PROMOTIONSLIMMING WORLD
Slimming World can help you to find a whole new you … just ask successful slimmers Katie and Joanne. KATIE’S STORY
JOANNE’S STORY
Before Katie Holmes’ first child was born, she was a healthy 9st and a size 8. With each pregnancy, her weight slowly grew until she stepped on the scales at 13st 7lb and a size 18. Thanks to Slimming World, she has managed to lose over three stones – and counting – and has seen a massive change in her health. Katie confessed: “I had always cooked homemade meals from scratch, providing the children with their five-a-day of fruit and vegetables, but at night I would eat leftovers and chocolate.” Katie tried various methods of losing weight but found all of them too restrictive as they meant cutting out the foods she loved most. It was only when one of her children described her as 'fat' in a piece Katie is a shadow of her of homework that it former self hit home just how (right) much her night-time binges were affecting her health and she decided to join Slimming World. “When I first nervously walked into group I never dreamed I would find such a nice and friendly atmosphere. In the first meeting, when the plan was fully explained to me, it seemed too easy to do. In my first week I lost 6.5lb and I haven’t looked back since. I find the Food Optimising plan so easy to stick to because I always feel full and I feel so much better about myself. I have also found that my weekly shopping bill hasn’t gone over the normal amount.” Katie went on to discover that she can still make her family favourites – spaghetti bolognese, chilli, curry and even burgers – by altering a few ingredients that make it Slimming World friendly. Katie is so passionate about introducing the plan to others and changing lives that she has just completed her training to become a Slimming World consultant. Her group sessions take place at The Learning Zone on Wordsworth Avenue in Parson Cross (opposite the Asda at Chaucer) and will run each Monday at 9.30am from 25 January.
There are many health benefits to losing weight. And, as Joanne Millward discovered, this even includes easing the pain of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS). After several cortisone injections failed to ease the chronic pain and numbess in Joanne’s hands, she was referred to a consultant surgeon – and was surprised by the advice given. “I was told that I would benefit from losing a stone in weight as this would naturally alleviate pressure on the nerves in my wrists, which would prevent me having to have surgery.” Joanne decided to take the consultant’s advice and was given a two month period to lose the weight. Joanne said: “I knew I needed support and a proper eating plan to follow. I made the decision to join Slimming World as I had heard from friends about an Extra Easy Plan where you could lose weight but not be hungry. “I can honestly say it was the best thing I have ever done. With the support of my friendly consultant and the group, I was able to achieve the target set by the surgeon. I was never hungry; I eat more now than before and it only took me two months to lose my stone. I feel so much better and I can still have my favourite curry and chips whenever I want. “Joining Slimming World has changed my life. I have been taught how to change my eating habits, which I had always thought were reasonable. Losing a stone on this plan has been easy and has saved me having operations on my wrists as I am now pain free. I Joanne has lost can now also wear more than three stones size 12 skinny jeans.”
For more information, contact Katie on 07707 397748.
For more information, call Joanne on 0114 246 2499.

PULSEHEALTH AND FITNESS
Fitbit charge HR wireless activity & sleep tracker £119.95, from John Lewis
NEW YEAR, NEW YOU From stylish technology to the latest superfoods, make sure you’re well-equipped to make your 2016 resolutions last. By Molly McGreevy and Phoebe Seymour. New Year means a new start so many of us vow to be fitter and healthier when January rolls around. But as good as our intentions to eat better and work out more are, we start to lose our way come February. One of the reasons our resolutions fall apart is that health and fitness, like much of modern life, has become a confusing and sometimes overwhelming world. There is a new superfood every week, a different fashionable fitness class being offered each time you enter the gym and at least three news stories a week telling us the latest foods we shouldn’t be eating for fear of causing illness. Here are a couple of ways to stay on track and not get distracted by the health and fitness hype this January.
A
Get tech fit Wearable fitness technology offers a contemporary solution to the baffling world of keeping fit and healthy, by recording everything, from what you eat for breakfast to how you sleep at night, and every hop, skip and jump in between. Fitness trackers are usually worn around your wrist, and connect to an app on your phone. The most basic count your steps then tell you how many calories you’ve burned, whilst higher end trackers can monitor your heart rate, how you sleep and track runs and cycles. Phone apps can be used to enter the calories you’re eating, and
14 PULSE MAGAZINE
use the information you enter to tell you if you’re missing any crucial nutrients from your diet. Most fitness trackers are designed to be sleek and stylish, as opposed to the ugly and cumbersome pedometers that are the technology’s closest predecessor. Some look more like watches, with a display face and chunky strap, whilst others are thinner and more discreet. Users shouldn’t be deceived by their fashionable design though. Many fitness trackers are prepared for all the elements and can withstand everyday use, and some can be used in water so swimmers can track their activities. There is a whole host of free apps available for wearable fitness technology. Some devices have an app specifically tailored to them, and only users of the technology have access to the app. However, there is still a huge choice of fitness apps to choose from. Sports brand Adidas has created miCoach, an app which turns your phone into a personal trainer. miCoach offers free diet and training plans, motivates you as you exercise, and connects with your wearable to build a detailed picture of your fitness regime. With so many free apps available, and wearable fitness trackers becoming easier to use and more fashionable to wear, keeping fit and healthy has never been as stylish as it will be in 2016. As ever, the tough part comes from within. If you don’t have the willpower to change your lifestyle, all those gadgets won’t count for much.

