PULSECONTENTS

EDITOR’S MESSAGE: his month, we’re congratulating one of our sister magazines, Sixer. Celebrating its 21st birthday this year, it’s been at the heart of the S6 region of Sheffield for more than two decades. Of course, we’re not the only ones offering our congratulations. Bradfield Brewery, which has celebrated its tenth anniversary this year, has brewed a special beer to mark the occasion. You can read all about the celebration ale on page 40, and also find out just what has made this local brewery such a success over the last decade. At this time of year thoughts also turn to the younger generation, who will soon be starting a new school year. The back-to-school blues may be a distant memory for most Pulse readers, but we enlisted the help of 15-year-old school girl Molly Pick to remind us of the challenges, pressures and joys that children face at this point in their lives. It’s a great read, and can be found on page 18. We’ve also got a fascinating Looking Back page this month (page 30). Not only did we receive even more memories of Ecclesfield Library, mentioned in our June edition, but we also heard from Linda Sharp, the daughter of Wilfred Gillott, whose shop was featured last month. If you have a story to share, are hosting an event that you’d like us to publicise or have photographs of a recent celebration or event, we’d love to hear from you. Email Stephanie.Burns@regionalmagazine.co.uk or call me on 0114 250 6300 (Monday to Thursday 9am-5.30pm and Friday 9am-4pm). If you have a business and would like to advertise in Pulse, please call Publishing Manager Helen Wragg on 0114 250 6300 or email Helen.Wragg@regionalmagazine.co.uk. You can also follow us on Twitter (@PulseRMC) or read Pulse (and the rest of Regional Magazine Company’s titles) online at www.regionalmagazine.co.uk. Enjoy the sun and we’ll see you next month!

Don’t be quick to judge... head inside SWAG and find yourself a furniture bargain.

I

t’s what’s on the inside that counts…. so before you stroll past SWAG’s unassuming exterior, why not stop for a moment for a look around? They might have that special something to turn your house into the home you desire. At SWAG, the furniture clearance warehouse in Darnall, you won’t find a glamorous showroom. Neither will you find a team of intimidating salesmen in shiny suits. Instead, you’ll find a huge furniture clearance warehouse stacked with mountains of good quality, great value, branded furniture. Owner Dave Perkins and his team have been trading for 15 years and moved to the Darnall warehouse eight years ago, when their growing success meant they were in need of larger premises. The warehouse, which can be best described as a treasure trove, boasts two acres to roam and up to 2,000 pieces of furniture to choose from. There’s something for every customer and every room of your home at SWAG. There’s a variety of pieces on show, including over 100 different beds and bed frames, over 200 sofas, 50 TV stands, 70 dining sets and over 100 ready-made wardrobes. In fact, SWAG has the largest range of furniture in the area. Their stock is

www.regionalmagazine.co.uk

predominantly solid oak wood and factory made, meaning it is much stronger than flat-packed sets. And because all their furniture is already made up and in stock, they specialise in next day deliveries right to your door. Just pay a small deposit and pay in full once your goods are safely delivered. Although SWAG has a website for you to peruse their products, Dave and his team encourage their customers to come and see their fantastic range of one-off pieces for themselves. All their furniture is end-of-season stock from department stores and well-known outlets, so you get highquality products for excellent value for money. SWAG’s stock changes daily, so take advantage of their great offers today. Many customers comment on how delighted they are when they shop around and find the same sofa or piece of furniture that they spied in a high street store at SWAG – only cheaper! Dave’s no frills approach to business means he can pass on great savings to his customers. At SWAG there are no gimmicks, just honest deals. Visit their warehouse Monday to Saturday, 9am to 5pm (with free car parking available) to view their brilliant branded furniture at low prices. Dave and his team look forward to meeting you. PULSEBACK TO SCHOOL

