Customise your kitchen NOTHING IS OFF LIMITS AT SHEFFIELD, JUST BRILLIANT DESIGNS THAT REFLECT CUSTOMERS’ NEEDS AND BUDGETS. Who are we? Kutchenhaus is the UK’s fastest-growing German kitchen company, and a retail arm of Nobilia, the world’s largest kitchen manufacturer which produces over 3,000 kitchens a day. To this day it is still family owned with no shareholders. In Europe, German branded kitchens have been dominating the market for decades, outselling other contenders. But what makes a German kitchen so popular? German kitchens have a strong history within manufacture and engineering, dating back to the late 1800s. Over time, we have developed a solid reputation for continuing to build well-made and well-designed kitchens, and more importantly, kitchens that last. Our Factory The factory where we build our kitchens using state-of-the-art machinery, only uses high quality materials and components, all of which are rigorously tested. Everything is made to order, and components such as worktops are cut to size in the factory. We have our own fleet of delivery vehicles and all of our German efficiency and company structure means there is no middle-man adding costs along the way. Our product All our kitchens arrive fully assembled, with handles drilled and lighting seamlessly wired within the unit, eliminating the need for extra wire or motor casings on show. Worktops are cut to size and even hobs and sinks can be pre cut. Our automated units can open with the wave of a hand or lighting dimmed by the touch of a button. We can create anything you want with the end user in mind, whether tall, short or disabled. 14 www.rmcmedia.co.uk
The team From designers to part-time staff, the whole team come from a design background which means our focus and drive is to create great German design. We appreciate that buying a kitchen is a big decision, which is why we like to really take the time to get to know our customers and understand their vision. We believe your kitchen should have the same individuality as you have. Our commitment Kutchenhaus manage your entire project locally, from measure, design, installation and aftercare, eliminating the need for big call centres. We also work closely with a wide variety of branded suppliers – Bosch, Miele, Neff, AEG and CDA – to bring you luxuries at the best prices. Come see us Our Kutchenhaus showroom with onsite car parking is located on Attercliffe Road (A6178), one of the main arterial routes east from the city centre linking with the M1 at junction 34. If you’re looking for ideas for your new kitchen, our showroom is packed with clever design solutions and a wide variety of
sample options, so you are sure to find something to suit your project. If you want an ultra-modern, sleek gloss handle-less design with hidden lighting solutions and top of the range appliances, we can create that in store! But of course, we can create more traditional shaker-style kitchens with clever interior space organisers too. Nothing is off limits here, we just want to create brilliant designs that reflect our customers’ needs and budgets. We also love to show off the gadgets available to add a little extra flair to your kitchen. Be sure to ask us about our selfopening (servo-drive) cabinet fronts, a MUST for tech geeks! We like to make use of our in-store AEG and NEFF appliances with cooking demonstrations to show you how to get the best out of your appliances; keep your eye on our social media for these events but feel free to ask us for a demo. HEROES
‘19 for 2019’ TEENAGER EVE HEATHCOTE IS PUTTING HER BEST FOOT FORWARD TO RAISE MONEY FOR THE CHARITY THAT HELPED HER FAMILY THROUGH AN IMMENSELY TOUGH TIME. e all know the statistics. Every two minutes someone in the UK is diagnosed with cancer, and the chances are that every single one of us knows someone who’s currently fighting, has won, or has unfortunately lost their battle with the disease. Fifteen-year-old Eve Heathcote from Stannington knows all too well the impact that cancer can have on a family, as five years ago her aunt was diagnosed. Though it’s not been an easy journey, Eve’s aunt is now in much better health, and Eve is putting her best foot forward – literally – to raise money for the
W

charity that helped her family through an immensely tough time. Eve has challenged herself to complete 19 runs in 2019, donating the money she raises to Sheffield’s Weston Park Cancer Charity. While her aunt was undergoing treatment, it was Weston Park that helped support both her aunt and the rest of the family through the tough time. “When I would go to see my aunt I noticed that there were some people who weren’t getting the support they needed, but everyone needs help when
they’re going through something like this,” says Eve. “I wanted to make sure nobody felt alone, and even if I can only help one person, it’ll all be worth it.” It wasn’t a question in Eve’s mind that she’d start raising money for Weston Park as soon as she could, and an already very active young woman, it didn’t take her long to decide on the mammoth task she has ahead of her. So far, Eve has completed one run each month, already raising over £250 for Weston Park. And no two runs are the same either, with Eve taking part in any and everything she can, from 5 and
HEROES
10k runs to park runs and even obstacle courses and paint runs. Every event Eve takes part in is raising money for its own chosen charity too. Eve’s mother Tina takes care of the entry fees for Eve’s runs, meaning that as well as raising money for Weston Park, there are countless other charities benefitting too. Taking part in 19 runs in one year would seem a lot for even the most seasoned athletes, but Eve has no plans to stop raising money for Weston Park when she reaches her goal. Her work won’t stop in between either, as when she’s not running she’s fundraising in other ways – you can see Eve and mum Tina at the Bolehill Rite Trax festival selling a stall full of goodies on Saturday 3 August. ‘19 for 2019’ might be the latest challenge that Eve has set herself, but it’s certainly not the first she’s embarked on. At just eight years old, even before her aunt fell ill, Eve donated 11 inches of her hair to The Little Princess Trust, a charity that provides real hair wigs to children and young people with hair loss, and funds vital research into childhood cancer. And Eve’s hair journey didn’t stop there. After her aunt lost her hair following chemotherapy treatment, she did something many of us wouldn’t be strong enough to do. “I offered to shave my head when my
aunt first got cancer,” says Eve. “But she said not to worry. Then a while later she said ‘Eve, do you still want to do it?’ and I said yeah, I just thought, why not!” With her locks having grown back, it’s green hair that’s next on the agenda for Eve (she hopes), as she says she’ll do almost anything to help out and raise money for the charity that did so much for her family. Even after just five minutes into my conversation with Eve, it was clear that she is an immensely compassionate, driven and selfless young woman. I found myself in awe of her unwavering and inspiring determination, and left
with no doubt in my mind that Eve will achieve if not surpass her goal. If you know of any upcoming events you think Eve might like to take part in, please visit the ‘Eve’s 19 for 19 Challenge & Fundraising’ page on Facebook.
If you’d like to donate money to help support Eve you can visit: uk.virginmoneygiving.com/TinaHeathcote To donate or find out more about Weston Park Cancer Charity visit: www.westonpark.org.uk
• Weston Park Cancer Charity raises around £2million each year to help improve the lives of people living with cancer • They have raised over £22million since it started in 1994 • Weston Park Hospital is the region’s only specialist cancer hospital, providing care to thousands of patients across South Yorkshire, North Derbyshire and North Nottinghamshire • Weston Park Cancer Charity want to help through: * Funding vital cancer research * Providing support to ensure patients and families manage their illness effectively * Enabling local people to access the very best cancer care services • The money raised for Weston Park Cancer Charity is used to fund things the NHS can’t, going the extra mile for people living with cancer

