Celebrating
50 YEARS IN BUSINESS At the Heating Installer Awards 2018 – We won the 2018 Heating Installer of the year for Yorkshire & the North East
Our engineer, Craig, performing a Power Flush at a local property Our working showroom in Hoyland S74 9LH
We are proud to support local causes. This is the Ecclesfield Red Rose JFC team that we sponsor
It was a year that changed history, 1968 was a year of seismic social and political change across the globe. It was also the year that a plumber from Sheffield decided to make a go of it himself. And so Bumford Heating was born. Chris Bumford started the business, from humble beginnings in their spare bedroom in Wincobank. He installed his first boiler that same year, and never looked back. Now run by Chris’ son Neil, the company goes from strength to strength in its fiftieth year.
Amadou, our French apprentice working at a local property
“We are incredibly proud of this milestone” says Neil. “It can be difficult to know which company to trust in your home. I think the reason Bumfords is still here is that we value honesty and integrity, and we get the job done at a fair price. And now with over 50 years of recommendations under our belt, people see us as a trustworthy family firm.” Whether you are looking for a new boiler, heating system upgrade, new controls, plumbing or bathroom work, repairs or servicing - why not contact one of the friendly team at Bumfords.

THINK PRINTS, PALM TREES AND PINEAPPLES... THIS SUMMER’S HOME TRENDS TAKE ON A CARIBBEAN TWIST. BY LUCY HAINSWORTH. his summer’s trend consists of ornaments bursting with botanical bliss and pineapple prints, to give this season’s home a tropical twist. You’ll find plenty of palm tree and banana leaf clad homeware on the high streets right now, which are sure to give any garden party a holiday vibe. Leaf prints add a touch of nature to artificial features in the home, with lampshades and bedding making you feel like you’ve woken up in the great outdoors. You may even find birds of
T
paradise sneaking their way into homeware, with tables and chairs growing bird’s legs. The pineapples add to this tropical sensation and are usually coupled with fierce gold to give this theme a sophisticated yet playful look. Metallics are always a winner, so reinforce these with some silver of gold wall hangings. With décor like this, your house will certainly stand out from the crowd and make your summer feel a lot more vibrant and stylish whether you’re inside your home and out in the garden.

ALLOTMENTS
Morley Street allotments
‘Everything tastes better when it’s home-grown’ EVER THOUGHT OF GROWING YOUR OWN? AN ALLOTMENT IS A GREAT WAY TO ENJOY THE FRUITS OF YOUR HARD LABOUR – AND TO LEARN NEW SKILLS. AS PART OF NATIONAL ALLOTMENT MONTH, HANNAH SANDERS VISITS TWO COMMUNITY-RUN SCHEMES. llotments provide the perfect escape from the outside world, where you can while the day around socialising with friends, get your hands dirty in the earth, experiment with planting new varieties and reap the rewards of your hard-earned produce. Taking a stroll on a beautiful sunny morning with John Newman and Brian Legge – residents at Morley Street Allotments, in Walkley – I was in awe at the towering runner beans, bundles of courgettes and tomatoes, blooming flowers along with a selection of gooseberries, loganberries and tayberries. “I’ve had my allotment now for 12 years. When I first started I was a bit apprehensive because I had problems with vandals but now, reflecting on my time here, I’m really glad I’ve got it and my grandchildren love coming down and spending the day,” said Brian Legge.