GCSE student Molly Pick describes how the prospect of the new school year is filling her with a mixture of excitement and trepidation. n September I will be entering Year 11 at Lady Manners School, and I am all too aware of the importance of this year. Throughout the year, I will be sitting numerous controlled assessments for my chosen subjects, before sitting final examinations in May. It’s what everything over the last few years has been leading up to. Since I was in primary school, teachers have been drilling into our heads the importance of these examinations, so it can be hard not to feel pressure, especially when it is right around the corner. For anyone who doesn’t know, or has forgotten what it is like to start a new school year, I usually have a wide mix of emotions. There’s the excitement of reuniting with friends that you haven’t seen in months, the sadness of summer being over, and the daunting prospect of starting new classes with new teachers that you haven’t met before. In September, it often seems difficult to look ahead to a time that you are going to finish that year. It just seems like you are going to be there forever. It’s like standing at the foot of a very large mountain; you can’t see the top yet, although you know it’s there, and you know that at some point eventually you will have to reach the summit, but you almost feel like you’ll never be able to reach it. People sometimes call this muddled mess of emotions the back to school blues. When I was a little younger, in years 7 and 8, I used to get really nervous about starting back at school. It felt like I had been away from school and everything to do with school for so long, and that when I got there on the first day, it would be like starting a new school all over again. But it never was. Usually, it would feel slightly different to the year before – academic-wise – as the work would get more challenging and demanding, but I still knew everybody, so it wasn’t like starting completely afresh. Often, if I have something happening the next day that I am nervous or anxious about, I’ll spend hours thinking up all of the possible different outcomes that I can imagine. Then, when I get there, it’s never like any of the outcomes that I originally imagined. I always imagine that when I see friends for the first time in weeks it will be awkward and that we will have nothing to say to each other, but usually it isn’t – I just feel excited to finally be seeing them again. At the beginning of year 10, it felt a lot less like it had done in previous years. It just felt like a continuation of the previous year, like we had never really left, but there was the obvious pressure from many of our teachers as we began our GCSE courses. It is often hard to get back into the routine of things after the summer holiday. I seem to retain things I have learnt much better in some classes than others, so in some classes it feels like a mad panic to try and remember everything that I was taught the previous year. When it was time to choose what options I wanted to take for my GCSEs, I had a lot of difficulty deciding. There were too many things that I wanted to do and, since I didn’t really know what I wanted to do in the future, I just chose subjects that I was enjoying at the time. I did have to sacrifice a few subjects that I really

I

enjoyed, but I think I chose the right ones because, for the most part, I do enjoy school. When we chose our options, it was only half way through year 9 and I felt rather young and inexperienced to be making those kinds of decisions, as GCSEs affect the rest of your life. I have thought about what I might like to do after school, but I keep changing my mind. I would like to pursue a career in either film or publishing because I love books and writing and creating characters and stories. I’m not sure what I want to study at university but I am planning to go. At school there is help available, and there are several websites we have been shown that can help us choose career paths and give detailed information on a wide range of jobs that we are interested in. At the end of year 11, I’m not really leaving school because I plan to return to Lady Manners for sixth form. However, some of my friends are planning to attend other sixth forms, colleges or apprenticeships, so it will be sad to see them leave. I find it quite difficult to imagine finishing year 11 at the moment; I don’t really know what it is going to feel like until it happens, because things like that don’t usually happen exactly the way that you imagine. In year 11, I think you feel more responsible for your learning and homework. You have to make sure that you are learning the information in lessons as you go along. If you do not retain it, when it comes time to revise for tests, you have a lot of information to go over and learn in a seemingly short period of time. My favourite parts of school are being around my friends every day and the various sporting events that we have in the summer. Although, I do really like it in lessons if we are doing a topic I enjoy because it just makes the lesson so much easier if you like what you are doing. Even though there are a lot of good parts to school, there are also some bad ones. I really don’t like the pressure of exams. If it was just a question paper, it wouldn’t be so bad, but I think the pressure that is put on you to do well and achieve your target marks make them much worse and a lot more stressful. Sometimes, when you are in the exam it can be hard to think of answers to questions that you know you know because of the atmosphere and pressures, and then when you walk out of the classroom and think about it, you all of a sudden know the answer to the question, or realise that you answered a question wrong, which can be infuriating. One of my favourite school moments happened just a few weeks ago. I’ve been a member of the athletics team since year 8 and my favourite activities are the 100m sprint and the long jump. Sadly, we’re not allowed to be in the team in year 11 as we’re told it will distract us from our GCSEs, and many of the exams take place during competition season, so we decided to have a group photo after our last tournament. We all clambered onto the high jump mat but none of us could stand up properly and we were all falling over each other. It was a bittersweet moment as we were having so much fun but we knew it would be the last time we were all together as a team. That photo will help me remember all the good times we had together.

