HOUSE AND HOME

HOME HELP FROM HOUSE SALES TO PROPERTY MAINTENANCE, THESE LOCAL FIRMS ARE READY TO ASSIST.

Hunters At Hunters, a family run business, they feel they add a bit more of a personal touch to selling your home. They have enjoyed a 100 per cent customer satisfaction rating since the day they opened their doors in 2012, which is much to do with their high levels of communication throughout the selling process, something many high street agents lack. They pride themselves on their high levels of service, from presenting your property beautifully, to helping you right through to completion day. Last year, they achieved 99 per cent of their original selling prices, held the highest click through rates on the main property websites for offices in their area and also named the fastest selling branch according to Rightmove. So if you are thinking of selling or renting this spring, pop into your local branch in Chapeltown to see what their highly-trained and friendly team can do for you. 1 Station Road, Chapeltown S35 2XE // Tel: 0114 257 8999 Email: Chapeltown@huntersnet.co.uk // www.huntersnet.co.uk

Green Thumb The first dry and sunny day in March is the ideal time to give your lawn its first cut of the year. Cutting the grass too short, too soon, can attract unwanted weeds and moss, so to avoid that happening, make sure you use the highest blade setting on your lawnmower. Once you've carried out basic maintenance on your lawn, plan ahead to prevent all your hard work in the spring going to waste, and to guarantee a beautiful lawn you can enjoy all summer long. Hotter weather and dry spells over the summer can lead to your lawn turning yellow and drying up, but there are some really effective treatments out there that can help keep grass greener for longer, such as the Oasis treatment from local lawn core specialist Green Thumb. Call Green Thumb Sheffield on 0114 276 0101 for a free lawn analysis or email: sheffield@greenthumb.co.uk Tel: 0114 276 0101 Email: sheffield@greenthumb.co.uk www.greenthumb.co.uk

PlumbRite Due to the hands-on nature of the job, combined with the call centres associated with bigger companies, many plumbers are difficult to contact, leaving customers waiting around while the problem worsens. PlumbRite doesn’t have this problem, as every call is answered directly by plumbing engineer Dean Ellis. Previously a franchise, it is now an independent local business, solely run by owner Dean. This means you will benefit from a personal service with the same plumber helping you every step of the way, from your first enquiry through to completion. Based in Ecclesfield, Dean covers the whole S6 and S35 area, as well as Stocksbridge and Penistone. Dean is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week for emergency plumbing. He also tackles general plumbing issues, from a leaking tap to a whole drainage system. He can also design, supply and fit complete bathrooms, including the tiling. 3. Take a walk in Chapeltown Park Chapeltown Park has always been a great place to go, whether you’re wanting a brisk walk with scenic views or take part in one of the outdoor activities on offer. In 2003, The Friends of Chapeltown Park were formed to work with the local authority to try to improve facilities in the park and to have monthly events to encourage even more people to visit the park. Thanks to the fundraising of The Friends of Chapeltown Park and the council, a natural playground for young children opened in July 2011, which is now firmly established as a meeting place for families and loved by children. The next egg-citing event at Chapeltown Park will be the Easter Egg Trail on Saturday 24 March from 10.30am to 12.30pm. Follow the trail to find tokens to exchange for free Easter eggs or treats. Not only is it a great place to borrow a range of books for all ages, it is also home to bookable computers, social groups and events. It is a community meeting space with groups including a local historical archive group, the Knit and Natter group and Imagination gaming sessions. The venue has also held events for Sheffield literary festival, Off The Shelf and holds regular surgeries for City Councillors for East Ecclesfield. What’s more, there is a fun and colourful children’s area, free and fast WiFi, black and white or colour photocopying services, an easy access ramp for those with mobility issues and a friendly and helpful team. The BA (Hons) Top-up Acting for Touring Theatre programme, a one year full-time course, is designed to prepare actors and creative artists for the launch of their career. Essentially working within a theatre company, the course allows students to build traditional skills that agents or casting directors are looking for. Students will also work with other professional theatre companies and have the opportunity to take their work on tour, providing them with first-hand work experience to prepare them for the world of work after completing their course. Peter Lawton, HE Pathway Leader for Performing Arts at UCB, said: “We University Campus Barnsley BA (Hons) Acting for Touring Theatre are proud to present students performing William Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night this one year top-up degree acting course, designed to give students the opportunity of becoming fully-fledged actors and creative artists.” Dr Henry Bell, Performance Studies Lecturer at SHU, added: “We're delighted to be working with UCB on this innovative course. We want to promote performing arts education across the region and this degree allows young people who want to perform and are interested in touring theatre the opportunity to do so." Places are available on the BA (Hons) Top-up Acting for Touring Theatre course at UCB starting in September 2018.

