Year on year success
TANKERSLEY MANOR’S LEISURE AND SPA MANAGER, GEORGE LEWIS, TALKS ABOUT WHAT MAKES HIS JOB SO ENJOYABLE, WHY 2017 WAS THE CLUB’S BEST YEAR YET AND WHY HE’S LOOKING FORWARD TO A NEW YEAR. How did you get into this role?
What has been the highlight?
I worked part-time in the brasserie whilst studying at university. While using the health club facilities, my interest grew and with the help of the hotel and my manager, I gained qualifications relevant to the role of leisure attendant. Three years on, I became health club supervisor and 12 months later, I became spa and leisure manager. The rest, as they say, is history…
To achieve second place in the 2016/17 company spa awards. Our year on year success reassures me that we are working to a successful model and we look forward to continuing that throughout 2018 and beyond.
What does your role entail?
Problem solving – and I love the challenge it brings! Whether it’s a staffing issue or aiming to meet a guest’s expectations, it’s something that really keeps me motivated. What do you enjoy most?
Hearing the service we’ve provided has made a difference makes me proud. We have an exceptional team at the health club and spa. I believe in giving opportunities to those with a good attitude and the business reaps the rewards. So recruiting and developing staff too.
What advice would you give to those wanting to get into this industry?
Whether you’re starting out as a leisure attendant, fitness instructor or beauty therapist, keep an open mind, prepare to be developed, and opportunities will present themselves. Ask questions, absorb as much knowledge as possible and learn from every experience. Join the health club this January and receive £300 of vouchers. 3. Join a boot camp or circuit class If you are new to working out, or just don’t know where to start, join a boot camp or circuit class. These classes will increase the calories you burn, and will help blast fat whilst toning your body with weight training
1. Motivation is key At the start of January breakdown what your specific goals are. For example, you might want to drop a dress size for a wedding in spring or maybe increase your stamina for the Sheffield Marathon. Then set a timescale to your goals and work out what you can do daily, weekly and monthly. But be realistic with yourself. 2. Try fat-blast workouts If you are wanting to lose weight in 2018, you should seriously consider HIIT training. High-Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) is a workout technique that will help you push yourself with intense bursts of exercises followed by short recovery periods. HIIT has many benefits, from increasing your metabolism to burning more calories than normal workouts.
READY TO START? To help you achieve your New Year’s resolutions, we are offering you a five-day trial at Graves Health & Sports Centre, Thorncliffe Health & Leisure Centre or Wisewood Sports Centre. Claim by showing this at the reception or calling one of our centres.

Get on track MAKE GOOD ON YOUR INTENTIONS BY CHOOSING RESOLUTIONS THAT ARE REALISTIC AND ACHIEVABLE, WRITES PHOEBE SEYMOUR. very January, we set ourselves resolutions with the best of intentions. And yet by February, most of us start to slip back into our old ways. Last year, Bupa published a poll based on 2,000 British people which found that out of those who said they would be setting a new year’s resolution for 2017, half were not confident they would stick to it. With this kind of attitude, it’s no surprise we fail to keep them. So what is it about our resolutions that leaves us feeling as though they are unattainable? Bupa found that around one in five people also admitted to setting overly ambitious and potentially unsustainable goals, while psychology professor Peter Herman and his colleagues have identified what they call the ‘false hope syndrome’, meaning our resolutions tend to be significantly unrealistic and out of alignment with our internal view of ourselves and so our minds reject them. From losing weight to saving money, each resolution requires us to change our behaviour, which ultimately means changing our mind-sets.
E
Here are some tips to help you keep your mind on track and to help make your resolutions more achievable this year. 12 Pulse | www.pulsemag.co.uk
BE REALISTIC If your resolution is too ambitious, it will be unrealistic to achieve. Your chances of success are much greater when you channel all your energy into changing just one aspect of your behaviour. So rather than vowing to lose weight and cut out drinking, concentrate on lowering your calorie intake and doing more exercise – and allow yourself the odd glass of red from time to time. Diets are about everything in moderation, and the same goes for your goals. BE SPECIFIC The more specific you can be, the more you can break your resolution down into smaller, more manageable goals. Another thing which tends to happen with non-specific goals is that they are easier to put off and you’ll be tempted to keep moving your goal posts. Instead of saying, ‘I want to lose weight this year’, say ‘I want to lose two stone this year’ so you will have a clear target and know when you have successfully met it. @PulseRMC
FEATURE
RECORD IT
When it comes to our resolutions, many of us find it much easier to talk the talk, than we do committing to the walk. By recording your goal, you make a conscious commitment to working toward achieving it. Write down your resolution or even make a chart where you can track your progress regularly and place it somewhere it can easily be seen such as above your desk where you work, on your bathroom mirror or on your kitchen fridge. DON’T GIVE UP
Finally, if you do come up against some obstacles or fail to meet your short-term goals, don’t beat yourself up about it, and most importantly, don’t let it discourage you.
MEASURE IT
Another reason the resolution ‘I want to lose two stone’ works so well is that it can be tracked and regularly measured. Goals that have deadlines are also a great way to motivate you. ‘I want to lose two stone by my son’s wedding in July’ is therefore a more effective measurement of your success, while, ‘I want to lose four pounds each month’ is even better, as it can be measured regularly and in the short-term – just remember to keep it realistic. MAKE IT EXCITING
People are often put off their resolutions because they can feel like a chore. You may happily tuck into a bowl of vegetables and quinoa for a day or two, but after two weeks of eating the same meal, not so much. If you are aiming to eat healthily, create a varied and interesting menu. The same applies for long-term goals. Instead of saying, ‘I want to save money’, adding a reason such as, ‘so I can take my children to Disneyland’ gives you something positive and specific to look forward to.

