LOOKING BACK
not out... CHRIS WILSON TAKES A NOSTALGIC LOOK BACK AT 25 YEARS OF YOUR FAVOURITE LOCAL MAGAZINE, ALONG WITH THE STORIES MAKING THE HEADLINES IN 1994. It was back in 1994 that the first issue of Sixer hit the streets. So, we are celebrating our 25th anniversary this year. We’ve produced hundreds of issues since then and as the magazine has grown in size we’ve kept to the same core principles: keep it regional, relevant and entertaining. There are lots of great features and interviews planned to celebrate our quarter century, and over the coming months we’ll carry on doing what we’ve always done, interviewing individuals at the heart of the Sixer community and shining a spotlight on the people, places, sports clubs and societies from across North Sheffield. But this month we thought it would be interesting to take a look back and see what was happening in the year that Sixer was first published... and there’s no doubting what was the big news story not just in and around the S6 postcode but all over Sheffield. It was 25 years ago that the first Supertram journey from Sheffield city centre to Meadowhall was completed. The idea was for a modern, state-of-the-art light
I
16 www.rmcmedia.co.uk
tram system. It was first mooted in the 1980s with the aim of it being up and running in time for the 1991 World Student Games. But even from the beginning there were doubters who feared the disruption would outweigh the benefits, and were also worried that the proposed £60million price tag would be a burden for the city. So when that first tram hit the rails, three years late and at £240million – more than four times the
LOOKING BACK
original price tag – it is understandable that any delight that the first stage of the system was up and running was tempered with a degree of caution. Nevertheless there was a mood of celebration as Supertram began running in 1994. Over the previous four years Sheffield residents and business owners had had their lives and livelihoods disrupted as roads were dug up, temporary traffic lights were installed, dust and rubble were everywhere and, unless they had absolutely no option, people found alternative routes for their journeys to and from work, and different places to shop, eat and drink. North Sheffield was hit more than most by the disruption as Hillsborough corner, Malin Bridge and Middlewood became building sites. So the end of that disruption and the unveiling of Sheffield’s new tram system was undoubtedly good news. And while Supertram was dominating the front pages of the newspapers, Sheffield Wednesday were all over the back. The Owls team of 1994 was one of the best in the country, packed with star names and current internationals and competing for the biggest prizes in football. Match days at Hillsborough were crackling with excitement and the fact that a final placing of seventh in the Premier League and a run to the semi-finals of the League Cup was regarded by many fans as underachieving just shows how the fortunes of the club have fallen in the subsequent quarter century. What would Owls fans give for that sort of ‘disappointment’ now? Wednesday were managed by Trevor Francis, who had steered the club to third in the league and two Wembley cup finals in previous seasons. With
internationals like Chris Waddle, Carlton Palmer, Chris Woods and John Sheridan in the team they were expected to succeed. But there was disappointment in the League Cup semi-final against Manchester United where a crushing 4-1 second leg home defeat meant the Owls lost 5-1 on aggregate. Perhaps if key striker David Hirst had not missed much of the season through injury the dream of bringing some silverware back to Hillsborough would have been realised. In the world of music Crookes-born soul shouter Joe Cocker, the former gas fitter’s apprentice whose impassioned live performances were captured for a worldwide audience in the film of the 1969 Woodstock music festival, was enjoying a career renaissance in 1994. Having been nominated for a Brit Award the previous year, he performed the opening set at Woodstock ’94 as one of the few originals who played the original festival 25 years earlier to have lasted the course. 1994 was also a big year for another Crookes musician, Paul Carrack, as he left the band Squeeze for the second time and embarked on a recording project with two members of the Eagles which resulted in one of Carrack’s co-written songs, Love Will Keep Us Alive, being recorded by the American country-rock legends. The following year he won an award for it being the most-played song on US radio.
So what else was happening in 1994? Here’s a snapshot of the times... Counting the cost Prices in North Sheffield in 1994 were as follows: The average house: £50,316 The average salary: £12,900 The average car: £10,600 A litre of fuel: £0.57 A loaf of bread: £0.74 A pint of milk £1.44

DEAR PARISHIONERS Over the past months it has been a real joy to write these articles about our parish. It has been particularly rewarding to have included contributions from the Council’s partners whose organisations are at the heart of our communities. Alongside the work they do to enhance our village life are a small team of Council staff who ensure our parks and open spaces, are maintained at a very high standard.
Friends and colleagues gathered to wish David well.
It was with some sadness but with good wishes for his future that we bid goodbye to David Palmer our Groundsman who retired at the end of January after 47 years of service to the Council. He started at BPC in 1971 as a Trainee Gardener. He progressed to Groundsman in 1973. He remembers there being a greenhouse in Coronation Park when the Groundsmen grew the plants for use around the Parish. David is a keen photographer whose images of the Parish enhance the Council’s website. I was pleased to present him with a book on Digital Photography. David graciously gave us one of his pictures of The Church of St Nicholas, High BradďŹ eld which we have framed and now hangs in the Council chamber. Picture hanging by Parish Clerk, Mrs Teresa Bissatt
In January councillors were sorry to receive the resignation for personal reasons of our colleague Cllr Katie Condliffe. Katie was elected in 2008 to the Parish Council and has served over 10 years as a Parish Councillor for Stannington Ward. She was Planning Chair for 3 consecutive years from 2009 to 2011 and then Vice Chair of our Land & Premises Committee in 2012 becoming its Chair in 2013. In May 2015 she was Vice Chair of the Council. All of the councillors wish her well and thank her for her service to the Parish. Councillor Trevor Bagshaw Chairman
and her assistant Mrs Pam Burgoyne.

