ENJOY THE SUMMER BUT MAKE SURE YOUR CENTRAL HEATING IS UP TO SCRATCH – BUMFORDS ARE HERE TO HELP FOR WHEN THE COLD BITES.

Think ahead ummer is here, warm weather is upon us and hopefully we’ll have a few months of lovely, low energy bills as we rarely, if ever, need to resort to cranking up the central heating. But just because we aren’t working our boilers quite as hard as we were during the harsh days and nights of winter, that doesn’t mean we can afford to neglect this all-important piece of household kit. Soon enough we’ll be anticipating the return of autumn and when it comes it’s important to ensure you are not left shivering on the sofa after a long day at work. So take into consideration the health of your boiler now, and you won’t be caught out by a breakdown when the weather turns. We all know that boilers don’t come cheap, so when it’s time to upgrade we want the assurance that we won’t be on the hunt for another one two years

FROM VACANT PROPERTY PROTECTION TO SHORT TERM LIVING ARRANGEMENTS, GET IN TOUCH WITH AD HOC PROPERTY MANAGEMENT. d Hoc Property Management are Europe’s leading property protection specialists, headquartered in London with nine offices across the UK. Providing bespoke solutions to property owners looking to protect their assets, Ad Hoc uses a mix of property guardians (protection through occupation) and versatile security technology such as CCTV camera towers, mobile hybrid towers and intruder alarm systems to do so. When properties are left empty, they instantly become targets for vandalism, illegal squatting, and in some extreme cases, arson. Statistics also show that empty buildings deteriorate ten per cent faster than those which are occupied and in use, so by occupying buildings, Ad Hoc ensures any maintenance issues such as plumbing and electrical problems are immediately flagged and repaired. While owners are deciding what they want to do with their properties, Ad Hoc protects them through occupation, ensuring they stay safe and maintained,

A

and the communities around them don’t become ridden with petty criminals and anti-social behaviour. Property guardianship as a concept originated in the Netherlands, and is becoming a growing trend here in the UK. Ad Hoc treats buildings as temporary accommodation and move in carefully vetted professionals looking for a low cost living arrangement. Property guardians pay up to 60 per cent less for accommodation than they would in the private rental market, giving them the opportunity to save up to get on the property ladder themselves. Ad Hoc’s guardians are not classed as traditional tenants, but licensees, signing a

license to occupy agreement which allows them to take up temporary residence in a property at a very reduced rate, paying a monthly licence fee in place of a monthly rental payment. Ad Hoc Property Management operates on flexible 28 day rolling contracts, which means guardians only need to provide them with 28 days’ notice if they want to leave, and they offer the same in return if an owner needs their property back. If you have a vacant property requiring protection, or if you’re looking for somewhere to live, get in touch with Ad Hoc Property Management today. For owners, call 0333 015 6660 Email: sales@adhoc.eu Potential licensees, call 0333 015 6661 Email: guardians@adhoc.eu www.adhocproperty.co.uk

ANNUAL REPORT Outgoing message from Cllr Trevor Bagshaw – Chair 2018/19 I would like to start by thanking all of my fellow councillors for their support while I have been chair. I would particularly like to express my thanks to the clerk and her assistant, Teresa and Pam; their always available help and guidance for the members makes the difference between order and chaos. With them of course are our groundsmen at Coronation Park, Dungworth Park, the picnic area by Smithy Bridge and Birtin Cemetery, just a few of many locations in the parish that reflect the quality and extent of their contribution. Martin joined us as a full-time employee earlier this year, and we welcomed him as we said goodbye to David Palmer who retired after more than 47 years of service to the parish. Thanks must also go to Pam and Stuart for their caretaking duties at the Parish Council offices, and of course we cannot forget Malcolm, our archivist, who takes the time to support local schools and community groups in preserving the history of the parish. On a reflective note, I would also like to ask you all to think about our colleague and my predecessor as chair, Cllr Victoria Talbot, who has been very ill for many months and who has made many important contributions to the life of this council. It has been a busy but successful year, and I would like to draw your attention to just two or three significant events. • The glorious summer enabled many village community groups to deliver stunning events, many of which the

Parish Council was pleased to help in kind or cash, and to which I had the real pleasure and privilege to attend. • In October, the Parish Council, as a founding partner in the Sheffield Lakeland Landscape Project, learned of our successful bid to the Heritage Lottery Fund. Already we are seeing results through the Community Grant Scheme. It bodes well for the economic benefit the parish will reap in future years from that £3.4million investment. • In November, the parish honoured and remembered all those who gave their lives in WWI. The planting of English oak trees in the Dungworth and Coronation parks, and the placing of memorial benches at various locations was our lasting tribute to those heroes. Whilst these public events stand out, the Parish Council also works through its committees. Cllr Habeshaw as Chair of Land and Premises has supported a range of initiatives to help improve our parks. We have undertaken necessary repairs and improvement to some of our properties. The Christmas trees were a great success once again, and the local children really engaged in the Christmas card competition and enjoyed the buns at the post competition party. Cllr Southwood as Chair of Finance & Staffing has helped the council maintain its service to the community within a budget set for the year. All our annual accounts are subject to a full internal audit carried out by an independent fully qualified auditor, all this before being submitted for external audit. The council continues its working