Each month, Neil Bumford MD of Bumford Heating, tells us one of his top tips to keep our homes warm and energy efficient throughout the colder months. Check your radiators - Make sure that areas around your radiators are always clear. Putting furniture in front or covering radiators with long curtains will block the heat. If your radiators are getting excessively hot and the boiler is rapidly turning on and off, the temperature of the water going to your radiators may be too high. This wastes energy and reduces the boiler’s efficiency. You can usually adjust the temperature using the central heating control dial or adjustment switches on your boiler.

EASTER EGGS

OUR WINNER Tesco Finest Salted Caramel Egg 310g, £9 A smooth Belgian milk chocolate base with creamy milk and white chocolate. Both are sweetened with crunchy caramel pieces and enhanced by a hint of sea salt... With a description like that, we were salivating before we’d even opened the box. The egg is split into two halves, so you can enjoy the best of both. As we split this thick and decadent egg in half, a few members of the panel even let out some “oohs” and “aahs”. The salt beautifully balances out the sweet caramel and chocolate, it’s an impressive size, well-presented and is egg-cellent value for money. The fact that we couldn’t help going back for seconds, was also a strong indicator that this was the best of the bunch.

own tasting panel were on hand to put some of the most delicious Easter products from some of the best chocolatiers around to the test. Read on to find out which we deemed the most egg-cellent and which one we crowned the top of the chocs.

BEST ALL-ROUNDER Betty’s Trio of Spring Flower Eggs 250g, £27.50 Not sure whether your loved-one likes milk, dark or white chocolate? This trio ticks all the boxes. The dark chocolate egg is rich with delicious depth of flavour, the white (or should we say silver?) chocolate was creamy and obviously of a high quality, while the milk chocolate was a good balance of the two. Like most products in Betty’s Easter range, they were beautifully hand-crafted and decorated with flower frosting. 20 Pulse | www.pulsemag.co.uk

EASTER EGGS

BEST BOOZY CHOCOLATE Prestat Pink Popping Prosecco Easter Egg 170g, £17.50 Confectionary with a kick. Enveloped within this prosecco-flavoured chocolate egg are fizzing popping candy and strong prosecco-filled truffles. What’s more, it has the “By appointment to Her Majesty the Queen” seal of approval. And if it’s good enough for Liz, it’s good enough for us.

BEST FOR ALLERGIES Booja-Booja Around Midnight Espresso Easter Egg 35g, £9.99 Not only were we impressed by the gorgeously painted, egg-shaped wooden box this was presented in, we also couldn’t believe how deliciously silky these truffles were – especially considering they are organic and dairy, gluten and soya free. Coffee lovers will also enjoy the authentic flavour.

BEST FOR KIDS Thorntons White Chocolate Bunny 200g, £6 Thorntons is a must if you’ve got kids to buy for this Easter and this white chocolate bunny is a great choice. As well as being a decent size with a detailed kid-friendly design, you’re sure to get good quality chocolate from a high street favourite.

BEST FOR DARK CHOCOLATE LOVERS Chococo Luxury Madagascar MegaDark Egg 175g, £18 This one was certainly the coolest-looking of the bunch, with its geometric pattern and three layers of dark chocolate. If you know a true dark chocolate connoisseur, this bitter 85 per cent MegaDark egg is just the thing. Vegans and the ethically-minded can also rejoice, as the company strive to carefully source all their ingredients.

