Four girls on one educational journey… meet the stars of Westbourne School’s own film drama. Isla Mirfin, sisters Eleanor and Evie Reynolds and Head Girl Abi Heywood
Coveted awards WESTBOURNE SCHOLARSHIPS TAKE CENTRE STAGE t Westbourne School – the only co-educational independent school in Sheffield offering first class education to girls and boys from the age of 3 to 16 – it’s not just about celebrating and nurturing excellence, it’s about sharing it. Every year Westbourne offers scholarships to all Year 6 children in the area for entry into their senior school (Year 7) in the September of the same year. Scholarships – reduced fee places – are offered in five categories: Academic, Music, Sport, AllRounder and the new category of Drama and Performing Arts. Candidates for this coveted award have increased year on year and Westbourne was delighted with the number of children who applied in 2017 and the demonstrable talent they brought with them. Entry into Westbourne School is not dependent on scholarship examinations as the school prides itself in being an academically non-selective school. It’s quite fitting that in the same year as Drama and Performing Arts has been included to the Scholarship categories that Westbourne is celebrating Head Girl Abi Heywood receiving a top scholarship in Drama for sixth form study at Sedbergh School in Cumbria.

“Westbourne is not just about celebrating and nurturing excellence it is also about sharing it through its scholarship awards…” 8 Pulse | www.pulsemag.co.uk
Westbourne is proud of its co-educational status
Abi joined Westbourne from neighbouring Ashdell in 2012 following her sister Jess, who joined in 2010. Both girls have enjoyed success both academically and theatrically. Girls seem to thrive particularly well at Westbourne. Another former Head Girl, Lizzie Peck, is now studying at Oxford after spending 12 years at Westbourne. So, when it came to creating a new film promoting the school, it was decided to tell the story of just one girl’s progress. But to bring the story to life, it actually took the talent of four pupils who between them take the heroine through every phase of school life, from her first day in PreSchool through to GCSEs. “We are so pleased with what we have achieved with this film,” said Westbourne Headmaster John Hicks. “Many congratulations to our four young stars and thank you to everyone involved”.” To see the film visit: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LFr78s2KLro @PulseRMC
Westbourne School is proud of its coeducational status and firmly believes that the benefits of mixed classes can be seen in the achievements of all its pupils. Westbourne has proven experience that girls and boys can and do flourish in a mixed environment. It believes that co-education helps both girls and boys to have a better understanding of each other and develops the whole child and their emotional intelligence – children mix socially in the world beyond the classroom and Westbourne believes they should be able to do so in school time too. Why not go along to the Open Morning on Thursday 9 March? See for yourself just how the successful environment at Westbourne School can help your son or daughter develop and succeed, both academically and personally. Think big, think bike! TONY GIBB OF FULL GAS BIKES SAYS THE TOUR DE YORKSHIRE IS A MASSIVE EVENT TO LOOK FORWARD TO. ony Gibb was a professional cyclist for 15 years, winning world and national titles, and is now a commentator and presenter for Eurosport, as well as owner of Full Gas Bikes and Full Gas Cycling events. He says the Tour de Yorkshire is coming, and you’re probably not ready! He said: “I was lucky enough to see the Tour de France in Yorkshire first-hand. “I was hosting a hospitality event and when I was first asked to do it in March, one of the comments was: ‘we will book your hotel nearer the time’. I politely suggested they might want to get on that sooner rather than later! “I’ve also been lucky enough to watch the tour’s final day in Paris on several occasions, sometimes just at the side of the road. I’ve worked on it in various guises and had a few cheeky VIP trips, so I have seen first-hand the sheer size of the operation. “The Tour de Yorkshire is coming, and it

finishes on your doorstep, right outside our front door at Fox Valley. Don’t think this is going to be some watered-down version of the French race. Although only in its third year, this legacy event is a favourite of the pros. It’s one of the hardest short-stage races on the calendar and features the hardest climbs in Yorkshire – and most of them at that. “A bike race is coming, what’s the big deal? Well, about 180 pro cyclists, 60 team cars, 20 coaches and mechanics’ trucks – do you want me to start on the event organisation, the press, the motorbike outriders, police, two helicopters, a plane? This event is going to be brilliant for Sheffield, Stocksbridge and the surrounding area. Oh, and I forgot to mention the sportive, the amateur support ride for all-comers, on the morning of the final stage – you can add another 5,000 riders, friends, family, cars… “Are you getting a feel for the scale of this thing? Trust me, you haven’t seen anything yet.”