“When you retire, it isn’t easy knowing what to do with yourself and having an allotment helps fill that void. It’s been brilliant for me, and I like knowing that the work I am doing is putting something back into the environment. The work is endless but rewarding and when you see the blue tits coming out of your bird boxes, or gather your first crop it makes all the hard graft worthwhile.” John Newman added: “Having an allotment is a John Newman great opportunity to learn a new skill. Both Brian and I like gardening but we also like to have a project on the go. We’ve both built Brian Legge greenhouses and Brian has not only built @PulseRMC

sheds and a chicken run but also a community greenhouse where we can sell plants at our annual sales.” “Everything tastes better when it’s home-grown, and yes, you have to put in the time and effort to maintain your allotment, but it’s all worth it in the end – take it from someone who has one.” Morley Street Allotments are part of the Walkley Bank Allotment Society, and with their on-site shop, plant sales and newly-built greenhouse have a strong presence in the community. “What’s really exciting is the council have given us an extra bit of land which we have built the greenhouse on, and we’re planning to further develop this for the community – so we would just like to say thank you to
TIPS TO GET YOU STARTED: • Do things little and often • Dig the ground with a spade to make it level • Make beds • Plant as you go • Try growing soft fruit first • Utilise the community’s knowledge • Don’t be afraid to ask for help • Don’t be afraid to try new things What to grow: • Courgettes • Carrots • Potatoes • Runner beans • Soft fruit • Seasonal flowers Livestock allowed: • Six chickens • Two rabbits
them,” said John. “Our site also has a few community plots, which is fantastic as everyone comes down on a set day and works together on the land.” Sheffield City Council manages over 3,000 allotments over 70 sites, and are looked after by the Sheffield Allotment Federation president Michael Jordan and the committee, who also own allotments within Sheffield. Based at Moss Way Allotment, Michael has been the president for two years representing both private and council owned allotments with aims to help plot holders and potential allotmenteers enjoy and make good use of plots and the produce grown. “We want to work together to make not only Moss Way a thriving community but others within Sheffield, and help fuel environments where people help one another,” said Michael. “At Moss Way, there’s a group of eight of us including Bev and Michael Booth, Doreen Skipper, Stacey Grococ, who’s the groundsman, and his wife Claire who work to maintain the site itself. We mow the grass, trim hedges and work on community projects like the orchard, shop and soon to be functioning compostable toilet.” Michael Booth is also on the federation and with his wife has recently extended his plot size. “The second plot took us nine months to transform but that was with two of us, usually with one @PulseRMC
person it can take between two to three years. The thing to remember is not to give up. Gardening is hardwork and everything is against you but there is nothing finer than getting the first crops of the season,” said Michael Booth. Wife Bev Booth added: “Remember when you have an allotment, you are never wrong in what you do. Some of it is trial and error. All you need to do is keep going and once you have some fruit and veg you’ll be immensely proud of yourself, and will have fallen in love with it.” Waiting times vary when it comes to allotments, and depend on where you are based. If you want an allotment put an application in and you can visit www.sheffield.gov.uk to see a full list of vacancies, prices and concessions along with getting some do’s and don’ts from The Allotment Handbook. John Newman added: “If anyone is wanting an allotment, or is on the waiting list for one then please come down to Morley Street and have a chat with us about what it’s like. “And, if people are interested and there aren’t any plots available then there is the opportunity to share or split a plot with someone – a full plot if a lot of work so if you can share and work together that’s fantastic.” For more information on the federation visit www.sa-federation.co.uk or Morley Street Allotments visit www.sheffieldenvironment.org.To apply for an allotment visit www.sheffieldgov.co.uk. Local companies ‘fork out’ for Wentworth Woodhouse wishlist Generous South Yorkshire companies are being urged to ‘fork out’ for a Wentworth Woodhouse ‘wishlist’. The CEO of the preservation trust restoring the Rotherham stately home to its former glory is appealing to businesses to upcycle or donate desperately needed items. “We have a long list of equipment which would help us greatly, but its early days for us and we can’t afford the vital pieces we urgently need,” said Sarah McLeod of WWPT. “We’re not proud – we will gladly take second-hand donated items. We suspect many of the things on our wishlist could be lying redundant at a builder’s or engineering firm and promise we will put them to great use.” Top of the wishlist is a second hand Kubota mini cart, or a redundant golf buggy, which could be used to transport elderly
Catering students cook for the Prime Minster Barnsley College Catering students Molly Porter, Chloe Cook and Kiera Brammah have gained valuable catering experience at the annual Farnborough International Air Show. Under the supervision of the College’s Catering and Hospitality Course Leader, Martyn Hollingsworth and tutor James Key, the students helped produce and dispatch dishes which catered for more than 800 people, including the Prime Minister, Theresa May. Molly Porter, 19, from Wath-uponDearne, said: “The opportunity was a once-ina-lifetime moment that I will never forget. To say I have cooked for the Prime Minister is an incredible honour. I have learnt so much from inspirational catering professionals and was able to apply the cookery skills I gained within my course.” For more information on Barnsley College’s Catering and Hospitality courses, call 01226 216123, email info@barnsley.ac.uk or visit www.barnsley.ac.uk
visitors around the grounds and enable staff to ferry equipment needed at outdoor events. Currently, the only way is for a ‘chain gang’ of staff to pass items down the line. Also on the list is a fork lift truck, and a portable building is needed for the volunteers
who are working hard to develop the gardens. Currently there is nowhere in the grounds for them to wash their hands, eat their lunch and take shelter in bad weather. A crowd barrier is required to keep visitors safe and protect heritage features at major events and a set of semi-permanent toilets are required for visitors at outdoor events. This summer’s open air events include Chapterhouse Theatre Company’s production of Sense and Sensibility on 30 August, a screening of The Greatest Showman on 24 and 26 August and Dirty Dancing on Saturday 25 August. For more information go to www.wentworthwoodhouse.org.uk. Companies willing to donate or help fund an item on the wishlist should contact Sarah McLeod on 01226 351161 or Sarah@wentworthwoodhouse.org.uk.