partnerships with Action for Stannington, Steel Valley Project and Oughtibridge Gala Events and Donations Charity. Cllr Bennett, Chair of the Planning Committee reports on a busy year. There are many large developments around the parish just coming into fruition, or continuing the back and forth between the planners. The brown field sites around the Oughtibridge Mill areas are seen to be opportunities for the enhancement of those villages. We have had many professional presentations from builders and developers during these past four years at the council planning committee meetings. Each fortnight we hold a planning meeting to make observations about current plans for consideration under the Town & Country Planning Act tabled from SCC & PDNPA. We have members of the committee from each of the parish wards, and with the local knowledge of these members, we see the plans from the local perspective and discuss any problems relating to these areas and how the prospective plans could affect the local neighbourhoods. Members regularly help out with parishioners planning concerns and problems, both by attending site visits and by inviting parishioners to present their concerns direct to the committee. We continually develop the effectiveness of the committee’s work and encourage parishioners to engage with the planning committee. Finally, I would like to say that I wish the next council all the very best in tackling the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead.

FINANCIAL REPORT 2018/2019

The Parish Council approved expenditure for the financial year 2018/19 of £250,874. The Council’s expenditure relates to services carried out in the area, enhancing the work of Sheffield City Council and local community groups, maintenance of its assets, which include Council offices, Coronation Park, Birtin Cemetery, Low Bradfield public toilets, several stone built bus shelters, vehicles and equipment, and numerous wayside seats and noticeboards, and provision of illuminated Christmas trees throughout the Parish. An amount is also set aside each year for grants to local organisations. The full list of successful grant applications for 2018/2019 can be found on the website. The precept collected from the local taxpayers amounted to £241,870. The balance was met from reserves, income from Birtin Cemetery, rental income, the sale of an asset and other miscellaneous income. The Council’s accounts are subject to external audit. The

external audit will be undertaken in July 2019 and the accounts will be made available to the public during July 2019. The final audit report will be displayed after completion of the external audit. For the current year 2019/20 budgeted expenditure amounts to £278,206 with a precept of £246,372.

NEWSLETTER 2019/2020 Welcome to the first newsletter from the newly elected council, this accompanies the Annual Report for 2018/19. I served on the previous council as parish councillor for Wharncliffe Side and Midhopestones Ward. Over these years I have met and worked with so many dedicated people who really care about their communities and make a tangible difference to the quality of life within them. So, on 2 May 2019, I again put my name forward to be parish councillor for the ward. I was successful in my re-election and will represent the ward for the next four years. Our new council is a mix of councillors old and new, and brief profiles for our newly elected councillors are overleaf. At the first council meeting on 15 May 2019, I was delighted and honoured that the new council elected me as their chairman. I will work towards engaging the parishioners and the new council to enhance the quality of life for everyone who lives in Bradfield Parish. We are very fortunate to live here, it has everything; moors, forests, arable land, grass fields stretching as far as the eye can see, reservoirs, rivers, streams, ancient bridges, character villages, country manor houses, farms dating back to pre-Elizabethan times, cottages scattered across the parish many hundreds of years old, winding single track

lanes that sometimes change their names three or more times along their length, history that is legend. It is my intention over the next 12 months to bring some of these interesting facts, historic buildings and stories from the different wards of the parish into our newsletter in Sixer and onto our website and Facebook pages. I am also very privileged to be the chair of the Board of Governors at Loxley Primary School. At this outstanding school, the Class 4 teacher is Mr Dan Eaton. Mr Eaton is also a published author and archaeological sciences graduate. He has been investigating in great detail the woodland within the school grounds. To start these articles of interest, on the following page is a short article about ‘The Riddle of Robin of Loxley’. I have lived in the parish for decades, and with my passion being horses, I have ridden most areas, bridleways, byways and lanes that criss-cross throughout this, the largest parish (in area) in the country. We must all work towards maintaining this for ourselves and future generations. The blight that I have worked on fixing over all these decades I have lived in the parish, and over the past four years as parish councillor is litter. It’s ongoing, the problem is mended and

then someone parks to enjoy our superb views, eats a takeaway, drinks a can of lager, then leaves all the litter from their snack as they drive away and the problem needs fixing again. We can all try to educate our visitors, we can all pick up the litter left near our homes, it’s ongoing, but necessary. Already around the ward I represent, I can still see litter, but less of it, the problem is gradually improving. Please everyone keep going, let’s all enjoy this superb area we live in as a litter-free zone. If we all keep ‘picking’ we will get there, a litter-free parish. There are existing projects started by the previous council which we are progressing. One of these being ‘The Three Parishes Events’ which has been scheduled for three weekends in September and is still in the planning stages. The ideas for these events were discussed last year by Sheffield Lakeland Landscape and the three parishes of Bradfield, Ecclesfield and Stocksbridge who all came together to plan what promises to be a full programme of events and talks organised around cultural heritage of ancient woodlands, wildlife and connectivity, full details will follow. While chair I have been delighted to host the Wharncliffe Side School Council at our parish offices, attended the Bradfield Music Festival as guest of the trustees and attended a civic reception at Sheffield Town Hall. As the sun comes back and the height of the summer arrives, the Bradfield Parish Wards are all starting with their galas and garden parties, it promises to be a rich and interesting summer. Robin of Loxley Hunting for Robin Hood at Loxley Primary School Scholars have spent many years debating the existence of Robin Hood, but now in a forgotten corner of Loxley, new light has been shed on an actual documented figure who potentially fits the origins of the legendary ‘hooded man’. Loxley Primary School uses the land now known as Robin Wood (a totally coincidental name given just a few years ago) for its woodland curriculum, but research is looking like it can prove that it is – or is very close to – the location of a reference given in 1637 as ‘Little Haggas