This year we seem to have certainly been touched by Winter but with hints of Spring. Whatever the weather the Parish put on an attractive face as I hope these pictures show.
OUT STANNINGTON PROJECT IS FIRST OFF Jacquie Budd of the Steel Valley Project reports on the ďŹ rst Heritage Lottery funded Sheffield Lakeland Landscape Partnership project. “Work started in December on the restoration of Bowcroft Cemetery, an ancient Quaker burial ground high above Stannington. The cemetery, owned by BradďŹ eld Parish Council, dates back to the 1700s and commands panoramic views across Sheffield and the Peak District. Steel Valley Project volunteers have been repairing the dry stone wall which borders the cemetery and clearing overgrown vegetation to help improve access, whilst still retaining a thriving habitat for wildlife in the area. The work also includes the installation of a small section of surfaced path GSPN UIF MBZ CZ UP UIF DFNFUFSZ entrance, helping to make the site more accessible for visitors. When completed, visitors will also be able to learn about the history of the cemetery via an interpretation panel which the charity will design and install.â€?
Steel Valley Project volunteers at work
I am really pleased that the Parish Council has been able to contribute to a project that will improve access to an important part of our footpath network in the Parish. The project is called:
BRADFIELD ANCIENT WAYS IMPROVEMENTS It is led by Sheffield Ramblers and Sheffield City Council and will improve six popular ancient paths in the Parish to be easily accessible to the general public. Unfortunately over time the many stiles have fallen into disrepair, steps have become worn, and the paths have become more like obstacle courses than public footpaths. With funding and help from Sheffield City Council Public Rights of Way, the Ramblers, the Sheffield Lakeland Landscape Partnership, the Heritage Lottery Fund, BradďŹ eld Parish Council, BradďŹ eld Walkers are Welcome, Ramblers Holidays Charitable Trust and the Peak District National Park, the project will repair and replace about 30 stiles, gates and sets of steps, to ensure these ancient routes can once again be easily enjoyed by the general public. On a wet morning in January I went with Terry Howard, as the picture shows, to look at some of the stiles that the project will tackle. Terry comments that the paths run between High BradďŹ eld, Low BradďŹ eld and Worrall. With splendid views over Damask Reservoir these Terry Howard Vice Chairman of S. Yorks. & NE. Derbys. RA. Inspect access problem on path 167 ancient ways are ideally placed for all to enjoy. The paths include what was a buried section of a traditional stone walkway that is believed to be a paved “Church wayâ€?, historically used by parishioners to bring bodies from many miles away, to be buried at the Grade One listed Church of St. Nicholas, High BradďŹ eld. Sections of the walkway have now been uncovered and it is fascinating to consider that burial parties from hundreds of years ago would have made their way to the church along this walkway. The partners in the project also thank Peak Park Rangers, Sheffield Council Rangers, and Ramblers Volunteers, who will be doing much of the practical work, as well as the many farmers and landowners whose land the paths cross, for their help and cooperation.

& ABOUT OUR PARTENERS Continuing my partnership theme from my last article Tim O’ Connell, Chairman of the Oughtibridge Gala Events & Donations Charity asks. “Where are you likely to ďŹ nd a parade, royalty, competitions, games and activities, homemade crafts, racing ferrets, wheelbarrow aerobatics, a skiffle group, dancing, singing, a brass band, dog show and a chainsaw artist all in one place?â€? The answer; Coronation
Park, Oughtibridge on Gala Day, Saturday 29 June 2019! For over 50 years local volunteers, XJUI UIF DP PQFSBUJPO BOE TVQQPSU of BradďŹ eld Parish Council, have been providing an eclectic mix of family friendly, fun entertainment and a great day out for local people. The Gala and Sports Night, which takes place 10 days before gala day, raise thousands of pounds for charities, community groups and projects in the local area, and make sure other events are supported throughout BradďŹ eld Parish with the loan of equipment. Planning is well underway for this year’s Gala and Sports Night. If you can give a small amount of your time or feel you could contribute in any way to keep these much loved community events going for local people to enjoy, please get in touch. More details can be found on our website. www.oughtibridgegala.co.uk/
Meanwhile from Stannington, Danny Piermattei, Chairman of Action for Stannington writes, â€?the working partnership with BradďŹ eld Parish Council was formed for the purpose of ensuring that the wider Parish area remains a clean, green and safe place for residents and visitors alike. Our volunteers organise weekly foot patrols along miles of footpaths and country lanes to remove any sign of litter and degradation.
Instances of y tipping are reported and, by working closely with enforcement officers at Environmental Services, a number of offenders have been identiďŹ ed and brought to book. Thanks to the vigilance of local SFTJEFOUT B OVNCFS PG PĹŠ SPBE CJLFST IBWF CFFO SFQPSUFE UP UIF QPMJDF On the Action for Stannington website www.actionforstannington.org.uk you will ďŹ nd useful links to allow you to easily communicate with the local authority and the 101 service. Successful in establishing the popular recycling points in Low BradďŹ eld and Stannington Park, our volunteers provide advice on how to recycle most household material, through our website and Facebook page. In Stannington village, our volunteers work alongside Parks & Countryside staff in the upkeep of green spaces and public amenities. Trees are planted, rose beds created, benches replaced and new playground facilities installed. A curious initiative is the distribution of 100,000 doggie bags each year at several outlets within the BradďŹ eld Parish area, to support dog walkers in doing the right thing. Constant monitoring is in place to ensure that the current number of litter and dog waste bins is maintained, and regularly serviced. So, whilst our volunteers are busy working in the background, you can enjoy the clean, green and safe countryside you deserve.â€?