Singing the blues JAZZ ARTISTS JACQUI DANKWORTH (VOCALS) AND CHARLIE WOOD (PIANO AND VOCALS) ARE MAKING A RETURN VISIT TO BRADFIELD FESTIVAL OF MUSIC FOR A JOINT CONCERT ON 24 JUNE. INTERVIEW BY PATRICIA HUNT. PH: You came to play at the Bradfield Festival of Music in 2017. Are you looking forward to coming back? JD and CW: Very much. We remember the great welcome we got, the beautiful setting and the lovely church. The concert was so well organised and very well supported with a great audience, and we enjoyed the good vibes from beginning to end. PH: How strong were musical influences on you as you grew up? JD: I think I took it all for granted. There was just music all the time, with my Dad composing throughout the day and evening, and my Mum playing music all the time. It was really varied music across the spectrum as well, from Schonberg to jazz. It was such a rich experience in my childhood – so much fun too – my Dad was a laugh a minute! CW: Nobody else in my family has been as mad as me to become a professional
musician! My elder sister played the piano to a high standard and my brother sings and composes, but neither of them have taken it up as a profession. It’s worked out well for me though. PH: Did you meet through music? JD: Yes. We first met when Charlie was still living in the States and a mutual friend who was a drummer suggested we play some music together. That went really well, and two years later Charlie
contacted me to say that he was moving to the UK and suggesting that we worked together. We began working with each other and it grew into a relationship. We have been a duo ever since, always working together and growing together in and through our music. PH: What are you working on at the moment? CW and JD: We are working on a completely new blues programme which we will be bringing to the Bradfield Festival. We love playing and singing the blues, and so we have built a new programme which is a journey through the blues. We will play through the journey, and also narrate it along the way. The Bradfield Festival of Music runs between Saturday 22 June and Saturday 29 June 2019. To find out more, visit https://bradfieldfestivalofmusic.co.uk

DO YOU REMEMBER?
The football teams might look familiar (above) but what sport are these gentlemen playing (left)?
Ball games allowed DO YOU RECOGNISE THESE SPORTING TEAMS FROM YESTERYEAR? port is the theme of this month’s Do You Remember and our old friend Barry Couldwell has come up trumps with two local football team line-ups. Does anyone have any information about the teams? But there’s a wild card in the form of our third photograph. Can anyone identify what the sport is, who is playing it and where? We reckon it’s a sporting pastime that’s long since fallen out of favour... unless you know otherwise? Last month’s trio of photographs on the theme of school days brought a rush of nostalgia for Sixer reader Megan Allen (nee Green) who recognised instantly her younger self in the snap of Bradfield Secondary School’s Class 4B from 1962/63 (above right). There she is third from the left on the second top row. Megan says: “How well I remember the picture, I still have my copy! Mrs Bagshaw was our form teacher, she taught English, and her husband was also teaching at Bradfield. Still in touch with some of the ‘pupils!’! Nice memories...” The other two photos showed a Worrall School group from around 1919 (top) and Loxley Junior School from 1933 (lower).

Real Pet Grub has been open for Delivery business for ten amazing years and Service the time truly has flown by. During Available that period the team has been able to help thousands of customers with various health and diet problems belonging to their four-legged family members. It’s been a real pleasure to meet all the clients, making new friends every day and sadly losing a few too - but those wonderful pets won’t be forgotten. When Real Pub Grub was founded a decade ago, the aim was to create an environment where customers felt welcome and became friends - rather than just another generic business where people went to collect their pet food from. They’d like to think they achieved just that and would like to thank every customer who has come through the doors and helped make this pet shop with a difference such a success. It’s been a whirlwind first ten years, they hope they’ve made a positive difference in the lives of pets and their owners. Now here’s to the next ten years!

Grand garden IF THE THOUGHT OF TACKLING YOUR OUTDOOR SPACE IS TOO MUCH TO BEAR, WHY NOT GIVE THE EXPERTS A CALL? fter a spring of sunshine and showers, we are all crossing our fingers and hoping for a dry, warm summer so we can get outside and enjoy spending time with the family or relaxing in the sunshine with a cool beer or glass of wine. Whether your outdoor area is a rambling garden with little or no structure or a small yard that would benefit from a make-over, now is the time to take a long, hard look at how to maximise the potential of those underused spaces. If you haven’t done so already, it will soon be time to liberate the sun loungers and patio furniture from their winter hideaway and you will surely want to break out the barbecue so you can make the most of the glorious summer days and warm evenings. Sounds great in theory, but if your outdoor space is over-run with weeds or the patio is uneven and the lawn is a dustbowl, can you bear the thought of spending hours of backbreaking work before it can be transformed from an eyesore to a recreation area that you can really begin to enjoy and be proud of?

