PULSECONTENTS
EDITOR’S MESSAGE: any of you will have enjoyed a night at the dogs – you might even be a regular at Owlerton Stadium in Hillsborough. But have you ever wondered what happens to the greyhounds once they retire from racing? I met up with John Gilburn, managing director of Owlerton and chair of Sheffield Retired Greyhound Trust (SRGT), at the trust’s brand new facility in Wortley to find out. Not only did my understanding of these athletic animals change, but I was also fortunate enough to meet a truly inspiring team of people who dedicate their lives to finding the gentle, graceful dogs new homes. Read all about my visit on page 15. The SRGT team are not the only inspirational people featured in this month’s issue. Turn to page 26 to hear how a personal trainer, a gym owner and a local businessman are training for the ultimate endurance test – an Ironman triathlon. If their story doesn’t motivate you to push your limits even further, nothing will! As usual, we also have a gorgeous selection of summer fashions from the area’s boutiques (page 8), beautiful nautical homeware ideas to spruce up your house (page 20) and the latest news from S35 (page 36). If you have a story to share, are hosting an event that you’d like us to publicise or have photographs of a recent celebration or event, we’d love to hear from you. Email stephanie.burns@regionalmagazine.co.uk or call me on 0114 250 6300 (Monday to Thursday 9am-5.30pm and Friday 9am-4pm). If you have a business and would like to advertise in Pulse, please call Publishing Manager Helen Wragg on 0114 250 6300 or email helen.wragg@regionalmagazine.co.uk. ‘They’re ex-racers, mostly from Sheffield, and the trust acts as a kind of half-way house until they find their forever home. The biggest difficulty is homing black dogs but I prefer them; I think they look majestic.’
Dec the greyhound with Lynda and Roy Cattlin and kennel hands Zena Evans and Donna Williams
t was surprisingly quiet as I pulled up to Rotherham Gate Lodge in Wortley. I’d been expecting a chorus of howls, yelps and barks to greet me at Sheffield Retired Greyhound Trust’s (SRGT) new site and wondered if I’d come to the right place. (I should probably admit here that, having got lost on my way there, I’d been gallantly rescued from the depths of Howbrook by the trust’s chairman – and MD of Owlerton – John Gilburn, so I definitely was in the right place.) Nevertheless, when you think kennels, you think noise – and there was none. It turns out, greyhounds are fairly quiet creatures and, as I was soon to find out, this was just one of many little-known facts about the graceful animals. My visit came less than two weeks after their big move to Howbrook Lane. After nine years

at Gosling Moor Farm, in May they travelled a mile up the road to this brand new facility on the Wortley Estate. The new site, built by Designer Kennels, has room for up to 28 dogs at a time and, though there are currently only 15 there – aged from 19 months to seven years – new deliveries are arriving all the time. The SRGT is part of the national Retired Greyhound Trust, Britain’s largest single-breed animal charity which was founded in 1975 and now has more than 70 branches across Britain. Around 8,000 greyhounds a year retire from racing and in the last 40 years the trust has rehomed more than 70,000 of them. The Sheffield branch – the biggest of its kind in the north of England – was responsible for 113 of those rehomes last year, making it one of the most active in the country. But John is keen to point out that they are not rescue dogs. “They’re ex-racers, mostly from Sheffield, and the trust acts as a kind of

‘People think they need a lot of exercise but that’s a myth. At the track, a dog runs one race a night – usually once a week apart from training. As pets, they require two 20-minute walks a day, unless it’s raining, in which case they’d much rather stay inside.’ half-way house until they find their forever home. The biggest difficulty is homing black dogs but I prefer them; I think they look majestic.” The site is funded by Owlerton (along with a great deal of fundraising) and run by home finder Lynda Cattlin and her husband, kennel manager Roy, who live on site and since 2006 have dedicated their lives to caring for and rehoming the animals. “When we saw the advert for this job, I thought ‘I need to do it’,” says Roy. “It’s a cracking job and very rewarding. Greyhounds usually retire between three and five years of age, or earlier if injured. Basically, if it’s not good for them to race anymore, this is where they come. We rehabilitate them and, because they’re so used to set regimes at the stadium, it’s as if they go through puppyhood again. After about two weeks, you start to see their personality.” As Roy showed me round the new facilities, he explained what is needed to take care of a greyhound and I began to build a more accurate picture of their lifestyles. It was around 1.30pm by this point and, while there was some excitement when we first entered the kennels (cue the barking I’d been initially expecting), the dogs soon retreated to the comfort of their raised beds for an afternoon of snoozing. I was quickly realising that greyhounds, despite their sprinting prowess, are the laziest dogs around. “It’s like owning a large cat,” laughed Roy. “People think they need a lot of exercise but that’s a myth. At the track, a dog runs one race a night – usually once a week apart from training. As pets, they require two 20-minute walks a day, unless it’s raining, in which case they’d much rather stay inside.” You’ll rarely find a greyhound off the lead while on one of their brief jaunts. Their propensity as sight hounds to chase after anything small and furry means rabbits, squirrels and cats can distract even the best-behaved dogs. It’s for this reason that many are also fitted with a muzzle, which is provided to everyone who offers to walk one of the SRGT greyhounds. Seven days a week between 8am and 12noon, people can visit the trust and, after signing a simple volunteer agreement, enjoy a stroll around the countryside with a pooch in tow. A map, devised by kennel hands Zena Evans and Donna Williams, has one short walk, a wheelchair-friendly path and two longer routes to choose from. The walks also allow people who are thinking of adopting one of the greyhounds to become acquainted with them and their habits. If you take a shine to one, you can provisionally reserve them while you fully consider your options and discuss any