Shockwave therapy is available at Kinetic and can help reduce pain and increase circulation
No pain – all to gain WITH OVER 20 DIFFERENT PRACTICES UNDER ONE ROOF, YOU ARE SURE TO FIND THE THERAPY THAT IS RIGHT FOR YOU AT KINETIC. hether you are a sporty type striving to improve your performance or are trying to recover after an injury or accident, the number of therapies and treatments on offer can be bewildering. But at Kinetic in Ecclesfield, with over 20 different practices available under one roof, you are sure to find the therapy that is right for you. “Our philosophy is to help every client to be pain free, says sports therapist, Gayle Cotton. “After an initial consultation, we will discuss the best course of action to tackle your particular problem. Gayle opened Kinetic in June 2013 and has worked as a therapist for over 20 years. In this time, she has worked with many sports stars including high-profile boxers and local teams such as the Sheffield Steelers and Rotherham United Football Club. She is joined at Kinetic by sports therapists Jess Beck and Tom Pinder, as well as osteopaths, Emily Coulthard-Jones and Nick Brown. Though sports therapy is sports focussed, it can help people with a range of musculoskeletal conditions. Osteopathy meanwhile, has a holistic view of the body and is based on the principle that the wellbeing of a client depends on their bones, muscles, ligaments and connective tissues all working smoothly together. If you think osteopathy may be for you, ask Kinetic about a free 15-minute consultation. Foot practitioner, Jessica Carr has also recently joined the team and will be offering

a foot health MOT for just £25 (saving of £5) throughout January. This includes nail care, removal of hard skin, treatment of corns/callouses and a skin softening massage. What’s more, Kinetic offers a wide range of innovative technological treatments to help you feel better from head to toe. The centre is only one of three in Sheffield to offer Shockwave Therapy. Originally used in hospitals to treat kidney stones, it sends radial pressure waves (RPW) through the body to reduce pain and increase circulation. You may be recommended Shockwave Therapy if you suffer from plantar fasciitis, tennis/golfers elbow or Achilles tendinopathy. Neuro-Muscular Activation Therapy (NMA) is another revolutionary piece of technology, which identifies the way your body moves and whether you are moving incorrectly. By re-activating the neural pathways to the body’s muscles, this treatment
helps you achieve a more efficient movement, while reducing pain and injury. However, if you are a golfer looking for a more specialised service, Titleist Performance Institute (TPI) golf screening is a system used by most top professional golfers around the world. Gayle uses 16 functional tests to identify any limitations that may be preventing you from achieving an effective and consistent swing. She then uses hands-on therapy and exercise prescription to correct your posture and movement and to help you become the best golfer you possibly can. Furthermore, Kinetic offers a light and airy studio space with specialist instructors on hand to provide small group Pilates classes and rehab therapy. This ensures every client gets a safe and hands-on service. There are even men only and sports specific Pilates classes as well as a new ski/snowboard course due to start this month. See their timetable below to find out about the wide range of specialist classes Kinetic offers. So whatever your condition and whichever therapy you are interested in, you will find them all under one roof, along with a dedicated team of specialists, at Kinetic. “RMC Media has an excellent record of growth in the development of local magazines and a range of impressive books, but they also had a local knowledge and understanding of business and politics in the Sheffield area which was particularly valuable in building a structured text. As we began to discuss the possibility of working together on a book, their emphasis on quality and a professional approach to layout and design in a book coincided with my own, and the end-product is exactly what I had hoped for.” @PulseRMC