Croft; wherein is ye foundacions of a cottage where Robin Hood was bone’, not across the way at Normandale as has been assumed for many years. This reference has long since been overlooked as it is much later than when Robin was supposed to have lived, but is not too far removed from linking Loxley to a man known as Robert Dore of Wadsley, also known as Robert Hood, who was arrested as one of the leaders of the 1380 Peasant’s Uprising in York. Robin was the traditional shortened form

of Robert. His archenemy (the mayor at the time), a man named Gisburn (although John, not Guy) and his punishment: a stint in the tower before receiving a full pardon from good King Richard (the II in this case, not the Lionheart as tales would have us believe) two years later. Some of this woodland shows evidence of being from antiquity, and one part backing on to Loxley Common contains dense masses of extremely mature holly trees, an essential requirement for peasant’s pasture land which is revealed

by its old Yorkshire place-name, Haggas. Combined with other newly discovered ‘on the ground’ evidence, Loxley teacher and archaeological sciences graduate Dan Eaton feels that the school’s work may hold the key to unlocking a long lost riddle. He suggests: “Very little has ever been recorded of Loxley in the Middle Ages prior to 1400; no-one has ever really established where the original settlement was at this time, and certainly on flatter ground close to the river would be the most obvious suggestion, not way out on the slopes above Rodney Hill. “This side of the valley going towards Bradfield was a hunting area known as Loxley Chase, with a region known as Loxley Common (which was probably the worst land available in the area) allocated for peasant usage. “This was conjoined to Wadsley Common – and a stone’s throw in the bigger picture from Little Haggas Croft – so the two areas would have had indistinguishable boundaries. Landowners cared about where their own land started or finished, not where common lands met. “It is perfectly acceptable that Robert Dore could have been born just this side of the ‘border’ rather than the better historically established Wadsley. A legacy of oral history passed through several generations of sedentary families could easily have kept this locational knowledge alive until John Harrison’s visit in 1637. “Ask yourself this: if Loxley isn’t the earliest recorded birthplace of Robin Hood, why would anyone have heard of such a backwater locale at the time if there wasn’t some truth in it? There is still much to be done, but hopefully Dan and Loxley Primary will be able to continue to untangle the Gordian Knot that is the origins of Robin Hood in the coming months.

NEW COUNCILLOR PROFILES Councillor Chris Carter I am Chris Carter, and I’ve lived in Stannington for about 40 years. I have worked as a project engineer at British Steel, as a researcher in material science at the University of Sheffield, and as a lecturer in computing at Sheffield Hallam. I am very concerned about global warming, and am keen to promote technologies and policies that can help with it. I am the coordinator of the Deaf Awareness Group of Sheffield U3A, and I enjoy classical music and walking.

Councillor Penny Baker I am Penny Baker, currently a Sheffield City Councillor and Bradfield Parish Councillor. I was Lady Mayoress of Sheffield in 2001/02, and am married to city councillor David Baker. We have a large family and I’m now a grandmother. I live locally and love the green space and local heritage that can be found in the area.

Councillor Terry Barrow I have lived in Oughtibridge for over 30 years, raised three children here and now have a grandson in the village. I care deeply about this area and all the families and individuals who live here, use its amenities or simply pass through. I want it to be safe, welcoming and fun. I have a long history of campaigning on a multitude of issues, including education, road safety, planning applications, flood defences and policing, and my hope is that we can work together to retain the best

features of our village whilst managing some of the growth and changes that are coming our way. I very much look forward to trying to represent you in this.

Councillor Nigel Clark I am a retired adult education lecturer and trade union officer. I have lived in Sheffield all my life and for the last 40 years have lived in the Worrall area. Locally, we face big challenges. Major housing developments will put pressure on local resources and add to existing traffic and environmental problems. In addition, there is a major concern that local facilities, schools, healthcare and also local shops will be affected. The other issue is the nature of this new housing, we are faced with the type of houses the developers want to build, not necessarily what we need. The parish council can be an important voice in making sure that these developments are a benefit to our community.

Councillor Pete Shaw I began my working life in the refactory industry and later began studying with the Open University. In 1980 I then trained as a teacher, entering a period in my life that brought great enjoyment. Now retired, my current interests include performing at open mic events, folk clubs and with Oughtibridge Choir. My other passion is that of gardening, mainly growing fruit and vegetables. As a member of the Parish Council, I am looking forward to the opportunity to help improve the everyday lives of local residents and businesses, transport facilities and the local environment, reducing the impact of traffic passing through the village.