BEST FOR GROWN-UP KIDS Sainsbury’s Taste the Difference Swiss Chocolate Bunny 440g, £6 A grown-up take on a classic kid’s choice, this Easter treat from Sainsbury’s Taste The Difference range is a realistic twist on the usual cartoon-esque hollow bunny. This was such a work of art, it was a shame to behead it. But we were soon rewarded with smooth Swiss milk chocolate, which was easy to break up as it bent rather than snapped, therefore avoiding pesky crumbs – well, it would be a shame to waste any. @PulseRMC

ANNIVERSARY

Pulse stories

AS PULSE CELEBRATES ITS FIFTH ANNIVERSARY, WE HAVE BEEN LOOKING BACK THROUGH THE ARCHIVES AT SOME OF THE STORIES AND PEOPLE WE HAVE WRITTEN ABOUT OVER THE YEARS. FROM FUN, LOCAL FEATURES SUCH AS BURNCROSS WINNING THEIR YORKSHIRE IN BLOOM TITLE IN 2014, TO INTERVIEWS WITH HUGE, HOUSEHOLD NAMES SUCH AS WILL YOUNG IN 2016, WE HAVE COVERED IT ALL. READ ON FOR THE HIGHLIGHTS IN PULSE’S HISTORY.

March 2013 Community spirit This feature about how Chapeltown Forum was bringing the community together was the perfect way to set the tone for our first issue ever. After the amazing turn out for the Olympic torch passing through Chapeltown in June 2012, locals John Housley and Darren Ward were inspired to start up the group, which now hosts a range of events in the area.

July 2014 Burncross in Bloom The Burncross Action Team’s hard work paid off when they won the Yorkshire in Bloom Gold Rose award in the large village category. We had a chat with the close-knit group about how the area was blooming in more ways than one.

March 2015 Interview with Amy Garcia

December 2015 Dame for a laugh

Pulse spoke to Look North’s Amy Garcia about how she balanced a demanding television career with her family life. Watched by 2.5 million people each week, BBC Look North continues to be held highly in the hearts of Yorkshire folk.

Celebrating the Christmas panto season, we interviewed Damian Williams about his role as the dame in the Lyceum’s production of Aladdin. At that time, the butch, bold and boisterous local panto legend had been causing slapstick chaos as the Lyceum’s dame for the past seven years.

May 2016 Interview with Will Young Ahead of his performance at Doncaster Racecourse, we caught up with Pop Idol, Will Young. From his ‘cheesy’ rendition (Dr Fox’s words not his) of Blame It On The Boogie for his first televised audition, to six critically-acclaimed albums, a budding acting career and becoming an outspoken LGBT activist and WWF supporter, it was great to see how far the star had come.

ANNIVERSARY

June 2016 Lean in 15 Body Coach and internet sensation, Joe Wicks took some time out of his busy schedule to tell Pulse readers how they could become Lean in 15. Millions of followers have benefitted from Joe’s fitness and nutrition plan. As suggested by the name of the diet, his healthy dishes can all be made up in 15 minutes and are accompanied by a 90-day guided exercise plan.

August 2016 Charity starts at work After Pulse’s parent company, RMC Media celebrated its 30th anniversary, the magazine had a makeover and launched its new sleek look for the August 2016 issue. It featured a story about how local heating and plumbing company, Bumfords were preparing to take on the The Yorkshire Three Peaks Challenge for The Children’s Hospital – an arduous 12-hour hike for a very worthy local charity.

April 2017 The race is on We were so excited about the Tour de Yorkshire coming to town that we published our very own guide to the event. Published inside Pulse and as a separate magazine, it contained a beginner’s guide, interviews with top cyclists Tony Gibb and Adam Blythe, and information about all three stages – including the all-important Stage 3, which finished with a huge party at Stocksbridge retail centre, Fox Valley.

December 2017 Interview with Catherine Bailey Surrounded by the splendour of stately home Wentworth Woodhouse, we talked to bestselling author Catherine Bailey about her book Black Diamonds and how the house still enchants her so many years on. We also found out about the whole host of exciting events and the bright future planned to keep Wentworth Woodhouse a major part of the community.

