay so very special. Oak House was the perfect fit for Jeremy and I and we are truly thankful for Felicity and everyone who helped make our wedding day the best day of our lives. If you’re looking for something slightly out of the ordinary on your big day, Harewood Holidays may just provide the answer, and if you do book a stay – which we definitely recommend you do! – be sure to book the surrounding cottages for your family and friends and hold a post-wedding barbecue the day after. You’ll thank me later.

Majestic Hotel Harrogate’s wedding planner, Philly Smith

From New York to Yorkshire

NEW YORK FASHION HOUSE EVENTS PLANNER TAKES ON KEY ROLE AT THE DOUBLETREE BY HILTON HARROGATE MAJESTIC HOTEL AND SPA. n experienced events planner has swapped the glitz and glamour of New York for the elegance and beauty of Harrogate, by taking on a key role in the town’s DoubleTree by Hilton Majestic Hotel Harrogate Hotel & Spa. Philly Smith, who has spent three years working predominantly for fashion houses in the “city that never sleeps”, has become wedding planner at the landmark venue, which has recently completed a stunning £15million transformation. The hotel was purchased in November 2016 by the privately-owned family run Cairn Group, who have signed a franchise agreement with Hilton to relaunch it as Harrogate’s first DoubleTree, following the significant investment. The 18-month programme of work has seen the full refurbishment of its reception, public areas, 14 meeting, event and function suites, and 184 guest bedrooms. The new look DoubleTree by Majestic Hotel Harrogate is now home to “Fredericks Bar and Piano Lounge”, a beautifully transformed new venue serving everything from specialty coffees through to amazing cocktails. Additionally, “Carters Champagne Bar and Grill” is a destination restaurant in the old ballroom, which is set to attract a

host of new clientele to the venue. And, in the few short months that Philly has been at The Majestic, she has already organised a series of highly successful weekend wedding showcases, launched new wedding packages and has put together a programme of other events to give potential future brides and grooms the opportunity to view the hotel’s exceptional facilities and landscaped grounds. Philly said: “The Majestic Hotel has always been a byword for style and elegance and a very popular venue for wedding receptions, bolstered by the extensive gardens that make a superb backdrop for the wedding photos. “Whilst living in New York, I planned and executed many weddings and events, and came to enjoy every stage of the bridal process, from the early planning right through to the big day itself. And this is something I’m continuing here, at the Majestic Hotel. “We are licenced for civil ceremonies, and the diversity of different weddings we hold makes the job incredibly interesting and adds to its excitement. It’s a privilege working with couples to ensure that we don’t only meet their expectations – but exceed them!” Philly added: “Now our £15million transformation has been completed, we are an even bigger draw for brides and

grooms looking for the perfect venue to hold their big day. “Our new executive chef has created a set of mouth-watering menus designed for those looking to hold intimate family gatherings right through to largescale celebrations.” Running alongside the refurbishment of the hotel is the redevelopment of its former leisure club into The Harrogate Spa. Opening in November, this state-ofthe-art facility will boast a 12.5m indoor pool and six treatment rooms, two of which are double. It will offer a range of therapeutic thermal experiences, including a spa pool, Himalayan salt sauna, steam room, Rasul, experience shower and ice fountain. In addition, there will be a tranquil relaxation lounge leading out to a Zen and Courtyard spa garden, spa café and terrace, fully equipped gym and studio. “The Harrogate Spa will give us an added dimension and set us apart from many wedding venues in the region,” said Philly. Further information about the DoubleTree Majestic Hotel Harrogate Hotel & Spa’s wedding packages are available by phoning Philly on 01423 700300 (option 2) or by visiting its website: www.thecairncollection.co.uk/hotels/ harrogate/the-majestic Northside | www.northsidemagazine.co.uk 41

Charlotte and John enjoyed a perfect day at Denton Hall. Rachel Martin speaks to wedding and events manager Brooke Adams to find out what makes the location so special.

ith the venue playing a vital role in the success of your day, it’s the big decision you really need to get right. And there really is so much choice. The venue you pick will without doubt affect the theme of the entire day and will determine the number of guests you can invite, your decor, your vendors, your wedding date and have a big impact on your wedding budget – so it’s important to get it right! Here, Northside speaks to Brooke Adams, wedding and events manager at Denton Hall to find out more about the Grade I listed manor house and why the personal touch is absolutely essential.

W

Tell us a little about Denton Hall.

Denton Hall is nestled on the outskirts of Ilkley and surrounded by 2,500 acres of private parkland. We offer full 44 Northside | www.northsidemagazine.co.uk

exclusive use from Friday to Sunday for each wedding, and, unlike other venues, we are not a hotel and do not offer accommodation other than for wedding parties, making us a bit of a hidden gem. There is a quaint village church a stone’s throw away for couples seeking a more traditional wedding and we also have four gorgeous spaces inside for civil ceremonies. As well as all this, we have a 1am bar and music licence, onsite

accommodation for up to 44 guests, an amazing spiral staircase, separate dining room and dance floor and a luxurious honeymoon suite. What do you offer the bride and groom from the moment they visit Denton Hall, right the way through to the planning, ceremony and aftercare?

We offer a personalised service and love getting to know our couples through

regular meetings, emails and telephone calls. We are there through their whole journey – from the first viewing to being there on the day to make sure everything runs smoothly – and to serve a good old fashioned full English breakfast on Sunday morning. What makes Denton Hall such a unique place to get married?

It’s not a place that everyone gets to come to, as we are a private property. The sweeping views across the Wharfe Valley and Ilkley moor make the perfect picturesque backdrop for photographs and we are also south facing, which means we can make the most of the sunshine. Having the whole house to yourselves for the weekend means you can add your own personal touches, through colour schemes and flowers, or for those who prefer a fuss free affair, the stunning ceilings, fireplaces and chandeliers mean that you don’t need to bring anything with you. The weekend hire begins on a Friday and lots of our couples choose to make the most of this by inviting friends and family to enjoy a few pre-wedding drinks at the bar. We can also cater with BBQ’s, hog roasts, a pizza van and so many other options. What options are available to those choosing to get married at Denton Hall and how do you help couples customise their wedding?