PREPARATIONS FOR THE FINAL STAGE OF THE TOUR DE YORKSHIRE – WHICH FINISHES AT FOX VALLEY – ARE WELL UNDER WAY. PHOEBE SEYMOUR LOOKS AT WHAT WE CAN EXPECT TO SEE. et on your bike, sport your team’s colours or simply turn up and celebrate. Tour de Yorkshire will be back on Sunday 30 April. The 2017 Tour de Yorkshire, sponsored by Maserati, will offer a unique mix of Tour de France delivery, combined with Yorkshire hospitality and beautiful scenery, resulting in a dream day for cycle enthusiasts. Taking place on the third and final day of the Tour de Yorkshire, stage three of the journey will start in Bradford and finish at the Fox Valley shopping centre in Stocksbridge. Stage three will be a gruelling 194.5km and riders will be making their way up to Grassington via Ilkley, before heading back down through Skipton, Keighley, Halifax and Huddersfield, to the finish line at Fox Valley. There will be eight challenging climbs including familiar local climbs Côte de Midhopestones and Côte de Deepcar. And if you’re a keen cyclist, you will have the chance to ride the same roads ahead of the pros, including crossing the finish line, as part of the Sportive Countdown. Choose from a 45km, 75km or an ambitious 100km route, or take part in Cycletta – a 45km women’s only bike ride.

Run by Welcome to Yorkshire, Tour de Yorkshire’s other big sponsors include Dimension Data, Tissot, Le Coq Sportif, Mavic, Asda and Aunt Bessie’s. Yorkshire Bank have also teamed up with Tour de Yorkshire to create Bike Libraries – a project that will see old and unwanted bikes that would have otherwise been thrown away or left to gather dust, donated repaired and loaned out to families free of charge. It is their mission to make Yorkshire the first place where nobody, because of their circumstances, is deprived of a bike. If you have old bikes that you no longer use, donate them to one of Yorkshire’s 51 donation stations. To date, the project has provided more than 31,000 opportunities for young people to ride a bike. There have already been 17 roadshows and as a result of huge demand, which has seen attendance figures surpass 1,000, Welcome to Yorkshire has announced two extra Tour de Yorkshire roadshows on the run up to the main event. There are 13 more roadshows taking place all over the region between now and the end of March, with Whitby and Holmfirth being the newest additions to the calendar. Join the @PulseRMC
fun at Lofthouse, Sheffield’s closest roadshow event, which will be taking place on Thursday 23 March. Welcome to Yorkshire is teaming up with local authorities to run the shows in towns and villages along the 2017 route and information is being shared to residents and businesses on how to get involved, build excitement and maximise the benefits of global media coverage between 28 and 30 April. Details on road closures, the annual sportive and Welcome to Yorkshire’s various cycling legacy projects are all being discussed, along with ways people can become an official Tour Maker or take part in the popular Land Art competition. So whether you are a budding pro or a casual cyclist, there’s plenty to look forward to at this year’s Tour de Yorkshire. WHATEVER THE OCCASION AND WHATEVER THE BUDGET, PINK BOUTIQUE HAS AN OUTFIT TO SUIT YOU.