Deepcar Home Improvements offer a long list of products and services to their customers. It’s all well and good that companies these days have websites full of products for you to browse, but nothing is quite the same as being able to see and feel the quality of a product in person, and having someone share their expertise on each product with you. With years of experience comes a level of invaluable knowledge, and the whole team at Deepcar Home Improvements take pride in the fact that not only do they provide the best products to their customers, but the best service too. “Everyone that walks through the door is offered a cuppa” says Ian. BITS & PIECES

Laura Crisp

Last chance to ‘Make Your Mark’

Time is running out for a once in a lifetime chance to ‘make your mark’ on Wentworth Woodhouse. There are less than three months to go before major repairs commence on the roof sitting over the magnificent state rooms at the Grade I listed mansion in Rotherham. The start of this vital work means the Preservation Trust’s Make Your Mark in History Appeal, must draw to a close. The appeal enables anyone to sponsor a roof slate and have it inscribed with their own message before it goes onto the roof above the famous East Front, to remain there for centuries. Sheffield-born Laura Crisp has her name on a roof slate and has sponsored slates for each of her four grandchildren. Laura found out her grandfather John Thomas Jones, who died aged 67 in 1947, had worked at Wentworth Woodhouse as a groom around 1911, and lived on Barrowfield Gate in the village. To support work to protect Wentworth Woodhouse, go to www.wentworthwoodhouse.org.uk

Stocksbridge Clock Tower to become dedicated site The historically important Stocksbridge Clock Tower and Gardens, one of more than 800 green open spaces in Sheffield, has been officially dedicated as a Centenary Field protected site. Set in landscaped gardens, with public footpaths running through, the site is a popular destination for walkers, those taking a rest on their way to the town centre, and the children who love to play there. The clock itself still keeps accurate time and the chimes can be heard throughout the area. The Clock Tower and gardens are one of the most historically important sites in the Stocksbridge and Deepcar area. Overlooking the Stocksbridge Valley, the Clock Tower War Memorial was built to the memory 107 young people, a nurse, sailors and soldiers, who died in the First World War. Marathon golf pair raise £1,500 for St Luke’s Hospice Stocksbridge Golf Club captain Steven Haigh and league team player Matt Sedgwick raised more than £1,500 for St Luke’s Hospice as they braved summer downpours and completed ten rounds of golf in just one day. The pair teed off at 3.55am and finished at 9.45pm after covering a remarkable 35 miles in 83,000 steps and climbing the equivalent of 600 flights of stairs on the hilly Stocksbridge course. By the end of the gruelling sporting session they had raised more than £1,500 for St Luke’s, which is the golf club’s nominated charity of the year.

Men at Wadsley House and women at Stannington play crown green bowls

Bowled over IF YOU HAVEN’T GIVEN CROWN GREEN BOWLS A TRY YET, NOW IS THE PERFECT OPPORTUNITY. CHRIS WILSON LOOKS AT ITS LASTING APPEAL. t’s one of the classic sights of summertime in Sheffield... a perfectly mown lawn, a friendly sporting contest and never (or rarely) a harsh word spoken. Welcome to the world of crown green bowls, a sport that is played almost exclusively in the northern England and has enjoyed particular popularity in Sheffield for more than a century. It is a pastime that has a reputation for being very popular among the over-60s, and indeed it can be a lifeline for pensioners looking for companionship and a way to pass the time when they retire from work. But you don’t need to be an ‘oldie’ to appreciate a sport that does not require particular physical strength but nonetheless

presents its own unique challenge. Jean and Don Perry from Stannington Bowling Club both took up crown green bowls around 20 years ago. Jean recalls: “Don retired one December and we decorated the house, then when the nicer weather came we

sorted the garden and had some nice days out. Then we needed a hobby we could both do together and bowls came straight to mind.” For Don, who had played several sports including football, cricket and judo in his younger days, the competitive instinct was there from the start. Jean came from a bowls background but, having been a reluctant spectator as a child when her father played at Bolehills in Crookes, she was determined not to let bowls take over her life too much. “Dad loved bowling, I hated it,” she recalls. “As a child I was dragged from pillar to post watching him and I vowed I’d never play.” But obviously there was something ‘in the blood’ because over the last two decades Jean

