The team at PA Jewellery
Top of the class RISING STAR ZOE LEWIS – JEWELLER AND GEMMOLOGIST AT PA JEWELLERY – HAS GOT THAT WINNING FEELING. A Jewellery’s brilliant jeweller and gemmologist, Zoe Lewis, has once again come top of the class, scooping the Deeks Diamond Prize for the best theory exam paper in the prestigious Gem-A Diamond Diploma. If you think that you are suffering from déjà vu don’t worry, Zoe also won two awards last year when studying for the Gem-A Diploma in Gemmology. After also taking home the Anderson medal for the best results in the Gem-A Gemmology Foundation exam in 2017 Zoe is now one of Gem-A’s most highly awarded gemmologists. The award was presented in a ceremony at the Royal Institution by Antiques Roadshow expert Joanna Hardy. The Gem-A Diamond Diploma is the most respected qualification of its type in the world, and this year was sat by hundreds of students from across the globe. The course covers a wide range of topics concerning the formation, chemistry and properties of diamonds, the processes used to mine, cut and
P
polish them, and techniques to identify natural, synthetic, simulated and treated gems as well as grading the Colour, Clarity and Cut qualities. PA Jewellery managing director Ian Cookson says: “We are so incredibly proud of Zoe and her achievements; having sat the same exams myself I know just how difficult they are but to have reached such a high standard requires another level of commitment and understanding. “What’s great about Zoe is that she can take this in-depth knowledge of diamonds and gemstones and translate it in an easy
Zoe in the workshop at PA Jewellery
to understand and interesting way when advising customers about their jewellery, yet she has a vast library of knowledge to answer any gem-related question if required. Despite her world-leading status she is as down to earth as ever.” Zoe can now add the initials DGA for Diamond member of the Gemmological Association to her existing FGA (Fellow of the Gemmological Association), MA in English literature and BA in English and History. As well as sharing her gemstone knowledge in the showroom Zoe writes the majority of PA Jewellery’s blogs. Zoe says: “I love the fact that my job allows me to share my knowledge with customers and pass on some of the passion I have for gemstones. Writing the blogs also allows me to combine my backgrounds in English and Gemmology!” PA Jewellery The Old Bank, Commonside Sheffield, S10 1GD Tel: 0114 266 9253 www.pajewellery.com www.rmcmedia.co.uk 17

COMPETITION
L-R: Joanne Bates, Allan Ensor and Richard Hawkins
Deck the halls OUR CHRISTMAS TREE COMPETITION PROVOKED A FLURRY OF RESPONSES – BUT THERE COULD ONLY BE ONE WINNER. CONGRATULATIONS TO ALLAN ENSOR AND VISION WINDOWS WHO CROWN THIS MONTH’S FESTIVE COVER. t’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas and to help us spread some yuletide cheer, we asked local businesses across the region to send in pictures of their seasonal spruces as part of our Christmas cover competition and we were quickly inundated with fabulous festive photos from S6 and beyond. Our search to find the best-dressed

Christmas tree brought us a wonderful array of entries, showing off the creative potential of the season. Judging was a joy but choosing a winner was a difficult task and after much deliberation (and the help of a “mischievous” furry-friend) the best-dressed award went to Allan Ensor and the team at Hillsborough-based Vision Windows. “We wanted to share our Christmas
spirit with all of the readers and our customers past and present,” says Allan. “When you think of Christmas, one of the first images to spring to mind is a Christmas tree covered in decorations that have fond memories of years gone by and that’s the inspiration behind our design. “At Vision Windows we celebrate Christmas properly, because it’s the only
COMPETITION
time of year that we all take a break and carve out time to spend together. We can’t resist a little bit of overindulgence; if it’s not our wonderful suppliers dropping in with chocolates, we have mince pies on reception as seasonal treats for anyone who stops by – though we’re partial to pinching one or two of them ourselves. “Pictured is our company mascot Benji. He isn’t happy unless he is at work [we’ve not got him making windows just yet] and he is the life and soul of our office. But don’t be fooled by the cute exterior. Benji is a thief and is constantly stealing documents (and baubles) so that you’ll exchange a treat for its safe return. But we love him dearly. “Thank you to those who voted for our tree. We hope you enjoy the display [and Benji] as much as we do. Merry Christmas from all the team at Vision Windows and a very happy new year and beyond.” Thank you to all the businesses that entered our Christmas cover competition. The winning spruce was voted for by the editorial team and takes pride of place on the front cover of this edition. If you’d like to take part in next year’s competition, keep an eye on our autumn editions for more information. Every Christmas tree is different and special to each business and we hope you enjoy seeing the fantastic variety of decorations on display as much as we did.

