Twenties glamour ART DECO IS BACK. MAKE SURE YOUR 2019 IS FILLED WITH SMOOTH LINES AND GEOMETRIC SHAPES, WRITES RHIANA HUGHES, 018 was the year of Hygge, terrazzo tiles, earth tones and indoor plants, and if these are the looks you’ve invested your hardearned time and money into over the past year there’s no need to start from scratch, especially not if you find yourself inspired by one of 2019’s hottest trends. Art Deco interiors are coming back in a big way this year. One of the most opulent and glamourous periods in design history, you’ll be seeing the style pop up in everything from tables and chairs to lighting and larger furniture pieces. Smooth lines and geometric shapes work beautifully with silvers and golds, while lighting and mirrors open up any space. These designs could well motivate you to give your whole home an overhaul, however there are plenty of pieces that would make the perfect addition to any existing interior.

New year, new you DO YOU HAVE WHAT IT TAKES TO MAKE A CHANGE TO YOUR LIFESTYLE? CHRIS WILSON LOOKS AT FIVE OF THE MOST COMMON NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTIONS. f you went to a New Year’s Eve party this year the odds are you will have come across more than one person planning to change their lives for the better in 2019. There is not a lot of logic behind the idea of New Year resolutions. There’s is no particular reason why the willpower we need to make that change in lifestyle will suddenly appear on 1 January and stay with us throughout the year. Still, everybody’s got to start some
I
time, and if you were one of those people draining a final glass of your favourite tipple or sucking furiously on one last cigarette as the chimes of midnight sounded, here’s to you for thinking so positively. And even if you didn’t put a red circle around 1 January in the diary, it’s not too late to strengthen the sinews and make at least one change for the better. Here are five of the most common resolutions – and some ideas about how to realise them.
Declutter your home There are few things more demoralising than waking up to a home full of clutter. If every available surface in your living space is full of ‘stuff ’ it’s time to fight back before it becomes overwhelming. As with many successful resolutions, the key is to start small. Make sure you have a clear identity for each room so you know exactly what you want to keep and where you want to put it. And if it really is a big job then it’s important to set targets that show immediate success. Sort out a cupboard or drawer or box room, identify the things you no longer need then recycle, give them to charity or put them in the bin. Do not ‘put them in the garage’... that’s just transporting the problem form one room to another. Set aside half an hour a day and you’ll be amazed at how quickly that clutter subsides and your living space grows! www.houseandgarden.co.uk/article/howto-declutter-your-life
Manage your money
Lose weight This will perhaps be the most longed-for change for many of us as we try to make up for the indulgence that saw us wolfing down all sorts of unhealthy treats and piling on the pounds over the festive season. You’ll come across many ‘miracle diet’ claims but before you splash out on the latest celebrity-driven DVD and submit yourself to a brutal regime of cabbage soup and bananas, the NHS has some excellent advice about how to plan your weight loss. Join the four million-plus people have downloaded the NHS 12-week weight loss plan, which is designed to help you lose weight safely – and keep it off. Going steady seems to be the key – long-term changes to diet will result in a steady eight loss with the practical aim of losing 0.5kg to 1kg a week (1lb to 2lb). www.nhs.uk/live-well/healthy-weight/start-the-nhs-weight-loss-plan/ 18 www.rmcmedia.co.uk
On a certain day in January the credit card bills arrive – and a significant number of us will open the envelopes and panic at the prospect of paying those Christmas bills. If this is a familiar scenario for you, it’s time to take control of your finances and make sure you don’t get into such a tight spot financially again. Easier said than done, and it’s hard to break that ‘spend, spend, spend’ mentality if you love a bargain. But free, independent help is available and if you take the time to manage your money it can help you stay on top of the bills all year round and save £1,000s in the process. Take a methodical approach to setting up a budget, paying off loans and credit cards and setting a savings goal and you’ll be in control of your budget. The Money Advice Service is an organisation established with cross Government party support, that provides free and impartial advice on money and financial decisions to people in the United Kingdom. www.moneyadviceservice.org.uk

Learn to cook/take time to cook more Here’s a resolution that not only allows you to develop a fantastic skill, it also has a positive impact on anyone who is also looking to lose weight or manage their money better. Many of us know the basics of cooking but fall out of the habit as a busy work life kicks in. If you feel drained after a long day at work, can you really be bothered to
cook, especially when there are so many takeaway or frozen dinner options? Well, everyhing takes a little effort but the rewards when you do more cooking and eat less pre-prepared food are manifold. If you really are going back to basics start by boiling or poaching an egg, or perhaps by chopping an onion and a few peppers and whipping up an omelette.
Before you know it you’ll be cooking pasta, baking potatoes and roasting chickens. You’ll use much less salt and fat than in the takeaway versions of your home-cooked meals, the true taste of the food will shine through and you’ll have a small fortune too. www.bbcgoodfood.com/howto/guide/25skills-every-cook-should-know
Stay off social media It’s addictive, it keeps you awake at night and leaves you bleary-eyed and exhausted before the day has even begun. Yes, staring at our smartphones and tablets has got us hooked good and proper. We’ve become all-too-adept at multitasking. Whether we are talking to friends, watching a film or eating our dinner, that invasive blue screen is a constant companion. It may seem harmless but if you find yourself going to bed later and later, insisting you need just one last glance at the latest breaking news or the latest trending photos of cute cats, or stalking old school friends you haven’t spoken to in decades on Facebook, you’ve got a problem. Time to restore some order: it’s been suggested that upwards of 30 per cent of millennials are quitting social media and feeling happier as a result. Dare you follow suit? www.nhs.uk/news/mental-health/internet-addiction