hey sat in the flickering candlelight, head in hands, studying their patient whose breathing laboured, hovering between life and death. They applied poultices, offered draughts of whisky and raw egg; sometimes Mother Nature cured the patient, sometimes she did not. The tough ones survived despite whatever the doctor could do. The poor ones could not afford the doctor in any case, so had even less chance of pulling through. I was fortunate to join the NHS in 1981, when I qualified from Sheffield Medical School, and I have witnessed first hand the plethora of changes taking place along my timeline, and continue to do so. Before the birth of the National Health Service, such was the life of the doctor who worked tirelessly, without break or respite, meeting face-to-face the raw illness which beset his patients but with little he could do about it. TB, cholera, smallpox, all took their toll in those early days. Then there came the beams of light which shone through the despair. Edward Jenner (1796) made his observations of milkmaids who contracted cowpox, which protected against the related smallpox – hence his development of the vital smallpox vaccine. Joseph Lister developed the antiseptic carbolic acid (now known as phenol) to sterilise surgical instruments and to clean wounds. This saved women after childbirth and patients having operations from the consequences of infections. The first penicillin antibiotic, which started development in Sheffield with Howard Florey in the 1930s, saved many a young soldier in WW2 from death from the consequences of trench gangrene. These gems were set in a background of socio-political developments such as increasing employment and improved housing, itself vitally underpinned by safe sanitation. The Victorians gained an understanding that health flowed from a clean water supply to the population, made so by the dirty water being kept separate from it. Middens were replaced by flushing toilets, thanks to the tireless work of Thomas Crapper of London, and a proper sewerage system as developed by Joseph Bazalgette (1858). However, after two World Wars the deprivation and difficulty took their toll on the people, and they suffered many infections

such as pneumonia and TB, scarlet fever and influenza. Increasing poverty meant increasing diseases, especially in the very young and the very old. Aneurin Bevan, Minister for Health in the UK from 1945-51, had been involved in a medical ‘insurance’ system for employees of a small Welsh mining town, and along with William Beveridge’s welfare proposals of 1942, developed the idea of a national health service, free at the point of delivery. ‘Nye’ Bevan’s quote referring to the NHS is well known: “Illness is neither an indulgence for which people have to pay, nor an offence for which they should be penalised, but a misfortune, the cost of which should be shared by the community.” On 5 July 1948, the birth of a National Health Service was announced with flourish and ceremony and received with great joy and relief by the people, in a time of post-war hardship. Bevan saw health as a basic human right and paid for through taxation. The concept of the ‘General Practitioner’ was born in the mid-1960s with a specific contract – a doctor who had previously worked alone or in small groups, now had the benefit of a team as they took on vital staff such as receptionists and nurses. GPs were
“The doctor no longer is the father figure providing water-tight answers to all questions, but rather a point of information and advice.” paid for delivering specific services such as contraception, baby checks and diabetes care. The doctor’s role changed bit by bit over this time. ‘He’ was partially replaced by ‘she’ as more women were accepted for medical training (currently more than half of medical students are women in Sheffield for example), working less than full time in many cases. The GP would have modern guidance to follow, based on evidence provided by the National Institute of Clinical Excellence (NICE) from 1999. After qualifying as a doctor I had three years’ of GP training to complete, part of it in Barnsley District Hospital. I remember being called out one night in 1984 with the obstetric ‘flying squad’ to deliver a premature baby as an emergency at home, and our ambulance was held up by miners’ strikers. The ambulance was rocked about and stones thrown at the windows. Fortunately the baby survived. At the time I started out as a GP, 1 August 1985, at Walkley House Medical Centre, we had an excellent team of receptionists, nurses of different types, as well as five GPs. We have developed over this time, and won the Practice of the Year Award in November 2017 @PulseRMC