This exciting ultra-modern venue with a 500-seater capacity is the perfect spot for large-scale parties, weddings and celebrations of all kinds. The OEC – Owlerton Events & Conferencing to give its full title – nestles snugly between Napoleons Casino and Owlerton Stadium on Penistone Road. Guests on the opening night were bowled over by the delicious food and first rate entertainment on offer in the Rivelin Suite, as they enjoyed a fourcourse meal and a vibrant party atmosphere with a live band and even singing waiters! Gary Cook, venue director, said: “I’m proud to say that our launch party was an absolute triumph, a fabulous event and it was such a huge relief that all the hard work over the last 12 months reached a successful conclusion. “Whatever way you care to express it, a great night out was had by all. Everything clicked, and our team were immense. “I firmly believe The OEC, our stunning, state-of-the-art, multi-purpose space, is the new go-to venue in Sheffield for events and conferencing. Vito and his rare truffle
The 300g winter white
Vito and Mantas
White gold standard A TRIP TO VITO’S IS THE PERFECT WINTER WARMER – WITH AN ADDED BIT OF LUXURY. WRITES RICHARD ABBEY. nyone who knows Vito Ciaraolo will know that he loves his truffles. He regularly gets them imported from Italy and has even been ‘home’ to conduct his own hunts for these little nuggets of ‘white gold’. The timing of our visit to Vito’s much-loved Walkey restaurant couldn’t have been better as he’d just taken delivery of a rather special – and extremely rare – 300g ‘winter white’ truffle, which was three times bigger than the ones he usually receives. “When I opened the parcel, I was shocked,” beamed Vito. “In 42 years of my restaurant career, I haven’t seen one of them that big. To get one like this, especially in England, is very rare.” Vito has always featured dishes with truffle on his menu but the arrival of this fantastic fungus means you can pretty much have it with anything – pasta, risotto, steak… you name it. At £7 for 10g, it’s a small price to pay for a little bit of luxury. I couldn’t resist and Vito recommended I start with a classic spaghetti carbonara (£7.20) but with the truffle substituting the guanciale (cured pork cheek). The pasta was
A
cooked perfectly and the velvety smooth egg and cheese sauce was just right, with subtle hints of truffle providing a delectable balance. Across the table, my companion tucked into insalata di polipo (£9.95), a generous portion of marinated octopus served with salad. Of course there’s much more to Vito’s than truffles. The South Road restaurant has a long-standing reputation for serving up top-notch authentic Italian cuisine and continues to impress. Whilst Vito spent most of his time in the kitchen, he’s now more front of house, leaving the cooking in the capable hands of his chef, Mantas, who has been with him for seven years. For mains we were both drawn to the specials board and winter warming dishes of wild boar (£24.95) and venison stew (£21.95), both very much in season and the perfect remedy to the decreasing temperatures outside. The wild boar was served in a moreish tomato sauce and accompanied by strips of pappardelle pasta – hearty and filling. My venison, served on a bed of polenta, was lovely and rich and packed with flavour. The accompanying
potatoes and vegetables were very good too. We finished with a soufflé al cioccolato (£5.95) and coppa affogato (£5.95). The former was a rich pudding with a melting chocolate sauce – terrifically indulgent – whilst the affogato was deliciously refreshing – three scoops of vanilla ice cream drenched in a shot of espresso and Frangelico liqueur. The restaurant’s cosy setting is the perfect spot for a Christmas or new year get together; see his website – www.vitos.org.uk - for more. And if you to sample Vito’s spectacular truffle… you’ll have to be quick. Vito’s 284 South Road, Walkley Sheffield, S6 3TE Tel: 0114 233 3574 www.vitos.org.uk

CHRISTMAS QUIZ
Fond farewells
Don’t quote me...
We said goodbye to a host of famous names over the past 12 months. Can you recognise these dearly departed souls from 2019?
Who made the news in 2019 with the following snappy soundbites?
1. He started as a dancer for an English electronic group before taking on lead vocals. Huge success followed in the late 1990s. His fierce stage image led to him being regarded as a “twisted Firestarter”. 2. Regarded as one of the greatest goalkeepers of all time, this Sheffield-born stopper began his football career at Chesterfield, won the World Cup with England and denied Brazil’s Pele four years later with a stunning diving save many regard as the best ever. 3. This English stand-up comedian and impressionist became an overnight sensation after appearing on the Royal Variety Performance in the early 1970s. Controversy followed when a tabloid newspaper front page accused him of eating a small furry rodent. 4. From horse racing pundit to reality TV star, this flamboyant character had an eventful life packed with highs and lows. He won awards for campaigning journalism, appeared on Celebrity Big Brother and was sacked from the Channel 4 Racing team when his humour, which he admitted was sexist, was deemed unsuitable and outdated.