If your heart sinks at the prospect of spending yet another summer forever mowing the lawn or keeping on top of the weeding, it’s time to call in the professionals. J K Fencing & Landscapes Ltd is a small family firm with over 20 years of experience in the fencing and landscaping industry, employing a small local workforce of reliable and trustworthy people all year round. The company offers a first class, professional installation service, giving value for money without cutting corners. Their use of quality products, with an ever growing choice of mediums available, can help achieve a low maintenance, high impact outdoor space – from turfing and paving, to resin
bound aggregate, artificial turfing and composite decking pads. The team are happy to provide ideas and good, honest advice to help you achieve the best solution to your needs, whatever they may be – J K Fencing & Landscapes are just as comfortable taking on the big landscaping projects as they are putting up fencing and hanging gates, and every installation is approached with the same level of service and professionalism – the only limitation is your imagination and, of course, your budget. If the prospect of tackling that outdoor space yourself is a bit daunting, why not get the experts in to give you a free noobligation quote. No high pressure sales tactics and no deposits needed – payment is only made upon completion of the work to your satisfaction. And of course, everyone employed by J K Fencing & Landscapes is fully insured to carry out work on your property. Nortons: Our story THE HEATING COMPANY LOOK BACK OVER 175 YEARS IN BUSINESS. ohn Norton & Son was established 175 years ago as plumbers and suppliers of lead, sanitary and bar fittings. Our earliest work records date from 3 March 1844, although the company probably traded before this date, carrying out plumbing and lead work for the breweries and private residences in Sheffield. In 1855 Nortons began carrying out work for the Consumer Gas Light Company, later to become the Sheffield gas company, installing gas light meters. From these early beginnings, Nortons became a major retailer and installer in Sheffield of bathroom
J
and sanitary fittings, kitchen furniture and appliances, heating, boilers and fires. We opened in 1925, Sheffield’s first retail showroom in their premises on Church Street. We became a major supplier and installer of cast iron open fire ranges with side ovens, stoves, open fires and fireplaces. The 1930s saw Nortons introduce the AGA cooker and later in 1946 the Rayburn cooker, to Sheffield. John Norton & Son
continues to be a range cooker and multi-fuel stoves dealer with our own dedicated sales, service and installation team located at 169 Rutland Road, Sheffield, S3 9PT.

Transform your life LET G&M HEALTHCARE WITH ALEVERE TRANSFORM YOUR LIFE AND YOUR BODY. dread to think where I would be now if I had not started the Alevere programme when I did. I was deteriorating fast as a person.” James Jayawardena’s weight loss difficulties started in April 2016 when his GP diagnosed him with high blood pressure, high cholesterol and prediabetes. “Something had to give as my weight had really started to creep up over the last few years, and, at 22-and-a-half stone, I was starting to become increasingly aware that if I did not do anything about it I was exposing myself to potentially irreversible and serious health implications.” James was worried that his demanding lifestyle would mean it was impossible for him to lose weight, however, as soon as he started on the Alevere programme he was convinced that the team at G&M Healthcare could help him. “My initial concerns were about being hungry, as I ate quite large portions and would often graze during the day. I worked out that I was eating 600/700 calories between meals and I was really worried; I didn’t need to be. “I was apprehensive going into the programme, but once you’re in, the staff walk you through everything, and you feel at ease straight away.” Alevere quickly taught James that losing weight is about understanding food and the effects of various ingredients in food – ensuring you don’t deprive yourself but you take a regular, balanced approach. “I began Alevere with an open mind and the thing that I found most refreshing was that the programme was not about dieting but about making permanent adjustments to my lifestyle. “I started losing weight very quickly, it was like an overnight transformation. My clothes started to feel too big and
“ I

James before…
people started to notice too, you don’t get any more motivational than that. “Losing weight does not mean giving up everything you enjoy eating. In fact, the pleasure of eating something ‘unhealthy’ is better when it becomes an occasional treat, rather than a regular and ignored part of your diet.” After three months on the programme James had lost almost seven stone, and was starting to feel much more confident again, and has since continued his weight-loss journey. “I was losing 3kg every week, so it was great to get on the scales and realise how much I had lost overall – and that made me want to carry on. I liked the routine of the programme and the big weekly weight loss was a great motivation, I became very focused. “With good planning and listening the programme is adaptable, I wouldn’t say it was easy, it took willpower, but I didn’t feel hungry and my energy levels were noticeably higher to myself and others. “Alevere isn’t a diet, because it changes your philosophy completely. It teaches you to eat normal but healthy food, and retrains you on how you should eat. “The programme is now part of my daily life without me being obsessed with it and by what I can and can’t be eating. I have changed how I eat for good – I eat regularly and I still have
what I want, but I don’t snack all the time.” James has discovered a whole new way of life, and, though he knows there is no magic wand to losing weight, he has seen that with help and support it is achievable. “Alevere has totally changed my life. People always comment that I am now a completely different person and approach things in a different way. “Grace, Sarah and all the staff, therapists and nutritionists are extremely knowledgeable and there’s always as line of communication and support available and you feel like part of a little community. “I firmly believe in Alevere and want others to see how it has worked for me. If I had one regret it would be that I did not start the programme sooner.”

Know your carats OUR LATEST DIAMOND BUYING GUIDE LOOKS AT THE AFFECT THE WEIGHT OF THE STONE CAN HAVE ON THE PRICE YOU PAY. arat is the traditional unit of measurement we use to describe the weight of a diamond or coloured gemstone. It is the equivalent of 0.2g and allows us to be accurate in accounting for very tiny differences in weight since one carat is itself divided into 100 ‘points’. A stone of half a carat (ct) may also be described as 0.50ct or 50 points. The weight of a diamond is of course closely related to its size, but it also has a relationship to the stone’s cut. Two diamonds may have the same carat weight but look different in size if one is cut a little deeper than the other. As discussed in our article about diamond cuts, it is not always an advantage to simply choose the largest stone; it is important to look at all the details before making a purchase. A shallower stone might look a little larger, but it may also appear dull and lifeless as it does not interact with light in the most effective way. All the pieces pictured
C
alongside this article have a total carat weight of 1.00ct. You may notice that a piece containing a cluster of diamonds with a total weight of 1.00ct costs considerably less than a piece set with a single diamond of the same weight. This is because the price of a diamond increases with size, so the combined price of, for instance, ten 0.10ct stones is less than the price of one 1.00ct stone. Certain carat weights are particularly popular: it is desirable to own a stone of half a carat or one carat. If a stone reaches these sought after weights the price can increase more dramatically as there is more demand for them. An awareness of the effect carat weight has on price can help you to make an informed decision about what diamond to buy. We often choose round brilliant cut diamonds weighing around 0.46ct, just under the half carat
mark, as these have the approximate diameter of a half carat stone without the price increase that comes once that size has been reached. They can therefore offer a good buy, with the same visual appearance for a reduced price. A similar choice is available when looking at other sizes such as 0.90ct and 1.00ct stones for instance. If you’re not sure what size will work best for you our experienced team can talk you through the options and help you find your perfect stone. ou’ve had the dates in your diary for months, learned the line-up by heart and done plenty of ‘research’ into improving your drinking stamina – now you’re more than ready for the festivities to begin. Tramlines 2019 is but weeks away and we can’t wait. To make sure you’re best prepared we’ve looked at everything you need to know to enjoy a memorable weekend, from the acts you don’t want to miss to the food that’s on offer, even what’s happening at the ‘Fringe’. Now it’s just a matter of counting down the days…

