PULSECONTENTS
EDITOR’S MESSAGE: appy New Year and welcome to the first edition of Pulse for 2015. We have a great issue in store for you this month, packed with local interviews, advice that will motivate your new year’s resolutions and even tales from a European adventure. We always like to celebrate the success of our readers, and Adam J. Watts is a prime example. Not only has Adam become involved with a host of local events and activities, gained two university degrees and – most recently – self-published his debut novel, he is also just 27 years old. We speak to him about how he manages to squeeze it all in on page 46. If Adam’s story inspires you to take on a new challenge, we have some great tips on page 40 for beating the January blues. From borrowing a dog to celebrating Burns night – prepare to inject some excitement into this notoriously dull month. And if these small changes don’t quite satisfy your adventurous side, why not embark on a journey of discovery in Poland’s historical yet cosmopolitan city of Gdansk? Fiona Barber explored the fascinating old town and got a taste of its more recent developments when she visited this unsung city (page 36). If you have a story to share, are hosting an event that you’d like us to publicise or have photographs of a recent celebration or event, we’d love to hear from you. Email stephanie.burns@regionalmagazine.co.uk or call me on 0114 250 6300 (Monday to Thursday 9am-5.30pm and Friday 9am-4pm). If you have a business and would like to advertise in Pulse, please call Publishing Manager Helen Wragg on 0114 250 6300 or email pulse@regionalmagazine.co.uk. You can also follow us on Twitter (@PulseRMC) or read Pulse (and the rest of Regional Magazine Company’s titles) online at www.regionalmagazine.co.uk. See you again next month.

PULSECOMPETITION Chappuccino, left
Lo Pharmacy, right
Words: Stephanie Burns
FESTIVE WINNERS Businesses brighten up Chapeltown with fun shop window displays
rightening up the cold dark nights and bringing a smile to all who visited the village during the festive period, the Christmas window displays of more than 30 Chapeltown businesses were among the best the town had ever seen. The initiative has been running for three years, after being introduced by local community group Chapeltown Forum in 2012. Designed to attract new customers and delight those loyal to the many local shops and services, the competition has been very well received. Pulse was honoured with the task of helping to judge the 2014 competition, along with the forum’s chairman John Housley and treasurer Sue McTighe. Battling the dreadful weather, we made our way around Chapeltown and were hugely impressed by the effort on display in many of the welcoming windows. Once our rounds were complete, we stepped into Newton Hall to dry off and give careful consideration to each entry. After much deliberation, we chose Haybrook as the overall winner. The lifesized snowman, crafted by hand from scrunched-up white bin liners, couldn’t fail to raise a smile and we felt they had really captured the spirit of the competition.
B
The estate agency also encouraged customers and passers-by to take a ‘selfie’ with the snowman and upload the image to social media, further promoting the competition and showing real initiative in the digital age. “Each year, we try to spend as little money as possible on our display and the only thing we bought this year was the hat,” explained Haybrook Chapeltown manager Nick Walsham, who was delighted to come first. “The design was the brainchild of our trainee negotiator Jess Davison and our valuer Michael Rowbottom came up with the selfie idea.” Coming a very close second and third were Lo Pharmacy and Chappuccino. The pharmacy impressed with their joyful snow scene – complete with Santa Claus, reindeer and sledge – and the traditional colours and décor of Chappuccino’s window offered a wonderfully stylish display. A special mention must also be given to More Than Just Cards, 1st Choice Photography, Staniforths, St Luke’s, and Snoopy’s who were just pipped to the post by the winners. And a huge thank you goes to all involved for adding an extra special touch to Christmas in Chapeltown.

Testimonial Jim, 66 When my daughter dropped a less-than-subtle hint about me getting in shape before her wedding in May, my wife Jen and I decided to join Fitness Garage. From the moment we walked in, the atmosphere was welcoming and the staff were friendly – everything was great. Now, after five months of training, our body shapes have improved, we have lost weight and our health has increased dramatically. Our age has never been an issue as everyone is welcomed equally. The staff are experienced, dedicated, knowledgeable and professional – we can’t praise them enough. We train three times a week and it’s the best money we’ve ever spent. This is the fittest I have ever been and my quality of life has improved as a result. We have achieved everything we wanted to, and more, and will be continuing with our new lifestyle and training routine even after the wedding. of expertise. s we pack away the tinsel and savour the last mince pie, it is with a sigh of disappointment that the Christmas festivities draw to a close for another year. But whilst the holidays may have passed, winter is well and truly here to stay. The cold weather can leave our homes and gardens looking a sorry state and, with frosty temperatures killing off our plants and flowers, the last thing we want to do is venture outside in January. So why not bring the outdoors indoors this winter and enjoy all the joys of nature in the warmth and comfort of your own home? No weeding or digging required!