6. “We want to, and we are going to, deliver on the mandate of the people, which is to take the UK out of the EU whole and entire on 31 October.” 7. “He died like a dog. He died like a coward. The world is now a much safer place.” 8. “Immigrants make Britain great.” 9. “The eyes of all future generations are upon you. And if you choose to fail us, I say – we will never forgive you.” 10. “When I first met my now husband, my friends were really happy because I was so happy. But my British friends said to me: ‘I’m sure he’s great. But you shouldn’t do it because the British tabloids will destroy your life’”
Tramlines Festival
?
?
5. This American singer, actress and animal welfare activist became a Hollywood legend with a string of hit musicals and comedies, including Calamity Jane and Pillow Talk.
Sing a song of Christmas...
Strictly Sheffield
Some are sublime, others are just plain daft, but unless you hide away in a cave over the next month there will be no avoiding the non-stop soundtrack of festive tunes. Can you name the song from these lyric snippets.
Can you identify these local headline makers from 2019? 16. Which former Sheffield lord mayor became the first Green MEP for Yorkshire and the Humber? 17. Who did Sheffield’s Tramlines Festival rename its Main Stage after?
11. Hallelujah Noel be it Heaven or Hell The Christmas we get we deserve 12. Now I know what a fool I’ve been But if you kissed me now / I know you’d fool me again
18. Name the Sheffield-born England footballer who was sent off playing in a World Cup semi-final.
14. Someday soon we all will be together / If the fates allow Until then we’ll have to muddle through somehow
19. Who was given a star in the pavement Walk of Fame outside Sheffield Town Hall for his part in honouring the stricken crew of an American bomber which crashed in wartime Sheffield?
15. Decorations of red on a green Christmas tree Won’t be the same, dear, if you’re not here with me
20. Which Sheffield MP announced his resignation in July 2019 but then changed his mind.
13. Top to toe in tailbacks / I got red lights on the run
Park Life Sheffield is renowned for being one of the greenest cities in the UK including some fabulous parks. Can you recognise these five local gems? 21

Deserved recognition THERE IS PLENTY TO CELEBRATE FOR IRWIN MITCHELL’S FAMILY LAW TEAMS. he Yorkshire Family Law teams at Irwin Mitchell are celebrating after numerous successes in the teams over the past couple of months. In September the Sheffield family law team was ranked in the top tier in the Legal 500 with the head of the Sheffield team, Zoe Round, being ranked as a Leading Individual for Family Law. The Leeds Family Law team were also ranked in the Legal 500 with testimonials describing the team as “a personal approach to family law, which a client might not otherwise expect to find in a large firm”. On 10 October the teams celebrated a double triumph after beating some tough competition at the Yorkshire Legal Awards to win Family Team of the Year and being ranked in Chambers and Partners – all on the same day. The Yorkshire Legal Awards was attended by Zoe Round, Maisie Huynh and Roopen Kalirai who were delighted to accept the award for Family Law Team of the year. The team was recognised as “being highly acclaimed by their clients both for their breadth of legal knowledge but also for showing a caring attitude”. At the ceremony Zoe Round described the win as phenomenal and praised the team for their contribution to the win; the award was dedicated to the leadership of Martin Loxley who had successfully led the team for a number of years. Irwin Mitchell was also shortlisted in six other categories including residential property, employment and private client. The much awaited Chambers and Partners 2020 publication ranked the Sheffield family law team as the only family law team in Band 1 for Family Law in Sheffield and the surrounding area and the Leeds team in Band 2. The Chambers and Partners entry noted that the team is “highly respected for the breadth of its expertise and its handling of high-value and complex matters”. The team was highly praised for its client care with one interviewee commenting that the team “consistently endeavour to
T

offer a high level of service to their clients” and “Client care is a priority and one of their areas of strength“. A number of individuals were highlighted in Chambers and Partners as notable practitioners in the area. Zoe Round was described as “pragmatic and practical” with her “collaborative, outcome-focused approach.” Former National Head of Family Law Martin Loxley was ranked as a senior statesperson for his “deeply experienced” presence in the market. Associate Solicitor Maisie Huynh, who is based in Sheffield but also works in Leeds, was highlighted as one of the Associates to Watch with sources saying “She often deals with more complex issues and has a strong understanding of the financial implications of a situation”. The team had the most number of notable practitioners recommended in the directory; with Maisie Huynh being the only Associate to Watch for family law in Sheffield. Zoe Round is keen to highlight that the successes of the Legal 500 and Chambers and Partners rankings were based on the successes of the team as a whole: “we have a one team mentality and our breadth of expertise
means that we are able to offer the best service to all clients at every level”. Behind the scenes the teams have gone from strength to strength. Scott Halliday was promoted to Associate in October 2019. In August trainee solicitor Edward Allan completed his training contract with the firm and has been retained as part of the Sheffield family law team. Olivia Green and Ellie Fairhurst joined the teams in Leeds and Sheffield as part of the firm’s Apprentice Paralegal programme; and in October, Clodie Allott, a paralegal in Sheffield, was offered a training contract with the firm. Zoe Round explains that the development of the team at every level is a key driver; there is an emphasis on inclusivity and diversity to ensure that the team recruits and retains the best possible talent. DO YOU REMEMBER?
