PULSECONTENTS
EDITOR’S MESSAGE: team of intrepid walkers is gearing up to tackle the Acorn Amble next month. This 20 annual 22-mile trek from Castleton to Burncross (page 20) has raised an astonishing amount for charity since it began in 1996 – but can it break the £100,000 barrier this year? I spoke to the organisers to find out how they’re working harder than ever to make sure it does. Not long after the walkers have passed 38 through High Bradfield, the classical music festival that now attracts internationally renowned artists will be back for another year. Read all about Bradfield Festival of Music 2015 on page 38. We also take a look at some local businesses in Grenoside to see what they have to offer customers in S35 and beyond (page 13). If you have a story to share, are hosting an event that you’d like us to publicise or have photographs of a recent celebration or event, we’d love to hear from you. Email stephanie.burns@regionalmagazine.co.uk or call me on 0114 250 6300 (Monday to Thursday 9am-5.30pm and Friday 9am-4pm). If you have a business and would like to advertise in Pulse, please call Publishing Manager Helen Wragg on 0114 250 6300 or email helen.wragg@regionalmagazine.co.uk. You can also follow us on Twitter (@PulseRMC) or read Pulse (and the rest of Regional Magazine Company’s titles) online at www.regionalmagazine.co.uk.

PROMOTIONMORFITT SMITH
If you are looking to buy a house or find a rental property, fast-growing estate agency Morfitt Smith can help. s the dedicated runners were tackling Ecclesall Road on the Sheffield Half Marathon’s new route last month, another newcomer to Banner Cross was also making its
A
mark. Independent estate agent Morfitt Smith, established in Hillsborough in the summer of 2013, opened its brand new office on that same Sunday and is already drawing interest from homeowners and landlords alike. Because, as well as a superb sales service for which the business has become renowned all over the city, the new branch also offers a specialist lettings service. As the rental market continues to grow, there is a huge demand for landlords and hot rental properties are not hanging around for long. But it’s not just existing landlords who can benefit. If you are considering letting a property for investment or as an alternative to selling, Morfitt Smith can offer excellent advice on how to become a successful landlord. The new branch isn’t the only exciting news that Morfitt Smith has announced this year. They were also proud to have been shortlisted in the Best Estate Agent in Yorkshire and Humberside category at the prestigious 2015 ESTAs (Estate and Letting Agent Awards), held at Hilton Park Lane in London. A highly commendable feat for a business established less than two years ago. But when you consider all that John Morfitt and his talented team have done since first launching on
Middlewood Road, it’s clear to see why they have attracted such praise. Priding themselves on their personal touch, they are determined to find the From left: Paul, John, Anita, right client for the right Karen, Alex, Josh home, rather than simply selling or letting a property without a second thought. They know that choosing an estate agent to sell or rent your home is a big decision and go out of their way to ensure the entire process is as stress-free as possible. Combining traditional old-fashioned values with modern practices, they offer the best service possible. Their comprehensive website and active social media accounts are excellent resources for sellers, buyers and landlords. Vendors have their own login details and online personal file so they can keep track of developments in their sale. And buyers can create a wish list, which can be changed at any time, putting them in control of the house buying experience. Morfitt Smith is one local company on the up and is looking forward to a bright future. To see how they can help you, and for more information on selling or letting your property, don’t hesitate to contact them via the details below. Sheffield Glazing For an affordable solution to misty Windows, call Sheffield Glazing. Owner Graham Warsop has more than 30 years’ experience in the industry and has worked on both the manufacturing and installation sides of the business. Now specialising in installation, he knows this industry inside out and is proud to offer fantastic products at very reasonable prices. “After a period of time, the seal between the two pieces of glass in a double glazed window unit breaks down and causes a misty effect,” explains Graham. “When this happens, it means they no longer have any thermal efficiency or sound proofing and heat loss can become a big problem. Graham fits the latest energy efficient glass into existing frames of any size, which can save people a lot of money. The Pilkington KS glass sealed units fitted as standard are argon gas filled and manufactured to BSI standard. He also carries out repairs on any type of frame and any aspect of glazing, including the glass in conservatory roofs and patio door units.
The Beauty Room The Beauty Room endeavours to offer a personal and luxurious service to all their clients. With three well-appointed treatment rooms, a well-lit make-up room and private spray tan room, you will be able to relax and enjoy your time there. Featuring all aspects of beauty, with each therapist specialising in different areas to give you the best from your treatments, The Beauty Room offers everything from nails and spray tans through to massage and even intimate waxing with a therapist who has been specialising in this area for around ten years. Pete's Chippy MAIN STREET • GRENOSIDE
ABOVE: A lush green carpet is now a source of pride
What’s the secret to a beautiful lawn... this season? ith summer just around the corner, now is the time for our thoughts to turn to the garden and our lawns in particular. Is your lawn looking as green, healthy and weed free as it should? If the grass is lacklustre, perhaps with unsightly bare patches or clumps of weeds or moss, then the chances are your lawn needs some TLC. But if the idea of going to the DIY store, buying preparations and spending precious time over the weekend putting down feed-and-weed products on your lawn does not appeal, then help is at hand. GreenThumb are lawn care experts who will keep your lawn looking healthy and green for less than it would cost you to do the job yourself. Our pictures – taken just weeks apart – show how in only a short time a patchy lawn can be transformed into a lush, green sward with no weeds. GreenThumb’s value-for-money lawn treatments start at just £16 for a small garden and the average treatment is only £22. We can also help your lawn stay greener during hot summers, tackle pests or diseases that attack grass and give your grass the best chance of avoiding moss in the winter.