Fashion to get you noticed ink Boutique of Birdwell prides itself on fulfilling its motto, ‘fashion for women who love to be noticed.’ Every lady is special to them. When choosing mother of the bride or groom wear, they recommend you book an appointment for a dedicated and personal service for up to two hours. Owner Sandie Wenham has been in the fashion industry for over 40 years, having started out as a sales assistant at a boutique in Mexborough at the age of 16. She has been self-employed since 2000, and with a wealth of experience, she is well placed to provide an excellent service at Pink Boutique. “We’ve been offering mother of the bride outfits for eight years,” says Sandie. “I have a background working in boutiques that offered, what we used to call, ‘a madam service’ where customers would take a seat, have a cup of tea and we would show them dresses. “This is an approach I’ve continued to use and we are always receiving cards and flowers from customers thanking us for our personal service. We get to know all of our customers and they often become friends.” Everything is colour coordinated in the boutique, with matching hats and accessories on display, making your shopping experience all the more inspiring. There are dresses for every budget including hats for hire. Just tell Sandie or another member of staff your price range, style and size, and they will be happy to assist you. Studio with the personal touch FROM YOGA AND EXERCISE CLASSES TO SPORTS THERAPY AND ALTERNATIVE TREATMENTS, KINETIC HAS A RANGE OF SERVICES TO KEEP YOU MOVING.
W
hen you have a back problem or an injury, it’s understandable to be wary of diving back into your old exercise
routine. At Kinetic, Ecclesfield, you will find a light and airy studio space with specialist instructors on hand to help you get the most out of your exercise classes, whilst moving safely. Classes in the studio are very different to those at your typical gym. Because Kinetic’s classes only cater for up to seven clients at a time, their instructors are able to give a more personal and hands-on service, constantly coming round and checking clients’ postures. Gail Stephens is the newest instructor at Kinetic, bringing a variety of yoga classes that are sympathetic to any problems your body may have. Gail has been practicing yoga for over 20 years and has her own mobile yoga business called Dancing Warriors. She specialises in hatha yoga and mindfulness – both of which are available at Kinetic. Kinetic’s new timetable also includes postmenopausal yoga and yoga for absolute beginners. Gail also offers yoga nidra – a technique to relax the body and mind. With her soothing tone and understanding approach, Gail is the perfect yoga instructor to gently guide you back to yourself. 26 Pulse | www.pulsemag.co.uk
Meanwhile, the studio is also home to clinical Pilates instructors, Julie Duffin-Green and Kerry Brears who are trained to help improve postural positions. Through Pilates, they aim is to help make your body stronger, more stable and pain-free. The Pilates classes can be used to treat a number of medical conditions and can be tailored to your specific needs. When it comes to group classes, clients of similar ability are placed together. Mixed and men-only classes are available too. Julie also offers reformer Pilates, which uses a piece of sports equipment first designed by Mr Pilates himself in the early 1900s. Kinetic is the only centre on this side of town that offers the therapy, which is made up of circuitbased and one-on-one sessions.

But exercise classes are not the only thing the centre offers. Kinetic pride themselves on offering a number of services under one roof, including sports therapy, sports podiatry, chiropody and osteopathy. They also offer a number of alternative therapies such as Tai Chi, acupuncture, reflexology, hypnotherapy and many more. Sports therapist Gayle Cotton opened Kinetic in June 2013. She has worked in sports therapy for over 20 years and has worked with many sports stars including a handful of high-profile boxers and local teams such as the Sheffield Steelers and the Rotherham Football Club. When people have back problems, they tend to opt for a chiropractor but depending on the condition, it may be more beneficial to see an osteopath. Kinetic is one of very few places in the area that provide osteopathy. Osteopath Emily Coulthard-Jones is Westfield-registered and has a dynamic approach. Osteopathy is a way of detecting, treating and preventing health problems by moving, stretching and massaging a person's muscles and joints. It is based on the principle that the wellbeing of an individual depends on their bones, muscles, ligaments and connective tissue functioning smoothly together.