PROMOTIONKIP MCGRATH
Ecclesfield’s new Kip McGrath Education Centre can help your children to be the best they can be. he brand new Kip McGrath Education Centre in Ecclesfield is part of a worldwide organisation offering professional tuition to children aged six to 16. The centre uses resources that ensure your child makes steady and continual progress in literacy and numeracy outside of school. Lessons are tailored to each child and designed to give them the joy of achievement in a fun and focused environment. The centre, on Hydra Business Park, is run by David Kaye, a qualified teacher and former headteacher with 24 years’ teaching experience in South and West Yorkshire. He has led on English, spent time as a maths co-ordinator, has a strong focus on ICT and is trained as a SENCO (Special Educational Needs Co-ordinator). At Kip McGrath, every child is treated as an individual, with their own tailored learning programme. Work is based on their skills and learning style and there are only five students per class. The centre follows the national curriculum and keeps up to date with new learning technologies, psychology and learning theory. The initial, free assessment, for which every child is eligible, helps to develop an individual learning plan based on each child’s needs and learning style. Some of the children at Kip McGrath are between one and three years behind in education, for a variety of reasons. The centre is well-equipped to tailor learning plans to children with special needs such as dyslexia, dyspraxia, Asperger’s and autism. As well as helping students who are falling behind, Kip McGrath can equally accommodate high achievers by supporting them with extra work to help them excel at school. Classes help to keep them stimulated and engaged as they can learn at their own pace, resulting in them being more focused and motivated at school. Children also attend Kip McGrath for help in the run-up to exams such as Year 6 SATs or Year 11 GCSEs, and adults are welcome to attend if they are required to brush up on their maths or English skills. Students usually attend one evening per week after school, although extra sessions can be added during exam times. David is keen to create an atmosphere in which the students

are incredibly supportive of one another, helping them to grow in confidence and achieve more. Although the pupils work to their individual learning plans, they are always aware of their friends’ progress and they are taught that mistakes are simply an opportunity to learn. HANDBELL TEAM READY TO RING This proud group is part of an Ecclesfield musical tradition stretching back more than a century. Words: Stephanie Burns cclesfield has had a group of handbell ringers since Thomas Kitson first formed a family team in the 1880s. But it wasn’t until 1904 that the landlord of the Greyhound Inn, Mr Hirst, put together the Ecclesfield Handbell Ringers – shown here – with 68 handbells and a group of friends. It was another 41 years before women were allowed to join and this photograph, taken in 1960, features female members Winnie Lester and Eileen Taylor. The picture was taken from Ecclesfield, Chapeltown & High Green From Old Photographs by local authors Joan and Mel Jones, which contains hundreds of old images of S35 dating from the early 1900s onwards. If you recognise anyone in this photograph, or have memories of the Ecclesfield Handbell Ringers that you would like to share, please get in touch with editor Stephanie Burns on 0114 250 6300 or email Stephanie.Burns@regionalmagazine.co.uk and we will print your comments in the next issue.