All our packages are completely flexible, so the bride and groom can tailor their wedding exactly how they dreamed it would be. Each and every wedding is as unique as the couple and we work hard to reflect that manta in all that what we offer. We can provide you with ideas and advice on how to decorate the Hall and always share pictures of our happy couples on social media, to help inspire your big day. Can wedding guests stay at Denton Hall?

We offer 24 bedrooms and two suites and wedding guests can book a stay for one or two nights. How do you ensure the very best food for your couples and their guests?

By drawing upon the skills of our awardwinning catering team, Box Tree Events, we are uniquely placed to offer you and your wedding guests a fine dining experience like no other. Every wedding is special, and each bride and groom

adds their own individuality and vision. We are committed to realising this vision and turning it into their dream day. With over 25 years’ experience and three Michelin starred restaurants under his belt, executive chef Simon Gueller and the team have forged a reputation for providing both quality food and exceptional service. We offer a number of bespoke packages where you can custom build each aspect of your special day, with the help of our experienced wedding planner, who will be on hand to assist from the moment of enquiry, right to the point your very last guests depart. Choose your canapés and wedding breakfast with the Box Tree Events team and seek assistance from our sommelier, who will help you to pick the wines that perfectly complement your menu.

Do you have any expert wedding tips?

It’s your day, so do it your way. Don’t get bogged down with thinking about how to please the masses or if a relative will roll their eyes at your bridesmaid’s dresses. Your wedding day is all about you and this should be reflected in your décor, food, drink and music choices. Always try and take a moment to take everything in – the day goes by so quickly. Setting a budget (and trying to stick to it) will also help with decision making – and help to keep you sane!

Testimonial “We don’t really know where to start, from the moment we arrived on the Friday we were looked after right up until we left on Sunday. :We had the most amazing wedding weekend and it wouldn’t have been possible without Denton Hall. We’d like to thank them for everything they did in both the run up and also delivering the perfect wedding for us. “We received such lovely comments from our family and friends on how well the day ran, how nice the food was and how beautiful Denton Hall is – we are just gutted we can’t come back and do it all over again. “Everyone was so efficient and couldn’t have done anymore for our guests, thank you to all the team at Denton Hall for making everything look so pretty and perfect.” – Charlotte and John

DR DAN BLACKMAN MBCHB MD MRCPIS A CONSULTANT CARDIOLOGIST AT LEEDS NHS TRUST AND AT SPIRE LEEDS HOSPITAL. Question: I have been experiencing dizzy spells frequently these last few months. They occur mostly when I get up from sitting and pass again within a minute. On occasion they leave me feeling disorientated for up to half an hour. I have low blood pressure, but I have never suffered with dizziness before. Could this be linked with exercise? I have been training for a marathon for the past three months and it has been suggested that I need to take iron supplements. But I have also noticed the dizziness can coincide with stiffness in my neck – I still suffer from soft tissue damage from a car accident which left me with whiplash two years ago. Amswer:

Dizziness can mean light-headedness, true vertigo (‘the room spinning’), or difficulty with balance. Dizziness on getting up from sitting is likely to be light-headedness caused by a drop in blood pressure. This is a common condition, especially in older people or in people taking medications for a heart condition or Parkinson’s disease. If your blood pressure is normally low, this may make you more prone to this problem. You should make sure you keep well hydrated, especially during and after exercise, and take a drink when the dizziness comes on. If your symptoms persist you may need to consult your doctor. Regular cardiovascular exercise, such as training for a marathon, does cause blood pressure to drop a little, but is unlikely to be a significant factor. Intense endurance exercise can also lead to a drop in iron levels, but this would not cause dizziness unless you actually became anaemic, which is very rare. Iron supplements are not recommended unless anaemia is present – a simple blood test from your doctor could exclude this. Whiplash injuries can lead to later symptoms of dizziness, probably caused by compression of nerves in the neck which control blood pressure. This is a separate problem from your dizziness on standing up. It can be helped with assessment and treatment by an experienced physiotherapist.

This wondrous cream is rich in Guaraná, a native Amazonian plant whose fruit contains one of the most potent forms of caffeine on the planet. Guaraná caffeine helps stimulate circulation and together with SOL’s Brazilian beauty blend of Cupuaçu Butter, Açaí and Coconut Oil, helps smooth and tighten skin for the most positively pinchable posterior. Results that speak for themselves RACHEL MARTIN LOOKS AT THE LATEST BEAUTY BUZZWORD – COOLSCULPTING®.

H

ave you tried everything to shift stubborn fat and yet still haven’t achieved your desired

results? Body contouring has grown from being a beauty buzzword to big business, with CoolSculpting® considered the safest non-surgical treatment available – promising to restore body confidence with up to a 30 per cent reduction in fat cells. Using controlled cooling (i.e. freezing) it targets pockets of stubborn fat – ones often resistant to dieting and exercising – and promises permanent results. As with many aesthetic procedures, it comes with a lot of questions: Is it safe? Is it successful? Does it hurt? To answer the above, and more, we spoke to Claire Hill, Patient Services and Development Manager of Aesthetic Health Leeds who explains the ins and outs of the Cryolipolysis system.

CoolSculpting® procedure?

Good candidates for the CoolSculpting® procedure are those that eat a healthy diet and exercise yet have noticeable bulges in certain areas they’d like to get rid of. What does it feel like?

CoolSculpting® is generally a comfortable treatment. As the cooling begins you typically feel intense cold which should soon dissipate. With some applicators, you’ll feel slight pulling as suction is applied. Usually there’s no downtime, but with any medical treatment, there is a recovery period, so you may feel a bit tender for a short while afterwards. How long is each treatment?

The length of your CoolSculpting® treatment will vary depending on the number of areas being treated during one visit. Typically, the treatment takes 35-45 minutes per applicator.

However, these side effects are temporary and generally pass within a day or at most two weeks and do not stop you going about your daily activities. CoolSculpting® is the only FDA-cleared

Cryolipolysis fat reduction treatment available in the UK. When will I see results?