‘Classes in the studio are very different to those at your typical gym. Because Kinetic’s classes only cater for up to seven clients at a time, their instructors are able to give a more personal and hands-on service, constantly coming round and checking clients’ postures.’ It is therefore used to increase the mobility of joints, relieve muscle tension and enhance blood supply to tissues, helping the body to heal. It is often gentler than chiropractic, yet achieves the same results. Osteopaths tend to have a more holistic view of the body, whilst chiropractors tend to focus on the affected area. However, chiropractic and osteopathy are both approved by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence and both use a mix of spinal manipulation, spinal mobilisation and massage. If you have back problems, book an appointment with Kinetic to find out which therapy will best suit your needs. So whatever your condition and whichever therapy you are interested in, you will find them all under one roof, along with a dedicated team of specialists, at Kinetic. Visit the website to view their full list of services and new studio timetable. Plus when you set up a standing order to pay monthly for classes, you will receive a free massage and a 15 per cent discount on your first osteopathy or sports therapy session. ACHIEVE YOUR GOALS ‘I CHANGED MY WHOLE LIFE WITH THE HELP OF G&M HEALTHCARE’, SAYS KERRY HARRIS WHO SHED AN AMAZING SEVEN STONE WITH THEIR HELP. f you had told me at the beginning of the year that 2016 would be the year I lost weight, I wouldn't have believed you.” Kerry Harris had struggled with body and self-confidence issues for many years, often yo-yo dieting and attempting to lose weight but always going back to old habits. But when the strains of carrying the extra weight began to affect her family life, it became impossible to ignore. “Before I started Alevere, I hated my body. My weight was beginning to affect my confidence and was making me feel very unhappy in all aspects of my life. I stopped doing activities I loved, spending time with my children and avoided situations where I felt my weight would be judged.” Stepping on the scales left Kerry feeling low, but it also gave her the determination she needed to tackle her weight problem head on. “I hadn’t weighed myself for years. I imagined I would weigh about 13-14 stone, so when the scales told me I was 17st 6.5lbs I couldn’t believe it. “I had seen advertisements for G&M Healthcare with Alevere and decided I was going to give it a try. I was so sceptical to begin with, since I had always been trying to lose weight - I remembered how exhausting it was trying to find the perfect diet plan or weight loss ‘trick’.” Combining high quality, flavoursome foods and state of the art ultrasound technology, it was the maintenance stage of the Alevere programme that Kerry found most difficult. But, under strict medial supervision, she soon realised how important it was to enabling her to manage her weight long term. “The fast rate of weight loss kept me motivated and the therapy sessions gave me the support I needed to stay on track and help me understand more about my relationship with food.” So far, Kerry has lost over seven stone and uses her own weight loss as a tool to spur herself on. “As the weight came off, I could not believe how good I felt and how different I looked. I lost almost seven stone in 21 weeks and I feel amazing. “Seeing the weight come off gave me

encouragement to keep going and I now feel that I know how to eat properly. The plan has taught me to think about what I am putting into my body.” Like everyone, Kerry has hit the occasional rut but she says she tries to combat it by switching up her workout routine. "My weight is no longer ruling my life. Before, I let the weight define me and my boundaries. Now, I don't. I make the rules. "I've learned to be patient about the rest of the weight loss," and she reminds others to do the same. "Instead of always being down on yourself for how much more you have to go, look back at all you've already done." Kerry is such a convert to the goals and outcomes of the programme that she has now joined G & M Healthcare as a weight loss therapist, helping to motivate others along their weight loss journeys. @PulseRMC
“All the staff at the clinic were very caring and professional and I wanted to give something back to the programme. “ I
dread to think where I would be now if I had not started the Alevere programme when I did. I was deteriorating fast as a person.” James Jayawardena’s weight loss difficulties started in April 2016 when his GP diagnosed him with high blood pressure, high cholesterol and pre-diabetes. “Something had to give as my weight had really started to creep up over the last few years, and, at 22-and-a-half stone, I was starting to become increasingly aware that if I did not do anything about it I was exposing myself to potentially irreversible and serious health implications.” James was worried that his demanding lifestyle would mean it was impossible for him to lose weight, however, as soon as he started on the Alevere programme he was convinced that the team at G&M Healthcare could help him. “My initial concerns were about being hungry, as I ate quite large portions and would often graze during the day. I worked out that I was eating 600/700 calories between meals and I was really worried; I didn’t need to be. “I was apprehensive going into the programme, but once you’re in, the staff walk you through everything, and you feel at ease straight away.” Alevere quickly taught James that losing weight is about understanding food and the effects of various ingredients in food – ensuring you don’t deprive yourself but you take a regular, balanced approach.