COUNCIL NOTES BradďŹ eld Parish has a rich built and cultural heritage. Members were reminded of this at the January Council Meeting when Ms Anna Badcock, Cultural and Heritage Manager for the National Park spoke to us about the work of her team. It includes tree protection, partnership working and specialist advice to the authority’s planners and the public. The heritage team work with land owners to mitigate risk to heritage and currently are partnership working successfully to deal with concerns associated with the Bailey Hill monument in High BradďŹ eld. We also had a presentation by Mr Chris Prescott a member of the BradďŹ eld “Walkers are Welcome Groupâ€? about his recent visit to Japan. Chris took with him a CD Photo ďŹ le of images of our Parish and letter of greeting from the Parish Council to the National Walking organisation of Japan. This was well received and Chris is hoping to arrange a “return matchâ€? by ramblers from Japan. Chris drew attention to a devastating Tsunami which on the 11th of March 2011 inundated Minamisanriku on the east coast of Japan, an area he visited. That March date is very signiďŹ cant to BradďŹ eld as Malcolm Nunn our Parish Archivist reminds us. Monday March 11th
and Tuesday March 12th 2019 marks the 155th anniversary of “The Great Sheffield Floodâ€?. Shortly before midnight Dale Dyke Reservoir burst send millions of gallons of water down the Loxley Valley and through Sheffield. It resulted in the deaths of some 240 people on the night and research shows that another 60 or so died later as a result of the ood. It has been tradition over the last 30 years to hold walks in the area on the actual date of the tragedy. The business of the Council is varied and interesting. Recently we have addressed the need for ongoing tree and woodland maintenance on 12 sites in Parish Council ownership. Contact with AMEY to address highway issues is a regular action. We really appreciate residents making us aware of pothole and other highway concerns. Over several months we have being in discussion with SCC highways officers and residents about the concerns in Oughtibridge about accidents at the multi road junction at Bridge Hill. There is to be a public consultation on a proposal to close Bridge )JMM NBJM ESPQ UI .BSDI and an officer contact session in the Zion Hall, Langsett Rd. HEROES
He came, he saw, he conkered ASHLEY BIRCH PAYS TRIBUTE TO A LOCAL LEGEND, WALTER HOLLAND.
ar from receiving messages from secret admirers, last Valentine’s Day my phone was full of messages from friends, letting me know the sad news of a ‘local legend’s’ passing. Walter Holland was 93 when he died on 14 February, and to me and all my mates he was a big part of our childhood, knocking about the Sheffield suburbs Hillsborough, Wisewood and Wadsley. In fact, if you’ve spent any time in S6 over the last 60 or 70 years, the likelihood is that, at one time or another, you will have encountered Walter, and he probably told you it was his birthday, and offered you a conker! My own memories of Walter include orange autumn days spent conkering for him in Wadsley churchyard, getting him the supplies, ready for him to string them on bits of blue nylon string to leave around the place alongside paper aeroplanes.
F
28 www.rmcmedia.co.uk
A friend of mine Cheryl Appleyard, remembers him as an ‘S6 treasure’ and recalls the time he ‘once gave me a picture of Prince Charles and a penguin!’ Another, Adam Jubby-Taylor, remembers the time that he ‘once seen him up a conker tree in Hillsborough park!’ However, aside from the fact that he lived in Middlewood Hospital, before moving into the supported housing complex Loxley Court, little was known about Walter’s early life by my generation. His niece Joan Allen told how he was born on Rockingham Street, in the city centre, before the family moved to Burners Drive, Arbourthorne in 1936. One of 12 children, when he was around two or three years old he took a nasty bump to the head, which led to complications. Joan said: “He had a nasty bang to his head at his mum’s house, on a big heavy
cabinet and it led to meningitis. Meningitis can be awkward and nasty now, but then it was an even bigger problem. It left him with very severe learning difficulties. “My grandma at that time was undergoing a kidney operation and it got to the point where she couldn’t cope with him [Walter]. My mum, his sister, used to bring him up a lot of the time, pushing him around in the pram, when she was around ten or 12.” “It was then that Walter was moved to the psychiatric hospital Middlewood Hospital. In those days there was more of a stigma attached to those sort of things,” says Joan: “I don’t know why but it was unfortunately what it was like in those days. “I think they tried to bring him home but he just kept running away and going back to the hospital. On one occasion they even found him sleeping in the
HEROES
wheelbarrow in the grounds of the hospital, because he wanted to get back.” As Walter grew up into his twenties and thirties he began working, baking cakes in the hospital’s bakehouse, and every Sunday he would walk all the way from Hillsborough to his mum’s house at Arbourthorne, where she’d cook him his dinner, do him his tea and pack him up. Joan didn’t see a lot of her uncle in her early years, and it wasn’t until later on in life when Walter was on Worrall Road, and her mum was unable to visit on her own, that she began taking her up to see him. She vowed to continue looking after him, taking up sweets, crisps, cakes, and his favourite red salmon to the care home. Joan said: “He had excellent carers, who really looked after him well. They were like his family. When we couldn’t be there, they were always there.” It was only through social media that Joan realised just how many other lives her uncle had touched. “Through Facebook I’ve read so many stories about him and it’s been quite enlightening.” says Joan: “I’m so surprised by how many people he’s been involved with, and how many lives he’s touched. It’s been brilliant, really, that one person
could make that much difference to people. “He’s had a varied and colourful life and he was purely innocent. He wouldn’t have hurt a fly, my Uncle Walter. He was more like a child and that’s probably why he identified with local kids so well.” Aside from handing treats out to locals, his pastimes were varied, with one of his big loves being trams. He could often be found on Hillsborough Corner, watching the Supertrams go past, and Joan’s husband Mick showed me the stacks of DVDs he had on the subject, recovered from Walter’s home. Perhaps his biggest passion though, was photography – or more accurately having his photograph taken. Joan said: “He always used to like taking photographs, and he liked to have them with ladies. He was definitely a ladies man. He used to like standing at the side of them and letting someone else take the photos.” Some of Walter’s other favourite pastimes he’d kept hidden from his niece, including his love of smoking. “We didn’t know he smoked at first. I once saw him in the Riverside pub as we’d got some shoes we’d had mended for him,”
says Joan. “And he was sitting there in a cloud of smoke, with a lemonade and some crisps. You couldn’t see him for smoke. We were shocked.” Some things, it seems, were the same in Joan’s memory as they were in ours though, as Joan recalls some common birthday presents. “Usually, if it was your birthday you’d either get a bottle of aftershave, or probably a KitKat wrapped up in paper and Sellotaped, and of course, conkers.”