We are constantly hearing contradictory information about the food and drinks we consume. One day we’re told coffee is bad for our stress levels, the next we are told it is a great antioxidant. Who should we believe? Which foods should we eat more of? And which should we cut out altogether? The best way to get around this problem is to educate ourselves with reliable information straight from the nutritionists’ mouths. Reading the back of food packaging can be baffling, so a great book to start with is E for Additives by Maurice Hanssen. MOVIE MEMORIES
Were you among the audiences at Ecclesfield’s long-gone cinema? his month’s photograph is by Cyril Slinn and is taken from Around Sheffield Then & Now by Geoffrey Howse. It depicts Ecclesfield Cinema and The Arundel Arms at the end of Church Street in 1925. The cinema, which seated an audience of 685, was built in 1920 by Michael J. Gleeson and opened the following June. Besides its closure between 1930 and 1932, at which point it reopened with sound, it remained in operation until 1959. If you have any memories of Ecclesfield Cinema that you would like to share, please get in touch. Call Stephanie Burns on 0114 250 6300 or email Stephanie.Burns@ regionalmagazine.co.uk and we will print your comments in the next issue. We would also like to receive your old pictures for Looking Back. If you have any that you would like to share, please send them, along with your name and a short description of the photograph, to Pulse Looking Back, 6 Broadfield Court, Broadfield Business Park, Sheffield S8 0XF. Or you can email them to Stephanie.Burns @regionalmagazine.co.uk. If you would like us to return your photographs, please include your address with the images and we will be happy to post them back.

More recollections of Ecclesfield Grammar School Lynda Almgill (nee Hewling) got in touch after her Ecclesfield-based cousin sent her the November issue of Pulse to say that she and her husband Chris attended the school in 1960 and could recognise some of the teachers. They agreed that the lady behind the head master is geography teacher Silvia Douglas and next to her is Miss Gregory (domestic science). They also identified the last unnamed lady (fifth from right on the second row) as domestic science teacher Cora Bircher. We also received an email from Margaret Tracey, who believed the teacher third from left on the back row, who had been identified as geography teacher Mr Hymers by David Frisby in the December issue, was in fact Mr Malham (Latin). Margaret also identified the unnamed teacher on the far right of the third row as Mr Uttley (maths) and agreed that fourth from right on the third row was Mr Dungworth, who taught languages.

PROMOTIONTANKERSLEY PARK GOLF CLUB
Whether you are a beginner or an experienced player looking for a new challenge, Tankersley Park Golf Club has something for everyone. ave you ever considered joining a golf club? If so, now is the perfect time. With a fantastic location and superb course, Tankersley Park Golf Club (TPGC) has much to entice golfers for the 2016 season. All are welcome at TPGC – including beginners, juniors, ladies, gentlemen, pay-as-you-play, societies and corporate groups – and flexible memberships are available. Contact the secretary for more details. The construction of a new practice facility will commence in the next few months and hopefully be up and running for the winter. This facility will be open to all – the general public, as well as members – and will be a welcome addition to the area for all budding golfers to practise during the dark winter months. The land has a fascinating past, with many uses over the last few centuries. It was an oak forest, a civil war battlefield, a baronial deer park, a coal and ironstone mining area and even a battle tank testing ground before being transformed into a beautifully manicured golf course. Tankersley Park Golf Club was originally designed by Arthur Storey in 1907. It was then re-designed by Frederick George Hawtree, the original founder of golf course architecture company Hawtree Ltd, which is now run by the third generation Martin Hawtree. The company dates from 1912 and has been associated with the building or remodelling of more than 800 golf courses including Royal Birkdale and Sunningdale. More recently, the company has been working with Donald Trump on his new courses, including Trump International.

