Rural retreat COUNTRY CHIC HAS BEEN GIVEN A MODERN TWIST. BY PHOEBE SEYMOUR. orget everything you thought you knew about country décor. Forget the traditional chequered sofas, animal ornaments and distressed shabby chic furniture. This year, it’s all about adding a modern twist to a classic British look. No country home would be complete without a sumptuous armchair, but opt for one with metallic legs or a less typical shape to give your living room an edge. Stoves and kettles are more cottage-esque must-haves for those colder spring days, as are plenty of blankets, but ditch the tartan for on-trend geometric or plain throws in neutral beiges or warming browns. Reclaimed furniture is another way to add a rough and ready, yet stylish, centrepiece to your dining and living areas. Wicker baskets,

IN BRIEF
Vote for Bumford Heating Limited It’s been an extra special year for Barnsley-based business, Bumford Heating Limited. Not only are they celebrating their 50th anniversary, they are also pleased to announce they are in the running for the Heating Installer Awards 2018. After being named the North East and Yorkshire regional winner, Bumfords are now up for the ‘UK’s best plumber or heating installer’ title. Bumfords are specialist installers of underfloor heating, are Worcester Bosch accredited and are a five-star Which? Trusted Trader. Chris Bumford started the business in his spare bedroom in Wincobank in 1968. However, the family business is looking firmly to the future of heating, having recently opened an interactive showroom, kitted out with all the latest technology including touch screen smart controls. Bumfords are now based in Hoyland, where they are well placed to serve homes and businesses in the Barnsley and Sheffield area and beyond. “We’re over the moon to have won the award for the North East and Yorkshire, and would like to thank our customers for nominating us,” said managing director, Neil Bumford. “At Bumford Heating Limited, we are incredibly passionate about the work we do and aim to provide the best level of service possible to all customers. “We’d love to win the overall award, particularly in our 50th year, and would like to encourage our community to vote for us to win the Heating Installer Awards 2018.” To vote for Bumfords, visit www.heatinginstallerawards.co.uk.
Ecclesfield Priory Players present Ladies Day The Ecclesfield Priory Players (EPPiC) are proud to present their production of Ladies Day at their theatre on Well Lane from Tuesday 15 to Saturday 19 May at 7.30pm. Ladies’ Day is a comedy drama by Amanda Whittington about four unlikely lasses from Hull, who decide to take a day trip to the races. The play has proved hugely popular with amateur groups across the UK. Tickets are £8.50 (concessions £7.50 on Tuesdays and Wednesdays only) and are available from 21 April. Call 0114 240 2624, visit ecclesfieldprioryplayers.co.uk, or drop in for their weekly Saturday coffee morning in the theatre lounge after 11am.
BUMFORDS’ TOP TIPS Each month, Neil Bumford MD of Bumford Heating, tells us one of his top tips to keep our homes warm and energy efficient throughout the colder months. Install a smart thermostat – By installing a smart thermostat, you can start to save even more energy because it will stop you warming rooms you don’t use. A smart thermostat will learn how long it takes to heat a home and then turn the heating on at exactly the right time to bring it up to temperature. You can also control it via your phone, so you no longer have to come back to a cold home or you can turn the heating off if you have left it on. Smart thermometers can cost a few hundred pounds, but some of the more advanced models could save customers as much as a third on their heating bills. For more information about Bumford Heating, visit www.bumfords.com.
Charity Golf Day Crucible Sales & Lettings are hosting a Charity Golf Day and are inviting other companies to get involved. The golf day, taking place at Sitwell Golf Club on Friday 29 June, will help raise money for PACT (Parents Association of Children with Tumours and Leukaemia). The letting and sales company, with branches based at Chapeltown and Hillsborough, are always keen to help their local community and regularly host fundraising events. An Event Partner Sponsorship Package includes online and offline marketing before the event and a half page advert in the programme, your branding on display and social media acknowledgement on the day. Hole and halfway house sponsorship opportunities are also available on a first come, first served basis. There are so many fantastic reasons to get involved. It provides an opportunity for your company to support and sponsor one of the largest local charities at one of Crucible’s biggest events of the year and it’s a great way to raise your company’s profile and brand awareness. To take part, contact Crucible for an entry form. The entry fee is £160 for four players and includes a bacon butty in the morning and pie, chips and peas after the game. There are lots of prizes for winners and runners up for grabs. GARDENS
Spicing up a small space WHO SAYS SIZE MATTERS? WHEN IT COMES TO YOUR GARDEN, YOU DON’T NEED ROOM TO IMPRESS, WRITES EMILY SMITH. ring life back into your home this spring by making the most of a small garden. With winter well behind us, there’s no excuse to keep your backyard on the back-burner – and reviving limited outdoor space doesn’t need to be a game of Tetris. Grab your shovel and dig into these tips on growing a green thumb.
B
Upcycling Rather than throwing away old wooden furniture, tempt your creative side by repurposing them outdoors. Repaint and reuse broken shelves as storage for plants, use bright chairs to add a quirky character, or even repurpose a birdbath as a plant pot. With upcycling you can make the most of what you already have, without any extra spending.
Adjust the lighting Turn up the lights – and the liveliness – of a small garden by adding a sense of spark. Combining fairy lights within foliage, dotting lanterns around furniture, or even highlighting a pathway, can all jazz up a gloomy space. This growing trend has seen solar powered lighting skyrocket, so maintenance isn’t an issue for scatter-brains. www.thesolarcentre.co.uk