has become one of the stalwarts at Stannington Bowling Club, not just playing but fundraising for a refurbished portacabin and bathroom facilities. Crown green bowls may be an easy game to understand once you know a few simple rules, but to the casual outsider it can look more than a little chaotic. The sport gets its name from the ‘crown’ of the playing surface. That’s the small hill or slope that ensures every green is different. Some greens have more than one crown. The whole green is used during a match with ‘ends’ played short or long, diagonally or straight. And of course, there can be more than one match on the green at any given time. Taking alternate turns to bowl at the white ball or jack, players compete to get their woods closest to the jack. It’s that simple but the higher the standard the more skill comes into play “Every green varies,” says Jean. “You never play on a flat surface so being at home should be a big advantage. “They do say you should never lose at home. It happens of course, but home advantage should play a large factor. Then there’s the weather, which can change more than once during the course of a match and have a big effect. “These greens can be really slow in the morning, the sun shines and it speeds up, then the clouds roll in and it becomes sluggish again.” All these factors affect the outcome in the many different league matches being played all over Sheffield throughout the summer. But if you prefer to just play at your nearest green for the fun and companionship, that aspect also plays a key part of every club. There are 42 greens in Sheffield alone so it sounds as if bowls is booming. But there has definitely been a falling off in the number of participants over the last few years. Derek Ellis from Hillsborough Park and Wadsley House bowling clubs, is keenly aware that bowls has lost some of its appeal – and he thinks he knows why. “Crown green bowling started in Sheffield in 1908 and since then Sheffield has lost approximately 100

greens,” he says. “Approximately 30 pubs have lost their bowling greens... most of them are car parks now. Then there’s the closure of working men’s clubs such as Dial House and Wadsley Bridge where bowls played a big part.”

Derek also points to the decline of smaller family steelworks and the local mines, all of which had their own sporting associations. Jean has also noticed the change in lifestyles that sees people working longer hours and grandparents being drafted in as childminders so they can’t escape so easily to play bowls in the afternoon. It all adds up to a sporting activity that, while not in terminal decline, could do with a bit of a boost. But on the bright side, new recruits are still finding crown green bowls and falling for its unique charms. Jean advertised in the February issue of Sixer and was staggered by the response. “I got 14 new players from one advert in Sixer and every one of them has joined the club. You’d expect at least a couple to decide it was not for them but they have all come along and played and stayed with us, which is great news. “One new member was uncertain because he was a little unsteady with his balance and I explained that he could get a stick with a pad on the bottom to help with that. So that’s what he did and he’s much more confident and is enjoying it.” Meanwhile at the young end of the age scale Derek sees particular benefits. “The advantage with bowls is you can’t get bullied,” he says. “For children who are not well built or are a bit shy or

introverted it’s a good game. Physical size doesn’t come into it.” As a veteran who has been playing bowls for 64 years Derek knows just why a gentle pastime can become an intensely competitive sport. “All greens are totally different and have their own character. That’s where the skill comes in. You have to read the green. But I’ve been playing so long I know every green in Sheffield – the home player doesn’t have an advantage against someone like me. “But if a newcomer visits another green he or she is up against it. The slight rises in the crown catch them out. You have to use your brain all the time, and that makes it a real challenge. “But whether you play for sport or fun it’s great exercise. You can walk roughly a quarter of a mile in a game, it’s virtually impossible to get injured and you can play from aged eight to 90. Families and couples can play together, so from a social point of view it’s very good.” And with 40-plus greens in Sheffield there’s bound to be one right on your doorstep. So, if you haven’t given crown green bowls a try yet, now is the perfect opportunity. www.rmcmedia.co.uk 55

Join the club! AS WADSLEY HOUSE SOCIAL CLUB PREPARES TO CELEBRATE ITS 100TH ANNIVERSARY, NOW IS A GREAT TIME TO DISCOVER JUST HOW MUCH IT HAS TO OFFER. adsley House Social Club is going from strength to strength as it celebrates its centenary year, with crown green bowling just one of the many activities keeping members busy in 2019. Although it has been going strong for 100 years, the club can still be regarded as something of a hidden gem in the heart of Wadsley and now is the perfect time to discover all it has to offer. The club is nestled in its own attractive grounds just off Marlcliffe Road and is a non-profit-making limited company, run for the benefit of its members. It was first set up as a private gentlemen’s club in 1919, before being sold to its members in more recent years. Nowadays, it has a more open approach, welcoming both male and female members over the age of 21 and families, as well as opening up to the general public for functions and special events. The building’s leisure facilities include a lounge area with comfortable seating, a wide screen TV and access to the bar, which has an excellent variety of beers, lagers, wines, spirits and soft drinks at reasonable prices. The lounge also plays host to the weekly Tuesday Night Quiz. There is a separate snooker room with two full-sized snooker tables and direct access to the bar. The games room has a TV, 3/4 sized snooker table, pool table and dart board that all the family can enjoy.

Outside, there’s a crown bowling green, pavilion and outdoor seating area to enjoy on warmer days, as well as a car park. The snooker section runs many successful competitions throughout the year and has a snooker night on Wednesdays. Snooker night is a great way to catch up with friends whilst enjoying a drink and light refreshments. The bowling section has a strong social life with members enjoying a drink and a chat in the club after a game. The clubs internal bowling competitions are held on Sundays and are attended by a wide range of age groups who enjoy the relaxed atmosphere, a drink and the occasional barbeque. These events have also been used to raise money for charity. The club also runs an angling section. Meetings are held at the club on Mondays and the section’s venues include Lindholme Lakes, Woodhouse Grange and Hallcroft Fisheries. The function room is located downstairs and can be hired for weddings, dinner dances, private parties, christenings and funeral receptions. Whether you are wanting to include a sit-down dinner or a more casual buffet for your guests, the venue can comfortably cater for between 50 and 60, with a capacity of up to 150 for standing guests. All of their staff are friendly and