PROMOTIONFITNESS UNLIMITED
Beat the Christmas bloat! Join Sheffield’s award-winning gym membership scheme this January. aten too many mince pies this Christmas? Spent too much time on the sofa watching festive TV? Well there’s no better time than January to beat the bloat and make fitness your number one resolution for 2015! So why not shape up and shed that extra winter weight with Sheffield’s most popular health and fitness membership scheme – Fitness Unlimited? Don’t just take our word for it! Fitness Unlimited won no less than four awards at the recent Health Club Awards, which were voted for by our 18,000 members. Membership gets you unlimited access to gym, lane and leisure swimming and spa facilities, plus 300 fitness classes at six venues across Sheffield. You could try aqua aerobics at Heeley Swimming Pool, a spin class at the English Institute of Sport Sheffield (EISS) or body combat at Hillsborough Leisure Centre. There’s also Pilates at Springs Leisure Centre, HIIT (high intensive interval training) at Concord Sports Centre and swim fit at Ponds Forge International Sports Centre, to name a few. So wherever you work or live, or whatever you enjoy doing, there’s a Fitness Unlimited venue for you. By becoming a member, you can also join in the celebrations for Fitness Unlimited’s 15th birthday! Now one of Sheffield’s biggest sporting success stories,
E
Fitness Unlimited started out back in January 2000 with just three venues, a handful of fitness classes, a health suite and an athletics track. It has gone from strength to strength over the last 15 years, continuing to provide the biggest and best value membership in Sheffield. Having sold approximately 150,000 memberships since its infancy, it is safe to say that Fitness Unlimited has played a major part in making the people of Sheffield healthier and more active. The scheme is operated by Sheffield City Trust, whose primary role is to benefit the health and wellbeing of the people of Sheffield. Its charitable status means that any surplus income generated is ploughed back into facilities across the city. This has resulted in significant investment across Fitness Unlimited venues over the last 15 years. More recent projects include a significant renovation at EIS Sheffield in 2013, the addition of a new gym at Heeley earlier this year, and a more recent revamp at Concord, which boasts the latest Unity Technology. So, whether you just want to tone up or completely change your fitness regime, Fitness Unlimited’s multi-site membership has you covered. Fitness Unlimited members also benefit from a rewards package, which grants up to 20 per cent discount on selected leisure activities, such as ice skating. You can visit the venues as often as you want and take part in as many classes as you like. With so much on offer, the hardest task will be deciding what activity to take up first. Give Fitness Unlimited a go and see for yourself what it has to offer by visiting www.fitnessunlimited.co.uk. Fitness Unlimited Tel: 0114 223 3419 www.fitnessunlimited.co.uk

PROMOTIONGRAPHICA RESIN SURFACES
For a stunning alternative to tarmac, paving or concrete on your drive, you need the help of the experts at Graphica Resin Surfaces.
BEFORE
AFTER
f you are tired of the same old driveway, or if the years of wear and tear have begun to show on your once flawlessly pebbled path, you’ll want an expert who you can trust to get the job done. Graphica Resin Surfaces is run by Tony and Nathan, who have over 22 years’ industry experience between them. Their family-run company has a strong customer focus and they ensure every driveway is completed to the highest standard, priding themselves on offering a quality product at a fair price to each and every client. They also understand the importance of tailoring to the specific needs of each customer. “We often have people with no idea what they want, so the most important thing is to advise and cater to their needs such as budget, easy maintenance and safety aspects,” explains office manager Jamie Miller. “An anti-slip surface is something that older people are often concerned about and we’re here to offer the customers peace of mind.” Graphica's technical surveyors supply you with the information you need, so you can make an informed decision. Their service includes a full refurbishment of your driveway, which involves one of their experienced teams preparing the surface before the resin is laid, which results in existing concrete or tarmac being restored and regulated. Then, by using polyurethane resin combined with a mixture of loose aggregates of your choice, they are bound together – giving the appearance of a loose stone effect, without any movement of stones. The finished product is smooth, environmentally friendly, stronger than concrete and guaranteed up to eight tonnes in weight. As well as being durable, it’s weed resistant and easy to maintain, and – as with all Graphica Resin Surfaces – anti-slip as standard.
I
Although there are many alternative driveway surfaces such as tarmac, block paving or imprint concrete, Graphica truly believe their product is one of the most cost-effective ways of giving your home and garden the finishing touch it needs, without disturbing any existing foundations or adding any waste to the environment. Many of their customers want to extend their existing driveway, which can be done without planning permission, due to the permeable nature of the resin bound system. As members of CheckaTrade.com, they take great pride in what they do and have been checked, vetted and monitored. Their profile can be found at www.checkatrade.com/ GraphicaResinSurfaces. Graphica Resin Surfaces doesn’t just specialise in driveways; their abrasion-resistant rubber crumb is the ideal surface product for any area where there is a risk of falling. They can cover children’s play areas, school sports areas, athletic tracks, tennis and basketball courts, golf tee-off areas, garden paths and boat deck surfaces. For more information, visit www.graphicaresin.co.uk, where you can also take a look at the all new driveway swatcher – which allows you to see how each of the different surfaces and colours look – and read testimonials from the company’s many happy customers. You can also visit www.facebook.com/ Graphica.ResinSurfaces or call 0800 0305 771 for a free, noobligation quote.