concerns with the SRGT staff. Every greyhound is neutered and vaccinated and comes with a walking coat, a collar, a lead and a muzzle. All that’s required is a mere £130 donation, and the approval of Lynda. “No dog leaves here without proper home checks so we are absolutely certain that the dog and home are suitable for each other,” said Roy. “We also offer plenty of aftercare advice and a pampering service, and we are always on the end of the phone to answer questions.” All too soon my visit had come to an end and I was saying goodbye to the team. But having taken a particular shine to Dec, a dark brindle greyhound who is SRGT’s longest standing resident of 17 months, I knew it wouldn’t be long before I was back up in Wortley, exploring the beautiful region with Dec at my side.

PROMOTIONFITNESS GARAGE
Jake training on the Wattbike at Fitness Garage (left) and (right) competing.
Fitness Garage tough guys Jake, Darren and Nick are gearing up for the ultimate test of physical endurance – the Ironman Triathlon. arathons? pah. Tough Mudder? easy. When it comes to endurance, there are few greater tests than the Ironman Triathlon – a 2.4-mile open water swim, a 112-mile bike ride and a 26.2-mile run, all in a maximum time of 17 hours. While most of us can’t imagine summoning up the strength and fitness to complete any one of those sections without needing urgent medical attention half way through, Fitness Garage body mechanic Jake Cook, co-owner Darren Woodhead and member Nick Pratt are now entering the final few weeks of training for this gruelling task. Former Royal Marines commando Jake is used to a high level of physical training and has already completed a number of triathlons without too much difficulty, including the Snowdonia Slateman Triathlon in Wales last month. But the Bolton Ironman on 19 July, which Jake is aiming to finish in just ten hours, will be his biggest challenge yet. Jake has been training Nick since February 2014, one month after the Ecclesfield gym opened, and has no shame in admitting Nick bullied him into this latest challenge. “Nick has his own company and a family and still finds time to train, so I couldn’t really say no,” laughs Jake. “In a typical week I’ll do around 20 hours of training, which includes copious amounts of run, cycle, swim, strength and Wattbike training – all in equal measure. I’m quite lucky because I can fit it around my clients at Fitness Garage. I’m also constantly Darren exposed to the (centre) members’