experienced in events and are here to make your event a success. The club even has a resident DJ who is happy to play music for all age groups and tastes. The function room has a dance floor, a comfortable seating area, a conservatory opening onto the bowling green and benefits from full disabled access and facilities. As Wadsley House Social Club’s 100th anniversary approaches next year, chairman Dennis Law and the team have a lot to celebrate. The OEC will be launched in midNovember. The first wedding booking has already been taken, and as well as being available for private hire there will be a full range of Christmas party packages to suit everyone, from party nights packed with live entertainment from house band The Bootleggers and disco fun to fine dining on New Year’s Eve. Put your trust in PA Jewellery IN THE FINAL PART OF OUR DIAMOND BUYING GUIDE, WE LOOK AT HOW CONFIDENCE IS KEY WHEN MAKING A PURCHASE THAT HAS BOTH EMOTIONAL AND FINANCIAL SIGNIFICANCE: YOU WANT TO BE SURE THAT YOU ARE MAKING A WELLINFORMED DECISION. eople often talk about ‘the four Cs’ indicating the quality of a diamond: the cut, carat, colour and clarity we have discussed in previous articles. You may also hear ‘certificate’ or ‘confidence’ given as a ‘fifth C’. It is now commonplace for stones larger than around 0.30ct to have certificates or reports independently assessing their quality. This should give the stone’s colour, clarity and cut grades, as well as weight, measurements and shape. We tend to select stones that have been issued with a report from the Gemological Institute of America (GIA). They are widely regarded as the most consistent laboratory for diamond grading, so you can be sure the information in the report is independent and accurate. There are many different bodies that issue diamond certificates and not all of them grade to the same

P

68 www.rmcmedia.co.uk

standards, so it is important to research beforehand to ensure your diamond is certificated by a qualified, independent and reputable laboratory. A thorough certificate can only be provided for a single diamond prior to it being mounted in jewellery: afterwards inclusions may be hidden by the setting and it isn’t possible to assess a stone from all angles. In pieces containing multiple stones there is often slight variation which cannot be accounted for. Therefore, a certificate may not be appropriate for an eternity ring or cluster piece. For pieces containing one or more diamonds of significant size, such as the centre stone of a halo cluster or pair of solitaire earrings, the stones may have individual reports. To make you feel confident in your purchase it is also important that you feel comfortable and in control

throughout the process. All our staff are professional jewellers with several of them qualified gemmologists and diamond graders. They have the experience and expertise to answer your questions and offer helpful advice and are always willing to talk you through your options without a pressurised sales environment. We have a wide selection of diamonds available to view in our showroom, of assorted sizes and grades, with something to suit every budget. Why not browse on our website first and then pop in for a chat with one of our jewellers; there’s no need to book an appointment. DO YOU REMEMBER?

Jolly holidays DO YOU RECOGNISE THESE SUMMERTIME SHOTS FROM YESTERYEAR? igh days and holidays is the theme for this month’s Do You Remember and we look back to the way North Sheffield folk used to pass their leisure time back in the day. These people certainly look like they are making the most of the occasion – any ideas as to where and when the photos were taken? Last month we set you a brain teaser and asked you to identify a sporting pastime that has fallen by the wayside, and there was plenty of interest. The photo showed the Dungworth Knurr and Spell team outside the Royal Hotel c.1919. The rules were pretty basic – a small ceramic ball was launched upwards from a spring trap whereupon a ‘batter’ would attempt to hit it as far as possible using a long wooden stick with an iron block on the end. Local history expert Ron Clayton tells us the game was hugely popular in the North of England but interest tailed off after World War Two with the last world championships being held in 1991. Apparently the late, great Yorkshire and England fast bowler Fred Trueman was a keen player of what was sometimes known as ‘nipsy’ or the ‘poor man’s golf ’ and equipment can be seen in the Tolson Museum in Huddersfield. Ron adds: “I believe it was played on Wadsley Common as football and cricket was once and it would be a game that the ganister miners, farmers and labourers, cutlers and pub goers would find enjoyable as the equipment was inexpensive and could be made at home.” Meanwhile Megan Allen recognised her grandfather, Hedley Green, as the gentleman about to strike the ball. Mystery solved. There were two other photos offered for perusal in last month’s Sixer, both courtesy of Barry Couldwell, featuring 1950s football line-ups from Worrall FC.

HEROES

Hero worship WE’VE HAD A WHOLE YEAR OF INSPIRATIONAL STORIES AND PEOPLE – HERE’S HOW THEY HAVE MADE NORTH SHEFFIELD A BETTER PLACE.