Back in the saddle CYCLIST TOM ROWLAY IS ONE OF MANY TO BENEFIT FROM MR CHARLIE TALBOT’S SURGICAL EXPERTISE AT BMI THE DUCHY HOSPITAL, HARROGATE.

ike many people who saw the Tour de France’s ‘Grand Depart’ pass through Yorkshire in 2014, 34-year-old Tom Rowlay was bitten by the cycling bug. Since then his passion has continued to grow and as an amateur cyclist he started riding competitively two years ago. In March of this year, Tom travelled, like many cyclists do, to Majorca to take advantage of its stunning cycling terrain. Unfortunately, on one of his rides, Tom was thrown from his bike whilst travelling

L

at 25mph and landed on his head and shoulder – he suffered a large area of ‘road rash’ and a damaged collar bone. He underwent emergency surgery on the Balearic island and felt fine up until he was half way through his recovery (six weeks). At this point Tom started to experience discomfort and was very much aware that something ‘felt alien’ in his collar bone and didn’t feel right. On his return to England, he came to see Mr Talbot at BMI The Duchy Hospital, Harrogate. Tom booked this initial consultation to clarify that the treatment he received in Majorca was healing correctly. Unfortunately, the procedure had not healed correctly and he was left with two options – let the hospital monitor his recovery and healing whilst using gentle rehab or undergo revision surgery. Mr Talbot decided that surgery was necessary after a CT scan showed

the shoulder was not healing. “I booked an appointment with Mr Talbot due to recommedations from a few people I know and also did a bit of research online,” explains Tom. “I knew he was the consultant I wanted to see. From the first time I met him, his expertise and attention to detail was obvious, which filled me with confidence to proceed with surgery under his care. “The care I received at the hospital was excellent; all the staff were very pleasant and helpful.” Mr Talbot explains the procedure: “Tom underwent a revision plating of his collar bone fracture as it was inadequately treated with a plate and screws in Majorca. “Not only that, he had a large area of ‘road rash’, which we tend to allow to heal over before embarking on surgery as there is an increased risk of infection and wound healing in the presence of

SPECIALIST SHOULDER AND ELBOW SURGEON, MR CHARLIE TALBOT, TALKS ABOUT THE COMPLEXITIES OF SURGERY. harlie Talbot is a specialist shoulder and elbow surgeon in Harrogate. He was appointed in 2013 and has developed a busy NHS and private practice focusing on patient centred care and evidence based treatments. Charlie has an interest in complex keyhole reconstruction of the shoulder as well as shoulder and elbow injuries that are often related to sports. Charlie is a founding member of the Yorkshire Shoulder Clinic as well as the North and West Yorkshire Shoulder and Elbow Society. He also works very closely with a number of physiotherapists within the Harrogate and North Leeds region to ensure that patients are getting the best results from their surgery. Charlie sees a number of cycling related injuries to the shoulder and has seen an increase in these following an overall rise in the sport that has been fuelled by the Tour de Yorkshire events as well as the 2014 Tour de France that started in Yorkshire with the Grand Depart. In the wake of the 2019 UCI World Championships to be held in Harrogate in September, Charlie Talbot discusses collar bone fractures.

bone heals naturally. Clearly some patients benefit from operative fixation particularly when there is significant displacement or shortening of the collar bone and also in higher energy injuries. Additionally those individuals who are keen to return to sporting activity more quickly may wish to discuss the benefit of surgery. There are times when surgery is necessary, such as if the bone ends come through the skin or if there is a blood vessel or nerve injury. Thankfully, these types of collar bone fractures are uncommon.

What are the most common cycling injuries? Cycling is a great way to keep healthy and clearly prevention is better than cure. There are many important preventative measures required for cycling such as good set-up and positioning on the bike, road safety and, of course, staying upright! I have seen everything from major pile ups to zero miles an hour injuries when cyclists are unable to unclip at traffic lights. The most common upper limb injuries I see are broken collar bones (clavicle fracture), rotator cuff tears and acromioclavicular joint disruption.

Would you recommend surgery to be performed abroad? We know there are incredibly well trained surgeons throughout Europe and the rest of the world but, in general terms, unless you have a good knowledge of a surgeon’s practice and results then the recommendation would be to return to the UK and seek advice to discuss whether or not surgical fixation should be performed, with the knowledge that there is no significant rush to perform surgery.

traumatic skin abrasions. Fortunately he avoided any such infection. The surgery took place in July and the recovery has been smooth. Tom has already started with physio and after missing most of the cycling season, is hoping to be fit enough to take part in some of the social rides happening during the UCI Road World Championships which take place in Harrogate this month. BMI The Duchy Hospital offers a range of services including surgical specialties, diagnostic services including MRI, X-Ray and Ultrasound and health and wellbeing to patients in North Yorkshire, Leeds and York.

Which collar bone fractures need to be fixed? The vast majority of collar bone fractures are treated without surgery in a sling with a careful wait and watch policy as the

When should surgery be considered after a collar bone fracture? If a collar bone fracture requires surgery this can be performed safely and without compromising results within the first couple of weeks or so from injury, unless the collar bone has come through the skin or patients are undergoing surgery for multiple procedures. Therefore, surgery can be planned with the most appropriate surgeon. This is important for those keen cyclists who travel abroad for their passion, as injuries sustained abroad do not necessarily require urgent treatment.

Results driven experience A NEW HEALTH AND BEAUTY MEDISPA HAS ARRIVED IN HARROGATE. pening its doors in February, spa810 (pronounced ‘spa eight ten’) has six treatment rooms in a prominent position in the Montpellier Quarter of the town. Bringing a relaxing spa experience combined with advanced technology, spa810 delivers results-driven treatments for both men and women. Offering a selection of carefully curated spa and non-invasive medical treatments, spa810 offers fat-freezing, advanced facials, laser-hair removal and a variety of massages, all given by their highly trained team of therapists. All guests having facial treatments are invited to receive a complimentary skin consultation prior to any treatment. Using a state-of-the-art device which looks at the lower layers of skin, the therapists are then able to advise on the best treatment suitable for each individual’s needs. Launching with the world-leading CoolSculpting system, spa810 offers guests the advanced fat-freezing treatment that sculpts the body to rid you of stubborn fatty areas that diet and exercise doesn’t seem to shift. This