February 2018 Looking for love Finding the right partner isn’t always an easy task, so for this year’s Valentine’s issue, we spoke to local dating agency owners Liz Harwood and Sue Walters about what makes for a good relationship, their dating dos and don’ts and how Two For Joy Introductions can point you in the right direction.

HOMES

Tidy up the exterior

Windows

Create a fantastic first impression for the impending parties by sprucing up the outside of your house. Give your doors a clean and a lick of paint, change outdoor lights, re-paint wooden fences and add some new plant pots, hanging baskets or a welcome mat to the entrance of your home. Don’t forget to clean your gutters, as rain and wind will have washed fallen leaves into them. If clogged drainpipes and gutters are neglected, it can lead to flooding so make sure to give them a thorough clear-out when the dryer weather arrives.

Instead of just wiping down the inside of your windows, make sure you take to the outdoors during the spring cleaning season to remove spots and smudges you don't usually have the time to tackle. If you can, wash them on a cloudy day to ensure the sun doesn’t dry the cleaner before you’re done wiping meaning you won’t be left with streaks.

Deep clean appliances Your oven and microwave have probably seen a lot of use especially over the festive period - so now is a good time to give both a scrub. It’s also important to give your fridge a deep clean, so it’s ready for all the fresh spring vegetables that will be filling it up. Don’t forget to clean the inside and out - take out all the interior and wash it with warm soapy water, and if possible pull the fridge out so you can sweep behind it.

Spruce up for spring THE WEATHER IS LOOKING UP AND IT’S TIME TO GET YOUR HOUSE BACK IN SHAPE, WRITES HANNAH SANDERS. fter a long, chilly winter, it’s hard to believe that spring is just around the corner. The mornings are brighter and we’re starting to think about taking off our warm layers. But, with warmer weather on the horizon comes the realisation that we may have neglected our homes during the colder months, so the time has come to spring into

A

action. Although no-one looks forward to the deep-clean, when you see the accumulation of dust in forgotten places you know it’s time to drag your house out of the winter blues. With a little elbow grease and a lot of love, your house can have that fresh spring look again, simply follow these simple steps for a happy, brighter home.

De-clutter

Garden Spring is all about adding a splash of colour back into our lives, and what better way to do this than by brightening up the garden with an array of flowers. Now is the time to start planting so that your garden will be bursting with colour come springtime. If you really want to re-invent your garden, add some new furniture along with lights and accessories, and don't forget to pressure wash your decking or patio. Treat yourself to a fire-pit or barbeque to prepare for the summer party season.

32 Pulse | www.pulsemag.co.uk

After months of hiding yourselves indoors, your house is probably in need of a serious clear out. It’s time to be brutal with your belongings - find a place for it or throw it away. Take the time to have a clean of all your drawers and pack away your winter clothes for another year to give you some more wardrobe space. You could even make some extra money by selling unwanted items online, host a car boot sale or donate to your local charity shop.

Check the roof With the heavy rain, winds and snow storms up and down the country, your roof will have suffered a beating this winter, so it’s essential to check no damage has been done. This can be done yourself, or if the thought of climbing on the roof leaves you feeling queasy, you can hire a professional roofer.

Update furnishings If you don’t fancy painting your home, then give it a seasonal makeover by replacing throws and thick curtains with light furnishings, cushions and colourful accessories. Bring in pastels, vibrant colours or some rose gold with the help of picture frames, plant pots, candles and rugs to give your home that spring feel. As well, it’s important to wash your pillows, duvets and curtains and get someone to help flip your mattress.

Clean carpets Fabrics that have absorbed a winter’s worth of dirt will need deep cleaning to get them ready for another busy year of guests. Shampoo them or hire a carpet cleaner to get them in tip top shape. And don't forget to move your furniture while it is drying, which can take about a day but you can open the windows to help speed up the process. If you aren’t up to doing it yourself, simple hire a professional carpet cleaner to get the job done.