BALTIC BEAUTY
Fiona Barber discovers the secrets of a city that has been at the centre of some of the 20th century’s most momentous events. earching for somewhere different for your next mini-break? How about the city where the first shots of World War Two were fired and where, 40 years later, freedom-loving trade unionists set about bringing down the Iron Curtain? OK, so it doesn’t sound like the romantic getaway of your dreams, but the Polish city of Gdansk is packed with potential for weekenders – and with regular, low cost flights from Robin Hood Airport Doncaster Sheffield travelling there could not be easier. And if you’re a fan of grand architecture and lively nightlife you will be in for a very pleasant surprise… The lights of Gdansk city centre were dwarfed by the grandeur of the magnificent train station in view from my hotel room. Arriving just after midnight on a cool Friday, the city was host to a steady hum of partygoers, something that became a faraway thought as I sunk my weary head down onto the crisp white pillow. Well rested and fed after a good night’s sleep and a hearty buffet breakfast in the centrally located Hotel Scandic, it was time to explore what the 1,000-year-old Polish city has to offer. To immerse yourself in Gdansk, some background knowledge of a rich and tragic history helps. For centuries it was fought over by Poles, Germans, Swedes and Russians. Much of Gdansk was destroyed in WWII, but was superbly rebuilt in the aftermath as one of

The magnificent clock at St Mary’s Church
@PulseRMC
Europe’s most beautiful port cities. There are many striking buildings, like the gothic St Mary’s Church. Currently the largest brick church in the world, it features an entrancing astronomical clock, which shows the time and date, phases of the moon, the position of the moon and sun in relation to the zodiac signs and the calendar of saints. Legend has it the clock’s creator had his eyes gouged out so he would never make a clock better than this one. Now that’s commitment. After soaking up the holy artefacts within the church, those with a head for heights can climb the 78-metre tower, gaze down on the city and be rewarded with charming views of the old town. From the decorative grandeur of the church, it was refreshing to browse the city’s terraced dolllike houses and its fountains and statues. I got a taste of romance on the ‘bridge of love’ with its heavily decorated padlock railings, before heading off to refuel with some traditional Polish cuisine at Gdanski Bowke Restaurant. I ate zurek on each day of my visit to Gdansk. And given the chance, I would probably have eaten it every day since. This delicious traditional Polish soup comes in a variety of flavours – and is occasionally topped with a hard-boiled egg – but it is always a unique combination of sour, salty and creamy. This hearty dish is even served in a bread bowl, so after you’ve eaten the soup you can enjoy the soup-soaked bread. Utter genius. We were also offered a popular local appetiser. Certainly not for the devout vegetarian or those with high cholesterol, smalec is predominantly

flavoured pork fat. We slathered a generous layer on a slice of homemade bread, popped a gherkin on the top, and voilà. Besides its cuisine and history, Gdansk is best known for its production of Baltic amber – fossilized tree resin – which made a visit to the Amber Museum a must. Housed in Gdansk’s medieval Foregate building – once home to the prison tower and torture chamber – the multi-storey exhibit delves extensively into the history of Baltic amber and hosts an impressive collection of ‘inclusions’ (the result of bugs or plants being caught inside the amber, something that adds value to the Exhibits in the Amber gemstone). Museum I was fascinated by the diversity of amber and spent some time exploring the displays and creations, which vary from a mini drum kit, to ink wells, a chess board and much more besides. Hypnotised by the beauty of the gemstone, we travelled to the cobbles of St Mary’s Street, known as the street of art and amber. It’s also known as the place where time has stood still for 300 years, because of its rows of traditional terraced houses, which are home to classic ornate gargoyle rain gutters, delicately detailed railings and front stoops. This street gave me a true sense of Gdansk Old Town. Despite the significant sense of history here, Gdansk is also flourishing as a cosmopolitan, innovative city. In recent years there have been dramatic developments to expand entertainment and culture in Gdansk. The PGE Arena, which was originally built for Euro 2012 is now a multifaceted music, sport, food and entertainment venue. On our tour of this huge building we visited the Fun Arena, which is host to various games and activities – and something we had all been particularly giddy about: The Escape Rooms. In this Crystal Maze type venture, we were locked in a room and had to find and solve cryptic clues before moving on to the next room and eventually escaping. Despite our valiant efforts and teamwork, we failed. Nevertheless, it was certainly an entertaining
www.regionalmagazine.co.uk
way to while away a couple of hours. Back into the town centre we were in for a more sophisticated kind of culture, with the newly built £15million Shakespeare Theatre. Despite the name, this is an example of supreme modernism, with 56 lifts that enable the area in front of the stage to be transformed into an Elizabethan-style thrust stage and a 90tonne retractable roof – the only one of its kind in the world – that opens in three minutes to allow for daylight performances in good weather. Although the modern ventures of Gdansk are worlds away from what the old town and history of the city has to offer, in many ways having all these elements makes the city that much more intriguing and provides visitors and locals the best of both worlds. With such rich history it would have been easy for the city to become stuck in the past and out of touch with the world, but instead Gdansk has managed to develop and move with the times while keeping a firm grasp on its past. And because of this, its unusually flavoursome cuisine and quaint beauty, it’s the perfect place to spend a city break.