O

incredible non-invasive treatment freezes fat cells which, over 8-12 weeks, your body naturally processes and then eliminates. Requiring no down time, guests are left with a more sculpted body in a matter of weeks. Areas that can be treated with CoolSculpting include flanks (love handles), double chin, abdomen, inner thigh, upper arms and bra fat. spa810 is also offering the highly regarded HydraFacial which uses advanced, patented vortex technology to deeply cleanse the skin and deliver botanical ingredients to protect and rebuild nutrient levels. Taking facials to a totally new level, a Hydrafacial can be tailored to treat any specific skin concern and, with its revolutionary cleanse, exfoliate and hydrating system, all skin types will be left healthier and glowing. Additional skin treatments available include micro-needling using SkinPen, the only FDA-approved needling device. Micro-needling stimulates the production of collagen for plumper, firmer skin and also reduces the appearance of scars and wrinkles. Rejuvenating facials from iS Clinical can be tailored to an individual’s skin concern and NuFace micro-current facials will give visible instant lift – ideal before a big event. The advanced Venus laser hair removal system at spa810 provides virtually permanent laser hair removal. Popular for men and women, the Venus technology is faster and more comfortable due to its advanced cooling system. It is considered the “gold standard” of hair removal lasers as it can

be used on all skin types effectively with the fewest number of treatments. Duncan Berry, spa810 Director, comments: “We are delighted to have opened our first UK spa in Harrogate as we believe that there is tremendous demand for results-driven treatments that help boost self-confidence and deliver exactly what a guest wants. “Just as we all know that regular hair appointments are required to keep our hair looking in great condition, people are realising that regular facials are necessary for clear, healthy and youthful looking skin too. Our highly trained and experienced team offer a range of treatments that are safe and highly effective in a relaxed and comfortable environment. “We also now provide finance options for people wanting to spread the costs of their treatments which can help them manage the cost on a monthly basis, whether it is CoolSculpting, laser hair removal or a course of facials.” spa810 2 Royal Parade, Harrogate, HG1 2SZ Tel: 01423 590810

Clear vision NARU OPTICIANS OPENED IN NORTH LEEDS JUST OVER A YEAR AGO. PRINCIPAL OPTOMETRIST, JUGESH NARU, TALKS ABOUT HIS PASSION FOR OPTICS. ptics is in my blood, I have had a passion for it since I was little as both my parents were optometrists, both with their own practices. I remember helping them out when I was still at school on reception and also in the glazing lab where my father taught me all about lenses and how to glaze a pair of spectacles. Now having been qualified for 16 years and having worked in different settings, from our own family-run practice to the high street multiple chains and also the exclusive Harrod’s Opticians in London, I decided now was the time to start up my own optical practice from scratch. I also wanted to get a good work/home life balance with having two small children and wanting to spend as much time as possible with them too. We’ve created a relaxed modern non-pressurised environment, with a children’s area too, where you can come and have your eyes examined and choose your eyewear from our extensive range of frames, including the latest in designer eyewear from Moscot,

Prodesign, Vinyl Factory, Zen and P+US eyewear to name but a few. We will help you to find frames to match your personality and lenses to match your needs. We have had a fantastic response from the local community since opening our doors, many whom have commented that its great to have a local, friendly optician with easy parking, as they have been having to go in town to get their eyes checked, which can be quite stressful. We take your eyecare very seriously – after all it’s your vision. Being a new practice and wanting to get it ‘right’ we

invested a lot in the consulting room equipment and allocate 40 minutes for an eye examination. We take our time and explain everything clearly to keep it simple for you. To keep things exciting and moving forward, we are always looking for new opportunities, for example, we are the exclusive authorised dealership for Moscot frames in Leeds. The famous Leica brand has just recently entered the UK optical lens market and we are the authorised dealership for Leica Lens eyewear in Leeds, so now you can combine great frames along with fantastic lenses. There will also be some new exciting French frame brands coming soon. We look forward to building up the practice in to something special and welcome new patients – come and have a look.

WHAT’S GOING ON LEEDS? IT’S BEEN A WHIRLWIND SUMMER FOR MAVEER SINGH-PANGU.

Manahatta launches in Harrogate

ith just a few weeks of summer 2019 left, you can bet your last dollar I’ll be squeezing every last ounce of sunshine out of this season as humanely possible! It’s been a whirlwind of a year, and August was no exception. My birthday celebrations were a little more low-key than usual, but no less fabulous – sometimes less really is more. I still partied pretty hard with my closest family and friends and felt

amazing throughout thanks to my cheeky last-minute booking with Melissa from Invigorate IV. Their vitamin and detox treatments always leave me feeling reborn and really took the edge off turning a year older. I was also one of the 160,000 people that saw Ed Sheeran strut his stuff at Roundhay Park, and what a gig that was. Thankfully, I chose to attend on the Saturday, thus avoiding the downpour and the subsequent mud bath. It really

was a special night and one that will go down in Leeds history for decades to come. 2019 really has been the year of the wedding for me, and last month I was blessed to witness my two dear friends Sarah and Karan Bhullar exchange vows at the stunning Thornton Manor in Cheshire. In typical Indian fashion, the celebrations didn’t stop after just one day, and continued into the following weekend where we partied the night

The Bhullar wedding celebrations

away at Wharfedale Grange. If the Bhullars know how to do just one thing, it’s throw a party to end them all! Back in the real world, my clients have been so fun recently that it’s never really felt like work. We recently hosted not one, but two show-stopping events for the iconic Harvey Nichols. Their Fourth Floor Bar has just undergone a luxe makeover, which coincided with the launch of their gourmet small plates menu. The food speaks for itself, and the dishes are the perfect post-shopping pick me up when accompanied with a glass of Champagne. The cured salmon with avocado mousse and horseradish is simply divine, and the pecan chocolate brownie is well worth pressing pause on your diet. Needless to say, both parties were a cut above the rest, with guests leaving with fond memories and waking with sore heads! Speaking of launch parties, if you like a good night on the tiles in Harrogate then you must check out the brand-new Manahatta. They’re bringing their unique brand of New York glamour to the historic town, and we guarantee a party that’s worthy of the city that never sleeps. The peacock blue interiors and edgy detailing is absolutely gorgeous, and their food and cocktail offering is unlike anything else in Harrogate. You simply must go. Back in Leeds, make space for your diary on 11 September, as I’ll be hosting our third Pink Ladies & Friends event at The Ivy. Our guest speaker is none other than local legend and DJ extraordinaire