Nile Rodgers
Annie Mac
YOU READY? Phill Jupitus
Although timings have yet to be confirmed (at the time of writing), it looks like Cora Pearl will be the first band on the main stage when the doors open at 3pm on Friday 19 July. Sea Girls and Circa Waves will then warm things up nicely for the arrival of Manic Street Preachers who, hopefully, will be playing all their hits. Friday’s headliners are Northern Ireland’s Two Door Cinema Club, who will be performing tracks including What You Know, Something Good Can Work and Talk. The Leadmill stage will be open on Friday and has The Futureheads, Clean Cut Kid and The Seamonsters amongst its line-up whilst The Library Stage will have Red Rum Club, Himalayas and Plant amongst others. Saturday sees the curtains pulled back

on the T’Other Stage, which will play host to Casey Lowry, Anteros, Another Sky, Georgia, Becky Hill, Jade Bird and then the fabulous Annie Mac. You’ll have to juggle your day well if you want to catch the Everly Pregnant Brothers, Miles Kane, Reverend & the Makers, Johnny Marr and The Courteeners on the main stage. The comedy also kicks off on Saturday in the Leadmill tent and there should be decent crowds for Thomas Green, Daniel Muggleton, Alistair Barrie and Reginald D. Hunter. Shame headline the ‘Leadmill Live’ later in the evening. You’ll need plenty of stamina for Sunday and, if you’ve got the ability to split yourself in two, you’ll be all the better for it. Let’s start with the comedy which sees Shappi Khorsandi and Phill Jupitus added to the line-up followed by Joe Carnall’s new project, Good Cop Bad Cop, and Drenge who’ll be live afterwards. You might want to head to the T’Other stage though, who has The Rifles, Peter Hook & The Light, Tom Grennan and Doves playing. And in a complete headspin you’ll not want to stray too far from the main stage who has Sleeper, Lewis Capaldi, Rag ‘n’ Bone Man and then headliners Nile Rodgers
& Chic. Oh, and Happy Mondays have got to fit in somewhere too. If you’re the type of person who has the fear of missing out, all we can say is, good luck, how you can juggle that line-up is anyone’s guess. There probably won’t even be time for a beer. Throw in the Into The Trees family area, food from Cutlery Works, the fairground and plenty of ale offerings and you’ve got, potentially, a weekend to remember. Tramlines you’ve excelled yourselves. Now we just need the weather.

SURVIVAL GUIDE
Entry/Exit There are two entry and exit points: The East Gate on Penistone Road or West Gate on Middlewood Road. At the gates you will be asked to present your paper ticket, which will then be scanned and exchanged for a wristband. The gates will be open for entry 3-8.30pm on Friday and 12-8pm on Saturday and Sunday. The site will remain open until 10.30pm.
Travel/Transport Tramlines recommends you leave the car at home as there is no functioning drop off space and no parking for the festival on-site. Both the YELLOW and BLUE route trams take you to the festival site and tram stops are numerous stops across the city. For the blue line use the Hillsborough stop and for the yellow line use Hillsborough Park. There are plenty of bus links that can help you get from home to the festival site. Please see Travel South Yorkshire’s website (www.travelsouthyorkshire.com) to plan your journey. There will be a black cab pick-up spot operating from the Hillsborough Leisure Centre Car Park. This location will be sign-posted from the main site. For private hire taxis, Tramlines recommends 60 www.rmcmedia.co.uk
City Taxis who have an app for both Android and Apple phone users, this app can be found via the City Taxis website.
Access Tramlines are proud to have been awarded the Bronze Level of Attitude is Everything’s Charter of Best Practice demonstrating a commitment to accessibility. Here’s just a few ways they have made the site open to as many people as possible: • There will be a PA ticket scheme for individuals who would be unable to attend our events without bringing a personal assistant • A viewing platform with a stewarded accessible toilet is located at the Main Stage. In order to gain access to the viewing platform, you need a viewing platform wristband. This also comes with a lanyard that can be worn by a personal assistant or companion so that they can join you on the platform. • There will be a stewarded accessible toilet located beside the viewing platform at the Main Stage. A viewing platform wristband is required to gain access to this toilet. There will be other non-stewarded accessible toilets at every toilet block throughout the festival. • Assistance dogs are welcomed onto the site.
Credit: Oliver Young
• There will be general warning signs around the Main Arena if strobe lighting will be used. • There will be a First Aid tent located in the Main Arena. There will also be Medics and First Aiders on patrol around the event.
Food & Drink When you’re not dancing away to Doves or shimmying to Chic, you’ll probably work up something of an appetite (and a thirst) – we all know that quality food and drink are a vital part of any festival experience. With that said, Tramlines has teamed up with Cutlery Works to bring a brand new curated street food area to the festival. Popular vendors Shed and Froconut lead the line up, with many more to come. The street food area at Tramlines 2019 will take its inspiration from the now-famous food hall, with communal seating and chilled out atmosphere, alongside an exciting array of street food vendors from the local area catering for meat eaters, vegetarians and vegans alike. Outside the new Cutlery Works area, there will be the amazing Meatless Farm, mouth-watering pies from Pie Minister, Get Wurst, The Gravy Train Poutine, and Proove Pizza.