Walk organisers Chris Blantern, Amy Grayhurst, Jonathan Jones and Russ Kelly
BEST FEET FORWARD It started as a spur-of-the-moment idea in the pub, but the Acorn Amble now attracts hordes of charity walkers and is set to reach a very special milestone. icture the scene: you’re in the pub with your friends on a Friday night and someone asks what you’re planning to do with your Saturday. Your answer – most probably – will not be that, on the spur of the moment, you’ll be trekking more than 20 miles from the heart of the Peak District to the very same pub you’re currently sitting in. But then, you’re not Chris Blantern. It was back in 1996 that Chris and a group of mates who regularly met at the Acorn Inn in Burncross decided to tackle this most unlikely challenge, all in the name of charity. It was only when the 14 walkers had completed what would become known as the Acorn Amble, and were enjoying their fair share of celebratory pints afterwards, that they garnered interest from so many other pub regulars that they decided to continue the tradition the following year. Apart from 2001, when the foot-andmouth disease outbreak caused the event to be cancelled, it has taken place every year since. Sheffield Children’s Hospital Charity benefitted from the £1,300 worth of donations in response to that very first walk and, to date, a grand total of £95,870.34 has been raised for a variety of local and national charities. This year, the walk takes place on 6 June and they’re hoping to break the £100,000 barrier. “Never in a million years did I think we’d raise this much,” says Chris incredulously. “We were just a group of guys from the pub that went for a walk and now some years we’re oversubscribed!”
P

It’s an early start on the Saturday morning as up to 80 walkers head to the Acorn Inn for around 6.30am. A troop of volunteers – including a group from Chris’ company Hi-Point Access Limited – then ferries them over to Castleton to begin the walk in earnest at around 7.30am. The route travels via ‘very pleasant terrain’ down to Edale, past Ladybower, to Low Bradfield, up to High Bradfield and over to Oughtibridge before reaching the Acorn Inn by mid-to-late afternoon. For those not able to complete the full 22 miles, there is an

option to be picked up or dropped off by the back-up team at one of the three checkpoints along the way – Ladybower, Low Bradfield (which includes bacon butties at The Plough) and The Pheasant in Oughtibridge. However, there’s an unspoken rule that everyone must walk the final stretch down Bracken Hill towards the Acorn Inn as the walkers are cheered back in to an amazing atmosphere. The challenge is helped enormously by the supportive brewery that owns the pub, Greene King, and all the staff and managers who have pitched in over the years. Current manager Amy Grayhurst, who took the reins last Christmas, is even joining in the trek herself this year. The back-up team (otherwise known as the unofficial Acorn Amble ‘committee’) is also invaluable. Currently comprising around eight or nine volunteers, they ensure the event is a success year after year and keep the organisation rigid. Walkers are given a number on the day and a pack which contains a map of the route and the phone numbers of the back-up team in case they get into difficulty. Every walker is counted out at Castleton and counted back in at the pub and the back-up team doesn’t rest until everyone is back safely with a pint in their hand. Last month, eager to spread their fundraising wings beyond the walk itself, they held a charity evening at the pub with a raffle, complimentary bar snacks and an auction. The event raised £1,000 and was attended by the Lord Mayor, councillor Peter Rippon, whose charity Sheffield Carers Centre, along with EDS (EhlersDanlos Support UK), will benefit this year. Auction items kindly donated by local businesses included a signed SWFC shirt, SUFC tickets, memorabilia signed by One Direction’s Louis Tomlinson, a central heating boiler service by Chapeltown Gas, high street shopping vouchers, a meal at The Wortley Arms, a meal for two at Napoleons Casino Owlerton,