Small plates at Harvey Nichols

Stephanie Hirst, who will be sharing inspiration with 50 ladies over an indulgent dinner in typical Ivy style. Also The Head of Steam is preparing to unleash its third Leeds venue at the end of September, when they transform the space previously occupied by Lloyds Bank on Park Row into their 16th UK site. The modern pub promises to deliver its usual mixture of high-quality local and international craft ales, irresistible food and retro gaming. The eye-watering £1million investment will see the former bank changed beyond recognition, to become one of the city centre’s most desirable hangouts. The gaming zone will boast an island bar, shuffleboards and a handpicked selection of retro arcade classics, including the eternally popular Streetfighter. Can’t wait for this launch to get my gaming on. That’s all for now I look forward to checking in again in October, until then follow my escapades on insta @maveer123 @pg_hl Mav x Northside | www.northsidemagazine.co.uk 77

In good weather, the terrace at the Pheasant is the ideal setting for the ceremony or drinks reception

Stylishly unique THE PHEASANT HOTEL IN HAROME IS A STUNNING SETTING FOR YOUR WEDDING OR SPECIAL CELEBRATION. idden away in the quaint North Yorkshire village of Harome, overlooking the duck pond, sits the Pheasant Hotel, a former blacksmiths shop that still holds much of its original rustic charm. In recent years the hotel has fast become a foodie paradise with its awardwinning restaurant building up a stellar reputation largely by word of mouth but particularly since scooping the top spot for the much coveted ‘Best Restaurant 2017’ at the Welcome to Yorkshire White Rose Awards. This year they are once again finalists in these prestigious awards – this time in the ‘Taste of England’ category – the results will be announced in November. Peter Neville – who draws upon his experience gained when working for Claude Bosi at Hibiscus in London and, nearer to home, with Andrew Pern at The Star Inn – owns and runs the Pheasant with his business partner Jacquie Pern. Peter cooks what he likes to eat himself and his menus have evolved over the years to reflect his interests in foraged ingredients and local produce, which culminates in dishes with fresh, clean, deceptively simple flavours and presentation. The front of house team and the smooth running of the hotel is expertly led by Jacquie, whose exquisite taste and keen eye for stylish interior detail can be seen throughout. Her aim is to offer the perfect room for everyone, from

EATING OUT

La dolce vita CHRIS WILSON DISCOVERS AN EXPANSE OF FLAVOURSOME DELIGHTS AT AMICI TOGETHER WITH HIS OWN AMICO… ith a name like Amici it’s hardly surprising that you get the warmest of friendly welcomes at this bustling, busy Italian restaurant in Alwoodley. And even when you’ve eaten here before you can’t help being equally impressed by the striking décor of marble tables, wooden floors, smoked glass, strings of lights at the windows and a large open kitchen where smartly dressed chefs in black aprons do their thing. There is also a series of striking blackand-white photographs taking up entire walls, full of delightful snapshots from what looks like a classic 1960 movie with sharply dressed men riding scooters, sometimes with adoring young ladies riding pillion. La Dolce Vita? You’d better believe it. At first glance the menu seems pretty straightforward with a lovingly curated selection of the old country’s greatest hits, from pasta to pizza with plenty of seafood and meat dishes also. But I definitely found myself breaking new ground with a starter from the small but significant I crudi (raw) selection. It took a little bit of bravery on my part to order the gambero rosso (£10.50), aka Sicilian red king prawns with pistachio, mint, ravioli, scampi and bread. In fact the heart of this dish, a disc of raw minced prawns with a couple of cooked ones on top, might have seemed more in place in a Japanese diner. The uncooked element definitively needed to

W

be sparkling fresh to be a success. It was a triumph, intensely savoury with a pleasingly delicate texture. After the initial hesitant first mouthful I had to restrain myself form bolting it down too quickly. The presentation was stylish too, a feature of every dish we saw leaving the kitchen. There’s a lovely relaxed vibe about Amici, perfect for a catch-up with an old friend. I’d not seen Ian, a former colleague from our local newspaper days, in many months and this proved to be the perfect setting for a long night of gossip about former colleagues, laughter, good food and delicious wine. Ian chose a classic starter in the form of bresaola (£8), thinly sliced cured beef with rocket salad and parmesan shavings. The beef was a fabulous dark red colour, very moist and slightly spicy – perfect. For mains my mixed grilled fish of the day with lemon juice and extra virgin olive oil (£26) brought further confirmation that Amici has gone to some lengths to source some excellent, fresh seafood. This was a platter to savour with a dazzling selection including cod, mackerel, scallops, prawns and langoustines. I loved it all but the butter-soft scallops and intensely rich mackerel with its scorched skin were particularly flavoursome. Meanwhile Ian selected from the daily specials selection a plate of lobster ravioli (£14.50) with asparagus and prawns in a crab sauce. It was a rich, warming dish, ideal for an unseasonably chilly summer evening.

We shared superlative sides. The classic zucchini fritte (£4) always take me back to summer holidays all over the Med, roast potatoes (£4) were as crunchy and delicious as I’ve ever experienced and a dish of garden peas with pancetta and white onions (£4) rounded our main course off nicely. You can’t help but notice the spectacular wine cellar, placed front and centre for all to see when you first walk in to Amici, and there’s an excellent list of Italian wines with many by the glass including the fabulous fish-friendly Frascati (£6.25 per large glass). Having begun the evening with a daring starter we ended in traditional style with tiramisu (£6.50), rich and creamy with a proper coffee hit and tartufo al limoncello (£6.50), lemon ice cream with a liquid liqueur centre rolled in crushed meringue. Made with Italian lemons, it was a dessert with a devilishly sharp kick. With excellent double espressos (£3) to round things off this was a superlative meal in a setting to match. Bringing up baby PHOEBE FULLER PILOTS THE PRICEY PATH OF PARENTHOOD. umans: we’re an expensive bunch, aren’t we? With a constantly evolving need for something or another – a need to pass time, a need to FILL time, a need to see this or own that... most of our needs (ahem, wants!) don’t come free or, sadly, even cheap. But what about the littlest among us – the ones with the chubby cheeks, tiny fingernails, and soft tufts of hair – just how expensive are babies? Well, they aren’t exactly low-cost because, let’s not forget, they don’t stay babies forever…