for teamwork. A few of those early staff still work with us, and the team has developed new skills as NHS changes demand. The doctor now looks upon the patient, the person in front of them, as a partner in the decision-making; that person often having consulted ‘Google’ first and possibly having his own fears and questions which need to be put in context. The doctor no longer is the father figure providing water-tight answers to all questions, but rather a point of information and advice, delivered on an individual basis for that specific person’s problems. Can this NHS be sustained in the face of increasingly sophisticated and expensive treatments and medical complexity as we all live longer? Now, almost half of people aged over 65 take five or more different drugs. There is evidence to show that people with several medical conditions are best served by a GP or practice of GPs who know them well and their team offers their different skills to support that person to maintain independence. The NHS needs to be able to sustain this type of care. I think the future of the NHS holds an increasing use of technology, more sophisticated treatments and drugs, further increases in preventive care and more of the services being delivered near the patient rather than in hospitals. However, it must not lose the patient-centredness of the early days, and care of the person. Dr Jenny Stephenson is a GP at Stannington Medical Centre, Sheffield 6. Aisha, who works as an adult nurse in the A&E department of Northern General Hospital, is one of a team of newly-qualified student nurses and allied health professionals from across the country who have been recruited as ambassadors. They will spread the word about their professions, talk about their experiences and provide first-hand advice to those thinking about doing a nursing or AHP degree. The campaign, spearheaded by Health Education England, aims to encourage more students to study for degrees in nursing and the allied health professions. It will look to increase applications through clearing 2018 and ahead of the UCAS applications deadline in January 2019. Aisha said: “I’m really proud to have been chosen as an ambassador for this exciting new campaign. CHERIE LAWRENCE’S STORY Cherie became a mental health nurse after suffering post-natal depression as a teenager. Her career took off from there, and she isn't looking back. She has just started working at Sheffield’s Northern General Hospital. What made you decide to become a mental health nurse? “I became a mother unexpectedly at 17 and suffered from post-natal depression both during and after my pregnancy. Unfortunately at the time there wasn’t really that much information out there, and neither my family nor I really understood the condition. My doctor couldn’t offer much help, either. “To try and understand it better I did a community mental health course and discovered a passion for the subject. I found it really fascinating. “At school, like many teenagers, I didn’t really know what I wanted to do, but I had from quite a young age always admired nurses - after all, we trust our lives with them, and they’re the backbone of the NHS. “So when I discovered a passion for the subject of mental health, becoming a mental health nurse seemed like the obvious thing to do. I also felt like becoming a mental health nurse would help me be a really positive role model for my daughter.”
‘I’m really proud to have been chosen as an ambassador for this exciting new campaign. It’s vital that we inspire more young people who are choosing their future career paths to study these degrees and educate them on the huge range of opportunities that careers in nursing offer.’
opportunities that careers in nursing offer. “Not only does studying nursing make you highly employable, but in fact, I was offered a job before I’d even finished my degree, and it’s a hugely rewarding career. “As a nurse working in A&E, I get to make a real difference to people’s lives every day.” The campaign, which launched at the end of May and will run primarily across digital platforms, will put the spotlight on the benefits of these degrees and resulting careers, including a social purpose and the chance to make a difference to people’s lives, high graduate employment (94 per cent of graduate nurses find employment in a nursing job within six months of finishing their degree), the opportunity to work anywhere in the UK, and career development opportunities such as teaching, research and team leadership. For more information, visit: www.healthcareers.nhs.uk/knowaboutnursing
How did you become a mental health nurse? “I studied for my degree in mental health nursing at university, and was actually the first person in my family to go to university, which was a little scary, but I needn’t have worried as there’s so much support out there for nursing students. “I really enjoyed my degree and particularly the variety of placements I was given. I was able to get really valuable experience of working in hospital and community settings, with young people and old, including placements in forensics and working with people with functional dementia. “Nurses - particularly mental health nurses - are really in demand, so I was contacted about job opportunities all the way through my degree, and was offered a choice of four jobs when I graduated.”