There are several different methods used by modern brewers to produce sour beers. This particularly scrumptious offering is a tried and tested German style known as a Berliner Weisse. In a modern twist cranberries and blood oranges have been added. The cranberries bring a delightful tartness to the mix, whilst the blood orange provides a zesty body with a slight bitterness from the pith. The flavours

In a similar vein to Kernel, Brew by Numbers brew unswervingly excellent beers using high-end ingredients. The ‘DDH’ in the name of the beer stands for ‘Double Dry Hopped’. This a method employed by brewers to amplify the intensity of the hop flavours. This beer is no exception. The use of punchy American Hops Summit, Simcoe and Columbus provide big hitting flavours of grapefruit and citrus, with background notes of pineapple and mango combining to give a tropical hit. Small but perfectly formed THE MICROPUB IS QUICKLY BECOMING KING – AND HILLSBOROUGH SEEMS TO BE AT THE HEART OF THE ACTION. WE LOOK AT WHY SMALL BARS ARE ON THE RISE AND PICK OUT SOME TOP DRINKING SPOTS FOR YOU TO SAMPLE. ubs have had a raw deal over the last few years, with many struggling to move with the times. Closures have become ever more apparent, with almost one in four ceasing trading in the last ten years. The craft ale ‘revolution’ has breathed new life into the pub trade, particularly in Sheffield where we are often credited as being the world’s Craft Ale Capital. Forget your pint of Carling, you can now choose
P
from locally-brewed Saisons to IPAs from North America and beyond. City drinkers are truly spoilt for choice. As an aside to this rise in popularity of craft beers and real ales has been the inception of the micropub. Small, but perfectly formed, you usually see them springing up in old shop units – think a single room with a bar at one end serving a constantly-revolving mix of cask, keg and bottled beers. Some even offer rare collections of
gins or whiskies meaning they cater to every taste. You might get the feeling you’ve walked into someone’s front room but one thing that they do guarantee – apart from beer – is a cosy atmosphere, something lacking in many pubs today. Who says size matters? Hillsborough and the surrounding areas have seen an influx of micropubs in recent months – and there could be more on the way. We look at some of the best.
How are things going so far? Really good, we have had a great response from the local community and we already have plenty of regulars who wouldn’t normally go out local. What can you tell us about Brass Monkey? It’s a small micropub offering not just craft ales but specialises in gin too. If you come for a drink in our pub we can assure you there will be a drink for everyone’s taste. What beers do you have available? We currently have a good local brewery selection from Bradfield, Abbeydale, Don Valley and Loxley Breweries, but the ales change from week to week to give a variety of what these breweries have to offer. Any other drinks or food? We have a selection of 34 gins at the moment and that’s rising all the time. 34 www.rmcmedia.co.uk

Although we don’t have the facilities to provide our own food, we do have comfort snacks on Sundays like Yorkshire puds and roast potatoes supplied from our neighbours JAM Café. What makes micropubs so charming? I think the real charm is that it brings the conversation back to the pub as it is quite small and one thing we have noticed is that strangers strike up conversations across tables and there is a real sense of belonging. It’s like the old tap rooms used to be, which seem to have disappeared from the local pubs and bars. You seemed to have opened the door for other micropubs to come to Hillsborough, what’s the attraction of the area? Hopefully we have! Hillsborough is a
great area, with a lot of good pubs, it just got a bad reputation from the cheap beer, loud music venues which seemed to attract the wrong crowd. Talking to our regulars it is clear they wanted somewhere to relax, drink and chat that made them feel part of the community. How do you stand out from the crowd? Being a gin bar as well has really put us on the map, we knew gin was popular, but it is by far our best-seller. We also designed the interior to be more ‘homely’ and this creates a great atmosphere in the pub which people like.
out works, but none in the pub industry. This is our first venture and one we are hoping will be a long term success. What’s your plans for the future? We are concentrating on pushing Brass Monkey this year but hope to have more micro bars in the future dotted around Sheffield. Excited for Tramlines this year? Very excited. It’s a fantastic line up this year and I’m sure it will be the biggest yet. We are in the process of organising events and promotions for this year and Tramlines is the top of our list. We hope to have some really good promotions on for then.