tickets for Lord of the Dance at Sheffield City Hall, Manor Operatic tickets and many more. The last couple of years have set high standards as £6,500 was raised for Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice last year and £7,600 for Macmillan Cancer Support in 2013. Each year, the walkers nominate national or local causes and the charity is decided by a group vote at a publicised committee meeting. “How much we raise depends on the charity we’re raising money for that year,” says Russ Kelly, who has been involved in the walk – either by taking part or as a back-up team member – since he moved to Burncross from High Green. “Charities such as Bluebell Wood, MacMillan Cancer Support and St Luke’s Hospice, which we raised £10,000 for in 2010, have done very well because they’re well known and close to a lot of people’s hearts.” And when Russ says that people really make an event of it, he’s not kidding. People have often sported fancy dress costumes over the years but, in 2013, a group of guys took it one step further. Snow White and her seven dwarves were quite a sight to behold as they made their way through the countryside – stopping at almost every pub they came across along the way. Clearly, you don’t have to be a seasoned marathon runner to complete the walk, but a certain standard of fitness is expected. “We say it’s a walk in the park – the Peak District National Park,” jokes Chris. “I’m hoping younger people will start getting on board. I’m 55 so I’ve got another five years I reckon. One local guy, Stuart Marsden, who has done about 90 per cent of the walks, is in his mid-60s now. He once got back at the unbelievable time of 1pm.” Though, fortunately, there have never been any accidents, the walks haven’t been without a bit of drama. In 2011, one group went the wrong way and got 12 miles towards Manchester when they had to be rescued by Russ and taken to Low Bradfield, where they completed the rest of the walk. “Technically, they did all the miles, they just didn’t do the correct route,” says Russ. Ironically, the chosen charity was Yorkshire Air Ambulance – though thankfully he saved them from having to use the service. This community event is open to all but places are limited. To get involved, register your details by filling in a form at the Acorn Inn or by emailing back-up team member Jonathan Jones on j.jones16@sky.com, and then start fundraising! No minimum amount is required, everyone is simply asked to raise as much as they can. Maybe the local pub on a Friday night would be a good place to start?

FROZEN IN TIME Edwardian Ecclesfield is captured on camera as locals pose for a photo… but do you know anything about them? cclesfield residents from the early 20th century are the focus of this month’s Looking Back image. Taken in 1906, the photograph shows the occupants of the cottages on Hill Top, Yew Lane, many of whom have been identified. On the left, Mrs Hartley is carrying Annie and Susannah Witham is carrying Connie. At the back, Mrs Stringer is standing in the road and Janet Johnson is on the pavement next to her. Colin Witham is in the doorway and three-year-old Jack Witham – crying because he needed the loo – is next to him. The young children on the far right are Albert Beard and Ethel Green and the dog at the front of the photograph is Bellman, who belonged to the Greens. The picture is courtesy of Cyril Slinn and is taken from ‘Around Sheffield Then & Now’ by Geoffrey Howse. PULSEIN BRIEF
A beautiful taste of college life Ten Year 11 pupils from Barnsley Academy visited the Images commercial salon at Barnsley College for hands-on taster sessions in current hair and beauty techniques. The pupils watched a short film of the college’s Alternative Hair show from 2014, which showcased the work of students studying hairdressing, beauty, make-up and barbering and featured unusual hair and make-up techniques. They then had a go at curling and styling each other’s hair. The group was shown traditional hair curling methods and tried out new curling equipment and appliances. The pupils tried basic manicure techniques, incorporating a hand and arm massage, before finishing with their choice of nail polish. Jayne Parkinson, head of year at Barnsley Academy, said: “It’s great to bring the pupils to the college as it gives them the
opportunity to not only try out tasters of the courses on offer, but also to experience a little about college life.” To find out more about studying hair and beauty at Barnsley College, call the information team on 01226 216 123 or email info@barnsley.ac.uk.