PROMOTIONKIP MCGRATH

Proven research shows that Kip McGrath works and can help your children achieve their goals. he Kip McGrath Education Centre in Ecclesfield has been open since January. In that time, it has rapidly built up student numbers. As part of a much larger franchise, it has at its disposal a wide range of resources and expertise built up over many years designed to support children receiving tuition. Kip McGrath tuition is a premium service. It was founded nearly 40 years ago and now has centres in many countries. The UK has 216 centres and is growing rapidly. In June, Kip McGrath were invited to present what they do nationally and globally to the 19th Conference of Commonwealth Education Ministers; a first for any private tuition company. Kip McGrath tuition has been so successful over the years because, in a nutshell, what they do works. They have programmes of study that are founded on proven research. These are regularly reviewed and improved but the fundamentals have stayed the same over 40 years because they work. Kip McGrath employ qualified teachers, often with a great deal of experience in schools. In Ecclesfield, the Kip McGrath Centre is run by David Kaye, a former headteacher with over 25 years’ experience in schools and tuition. Each student has a programme that is unique and can be adapted to meet the exact needs of the student at a moment’s notice. Some people believe that children are best tutored on their own. 40 years of experience tells us that this does not work effectively because students become reliant on the tutor and are unable to transfer their learning back into school. Of course,

none of this works without the commitment and effort of students and their parents. In the year ahead, look out for the development of KipOnline; online tuition with real tutors in real time. PULSEIN BRIEF

Steel men become ironmen

Darren

Jake

There is no stiffer test of physical endurance than an Ironman. The event starts at 6am with a 2.4-mile swim before heading straight into a 112-mile bike ride and finishing with a full 26.2-mile marathon. Last month in Bolton, three men from Ecclesfieldbased gym Fitness Garage represented a perfect triangle of motivation, inspiration and dedication by becoming Ironmen. Nick Pratt is a member and was the first to commit to the race, Darren Woodhead is one of the owners of FG, and Jake Cook is a body mechanic who trains Nick. Following months of Nick intense training, all three successfully completed the course in good times: Nick (12hrs 14mins 45secs), Jake (11hrs 28mins 29secs) and Darren (13hrs 43mins 31secs). Darren and Jake have now committed to the Lanzarote event in May 2016 – they must be mad!

The thrill of the chase A large contingent of over 40 members from Fitness Garage competed in the local road race, Greno Chase, last month. This is part of Fitness Garage’s commitment to the local community and to supporting local events. It was also a chance for members to test themselves and socialise afterwards. The members that ran represented all ages and abilities, with at least three runners over the age of 60. No matter where they finished, everyone had a fantastic night. Silverware was also up for grabs and Fitness Garage came away with first male, second male, first female and the overall winning team.