What’s your background? All the directors have varying backgrounds, business, building and fit

A cut above CHOOSING A DIAMOND CAN BE A TRICKY PROCESS WITH SO MANY OPTIONS AND VARIATIONS IN PRICE. HERE, IN THE FIRST OF THEIR ‘DIAMOND BUYING GUIDE’ SERIES, THE EXPERTS AT PA JEWELLERY LOOK AT HOW A DIAMOND’S CUT CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE TO ITS APPEARANCE AND PRICE. ut can often be one of the more overlooked elements when choosing a diamond, but we regard it as one of the most important things to get right. This is about more than just the shape of the diamond; it influences how the diamond interacts with light and produces the beautiful sparkle and fire that the stone is renowned for. A stone with fine colour and clarity can still appear dull and lifeless if it is poorly cut. The most popular cut for diamond is the round brilliant, perfected over centuries to maximise the brilliance and fire the stone produces. Generations of expertise have combined to discover the optimum angles and proportions to ensure a perfect balance, and modern cutting techniques allow for elevated levels of precision in today’s diamonds. For example, the angle of the diamond’s back facets is crucial; if the stone is too shallow then light will escape from the back instead of reflecting out at the front, diminishing the brightness of the stone. Most of our diamonds have an
C

independent report from the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) with grades for cut, polish and symmetry in addition to colour and clarity. The grades relating to cut are expressed as Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair and Poor. Each diamond is assessed for how closely it approaches the specific angles
“The most popular cut for diamond is the round brilliant, perfected over centuries to maximise the brilliance and fire the stone produces.” and proportions that have been calculated as producing the best brilliance and fire. An Excellent cut grade means that the diamond is very close to the optimum angles and percentages, with lower grades indicating that the stone is further away from the ideal and therefore less
likely to reach its potential brilliance. With fancy shapes (those other than the round brilliant), there is no cut grade due to the variations in shape and proportions, but the stone will still be assessed for its polish and symmetry. Symmetry is especially important in fancy shapes as this can make a significant difference to the attractiveness of a stone. An even, well-proportioned outline is generally regarded as more pleasing to the eye, although personal preference plays a key role. Fancy shape diamonds do produce less brilliance than round brilliants, but a well-cut stone will still have more sparkle than one that is poorly cut. We have a team of highly qualified and experienced gemmologists and diamond graders who can advise you when choosing your diamond; able to answer your questions and reassure you at every stage in the process. ust how good was it? We’re talking about Tramlines 2018 of course and the unswerving success of its move to Hillsborough Park. Despite the trams choosing that weekend to go on strike, the sun shone, music played, ale was drunk, street food was scoffed and a good time was had by all. What were your highlights? Was it the Stereophonics rising out of the extended runway stage on the drizzly Friday night? Noel Gallagher dropping a few Oasis bombs as the sun went down on the Saturday or Craig David tapping into the summery feel good vibes on the Sunday? Then there was Tom Grennan, Milburn, Clean Bandit, Shed Seven, Blossoms… the list goes on. So the big question is, how do Tramlines top it? Can 2019 be better than last year? Here’s hoping. “Following on from the amazing party that was our tenth birthday, we’ve been working hard to make the festival better and to find artists that we’re excited about,” said Tramlines operations director Timm Cleasby. “I think we have some great artists that span generations. There’s more to come too, including, as usual, some great Sheffield favourites and new talent. I can’t wait, it’s going to be awesome and I hope everyone will join us for Sheffield’s biggest party.” Confirmed artists for the festival, which will be held on the weekend of 19-21 July, include headliners Two Door Cinema Club, Courteeners and Nile Rogers & Chic. Expect crowd-pleasing tracks such as ‘What You Know’, ‘Not Nineteen Forever’ and ‘Everybody Dance’ respectively, when these acts take to the Tramlines main stage. Other highlight performances will come from Wales’ finest, the Manic Street Preachers, with an impressive 13 albums-worth of material; Rag ‘n’ Bone Man, with his unique, soulful tones that appear in a fresh new setting on latest single ‘Giant’ with Calvin Harris; the highly anticipated return of indie outfit Doves after a nine-year hiatus; Madchester scene leaders the Happy Mondays; Sheffield heavyweights Reverend and the Makers; Miles Kane; Circa Waves, Lewis Capaldi; hedonistic South London four-piece Shame; and Peter Hook and the Light who will be performing New Order’s ‘Technique’ and ‘Republic’ live plus Joy Division material.