motivation, so that drives me along.” Nutrition is also a key part of ensuring success. Plenty of fresh vegetables, fruit and meat – along with protein supplements – make up Jake’s diet staples. During the challenge, he’ll also be snacking on his secret weapon, flapjack. “It’s common to get into a routine and go further than you should before refuelling. But once the tank is empty, it’s very hard to fill it back up, so I’ll be eating a flapjack or energy gel every 15 minutes.” Darren and Jake are not only doing the Ironman to see how far their limits can be pushed, but they’re also raising money for Macmillan Nick at the Cancer Support and Scope, Snowdonia respectively. Jake has already Slateman reached half of his £1,200 Triathlon target, thanks to the generosity of friends, family and Fitness Garage members. If you’d like to support the guys and donate to two worthwhile charities, visit www.justgiving.com/ironjake and www.justgiving.com/Darren-Woodhead. Fitness Garage are also holding a raffle to raise extra funds, with prizes including SUFC and SWFC tickets, a family skating ticket, a meat voucher from a local butcher, a luxury food and wine hamper and a spray tan. To find out more about membership or training for any kind of event – from a 5K to an Ironman – call 0114 438 5531 or visit www.fitnessgarage.co.uk. PROMOTIONLITTLE PINKIES
Whatever your beauty needs, the team at Little Pinkies can help you to look your very best
Shaney (left), Scott and Sheree
ou may have noticed a bright new addition to Lane End on your travels through Chapeltown recently. The distinctive pink sign of Little Pinkies belongs to Sheree Dalton and her partner Scott Booker, who opened the ‘ultimate beauty stop’ on 18 April and have already built up a loyal client base. With one salon in Manor Park already under their watchful eye, Sheree and Scott, who live behind The Barrel pub, jumped at the chance to open a new salon right on their doorstep. “I had been keeping my eye on the building for a while and, when the board went up outside, I rang the estate agent immediately,” explains Sheree. “It was 5.05pm on a Friday so I had an agonising wait over the weekend but called back first thing on Monday morning to enquire.” This passion for beauty is a world away from Sheree’s former job in accounts and payroll for a Sheffield business centre. Having retrained at Sheffield College in 2006 and offered her services to friends and family, she grabbed the opportunity to open her first salon in 2013, and has never looked back. “My working life is much more exciting now. I love meeting new customers and seeing the difference our treatments can make. With nails in particular, witnessing the transformation from short, brittle stubs to beautiful long natural nails, thanks to our strengthening treatments, is just great.” In addition to a host of nail services including nail extensions (£23), infills (£18), Shellac (from £6), manicures (from £10) and pedicures (from £12), Sheree and her team offer many more essential and pampering beauty treatments. The brand new vertical sunbeds (£1 per two minutes, £12 for 30 minutes and £20 for 60 minutes) provide a gradual, naturallooking glow, while the Crazy Angel spray tans (from £12) are
Y
perfect for an instant golden boost. Tailor-made facials (from £10), relaxing massages (from £15), waxing (from £6), a range of eye treatments (from £6) and nonperoxide laser teeth whitening (from £25) are also available. To tone up without having to hit the gym, the Flabelos machine is the perfect solution. Level 3 hair stylist Shaney Brindley, who has six years' experience having trained on Ecclesall Road and worked in a city centre salon, is also on hand with cutting, colouring and styling for men, women and children. Men’s barbering is £7.50, a ladies’ shampoo, cut and finish is £23 and children’s cuts start at just £5. Anti-wrinkle injections are administered by Dr Nabeel Makmahi, an experienced doctor who specialises in non-surgical aesthetic rejuvenation. To book a free consultation, simply enquire at reception and arrange a time for him to visit that suits you. Whether you’re looking for someone to take care of your essential beauty needs, or after a little pampering, Little Pinkies has a treatment for you. Call 0114 327 4420 or pop into the salon to make your appointment.

PROMOTIONFENWOOD ESTATES
Graham and Melissa
With more than 40 years’ experience in the building trade, Fenwood Estates have the know-how to make your dream home a reality. oving into a new home is one of the most exciting events in life. Once the hassle of mortgage arrangements, selling your existing property and the actual move is out of the way, making your new house feel like home is incredibly rewarding. But just imagine how much more exciting this could be if the home you were moving into was a brand new property that had been built, just for you, from scratch. This is exactly what Fenwood Estates is offering to people who own a plot of land and are looking for a trustworthy builder to create their dream home. Fenwood Estates is a longestablished, family-run development company. Graham Fennell and daughter Melissa Kroger are both passionate about their business and strive to provide high quality, eco-friendly and cost-effective new homes in South Yorkshire. Over the past five years, during the economic downturn in the UK, Fenwood Estates concentrated their efforts on small developments where a personal service could be given to each individual client. However, in addition to helping clients who might already own a plot of land and require a contractor, they also buy land and develop their own properties. If you’re not looking to build your own home but love the idea of owning a new build, there are a number of up-and-coming developments in various areas around South Yorkshire – keep an eye on www.fenwood.com for new projects. The company is flexible in terms of the types of property it

can construct – from a single extension or a ‘one off’ executive home to developments of 25-plus starter homes. Whatever the scale of the development, the level of service is always to a high standard. Graham began his working life as a carpenter and has now been in the construction industry for more than 40 years. Although the industry has been turbulent over the years, he has enjoyed growing and expanding to form the successful company that Fenwood Estates is today. Melissa joined the company over 14 years ago as a junior surveyor and has recently taken on the role of managing director. “The most enjoyable part of my job is handing over the keys upon completion to a happy couple or family,” she says. “I always feel proud that we can provide people with something tangible; a dream home of their own.” Fenwood Estates has won several awards with the Local Authority Building Control (LABC) warranty provider, including Best Housing Development and Best Sustainable Development, as well as the Doncaster Free Press Design and Build Award. For more information on any of Fenwood Estates’ properties and services, contact the team on 01302 249550. You can also follow @fenwoodestates on Twitter for the latest news and announcements.