Vintage vehicles at Wortley Hall The Rotary Club of Wortley held its 18th vintage vehicle rally at Wortley Hall on a warm, sunny afternoon. There were 180 exhibits of vintage cars, tractors and motorcycles and the crowd was treated to an expert model aircraft fly display by the Don Valley Model Flying Club. The prizes were awarded to Mr Sutton (overall winner of best in show with a 1935 Singer Le Mans), Mr Hogg (veteran class (pre 31/12/1905) winner with a 1904 Cadillac) Mr Anderson (vintage and thoroughbred (1919 to 1930 plus thoroughbreds to 1939) winner with a Rolls Royce Phantom 11), Mr Harrison (classic (any other car) winner with an Austin A35 factory pick up), Mr Wyke (motorcycles winner with a Vincent Black Shadow), and Mr Goldthorpe (tractors winner with a Ferguson). The prizes were presented by Sheffield comedian Bobby Knutt and the afternoon raised around £3,500 for charity.

Success for Sheffield Rangers Congratulations to the Sheffield Rangers, who finished second and third in the Dearne Valley and District tournament.

The 2015 Grenoside Gala queen Jasmin Hewerdine has organised a charity jumble sale, with the help of her four attendants. Paws-itive help for your dog

College teams claim European silverware Barnsley College’s Sports Academy has secured a double success at a prestigious international football competition. Teams from the college won both the under-19 male and the female open age categories at the Komm Mit International Whitsuntide Tournament in Barcelona, Spain. The college’s male teams overcame teams from across Europe to meet each other in an allBarnsley final. It took a fantastic second-half goal from George Johnson to separate them and secure victory for Team One in front of over 2,000 people at the Pineda De Mar Stadium. Jack Ripley’s five goals ensured he was the top goalscorer in the male under-19 section of the tournament. The female team retained their grip on the trophy after defeating SV Nollingen of Germany in a penalty shoot-out, with Leah White converting the winning spot kick. The success cemented a second successive double for the female team, who have won both the Association of Colleges (AoC) Yorkshire and Humber League and the Komm Mitt tournament in the past two years.

PULSELOOKING BACK Words: Stephanie Burns

WHO’S ON PARADE? Picture captures a scene from Edwardian Ecclesfield. igel Womersley of Mill Road in Ecclesfield emailed us this old family postcard from 19 June 1909. The picture shows an Ecclesfield Hospital Parade entry outside the house named Germanic Mount, at the side of an entrance to Ecclesfield Park (opposite Morrisons). Nigel’s maternal grandfather, Amos Fisher, is the man on the extreme right of the photograph, who is pointing at the camera. Do you recognise anyone else in the picture? If so, please get in touch with editor Stephanie Burns on 0114 250 6300 or email Stephanie.Burns@ regionalmagazine.co.uk and we will print your comments in the next issue. We would also like to receive your old pictures for Looking Back. If you have any that you would like to share, please send them, along with your name and a short description of the photograph, to Pulse Looking Back, 6 Broadfield Court, Broadfield Business Park, Sheffield S8 0XF. Five bob for Peggy the dog… Graham Hartley of Church Street in Ecclesfield called to share his memories of the Looking Back picture from our June issue. He recognised Arthur Bull (or little Mr Bull as he was known) with his dog Peggy. “One of Mr Bull’s tricks was to sell Peggy for five shillings in the pub on a Sunday night,” he said. “He could guarantee she would be back with him by the end of the next week!” Graham also remembered how the librarian Mrs Spittlehouse would ask to see your hands to check they were clean before you were allowed to select a book.

This photo could have been taken when my mum was walking to school to collect me or my sister.” Linda Sharp, the daughter of Wilfred and Rose Gillott who owned and ran the shop – which was one of the first of its kind – also got in touch. She said: “Dad came from a well known Ecclesfield family who lived as caretakers at the historic Feoffees Hall (also known as the Council Hall) on Yew Lane until the 1950s when it was demolished to make way for the British Legion Club. We then moved to Chapeltown. “Dad ran the shop with family help from the 50s until the 70s, when the site was compulsorily purchased to make way for a road. No road as yet. Dad went back to his trade as a builder until he retired in 1981. Sadly he died in 1990, but mum (aged 96) still has the house in Chapeltown. “My sister Ann emigrated to Australia with her family in 1968, and my brother Chris lives in New Zealand, so that may be where the idea that we had all emigrated came from. I emigrated to Barnsley. “Incidentally, I too can remember Miss Spittlehouse of the library in Ecclesfield. In those long-ago pre-TV days, Ann and I read avidly and were often in the library or next door in the sweet shop.”