DUST THE FORGOTTEN PLACES Give your house some well-needed TLC by firing up the vacuum and getting rid of the dust. Take the time to take light fittings down, clear off the bookshelf, DVD cabinet, clear under the bed and sweep away all the hidden cobwebs. Dust and polish the smaller things including picture frames and desk trinkets to give them a new lease of life. Don’t forget to tackle the bathroom, by getting rid of any limescale that has built up. White vinegar can help do this, along with removing stains from the toilet, sink and shower - simply spray it on and let it get to work.

LOOKING BACK

Exciting times 20TH CENTURY TRANSPORT TAKES CENTRE STAGE IN OUR RETROSPECTIVE THIS MONTH, WRITES PHOEBE SEYMOUR. his month we’re looking back at the technological beginnings of our local transport system. Connecting the residents of Chapeltown to areas in and outside of Sheffield, it was an exciting time in the industrial revolution, as journeys which once took a good few hours, suddenly became much quicker and easier than ever before. We start with this photo of an early version of a public motor bus, taken from the book, Ecclesfield Chapeltown & High Green From Old Photographs by local historians Joan and Mel Jones.

T

The accompanying text reads: “Chapeltown to Firth Park motor bus. This early motorbus, belonging to the Ecclesfield District Motor Bus Company, was a vital cog in the early motorised public transport service. As the board on the window points out, the route followed by the bus linked Chapeltown and Ecclesfield with the electric tram terminus at Firth Park. This terminus was opened at the bottom of Bellhouse Road in 1909, and gave direct access to the centre of Sheffield via Fir Vale.” Taken from the same publication, we also see a photo of Chapeltown Midland Railway

station. Many people may not be aware that Chapeltown was once home to two railway stations – the one depicted here and The Great Central Railway’s Station located up White Lane, which opened in 1855 and closed in 1953. The accompanying text for this photo reads: “The Midland Railway’s station opened in 1897 at the junction of Sussex Road and Arundel Road. This is the line that survives to this day. In the background is the bridge carrying Arundel Road.” Finally, we have a photo kindly sent to us by a mystery Pulse reader, who has not enclosed their name. The note with this photo says: “First bus on solid tyres to go from Malin Bridge. My dad’s family grew up on Holme Lane. This photograph came from their home. No idea of the date, so don’t know if any of them are on it.” If you are the person who sent in this photograph or are someone who may be able to shed more light on the people in the photo, when it was taken or any other interesting information about the transport systems of the time, contact Pulse on the contact details below.

Caring approach NEW FAMILY BUSINESS PETER HAIGH & SONS HAVE A WEALTH OF EXPERIENCE IN DEALING WITH THE MOST DIFFICULT OF TIMES. eter Haigh & Sons Funeral Directors may be a new business, but funeral directing is an industry that is firmly in the family. The family business opened in June 2017, born from a desire to provide a caring and supportive atmosphere for families at their welcoming office or coming to your home. They are always striving to be as transparent as possible about their prices, as well as providing honest advice about what they can offer. Peter holds a diploma in funeral directing, is a qualified NAFD Vocational Qualification Assessor, and previously worked as manager at Eric Eyre Funeral Services for over 13 years. Prior to that he worked at G & M Lunt funeral directors and John Heath & Sons. His wife, Julie, also has a strong background in the industry, having met Peter whilst working at John Heath and Sons. Julie also has over 12 years’ experience working in the benefit service for Sheffield City Council and as well as offering support when

planning a funeral, she has a wealth of knowledge about benefits and charities, which may help if you are on a low income. If you have difficulty paying for a funeral, let the team know and they will be happy to help. Julie and the team can discuss with you how to keep costs to a minimum, whilst providing a dignified and respectful funeral for your loved one. Joined by their sons, Matthew and Oliver, they believe in giving families a bespoke and meticulous service. “We believe everyone should have a respectful and dignified send-off whatever their ethnicity, religion or budget,” says Julie. “We do bespoke funerals with everything from traditional services, to woodland funerals. We offer the same great service as other big Sheffield companies, but at a fairer price.” Julie is also about to complete a Foundation for Infant Loss Training course, so that she can provide plenty of support and advice to those arranging funerals and services for babies and infants.