August 2018 Aisha Thabet, a 26-year-old nurse from Sheffield, was chosen as an ambassador for a new national nursing and allied health profession recruitment campaign. Her new role required her to spread the word about the profession, talk about her experiences and provide advice to those thinking about getting into nursing, as well as encouraging more students to study for degrees in the nursing profession. Aisha said: “I’m really proud to have been chosen as an ambassador for this exciting new campaign. It’s vital that we inspire more young people who are choosing their future career paths to study these degrees and educate them on the huge range of opportunities that careers in nursing offer.” For more information, visit www.healthcareers.nhs.uk/knowaboutnursing

September 2018 Laura Riley is a healthcare professional in mental health who suffered years of emotional and financial abuse from her son’s father. After re-establishing her life in Sheffield, Laura decided to set up an online support group in 2013 – Mums In Need (MIN) – to help other mothers who have faced or are facing similar experiences. Sheffield-based MIN offers women face-to-face support to help them to get the help they need to ultimately rebuild their lives. Laura says: “For all those mums out there that are suffering from emotional abuse you aren’t alone. Please don’t be afraid to come forward and ask for help. At MIN we provide a safe, warm, homely place where you can come with your child and get the support you need. For more information, call 0800 852 7414.

October 2018 Over the past three years, Age Better in Sheffield has been working with different partners to provide support to elderly people living in the city. Age Better has worked with partners such as Soar and Sheffield Mind to develop a range of projects to help end loneliness and isolation. The project was set up as part of the national Ageing Better Programme, funded by the Big Lottery Fund. By 2021 the aim is to empower people to reduce their loneliness with the help of volunteers and people engaging with the charity. Over the next three years, Age Better in Sheffield will be working towards launching their final toolkit in the Woodhouse ward, and aims to extend their support to others throughout Sheffield. For more information, visit www.agebettersheff.co.uk

November 2018 Chris Clarke was diagnosed with leukaemia, a form of blood cancer, not once, but twice, the first time being when he was just nine years old. He is immensely grateful for the support of the charity Anthony Nolan, whom he credits for saving his life, and for his family for being there during these “hard” times. As a keen walker, Chris decided to raise money for the Anthony Nolan charity, and after much research he settled on the 3000 Sunset Challenge, which sees walkers climb England’s four highest peaks – Skiddaw, Helvellyn, Scafell and Scafell Pike – in daylight hours. He says that he’s “chuffed to bits” with the progress he’s made, and has raised around £2,800 with his team of friends. 80 www.rmcmedia.co.uk

HEROES

December 2018 South Yorkshire Housing Association (SYHA) teamed up with Sheffield Care and Social NHS Foundation Trust (SHSCT) to create LivingWell, a model which ensures people accessing specialist mental health and learning disability support have the security of always being in their own home. Mike Hunter, Executive Medical Director at SHSCT, commented: “Receiving care in a rehabilitation unit miles away from your home just isn’t the best place to recover. As a housing association, we believe that your home is the absolute bedrock to everything; that you cannot be well without a good home and roof over your head.” For more information on LivingWell, contact 0114 290 0200 or email livingwell@syha.co.uk

March 2019 Walter Holland, who died aged 93 in February this year, was seen as a ‘local legend’. He is remembered as an ‘S6 treasure’, and could always be found knocking about the Sheffield suburbs. Little was known about Walter’s early life, however his family moved to Arbourthorne in 1936. When he was two or three years old he took a nasty bump to his head, which then led to meningitis, leaving him with severe learning difficulties. Walter was moved to the psychiatric hospital Middlewood Hospital. As Walter grew up, his pastimes varied. Perhaps his biggest passion was photography – or more accurately, having his photograph taken. Joan said: “He definitely liked to have them [photographs] with the ladies.”

April 2019 Nicola Roberts has been qualified as a first aider with St John Ambulance (SJA) since 2003. She is part of a medical response team but sometimes it’s more about providing words of comfort to people in stressful situations, such as at the football match she attended between Barnsley and Burton Albion on behalf of SJA in September 2018. The match was abandoned when one of the match day volunteers, Steve Croft, suffered a heart attack. With paramedics quickly on the scene, Nicola sought out the man’s family in order to reassure them. Thankfully, the story has a happy ending, and five months later the match was replayed and Nicola was part of a group led into Oakwell stadium by Mr Croft, who was by then fully recovered.

May 2019 Former professional snooker player Steve Harrison, who went on to found a club for people with learning disabilities in Sheffield, was awarded an MBE in this year’s honours list for his services to sport. Steve had set up this club in 2007, partly in memory of his father Ray, who himself was a paraplegic world champion in 1985. Since being established, the club has helped thousands of people with both learning and physical disabilities. In recognition of the inspirational work he has done, the local lad from S6 was given this prestigious honour and met Prince William. After hanging up his professional cue in 2005, Steve now teaches children not only how to play snooker, but also how to socially interact, improving their social skills and giving the kids confidence. There are currently around 60 members.