"I've always struggled with my weight and never enjoyed going to the gym, I've done various fad diets and joined a number of different gyms but never actually went. I decided to join Tone House after reading up about it and I'm glad I did! I actually enjoy going to Tone House. It easily fits in with my working hours and it isn’t boring. The quick 30 minute workout is great. As it's a ladies only gym it doesn't feel like other gyms, it has a friendly and calm atmosphere, the staff are lovely and keep check on your progress. I'd recommend it to anyone wanting to get active and lose weight.”

New year results – not resolutions he party season is over and 2019 is here. The top three resolutions each year are to exercise more, lose weight and eat healthier – sound familiar? They sound so simple, yet each year most people have to admit defeat. Make this year different with these three tips and win 2019!
T
1. Don’t do it all If you try to take on too many ‘lifeimprovements’ in one go, none will succeed. Cutting out sugar, chocolate and caffeine all at once is a big ask. Start small, pick one thing, nail it and then consider what else you can achieve. 2. Make it easier Humans are creatures of habit, so breaking bad habits is about replacing them with good ones. For example, go to
the gym on the way home from work. And make it as easy as possible to embed the new habit – lay your gym kit out the night before so finding it when you’re in a rush doesn’t become a reason not to go. 3. Do it together The best tip is to not take on your resolutions alone. Find a friend who wants to achieve the same goal and do it together. You’ll be more motivated and it will give you a chance to catch up with a mate. If your goal is to lose weight we’ve got you covered. Ditch the excuses and join one of our gyms in 2019. Refer a friend and get up to a month FREE on your membership. Find a Places Leisure centre near you at www.placesleisure.org.