REEL LOVE
Who said romance was dead? Here are seven of the best Hollywood relationships ever forged on-screen. t has been said that ‘life imitates art’ and never is this more true than on the silver screen. Hollywood doesn't get any more romantic or voyeuristic than those movies that sparked passionate, off-camera love affairs. From epic war films to comic book heroes, this crop of films saw sparks flying more furiously off-screen than on. And while most celebrity rendezvous last about as long as the film première after-party, these Hollywood couples have proven to have staying power both personally and professionally in the fickle world of showbusiness. So whether you’re cosying up on the sofa or cracking open a bottle of vino for one this Valentine’s Day, be inspired by these reel love stories.
I
Swing Shift (1984) Kurt Russell and Goldie Hawn Kurt Russell and Goldie Hawn met while filming The One and Only, Genuine, Original Family Band in 1968, but only began a relationship after they co-starred in Swing Shift. The couple have been together since 1983 – although they haven’t tied the knot – and have raised four children together.
The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air (1990-1996) Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith
To Have and Have Not (1944) Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall "We'll have a lot of fun together." So Humphrey Bogart told his 19-year-old co-star before shooting this masterful war drama. The star had never dated a leading lady and the young actress had never been in a film before, but their relationship became one of Hollywood's most famous love affairs. Despite a 25-year age gap and Bogart already being married, the couple wed in 1945 and stayed together until his death in 1957.
Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith met in 1994 on the set of The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air when Jada auditioned to play Will's girlfriend on the show. She may have missed out on the part but the couple married in 1997 and have two children together, Jaden and Willow, who are fast becoming famous in their own right.
Mr. & Mrs. Smith (2005) Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie One of the more controversial on-set meetings, Brad was married to Jennifer Aniston when he met Angelina on the set of Mr. & Mrs. Smith. The fictional couple who are hired to kill one another morphed into the ultimate real-life super couple, Brangelina. They married last year and are raising six children together.
Dream House (2011) Daniel Craig and Rachel Weisz
Daredevil (2003) Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner Bennifer 2.0 met on the set of Pearl Harbor in 2001 but didn't start dating until 2004, after playing comic book hero and heroine Daredevil and Elektra. During filming, Affleck rescued his co-star from a stunt gone wrong and Garner found her very own superhero. They married a year later and now have three children.
Possibly one of the most secret celebrity love stories, Daniel Craig and Rachel Weisz were friends for years but started dating in 2010 when they co-starred in Dream House. The psychological thriller may have received poor reviews and low box office results but the couple went on to marry, with just four guests attending the private ceremony and the rest of the world oblivious to their romance.

The Place Beyond The Pines (2012) Ryan Gosling and Eva Mendes Hollywood’s golden couple started dating in 2011 when they co-starred in American crime drama The Place Beyond The Pines. Frequently voted as one of the most beautiful and successful A-list couples, Ryan and Eva welcomed a baby girl last year.

BEAT THE BLUES
Don’t let the Christmas hangover get you down. Banish the January clouds with our guide to a cheerful New Year. n 2005, psychologist Cliff Arnall claimed that bad weather, debt and the time lapsed since Christmas – plus the usual back-to-work blues – culminated in the third Monday of January being the most depressing day of the year. Of course, there is absolutely no scientific evidence to support this theory and, though Cliff was named as the author of the report, it was actually a Sky Travel publicity campaign. There’s nothing like a touch of mythical misery to make people