“I began Alevere with an open mind and the thing that I found most refreshing was that the programme was not about dieting but about making permanent adjustments to my lifestyle. “I started losing weight very quickly, it was like an overnight transformation. My clothes started to feel too big and people started to notice too, you don’t get any more motivational than that. “Losing weight does not mean giving up everything you enjoy eating. In fact, the pleasure of eating something ‘unhealthy’ is better when it becomes an occasional treat, rather than a regular and ignored part of your diet.” After three months on the programme James had lost almost seven stone, and was starting to feel much more confident again, and has since continued his weight-loss journey. “I was losing 3kg every week, so it was great to get on the scales and realise how much I had lost overall – and that made me want to carry on. I liked the routine of the programme and the big weekly weight loss was a great motivation, I became very focused. “With good planning and listening the programme is adaptable, I wouldn’t say it was easy, it took willpower, but I didn’t feel hungry and my energy levels were noticeably higher to myself and others. “Alevere isn’t a diet, because it changes your philosophy completely. It teaches you to eat normal but healthy food, and retrains you
on how you should eat. “The programme is now part of my daily life without me being obsessed with it and by what I can and can’t be eating. I have changed how I eat for good – I eat regularly and I still have what I want, but I don’t snack all the time.” James has discovered a whole new way of life, and, though he knows there is no magic wand to losing weight, he has seen that with help and support it is achievable. “Alevere has totally changed my life. People always comment that I am now a completely different person and approach things in a different way. “Grace, Sarah and all the staff, therapists and nutritionists are extremely knowledgeable and there’s always as line of communication and support available and you feel like part of a little community. “I firmly believe in Alevere and want others to see how it has worked for me. If I had one regret it would be that I did not start the programme sooner.” G&M Healthcare is a GP-led clinic in Broomhill, Sheffield. The experts at G&M Healthcare are dedicated to helping people look their best and, with a series of complementary cosmetic treatments on offer, alongside Alevere, clients are truly spoilt for choice. Spring on Sweet Pea Row RESIDENTS POSE FOR THE CAMERA IN THEIR SUNDAY BEST. ow that spring has finally sprung, we look back at the local area in the warmer months of yesteryear. In keeping with this seasonal theme, here we have a photo of Sweet Pea Row in Burncross in the late spring/early summer of 1900. The row of cottages on this once colourful corner of old Chapeltown still stands, although back then, the lane really did live by its name with gorgeous two-tone pink flowers climbing the walls outside every home. This particular photo was probably taken on a Sunday as the men are home and the children are appropriately dressed for chapel. As the women are wearing aprons, no doubt the scent of Yorkshire puddings cooking was wafting through the open doors. These cottages are typical of the period – stone-built, with a good-sized living room, one large and one small bedroom above and a small kitchen below. If you can identify anyone in this photo or have any stories relating to Sweet Pea Row, get in touch and let us know. See the contact details below.

LAST MONTH… In our February edition, David Juett and Ray Ashton got in touch with their photos of the hospital parades of Ecclesfield, which used to be invaluable to raise funds before the days of the NHS. David was delighted to discover that Ray could fill in some of the blanks in his own knowledge, whilst being able to help Ray with some of his. “The Ray Ashton photos are great because I can now put names to the faces,” said David. “The cannon float won second prize in 1914 and the photo was taken in the backyard of 144 to 160 The Common, Ecclesfield.”