RETROSPECTIVE
Looking back 2018 WAS A BUSY YEAR. WE MET SOME INTERESTING PEOPLE AND HEARD SOME INCREDIBLE STORIES. CHRIS WILSON LOOKS AT SOME OF THE HIGHLIGHT THAT MADE THE LAST 12 MONTHS SO SPECIAL.
January We began the year with the inspirational tale of Gordon Harrison who was diagnosed with chronic and progressive lung disease leaving him breathless and relying on a home oxygen machine. His grandchildren, Chay (nine) and Fallon (six) raised £2,000 with a sponsored swim for Sheffield Hospitals Charity to help fund the Sheffield Interstitial Lung Disease (ILD) Support Group, which had supported Gordon and his wife Lynn throughout his diagnosis and care. Gordon said: “I could not be more proud of Chay and Fallon. The idea of doing something to support me and the support group was exclusively theirs.”
March Cycling fever was in the air as we previewed The Magnificent Seven race which was set to start and finish in Bradfield as part of The Outdoor Image courtesy City Weekender. A cross Alex Whitehead / SWPix between a sportive and a hill climb, the race would see 130 cyclists battle seven of Sheffield’s toughest ascents. Event organiser Marc Etches said: “The route really showcases Sheffield as The Outdoor City and the riders will be treated to some spectacular views at the top of every climb, especially the highlight of this year’s route - the Cote de Bradfield.” 40 www.rmcmedia.co.uk
February Love came to Stocksbridge with the welcome news that shopping destination Fox Valley was licensed by the local authority to hold wedding ceremonies and civil partnerships. In celebration, we looked back at two of the most high profile weddings from Stocksbridge’s past. We met The Waltons from Co-op Row at Deepcar on the occasion of daughter Norah’s wedding to Thompson Jagger on Boxing Day 1907. Fast forward nine years, and we saw another of the Walton clan, George Junior, marrying Amelia Dorcas Marsden in 1919.
April All sporting eyes were focused on The Crucible in Sheffield for the World Snooker Championships and we paid a call on Simon Barker whose job consists of creating snooker tables for clients based anywhere between Star Snooker Academy in Shiregreen and China. We learned that over his 34-year career Simon, head of Barker Billiards, had worked on tables for some of the biggest names in the sport including Stephen Hendry, Ronnie O’Sullivan and Ding Junhui as well as installing tables for television shows such as The Price Is Right, Darling Buds of May, and at Wentworth Woodhouse for the film adaptation of David Walliams’ Billionaire Boy.
RETROSPECTIVE
May Bradfield Parish Council paid tribute to the local heroes who have made an outstanding difference with its annual Citizens Awards. Among those to receive their moment in the spotlight were Dot Russell, who received the Special Recognition Award for her voluntary services to Stannington library. Dot was the librarian for many years and is well known in the village. When she found out the library was due to close, Dot did not hesitate to offer her help, knowledge, skill and rapport with adults and children to ensure the library would not just survive but thrive.
June Summer was in the air and all eyes were on Hillsborough Park as we previewed Tramlines. Sheffield’s premier music festival celebrated its 10th anniversary with a new venue and a line-up of local heroes, big names and unknowns. Former Oasis star Noel Gallagher was the big headlining act and Sheffield band Reverend and the Makers were also set to make waves on main stage. Main man Jon McClure was also curating the Leadmill Stage on Hillsborough Park. “I’m very excited to be bringing the best new music to Tramlines,” he said.
July An increasing number of people are enjoying the buzz of planting their own fruit and veg and we went to see some keen gardeners at Morley Street Allotments in Walkley. We visited when the allotment was at its peak and were blown away by towering runner beans, bundles of courgettes and tomatoes, gooseberries, loganberries and tayberries. With their on-site shop, plant sales and newly-built greenhouse we discovered a strong sense of community. “Everyone comes down on a set day and works together on the land,” said allotment enthusiast John Newman.
August As the summer heatwave continued we strapped on our walking boots and headed for Stocksbridge after it was named as one of Britain’s best walking neighbourhoods by The Ramblers. Dave Pickergill, secretary for Stocksbridge Walkers Are Welcome, told us that after living in Stocksbridge for 30 years, he continues to be amazed by the beauty of his home town. “Ewden Valley is really nice. One could describe it as the Switzerland of Yorkshire,” he said.
September A famous name from the past loomed in September when the life of Lady Mary Montagu, a prominent figure who helped change the course of medical history, was celebrated as part of the Heritage Open Days Celebrating Extraordinary Women event. Lady Mary, who had strong links with Wortley Hall, noticed the ways Turkish people were protecting their children from smallpox and brought these methods back to Britain, introducing a new type of inoculation that eventually became widely accepted. An obelisk was erected at Wentworth Castle in Stainborough to commemorate her life and achievements.
November The strong bonds between a football team and its local community were celebrated as we discovered how fundraisers from Wisewood Junior FC reacted to a tragedy and came together to raise £3,500 for three defibrillators in the area - one each at the football sites on Back Lane, Loxley and Ben Lane, Wisewood and also at The Village Store, Stannington. Club chairman Steve Shepherd said: “Hopefully we will never have to use them but it is good to know they are there and all players, officials and spectators will have the benefit.”
October The problems of loneliness and isolation were placed under the spotlight as we met the Age Better in Sheffield team as they developed a range of projects and ‘toolkits’ to help end loneliness and isolation. Hannah Thornton of South Yorkshire Housing Association told us: “The toolkits are all about giving people that lightbulb moment of ‘wow, if that’s what is out there, then I can get involved and change my life.”

December
With winter walks during the festive season in mind we focused on the muchloved paths around two reservoirs with walks from Bradfield around Agden and Damflask. We also looked at the first rate food and drink options from pubs and cafes on these short circular routes, ideal for family outings involving young children, pushchairs and anyone who just wants a quick blast of fresh air. www.rmcmedia.co.uk 41

The new cellar bar
Out with the old and in with the new THE WISEWOOD INN HAS A NEW OUTLOOK FOR 2019. erched on the edge of the Loxley Valley, The Wisewood Inn makes for an ideal place to while the night away with a tipple or two, or the perfect spot for hungry walkers to take a well-earned break and enjoy a hearty home-cooked meal. The Wisewood Inn has always been popular with locals, and the Wisewood team are constantly looking for ways to make sure that their customers are provided with the best possible service and experience, each time they walk through the doors. Having recently updated their website, the latest improve-