Fancy enjoying Tramlines in a more luxurious way this year? Choose either the VIP Weekend Ticket OR VIP Upgrade your existing ticket and enjoy the festival in style. The £50 upgrade includes queue jump, posh loos, access VIP bar and VIP seating area.
Family friendly Not only do under 12s get to enjoy the festival for free (accompanied by a paying ticket holder), there is also a jampacked schedule of activities to keep everyone occupied. Into the Trees is the dedicated family area and Tramlines have pulled together some absolute treats to keep the young ones entertained. The pop-up cinema will be running across the weekend, if you’re in the mood to kick back with a movie. Responsible Fishing will be taking the reins on Saturday and Sunday’s activities by bringing their woodland workshop – whether it is rock balancing or foraging for materials to create woodland crafts. Jamboree Arts will be hosting a circus school on Saturday and Sunday too. Walk the tightrope or try your hand at juggling and acrobatics in the big top!
hilst the main focus of attention will be on Hillsborough Park during Tramlines weekend – and rightly so – there is so much more happening in and around Sheffield city centre as part of the unofficial ‘Fringe’. Here’s just a taste of what’s on offer.

PEDDLER A stone’s throw from Hillsborough Park, Peddler Warehouse, at 92 Burton Road, has plenty of reasons to keep the party going, namely with the appearances of Gilles Peterson (20 July) and Horse Meat Disco (21 July). They will be ably supported by the likes of Banana Hill, Nice Like Rice, Apricot Ballroom, Raw Silk, Winston Hazel and Dan J. Early bird tickets are available for £10 otherwise they’ll be £15 in advance or £17.50 on the door. Visit peddlermarket.co.uk to find out more. THE FORUM KITCHEN & BAR Devonshire Street’s favourite hangout has a pretty decent line-up for their Fringe festivities on Saturday 20 July. Appearing throughout the day will be Hotel Lux, Creeping Jean, Ørmstons, Diving Station, Bad Bug, Lio, The Gallery and My Pet Fauxes. Headlining will be Sheafs, who of course, played the main festival last year (and very good they were too). Quite a coup.
If the sun is shining you can take advantage of their outdoor terrace and maybe even a slice of pizza and a cocktail or two. SHEFFIELD CITY HALL NMC Live will be taking over the Sheffield City Hall Ballroom once again with the finest post-everything sounds and noise for Tramlines Fringe 2019. The line-up for Saturday 20 July includes AA Williams, And So I Watch You From Afar, Body Hound, Boss Keloid, Mono, Svalbard and Trigger Thumb. Tickets are £6.72 (advance), including booking fee. Visit www.nmclive.co.uk or www.sheffieldcityhall.co.uk to find out more. THE LEADMILL The ‘Ledders’ will definitely be keeping the vibe going with two Tramlines after parties, on Friday and Saturday night – and there’ll be free entry with your Tramlines wristband (until midnight) as well as some of the best drinks offers in town. Friday sees the popular club night, Gaga, take centre stage, with a night of indie classics and the best in new music. On Saturday you can dance the night away at SONIC and The Beat Club – the best indie rock bangers as well as Motown, disco, funk and soul.

Vital work FIND OUT WHY VOLUNTEERING AT WESTON PARK CANCER CHARITY IS SUCH A REWARDING EXPERIENCE. t Weston Park Cancer Charity we aim to create a better life for everyone living with cancer, both now and in the future, but we cannot achieve that ambition on our own. This month, we are shining a spotlight on the huge difference our volunteers make to the lives of those affected by cancer and we think the best way to find out about our work is to hear directly from the people who give up their time.
A
Steve Murphy Just before Christmas, I rang the end of treatment bell; it was like winning the lottery, so when the opportunity came to volunteer in support of the vital care and treatment I (and so many others) receive(d), I jumped at the chance. I recently volunteered at Oakwell Stadium, as my son Carl was taking part in a Weston Park Cancer Charity football match. When I was asked if I fancied being the charity mascot, Westie, I thought why not. I spent the day waving, high fiving and posing for photos and when Carl‘s team scored I was on the field with my arms out like an aeroplane. I loved it.
Kate Murphy Last year, my husband Steve was diagnosed with cancer and since then, it’s made us realise just how much Weston Park Cancer Charity do for not only patients, but their families, too. I decided to become a volunteer to give something back; a few hours every now and then is nothing for what they have given us – my husband’s life. Being a volunteer means you get to meet lots of different people; some want to stop and talk about what Weston Park means to them, others ask why you’re giving up your time – and yes, some make you cry, but others make you laugh and I think it’s always good to talk. Without volunteers, Weston Park wouldn’t be able to continue the work that they do, so if you are reading this and thinking: “do I want to become a volunteer?” please give it a shot. You’ll really enjoy it – I know I do – and you’ll make lots of new friends.
Carl Mellor When my dad, Steve, became an inpatient at Weston Park Hospital, I saw first-hand the reason places like this need support and it really hit home to see what patients and their families are actually going through. All of the staff are amazing and it has been a real eye opener to see the vital services funded by charitable donations, and how that supports so many people. I recently volunteered at a bucket collection at Barnsley FC and it became apparent very quickly that there are so many people cancer affects across our region, and in so many different ways. It has been humbling to be given an opportunity to hear other people’s success stories, as well as the sadder side. Try a taste of tradition ...AT A BRADFIELD BREWERY PUB. he Nags Head at Loxley is the original Bradfield Brewery Tap since being acquired by the brewery in 2008. The pub has recently undergone works to extend the premises and refurbish the internal areas. Being of modest size and capacity, the extension has allowed for increased internal seating and a more spacious area for casual gatherings. Homemade food is served Tuesday to Sunday and the menu offers traditional pub food including their signature Homemade pies, offered with a free pint of one of the Farmers Ales, from just £6.50. A spacious outdoor seating area boasts the ideal setting for the warmer days, and with popular walking destination Dam flask nearby, it provides the ideal stop off after a leisurely summer stroll. The pub is family and dog friendly. The King & Miller in Deepcar was acquired by Bradfield Brewery last year and re-opened in October 2018 after an extensive refurbishment. With Farmers Ales at £2.50 a pint, a snooker table and a warm, welcoming atmosphere, the pub has been greatly received.
T
Family and dog friendly, the pub has a great ambience where everyone is welcome. Works to reinstate a kitchen on the premises is nearing completion and food will be served from mid-June. The food serving times are Monday to Saturday 12-8pm and Sundays 12-5pm.Visitors will soon also be able to enjoy the large beer garden, a family-friendly area ideal for alfresco dining with great space for the younger ones to enjoy a run around. Further plans include extra seating, allowing for a larger dining area. This work is due to start late summer 2019 with completion hoped for before Christmas. John Gill, director of Bradfield Brewery, commented: “Our aim when first starting out as a brewery was to produce traditional real ales that would stand the test of time and I believe we have succeeded in doing so with our range of Farmers Ales that are increasingly enjoyed by many. “One of the things we consider important to the brewery industry in general is that the traditional pub establishments remain in our society. We have therefore endeavoured to ensure that our pubs continue
to offer the traditional pub environment, with contemporary additions to cater for the changing modern society.” Sheffield based Whitehead Commercial Interiors were commissioned to work with Bradfield Brewery on both pubs. Alison Powell, on behalf of the company, comments: “At Whitehead Commercial Interiors we believe the key to our success is our flexibility. Every project is unique and we take an incredible amount of pride in providing bespoke solutions. Bradfield Brewery is local to us and we welcomed the opportunity to work with them on both the King and Miller and Nags Head. “Working closely with Richard, Lisa and John, it became apparent how hands on they are as a client. This enabled us to create a good working relationship with them during all project stages from design conception to completion on both projects. It is also fantastic to see a once tired, run down, boarded up local pub, brought to life by a small independent brewery and doing so well. Well done Bradfield Brewery! We look forward to future projects and working again with Bradfield’s great team!” Bradfield Brewery Limited Watt House Farm, High Bradfield, Sheffield, S6 6LG Tel: 0114 285 1118 Email: info@bradfieldbrewery.co.uk www.bradfieldbrewery.co.uk