PULSECELEBRATION

‘KEY TO THE DOOR’

Celebration ABV 4.5%

“Key to the door ”

SIXER MAGAZ

INE

What better way to mark the 21st anniversary of our sister magazine Sixer than with a commemorative beer, produced specially by Bradfield Brewery. Stephanie Burns reports on our ‘Celebration Ale’. n September 2006, the good folk at Bradfield Brewery made us our very own beer. The introduction of Farmers Sixer was a landmark moment for Pulse’s sister magazine and it soon became a well-respected addition to Sheffield’s beer collection. Nine years on, we’re delighted to have partnered up with the brewery once again for the launch of Celebration Ale, which has been especially brewed for our 21st birthday. The light-coloured summery ale of around 4.5% will be exclusively available in S6 pubs – including the brewery’s very own Nag’s Head – from early August. “It’s nice to be a part of Sixer’s birthday and it’s our tenth anniversary this year too so it’s a real year of celebration,” says brewery owner John Gill. “We’ve followed the magazine since the beginning and always looked forward to getting it. And we’ve been advertising the brewery in the magazine since we opened.” The Gills – made up of John, his wife Susan, their daughter Lisa and son Richard – are a dairy farming family by trade and Watt House Farm, nestled in the rolling hills of High Bradfield, has been in Susan’s family since her grandad took over the tenancy in 1944. All was well until the price of milk plummeted at the turn of the millennium and, struggling to make ends meet, they were forced to diversify. It was Richard who came up with the idea of producing their own beer and, in March 2004, work began on transforming the cow shed into a brewery. Experienced head brewer Paul Ward, who is still with them today, was employed to oversee the process and the first batch was finished on 26 April 2005. Since then the brewery has produced a whole host of awardwinning beers and now distributes to pubs and shops all over the UK. The most well decorated of them all is Farmers Brown Cow 4.2%. Most recently scooping bronze in the best bitter category of the 2015 Rotherham CAMRA Beer of Yorkshire Awards, this rich chestnut-coloured ale has a creamy head, a citrus aftertaste and a long, dry finish. Joining Farmers Brown Cow in the permanent range is Farmers Blonde 4%, Farmers Pale Ale 5% (which won gold in Rotherham’s strong bitter category), Farmers Stout 4.5%, Farmers Bitter 3.9% and

I

Yorkshire Farmer 4%. All of these, and Farmers Sixer, are also available by the bottle and mini-keg. Originally a limited edition, Farmers Sixer was officially launched at the Sheffield Beer Festival in September 2006 and proved so popular – particularly in bottles – that it’s been kept on ever since. A true Indian Pale Ale (IPA), it’s brewed strong at six per cent (see what we did there) and delivers a fruity, refreshing finish. While we’d like to say that the creation of Farmers Sixer and Celebration Ale is a unique concept for the brewery, in reality the Gills need no excuse to come up with something new and there are plenty of seasonal brews available throughout the year. If you’re expecting a more detailed description of Celebration Ale’s taste, however, we’re afraid you’ll be left wanting.“The only way to really tell if you’ll like something is to taste it,” says John. “I’m not one for tasting notes – you either like it or you don’t. What I will say is that the simpler something is, the better it sells.” True to form, Celebration Ale isn’t the only special ale the Gills have produced this summer. Blueberry, a slightly weaker version of the hugely popular Christmas ale Belgian Blue, is being brewed with sunny summer days in mind. This refreshing malty session ale of 4.4% has fruity, spicy overtones and of course the well-loved blue tint to the head. These special editions are partly possible because the brewing process is actually less arduous than you might think. “You can brew a beer on a Monday and sell it the next week,” explains John. “It takes three or four days to ferment in a conditioning tank then it’s ready to put into bottles or kegs. Beer wants selling fresh, though. It’s not like wine – it doesn’t get better the longer you leave it.” The simple yet effective approach carries throughout the company. Fresh spring water is extracted from the farm’s own borehole, which was drilled especially for the brewery’s launch in 2005. Along with carefully selected malts and traditional hops, they believe this contributes greatly to the taste. The former farmers clearly knew what they were doing when they decided to diversify away from milk towards beer – and we’re certain that, like the rest of their tasty brews, Celebration Ale will be a storming success.