GARDENS
A pop of colour Through perky plant pots and cheerful furniture, a small pop of colour can go a long way for a small space. Freshening up with florals gives a brighter appearance, and doing this through pots allows hassle-free portability when you fancy a change.
Plant hangers Grow your garden upwards with hanging planters, without jeopardising precious floor space. Ceramic plant hangers, flower baskets, and tiered pots allow you to exploit all angles of your backyard, and they can even be made at home. Incorporate wooden climbers along walls for vines to spread on, for an even cosier feel.
Fire features
Flowing features
Fire pits add a striking style – and a surge of heat – to a chilly garden, all whilst having a cosy feel. Adding anything from a chiminea, barbeque, or a contemporary fire pit means the excuse of it being too cold won’t be an issue, and is perfect for an evening get together.
Implementing a water-based feature brings a calming flow to your garden with minimal effort. A bird bath, tiered fountain or cascading water piece can sit happily in any corner of your garden and take up little room, or act as a grand centrepiece.

Houseplants Bring the houseplant bandwagon into your home by adding low-maintenance plants to empty shelves or windowsills. This feel-good décor technique will see you reap the benefits of air purification, reducing levels of dust and stabilising air temperatures. Pothos plants, English Ivy or Peace Lilies are promising picks. www.midwestliving.com/garden/container/super-easy-house-plants
Grow your own With the growing trend of health consciousness, knowing how and where your food comes from is something we’re all aware of. Growing your own herbs and spices at home – from tomatoes to lavender – allows you combine practicality with charm, all whilst eliminating the worry of where your food has come from. www.rhs.org.uk/advice/grow-your-own @PulseRMC

he sun was shining as Fox Valley hosted its first event of the spring – the Special Occasions Fayre at Sandersons Boutique Store. The day-long event, from 11am to 5pm on 25 March, was aimed at helping customers to prepare for those special events coming up in 2018, including milestone birthdays, proms, race days and weddings. Sandersons shoppers were welcomed with a glass of bubbly, while the first 100 guests were given goody bags. The Sandersons team showcased carefully selected mens and ladies occasion wear with collections from top brands including Phase Eight, Ted Baker, Hobbs and Remus Uomo. Over in the Beauty Lounge, the store’s experts were demonstrating make-up to complete customers’ looks, while Benefit Cosmetics were taking bookings for brow waxing and tinting. Downstairs, in-store florist Fleur de Lys displayed some gorgeous arrangements for all kinds of events, while local independent businesses including magician Andy Taylor, wedding planning service You Said Yes and Anthony Oxley Photography were all on hand to discuss customers’ needs. Upstairs, Zoe Wadsworth of Fab Events talked to customers about parties and weddings of all budgets, Natalie Mosley was available to discuss her Lucy May lingerie range, and Katie Ford from Fit4It gave a talk about her ten-week transformation plan, Shine Bright Like a Diamond. Outside, The Gin Wagon was serving delicious cocktails and the bandstand hosted a range of music, including a rock choir, which saw a huge crowd singing along. Sandersons store supervisor and event organiser, Amy Hodgkinson, said: “Today is about promoting all that the store has to offer, with everything from clothing to homeware perfect for wedding gifts, as well as presenting some of the best local suppliers, from Hummingbird Bridal Studio based here at Fox Valley, to Rotherham-based wedding planners You Said Yes and more. This is an annual event and we look forward to an even bigger and better event next year.”