EVENT
Hot to trot THIS YEAR’S STANNINGTON CARNIVAL TICKS THE BOXES FOR NOSTALGIA – AND EXCITING NEW ADDITIONS TOO.
t’s been over 35 years since the first ever Stannington Carnival was held, but locals still get just as excited about the annual event. Last year saw a new committee take over and breathe fresh life into the carnival, building on it’s already great success and ensuring everyone’s favourite events and activities were still there to be enjoyed. This year’s carnival takes place on Saturday 13 July at Stannington Park, with the theme of Once Upon a Time expected to add an extra sprinkling of magic to the event. The theme will feature prominently across the carnival, with stalls and volunteers dressed to impress, and children invited to take part in the fancy dress competition. There are no strict rules, and kids can feel free to interpret

the theme how they wish, who says it can’t be once upon a time in Narnia, outer space or even Gotham City? As always, there will be plenty for all the family to get involved with on the day. Firm carnival favourites Punch and Judy will be back for 2019, as will the funfair, classic car exhibit, the everpopular Scruffs dog show and music from the Stannington Brass Band and Training Band. This year’s carnival will also welcome local dance schools who will be putting on shows in the arena, and some may even invite you up to have a go yourself… “The belly dancing club drew quite a crowd last year,” says committee member Bob Mynors. “I’m sure it’ll do the same this year and people will give it a try.” We all love a bit of tradition, and while many of us will be excited to head to Stannington Carnival for a bit of nostalgia, they’ve got plenty of new and exciting additions to the day too. The Sheffield Kite Flyers will be in attendance for the first time, putting on an impressive display that will be visible for miles around. They’ll need Mother Nature on their side, but if this year is anything like the last we’ll be enjoying delicious ice cream from Our Cow
Molly in record-breaking temperatures. Since Stannington Carnival first began, it has raised over £65,000 for community organisations and projects that have a direct benefit on the lives of local people. Last year’s raffle was the most successful on record, and the carnival raised an impressive £5,000 overall, benefitting groups including; Friends of Stoneface Creative, Action for Stannington, Christ Church, Stannington Library, Friends of Nook Lane, Underbank Chapel, Stannington Infant School, Stannington Methodist Church and more. If you’ve got an item to donate to the raffle, a classic car you’d like in the exhibition or if you’d like to help out on the day, get in touch with the team now to find out how you can help make Stannington Carnival 2019 the best one yet. ‘Down on the farm’ ON SATURDAY 29 JUNE, THERE’S FARMYARD FUN TO BE HAD AT OUGHTIBRIDGE GALA. n archetypal British event, the summer gala has long been a way for friends, families and neighbours to gather and celebrate the sunny season. While still an event brimming with tradition, the Oughtibridge Gala have given their annual gathering a bit of a twist. This year, on Saturday 29 June, there’s farmyard fun to be had by all as Oughtibridge Gala looks set to bring people together ‘Down on the Farm’. There will be plenty of farmyard inspired games for you to have a go at, including wang a (mini) wellie, dodge a cowpat, hook a duck and find a golden egg. You can even have a paddle in the river with Oughtibridge Canoe Club (book early to ensure you get a go). Find yourself in awe of Jonathan Sherwood’s wood sculptures, get up close and personal with the ferrets and watch their impressive displays, and be blown away by the Red Barrows’ ‘acrobarrowics’. A firm gala favourite, Scrufts is back again, so don’t miss stopping by the dog show arena to check out the pretty