Free college bus service for students
Ladies face 72-hole golf challenge When Debbie Travis, lady captain at Tankersley Park Golf Club, was approached by fellow member Cath to see if she was interested in a 72-hole golf challenge in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support, she wasn’t sure if she could manage such a task. “I thought that 72 holes would be nearly impossible – how would my feet feel and would I be able to manage the full 72? I then stopped and thought that, if people with cancer suffer every minute of every day, then surely I can suffer for approximately 16 hours! “We could all probably say that we know of someone who is or has suffered terribly with cancer. I have a twin brother who suffers with prostate cancer at the age of 52 and a very close friend who is suffering with mouth and neck cancer at the age of 57.” Debbie and Cath recruited their vice captain and the past captain for their team of four and set about raising money for the challenge. In just two weeks, they reached nearly £2,000. The challenge will take place on Tuesday 23 June and they will be teeing off at 5am to make the most of the daylight hours. The bus service has been introduced to give students from outside the district the opportunity to study at Barnsley College without having to worry about the cost of travel. The bus will pick up students from Kimberworth, Thorpe Hesley, Ecclesfield, Chapeltown, High Green, Birdwell and Worsbrough in a morning and return after lessons finish. The new service will operate alongside two current free routes from Stocksbridge, via Penistone, and from Shelley. The college’s head of student services, Louise Simpson, said: “We are pleased to be able to offer this new free bus service to the many students from Rotherham and north Sheffield who study with us. Crossfit introduces a unique way of training to the Steel City The Crossfit SC1 gymnasium, which has just expanded into new premises at Hillfoot Road in Sheffield, is becoming a real success by offering its members maximum results in a very short period of time. Head coach Andy, who runs Crossfit SC1, has 20 years’ experience in the fitness industry and became Sheffield’s first qualified Crossfit instructor. He now judges competitions at international level. Andy leads a team that coaches everyone from beginners to elite athletes, runs popular ladies-only sessions and offers physiotherapy. “It’s all about the friendship and the feeling of community. At most gyms, you turn up to a faceless row of machines, try to motivate yourself to do a workout, and that’s pretty much it. At Crossfit SC1, you are part of a growing family. I set your daily workout, there are always personal targets to reach, and you are never on your own as friends are with you to help and encourage,” says Andy. New members are always welcome at Crossfit SC1, where there is an easy pay-as-you-go scheme and no commitment. Group sessions can be organised if your team wants to try something different in their training, and the gym space is also available for hire. If you want to get stronger and fitter in your chosen sport, SC1 is the perfect complement. Find out more at www.crossfitsc1.co.uk or www.facebook.com/CrossfitSc1 or call Andy on 07946 437753.

Junior memberships, costing just £84, include free junior coaching. Both new and existing members will be pleased to hear that
H
TPGC has just finalised an agreement with the nearby Pete Cowen Golf Academy for all members to receive discounts on range balls and other items. They are also delighted to announce that Sport England has agreed to provide a grant of £62,660 to enable the golf club to develop a professional practice facility, including floodlit driving range bays, practice green and bunker. This will provide golfers with a vastly improved year-round practice facility. The land has a fascinating past, with many uses over the last few centuries. It was an oak forest, a civil war battlefield, a baronial deer park, a coal and ironstone mining area and even a battle tank testing ground before being transformed into a beautifully manicured golf course. Today, the modern, well-equipped clubhouse is the host of many social events and dinner dances throughout the year and boasts spectacular views over the surrounding countryside. Throughout the course, players enjoy fine views of the Wentworth area, Hoober Stand and Admiral Keppel’s Column. MAESTRO CLASS How does a village music festival attract some of the best classical performers in the world?
or one week each summer, a quaint North Sheffield village transforms into a bustling hub for classical musicians, composers, singers and the hundreds of people who come to see them perform. The reason? Bradfield Festival of Music, the history of which can be traced back to the early 19th century. Since its modern revival in 1998, the week-long event has welcomed thousands of classical music enthusiasts Words: Stephanie Burns from across the country. From Saturday 20 to Saturday 27 June this year, the medieval Grade I listed Parish Church of St Nicholas in High Bradfield will once again provide a spectacular setting for the festival, with world-class acts making the most of Ella the 900-year-old Taylor building’s excellent acoustics. “It’s a unique setting with a unique sound,” says festival secretary
38 PULSE MAGAZINE
F
Keith Hoyland. “We don’t use any amplification so all you hear is pure sound with the acoustics of the church. Our president Julian Lloyd Webber always says there’s nowhere better on earth to play when the church is full.” For the past two years, an impressive 90 per cent turnout has ensured the 300-strong audiences at each of the seven concerts enjoy this optimum sound. The intimate venue, where artists play just a couple of feet from the front row, enhances the atmosphere even further and people often comment on how wonderful it is to experience the performances away from vast concert halls. It’s little wonder, then, that the festival continues to go from strength to strength. What began as a platform for local and amateur musicians has grown greatly in confidence and now features the industry’s internationally acclaimed stars. Having established good contacts with renowned music agents, and pitching years in advance for top performers, the festival organisers are able to secure some truly outstanding acts. “Sometimes people don’t believe that we get the artists we get – especially Classic Brit Awards winners who we have year by year,” says Keith proudly. “Julian works as a talent spotter and gives me an early heads-up about people who are likely to be coming into the limelight – those who are at the start of their career and making leaps and bounds into the classical music industry. “We’ve already booked most of our artists for 2016 and 2017 and my favourite part of the festival is trying to introduce new artists to Sheffield as many have never been to the area before.” It’s this kind of thinking that sees artists such as Romanian/Nigerian pianist Rebeca Omordia (Justin’s