Retail therapy LOCAL BUSINESSES WERE LONG THE BEATING HEART OF THE COMMUNITY. DO YOU RECOGNISE ANY OF THESE WELL-LOVED STORES? he retail world is changing all the time and we’ve chosen a selection of images this month that most definitely hark back to an era where people shopped local and going online was not an option. The photographs may belong to a long-vanished world but they may inspire a few family reminiscences. Last month’s photos, from Barry Couldwell, showed a slice of local life from Wharncliffe including the football team. Meanwhile the memories continue to resonate following the images of Stocksbridge Junior School, published in our October issue. Nigel Clark sends us the following names. Back row (l-r): Jessie Clark, (Nigel’s mother, later Head of Midhope School), Jean Woodhead, Jack Yates, Eric (?) Lines, Norma Pears (later Head of Bolsterstone School, who recently celebrated her 90th birthday). Front Row: Mollie Firth, Ron West, (Headteacher), John Auger, Sheila Lines. Nigel says the date would be 1956 or 1957. Now let’s see how you get on this month

Last month:
WELCOME... Chair’s Message: The year is gradually moving towards Christmas and with it comes a feast of festive activities and celebrations. Reflecting back to the autumn; we held three Parish events in Stocksbridge, Ecclesfield and Bradfield in late September. Temperatures soared as we opened the sunshine-filled afternoon with tree planting in the community orchard on Plumpton Lane where I was presented with the ‘special spade’ bestowed by Samuel Fox & Co in 1951 to celebrate the regeneration of Wharncliffe Forest and helped the Sheffield & Rotherham Wildlife Trust plant two cherry trees. Refreshments followed at St. Nicholas Church where an informative talk was given by Julie Riley on forestry biodiversity and the evening’s bat walk provided a thoroughly good ending to this year’s events – which we are in talks about building on annually. We have held many meetings regarding The Oughtibridge Valley development, which are still ongoing as we tie up the final details surrounding services and
amenities and other complex issues such as Sheffield and Barnsley’s shared responsibility for the Old Mill site. With September came the annual inspection of our allotments in Kaye Meadows. We arrived on a mild but very wet Wednesday morning walking the whole site including the hay meadow and beehive enclosure. The allotment holders are doing an excellent job and we look forward to celebrating their endeavours in our spring newsletter. We also welcomed our annual celebration of the ancient well blessing ceremony at St. James Church in Midhopestones. This tradition was established in 11th century and has continued through the years. With that in mind, our final ‘item of interest’ of the year is a further celebration of St James Church and can be found overleaf. Remembrance Day is always an important part of our year, when we think proudly of those who have lived and died in the service of others. This year wreaths were laid by Cllr Miriam Cates in Oughtibridge and Cllr Peter Butler in
Stannington, while I was honoured to lay the wreath in St. Nicholas Church in High Bradfield. We have been working hard to increase the distribution of our newsletter and expand delivery to even more of our parishioners this year. This is ongoing with the help of Sixer magazine, but we’re already receiving positive feedback. While our website and offices are looking fresher thanks to a seasonal spruce up. Once again, we asked our local primary schools to send in their Christmas card designs and enjoyed a fantastic festive celebration, where I was delighted to assist the winning entrant in lighting up the Parish. Judging is a mammoth task, but one we always relish and in the following pages you can enjoy our shortlisted entries. Chairman Councillor Stephen Bennett

THE WINNER!