pooches of Oughtibridge village, or seeing the best in show crowned later in the day at the main arena. There will also be a variety of talented local musicians putting on fabulous shows throughout the day, including the Oughtibridge Brass Band and Training Band – who might just let you try out their instruments, the Yorkshire Tea Skiffle Band and the Family of Schools Choirs. And we all love a bit of healthy competition, don’t we? Even if you don’t want to get involved yourself, come down and see what fabulous creations the village bakers, artists, crafters, growers and photographers have entered in this year’s competitions.
If looking at the entries from the village bakers gets your mouth watering, don’t worry as there will be plenty of food and drink at the gala to keep you well-fuelled for the day. Herds of volunteers will be serving savoury and sweet treats, as well as hot and cold drinks all afternoon from in and around the Pavilion. You’ll have a hard job resisting their tempting selection of delicious cakes, pastries, donuts and Belgian waffles, as well as ice cream from Our Cow Molly. Oughtibridge Gala has been held for over 40 years and it continues to be one of the largest and safest in the area. All money raised at the gala goes back into helping the community, and over the past years the gala has donated around £22,600 to local charitable causes. If you’d like to get involved and volunteer to help organise next year’s gala, give your details to the raffle staff or contact the team through their website. COMMUNITY
Judith Stewart, leader of the 131st Sheffield (Grenoside) Rangers, with BT engineer Frank
Community calling THE 131ST SHEFFIELD (GRENOSIDE) RANGERS HAVE TAKEN OVER A WELL-LOVED OUGHTIBRIDGE LANDMARK. he red telephone box is disappearing from our landscape as the rise of the mobile phone makes it seem like a curio from a bygone age. But an increasing number of these redundant kiosks are being put to inventive uses, and one in particular on Cockshutts Lane in Oughtibridge has been adopted by the 131st Sheffield (Grenoside) Rangers. (For those not in the know, the Rangers are the over-14s of the Guiding movement). Local resident and Ranger leader Judith Stewart was at the heart of the plan to rescue this little piece of British design history and turn it into a library. As part of BT’s “adopt a kiosk” scheme, communities are able to take over a decommissioned telephone kiosk for £1. “I did it initially because I couldn’t bear to see it go to rack and ruin and become an eyesore,” Judith says. “Red phone boxes are part of our heritage and I wanted to preserve it. I later discovered other uses for kiosks and thought it would be a way of serving the community too. “My first few calls to BT kept being diverted to call centres where the person I was speaking to didn’t even know what
T
a red phone box was. The first guy thought I wanted to buy a red box to keep my mobile phone in!” Once that hurdle was overcome there were more physical challenges ahead. Judith says: “Firstly, we couldn’t even open the door and had to chop down all the ivy and other foliage growing over and around it. The gardener of the neighbouring property kindly helped, we dug out the soil from around the door and found the original flagstones. “We had the phone removed next by BT and received some invaluable help from Frank, the BT engineer who volunteered on his days off to replace the broken windows and door hinge. He also repaired the light for us. We then cleaned and repainted it, bought some second hand shelves, fixed up a noticeboard and installed an honesty box. “I finally completed the application form and paid the princely sum of £1. The conditions to adopt meant that you had to be the landowner, the council, a voluntary group supported by the council or a registered charity. I only qualified for the latter, as I am a volunteer Ranger Leader. I received enthusiastic support from our local
Girlguiding Commissioners so we went ahead with the adoption.” After consulting neighbours the most popular suggestion was for a library. Judith changes the books around when they start to look a bit dog-eared and also places handicrafts that the Guides and Rangers have made, usually at Christmas and Easter. In summer and autumn local people share their produce too such as apples, rhubarb and plant cuttings. There’s also a community notice board to advertise local events or businesses and Judith empties the honesty box every few days. Judith recalls: “After our Christmas Fair last year we had some decorated mugs filled with chocolates and sweets. A group of runners came past and stopped for a breather. When I checked the kiosk later, all the mugs were still there but the sweets and chocolates had gone... there was £9 in the honesty box though!” All money raised goes towards the upkeep of the kiosk (paint, lightbulbs etc.) Any profit goes towards Rangers as they rely solely on volunteers and donations. Willow work PUPIL’S COMMUNITY HISTORY PROJECT BRINGS VETERANS BACK TO LIFE IN S6. legacy with a difference has now taken up residence at Bradfield Dungworth Primary School thanks to the work of year three, four and five pupils. They have created two life-size sculptures of World War Two veterans as part of a far reaching community history project to learn more about the area’s involvement in the 1939 to 1945 period. The two eerie figures have been crafted under the guidance of celebrated willow artist Caroline Gregson. The school has been learning about the area’s involvement in World War Two as part of the National Lottery Heritage Fund-backed project that was launched in 2018. The pupils started out by sketching pictures of veterans – the best drawings were then incorporated into the final design. The Dungworth and Bradfield area was a hive of military activity from 1939 to 1945 with over 5,000 troops billeted in the area as defence forces against German attack. The study is working to uncover the roles of Dale Dyke and the other nearby

They were key strategic points and had high wires constructed around their circumference in a bid to stop low level bombing as planes headed for the armament factories in the East End of the city and other areas. Local people have been contributing to the project by giving their own accounts of life in the war and sharing photos and artefacts from the period. Project manager Richard Godley said: “Educating future generations on the history of this area is central to our project. The pupils were eager to learn and the end result is quite stunning. Their creation is set to be a lasting legacy for our project.” Dungworth and Bradfield District Heritage Group were awarded £50,000 from the National Lottery Heritage Fund for the work as well as support from Bradfield Parish Council. Proud to help WHEN YOU CHOOSE TO SHOP AT PJ SISMAN ELECTRICAL, YOU’LL GET HIGH QUALITY PRODUCTS – AND PRICELESS ADVICE. wner of PJ Sisman Electrical, Philip Sisman took over the store from its previous owners and his former employers in 1976 when they decided to retire. Philip started work at what was then known as Coopers Radio and TV in 1965 at the age of 15, and as he says, “the rest is history”. The Wicker store really has become an integral part of the community and its real, old-fashioned charm is part of what keeps their customers coming back time and time again. The brilliant reputation of PJ Sisman Electrical has continued to grow under Philip’s ownership, so much so that they’ve recently expanded the business and opened up a second store on Middlewood Road in Hillsborough. Philip’s son, Adam, has been working at PJ Sisman for the past 25 years, and Philip hopes that when the day comes for him to retire, his son will be the one to take over the family business. For now though, the two work together to run the shops, splitting their time equally between the two locations for a change of pace.