“Being a nurse means that unlike quite a lot of other professions, you have a guaranteed job for life, which means I’m never going to have to worry about getting a job and providing for my daughter. “I think some people worry about the responsibility they’ll have once they’re doing the job for real, but the NHS runs an amazing preceptorship programme which helps bridge the gap between being a student nurse and a qualified nurse. They make sure you’re really supported, with regular group meetings and one to ones where you can discuss anything you need, and they make sure you have access to further training, such as safeguarding.” What is a typical working day like for you? “I get to work with a variety of people and importantly, no two days are the same. I go to work each day never knowing what to expect, which keeps things really interesting. “I work with a range of patients on the ward, some of whom are very vulnerable, and I work as part of a multi-disciplinary team, who are really supportive of each other. I think some people have a view that mental health nursing must be really tough, and whilst there are challenging times, there are also lots of lovely things that we get to do with patients as well, on a one-to-one basis, like taking them out for a walk or shopping in town. This helps give them back some normality and experience of life outside the ward.” What has been the highlight of your career so far? “I love my job, so it’s difficult to know where to start. I love the variety and how rewarding it is to see the difference we make to the lives of our patients. I also love that I have a guaranteed job for life - a lot of my friends are jealous.” What's next and what are your top tips for anyone thinking of a similar career? “I’ll be becoming a mentor in the next six months and hope to complete a masters in the next three years. I think it’s really important for students to understand how much support and help there is out there for newly qualified nurses, how varied the job is, and the opportunities that are out there for developing your career in the direction you want to, while continuing to learn new skills.” @PulseRMC

of fantastic sandy beaches, traditional towns, hillsides and parks to explore. Is it any wonder that it has become a firm favourite with so many British holiday-makers? Visitors can wander through Palma’s gothic quarter and wonder at its cathedral. Laze on golden sandy beaches or delight in the Tramuntana Mountains. Luxuriate in charming manor houses or relax in a sophisticated boutique hotel. For romance or fun, action-packed or lazy days, there’s something to suit everyone in Mallorca. The Balearic Islands comprise of Mallorca, Menorca, Ibiza and Formentera, with Mallorca the largest, the most popular, and the best known of these delightful islands. Mallorca is often likened to a continent rather than simply an island due to its variety in culture, history and natural landscapes and it is not surprising that the sheer beauty of the island captivates everyone who visits it. No other European island boasts more contrasting terrain, from the fertile plains of the centre to the almost alpine peaks of the Tramuntana Mountains in the northwest and across to the gentle hills of the Levante to the east. The island’s 500km of coastline offers a @PulseRMC
succession of lovely coves, beautiful sandy beaches and secluded bays with some extraordinary caves to explore: notably the Caves del Drac near Porto Cristo. And together with a mild climate and a rich cultural history, it really does provide a delightful holiday destination. The highest peak in visitors is within the summer months, but there is in fact plenty to see and do all year round. Although if you are looking for a beach holiday, May to October will be the best time to visit. Temperatures during the winter months are usually quite mild and remain in double figures. For those who are looking to explore Mallorca’s cultural and historic sights, the winter season is perfect as there are fewer tourists. The city of Palma is a popular choice for city and short breaks with such a great choice of shops, restaurants, museums and galleries. Mallorca has something to suit all tastes: from designer shopping in Palma to haggling for leather souvenirs at the Inca market, from water parks to theme parks, from sailing trips to cruises and exclusive restaurants to tapas bars and evening entertainment shows.

THINGS TO DO: Amaze’n Laberintos
Palma de Mallorca International Boat Show
The maze at Playa de Muro is one of the largest in Europe, stretching for nearly 1.4km on the beach beneath the pines. It’s a great idea for family things to do in Mallorca with its water dragons, monsters, witches, clowns and magicians lurking around hidden corners. There are baffling puzzles and riddles to help or hinder your progress. Open daily.