book holidays, eh? The fact remains, however, that January is a glum month. While it’s easy to dispel a myth that claims a certain day is worse than the rest, the post-Christmas blues are hard to shake off completely. This year, don’t fall victim to the trend. We’ve rounded up a few tips to help you start 2015 as you mean to go on – happy and full of energy. So forget the January blues, here’s to the January grooves! (Oh come on, it nearly works…)
WORDS: Stephanie Burns
GO SALES SHOPPING If this sounds like the very last activity that would raise your spirits, don’t be a martyr. Let your family/partner/friends go without you, enjoy a couple of hours alone, and avoid the stroppy teenager routine. For the many others who love nothing more than a bargain, however, this is the brightest ray of sunshine on an otherwise dull horizon. And don’t forget, shopping can also be included in your new year exercise regime as two-and-ahalf hours of dashing round the shops will burn around 385 calories. As if you really needed an excuse…
PRACTISE MINDFULNESS A buzzword in mental wellbeing, mindfulness is currently being touted as the best antidote to a stressful lifestyle. It’s about appreciating the ‘now’ and being present in the moment by being aware of how you think, feel and act. For example, next time you wash your hands, pay attention to the sound of the tap running, how the water feels on your hands and the scent of the soap – it sounds odd but it can really help to refocus your mind. For a more in-depth practice, a four-week online course by The Mental Health Foundation (www.bemindfulonline.com) costs £60 and ‘involves paying attention to our thoughts and feelings in a way that increases our ability to manage difficult situations and make wise choices’.
SOCIALISE
The best way to nurture a bad mood is doing nothing – or checking social media and seeing others having a better time. But, as postfestive bank accounts are notoriously a little peaky – to put it lightly – lavish nights out and weekends away are often last on the agenda. Does that mean you can’t still see friends and enjoy perhaps a more modest activity? Of course not. Grab the last of your Christmas chocolates, a bottle of wine and gather some friends for a night in playing board games or watching a DVD. Granted, it’s not the most glamorous way to spend a Saturday night but it’s fun and it’s free and, at this time of year, you can’t really ask for much more.

BORROW A DOG Spending quality time with playful pooches is proven to lift the spirits – and those without a pet of their own need no longer miss out. National initiative ‘Borrow My Doggy’ has been bringing dog lovers and dog owners together since 2012. Those not able to keep a dog can borrow someone else’s – taking it for walks, feeding it and generally having a lovely time – meaning the dog is happier and the owner needn’t feel guilty about not being able to keep it company throughout the day. It’s a win-win situation. For more information and to get matched with members in your local area, visit www.borrowmydoggy.com.

The Burns Night app (left) and a traditional Burns Night supper (above)
CELEBRATE BURNS NIGHT This often-overlooked Scottish tradition, which takes place on 25 January and celebrates the life and work of poet Robert Burns, is what winters are made of. Comforting food, warming spirits and sharing the experience with friends and family – what better way to spice up the end of a dreary month? There’s even, would you believe, a Robert Burns app available for iPhone and Android. On it you’ll find more than 550 poems and love songs; a useful guide to hosting your Burns supper including recipes, what to drink and what to wear; and a biography detailing just what makes this eminent bard one of history’s greats.

Be honest, when have you ever stuck to one longer than a couple of weeks? If you are looking to lose weight, get fit or quit smoking, start right now. It sounds obvious but there is nothing stopping you making the changes you need to make, besides yourself. Putting it off until a certain date or not trying at all because it’s now the 10th of the month and you planned to start on the 5th makes the whole process seem like more of a big deal than it really is and will set you up to fail. Instead, run up and down the stairs a few times right now, cook a healthier tea tonight or have one less cigarette today. By gradually building up to the full gym membership or strict health plan, you’re more likely to achieve the results you want. Finally, don’t beat yourself up if you don’t stick to your original plan as it will only make you feel worse.

Che’s eldest daughter, Dr Aleida Guevara, dined as a special guest of the Leopold Square venue as part of her visit to the city in December. Cubana’s Adrian Bagnoli said: “Having a visit from Che Guevara’s daughter really is the ultimate accolade for us. The fact that her advisors chose us as the place for her to eat is a real honour. It was a pleasure to welcome her and I hope Cubana’s Havanainspired decor reminded her of home.”