Supplying goods to both retail and trade customers, PJ Sisman Electrical are the largest stockists of electrical elements and cooker parts within the Sheffield area, and are specialist suppliers of cooker motors and controls, cables and sockets, bulbs and tubes, fire bars and much more. Their new Hillsborough store is a mirror image of the original Wicker location, offering their local customers the same products and great service, without the need to travel to the other side of town. And with parking available you won’t have to worry about how to get things back to your car. Philip is proud to be able to supply his customers with the “hard to come by bits and pieces” that can’t be found in larger chain stores. As an independent store, PJ Sisman Electrical have control over what they stock and sell, meaning that they can listen to the needs of their customers and bring in the products that they really need. The years of experience that Philip has behind him far exceeds that of the majority of employees of most major electrical and

DON’T ALLOW YOUR CHILD TO FALL BEHIND OVER THE SUMMER. ou’ve done it before. You know you know how to do it. But as you start school again in September, the months of doing other things and the lack of practice catches up with you. It’s gone. You’ve forgotten what you once knew. Sound familiar? Your child has regressed. While all students regress during the summer, this regression hurts students the most who are already behind academically. Just imagine: it can be so incredibly frustrating for everyone when your child worked so hard all year to master their learning beautifully by summer, and then to find in September he/she can remember so little of it. Time to start all over again. The tears, the frustration, and maybe even the anger mount as your child tries to make sense of why he/she can’t do this anymore. It doesn’t matter that it’s fairly normal to forget and forgetting what he/she once knew certainly doesn’t add a lot to your child’s self-confidence. Children generally regress most in mathematics. There may be many reasons for this, but largely it is because there is no mathematical equivalent to a public library allowing for leisurely interaction with maths in the summer. Writing is another skill that can regress
Y
considerably over the summer months. It is no accident that many teachers receiving new classes in September scratch their heads after the first weekend back wondering how their new students could have attained as high as reported before the summer break. Clearly, if your child is already behind or has struggled so hard to catch up with his/her peers, you can’t afford to simply allow the usual summertime regression. You all worked too hard to let it just go by the wayside. Your child’s self-esteem deserves better. Your child’s academic career requires better. The school year may be nearly over, but the story of your child’s academic successes does not need to be. Even while your child enjoys the extra hours of leisure and summer activities, keep investing the time and energy in to your child’s learning to make the next school year less stressful. If you are interested in tuition for your child, visit www.kipmcgrath.co.uk/sheffield-north.

Room to grow Children in Rivelin Primary School’s Foundation Stage have had a fantastic spring creating their own allotment in their outdoor area. Nicola Leggatt, foundation stage leader, said: “We didn’t have much greenery in our playground and when we asked the children what they would like they asked for fruit and vegetables they could grow and eat themselves. We have grown potatoes, tomatoes, beans peas, carrots and herbs. It’s been fantastic for the children to really appreciate the processes involved in growing their own food and understanding where food comes from. They have learned so much. “Parents and grandparents have also got involved donating seeds, soil, plant pots and gardening tools. We have a grandparent, Steve who comes in every week to help us. A highlight of the project will be harvesting our vegetables – the children have voted to make chip butties with the potatoes and make carrot and coriander soup!”

Sheffield artist’s ‘uncanny’ show Eerie empty depictions of usually bustling Sheffield urban spaces is the focus of the forthcoming exhibition, Uncertain Spaces: Kenopsia, featuring paintings by Andy Cropper at Cupola Gallery from 8 June to 6 July. Choosing to be called a ‘realist’ painter instead of a ‘photorealist,’ Andy intentionally chooses to allow an element of painterly mark making rather than eliminating it with a blended photographic perfection. Approximately 40 paintings will be on exhibition; oil on canvas and oil on board. Sizes vary from 25 x 25 cm up to 1 x 1m. Work for sale. Prices from £450-2,500.

The MG ZS comes with plenty of added extras, including cruise control, Apple CarPlayTM and USB connection for smart phones.
Big personality RHIANA HUGHES GETS BEHIND THE WHEEL OF THE MG ZS. or as long as I can remember, I’ve liked the look of larger cars. Not to be ignored, commanding the road and commanding attention, some may think them obnoxious. Maybe it’s because I’ve spent my life standing at just 5’2” that I’m so attracted to the idea of finally feeling a little bit further off the ground, or maybe it’s the stubborn side of me wanting to prove that I’m not “too small for a big car”, as I’ve so often been told is the case. Whatever the reason, I jumped at the chance to head over to Eric Stead to give one of their most popular MG models a spin. Pulling into the showroom, I couldn’t wait to jump out of my car and up into the MG ZS, but before I did so I couldn’t help but notice that the showroom itself seems to have had a bit of an upgrade. Recently refurbished, the Eric Stead showroom looked shiny and new, with sharp modern lines and new company branding mirroring the sleek, bold designs of the cars sitting inside. The team at Eric Stead know their stuff when it comes to MG. All of the staff at this family-run business have a great depth of knowledge about the models on offer. You’ll even find a couple of gorgeous vintage MGs when
F
you visit their showroom. Sales advisor Dennis Berry handed over the keys after familiarising me with the new features inside. I’d been given the Exclusive MG ZS in metallic Black Pearl, which comes with all the same features as the Explore and Excite models in the range, plus some added extras including cruise control, Apple CarPlayTM and USB connection for smart phones. As soon as I’d got the hang of the sat nav, in went a Peak District postcode, and off I went. It can take a while to get the hang of a new car, but before I knew it I was confidently weaving between parked cars and effortlessly climbing through the gears. Despite the car’s larger road presence, it was surprisingly nimble, and by the time I reached a national speed limit sign any sense of nervousness was
gone as I put my foot down and allowed myself to enjoy the smooth drive. I couldn’t return the car to the showroom without giving its reverse camera a try, so on my way back from the Peaks I pulled into my local supermarket to try it out and pick up tea at the same time, two birds, one stone, right? Though used to sensors on my own car, the reverse camera took bay parking to a new level. Despite still sheepishly checking over my shoulder, the camera gave me the added confidence that even with the sensors beeping, I was going to leave the car park dent-free. Upon my return to the showroom, I was reluctant to hand the keys back to Dennis, and with 0% finance options and a seven-year warranty available, I was more than tempted to keep the car for myself.