ment they’ve made is to their downstairs bar area. After six weeks of major refurbishment, Wisewood Inn’s sleek new modern cellar bar is now open for business, and they’re excited for their customers to pop by and see the end result, hoping that you’ll love it just as much as they do. Having worked hard with their contractors, Eclipse Displays, to make their vision come to life, the new cellar bar has exceeded all expectations. The main downstairs bar was taken completely back to its bare bones, and new underfloor heating and a cosy open fire have made sure it’s the place to be during these chilly winter months. Of course it’ll be a popular destination when (or if) summer rolls back around too, and they’ve also updated the old outdoor area to make sure we can all enjoy their stunning views over the Loxley Valley. The Wisewood Inn wanted to create the perfect environment for couples and groups to have a relaxing
drink or two, offering a wider selection of beers, gins, rums and whiskies, the ideal place to give something new a try – not that most of us need any persuading. The pub has one of the largest selections of cask and keg ales in the area, featuring offerings from breweries in and around Sheffield, as well as from all over the UK. The Wisewood Inn also offer three beers on tap from their very own on-site brewery, all available for just £2.70. The room will be open Thursday to Sunday for regular events such as gigs and themed or gourmet food evenings, to customers aged 18 and over. The cellar will also be available for private bookings and events for all ages, but make sure you act fast if you’d like to host an event at the Wisewood Inn, as their bookings for the year ahead are already on the increase following fantastic feedback on the refurbishment. INTERVIEW
He’s one of our own HE’S BEEN DUBBED ‘THE MAN WITH THE GOLDEN VOICE’ BUT WE JUST LIKE TO THINK OF HIM AS A SHEFFIELD LEGEND. RICHARD ABBEY TALKS TO PAUL CARRACK ABOUT HIS NEW ALBUM, TOUR AND MORE.
INTERVIEW
fter 50 years in the music business playing with the likes of Squeeze, The Smiths, The Pretenders, BB King, Eric Clapton and Mike and The Mechanics, you wouldn’t think that Paul Carrack would get intimidated too easily. He’s the first to admit he usually doesn’t – “I’m Sheffield born and bred so I’m not easily intimidated!” he tells me – but a chance collaboration on his latest album, These Days, did put him on edge ever so slightly. The man in question is Steve Gadd, a renowned drummer, percussionist and session musician whose long list of collaborations includes Simon and Garfunkel, Steely Dan and James Taylor amongst many, many others. Steve was on a European tour with Chick Corea and was only in London for three days – so Paul seized his chance. “He’s an absolute legend. He can play anything you want to throw at him but I
A

have to say he’s the most humble, supportive musician you could hope to find. He’s just a genuinely a lovely guy.” This album, Paul’s 17th solo album, came together a little differently to the way he usually works, largely due to the availability of Steve. “I started doing this the normal way, which is me writing the songs and doing a bit of everything,” explains Paul. “But there’s another way of doing it which is to bring in great players and trying to get a bit of chemistry going – and that’s not a euphemism! – and that’s what we attempted to do with this album. “We got Jeremy Meek, who is a Sheffield boy and has been in my band for 20 years, and Robbie McIntosh, great guitar player, he’s played on a couple of my albums. We did 12 basic tracks in three days.” Legendary saxophonist Pee Wee Ellis also added the album’s horn section and
Paul also collaborated with former Squeeze bandmate Chris Difford, who wrote the lyrics for five tracks. These Days is grown-up pop music made by, and for, people who’ve had the ups and downs that life unfailingly provides. “It’s about getting to an age, and appreciating what you’ve got,” says Paul. “I hope it will resonate with people who are going through the same stuff. It’s not being frightened of it, and just trying to enjoy it.” Much of the album strikes a glass halffull, pensive mood about the long road travelled and the adventures still to come. Paul sounds as composed as he’s ever done; after five years touring with Eric Clapton, could a bit of his influence rubbed off too? “Yes, I think so,” Paul says. “It’s always hard to quantify but as a musician, subliminally, you do pick things up. Eric’s a fantastic artist with fantastic integrity and
INTERVIEW
he doesn’t compromise. I’m not chasing a hit or a fancy pop production, it’s a pretty honest, organic kind of record.” Reaction has been good. Reviews have been positive and his fans have been 100 per cent behind it. It’s also had over one million streams on Spotify, something Paul has found difficult to get his head round. “I can’t believe it but it’s true, because I’ve got the numbers in front of me,” he beams. But there is one thing that has got Paul’s back up. Just a little bit. “The one fly in the ointment is that Radio 2 don’t get it. That was a bit of a slap in the face,” Paul muses. “It’s a shame because Radio 2 is big numbers, a lot of people listen to it, and it lets people know you’re still around and you’re out on tour and all that stuff. “But they’re going for a younger thing now. It’s not been a natural shift, it’s like it’s come from above, they’ve decided it’s
not diverse enough, it’s not young enough, it’s not this that or the other… they’re trying to get 35 year olds and upwards. I’m thinking, ‘are they f---ing joking?’.” Paul will be starting 2019 touring the album, stopping off at Sheffield’s City Hall on 14 March. At approaching 68 years old, his appetite for hitting the road remains, yet is a much different experience to his younger days. And why shouldn’t it be? “I’m based in the south, as you know, and the lads are in Sheffield, so they’re in a small bus and I have a car and driver,” he laughs. “Believe me, I’ve got millions of miles on the clock and in the early days, most of them were pushing bloody vans, trying to get them started. Anything that takes the sting out of it these days I’m up for.” Touring always gives Paul the opportunity to return to his roots, to
Crookes, and catch up with family (his older brother John has recently retired), friends and to revisit another love. “I love going up, for my sins, to see Sheffield Wednesday,” he remarks. “I’m a season ticket holder but don’t get many games out of it. The worst part about it is, I’ve got two sons and a grandson, they’ve all been brainwashed, so it’s bad enough if you’re living in Sheffield, but down here, can you imagine the shit they’ve had at school with all the Arsenal and Tottenham fans?” After his solo tour finishes in March he’ll be heading back out on the road with Eric Clapton for dates in Japan, Germany and then a run at the Albert Hall in London. 2019 is shaping up pretty nicely. Paul Carrack plays Sheffield City Hall on 14 March. For ticket details visit https://sheffieldcityhall.sivtickets.com www.rmcmedia.co.uk 53