Peter Haigh

What’s more, Peter Haigh and Sons are proud to announce that they have signed the Fair Funerals Pledge and subscribe to the National Federation of Funeral Directors Fair Price Charter. The pledge is part of the Fair Funerals campaign, which works with the public, the funeral profession and the government to tackle funeral poverty. “We understand that arranging a funeral is a daunting and sometimes traumatic event, we ourselves have been there, but we will be here for you every step of the way,” adds Julie. “Free advice is just a phone call away.” Peter and Julie are here 24 hours a day, seven days a week, so contact Peter Haigh and Sons or visit their website for a full list of services today. Testimonials “I cannot recommend Peter Haigh and Sons enough. Himself and Julie have been brilliant throughout. Always understanding and caring. Thank you so much for everything you have done and all the best for the future.” – Nat Turner “Peter Haigh & Sons Funeral Directors are excellent. In fact, I cannot recommend them more highly, not only for the efficient and effective manner in which they handled the funeral process, but also the understanding and empathy that they showed to me and my family at a time of immense grief. Thank you again.” – Martyn Westerman

MOTORING

ACQUIRED TASTE The Bentley Bentayga needs no introduction – it’s the company’s first ever SUV and it’s as luxurious and pompous as any Middle-Eastern oil billionaire could ever hope for. Along with the 6.0-litre W12 petrol unit, the Bentayga is now available to order with a 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged V8 petrol engine developing 542 bhp and 568 lb ft (770 Nm) of torque. Fuel economy has been stated at 24.8mpg on the combined cycle with CO2 emissions of 260g/km. Fuel range is predicted at 464 miles on one tank of fuel. In order to achieve these results the engine will deactivate half of its cylinders in order to save fuel whilst on a cruise. Price and release date yet to be announced. Expect this to be the most popular variant.

SPECIAL EDITIONS AND LUXURY SUVs ARE THE ORDER OF THE DAY FOR JORDAN CUTFORTH.

Stand out from the crowd Honda has announced its pricing for the anticipated new diesel Civic manual hatchback. Available now, with the automatic landing in early summer, the entry-level S model with manual transmission will start from £20,120 OTR rising to £24,925 for an EX trim car with the six-speed manual gearbox. Trim levels will mirror those of the existing 1.0 VTEC Turbo petrol model with S, SE, SR and EX trims available. The EX trim is also available with an optional Tech Pack for £600 which adds LED headlights with washers, LED fog lights, wireless phone charging and heated rear seats. The Honda Civic is a great alternative to the usual crop of German hatchbacks, and this Civic stands out even more than before.

Stuck in the middle Find that there’s not enough product range in the Mercedes AMG powerhouse division to choose from? Well Mercedes should now have you covered with this, the new 53-series model range. Available only on the CLS, E-Class Coupé and the E-Class Cabriolet, the 53-series range perfects fits the bill between the rampant 63-model range and the more tame 43 models. Every 53 model range comes with a 3.0-litre six-cylinder in-line engine, but this engine is different because it will be a hybridised. The engine itself will produce 435 hp and delivers 520Nm of torque, with the electrical side of things providing an additional 16 kW of output plus 250 Nm of torque momentarily. It comes with a nine-speed auto gearbox and all-wheel drive (4MATIC).

Appeal to your dark side

door handles and a black rear bumper. Standard paint is exclusive Carbon Steel grey metallic, along with side bars and a rear styling bar finished in matt black. Underbody styling and unique Dark Label decals complete the exterior design. On the inside, there are seat trim covers finished in Alcantara, black headlining and vent bezels trimmed in chrome silk gloss. Available with a 202hp 3.0-litre V6 unit mated to an eight-speed auto gearbox.

Like your Amaroks? Want them to be more stylish and luxurious? Then look no further as we have this – the Amarok Dark Label. Priced from £33,650, the Amarok Dark Label is based on the range-topping Amarok Highline. It comes with premium features as standard, which include 18-inch Rawson alloy wheels, matt black mirror housings, black 50 Pulse | www.pulsemag.co.uk