Continuing the not-to-be-missed acts is the Paul Weller-mentored The Rifles, Britpop rock band Sleeper – who are set to return with their first album in almost two decades – and the Everly Pregnant Brothers, who’ll bring their hilarious spoof covers. This comes alongside some of the finest UK emerging talents: the BBC Sound Of 2019 nominated Sea Girls; Liverpool four-piece Clean Cut Kid; Sports Team whose new track ‘M5’ was premiered by Annie Mac on Radio 1, and Easy Life who made it into Radio X’s Best New Bands for 2019 list. The breaking talent list continues with whenyoung, Another Sky, Anteros, Bloxx, Hey Charlie, Bedroom High Club, and flying the flag for Sheffield and South Yorkshire, Casey Lowry, Oddity Road, The Reytons, The Wired, The Seamonsters, Cora Pearl, and Children Of The State. Tramlines 2019 will again feature a side-splitting comedy line up programmed by the Leadmill, and its Into The Trees family-friendly area will return with even more activities and entertainment than before. MUSIC
Crowds at last year’s festival
Party atmosphere WENTWORTH MUSIC FESTIVAL IS ONE OF THE BIGGEST AND BEST SMALL FESTIVAL EXPERIENCES OF THE SUMMER – AND IT’S PERFECT FOR THE WHOLE FAMILY. BY CHRIS WILSON. entworth Music Festival is back for its third year on Saturday 15 June with the promise of being better than ever, while staying firmly in touch with the family-friendly reputation that won it a special place in the hearts of local people. There can be few music events in the country with a more spectacular setting. The backdrop is Wentworth Woodhouse, Europe’s biggest privately owned country house and subject to an ongoing £130millionplus masterplan aimed at restoring it to its former glory. Tony Hadley As well as being
W
48 www.rmcmedia.co.uk
steeped in history Wentworth Woodhouse has been used as a backdrop to many huge films and TV productions, most recently ITV’s Victoria and the big screen Winston Churchill film The Finest Hour. But as big names like Tony Hadley (formerly of Spandau Ballet), Republica and Doctor and the Medics prepare to bring their music to the grounds of this amazing 18th century mansion, the driving forces behind the event are
determined to maintain a strong link to the community. “Keep it local. Keep it small. Keep it family friendly,” says Matt Foster, one of the organisers. Around 1,800 people attended the first event in 2017 and that figure rose to over 3,000 last year. They’re on target for a 5,000-capacity sell-out this year and that, Matt reckons, is just about perfect. “We lost a pot load of money first time around and a decent amount last year,” he says. “This year we aim to break even and we will. “We’ve already sold over 3,000 tickets and you usually sell 70 per cent of tickets in the last three months for events like this, so we are delighted with the response.” Obviously the spectacular setting means there is potential for the festival to expand, but while future events may involve extra days and overnight
MUSIC
camping, Matt reckons bringing more people onto the site would not necessarily be an improvement. “If we sold 10,000 tickets it might mean more revenue and bigger names but it also might spoil the unique atmosphere of the festival,” he says. “This really is a special and unusual event. It’s a gig with top names in the grounds of a stately home. But Wentworth is officially part of Rotherham which we know is a challenging economic area. We have to bear that in mind at all times.” The idea for Wentworth Music Festival came from a discussion over a pint in the local pub between BBC Radio Sheffield’s Toby Foster and Steve White. Their aim was to create a fun family day out for their neighbours and friends. Matt, Toby’s brother, was living in Dubai at the time but returned to his South Yorkshire roots to dedicate himself to the festival. He reckons 80 per cent of last year’s attendance came from within ten miles. “The car park was empty 20 minutes after the festival ended,” he recalls. “That
was because we were very well organised but also because lots of people actually walked here from local villages like Wath and Greasbrough.” It’s been very much a case of “learning on the job” for Matt and the team and they are excited about the improvements they are making for this year’s festival. The fairground and food and drink stalls will be bigger and better, there will be a 100-foot long bar for quick service. “We’ll also be doing more for the kids. The family friendly aspect is very important and we want to make it more of an immersive experience for them,” he says. There will be four stages in total. The main stage will host the big names and topping the bill is Tony Hadley, who was lead singer with Spandau Ballet, one of the most successful groups of the new romantic era of British pop. With big hits like Gold, True and Chant No. 1, He’s sure to bring the festival to a rousing finale. Also on the main stage will be Doctor and the Medics, who had an international hit with their cover of
Spirit in the Sky in 1986 and Republica, best known for their nineties hit Ready To Go. Sheffield-based songwriter and music producer Eliot Kennedy, who has worked with everyone from the Spice Girls to Bryan Adams, will also be on the main stage along with special guests, while Abba Revival and Soul Sensation will add to the fun. More big names are set to be announced over the coming weeks. There is also a second music stage for new and unsigned bands and two comedy stages, one for grown-ups (and with Toby Foster’s involvement some fantastic talent is guaranteed) and one for kids. Confirmed names for the comedy stage so far include Rob Rouse, Ivan Brackenbury, Neil Fitzmaurice, Nina Gilligan and Justin Moorhouse. It all adds up to potentially the biggest and best small festival experience of the summer. And it’s right here on the doorstep. DO YOU REMEMBER?
Photos of yesteryear DO THESE PICTURES JOG YOUR MEMORY? o You Remember has always been one of the most popular features in Sixer and now we are expanding this section of the magazine, with more room for classic photographs from the past and extra space for our readers’ photos and reminiscences. So let’s start the ball rolling with a quartet of photographs from various vintages, all supplied by our old friend Barry Couldwell. Take a close look. Can you recognise any of the sportsmen from our local football team line-up? Then there is the railway station and the lovey scene depicting village life in a very different era. Harder to pin down might be the story behind the ladies in a countryside setting outside a large rambling house, with ivy growing up the walls onto the roof.
D
We know the answers are out there... tell us what you know! Last month’s photograph was supplied by Neil Anderson and was a throwback to the 1980s and 1990s when Sheffield’s sprawling Roxy nightclub attracted revellers from all over the country. With a capacity in excess of 2,000 and one of the most jaw-dropping lightshows in the country, The Roxy ruled supreme and became famous nationally as a base for the ‘Hitman & Her’ TV series – the dance music show fronted by Pete Waterman and Michaela Strachan. The ‘Is That Alright Fyuzs’ catchphrase of Geordie owner Barry Noble became synonymous with nightlife of the era. The Granada TV production – which ran from 1988 to 1992 – broadcast latenight clubbing direct from the Roxy right across the country.