VALENTINE’S DAY
NOT ALL COUPLES RELISH A ROMANTIC CANDLE-LIT MEAL. IF YOUR PARTNER IS AN ADVENTURE SEEKER, ANIMAL LOVER, HISTORY BUFF OR FOOD FANATIC, HERE ARE SOME ALTERNATIVE VALENTINE’S DATE IDEAS THAT THEY ARE SURE TO LOVE. BY HANNAH SANDERS.
Wacky Valentine’s Day Get trapped in a room, and try to break out of it Solving clues and finding your way out of a room is becoming a popular group activity. So grab the couples that like a challenge and take on some of Sheffield’s escape rooms (www.thegreatesapegame.co.uk). No matter if you win or lose, it’s sure to be fun for all involved and you can finish the night with pizza and beers. Drive each other up the wall For the active types, or those who simply want to try something new, head to the nearest indoor climbing wall (www.climbingworks.com). Once you’ve mastered the technique, and if you enjoy a little friendly competition, race each other to the top. For those who are more experienced, take a trip out to the Peak District to do some outdoor bouldering. Finish the afternoon off with a picnic nestled between the
hills (if it’s warm enough), or simply head to the nearest pub. Get competitive If you and your partner are up for some friendly competition, then why not shoot some pool, play a round of crazy golf or even a game of ping-pong? If these aren’t up your alley, then try The Treehouse, board game café (www.treehousessheffield.com) where you can play some classics games like Cluedo or monopoly while enjoying a meal and of course a tipple or two.
Have the purrr-fect date If your partner has a soft spot for a furry feline friend, then what better way to show you care then by organising a trip to Tabby Teas cat café? This cat haven, near the city centre, is home to 12 rescue cats and provides the perfect relaxing environment to while away the afternoon. Head over to their website (www.tabbyteas.co.uk) to book online. Treat your other half to a day filled with purr-licious food and drink while enjoying the company of not one, or two but a room filled with your favourite four legged pals.
@PulseRMC
Cookery class If you both love cooking and want to learn a new skill, why not book yourselves in for a cookery class this Valentine’s Day? It’s a great way to expand your palates and you can learn anything from bread making and authentic Indian or Thai cooking right through to chocolate making. Take away everything you’ve learnt and whip up your partner a meal to remember. Go scavenger hunting If you are feeling ambitions, then have a go at planning a scavenger hunt. Leave notes or gifts hidden away at places that you went to on special dates, or that you both share a significant memory of. LOOKING BACK
A blockage on Boardhill
THE CAMERA DOESN’T LIE – WE DON’T GET WINTERS LIKE WE USED TO… ontinuing our Stocksbridge in winter theme from last month, we look at two more photos from the past in which locals are seen battling the elements. When it snows, it always settles thicker and faster in the north of Sheffield, but the weather nowadays is nothing compared to this. Here is a photo showing locals digging their way out of the snow, taken from The Archives Photographs Series book, Around Stocksbridge: The Second Selection, compiled by Stocksbridge and District History Society. The accompanying caption reads: “Here is a sample of what the weather can hold for our region. This is a scene on Boardhill in 1933. The snowfall caused the road to be blocked and the Dog and Partridge to be cut off for three weeks. The task of manually clearing the snow must have been arduous, but warm work, judging by the number of coats hanging on the fence!” Located some six miles outside of Stocksbridge on the A628, the Dog and Partridge is still going strong today. Situated on the old medieval salt way route, this isolated inn has a history that can be traced back to the Elizabethan period. It was originally a farmhouse and alehouse, supplying shelter and refreshment for travellers crossing the hostile moors of the Pennines. Previously known as Border Hill House and owned by the Gothard family, the inn became known as the Dog and Partridge when it received its first license in 1740. Coming up to the building’s 140th anniversary, this photo of men working in cold conditions at St John’s Church is all the more relevant at this time of year. Also taken from

Around Stocksbridge: The Second Selection, the caption reads: “‘The Deepcar Workers’ poised for action in St John’s Church in Deepcar. The church was built in 1878 but obviously had no central heating installed at that time for the men in the picture are chiselling out holes to accommodate the pipes, which are still there today. Gas fittings were installed in the church in 1885, courtesy of Samuel Fox.” Do you have any more information about the heavy snow fall of 1933 in the Stocksbridge area or know any of the men who worked on St John’s Church in Deepcar? If you can tell us any more about these photos, get in touch using the details below.