Simon at a club in Germany
Simon with Nigel Bond in Red Square, Moscow, Russia
Lucky break SHEFFIELD MAY BE THE HOME OF SNOOKER BUT ITS REPUTATION IS GLOBAL, SOMETHING EXPERT TABLE-MAKER SIMON BARKER HAS USED TO HIS ADVANTAGE – CHALKING UP A FEW AIR MILES ALONG THE WAY. BY PHOEBE SEYMOUR. nooker might not strike you as a sport that comes with a rock’n’roll lifestyle, but it seems even those out of the spotlight get to do their fair share of jet-setting. “It’s like being a rock star, only with snooker tables,” joked Simon Barker, head of Barker Billiards and maker of snooker tables for the stars. “You don’t always get time to properly appreciate it. Saying that, I stayed in a hotel in Athens overlooking the Acropolis, which was amazing! “I think my best work trip was Detroit at the beginning of last year. I went to Lake Michigan, Motown and called into New York on the way back. Australia was good. I went in a Jeep around Australia, to Melbourne and down to Saint Kilda to the beach… I did work by the way!” Simon’s job consists of creating and delivering snooker tables to everywhere, from the Star Snooker Academy in Shiregreen (where we met), to some of the best snooker clubs in China – the only place in the world that is probably more snooker-mad than Sheffield.
S

Over his 34 year career, Simon has worked on snooker tables for some of the biggest names in the business including Peter Ebdon, Nigel Bond, Stephen Hendry, Ding Junhui and Ronnie O’Sullivan – to name drop a few. Further to this, he’s installed tables for television shows including The Price is Right, Darling Buds of May and at Wentworth Woodhouse for the film adaptation of David Walliams’ children’s book, Billionaire Boy, as well as at the former palace of Diana, Princess of Wales and the home of Eddie Stobart Group CEO, Andrew Tinkler. And just in case you think it sounds like a Working in Damascus, Syria

cushy way to make a living, transporting and lugging around 12ft by 6ft snooker tables weighing a whopping one and a quarter tonnes each is no easy feat. And there is so much more that goes into creating the perfect table besides. “They’re not like your club tables. These have heaters on for a start,” he says gesturing at the table in front of us. “You can see they have little wires underneath so that heats the slate up a bit and keeps the cloth on the bed dry and moisture-free, which makes the ball run better. “Then they have steel block cushions with steel plates so you’ve got an extra response from them. The actual cut and width is much smaller than you’d find in an average club table pocket. You get a club player on these and they’re like a fish out of water because they are so different. All the pockets are templated too, whereas most of the pockets are different sizes in clubland. “We do all sorts – lacquer tables, black and white tables, red cloths, blue cloths, luminous cloths. We do American pool tables, English pool, carom billiards without pockets, Chinese
INTERVIEW
pyramid tables… The cloths are usually green with snooker though – I don’t like to change it. I’m a bit of an old traditionalist.” Simon started out as a joiner, which involved refurbishing snooker tables. This led him to renovating tables for Allied Billiards, before joining the world-renowned Riley and installing the tables for big tournaments and the World Championships. Then in 1996, he made the leap into setting up his own business. The World Snooker Championship has certainly put Sheffield on the map, having graced The Crucible stage every year since 1977. The snooker club scene in Sheffield exploded from this point on, and being trained at a snooker academy in the Steel City became the highest badge of honour. “I can’t believe when I travel round, how many people know Sheffield. I just went to Russia with Nigel [Bond] and there was a guy with a Made in Sheffield T-shirt on in Moscow. There’s even a club in Morocco called The Sheffield Academy.” So will Simon be in the front row watching all the action at The Crucible this month? “I always go. I’ve been going for the last 25 years. It’s good every year. It’s good for the city and the hotels, but I think it’s more than that. I know it’s only for two weeks, but it gives Sheffield a big presence in the world.
When asked who he was going to bet on to win this year however, he was a little reluctant to say. “It’s awkward sometimes because if I’ve got two friends that are playing each other, I don’t like to comment. I like to see exciting players. You just can’t say anything against Ronnie though can you? Even the professionals are in awe of him. But then again sometimes he turns up and he’s not the Ronnie you expect – depends what head he’s got on that day.” Not just an enthusiast, Simon has played his fair share of snooker tournaments over the years. “I’ve played in the leagues. I still play in the Sheffield and District Snooker Association League. I’m not bad, but I’m nothing like these! They do this every single day of their lives. I play squash more than I play snooker. I play in the leagues at squash too.” I left the Star Snooker Academy feeling a little more knowledgeable about the game, but then I made a faux pas – I walked past Nigel Bond as he took a shot on one of the huge Barker Billiard tables. “Oh, it’s bad luck that!” said Simon, only half-joking as I squeezed past. Let’s hope I haven’t jinxed Nigel’s prospects at the 2018 Betfred World Championship.
Catch all the World Championship action at The Crucible from 21 April to 7 May 2018. Move fast to book the last few remaining tickets at www.cruciblesnooker.com or watch it on the big screen at Tudor Square.