Our image showed The Miss Glam Rock finalists from the competition held during The Roxy’s legendary rock nights. We don’t have a record of how many cans of hair spray were used or what damage was done to the ozone layer to perfect those stunning hairstyles! The Sheffield nightscene of the late 1980s was awash with a glut of popular nightclubs that ran religiously from 10pm until 2am – The Limit, Rebels, Josephines, Romeo & Juliets to name but a few. And on Saturday 4 May for one night only, the era that spawned all-conquering Sheffield acts like the Human League and ABC, is set to be revisited with a massive Back to the Roxy party. The event takes place in the former Roxy building – which is now the 02 Academy on Arundel Gate.

EATING OUT
Old favourite ONE OF CROOKES’ ORIGINAL RESTAURANTS HAS STOOD THE TEST OF TIME – WITH EXCITING PLANS FOR 2019. BY CHRIS WILSON. ne of the more interesting developments in recent years on the Sheffield restaurant scene has been the upsurge in dining and drinking options available in the suburb of Crookes. From daytime cafes and micro-pubs to new restaurants, this ever-more-lively strip in S10 has undergone a revival, but let’s not forget the originals who started it all. Firmly in this category is the consistently excellent Jaflong, an Indian restaurant run by the Uddin family from Bangladesh and at the heart of the community since 1998. Owner Shahab Uddin bought the business from his uncle in 2005 and although it only seems like five minutes since Jaflong moved from the original modest ‘front room’ setting up the hill to its current modern premises, more change is coming Plans for 2019 include a change of décor and lighting and a new waiting area. Meanwhile one source of constant change is the menu. Shahab is the main chef and loves introducing more choices, adding five or six new dishes every year. This dedication has been repaid with many loyal repeat customers including one party who come from Lincolnshire,
O
eat dinner and then load up their car with ten takeaway meals including rice and bread for the freezer to see them through the next few weeks. It’s not hard to understand why Jaflong enjoys such devotion. It’s a bright, spacious restaurant with friendly, prompt service and a menu that, thanks to Shahab’s determination to constantly add new dishes, is certainly not lacking in variety. We started our meal in the timehonoured fashion with a couple of beers (Cobra for me, Cobra Zero for my friend Martin – bonus points to Jaflong for stocking one of the finer alcohol-free lagers), crunchy popadoms (50p each) and the well-stocked chutney tray (£3). Starters of mixed kebab (sheek, onion bhaji and shami £4.50) and mixed bhaji (vegetable samosa, onion bhaji and aloo chop £3.90) brought no surprises but were beautifully fresh with an abundance of fragrant herbs and punchy spices. For mains I chose one of Shahab’s regional specials, the Jaflong Koli (£14.95). This unique combination of king prawns, prawns, paneer, coriander, garlic and spices was mildly spiced but full of rich flavours. Martin asked for some advice in seeking out a vegetarian dish with a bit
of heat and the vegetable jalfrezi (£12.95) delivered the goods. With Indian food the side dishes are all-important and, as usual, we overordered but still managed to make a sizeable dent in a table filled with delectable tastes and textures. The chilli and garlic nan (£3.50) was a real star, light and fragrant and nicely scorched. Matar paneer (£4) never fails to please with its combination of spicy cheese and peas, pilau rice (£3.25) was light and fluffy, Bombay aloo (aka spicy potatoes, £6.95) did not stint on the chillies. We are blessed with some excellent Indian restaurants in Sheffield and Jaflong certainly ranks among the best and with décor changes and an everexpanding menu a return trip has to be on the cards. Owls fan tackles prostate cancer
Quilt to quit
On 4 October 2016, lifelong Sheffield Wednesday fan, Peter Allen was diagnosed with advanced and incurable prostate cancer. As part of Weston Park Cancer Charities Derby Day takeover at Hillsborough Stadium, Peter shared his journey and encouraged others to get checked and open up about prostate cancer. Like a lot of men he ignored the symptoms until he developed severe back pain. Following a number of tests and hospital visits, Peter underwent a CT scan and within a matter of days, he received an urgent phone call from the urology department at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital, which resulted in an emergency appointment and biopsy. The appointment was just a week after Peter’s 60th birthday. “As soon as I entered the consultation room I knew that I was looking at something serious. The consultant was very direct and said: I’m 99 per cent certain you have advanced prostate cancer. “I felt like my world had ended – and yes, I cried. I couldn’t take it in and the tests that followed confirmed the diagnosis.” Peter’s treatment began with hormone implants, designed to lower testosterone levels – on which prostate cancer ‘feeds’. Shortly after, he was referred to Weston Park Hospital, where he received six sessions of chemotherapy.