Swim off the stress and those extra few pounds in 2015 Trying to shift that last bit of Christmas weight or simply looking to improve your health? Getting into shape doesn’t have to mean going for a run or a strenuous gym session, as a gentle swim can burn over 200 calories in half an hour. SIV boasts six swimming pools across the city – including those at Concord Sports Centre, Hillsborough Leisure Centre and Ponds Forge – which offer a variety of sessions for fun, fitness, socialising and relaxation. There are many benefits to swimming. As water is about 800 times denser than air, you can work harder and burn more calories, swimming is a low-impact form of exercise that puts little stress on bones and joints, the rhythmic action is calming and can improve psychological well being and it balances blood pressure while normalising pulse rate. Adam proudly displaying his debut novel
MAN OF HIS WORDS Writer, actor, columnist, radio presenter … Adam J. Watts has many strings to his bow, as Stephanie Burns discovers. any 27-year-olds are busy making their mark in their early career, paying off university debts and finding just about enough time to socialise with friends at the weekend. But Adam J. Watts is not just any 20-something. Having gained two university degrees, he now holds down a part time job as a graphic designer, plays for a local cricket team, writes a sports column for a local newspaper, presents a sports show on local radio, and acts and produces for his local theatre company. And that’s not all. Arguably his most challenging venture yet, Adam self-published his debut novel at the end of 2014 after four years of hard work. Moral Compass – the first of a three part series known as The Samuel Beasley Trilogy – tells the thrilling tale of espionage against a backdrop of World War II. And, as Adam explains, it’s the perfect outlet for his vivid imagination.
M
When did you first get the idea to write a novel? “I’ve always had an interest in Second World War history and, around four years ago, I thought I’d see what I could come up with. I did some brainstorming for characters and plot lines and then put it all together. I’ve got quite an imagination!” Have you always been into writing? “Yes. I had an inspirational English teacher at GCSE – Mr Theasby at Yewlands Technology College, now Yewlands Academy – and when we studied a book he’d take on all the different characters and bring it to life, which really helped. I’ve been writing a sports

column for a local newspaper for around five years but haven’t really got any formal training in English literature or writing. My first degree was in design and I actually helped to design the cover for the book. So it’s kind of mine in its entirety.” How long did it take you to write the first book? “It took three to four years, but I was studying to be a teacher of design and technology for my second degree and working part time as well. Without these interruptions, I think it would have taken about a year.” How did you get the book published? “Self publishing is making writing books easier to get into these days. I did some online research, looking for publishing companies with good reviews, and then got in touch with a few. Depending on the responses I got and the ones I liked the sound of, I made a decision and ended up going with New Generation Publishing, a sister company of Legend Press.” What’s the premise of the book? “Part one of the trilogy chronicles the life of the protagonist Samuel Beasley before, during and after World War II. Following the assassination of his mentor, he’s forced into a life of espionage and has to rely on his natural aptitude and some specialist training to get back a stolen technology. “It’s a cat and mouse game between him and a Nazi officer, and there’s a love interest too.”

alternative future because the possibilities are endless. That will probably be the next one after this trilogy, if I do get that chance.”
What did you want to achieve with this novel? “One of the aims of the book/trilogy is to challenge the moral values of the reader via the main character. For example, the decisions he makes along the way and how they affect the final outcome. By the end of book one, I want the reader to be unsure whether Samuel Beasley is still a hero or not.”
What advice would you give to aspiring authors? “Just give it a go! Most Adam (third from left) playing Willie Mossop publishing companies in the classic stage play Hobson's Choice. that I researched said that, Image by Lyn Whitbread as long as my story wasn’t really controversial and it was well done, they’d be happy to publish it. Then, other times I’ll be out shopping or doing something random and I’ll suddenly think of something and need to write it down. With self publishing, time management is a big thing. If I don’t do it, I’ve got no-one pushing me. My representative at the publishers will ask how much I’ve done, but he can’t actually say ‘get it done’”. Did you set out a plan for the book before you started? “I tend to go through the whole story and for each chapter write a couple of paragraphs with ‘in this chapter, such and such will happen’, and then fill out the rest. Sometimes it changes; I’ll do some factual research, find out something that I didn’t know, and then have to redo some parts. It’s better to get it right though.” What feedback have you had so far? “I’ve got a few reviews on goodreads.com and so far I’m holding onto my five out of five rating. It’s all coming together – I just hope it stays positive! I have to wait for the biannual report to tell me how many I’ve sold through Amazon, but I already know I’ve had a few sales in America and Australia.” What is it about writing novels that appeals to you? “I like the freedom to have your characters do and say what you like. I’d be lying if I said there wasn’t a little bit of the main character that wasn’t me. You can be more adventurous through your writing and cover the things that you’d like to do, or things that aren’t possible to do anymore because the period in history has passed. I would never say I’m a wordsmith but I like to spend time on it and I’ll revisit a chapter quite a few times to make sure it’s nice to read, as well as telling a good story.” Are there any other avenues you would like to explore in your novels? “I’m not a big sci-fi fan but I’ve always wanted to write something about an
What is your ultimate dream? “When I first started, my goal was just to get the book out there. I thought that was quite a big thing. Now that it’s out, my aim is to do the other two. Then it would probably be to hope that people enjoy it and that I get some recognition. And, well, you can dream about a film being made of the book, can’t you?” Do you think it would make a good film? “It would be a better film than a stage production. I do amateur dramatics with EPPiC Theatre in Ecclesfield but I’m not sure it would work well on stage because there are a lot of different locations.” How did you become involved with EPPiC Theatre? “I went down three years ago on the off chance and asked if they were looking for new actors and they said they always were, so I decided to give it a go. I’d never done any acting but I thought I’d throw myself into it and see what happened. I’ve done six or seven shows now and have just finished producing The Price to Pay with a fellow actor, David Challenger. I really enjoyed that as we could pick which play we did. I’ve written a couple of plays but it would have been a bit egotistical if I’d have picked one of those!” What themes do you explore with your playwriting? “The first play I wrote for stage was a murder mystery. It’s very Agatha Christie in its style because I’m a big Poirot fan and I love that period of time. It was called Come Hill or High Water because the family’s surname is Hill and they live in a house called High Water. “I then wrote a comedy set in an old people’s home with David Challenger before jumping straight into writing my book. I’ve also just started presenting a Saturday sports show on Penistone FM, 1-5pm.” Have you always been willing to get involved with different things? “Yes, there’s not much I won’t try. I play cricket for a team, and have been treasurer there, and my plan for the new year is to rejoin a badminton club that I used to play at. If people want me to do something I’ll usually say yes. I’m up for anything!”