PULSEIN BRIEF
New year, new start for students Barnsley Sixth Form College’s new campus is now open. The £18m campus provides an impressive gateway into Barnsley and houses all of the college’s A Level provision. First-year student Kenan Hodson, 17, said: “The new Sixth Form will offer a lot more than the old Eastgate and SciTech campuses and I’m interested to see how it all develops.” Second-year student India Birchall, 17, added: “It’s so big, yet looking at the building plans it looks really easy to find your way around. I’m most looking forward to getting to use the great facilities in particular the EnRich auditorium for our drama sessions.” For more information about A Level courses at Barnsley Sixth Form College, call 01226 216 123, email info@barnsley.ac.uk, visit www.barnsleysixthformcollege.co.uk or attend the open day on Wednesday 20 January from 6pm to 8pm.
A musical Christmas treat University Campus Barnsley’s music students held their free Christmas concert, Christmas Shingles, at the Electric Theatre for family, friends and members of the public. Author releases second instalment of trilogy This time last year, we spoke to local author Adam J. Watts about his self-published debut novel, Moral Compass, a thrilling tale of espionage set against the backdrop of World War II. Moral Dilemma, the second instalment of The Samuel Beasley Trilogy, is now available and considers the political scene during both the Sixties and the Eighties. Key character Seb sees himself venturing down a particular path, driven by what he believes to be correct. Along the way he encounters a few familiar faces and is presented with a series of choices that will undoubtedly shape the course of history. The book is available on Amazon for £4.99 (Kindle), £7.99 (paperback) and £13.99 (hardcover).
James focusses on city legends Chapeltown photographer James Shaw is taking portraits of Sheffield legends to raise money for the Sheffield Children’s Hospital. When the project, known as Iconic Sheffield, is complete, the signed, framed portraits will be auctioned at a black tie event and all proceeds will be donated to the hospital. Already on board are Def Leppard, Paul Carrack, Sheffield Eagles, Sheffield Wednesday, Billy Sharp, Reverend and the Makers, Toby Foster and Pete McKee. James is also hoping to feature Jessica Ennis, Michael Palin, Kel Brooke and Sean Bean. James was inspired to raise money for the hospital after his best friend’s son was diagnosed with leukaemia in 2014. It was thanks to the hospital that the young boy survived. GLITZ & GLAMOUR Take inspiration from a decade famed for its bold and brash colours and patterns, writes Phoebe Seymour. ast year’s fashion world was dominated by 1970s style with flares and paisley filling high street stores – and its influence slowly crept into our home décor too. Metallics were another major trend for 2015, with copper accessories taking precedence in the home. This year, interior designers are tipping 1970s-inspired gold as the next big bling. Make a gold item or piece of furniture the centre of attention or mix your
L
metallics by combining mid-century modern brass or 1950s-inspired iron with glamorous gold accessories. Retro house plants are also making a huge come back this year, with seventies style plant pots and swinging baskets adding some glitz to our greenery. So whether you want to introduce a touch of gold, a bit of greenery, some 1970s chic, or all three to your home, these items will give your home a new look this new year.

With more of their quality eco-friendly homes due for completion, Fenwood Estates are looking forward to an exciting year ahead. any Pulse readers will be familiar with Fenwood Estates. Having built Grenoside Point, a select development of six eco-friendly four-bedroom homes just off Yew Lane in 2014, this local development company has already established a reputation in S35 for building quality, environmentally conscious homes. Those who are looking to move in 2016 will no doubt be pleased to hear, then, that Fenwood has even more exciting projects in the pipeline this year. Due for completion in May is Earls Paddock, an exclusive development of just two executive-style, five-bedroom homes in generous plots in the very sought after village of Thorpe Hesley. Graham began his working life as a carpenter and has now been in the construction industry for more than 40 years. Melissa joined the company over 15 years ago as a junior surveyor and is now managing director. Together they have won several awards with the Local Authority Building Control (LABC) warranty provider, including Best Housing Development and Best Sustainable Development, as well as the Doncaster Free Press Design and Build Award. “We are proud of what we have achieved so far and are very excited about the developments we have planned for the year ahead,” said Melissa. “We’re really looking forward to creating more homes for people to build their lives in.” For more information, contact the team on 01302 249550 or visit www.fenwood.com. PROMOTIONKIP MCGRATH
Can you keep a resolution? asks David Kaye of Kip McGrath he new year has arrived. Christmas is a rapidly receding memory as many of us look forward to making plans for the year ahead. Indeed, I had a number of enquiries in December from parents looking ahead. Most of us will be thinking of giving up something, or doing something. Whatever that ‘something’ is, most of us will have a goal. This is important. As the saying goes: ‘You miss 100 per cent of the shots you don’t take’. We are in a very target-driven age. News bulletins frequently refer to them; even the youngest children have them at school. This is all well and good, but imagine a footballer who takes shots and misses them. Now let’s stop thinking of Chelsea or another struggling team and consider how this applies to life in general. I recall, at the beginning of my career, coming up with this wonderful idea to do a museum with a class. Great target! It was meticulously planned but some of the steps were too ambitious, and that’s where it went wrong. It became clear that we would run out of time. I went to my headteacher expecting a dressing down. Instead, I received some valuable advice: ‘Do less. Do it better’. Years later, leadership expert Janina Sweetenham told me about elephants. “How do you eat an elephant?” she asked. Answer: ‘one bite at a time’. I’ve eaten some very big elephants since then.
T
46 PULSE MAGAZINE
Watch out for approaching elephants
She also advised me to beware little elephants on the horizon. This is a useful way to deal with problems when they first appear; otherwise, they will eventually become very big elephants in front of your face which, of course, you can’t eat in one go. Many of you will know children with significant school events in 2016, especially SATs, GCSEs and A levels. DON’T PANIC! Shoot for your goal, beware the little elephants and give yourself enough time to eat them one bite at a time. I wish you all a successful, prosperous and, above all, happy new year. P.S. No elephants were harmed in the writing of this article! David Kaye is the Centre Director for Kip McGrath Centres Sheffield North in Ecclesfield. He is a former headteacher with 25 years’ experience in South and West Yorkshire.