Aladdin in Grenoside After the success of Peter Pan last year, which broke all the society’s records for audience numbers, Grenoside Pantomime are returning to more traditional ground with their next production – the story of Aladdin. So we have Widow Twankey, whose name incidentally derives from a popular brand of tea 150 years ago which came from a province in China called Twan Kay, but why does she have a laundrette in Peking? Why does her son Aladdin have an Arabian name? And why doesn’t anybody think of using their first wish to ask the Genie for lots more wishes? But that’s panto for you. The comic policemen, Abanazar and his henchman Igor, the beautiful Princess Jasmine and her handmaiden Layla, the troublesome washing machine, “new lamps for old”... they’re all there The script is written, the music is chosen, and the casting has been done. There are 14 principals, 14 chorus members, 24 dancers and lots of people doing vital jobs off-stage. That’s 70 people who have to work as a team to make the panto come to life. And they will, because they always do! Grenoside Pantomime’s production of Aladdin is a fundraiser for the upkeep of Grenoside Community Centre. Dates and times are as follows: Friday 25 January 7.30pm, Saturday 26 January 2pm & 7.30pm, Sunday 27 January 2pm, Thursday 31 January 7.30pm, Friday 1 February 7.30pm, Saturday 2 February 2pm & 7.30pm. Mary Garside from Stannington was crowned Slimming World’s Woman of the year for 2018 after losing over three stones in 34 weeks. She said: “I had been a member of Slimming World before and I knew it worked for me. However I allowed myself to slip into bad habits and the weight I had previously lost had crept back on. I wanted to lose weight again for various health reasons and had tried dieting myself but I knew I needed more help and support. Mary before... “The final push I needed for rejoining Slimming World was my boyfriend proposing. Our wedding is in March 2019 and I want to look healthier on our big day and didn’t want to look back on the photographs knowing I had chance to lose weight but did nothing about it. I was nervous walking back in but members of the Stannington group have been fantastic – they are so supportive and have made coming back easy. “I have so far lost three stone, and with their help and Jo’s support, and knowing I can eat delicious filling meals I know I can get to my chosen target weight for the wedding. Slimming World really is a guilt free way to lose weight.” If you want to lose weight and would like to find out more a warm ...and after welcome awaits. You’re your local group at www.slimmingworld.co.uk Meanwhile as Slimming World enters its 50th year, a group of consultants from Sheffield celebrated half a century of success for the organisation by meeting TV personality and presenter Rylan Clark-Neal. Rylan co-hosted the annual Slimming World Awards with the organisation’s founder and chair Margaret Miles-Bramwell OBE. Margaret opened her first Slimming World group in 1969 and over the last 50 years the business has grown to become the UK’s leading groupbased weight-management organisation, today supporting nearly one million slimmers. The team, who run Slimming World groups in Sheffield, were delighted to get a chance to cuddle up to Rylan. Charlotte Hall said meeting the TV host was a wonderful way to round off a great year for the Slimming World, as well as a brilliant way to lead into 2019. “I couldn’t be more proud of our members. Not only have they lost fantastic amounts of weight throughout 2018 – with many of them hitting their target weights – they’ve also improved their health, boosted their confidence and are heading into 2019 with new healthy habits that will stay with them for life.” “Watching people change before my eyes and start being able to do things that they didn’t think were possible before losing weight absolutely amazes me. Every week I feel privileged to play even a small part in people’s achievements and to celebrate with them, so I felt especially honoured to represent our Slimming World groups at the Slimming World Awards. Rylan was blown away by the difference Slimming World makes to people’s lives too.” Rylan said he was thrilled to be invited to host the awards ceremony, which was held at Birmingham’s International Convention Centre. He said: “I met so many people who had lost incredible amounts of weight and made a huge difference to their lives. While the stories I heard were obviously very personal, the one thing they all had in common was how much support they received from their ‘Slimming World family’ and how so many of them were achieving their dreams.”