PULSEIN BRIEF
Martyn Kemp Opticians set to expand Martyn Kemp Opticians (MKO), the largest independent group of opticians in South Yorkshire, is kick-starting its expansion plans with the relocation of the Stocksbridge practice to the new £42million Fox Valley development next spring. To be open seven days a week and headed by optometrist Andy Winnard, who has been part of the MKO team for ten years, the new practice will offer a wider choice of frames, more services and boast extra hitech optical equipment.

PFA commends England star Amy Former Barnsley College student Amy Turner has capped a successful period in her footballing career by being commended at the 2015 Professional Footballers’ Association (PFA) Awards. The 23-year-old, who is currently studying for a Post Graduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) at University Campus Barnsley, was nominated in the Young Women’s Player of the Year category. The nomination followed hot on the heels of Amy’s debut for the England women’s football team in March and saw her rewarded for her performances in defence for FA Women's Super League club Notts County Ladies during the 2014 season. Amy tasted even more success in her role as coach of Barnsley College’s under-19s women’s football team, who clinched the Association of Colleges (AoC) Yorkshire and Humberside Female Football League. Amy said: “It was a bit surreal on the night as I was sat next to the Chelsea players so it was strange to see them all clapping when they were showing clips of me in action on the video screen. It was a special night.”
The annual Dreamflight concert is being held at Newton Hall, Chapeltown, on Friday 26 June at 7.30pm. Dreamflight is a charity that takes children who are disabled and have life-restricting illnesses on the holiday of a lifetime to Florida, where they visit Disney and have the opportunity to swim with dolphins. Alongside the Sharon Berry Theatre School, a brass quartet, Wombwell Operatic Society, The Phoenix Singers and the R.U.3.A. choir, special guest Kate, who previously enjoyed the Dreamflight experience, will be singing. There will also be a raffle and a tombola.Tickets are £6.50 and include refreshments. They can be ordered from Esme Brooke on 0114 246 6185 or from Celia Aynsley on 0114 246 3246.
Chapeltown VE event Chapeltown Forum’s sold-out event at the Newton Hall to commemorate VE Day last month was a success. Junction 33 played live music for the audience to foxtrot, waltz, quickstep and jive along to in their forties-style costumes. Chapeltown Forum member Susan St Nicholas took to the stage dressed as Vera Lynn in her forties ENSA uniform. She opened with White Cliffs of Dover and followed with many wartime classics. Forum chairman John Housley said: “It has been wonderful to see the community come along and support our event and we are delighted with the response.” Kath Brittain, Forum secretary, decorated the room and supplied trays of traditional bread and dripping.
Summer fair Chapeltown Forum is hosting a summer fair on 11 July from 11am at Newton Hall. There is something for everyone, including cupcakes, sweets and a range of crafts such as card-making and sewing. There will also be a children’s fairground ride and a display of classic vehicles.

Sandra’s ride to success Sandra Nundy, a 63-year-old Fitness Garage member who we featured in our April issue, has completed a five-day, 450-mile cycle ride from Leeds to Paris. Sandra (right) raised more than £2,300 for Cavendish Cancer Care – with donations still coming in. “I feel so proud of myself and like I’ve really achieved something,” said Sandra, who was back at Fitness Garage just two days after returning from Paris to continue her training with body mechanic Jake Cook. “Jake’s advice was with me all the way – I couldn’t have done this without his training,” she said.

PULSEEDUCATION
Kip McGrath’s David Kaye explains why you should not allow your child to fall behind over the summer. ou've done it before. You know you know how to do it. But as you start school again in September, the months of doing other things and the lack of practice catches up with you. It's gone. You've forgotten what you once knew. Sound familiar? While all students regress during the summer, this regression hurts students who were already behind academically the most. It can be so incredibly frustrating for everyone when your child worked so hard all year to master their learning beautifully by summer only to find in September they can remember so little of it and have to start all over again. The tears, the frustration, and maybe even the anger mount as your child tries to make sense of why they can't do it anymore. It doesn't matter that it's fairly normal to forget, because forgetting what they once knew certainly doesn't add a lot to your child's self-confidence. Children generally regress most in mathematics. There may be many reasons for this, but largely it is because there is no mathematical equivalent to a public library allowing for leisurely interaction with maths in the summer. Writing is another skill that can regress considerably over the summer months. It is no accident that many teachers receiving new classes in September scratch their heads after the first week back wondering how their new students could have attained as high as reported before the summer break.