LOOKING BACK
From pictures to potting POPULAR SNOOKER CLUB’S HISTORY DATES BACK TO THE EARLY DAYS OF CINEMA. n this month’s Pulse, we interview Simon Barker, head of Barker Billiards and maker of snooker tables for the stars, ahead of the 2018 World Snooker Championship at The Crucible. In keeping with this theme, we take a look at the changing faces of a local snooker club. Cue Ball Snooker Club on Station Road has been a firmly established part of Chapeltown as far back as most locals can remember, but the building itself dates back much further. Printed in local history book, Ecclesfield, Chapeltown & High Green Through Time by Mel and Joan Jones, this photo depicts this majestic building’s early days as a cinema. The
I
film poster for ‘Neath the Lion’s Paw dates the photo to 1914. The accompanying caption says: “In the foreground is the Picture Palace, which opened December 1912 and closed in March 1963. During the silent film era there were two shows every evening, starting at 6.30pm and 8.30pm. The silent films were accompanied by a trio piano, violin and double bass. ‘Talkies’ were first shown in January 1931. On Saturday 16 March 1963, the last films shown were Lone Star and King Solomon’s Mines. Three days later, the Palace re-opened as the Palace Casino with Star bingo. It is now a snooker club.” History buffs may also be interested to know
that Station Road was formerly named Furnace Lane. After the railway station opened on White Lane in 1897, the road was renamed. Local film buffs, on the other hand, will appreciate this photo of The Cinema House (and the Arundel Public House next door) in Ecclesfield taken from the book, Ecclesfield, Chapeltown & High Green From Old Photograph by the same authors. The caption says: “The Cinema House was built in 1920 and was closed and demolished in the 1970s. The main entrance is flanked by two shops, one of which was a sweet shop handily located so that cinemagoers could buy their chocolates and toffees and crinkle their wrappers during the performance! GREEN DREAM
HANNAH SANDERS MEETS A FAMILY REALISING THEIR AMBITION TO BUILD THE MOST ECO-FRIENDLY HOME IN SHEFFIELD. t’s the greenest house in Sheffield... and until now it has probably been one of the city’s best-kept secrets. Mention Pinegrove Country Club to most people and, if they remember it at all, they will recall a sports and social club in Stannington that had a few very successful years back in the 1980s and ‘90s. It faded from public consciousness after going out of business, falling into disrepair and being subject to a series of arson attacks. But this mouldering venue was the unlikely site chosen by local businessman Mike Haver to create a stunning, self-contained, ecofriendly family home. Mike runs a building maintenance company and his wife Meg is a consultant at the Northern General. Alongside Meg’s mother Dorothy they have combined to create a oneof-a-kind house with vision, passion and an