H

The changing of times Findings from the Centre of Economic and Business Research tells us that the cost of raising a child has increased by 63 per cent since 2003 – that’s almost twice the annual rate of inflation. There is strong evidence to suggest that childcare and education are the main contributing factors to this increase, given that they now account for 62 per cent of parental spending. This financial rise could be the reason for another recent trend: going child-free (‘free’ being the operative word!). According to the Office for National Statistics, the percentage of women choosing to not have children has doubled in a generation too, with 18 per cent of women born in 1970 being child-free by the time they’re 45. This, compared to just nine per cent for those born in 1946, tells us that the cost of bringing up a child or two may be just too great for some to bear, especially as this cost is steadily on the rise. Fifteen years ago, Northside tracked the financial cost of bringing up Emily, an imagined first-born to affluent parents, and found that she’d cost mum and dad a whopping £276,394 from birth to age 18. But for those who haven’t been put off by the cost of child-rearing, just how much would Emily cost in 2019? Let’s find out, shall we? Northside | www.northsidemagazine.co.uk 87

Emily as a newborn Okay, this is the biggest part, isn’t it? You stock up on the essentials and prepare yourself – seriously, prepare yourself! – for the huge expenditure because, after all, you’ll only need to do this once, right? Right?! So we’ve got to get a crib, some bedding, a mobile, a pram, a changing bag and mat, some bottles and a breast pump, oh not forgetting a baby bath! Plus there’s a car seat, safety equipment, a monitor, towels, flannels, pyjamas, clothes, shoes, toys and a weekly nappy and food expenditure that will equal £20+ a month. But before any of that you’re going to have to fork out £125+ on maternity clothes, surprise! Total: £2,167 Mothercare Journey pushchair, from £299. www.mothercare.com

Retro Rio nursery furniture set in white, £1,885. www.cuckooland.com

She’s growing so fast! Blimey, those six months have flown by, time to restock. She’s outgrown her crib, so you’ll need to buy her a new cot and mattress at £445. Next up you’re going to want to give your arms a rest now that she’s getting bigger – read: heavier – so you can expect to pay £100 for a multi-position shoulder carry. Bigger baby means bigger clothes, that’ll be a minimum – yes, I said minimum – spend of £146. More nappies and food will jump to £57+ each month, so set aside some extra pennies for that. And perhaps you’ll want to start incorporating a break one night a month? Keep enough money for an £8 per hour babysitter, not to mention 47 weeks of daycare when you eventually go back to work, which brings us to a staggering… Total: £34,852 Running total: £37,019

Starting school At the tender age of three, Emily can begin preschool and it’s a good’un – a highly-rated independent school close to home; but convenience and high OFSTED ratings come at a price: £12,600 for the year. Next up is infant school and doesn’t she look wonderful in her smart school uniform? You should hope so, it cost you £334. Not to mention the cost of the school itself which is £27,648, then another £28,692 for three years of junior school; and compulsory school lunches on top of that – over 500 quid per year, for seven years – and yet more uniform to buy… this is getting expensive. Total: £69,890 Running total: £106,909

Uh-oh, teenage years You’ve spent so much on preparing her for the world up to this point, it would be daft to stop now. Give her the chance to spread her wings a bit and send her to a lovely boarding school in York, far enough away for her to have some independence but close enough that she can come home when she needs; seven years at Queen Ethelburga’s will set you back £256,620. With this newfound freedom comes the desire for her to start choosing her own clothes and leisure activities, so throw in £15 a week pocket money for her and pay the £27 a month mobile phone bill. Oh, she’s going to need a laptop for school too, so get her the £1,080 MacBook that everyone’s been talking about. Total: £266,508 Running total: £373,417

Don’t forget the gig tickets...

And not forgetting… Family holidays, with one extra person aboard you’ll be looking at an average extra cost of £1,500 per holiday. Then there are the holidays and trips away with friends that Emily will want to take as she gets older, so expect around £400+ per trip. Maybe she’ll get into gaming, so an Xbox will set you back £449, and a TV to play it on will be £2,999 if you want to go top-of-theline. She’s bound to like music, so expect anywhere from £30-60 for each gig she begs and begs you to let her go to. And then, the final nail in the coffin of good credit: Christmas and birthdays which, surprisingly, aren’t that expensive when you compare them to the cost of her education. The average total birthday and Christmas spend on a child up until age 18 is £12,528 – let’s just hope she doesn’t have hideously expensive taste. Total: £17,936 and counting… Grand total: £389,181+

Final reckoning… So in 15 short years, the cost of raising Emily has risen by £112,787 – ouch. But wait, there’s more! If Emily had pursued a university education back then, she’d have had tuition fee loans of anywhere from £1,000 to £3,000 and an average starting salary of £19,000, meaning she could have potentially afforded a tidy little house or flat for herself following graduation – the average house price in 2004 was only about £126,000, quite respectable. Nowadays though, Emily will be leaving university having racked up a minimum £27,000 of debt – not forgetting maintenance loan repayments which would total somewhere around £12,000. Sadly though, starting salaries haven’t increased in kind and remain at the £19,000 mark while house prices in Yorkshire now average anywhere from £170,000 to £200,000 – so it seems the odds are stacked against her (parents) who will likely be footing the bill for a little while after her 18th birthday. Better get saving!

Develop and shine SET THEM ON THE RIGHT PATH AT MOORLANDS NURSERY. ounded in 1898, Moorlands is the oldest prep school in Leeds, offering children a unique allround education that combines tradition and experience with a modern, child focused and forward looking approach – encouraging each individual to develop and shine. The school’s motto is “Intrepide!” or “Be Brave!” and all Moorlands pupils are encouraged to live up to this – whether this means just “having a go” or trying something new. Key to this is the school’s pastoral care, rated “Excellent” by the Independent Schools Inspectorate, which creates a caring and supportive environment where children can expand their horizons and flourish. And nowhere is this more important than in the Early Years.