Clearly, if your child is already behind or has struggled so hard to catch up with their peers, you can't afford to simply allow the usual summertime regression. You all worked too hard to let it just go by the wayside. Your child's self-esteem deserves better. Your child's academic career requires better. The school year may be nearly over, but the story of your child's academic success does not need to be. Even while your child enjoys the extra hours of leisure and summer activities, keep investing the time and energy into your child's learning to make the next school year less stressful.

With new facilities and fantastic offers, there’s never been a better time to join Tankersley Park Golf Club. ave you ever considered joining a golf club? If so, now is the perfect time. With a fantastic location and superb course, Tankersley Park Golf Club (TPGC) has much to entice golfers for the 2015 season – including memberships with no upfront joining fee. All are welcome at TPGC, including beginners, juniors, ladies, gentlemen, pay-as-you-play, societies and corporate groups. Flexible membership options start from just £300 per year, with house memberships also available. For 2015, annual members’ fees are £1,025 for gents and £630 for ladies. Junior memberships, costing just £84, include free junior coaching. Both new and existing members will be pleased to hear that
H
TPGC has just finalised an agreement with the nearby Pete Cowen Golf Academy for all members to receive discounts on range balls and other items. They are also delighted to announce that Sport England has agreed to provide a grant of £62,660 to enable the golf club to develop a professional practice facility, including floodlit driving range bays, practice green and bunker. This will provide golfers with a vastly improved year-round practice facility. The land has a fascinating past, with many uses over the last few centuries. It was an oak forest, a civil war battlefield, a baronial deer park, a coal and ironstone mining area and even a battle tank testing ground before being transformed into a beautifully manicured golf course. Today, the modern, well-equipped clubhouse is the host of many social events and dinner dances throughout the year and boasts spectacular views over the surrounding countryside. Throughout the course, players enjoy fine views of the Wentworth area, Hoober Stand and Admiral Keppel’s Column. PROMOTIONBLUNDELLS
Blundells maybe a household name in the area but they refuse to rest on their laurels. Here’s why they continue to be one of the most progressive – and successful – estate agencies in the region. omeowners face a great deal of choice when searching for an estate agency to sell their home – and knowing which one to trust with the biggest sale of their life can feel like an impossible task. So what makes Blundells stand out from the crowd? As a company, they’ve been selling properties in Sheffield for almost 40 years. They now have 14 offices in the city and its surrounding suburbs, many of which have sales, lettings and financial services available under one roof. As the largest sales and lettings agent in Sheffield, their sales/lettings boards stand proudly in front gardens across the city, further enhancing homeowners’ awareness of this now-reassuringly familiar brand. Couple this with the many long-standing, experienced and loyal staff, who undergo regular training and development, and you’ve found a winning combination. An internal audit in April showed that half of all Blundells staff have been with the company for more than ten years – an incredible achievement in an industry that sees staff come and go with increasing regularity. Clearly, they’re doing something right – and this attention to detail results in a fantastic customer experience. As part of their continual investment in advanced technology to ensure they retain their position at the forefront of the local property market, they have recently introduced launch pad technology. This tablet tech speeds up the process of getting a property to market, meaning your home can now be seen online with 24 hours. These innovative marketing packages are complemented by strong utilisation of the two most popular online property portals in the UK – Rightmove and Zoopla – to achieve maximum exposure for your property. This secures more viewings and, in turn, ensures you receive the best possible price for your home. Additionally, a recent internal analysis of Blundells.com revealed huge visitor numbers to the company’s own website. Actively targeting online customers, they have invested in Google optimisation to promote their well-known brand even further. Net Promoter Scoring (NPS), an industry standard in assessing customer service, also allows them to scrutinise their approach
H

and hone their services to meet the precise needs of their discerning customers. All things considered, it’s little wonder that Countrywide, the company that owns Blundells, triumphed at the 2015 ESTAs (Estate and Letting Agent Awards), which is voted for by customers. Their record of success reached its pinnacle when they won the national gold award for Best Large Chain and the title of Best Estate and Letting Agency Group at this year’s awards. To find out how Blundells can help you, contact your local office on the details below. Blundells Unit 4 Market Street, Chapeltown, Sheffield S35 2UW Tel: 0114 208 6075 www.blundells.com

The secret of success The Blundells Chapeltown office will celebrate its 28th anniversary this year. To recognise this fantastic achievement, the team has expanded to continue the provision of the excellent customer service of which they are extremely proud. With not one member of staff serving less than ten years, you can be assured that each has an extensive knowledge of the local and surrounding areas. The office is open seven days a week – and until 8pm on week days – giving more opportunity for you to contact them to discuss your needs whether buying, selling or for general information. The sales team is complemented by their experienced mortgage adviser, Josh Evans, who is also available at a time to suit you.