CHRISTMAS CARD COMPETITION Once again, we held our annual Christmas card competition and were delighted to receive lots of wonderful entries from three of the local primary schools in the Parish. Pupils from Stannington Infant School, Loxley Primary School and Oughtibridge Primary School were all tasked with creating a festive design and our councillors were tasked with the very pleasant but difficult assignment of
choosing two finalists from each school, from which an overall winner was selected. The winning design, painted by Isla Rose Renshaw from Stannington Infant School, featured “Santa and his sleigh on Christmas Eve”, surrounded by twinkling lights and accompanying by a creative handprint reindeer. Isla’s design will feature on the front of this year’s Bradfield Parish Christmas card
collection, with the other finalists’ fabulous designs printed inside. Isla Rose’s mum, Leanne said she loved taking part and was over the moon to have been chosen as the winner. “She came running out of school with the biggest smile on her face and she couldn’t contain her excitement. We were so proud when she told us she’d won, and she was so excited to turn on this year’s Christmas lights.”

RUNNERS UP
All the finalists and their parents were invited to a tea party at the Council offices, where the designs were on display and guests enjoyed a festive buffet catered for by Caroline Graham. Chairman Cllr Stephen Bennett presented each pupil with a nativity advent calendar and each school also received a ÂŁ50 book token for taking part. Following the tea party, it was time for the highlight of the evening – the Parish’s Christmas light switch on. Everyone gathered outside and began the countdown while, as winner of the competition, Isla Rose stepped up to the podium and pushed down the plunger which turned on the lights across the Parish. “This is the highlight of the festive season and a fantastic way to bring in Christmas,â€? says Cllr Bennett. “It really is great working with all the local schools to
Isla Rose Renshaw from Stannington Infant School switches on the Christmas lights
produce such wonderful Christmas cards. It was a very hard decision for our councillors, but we decided on Isla Rose’s creative Santa’s sleigh scene and we are proud to send the cards out to all the Sheffield dignitaries. I’d like to take this opportunity to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

WELL BLESSINGS AT ST. JAMES CHURCH MIDHOPESTONES Bradfield Parish council sponsor the annual Well Blessings at St. James Church in Midhopestones; a tradition that involves blessing the St James Well, dedicated to the farming communities and the Potters Well situated in the village of Midhopestones, dedicated to industry. This Well Blessing is an ancient ceremony established in the 11th century. The ceremonies held in superstitious reverie long before Anglo Saxon, Dane, or Normans came and continuing throughout
the following centuries. The service occurs in September at the Grade II listed St James the Less church on Chapel Lane. Thomas de Barnby was Lord of the Manor of Midhope from 1337 to 1354, when his nephew, Robert de Barnby took his place. It was probably Robert who founded the church; laying the foundation stones in 1360 and it was originally a private Chapel for the Barnby family. After the Reformation, the family found themselves impoverished; incurring heavy fines for continuing to follow the catholic religion. They consequently sold the manor and in 1690, Godfrey Bosville of Gunthwaite Hall purchased it for £2256, restoring the church in 1705 and adding the bell Cupola. The Grade II listed church is administered by Penistone & Thurlstone
Team Ministry, retaining the 3pm service time originally established so that the farming congregation could attend between morning and evening milking. There is reputedly a tunnel leading from the chapel to Midhope Hall, which was the Manorial Home of Elias de Midhope and according to the current owner of the Hall, it appears that during years of farming and gardening, many dressed stones have been dug up in the direction where a tunnel could have run from the Hall towards the church [interesting]. The church still features original timber, several closed pews with family names inscribed and ascending to the upper gallery, the chain is still present near the bell. Scents of the season
Snug rugs
Updating your home fragrance is a simple yet effective way to welcome the new season with a nod to winter hues. Look for rich and warming scents combining bergamot, frankincense and amber, which are ideal to capture the aroma of a crackling open fire. Made from mineral wax blended with a high-quality fragrance, this handmade botanical candle from Sophie Allport will burn for up to 72 hours while gently scenting your room. Don’t be fooled into thinking that rugs only belong on wooden or uncarpeted floors. Adding softness under foot in the form of layers of rugs not only keeps in the heat, but also means you can sidestep your slippers. This Louis de Poortere rug has been woven on jacquard Wilton looms, giving it a high-quality finish. It is made from a combination of pure wool and cotton chenille and each rug is hand distressed for a vintage feel. Bring the outside in
Warm up your walls