F

Step into the newly refurbished Moorlands School Nursery and you will be greeted by engaged and happy children aged two to four making the most of the well-equipped, bright and spacious facilities. The qualified and experienced nursery staff understand that the transition from home to school is a major step for children and parents alike and work to make this move as smooth as possible, bearing in mind the specific needs of each child. Moorlands Nursery has a flexible approach, taking into consideration family requirements. Nursery children can do any combination of mornings or full days, with a minimum of four sessions (half a day). During this time, they take part in structured literacy and numeracy sessions alongside ‘in-the-moment’ planning, based on each

individual child’s thoughts and interests. The children make the most of Moorlands’ stunning grounds, enjoy specialist ‘Forest School’ activities as well as swimming in the on-site pool and music, drama and French sessions. A particularly special part of Moorlands Nursery life is spending time with older pupil “Buddies”. Wonderful friendships develop and the effect on the children’s confidence and social skills is a delight to see. This really isn’t just any ordinary nursery! In fact, Moorlands is often described as “a hidden gem in the heart of North Leeds”. The parents of Moorlands pupils have this to say: “Moorlands celebrates the individual child” “A caring atmosphere with an exceptionally dedicated staff team” “It’s a family – the children all look after each other, across the year groups” – Parent Survey 2017 Choosing the right Nursery is the first, most important step on any child’s educational journey. Set your child on the right path – the Moorlands Way.

With options changing every half term, the enrichment programme is a uniquely rich platform for pupils to develop their interests and talents to an even deeper level, or to have a go at something completely new. “Whilst the National Curriculum is very important, school should also be about preparing children for everyday life,” says Stuart Bayne, Deputy Head at the leading Independent School. “Being non-selective, we encourage a breadth of

GIGGLESWICK SCHOOL HAS BEEN ACKNOWLEDGED AS BEING AN EXCEPTIONAL PLACE TO LIVE, STUDY AND PLAY.

All aboard iggleswick School were delighted and extremely proud to hear that they were one of only three schools in the country to be shortlisted for the Boarding Refurbishment and Extension Award 2019 as part of the British Boarding Schools’ Association (BSA) annual awards. The award acknowledges the work that schools have put in to provide pupils with an exceptional place to live, study and play. In September 2018, the school completed the first phase of a multimillion-pound investment into their boarding houses with the refurbishment of Nowell House. The project has been the result of extensive collaboration with pupils, house staff, architects and interior designers to create a new leading-edge model of family-friendly boarding at Giggleswick. Headteacher Mark Turnbull, said: “We

G

wanted to create a house environment that would make a tangible difference to the lives of our students and staff. Our challenge has been to ‘future proof ’ our provision to meet the changing needs of families and the expectation of our pupils. “Our buildings allowed us to be more creative and better organise our accommodation in a way that maintains the integrity of house structures whilst allowing flexibility in how space is used to provide the best home from home experience for everyone from full boarders to flexi boarders and day pupils.” The redesign is now more reflective of a family home where pupils spend their day on the lower floor of the house – in the living areas, kitchen space, individual and shared studies. In the evenings, the boarders will then come together as a wider community across three houses on the upper floors. This has now laid the path for a longer term plan and model for boarding provision. Paley and Shute houses are next in line for refurbishment and the boarding floor will expand as part of this rolling programme.

Giggleswick was shortlisted for the award alongside Brighton College and St Leonards. All three schools were praised for demonstrating excellence in design, innovation and sustainability in their projects and the final award was presented to Brighton College at the BSA Annual Conference for Heads in front of an audience made up of delegates from the UK’s leading independent schools. As a modern boarding and day school, Giggleswick offer a wide range of options tailored to fit the needs and lifestyles of families. You can choose to be a day pupil, a full boarder, three or five-night flexi boarder or board occasionally if there is an activity in school that’s not to be missed. Just grab a cuppa and a good book. £92.95 www.melodymaison.co.uk Cosy doesn’t have to mean clutter. While Hygge-ing the garden is about experiencing the sights and sounds of nature, it’s also about getting cosy. It all starts with a comfy outdoor lounge setting. PROMOTION

Give your home a beautiful transformation THE EXPERT TEAM AT FURNISH & FETTLE WOULD LOVE TO HELP YOU. lyn and Eleanor Goddard, owners of Furnish & Fettle, understand that home is the most important place, so much so that it underpins why they went into the business to start with. Tired of corporate careers and time away from home, Glyn and Eleanor wanted to run their own business so that they could be around while their children grew up. They both have a passion for property renovation and Eleanor has always been obsessed with interior design, so when they saw that James Brindley in Wetherby was for sale it felt like the perfect fit for them.

G

“It was like that moment when you find your forever home,” says Eleanor. “It was a perfect fit for us as having an experienced team in place meant that we could be confident in offering our customers a high standard of service from the start,” says Glyn. The business has evolved in the three years that they have owned it. A second showroom is now open in Harrogate near Valley Gardens and plans are underway to make some exciting changes to this over the next few months. New team members have been brought on board to further enhance the interior design offering. Whilst the team love sharing the journey, not everyone wants to be involved in the process, but instead prefer to adopt a more hands off approach which is fine. Ultimately, it’s whatever people are most comfortable with. “We are noticing a definite trend toward people embracing the concept of using an interior designer to help them