eye for detail that truly makes it stand alone. “We wanted to create a home that was selfsustaining and energy-efficient, focusing on future-proofing. We are quite passionate about our impact on the environment. We wanted somewhere we could live our lives as green as possible,” said Meg. “The wonderful thing about Sheffield is that you have the fingers of green that feed into the city, which made it a great place for the build.” Before settling on the former sports club, they considered other sites including Grenoside Primary School, The Old Chapel at Middlewood Hospital, Claremont House, Loxley and Brantwood School, Nether Edge but after much deliberation, feasibility studies and costing, finally settled on Pinegrove. “We hadn’t even considered Pinegrove until a chance drive past after visiting the Robin

Hood pub in Little Matlock. The site caught our eye, so of course we went to investigate, and ideas just starting pouring out of us. But then the difficult task came of trying to find out who owned it,” said Mike. “There was no for ‘sale sign’, just a derelict building. The company listed as owning it was no longer trading and the solicitors had been taken over by a larger firm, meaning we had our work cut out for us. It was our architect who suggested contacting the bank and, after bouncing from one person to the next, eventually a commercial land agent called us in regard to purchasing the site.” The area itself is a brownfield site in the greenbelt, consisting of 13 acres, eight of which is woodland along with 700m of riverbank along the river Loxley. “Before we demolished the site, we needed to safely remove a family of pipistrelle bats
FEATURE
who had been roosting underneath the roof. “We had to get a license for doing this from Natural England, which we were granted, and then an ecologist came to catch the three bats. Once the house was built we had to put up bat boxes just in case, but they haven’t returned so have obviously found somewhere far nicer to roost.” Other problems were on a significantly larger scale and proved to be a test of both patience and ingenuity. The whole site consists of inert landfill, meaning the house had to be built on piles. In December 2012, when demolition began, the Havers family wanted to recycle as much of the old building as possible, so the material was later used to form a base layer. “After the foundations had been built, we then fitted two rainwater tanks underground which can store 20,000 litres of rainwater and be used for garden irrigation, flushing toilets and even the washing machine,” said Mike. The house is built on Passivhaus prinicples which means it meets a very high level of energy efficiency, minimising its carbon footprint and resulting in an ultra-low energy building. To meet this standard, it was important for them to make the house airtight and they achieved this by using a combination of Warmcell sustainable insulation, Pavatex woodfibre board and rigid PIR foam board. Mike taped all the joints so no air could escape, and fitted the house with a mechanical ventilation and heat recovery system to minimise smells and stale air without losing heat. “Throughout the build we wanted to utilise local products, so the timber frame was built by Oakworth in Handsworth, the stone is from Stanton Moor in Derbyshire and our floor is limestone sourced from the Peak District,” said Meg. By Christmas 2013, the house was watertight which meant that 6KW solar panels could be fitted to generate electricity. They also had a log boiler installed, which uses wood grown on the site to provide the domestic hot water and underfloor heating. “Throughout the build, there were so many challenges we faced but for me, one of the hardest things was being so physically and