Striding out for charity Steel City Striders made donations of £6,700 from the proceeds of last year’s Percy Pud 10k with £1,000 to each of the following charities: Sheffield Childrens Hospital, Weston Park Cancer Care, Ethel Trust Community Barge, Sense Charity for the DeafBlind & Extreme Disabilities and the St Lukes Hospice Charity, who also Richard Dunk (PP Race Director) presents raised £4,421 from runners who ran with a cheque to St Lukes Hospice Charity Striders donated places. The Rivelin Valley Conservation Group received £500 with £1,000 divided between Bradfield and Loxley good causes, plus £200 to the S6 Food Bank. All Christmas puddings (and custard) left over from runners who failed to run were distributed to a local foodbank and homeless soup kitchen. 58 www.rmcmedia.co.uk
In our fast-paced world, with stressrelated illness becoming more prevalent, it is increasingly important to maintain a healthy work-life balance. If that balance includes any kind of crafting, there are additional benefits around keeping your hands and mind active. A recent Sheffield initiative, Quilt to Quit, offered pregnant smokers a starter pack of quilting templates, fabric, sewing thread, needle and easy-to-follow instructions. The women were given an initial demonstration of sewing techniques and then one-to-one specialist advice and support on a weekly basis. Every week they received additional templates and material. It was argued that quilting gave the women something to do with their hands, taught them a new skill, and had the added benefit of them making a gift for their new baby. Many crafting activities tend to be solitary, which is why it can be important to spend time with like-minded people undertaking your hobby. Most craft shops will offer knit and natter or “sew social” sessions to encourage crafters to spend time together. Happy Hare is based in Chapeltown, Sheffield. They offer a range of craft classes, many of which are suitable for beginners. They also offer activities for kids during the school holidays.
Energy Saving Tips from Bumfords Here are some top energy-saving tips from Bumfords to make sure you stay snug through the last days of winter without sending heating bills through the roof. This month it’s all about hot water. • Keep your showering time to a minimum, or better still invest in a shower monitor to keep an eye on how much hot water you are using. • Insulate your immersion tank. This will keep your water hotter for longer. • If your boiler is over 15 years old it is time to consider replacing it. A new energy efficient boiler and controls could save you up to £340 per year. *source: Energy Savings Trust • Install a hot water cylinder jacket. This could save you up to £35 a year. *source: Energy Saving Trust • Apply pipe insulation. This could save you up to £10 per year. *source: Energy Saving Trust

Specsavers Hillsborough backs Comic Relief with sale of funny frames Specsavers once again supported Comic Relief and the store in Hillsborough got in on the act by selling funny frames which are sure to raise a smile. It is the third Red Nose Day that Specsavers has supported the charity by launching the frames in store, with this year’s red glasses jester theme in keeping with the charity’s comic ethos. Since 2015, Specsavers stores have raised £848,000 and pledged to raise £250,000 this year in their quest to break the £1million mark. This was done through the sale of the Comic Relief frames, which cost just £2, with 100 per cent of the proceeds going to the charity. They were available to buy in stores and, for the first time, the Comic Relief website. Lorna Armitage, retail director at Specsavers Hillsborough, said: “Our glasses this year are fantastic and we hope everyone gets into the fundraising spirit by picking up a pair in store and help us smash our £1million fundraising mark. We are really proud to support Comic Relief and all the good causes they fund.”

Luxury Seven Say hello to the flagship saloon in the BMW range – the 7-Series. Built to rival the Mercedes S-Class, the 7Series is perfect companion for any successful businessman. The 7-Series has had a major overall of interior and exterior design features. On the outside, it has an updated front grille where the company’s signature “kidney grille” design is enhanced even more for a much more purposeful road presence. On the inside, there is as much tech as the latest rocket mission to space. Offered in both long and short wheelbase forms, the 7-Series also comes with some new engines ranging from an in-line six cylinder to a 585hp 6.6-litre 12-cylinder powerhouse. On sale 13 April. Priced from £69,430.
After the recent release of the all-new Kia Ceed, Kia has released the ProCeed variant. In the past, the ProCeed was the stylish coupe variant, not so this time. This time it’s a stylish shooting brake design inspired by the 2017 concept. Following the sportier DNA of the ProCeed compared to the normal hatchback and estate variant, the ProCeed is lower and longer for a better silhouette. The engines available will be 138hp 1.4-litre turbocharged petrol, a 1.6-litre common rail diesel engine and a 201hp 1.6-litre available in the top of the range ‘GT’ performance variant. Available with either a manual or seven-speed DualClutch-Transmission depending on which spec is chosen. As with every Kia, a seven-year warranty is offered. Available now. Priced from £23,835.
Fastback Hyundai After the success of the bonkers i30N hatchback, Hyundai has taken a leaf out of the Mercedes design department by creating a ‘fastback’ or shooting brake shape. As with the hatchback variant, the Fastback N will come with the 271hp 2.0-litre petrol engine but unlike the hatchback, there is less interior room overall at the expense of a more good-looking and desirable design. However, with a 450-litre boot and five-doors, the Fastback N can easily perform any job that is expected from it. Standard equipment includes LED head and tail lights, cruise control, keyless entry with engine start/stop button and a standard 8” Touchscreen Satellite Navigation system, that includes Android Auto and Apple Car Play. Available now. Priced at £29,995.
Top down A lighter, more focused example of the 570S is finally here. The long wait for the new convertible LT in the McLaren line-up is over. As with the 600LT Coupe, the Spider will come with a fully carbon fibre monocoque, which allows for no structural change allowing the Spider to perform exactly how the Coupe performs. The familiar 3.8-litre twin-turbo V8 will be the only engine available producing 592hp and 620Nm of torque achieving a 0-62mph time of 2.9 seconds and a top speed on 201mph with thanks to a seven-speed SSG gearbox. Compared to the Coupe, the Spider weights 50kg extra but 100kg less than the 570S Spider. Available to order now, priced from £201,500 with limited availability. 72 www.rmcmedia.co.uk