create a look they love for their home. People are busy and idea of trapesing around the shops or trawling the internet in their precious free time isn’t always appealing, especially when there is the option that an expert can do it for you,” says Glyn. “People used to think that it was only the super rich ‘footballer’s wife’ types that used an interior designer, but now people can appreciate the value than a professional can add. Expensive mistakes will be avoided and the finished result will be a stunning cohesive scheme that they love.” Another misconception that Eleanor and Glyn are keen to allay is that interior designers are intimidating and push their way out ideas onto their clients. “Our team are all really friendly. Their job is to listen to what a client is wanting to achieve and to translate that into a scheme they love, taking into account the practicalities as well as the budget they are comfortable spending. They will make suggestions that might take clients out of their comfort zone, but they also understand that it’s their home and that it is the client that must love it not them!” says Eleanor. If you are thinking that this might sound like the sort of the service you would appreciate, you are welcome to visit either of the showrooms in Wetherby or Harrogate to browse the Glyn and inspirational room sets and Eleanor Goddard to find out more. Majorly impressive THE OPEN CHAMPIONSHIP RECENTLY RETURNED TO ROYAL PORTRUSH AFTER AN ABSENCE OF 68 YEARS TO HUGE ACCLAIM. A FEW WEEKS BEFORE THE CHAMPIONSHIP JOHN MURPHY VISITED THE COURSE AND IS NOT SURPRISED THAT IT IS NOW BEING HAILED BY MANY AS THE BEST LINKS COURSE TO HOST A GOLFING MAJOR. n this summer of glorious sporting events one of the stand-out highlights must be the epic 148th Open Championship played at Royal Portrush last month, culminating in Ireland’s latest favourite son, Shane Lowry, being crowned Champion Golfer of The Year. The headline grabbing story was obviously Lowry’s win on home soil – the first Irishman to ever do so. But there were so much else to admire and enjoy about the Open and so many other stories lasting from first tee-off in the early hours of day one to the last balls being smacked down the first hole on the final day by this year’s concluding pairing, Lowry and Southport’s very own, Tommy Fleetwood. The event was simply sensational and was more than the organisers could, in their wildest dreams, have hoped for as the Open returned to Royal Portrush after 68 years. This year’s tournament and the one in 1951 being the only two times the Open has been staged outside England or Scotland. The level of unanimous acclaim which greeted the championship as the final curtain fell can be gauged by the fact that there is now a very real prospect that the course will get the nod for a return in 2024 ahead of the more pedestrian Royal Lytham. So aside from the marvellous synergy of Lowry’s victory in the most historical

of majors what else made the event such a run-away success? First and foremost must be the course itself. It would be hard to find a more beautiful strip of land anywhere in the world. A spectacular quilted green patchwork separated from the rolling Atlantic waves by white beaches (“strands”) that stretch for as long as the eye can see below vast, rugged cliffs. Standing on the fifth green, yards from a cliff edge with the sun glistening on the water and reflecting the whites and greys of the beaches and cliffs you could be forgiven for thinking that you are standing on the edge of the world. Further down the coastline is the mystical Giant’s Causeway and closer still, perched on the headland, is Dunluce Castle after which the famous links of Royal Portrush is named. This tiny

corner of Northern Ireland is a magical place of stunning beauty and dreams. It’s little wonder that much of Game of Thrones was filmed here. Lowry himself seemed to have stepped off the Causeway as he strode down fairways and smited balls out of the desperate rough with heroic strength and length: maybe he could have a part in the next run of the cult series? The design of the course is also fantastic. The Harry Colt (also responsible for designing Sheffield’s Hallamshire course) masterpiece is essentially a very fair course and as such is accessible to the average club golfer. There are very few blind shots and the fairways are quite generous, with the exception of the first with out-of-bounds to right and left as Rory McIlroy found to his horror with the opening shot of his ill-fated challenge. Interestingly no two consecutive holes run in the same direction and there is a great set of par 3s, with the highlight being the aptly named Calamity 16th. The drive is over 200 yards, often into the wind, and there is a sheer valley of thick rough running all along the right-hand side of the hole. The two new holes at 7 and 8 have also been seamlessly incorporated into the Colt course, as if they have been everpresent. The dangers come when balls stray off the fairway and end up in the strangling rough, comprised of tall fescue grass,

wild flowers, brambles and bracken. Normally moving the ball some 50 yards is success, so seeing the professionals hit the ball so far out of these dangerous spots is awe-inspiring. The narrow slithers of greens are also very difficult: up-turned saucers with run-off areas, humps, bumps and hollows. It was Lowry’s nerveless chipping onto these manicured saucers that set him apart in his final two rounds. The condition of the course also impressed commentators and competitors alike. BBC’s Ken Brown stated that Royal Portrush was in the best ever condition for an Open that he had seen. Sky’s Rich Beem commented that Royal Portrush was the best links course he had seen and had the opportunity to play on. Nick Faldo simply stated: “Absolutely the best.” Player after player also lined up to hail the venue. Among the fans was Paul Casey who labelled the course his favourite among the Open roster. The huge crowd and the atmosphere it created was another reason for the unmitigated success of the championship. At 240,000 this was the second largest gathering for an Open. The Irish welcomed its return with open arms, joy and such enthusiasm, boosted by Lowry’s heroics, that the noise was more akin to a football stadium than a

golf course and no-one complained. Of course golf in Northern Ireland is not solely about Royal Portrush. A few miles down the causeway coastal route is Portstewart, home of the 2017 Irish Open. The opening nine holes must be among the most spectacular opening holes in the United Kingdom with fairways snaking between monstrous sand dunes, where stunning views of the wild Atlantic can be found. One of the reasons why Royal Portrush was overlooked for so many years was concern over the surrounding infrastructure, especially accommodation. The nearby Bushmills Inn would have been full to the rafters and it makes a wonderful base from which to explore the area, golfing or not. Many spectators would have descended on Belfast, only an hour’s drive from this small part of the Antrim coastline. A grand city of Georgian, Victorian and Edwardian architecture, Belfast has many attractions including the iconic Titanic Belfast. The building, shaped like the bows of a ship, tells the story from the building of the liner in “boomtown” Belfast to its fateful maiden voyage. Half a day would do the impressive experience justice with highlights being a chair ride into the bowels of the ship as it is being constructed and a

mesmerising video show that takes you to every floor of the luxurious liner. Golfers will want to hone their skills before travelling north and nearby Belvoir and Galgorm Castle (home of this year’s Northern Irish Open) provide ideal tests. The former is a delightful tree-lined course, only three miles from the city centre and the latter is an attractive, tricky course with plenty of water hazards. It is also part of an impressive hotel complex which incorporates a very good restaurant. Belfast is a city of fine hospitality. The boutique Ten Square Hotel is a lively and comfortable base from which to explore and quality restaurants abound, with Café Parisien being particularly enjoyable. If it’s time to slate a thirst with a pint of creamy Guinness then Belfast’s oldest pub, The Crown Liquor Store, and McHugh’s, which is supposedly Belfast’s oldest building come highly recommended.