A floating exhibition displaying more than 300 boats ranging from 6m to 35m in length, the International Boat Show is hosted in the Moll Vell port area of Palma during the last few days of April and first few of days of May. The show focuses on recreational sailing and the best of sailing as a sport. Inca Market
A fascinating network of caverns, the Arta Caves, on Mallorca’s east coast at Cap Vermell, are nearly 50 metres above the sea. The cave chambers rejoice in names such as Hell, Purgatory and Paradise. The 22m tall stalagmite known as Queen of the Pillars is the highlight. Open daily it is a great attraction to visit when looking for things to do in Majorca.
Held on a Thursday, Inca’s weekly market is one of the best ways to get a feel for the real Mallorca. Although holidaymakers do visit in large numbers, the vast majority of customers are Mallorcans keen to track down a bargain as almost everything is sold there. The leatherwork is particularly good and high quality handbags, sandals and baskets are available. It is a great place for shopping and gifts.
Palma Aquarium
Old Town Alcudia
Exhibiting an exceptional variety of flora and fauna of the Mediterranean Sea, Palma Aquarium boasts a very large array of species, including fish from the Australian coral reef and sharks amongst the 55 different aquariums. The aquarium is another great attraction for adults and children alike when looking for alternative things to do in Mallorca, away from the beach. The aquarium is open daily.
Located in the north-eastern area of Mallorca is Alcudia’s old town. The town is surrounded by a moat and walls which were built over the 13th and 14th centuries by order of King Jaume II in order to protect its inhabitants. Now, the walls are an artistic historical site and are protected from further damage since part of the wall collapsed. Although the town has limited shops, there are cafés and restaurants serving traditional tapas and wine.
Arta Caves
There are also historical aspects about the town that are ready to be explored such as the roman theatre. A market runs on Tuesdays and Sundays 8.30am-1.30pm. Catamaran
Exploring Mallorca on land is fantastic, however, if you fancy something a bit different, why not explore the surrounding seas with a catamaran day trip, a great way to view Mallorca from another perspective. Offering a memorable experience with food, music and beverages, the charges are approximately 50 euros per person and 25 euros per child. Private hire is also available with prices varying between the different seasons. Cycle routes
The island has some spectacular cycle routes to please all sorts of abilities. Dramatically stunning views over cliff tops accompany your ride as you make your way to the most north easterly point of the island, Cap de Formentor. At the tip is the Formentor lighthouse, when you can take some refreshment and gaze over the stunning views which make the task of cycling up those winding roads well worth it.

HILLSBOROUGH PARK HAS LONG BEEN A HIVE OF ACTIVITY, AS PHOEBE SEYMOUR DISCOVERS.
s Tramlines celebrates its tenth year and its first successful year at Hillsborough Park, Pulse looks back at the other fantastic community events that have taken place here over the past hundred years. Plus – this month, we say a happy 126th anniversary to the park itself. Always an inspiring location for music, the first photo depicts the bandstand preparing for a concert. This photo featured on a postcard, sent in 1909. The accompanying text for this photo reads: “The park originally formed part of the estate of Hillsborough Hall, which can be seen in the distance. In 1890 Sheffield Corporation bought 50 acres, which at that time, lay outside the boundary in the parish of Ecclesfield, from the trustees of the late J. Willis Dixon for £15,000. After improvements had been carried out, the park opened on 8 August 1892.” Later in 1901, the boundary extensions
A
brought the park and surrounding districts into the city, and it was proposed that the hall be made into a library. In 1906, two rooms were opened as a branch library, and this is where Hillsborough Library still stands to this day. Moving on to our second photo, we see a row of machinery exhibited at the 66th Great Yorkshire Show at Hillsborough Park, taken in August 1903. And as the accompanying text explains, it’s not just recent events that have pulled a huge crowd to this park. “This was only the fourth occasion that the show had been held in Sheffield and nearly 55,000 people attended. It returned to Hillsborough in 1923 and was held at Coal Aston in 1935 before being based permanently in Harrogate. There were obviously at least two photographers present but there seem to be few surviving pictures of the event.” Let’s hope Tramlines – and the park – has many more successful years and helps put Sheffield on the map for years to come. These photos were taken from the book, Sheffield Parks And Gardens by Douglas Hindmarch (Tempus Publishing Ltd).