Winter is not a time to be spending excessive amounts of time outdoors but that doesn’t mean we can’t bring a touch of nature indoors at a time when the thought of going outside seems unbearable. Crafted from chunky round rattan for a rustic finish, this simple curved log holder is the perfect fireside storage solution. Each features a generous capacity for storing logs, with two sturdy feet and a handle to either side for ease of carrying. Round rattan log basket by Cox & Cox £45 www.coxandcox.co.uk
It might not seem like the most obvious place to start, but a fresh lick of paint in the right colour will help to make your home feel a lot warmer. So, swap cold white walls for dark, deep colours that will transform any space. Traditionally, colours such as red and orange were used to bring warmth to an interior, but rich shades of navy blue, emerald green and dark grey are just as sumptuous. Barbara’s magical reindeer food is a Christmas hit for St Luke’s Hospice How do you guarantee a visit from Santa on Christmas Eve? You need a special sprinkling of Barbara Fletcher’s magical reindeer food! Barbara has been a volunteer at the St Luke’s Hospice Chapeltown shop for almost 17 years, where one of her fundraising successes is her special recipe festive reindeer food. “I had a lightbulb moment when I used to purchase bags of reindeer food for my grandchildren and thought it would be a good idea to make my own to raise money for St Luke’s,” Barbara explained. The reindeer food – which has now been on sale for nine years – has to be sprinkled onto the garden on Christmas Eve, to act as a guide for Rudolph and his fellow reindeer. With the help of her sister Janice, and friend Sue, who make and print out the labels, Barbara makes up the reindeer food using oats donated by the Chapeltown branch of Asda and wraps them up in red voile which she purchases herself. Barbara sells almost 300 bags of reindeer food each year and she also gift aids her donation to St Luke’s, increasing the amount raised by 25 per cent. And with every bag of reindeer food purchased there comes a free prize draw ticket to win a ‘chocolate extravaganza’ donated by Asda Chapeltown. The draw will be made on 20 December.
Foxhill care home’s resident VIP opens new dementia wing Foxhill residential care home Midhurst Road had its very own VIP to perform the opening ceremony for its new dementia wing – for the official ribbon cutting ceremony was performed by Ron Gilbey, the home’s longest serving resident. Midhurst Road is one of ten sites operated throughout Sheffield by not for profit organisation Sheffcare. Its new dementia wing is made up of 14 Ron Gilbey with members of the Midhurst team rooms, all with en-suite facilities and specially designed to meet the needs of residents living with dementia. Other special features in the wing – staffed by specialist dementia care workers – include a ‘magic’ table, which uses interactive, colourful, moving light games for people to interact and play with. “We are delighted that we can now offer specialist dementia in nine out of our ten homes,” said Sheffcare Chief Executive Belinda Black. Sacred Heart Centenary Sacred Heart Catholic Church is situated on Forbes Road right at the heart of the Hillsborough community. As a Grade II listed building, its fine tower is a prominent landmark in the area. Sacred Heart is a vibrant parish with a diverse and inclusive congregation providing a warm welcome to all who enter its doors. Prior to the 1850s, the Catholic community of Hillsborough and Walkley was affiliated to the parish St Vincent’s Parish in Solly Street but they worshipped in the chapel of the army barracks – which was just opposite the current site – becoming an independent parish in August 1920. So, next year Sacred Heart Parish is celebrating its centenary and to mark this there will be a variety of events throughout the year showing how the parish has evolved over the years and culminating in a grand finale of worship and celebration in September. This promises to be an exciting year for the parish and they look forward to welcoming people throughout the coming months of celebration and, indeed, in the future! 74 www.rmcmedia.co.uk

12 days of Christmas challenge
Wise Old Owls give their support to city homeless charity
On the 12 Days of Christmas Sam Warsop has a very special gift for St Luke’s Hospice. But instead of the classic festive song’s Partridge in a Pear Tree, she’s giving Sheffield’s only hospice a gift that will make a difference. To mark the traditional full 12 days of the Christmas break, the publishing manager at RMC Media is going through her wardrobe and selecting 12 outfits to donate to the awardwinning chain of St Luke’s shops. “At Easter I donate 40 items to St Luke’s, one for every day of Lent and that has always proved so successful that I now do something similar for Christmas,” said Sam. “I can’t think of a charity more deserving of our support than St Luke’s and if I can find 12 items in my wardrobe, then I’m absolutely certain that everybody else can too. “So let’s make it a Christmas to remember and make sure that the St Luke’s shelves are full of brilliant Festive fashions!” Donations can be left at any of the St Luke’s shops any day during normal opening hours. To find the full list of locations visit www.stlukeshospice.org.uk