mentally involved 24/7. The number of decisions involved is difficult, but fortunately for us we had a team of three to share the workload. It was great to see everything developing but it was hard living with all the elements that weren’t quite finished,” said Meg. “The fact that it was non-stop was what made it so challenging. Once you had finished one section, you were back on the laptop, planning and ordering materials for the next phase,” added Mike. But all the hard graft was worth it when the couple were able to finally move into a home that, as well as being the greenest in Sheffield, is also stunningly beautiful and truly unlike any other house in the city. The house has an open-plan kitchen, dining room and living room along with five bedrooms, a workshop, a pottery studio, a separate apartment, four bathrooms, two lounge areas and a reading corner overlooking the Loxley valley. They also have bees, vegetable gardens and an expansive greenhouse. The interior is just as breath-taking as the exterior, with pastel shades carefully chosen to coincide with the surrounding nature, and the unique pieces of furniture perfectly combining to create a contemporary and rustic feel. But of course, with a house on this scale the job is never totally finished. The Haver family has just been granted planning permission for a hydro-electric scheme on the near-by weir and
@PulseRMC
they are hoping to start building it in 2019. This will take water from the top of the weir, run it through an Archimedes screw generator and create enough electricity to run the household. “If you came back in five to ten years we would hope that the area outside the walls would be more established as a renewable coppice woodland and we would have a traditional hedge along the roadside. We also would hope to have chickens and be much more self-sufficient when it comes to feeding ourselves. I would hope we would be living as eco-friendly as possible,” said Mike. “When we were building, Kevin McCloud’s Grand Designs book was a lifeline. He explained that there are three elements to a build – the finish, cost and deadline and he doesn’t think you can deliver the same standard on all three. “You have to compromise and for us, although we spent more than we envisioned, the timescale was what we needed to be flexible on. We thought it would take three to five years and here we are six years down the line and still going,” adds Meg. “All of us are proud of the finishes we’ve achieved, being innovative and getting the features that we wanted. “We’ve achieved more than we could’ve ever imagined, and having such a large household with everything working proves that we have designed and built it correctly- it is a real sense of achievement, and it added to our enjoyment when we were able to host a large gathering of family this Christmas.” Pulse | www.sheffieldvibe.com 45

For all seasons JAPAN IS A STUNNING PLACE TO VISIT, AT ANY TIME OF YEAR. pen a world map and you will see the extensive Asia/Pacific region. Almost at the very centre you will see the Japanese archipelago stretching north to south along the edge of the Asian continent. Japan has lured untold number of adventurers since Marco Polo first introduced it to the world back in the 13th century as “Zipangu – the Land of Gold”. Though the Japan of today may not be a land of gold, the “Neo Zipangu” does possess powerful and magnet-like attractions: great cultural variety, colourful and inspiring natural attractions beautifully interwoven by

four distinct seasonal changes, not to mention the overflowing hospitality of its people. As such Japan has recovered from the natural disasters of 2011 and is vigorously gaining in popularity as a tourist destination again which anyone can enjoy on a reasonable budget and with a sense of complete security. This is where the past literally greets the future. This is where they both mingle. Japan has a long history of absorbing advanced cultures from ancient times through the middle ages. Later it began to assimilate elements of western civilisation from the latter half of the 19th century. Through these influences, the country has added rich new dimensions and depth to its indigenous culture. This marvellous harmony between the refinements of everything ‘Oriental’ blended with leading edge technology and the urban lifestyle you find in Japan today is truly proof of its long and eloquent history.
The Seasons No other country has the contrasting seasons that Japan enjoys. If you are undecided when to visit Japan, 46 Pulse | www.pulsemag.co.uk

spring is spectacular when the plum and cherry blossom trees burst into bloom. From the first days of February when the plum blossoms debut in Okinawa, to the last days of May, when the last cherry blossoms fall from the trees of northern Japan, spring is a time of rebirth in the name of nature and human celebration throughout the land with numerous flower festivals being held everywhere. Spring is one of the most popular times to travel and planning and booking early is imperative. Summer is playtime in the land of nature, a season of rice planting and total greenery, summer is a season for visiting Mount Fuji, enjoying the fireworks almost every night and the large scale festivals that will linger through into September, but by October Japan is enjoying the crisp cooler days of its distinct autumn. Autumn brings swirls of changing leaves, vivid hues of crimson, gold, bronze and yellow that paint the hills and mountainsides in carpets of colour, a wonderful time to visit. The Momji maple tree turning a blazing red is not to be missed. Winter offers not only snowfall – a skier’s paradise – but sunshine and blue skies as well as cheaper prices and a quieter time to travel.