IN BRIEF
Dance festival success for The Pickering Academy Local dance school, The Pickering Academy, which has been based at The Newton Hall in Chapeltown since 2001, is reaping the rewards of all their hard work. Back in September 2015, after a successful show at The Rotherham Civic Theatre, principal Melanie Pickering, realised that quite a few of her pupils had the ability and desire to pursue a career in dance. These children had all started dance classes with her from the age of three and were becoming teenagers. What had started as a pastime had become an important part of their lives. Some were attending classes in ballet, tap, jazz and pointe, three times a week. This inspired her to enter them into dance festivals to help give them more experience and confidence in the world of dance. Almost 18 months on, ‘Team P’ (20 children, aged five to 16) have From left: Beth Ray, Amelia South, participated in five festivals, the latest being The Millennium Festival in Hollie-Jo Ridge, Megan Blades-Cooke, Brontë Pendleton Doncaster where they had great success, winning 25 medals, several trophies and a bursary. Miss P, as she is known to parents and pupils alike, praised the dedication, hard work and support of all her pupils. “Every child is important at The Pickering Academy, and everyone is very supportive of one another. However, every girl on this picture is determined to have a future in dance, and that makes us all very proud,” she said. “The Newton Hall is a fantastic facility and I am pleased that it’s being used for the benefit of the local community, both now and for future generations.”

Happy Hare helps Sheffield Hospitals Charity As part of its first birthday celebrations, craft workshop Happy Hare in Chapeltown put on a Sew Saturday event to help Sheffield Hospitals Charity Around 20 guests turned out to create hats, quilts and bonding hearts for the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU), as well as some forget-me-nots for still born babies. Bonding hearts are pieces of cotton fabric which are given to both parents and babies receiving specialist care at the Jessop Wing as a way of building a mutual bond between a very poorly baby and its parents. Swapping the fabric regularly can help to get mums, dads and babies used to each other’s scent during the difficult days and weeks when they are unable to hold or cuddle each other. The idea can also help to produce the hormones needed to aid breastfeeding. The quilts will go to babies and children in hospital or hospice care. This is an ongoing project, so if you would like to help out, ask for the knitting patterns or donate your unwanted quilts (or even quilt tops which they can back and finish off). Anyone wanting to donate money towards materials, £1.50 buys enough fabric for nine patchwork squares (there are 12 in an incubator quilt, 36 in a lap quilt and 63 in a cot quilt). TRAVEL
FROM ANCIENT HISTORY TO SUN-SOAKED BEACHES, RACHEL MARTIN SAVOURS AN EYE-OPENING TASTE OF THE WONDERS ISRAEL HAS TO OFFER. The Old City of Jerusalem with the dome of the Holy Sepulchre Church
SIMPLY UNFORGETABLE
TRAVEL
he question I’ve been asked most often, both before I left and since I’ve returned from my trip to Israel, is: “is it safe?” The truth is, for anyone who regularly reads or watches the news, Israel appears to be an awfully dangerous place, and, if you’re planning on visiting right now, the question will quite probably pop up. Let me begin by saying no one can really tell you about safety. In Israel (or anywhere else, for that matter) the situation can change suddenly, and tourists must always keep up to date with the latest travel alerts. I can, however, quite clearly recall floating in the Dead Sea, walking the streets of Jerusalem and bar-hopping in Tel Aviv way past nightfall, not giving my safety a second thought. Israel is not on the average travellers’ radar, and that’s not surprising, as it is definitely not your average travel destination. It may be a small country, but from city to desert, religion to religion, intense culture to untouched nature, Israel is a complicated land. And its complexities aren’t just political, but geographic and cultural, too. Be prepared to cope with every one of those extremes – I learned this quickly during my recent trip, which was far too short to get a full understanding of what a traveller can experience, but one that offered an eyeopening glimpse nonetheless. It’s almost impossible to classify any travel experience as the most memorable – each journey has its own special story. I can say, however, that Jerusalem is one of the most fascinating places I have ever visited, and if it’s not already on your bucket list, it should be.