THINK NEON, NOVELTY AND NATURAL FOR YOUR ILLUMINATIONS IN 2018. BY PHOEBE SEYMOUR.
n 2017, there was an explosion of playful, on-trend lighting and as we swing into a new year, this style is only getting stronger – not to mention quirkier. Last year was the year that brought you the industrial, exposed lightbulb and the copper cage lampshade. Along with old school, cinema-style light boxes and the rise of neon signs, they will continue to be the must-have items for your home over the next 12 months. You will also see fashionable motifs incorporated into lamps and neon signs such as flamingos and pineapples – the more colourful the better. But for those looking for something more neutral, you will find plenty of glowing metallic and wooden signs to give your suburban home a rough and ready city loft look for 2018.

MOTORING
TAKE FULL AD-VANTAGE Say hello, everyone, to the new 911 killer from Aston Martin – the Vantage. The Aston Martin Vantage is the baby in the range, the small agile coupe with the personality of an excitable dog. The Vantage has an all-new futuristic look separating it from the rest of the Aston Martin line-up, taking design cues from the Aston Martin Vulcan track car. As Aston Martin shares a partnership with Mercedes, it’ll be powered by the same 510hp 4.0-litre biturbo V8 found in the Mercedes AMG GTS. This produces a 0-62mph time of 3.5 seconds and a vmax of 195mph. Power is delivered through a eight-speed ZF automatic transmission via the rear wheels. Deliveries are expected to begin in the second quarter of 2018.
WHAT SHOULD YOU BE DRIVING IN 2018? JORDAN CUTFORTH HAS SOME ROAD-WORTHY ADVICE.

HOT STUFF
Say hello everyone to the all-new Jeep Compass – Jeep’s attempt to make the SUV segment its own. Starting at £22,995, the Compass is a great way to enter the SUV market. Upon its arrival in February 2018, there’ll be two petrol and three diesels to choose from. Petrol units are a 140hp 1.4-litre turbo and a 170hp 1.6-litre turbo. Diesels are a 120hp 1.6-litre unit and a 2.0-litre motor with either 140hp and 170hp. Transmissions available are a sixspeed manual or a nine-speed automatic with either two-wheel or four-wheel drivetrains. Four equipment levels: Sport, Longitude, Limited and Trailhawk. Standard equipment includes 16-inch alloy wheels, LED tail lights, leather steering wheel, air-con and cruisecontrol. Higher specs include larger alloy wheels, Apple CarPlay and keyless go.
Want your hot hatch to be fast, mad and super exclusive? Then look no further, the Seat Leon Cupra R has all your needs covered. Out of the 799 models that are due to be built worldwide, just 24 will be landing in UK based dealerships, each with a price tag just shy of £35,000. Over the ‘ordinary’ Cupra, this R has various tweaks both technically and visually. Under the skin we have a new steering system, modified camber angles on the front axle, four piston Brembo brake callipers and a retuned exhaust system with an even racier note. The interior is upgraded over the Cupra, so too is the exterior. A six-speed manual transfers the power to the front wheels from its 306hp motor.

Let’s go crazy If you’re looking for mind-bogglingly rapid car that’s as mad as a butcher’s dog then look no further than the Lotus Exige Cup 430. The Exige Cup 430 is the “wildest incarnation” of the brand’s two-seater point-to-point racer. Compared to the previous model – the Cup 380 – the 430 has 55 extra horsepower totalling 430hp. It produces 220kg of maximum downforce and compared to the Exige Cup 380, the 430 produces the same amount of downforce at 100mph than this car did at its top speed. With a weight of 1,056 kg and 407hp per tonne, this monster takes 3.2 seconds to hit 60mph and can hit 180mph. This car is on par with the Porsche 911 GT3 and Mercedes AMG GT-R.