Homeless charity Emmaus Sheffield has scored after striking up a new partnership with the Wise Old Owls! The Wise Old Owls is a supporters group for Sheffield Wednesday fans over the age of 50. It meets on the third Wednesday of every month in the 1867 Lounge at Sheffield Wednesday’s Hillsborough ground. It was at one of those meetings that members invited representatives of charity Emmaus Sheffield to come along and talk about how the organisation works. The Wise Old Owls had also organised for all the attendees as well as fans of Sheffield Wednesday to bring a bag of clothes each to donate to Emmaus Sheffield, the drug and alcohol free project that provides a home, support and work for previously homeless people at its base down on Cadman Street. “This was a fantastic gesture by the Wise Old Owls and one that gave us a van full of items to take back for our shop,” said Emmaus Sheffield CEO Graham Bostock. “We are always very happy to come along and talk about our work to any businesses or groups in Sheffield. This can shed a little more light on homelessness and what we are doing at Emmaus to support the men and women who are trying to get their lives back on track again. “The Wise Old Owls not only listened to us but then went the extra mile and made the sort of gesture that really does make a massive difference to the success of our retail operation, especially as we approach our busy Christmas season.” To find out more about Emmaus Sheffield and its work with the homeless and how to arrange a meeting or a visit www.emmaus-sheffield.org.uk

HEROES
Rising to the challenge GAY FLETCHER IS CLOSE TO FINISHING A YEAR OF FUNDRAISING TO RAISE MONEY FOR PROSTATE CANCER UK AFTER LOSING HER BROTHER TO THE DISEASE FIVE YEARS AGO. CHRIS WILSON SPOKE TO HER ABOUT THE CHALLENGES SHE FACED – AND OVERCAME. cott Vessey died of prostate cancer aged 50 in January 2014. But the memory of this loving Sheffield father of three is living on thanks to the charity fund-raising efforts of his sister Gay Fletcher and a determined band of family members and volunteers. Scott was a keen footballer who also gave a huge amount back to his local community with his coaching and managing for Scott and Gay Wisewood Juniors as children FC. A much-loved and larger than life character, Gay is determined that his memory should live on in a positive light. She says: “This year we have been without Scott in our lives for five years and I did not want to remember this milestone with sadness and regret, but with love, hope and memories in my heart, celebrating the wonderful time I had with him, remembering his humour, feisty personality and strength.” In celebration of Scott’s life Gay decided to embark on a series of physical feats, namely 56 half marathons and a separate monthly challenge. Sadly injuries put paid to her mega half marathon challenge but she refused to give up and, with a little help from her friends, has completed a series of monthly challenges. Fund-raising on behalf of Prostate Cancer UK and Marie Curie Cancer started when Scott was still alive when family and friends staged the Hull to Sheffield ‘Tour De Vessey’ (TDV) cycle ride in December 2013, which raised an impressive £12,000. Sadly Scott died the following month and when one of Gay’s close friends lost

A well-earned drink... The end of a two-day 120-mile cycle ride from Southport to Sheffield
her father to the same disease this only hardened her resolve to channel her grief into something positive. “It keeps the memory of Scott alive,” says Gay. “He had two young sons who are 25 and 21 now and a daughter who is 21. My dad had to have his prostate out the year after Scott died and he’s 77 Scott with his family
now, and other males in the family had or have prostate cancer.” This year’s fund-raising efforts have raised a total of £10,644 so far with two more events to go to round up the year – a cycle ride from Glasgow to Edinburgh and back and a 12-hour spin bike ‘spinathon’. The centrepiece of this year’s fundraising challenge was a two-day 120-mile cycle ride from Southport to Sheffield which started on 31 August – which would have been Scott’s 56th birthday – and finished the following day in Sheffield at The Rivelin pub. Gay said: “The most challenging part was cycling with 14 blokes who aren’t great with directions. Then at one stage part of the route was blocked off due to a police incident and we had to find an alternative route. “But it was all part of the adventure and Scott would have laughed at the
HEROES
thought of some of the group riding, as some had not been on a bike for years and probably won’t again after two days in the saddle. “It was a fantastic effort by all the volunteers and Simon, the landlord at The Rivelin, gave us a massive welcome at the end with food, raffles and an auction of sporting memorabilia.” Another memorable event in Gay’s year of sporting challenges was the Three Dams Challenge family fun day. Based at Bradfield cricket pavilion, those taking part had the option of walking, running or cycling around one, two or all three of the local dams – Agden, Dale Dyke and Dam Flask. It was a fabulous day which was started in style when John Hemmingham from the Sheffield Wednesday band came along and sounded his trumpet to herald the start of the event. With the year of fund-raising events coming to a close Gay, one of the founders of the Strideout Running Group, is planning to take a back seat on the fund-raising front in 2020, although there will be one more memorial event around 31 August to tie in with Scott’s birthday.