The University of Sheffield found that these creative approaches had an unprecedented impact on children’s assessment results. On entering the store, Sarah showed me to the museum section, which features items from famous fairy tales such as the pea from The Princess and The Pea and Cinderella’s glass slipper. I also stepped on some scales to find out what magical creature I am (troll – apparently) and found bundles of scrolls. Sarah explained that these were replies to letters local children had posted to magical creatures in the realms beyond. Then turning to a seemingly normal shelf filled with Grimm & Co stationary, Sarah lifted a bottle, and like something out of a Harry Potter book, she opened a secret door leading to a workshop space. Events take place on the first floor – a quirky, old fashioned library, with ivy growing up the walls and a patio area that overlooks the shop below. We then went to the WC – Writing Centre, where the creative magic happens. Fittingly, the room is playfully kitted out with toilet seat chairs, white tiles and toilet rolls. Sarah explains that it’s these weird and wonderful features that spark kids’ imaginations. “The space has a big impact, and as soon as
you walk through the door, you’re out of your everyday, in this space where everything around you is full of imagination and the people who run the workshops are committed to it. “It’s not home and it’s not school. It’s this other flexible space, kids have ownership of. The key thing is that it’s fun. We take fun very seriously and I think if you’re not enjoying [being creative], you won’t feel any urge to do it independently. “There’s also an element of purpose. The workshops have an end output so you’re writing a story that’s going to get published or pitching a project that is going to get made.” Every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday morning during term time, schools are welcome to attend story making workshops, where children aged seven to 11 write and create their own books, which they take away at the end. And then for children aged seven, eight and nine, there are comedy writing classes developed by Jeremy Dyson from the League of Gentlemen, who is also a trustee of the charity. Other famous supporters include, patron Joanne Harris, author of Chocolat, while 15 associated artists from a range of professional backgrounds often come to share their knowledge. There’s also a product development class where children learn about how Grimm & Co’s products are made and sold in their store. Fusing literacy and enterprise, children can then create a product in groups and then come back and present them in a Dragon’s @PulseRMC
Sarah Christie, creative learning manager
Den-style event, where real ‘dragons’ decide whether to invest. And until the third week of August, while school is out, kids can sign up to do songwriting classes. The lyrics they create will be recorded by professional musicians, and in spring 2019, Sarah and the team plan to do a one-day festival at Wentworth Woodhouse, where the songs will be performed. You will also be able to catch the Grimm & Co team on 7 and 8 September at the Rotherham Show at Clifton Park, where they will be promoting another project called the Embassy for Reimagining Rotherham. What’s more some of their programmes are run through the Arts Award, a nationally recognised qualification. But as Sarah concludes, it’s not about rating and comparing children – it’s simply about getting them excited about engaging with their creativity. “It’s about unleashing their imaginations, but then giving specific positive feedback. Many feel so switched off, that they feel like writing isn’t for them, so it’s about building up confidence. “From the evaluations we’ve received from kids, guardians and parents, we’re told how this feels like a safe space and how they feel so much more confident and comfortable to be themselves and I hope that’s something they are able to carry into the rest of their lives.” If you’d like to find out more about Grimm & Co’s upcoming workshops or volunteering opportunities, join their mailing list by visiting www.grimmandco.co.uk or keep an eye on their Facebook page, @GrimmAndCo. Diamonds are forever… ZOE LEWIS, JEWELLER AND GEMMOLOGIST AT PA JEWELLERY, EXAMINES THE LASTING APPEAL OF ETERNITY RINGS. ustomers often ask us when they should buy an eternity ring for their partner. This isn’t a straightforward question to answer; there is not a single event strongly associated with an eternity ring, as there is with an engagement or wedding ring. They are most commonly purchased as an anniversary gift, often to celebrate a special anniversary such as the first, tenth or twentyfifth. Other popular reasons are the birth of a first child or a special birthday. For most it is the sentiment that is important, and the occasion provides an opportunity for renewing the expression of love that has already been made with the engagement and wedding rings. A complete band of gems makes the perfect symbol of love; reflecting the ancient belief in the circle as a symbol of eternity. Eternity rings themselves have been known since at least the eighteenth century, when they would often feature paste (glass) stones or a mixture of different gems. In the early decades of the twentieth century diamonds were becoming more available and consequently more commonly used in eternity rings. Synthetic spinel was also a popular choice, making use of the latest advances in the synthesis of gemstones to provide a more affordable option that imitated the appearance of diamond.