Honda’s dream machine The inspiration behind every teenage boy’s dream returns – the Honda Civic Type-R. Landing around May, it’ll be the most extreme Type-R ever made, producing at least 276 horses from a 2.0-litre iVTEC turbocharged engine (the first Type-R to incorporate a turbocharged engine). Honda wants this turbo engine to not only attain the ‘high-revving’ characteristics of the much-loved VTEC engines of old, but combine it with real-world demolishing low-end torque. Honda’s targeting the front-wheel-drive Nürburgring record and by the looks of it, it’ll be pretty damn close. Expect a price of around £30,000. Looks to be a cracker.
Viva Vauxhall The Vauxhall Viva is back. Though in this case, it’s in a tidy, compact supermini flavour. Launching in the spring, it’ll come with the same 74bhp 1.0litre three-cylinder unit found in both the Adam and Corsa, and it’ll be mated with a five-speed manual. The chassis has been designed to “provide exceptional safety and class-leading comfort” and it’ll incorporate typical Vauxhall design cues including their ‘blade’ side design and winged chrome bar up front. It’ll be crammed with tech including Apple and Android synching capabilities, ESP, ABS, hill start assist and park assist. Prices are yet to be announced.

New Disco ticks all the boxes As from January, the Land Rover Discovery Sport will be the new weapon of choice for every family undertaking the daily school run – the combination of the badge, the practicality, the economical engines and the build quality will see to that. You maybe thinking: “the Range Rover Evoque sees to that, right?” Wrong. You see, the Evoque doesn’t have seven-seats (unlike the Discovery Sport) and although the Evoque’s interior feels classier, this means you’ll not be worried about your kids smearing it with their muddy shoes or jammy dodgers. Available in two or 4WD variants. Prices start from £32,395.
Alfa has a platform to build on Alfa Romeo hasn’t had a slice of the compact executive saloon market since the 159 discontinued in 2012. They’re planning on taking some of it back with this, the Alfa Romeo Giulia. Expected to go on sale at the end of the year, the Giulia will be rear-driven and will incorporate a number of four and sixcylinder petrol and diesel engines. This will be an important car for the company as its platform and array of engines will be rolled out into future Alfa models within the next five years. No pressure then.
B-Class leads the charge Starting from £31,950 (excluding government grants), the Mercedes-Benz B-Class Electric Drive will be the company’s first crack at a full volume electric car when it goes on sale early in the year. Mercedes state it’ll achieve 142 miles on a single charge from its lithium-ion batteries, which produce 180bhp and 340NM of torque, carving a 7.9 second 0-62mph time. Mercedes say these figures make it the most powerful, fastest accelerating five-seat electric car in its class boasting the greatest theoretical range. Practicality is great with a 510-litre boot, rising to 1,456 litres with rear seats folded. 48 PULSE MAGAZINE