But she hopes that alongside the money raised for good causes this year in Scott’s memory, there has also been an increased awareness among men of the need to check themselves for early signs of prostate cancer. Finding the disease at an early stage offers the best hope for living cancerfree for a long time and early warning signs of prostate cancer include burning or pain during urination, loss of bladder control, difficulty urinating or trouble starting and stopping, more trips to the bathroom at night and blood in urine or semen. Gay says: “It’s about men being a little bit more like us women – we are not shy about speaking up and asking the doctor if we don’t feel everything is right. I understand the male thing about being noble and stoic and saying ‘we can cope, we are tough.’ “But sometimes that has a negative side too if you ignore the symptoms. The national Prostate Cancer UK fundraising campaign led by Jeff Stelling has done a lot not just to raise money but to raise awareness, and it’s really important.”
We’re on the hunt for heroes in 2020 Never mind Superman or Wonder Woman... Westside is on the look-out for some real life local heroes. We know there are lots of people out there who dedicate a huge part of their lives to making the world a better place for others. Do you know someone who is going that extra mile to raise funds for a good cause or make a difference in their community? Has a friend or relative overcome adversity and channelled their energies into helping others? Please let us know... so we can share the good news in Westside every month. MOTORING
Snow joke LOOK AFTER YOUR CAR AND IT WILL LOOK AFTER YOU... MAKE SURE YOUR CAR IS FIT FOR THE WINTER MONTHS AHEAD FROM THESE LOCAL GARAGES. here is a distinct chill in the air and the nights are rapidly drawing in. While we’re not in the depths of winter just yet, it won’t be long before icy roads, heavy snowfall and lashing rain begin to wreak havoc on our cars. If you don’t show your car some attention before the really cold weather hits, it may let you down when you need it most. Follow our advice and you’ll avoid the problems most frequently faced by drivers during the winter months. The most common cause of breakdowns is a failing battery, particularly in winter. During colder
spells a battery is more susceptible to the power output dropping and losing voltage as it is less able to accept a charge so it doesn’t recharge while you’re driving. If the majority of your journeys are short, or you often leave the car standing still for days at a time, it may be wise to invest in a modern battery conditioner or intelligent charger. This will help to prolong its life, giving you better value from your existing battery. Whatever hazards the winter roads throw at us, now’s the time to give your car a thorough check-up. These local experts will keep you safe and on the road.
Smithy Garage
Eric Stead
Smithy Garage in Bradfield can take care of all motor needs from servicing to repair, and also offer a number of services to ensure vehicles are running as cost effectively as possible. Rather than charge inflated prices, Smithy Garage operates a fair and honest pricing system, building up trusting relationships with customers. Owner Steve Hammond believes that sustaining these relationships is the best way to attract business and many customers come from recommendations. They cater for any make and model, from Reliant Robins to Bentleys, and in particular the garage has a great deal of experience with four-wheel drives in any make or model.
With winter on its way, make sure your vehicle is in tip-top shape. Make sure your tyres have at least the minimum legal tread, that your lights are working well, your oil and coolant are topped up, your brakes are working to their optimum and your wiper blades are doing their job. Visibility and grip can be poor in torrential rain or snowstorms. At Eric Stead, a team of specialist technicians can check over your vehicle to ensure you are safe on the roads. Call them today to book in your vehicle on 0114 245 4404 or visit www.ericstead.co.uk
Whether you’ve chosen your car based on your lifestyle, or perhaps because you trust a particular make or model, you’ll know the importance of finding a garage that fully understands and uses the correct equipment for your vehicle. If you drive a Volkswagen, Audi, Seat or Skoda, help is at hand. Autohaus Dolby only work on Volkswagen group cars and vans, providing the sort of brand-specific knowledge you’d expect from a franchised dealer, only at independent prices. Earlier this year, Autohaus Dolby made the move from Century Street to their new premises on Barleywood Road, investing heavily both financially and in hard work to ensure they’re able to continue providing excellent service for their customers. “We put a huge amount of effort into making our customers comfortable,” says Matt. “Customer service and creating more positive and personal relationships with our customers is just as important to us as the manual work we do.