T
‘Machane Yehuda is the perfect spot to feel Jerusalem’s ambience. The people, the smells, a cornucopia of traditional Middle Eastern street food: shawarma, falafel, tahini, freshly squeezed pomegranate juice and much, much more…’
The Old City is divided into four quarters: Muslim, Jewish, Armenian and Christian, all with different cultures, varying beliefs and traditions and all surrounded by the same wall (aka the Wailing Wall and known in Hebrew as Kotel). “The best way to discover them all is to get lost,” said our tour guide Motti Saar – a man whose adoration for his country made me fall instantly in love with Israel’s past and present. “Literally get lost – on purpose – and let the beautiful cobbledstoned streets and Via Dolorosa (the 14 stations of the ‘Way of the Cross’) reveal Jerusalem while you walk.” The most panoramic view of the city is from the top of the Mount of Olives, especially at dawn and dusk, when you can see the Dome of the Rock as it glows golden in the sunlight. And just a few minutes’ walk away lies the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, where some believe Jesus was crucified and buried. One could easily spend a day touring the holy sites, but be sure to step outside of the Old City, where you’ll find the Machane Yehuda – this is your opportunity to try some local delicacies and traditional foods from the many nationalities that make Jerusalem their home. Often referred to as ‘The Shuk’, Machane Yehuda is the perfect spot to feel Jerusalem’s ambience. The people, the smells, a cornucopia of traditional Middle Eastern street food: shawarma, falafel, tahini, freshly squeezed pomegranate juice and much, much more. Of course, as incredible a destination as this city is, there’s more to Israel than Jerusalem. Tel Aviv, nicknamed the Big Orange for

Stunning: the view from the ancient fortress of Masada
its 24-hour lifestyle reminiscent of the Big Apple, is a sun-bronzed strip of coastline where coffee, diverse nightlife and culinary innovation are the local obsession. You can easily spend your days laid out on a blissfully balmy beach and your nights dining and drinking along tree-lined Rothschild Boulevard. Tel Aviv also sits just up the coast from Jaffa, an ancient Arab seaport - probably the most historically important city in the Levant region, apart from Jerusalem. “Tell an Israeli you're heading to Jaffa for the first time and he'll insist you dine at Dr. Shakshuka.” Motti said, as we tucked into our starters of Tripolitan specialty salads and hummus. I knew why - this courtyard restaurant does the best version of shakshuka, the signature dish of Israel. A spicy yet comforting tomato stew, served here in a battered frying pan and topped with fried eggs – once you’ve tried it, you’ll find that you crave it long after. After discovering just some of what the North has to offer, we drove south to the Negev Desert, stopping briefly to see ancient cities off in the distance, including Mamshit, the ruins of the ancient Nabatean city of Memphis. Geologically speaking, the defining feature of the Negev is its many volcanic craters, the most famous of which is the Makhtesh Ramon Crater, Israel’s version of the Grand Canyon, and, consequently, the nearby town of Mitspe Ramon. To make the visit even more memorable, when presented with an opportunity to sand40 Pulse | www.pulsemag.co.uk
board, we were all in. Dror Bamidbar offers to teach you to ‘surf ’ the sand – after a couple of falls and face plants, I figured out how to slide down without hurting myself (think snowboarding but without all the heavy equipment), wrapping up the session with fragrant desert tea served on mats. A welcome indulgence after exhausting yourself schlepping up the dunes. The following day, we made our way to Sfinat Hamidbar, a Bedouin settlement in the heart of the Negev, heading towards the start

point for our one-hour camel ride. Nicknamed the ‘ships of the desert’, camels are funny (and entertainingly grumpy) things indeed. As it rose from its knees, I held on white-knuckled unitl we were up and trekking along a path through the desert wilderness, stopping for a view of Golda Park. Next on the agenda: hiking among strange rock formations and exploring one of the world’s earliest copper mines, Timna Park, before packing up the car once again and taking off for two days in Eilat. The turquoise-tinted waters of the Red Sea offer diving and swimming opportunities galore, and there are plenty of other attractions on offer, including an aquarium, tax-free shopping and an array of outdoor activities showcasing the spectacular local desert scenery. It is here that we discovered Israel’s ultimate hippie experience – Dolphin Reef. Located on a private beach, various activities are offered, including scuba diving, snorkelling with dolphins (a childhood dream of mine come true), kayaking and boating. Walk past all these entertaining activities, however, and up a bamboo-framed path, and this will lead you to the Relaxation Pools spa. We entered the private area – three large pools full of fresh, ocean and Dead Sea water next to each other – where a