Bright ideas for the kitchen from Bumfords Here are some top energy-saving tips from Bumfords to make sure the kitchen remains at the heart of your home without cranking up those energy bills to scary levels. • When making a cup of tea, only fill the kettle with as much water as you need. • When cooking vegetables, use just enough water to keep them covered. • Use the kettle to boil water for cooking, instead of heating a pan on the stove. This is quicker and uses less energy. • Use a pan that is the right size for your cooking ring, then put a lid on it. This will heat up quicker and so using less gas. Remember, you only need the flame to be big enough to heat the base of the pan. • Why not invest in a steamer, or a segmented pan, so you can cook different vegetables on one ring. • Make sure your sink taps are properly turned off when you’re not using them. • Consider using the microwave instead of the oven. Microwaves cook food quicker. • Try and avoid keeping the oven door open for long while food is cooking. • Turn the oven off a few minutes earlier, while your food is still in there. Some dishes will cook while the oven’s cooling. • Ensure that your microwave is turned off when you’re not using it. • Do not put hot food in the fridge, it messes up the temperature inside. Leave it to cool naturally first. • Keep your fridge’s temperature at around 3°C to 5°C. • Try and load and unload your fridge as quickly as possible and don’t leave the fridge door open for longer than you need to. • Defrost your fridge and freezer regularly to stop ice building up. • Try to position your kitchen so your fridge and freezer aren’t close to cookers or direct sunlight. • Get the feather duster or vacuum out! When dust gathers on the condenser coils at the back of your fridge, it uses more energy. • Upgrade an old fridge-freezer for a newer model. Choosing an A++ model can save you around £190 in energy bills over the lifetime of the product. *Source: Energy Saving Trust

COMPETITION
Bev Coukham
Let your imagination run wild... BUDDING ARTISTS ARE INVITED TO ADD A SPLASH OF COLOUR TO OUR EASTER MAGAZINE – AND YOU COULD WIN YOURSELF A FABULOUS PRIZE, COURTESY OF BEV COUKHAM AT HILLSBOROUGH’S CURO GALLERY.
alling all would-be young artists... we are getting together with Curo Gallery owner Bev Coukham to organise an Easter painting competition for local children. The competition is open to all youngsters aged 12 and under in the North Sheffield area, and we are looking for a painting or drawing with a seasonal theme and a splash of colour. It could include a religious element, Easter bunnies, spring chicks, chocolate eggs... the subject matter is all down to the individual and his or her imagination. And don’t forget this is a Sheffield competition so if you want to throw in a familiar local landmark too, that would be great. The closing date is Friday 22 February, so you have plenty of time, but don’t leave it too long... get your thinking caps on now. Regular readers may recall our art competition from Christmas 2017. Bev,
C
whose gallery is on Middlewood Road in Hillsbrough, was also our judge then and she was hugely impressed with the standard of art and the lively imaginations at work. If you’re anxious that your art skills may not be up to scratch, don’t worry. Bev’s advice is to just enjoy yourself, get stuck in and see what happens. “Art doesn’t have to look perfect,” she says. “It should be about the passion and enjoyment you get out of it.” After the closing date we’ll examine all the entries and, with Bev Coukham as guest judge, we’ll come up with a winner. The winner will be invited by Bev (accompanied by a parent or responsible adult, of course) to visit Curo Gallery to choose a bespoke frame for the winning picture to be displayed in. The framed artwork will then be displayed in the window of Curo Gallery for all to see over the Easter holidays, after which the winner gets to keep their framed effort.
The winner will also, of course, be featured in a future issue of Sixer along with more fabulous examples of artwork from the best of the runners-up.
Sixer / Pulse Easter Painting Competition HOW TO ENTER: Choose your Easter theme and complete a painting or drawing. Wrap it carefully and post it to: Chris Wilson, Painting Competition, RMC Media, 6 Broadfield Court, Broadfield Business Park, Sheffield, S8 0XF. Please be sure to enclose full name, address, telephone and/or email address (parents or responsible adults may want to help here!) Entries close on Friday 22 February