June 2019 Every two minutes, someone in the UK is diagnosed with cancer, and the chances are that all of us knows someone who’s experienced the disease in some way. Fifteen-year-old Eve Heathcote from Stannington knows all too well the impact cancer can have on a family, as her aunt was diagnosed with it five years ago. Although it’s not been an easy journey, Eve’s aunt is now thankfully in much better health, and Eve is raising money to support the charity that helped her family during such a tough time. Eve has challenged herself to complete 19 runs throughout 2019, and is donating the money to Sheffield’s Western Park Cancer Charity, which raises around £2million each year to help the lives of those living with cancer. www.rmcmedia.co.uk 81

Bigger and better VOLKSWAGEN, AUDI, SEAT AND SKODA SPECIALIST AUTOHAUS DOLBY HAS MOVED... hether you’ve chosen your car based on your lifestyle, or perhaps because you trust a particular make or model, you’ll know the importance of finding a garage that fully understands and uses the correct equipment for your vehicle. If you drive a Volkswagen, Audi, Seat or Skoda, help is at hand. Autohaus Dolby only work on Volkswagen group cars and vans, providing the sort of brand-specific knowledge you’d expect from a franchised dealer, only at independent prices. Earlier this year, Autohaus Dolby made the move from Century Street to their new premises on Barleywood Road, investing heavily both financially and in hard work to ensure they’re able to continue providing excellent service for their customers. Autohaus Dolby’s new garage is housed in a much bigger building, so owner Matt Dolby and his team have been able to move their MOTs in house, with space for more ramps and even a new automatic MOT bay installed, meaning they’re able to do more work and be more efficient, in turn allowing them to provide customers with even better service.

W

Their new street front location makes them easy to find, and once you step inside it’s instantly apparent how much time, money and hard work has gone into perfecting their new premises, though Matt insists they’ve still got a long way to go before it’s up to his high standards. The new workshop is modern and clean, with a huge and welcoming reception the perfect place for you to sit and enjoy a complimentary cuppa while you watch your car being worked on. “We put a huge amount of effort into making our customers comfortable,” says Matt. “Customer service and creating more positive and personal relationships with our customers is just as important to us as the manual work we do. They’re not isolated from the person who works on their vehicle so they can really get a good understanding of what goes into keeping it in great shape.” Autohaus Dolby use Volkswagen’s own service schedule, and even the tools they use are specially designed for Volkswagen group vehicles. “All modern cars need modern equipment and we are always up to date in this department.”

Matt works alongside Aran Haigh and Al Crookes, whose knowledge of such vehicles is second to none, with all three providing a service that exceeds all expectations. “We’re a small, friendly business and we make every effort to be easy to deal with,” says Matt. “We do a proper job, offer a more personal service than the dealer and we are considerably cheaper.” Whether you’re in need of a repair on an old split screen VW campervan or a service on a brand new model, Autohaus Dolby are there to get your car running at its best. You can even drive away in a free VW courtesy car so you can continue your day as normal. A minor service starts from £99 and a major service from £169 including VAT, parts and labour, timing belt and water pump changes, with all genuine Volkswagen parts at £346 for the vast majority of vehicles. With a 205mile range, which can be extended by 40 per cent in Eco mode, the Corsa-e can be charged at home and at designated rapid charge points, which allows it to be 80 per cent charged within 30 minutes. With 136bhp and 260NM of torque the Corsa-e does the 062mph time in 8.1 seconds and the 0-30mph time in 2.8 seconds. These are very quick figures for such a small car. So now you can drive your favourite hatchback, at speed without worrying about the environment.

Exotic looks The ultimate in BMW luxury has now become topless. The 8-Series was the concept which took the world by storm with its striking design. Now these concept looks can be even more exotic with the removal of the roof. Two engines will be offered at launch: a V8 petrol engine in the 530hp BMW M850i xDrive and a 320hp six-cylinder diesel in the BMW 840d xDrive. Performance figures are a 0-62mph time of 3.9 seconds for the former, 5.2 seconds for the latter. Both have a electronically limited top speed of 155mph with combined fuel economy figures of 26.6mpg for the former and 39.8mpg for the latter. Available to order now priced from £83,295.

Quality first A FRIENDLY, NO-NONSENSE APPROACH HAS SERVED RUTLAND AUTOS WELL OVER THE YEARS. t may look small compared to some of the huge garages owned by big name dealers across Sheffield, but when it comes to customer satisfaction Rutland Auto Bodies more than holds its own. The business on Rutland Road was founded in 1983 and owner Rod Eaton from Stannington has a simple code that has served him well over the years. “We’re very friendly and we are not here to rip people off. a fair price and I want people to come back because they feel they can trust me,” he says. From clutches, brakes, tyres and exhausts to body repairs, full and part resprays and MOTs, Rutland Auto Bodies do it all, including motorcycle MOTs. They have an impressive client portfolio, including fleet work for many of Sheffield’s top companies. But as well as having a top team of guys who really know their stuff, it’s the friendly greeting that makes new and long-standing clients feel as if they are in safe hands. “We get lots of customers who feel as if they’ve been treated badly elsewhere, especially women,” Rod says. “But we get a lot of people coming to us because they’ve been recommended by friends or family.

Meet the team

“That only happens when you offer competitive prices and high quality workmanship.” Constant upgrading of equipment including diagnostic machines means there are very few jobs on any make of car that Rutland Autos can’t tackle. These include classic cars, a passion for Rod since his youth. He’s helped to restore, repair and repaint many beautiful vintage vehicles including Jaguars, Beaufords and Minis. So whatever the job, large or small, take your car to Rutland Auto Bodies for a first class job and friendly service.