TRAVEL masseuse met us with a friendly smile before floating us on our backs for a 30- minute therapy session, lowering our heads under water until our ears were submerged and treating us to soothing underwater music. After the therapy is complete, you can remain in the water, roam around the bar, or simply take a nap while overlooking the bordering Jordanian mountains – I opted for the latter. Our mission the next day was to venture east to the Dead Sea and Masada. Masada – ‘fortress’ in Hebrew – is an ancient fortification King Herod built for himself on top of an isolated plateau on the eastern edge of the Judean Desert. Since we only had a set amount of time, we decided to take the cable car instead of climbing the infamous Snake Path. While going up, all you see is desert for miles and miles around, and, once at the top, an incredible view greeted us. But the awesome landscape is not the only reason this place is so revered by Jews worldwide. Masada was, in fact, the last stand against the Roman Empire. When the Romans decided to attack Masada in the first century CE, the inhabitants decided they would not surrender, and rather than be enslaved, opted for mass suicide. After stopping to see the rooms that have been preserved there – you can actually see some of the original wall paintings, as the frescoes were created by applying the pigment to wet plaster so that it would soak into the wall – we headed to the lowest place on earth. As we drove towards the Dead Sea, I was astonished to see so many trees, since the water in the area is so salty. “This is due to Israeli agricultural developments around desalination of water, which allows us the ability to create oases in the desert wherever we want.” Motti explained. A trip to Israel is not complete without a float in the Dead Sea, particularly because many environmentalists believe its days are numbered due to global warming. And, while not classified as one of the Seven Wonders of the World, it is definitely a place for the record books. The Dead Sea definitely lives up to its name: there is no sign of life anywhere – no plants, no seaweed and no fish. I got to about waist-high and, as I slowly laid back, my legs bounced to the surface. I was floating – I know that’s what is supposed to happen, but what a surreal feeling to experience this in reality. Then there’s the surrounding Judean Desert itself. Probably one of the most majestic areas on this planet – and despite its proximity to the city of Jerusalem, it looks and feels like another world. My advice: take a jeep tour around the foot of Mount Sodom, which is one of the more exhilarating experiences. After an incredible six days, I returned home with my heart and belly full, anxiously awaiting the day I would once again lift a glass to life - “L’chaim”.

MOTORING
Sting in the tail Welcome everyone to the most powerful Kia ever made. Called the Kia Stinger, and developed at the Nürburgring Nordschleife, it’s a fastback four-door saloon meaning there’s the added practicality of numerous doors yet still attains the sporty profile of a coupe. Very much inspired from the Kia GT concept for shown in 2011, the Stinger will certainly be one of the most eye-catching cars on the road.
There will be three engines available when the car goes on sale later in the year: a 252hp 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo petrol engine, a 265hp 3.3-litre turbo petrol unit and a 2.2-litre four-pot diesel producing 197hp. All Stingers will come with an in-house eight-speed automatic transmission and they’ll be available in either rear-drive or all-wheel drive formats.

With the seats in place the Crossland X has 410-litre boot space and this can be adjusted up to 520-litres thanks to the rear seats being able to move forwards or backwards. The Crossland X comes with a whole host of advanced technologies including a 180-degree panoramic rear-view camera, advanced park assist, forward collision alert with pedestrian detection, autonomous emergency braking, lane departure warning and speed sign recognition.