In the 1960s DeBeers began to promote the idea of a diamond set eternity ring. It allowed DeBeers to target an older, married audience and also provided an opportunity to sell more of the smaller diamonds not suitable for solitaire engagement rings! The original slogan for this campaign was “She married you for richer or poorer. Let her know how it’s going”. This, and subsequent campaigns with similarly light-hearted slogans ensured the giving of an eternity ring soon became a tradition almost as universal as engagement and wedding rings. While eternity rings were traditionally a full band of gems it is now more common for a half-set band to be chosen. The principal reason for this is that it is a more practical style for regular wear since it is plain around the lower half of the band, making the ring easier to adjust in size and more comfortable to wear. The wide range of settings and styles available now also encourages great
variation in what is chosen as an eternity ring. For many people, it is important to find a design that complements their existing engagement and wedding rings, as the eternity ring is traditionally worn alongside them on the same finger. Diamond-set bands traditionally regarded as eternity rings are increasingly popular as wedding rings too. An eternity ring is still often added later, perhaps duplicating the wedding ring to form a complete set on the finger, or worn separately on the right hand, allowing for an expanded choice of style and size. Whatever the occasion, an eternity ring is a beautiful way to reaffirm your love and our experienced team of jewellers and gemmologists can guide you through the process and the range of options available.

EATING OUT
Connoisseurs’ curry RACHEL MARTIN DIVES INTO THE FLAVOURS OF INDIA AT BUTLERS BALTI HOUSE. heffield has long been praised for its South Asian cuisine, with a proliferation of curry houses, balti restaurants and Indian eateries. However, there are a few that have risen above the crowd and carved out a superior niche. Butlers Balti House is one of them; catering for a wide range of cultural palates, including Northern Punjab and Pakistani. Well-placed at the boundaries of Kelham Island, the West Bar district and City Centre, it has long been popular with hard-to-please corporate professionals. Nowadays, however, it is also attracting growing admiration from Sheffield’s army of self-professed curry connoisseurs. My partner and I were greeted by restaurant owner and manager Sajid Quader who had prepared for us a special tasting menu, featuring dishes from all over India, based on our personal spice preference. As we waited for our starter to arrive - the mixed starter for two (£4.95), consisting of seekh kebab, chicken tikka, tandoori lamb chops and tandoori chicken wings - fresh from the kitchen came a selection of goldenas –a-buttercup poppadoms (£0.70) and assorted pickles (£2.50). The poppadoms were crisp and light – just light enough to hold the torrents of pickle,
S

which included mango, lime, mixed pickle and mint and chilli yoghurt – and after we polished off every last morsel, our starter arrived still sizzling in the pan. The chicken tikka - the king of all tikkas in the tandoor repertoire - was moist and mouth wateringly fragrant with a lovely ghee flavour, and the tandoori chicken wings were wonderfully dainty and delicate. The accompanying seekh kebab was cooked to perfection, and the tandoori lamb chops were amply pink and tender. A reflection of the cultural diversity of the local area, Butler’s menu is a tantalising mix of influences from across the Indian subcontinent, and I indulged in “just one more mouthful” several times before being presented with our selection of bespoke curries. The Arabian lamb (£8.50) was a delight; a medium to mild curry which tosses cubes of lamb in a creamy sauce, with fresh mint, coriander and mushrooms. The lamb was beautifully tender and the accompanying flavours were expansive and rich, singling out the freshness of the ingredients. The spicier chicken handi (£8.50) counterpart was just as tasty; an aromatic curry cooked in an earthen pot and laced subtly with coriander and cardamom. It was @PulseRMC
an explosion of pungent flavours; spicy, fresh and delicious. Accompanying the mains was a peshwari (£2.95) and keema naan (£3.25), both toasted and slathered with butter, and coconut rice (£2.95) - the best way to mop up all those aromatic savours. While all this sounds like a greedy feast; this is sharing food, proper sharing food, and blessedly light. Miles removed from those best-known belly-busting curries. Thanks to the Butlers Balti, I have yet another excuse, as if I needed one, to indulge in ‘proper’ Indian cuisine.