PROMOTIONCOLLECTIVE LEGAL SOLUTIONS

Safeguarding your assets – which Trust is right for you? Trusts aren’t just for the rich and famous… Often associated with comedians, pop stars and politicians attempting to shelter their money from the tax man, Trusts sometimes get a bad name. It is a little known fact that Trusts have been used for hundreds of years – they date right back to when wealthy land owners began gifting their land to a friend or relative to look after, whilst they went to fight in the Crusades. A Trust is like a safety deposit box – you can place your valuables in it (such as your home, savings and some investments) and it will protect them from a number of threats. It can also provide flexibility over how and when they are passed on to future generations. Trusts to protect your home and savings Trusts are commonly used to protect assets for loved ones. The Care Act 2014 introduced new rules, but many people will still have to fund their care in later life from their savings and the value of their home. With the right advice, using a trust can protect your home and savings from the high costs of care, allowing you to pass what you’ve worked hard for to your children and grandchildren. Disabled beneficiary Trusts A Trust can be used to provide for a disabled child (or other beneficiary) who is either unable to manage their own affairs, or is an unsuitable recipient of a lump sum inheritance due to its impact on their means-tested benefits. Leaving an inheritance to a beneficiary in receipt of means-tested benefits can mean those benefits stop, and the inheritance you have provided acts as a replacement rather than a fund to provide some of the luxuries you want your beneficiary to enjoy. Leaving the inheritance outright to another individual with the hope they will use it to benefit your disabled child carries with it some inherent risks – most notably if that individual suffers financial or marital difficulties. Using a Trust avoids these problems. Children and Grandchildren Trusts For those who wish to provide an inheritance to their children and grandchildren, but are concerned about how that inheritance might be spent or the effect of their intended beneficiaries suffering marital or financial difficulties, a Trust is a valuable estate planning tool. Holding an inheritance until your chosen beneficiaries meet certain criteria set by you, a Trust can ensure the wealth you’ve worked hard to pass on is used in the way you intended – for house deposits or university fees perhaps. A Trust can ensure your children and grandchildren don’t inherit until they reach a certain age, or that they can only use the inheritance for certain things. What next? Using the right Trust for your personal circumstances and objectives is vital, so taking advice from a specialist is an important first step. Request free information by calling Collective Legal Solutions on 0114 288 1104.

You need to take advice if… • You or your spouse/partner don’t yet have a Will. • You have a Will but it leaves everything to your spouse/partner. • You don’t have both kinds of Lasting Powers of Attorney set up. • You or your spouse/partner don’t have a pre-paid Funeral Plan. • You are divorced or widowed. • You have children. • You are concerned about what will happen and covering the costs if you need long term residential care.