Alison Fernandes
Elderly divorce ALISON FERNANDES, SPECIALIST FAMILY LAWYER WITH IRWIN MITCHELL PRIVATE WEALTH, DISCUSSES THE CHANGING ATTITUDES TO SEPARATING IN YOUR LATER YEARS. he latest set of ONS figures indicates the number divorcing over 60 continues to rise. Alison Lister and Alison Fernandes, specialist family lawyers with Irwin Mitchell Private Wealth, have found themselves being instructed more and more frequently by people who are in their sixties, seventies and even eighties. Alison says: “Whereas in the past a couple might have reached a particular point in their marriage and felt it was too late in the day to separate, attitudes have changed. The stigma once attached to divorce is now largely gone. Elderly clients often tell me that they are all too conscious of the passage of time and that they are no longer willing to spend their remaining years in an unhappy marriage.” Acting for the elderly can present quite particular challenges. Alison acted for one wife who had to move in with her daughter following divorce. Acting as ‘The Bank of Mum and Dad’, during their marriage the couple had gifted large sums of money to their children
T
70 www.rmcmedia.co.uk
never expecting that they would need it back. As a result of their generosity the couple’s own pot simply couldn’t support two separate households and in a stark role reversal, the wife found herself dependent upon the children she had wanted to provide for. Alison also acted for a husband who had been married very happily for 30 years, but on losing his wife he met and married another woman in a very short timescale. Alison refers to this as “Paul McCartney syndrome” – but where the assets involved are much more limited than those in the Mills/McCartney divorce – it can create real difficulty. Where people have retired and lost their borrowing capacity or they are entirely dependent on pensions in payment, options can be limited. If one person is in ill health, then meeting their additional needs can also be tricky. Alison says there are usually solutions but they require careful planning and creative thinking. In order to avoid losing a valuable widow’s or widower’s pension it is possible for a couple to
“judicially separate” rather than divorce. In order to unlock money in the family home, there are a number of companies that will assist with equity release. Alison also stresses how much importance people attach to the act of preparing and determining the content of their own will, without the interference of the other. Often a divorcing couple will know they both want to leave their assets to children or other relatives – however, they will feel it necessary to divide the pot whilst still alive and then each prepare their own will. Separation and divorce is going to represent a significant change to you and your family. Irwin Mitchell Private Wealth offer unrivalled understanding and can provide guidance and support to you for all legal needs, whatever the circumstance, so you can plan appropriately and make the right decisions at the right time. If you need legal advice, contact Alison on 0370 1500 100 Extension: 4545, or by email alison.fernandes@irwinmitchell.com

Delve into the Deep South WITH A RICH HISTORY, GOOD MUSIC AND CULTURE IN ABUNDANCE – NOT FORGETTING A DROP OF BOURBON OR TWO – THE SOUTHERN AMERICAN STATES ARE A MUST VISIT.
Cruise down the Mississippi on a traditional steamboat (above) or visit the Kentucky Horse Park (below)
ne of the most popular holiday destinations in the USA, it is no surprise that the Deep South USA region continues to attract a wide variety of visitors. Culture vultures, foodies, music lovers, history buffs, sports fans, outdoor adrenaline seekers are all well taken care of, whether choosing Tennessee, Alabama, Kentucky, Mississippi, Louisiana or a multiple-

combination of these states. Deep South USA has been responsible for the birth of America’s music and the invention of the cocktail. Although the incredible tastes of the Deep South were a relative secret until recently, the culinary world now knows it has all the hallmarks of what makes the region great: the variety and range of influences and a dedication to flavour.
TRAVEL
Kentucky bourbon is the taste of the Deep South
Kentucky Bourbon & Bluegrass Kentucky is the front porch of the South. Horses, bourbon and bluegrass are the wellknown signatures, but Kentucky also offers the finest in dining, arts, entertainment, history and thrilling outdoor adventure too. Visit the Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington, tour a thoroughbred horse farm or dive deeper into history at the birthplaces of Abraham Lincoln and Bill Monroe who was the father of Bluegrass music. Another unmissable attraction is tracing the iconic rise of Muhammad Ali, with a tour of his native Louisville. Ninety-five per cent of America’s ‘Native Spirit’ is distilled, aged and bottled in Kentucky and you can learn about this fascinating industry on a distillery tour along the Kentucky Bourbon Trail®. Alabama’s sensational golf courses are a must-try
Sweet Home Alabama
Toe-tapping Tennessee Tennessee is all about authentic experiences. Whether enjoying one of the mainstream options of Memphis, Nashville, Knoxville or Chattanooga, or visiting some of America’s most inspiring small towns. When it comes to music, Tennessee brings the toe-tapping, soulsaving kind – the blues, rock ‘n’ roll, soul, country, gospel and everything in between. Tennessee’s creative spirit is the stuff America was built on. It is infused into every sip of Jack Daniel’s oak-barrel-aged amber gold and every bite of Memphis barbecue. The state’s beauty is highlighted by America’s most visited national park – Great Smoky Mountains – and scenic rivers that sculpt its landscape.
Sweet home Alabama really does live up to its name! Alabama has been at the crossroads of American history since the beginning. On a journey through Alabama you can see Civil War battlefields, tour antebellum mansions and visit Montgomery, Selma and Birmingham, where Dr Martin Luther King Jr. and many others changed the nation. You can explore the final frontier in Huntsville’s U.S. Space and Rocket Center, which is the largest space attraction on the planet. Have you got rhythm? Then you’ll want to hear the stories behind the music of Muscle Shoals’ FAME studios. You’ll be singing ‘Sweet Home Alabama’ all year long.
Mighty Mississippi You’re invited to come on down to Mississippi for some thrilling live music, colonial history, outdoor fun and authentic Deep South dining. There’s a lot to love between the lush Mississippi Delta and the year-round sunny Gulf Coast beaches. Explore the historic Natchez Trace Parkway or look for more than 190 markers along the Mississippi Blues Trail. Remember to find your way to Elvis Presley’s Birthplace in Tupelo, the GRAMMY Museum Mississippi and the spectacular B.B. King Museum & Delta Interpretive Center. Mississippi is simply too good to miss.