CLOCKWISE FROM FAR LEFT: Okayama Castle; Nachi Waterfall; Nara Deer Park; Sagano
The Journey Start your journey in Tokyo, the most exciting metropolis in Asia where traditions from centuries past exist side by side with the ever-moving elements of the latest in urban culture that radiate their own special heat and energy. Most of the clichés are true. Tokyo is neon-wrapped, a hectic playground where trains are never late, vending machines are everywhere, but amid the bright signs and adverts there is also a Zen-like calm, often just a few steps away from the chaos. There is no real centre to Tokyo rather it has sub centres, connected by the circular Yamanote train line. It takes under three hours on the 200mph bullet train from Tokyo to Kyoto, the cultural heart of Japan, an area spared from the air raids of WW2. On the journey you can visit Hakone, an area of natural beauty and UNESCO site and then Mount Fuji, Japan’s spiritual home. Since the mountain is covered in snow most of the year, the official climbing season is limited to July and August. The climb is worthwhile but not easy; a saying goes there are two kinds of fools; those that never climb Fuji and those
that climb it twice. Arriving in the ancient capital for 1,200 years, Kyoto has numerous shrines, temples, palaces and villas, repositories of Japan’s long history, while up in the low mountains that enclose the city, small villages huddle under forested slopes, offering fascinating glimpses of rural life. You will still find geishas in the old Gion district, kimono weavers, sake breweries and numerous craftsmen and storekeepers who carefully maintain the old ways and keep alive the flame of Japan’s traditional culture. From Kyoto you can visit Nara for its parks, temples and museums. While travelling you will feel safe, women can walk safely alone almost anywhere and it’s not unusual to see children riding the subway alone whilst sleeping on trains seems to be a national pastime. Many belongings have been lost only to find them returned intact the very next day. If you travel further south, you’ll find yourself in Hiroshima, a city re-emerged from the atomic bombing, the peace flame burns in front of the memorial cenotaph, never to be extinguished until all nuclear weapons are abolished. A short distance from Hiroshima is the beautiful island of @PulseRMC
Miyajima, home to the Itsukushima shrine, a must-see for all standing alone in the sea. The Shinto shrine is a world heritage site as is known as one of the ‘three views of Japan’. Miyajima island is a romantic place, best enjoyed staying overnight at one of the islands ryokans, a traditional Japanese inn. Numerous superb hot spring resorts, known as ‘onsens’, are in fact ryokans built on the site of a hot spring. There are some 55,000 ryokans in Japan; a room in a ryokan will usually contain an undivided room floored with tatami matting, while sleeping on a ‘futon’ bedding laid out by maids and a traditional evening meal and breakfast. Make the beautiful island of Okinawa your final stop, the perfect chance to relax on a beautiful beach, sub-tropical coral reefs, emerald seas, sunny skies and tropical vegetation abound. There are more than 150 islands stretching a chain of 250 miles. There is no litter and no bins either, this is always taken home. This is an example of the remarkable social cohesion that Japan enjoys intertwined with its heart-warming hospitality makes it such a pleasant place to live and to visit. Japan awaits you… Pulse | www.sheffieldvibe.com 47

The wait is over The Ferrari that everybody has been waiting for: say ‘ciao’ to the Ferrari 488 Pista. Why is this the car people have been waiting for? Simple – how it looks and how it drives. The previous generations to this car, the 360 Challenge Stradale, 430 Scuderia and 458 Speciale, were all absolutely fantastic to drive and this new 488 Pista, should be the most ballistic model variant yet. Compared to the 488 GTB, the new model weighs an impressive 90kg less (1280kg dry). Combine this with a horsepower figure of 710hp, increased torque and 20 per cent more downforce, and you’ll have a car which it as comfortable tearing up the Silverstone F1 circuit as it is trundling through Sheffield city centre.

Available with a range of six highly efficient petrol and diesel engine / transmission combinations, covering 130 to 225hp, it will be available in the summer.
Volvo presses the electric switch The Volvo V60 is an iconic car for the Swedish car-maker – the “central point of the Volvo brand” according to the Senior Vice President of Design at Volvo Cars. As Volvo aims to electrify all new cars from 2019, the V60 comes with two plug-in hybrid powertrain options: the new T6 Twin Engine AWD petrol plug-in hybrid that generates a combined 340hp, or the T8 Twin Engine AWD petrol plug-in hybrid that delivers 390hp. As with all Volvo cars, the interior is not only very stylish, but extremely luxurious too. And with all the safety systems on board, the V60 is one of the safest cars on the road. UK prices for the V60 will start at £31,810.
Ford’s living life on the Edge The new Ford Edge SUV makes its European debut in sporty ST-Line form, offering innovative driver assistance technology, new powertrains, and premium comfort specification.