PROMOTIONTANKERSLEY PARK GOLF CLUB

With its new facilities and beautifully manicured course, Tankersley Park Golf Club is the ideal place to enjoy the game. ave you ever considered joining a golf club? If so, now is the perfect time. With a fantastic location and superb course, Tankersley Park Golf Club (TPGC) has much to entice golfers for the 2015 season – including memberships with no upfront joining fee. All are welcome at TPGC – including beginners, juniors, ladies, gentlemen, pay-as-you-play, societies and corporate groups – and flexible memberships are available. Contact the secretary for more details. The construction of a new practice facility will commence in the next few weeks and will hopefully be up and running for the autumn. This facility will be open to all – the general public, as well as members – and will be a welcome addition to the area for all budding golfers to practise during the dark winter months. The land has a fascinating past, with many uses over the last few centuries. It was an oak forest, a civil war battlefield, a baronial deer park, a coal and ironstone mining area and even a battle tank testing ground before being transformed into a beautifully manicured golf course. Today, the modern, well-equipped clubhouse is the host of many social events and dinner dances throughout the year and boasts spectacular views over the surrounding

Turning over a new leaf Alfa Romeo has unveiled a serious contender to the BMW 3-Series, Audi A4 and Mercedes-Benz C-Class – and boy does it look good. The Giulia, the long-awaited successor to the 159, is dripping with Italian style and elegance but has lots more to make you sit up and take note. For a start, it’s rear-wheel drive (all-wheel drive will also be available) with perfect 50/50 weight distribution; a strong indication that it will drive as good as it looks. This is aided by the use of carbon fibre, aluminium and plastic, giving the car an extraordinary weight-to-power ratio. The Giulia will launch in 2016 with the flagship Quadrifoglio version, a 510hp behemoth which utilises a state-of-the-art six cylinder turbo petrol engine with Ferrari-inspired technologies. The queue starts here.

Some old favourites get a new lease of life while Alfa Romeo unveil their latest superstar, writes Richard Abbey. Dynamic Benz

A new class of MINI Although larger than its predecessor, the biggest changes to the new MINI Clubman have been made under the bonnet with the introduction of new TwinPower Turbo Technology engines. Three units will be available from launch, the MINI Cooper Clubman, the MINI Cooper D Clubman and the MINI Cooper S Clubman, with prices starting from £19,995. A choice of two petrol engines with three or four cylinders will be offered alongside a four-cylinder diesel. Six-speed manual transmissions will be offered as standard although a new eight-speed Steptronic transmission will be available as an option on the MINI Cooper D and MINI Cooper S Clubman. All cars will come with MINI’s highly acclaimed Navigation System as standard, exemplifying the high levels of equipment across the range.

Mercedes-Benz’s change of direction for it’s A-Class proved to be a gamble worth taking – and now they’ve unveiled a new version of the sporty hatchback. Lookswise you’ll be hard pushed to notice any difference; it’s inside where the changes have been made. The biggest improvement is perhaps the introduction of DYNAMIC SELECT, which allows the driver to change the car’s characteristics at the touch of a button. The engine, transmission, suspension, steering and air conditioning are all tuned to fit with one of the selected driving modes – Comfort, Sport, Eco and Individual. There’ll be four petrol engines and four diesel engines, the latter of which includes a new 109hp A180 d with CO2 emissions of just 89g/km. If performance is more your thing, there’ll also be a 381hp MercedesAMG A45 4MATIC – the world’s most powerful compact sports model.

Brand icon The Mazda MX-5 has long been considered one of the best – if not the best – value-formoney roadsters on the market. And now it just got even better. The all-new model, characterised by rearwheel drive, perfect 50/50 weight distribution and more comfort and technology than ever before, was launched at the recent Goodwood Festival of Speed. It’s shorter, lower and wider than its predecessor as well as lighter. Two SKY ACTIV-G petrol engines – a 1.5-litre 131ps and 2.0-litre 160ps – will be available along with five trim levels. All models feature LED headlights, alloy wheels and a six-speed manual gearbox. Jeremy Thomson, Mazda Motors UK managing director, said: “The MX-5 is Mazda’s brand icon and it embodies all that is great about our products. Its fun to drive character has strengthened the bond between Mazda and its customers for 25 years.” The new MX-5 will continue to offer value for money, with prices ranging from £18,495 to £23,295.