Bright ideas IS THERE SECRET TREASURE LURKING IN YOUR JEWELLERY BOX? THE TEAM AT PA JEWELLERY CAN HELP BRING ADDED SPARKLE TO THOSE HIDDEN GEMS. t’s that time again; the new year bringing with it a sense of renewal and a desire to start afresh. It’s also a great time to sort through your jewellery box and ensure you are getting the most out of the pieces you own. As always, our team are here to help with any questions that may arise, but before you start, here are some of our top tips:
I
Valuations: It’s important to make sure that the pieces you treasure most are properly insured and have an up-to-date valuation if necessary. Check the singleitem limit on your insurance policy; you may need to specify more valuable items. If you are unsure what the current replacement value is, we can offer advice at the counter. Should you require a written valuation we offer this service; you can find more details on our website or contact us directly. Valuations should be checked every few years and updated if necessary (some insurers will insist on this).
Repairs: Customers often tell us they have items stored away because they are broken or no longer fit. Often these problems can be quite easily rectified in our workshop; a favourite ring could be resized and enjoyed again, or broken chain repaired. The new year is also a great time to have the jewellery you wear regularly checked to ensure that settings and clasps remain secure. A preemptive repair can mean avoiding the expense and upset of losing a valuable gemstone or chain completely. We can provide repair advice while you wait and when inspecting your jewellery, we can bring the sparkle back with a steam clean free of charge. Remodelling: Sometimes the pieces hiding in your jewellery box are unable to be repaired or are a style you have fallen out of love with. Often these items will still hold great sentimental value, so it is worth thinking about whether the precious metals and stones you have could be remodelled into new jewellery
that you can wear and enjoy. Remounting your diamonds into a more modern setting, creating a contemporary cluster design from assorted stones or making a stylish bangle from spare gold; all these things and more may be possible. You can talk through your ideas and find out what your pieces could create with one of our jewellers. Selling: If you’re hoping to slim down your jewellery collection or free up some cash for something else then selling your unwanted jewellery could be a good idea. We are always on the lookout for great quality pre-owned pieces and even if your gold or silver jewellery is broken or too worn to resell then it will still have some value in the precious metal that can be recycled. Look familiar? appy New Year to all our readers and we start 2019 with a real puzzler. You may be able to work out the location, as there are a few local landmarks to help you out. The school run just got stylish Dear parents of the daily school run, I have a present for you. Say hello to the all-new Range Rover Evoque. Voted the favourite car amongst all the mums out there country-wide for the school run, the Evoque is one of the best SUVs on the market: its luxurious interior, 4x4 go-anywhere ability and that badge make it an instant hit for the middle-class families. Taking styling cues from the Velar, the Evoque is certainly a looker and will stand out on the road. It is the first car in the world to feature ground-view technology, which allows you to see underneath the bonnet for added visibility. Three petrol and three diesel engines available. Staring from £31,600. Available to order now.
Summer lovin’
The colour of individuality Do you want an alternative SUV that looks quirky and stands out from the crowd? You are in luck, because there’s this, the Citroen C5 Aircross. One main fact – there are 30 different colours to choose from! Essentially you will struggle to find another car like your own. Citroen’s latest suspension system for the C5 Aircross will make it one of the most comfortable cars in its class, something which has been synonymous with Citroen over the many decades. Along with comfort, there’s a plethora of technology to boot with a great range of standard equipment to choose from. Talking of boots, the C5 Aircross has a 580litre boot which extends to 1630-litres. Available with six-speed manual and an eight-speed automatic. Prices start from £23,225.
Say hello to the all-new BMW 3Series. The car the ordinary man on the street aspires to own. The 3-Series is a sleek, beautiful machine which is synonymous and objectified with success. As a result, the 3-Series needs to live up to the expectations its predecessors have set down. We will have to wait a while before the 3-Series hits our shores – approximately summer of 2019 – but some engine choices have been released. The first of which is the M340i xDrive. This comes with 3.0-litre turbocharged straight-six engine producing 374hp with a 0-62mph time registering at 4.4 seconds. The next model is the 330e, a plug -in-hybrid with an electric-only range of 37 miles. More power, more efficiency. More technology. Whats not to love?
Drop-top gorgeous Hello the privileged few, your new open-top chariot awaits. Welcome to the Bentley Continental GT Convertible. The Continental has always been the go-to car for the rich and famous – luxury, speed and the glamourous image the Bentley coupe upholds is a perfect match for the individuals living the high-life. The car, like before, will come with a 6.0-litre W12 engine producing 626hp and 664lb ft of torque; all this horsepower being transmitted through an eight-speed dual-clutch transmission and transferred to the road through a four-wheel drive system. This new convertible has been tested to be as quiet as the outgoing coupe variant – that is impressive, giving the new Continental and even more grand tourer personality. Sun tan for the summer, cocooned luxury in the winter. www.rmcmedia.co.uk 81