recommendation for this year) grace the programme. For the first time, she’ll be performing alongside the 2013 Classical Brit Awards Breakthrough Artist of the Year, Australian saxophonist Amy Dickson, in a partnership created especially for the Bradfield festival. While the organisers aim to introduce new genres of music to entice even more people to the festival, some acts are so popular there is demand for them to return. As a result, 4 Girls 4 Harps, who played the festival in 2012, will take to the stage once again alongside Sheffield soprano Ella Taylor this year. Everyone who attends the festival receives a complimentary 20page brochure that details all events taking place through the week. It also includes a sneaky peak of what to expect next year so regular attendees can start discussing their favourites before the current event has even finished. “Our regular followers give us hints about who they want to see and we always try to follow up these recommendations,” says Keith. “We’ve developed our own little festival community over the years and people from all over the UK come for a week’s holiday so we have to put on a good show.” To maintain the high standards, great teamwork is essential in the smooth running and success of the festival and they’re always looking for new volunteers to come on board. From a couple of hours helping out to becoming fully involved with the organisation committee or even assisting Keith with PR and marketing, if you’re interested in being part of this year’s event – or would like to get involved next year – contact Keith on the details below. In the meantime, book your tickets early and don’t miss the chance to see some of the world’s finest classical musicians when they perform right here in Bradfield this summer.

COMPLETE KITCHEN & BEDROOM SOLUTIONS
From a replacement worktop to a whole new kitchen or bedroom, there’s no job too small for CKB. aving traded out of 133 Middlewood Road for over six years now, the Sheffield public are becoming well aware of the high quality, bespoke service on offer at Complete Kitchens and Bedroom Solutions. Owned by Scott Webster, CKB offer a complete kitchen and bedroom service alongside the capability of anything from removing walls to building extensions. Scott said: “When you come to us you really do get everything. Building work, electrics, plastering, decoration, fitting, flooring – this is a one-stop-shop.” But just because Scott and his team can perform complete renovations, that doesn’t mean that they have to. CKB understand that not everybody can afford top to bottom renovations at this moment in time so are more than happy to work on anything from replacing a single kitchen unit upwards. “I can do eight metres of worktop and a new sink and tap for £950 or a whole kitchen or bedroom – so people can have whatever they can budget for,” said Scott. “And if you have your own electrician or plumber that you would like to use then you are more than welcome to do so. We will do as little or as much as you wish.” A feature of CKB which sets it apart from many of its competitors is that it manufactures everything on site, giving it a bespoke service. This means it can cater to any needs or desires. Scott employs a close team of dedicated workers including a registered electrician, and plumber, as well as qualified plasterer, brick layers and window fitters, who are all contracted to CKB. Gloss doors particularly in white and cream are in vogue at the current time. This gives a room a fresh appearance and Scott has seen requests for this design boom.
H
Consequently Scott is offering deals on an Astro white and cream gloss – check in at the showroom or give him a call for more deals. Scott doesn’t Mr and Mrs Carter, S20 believe in such gimmicks as Fitted April 2015 offering customers ten per cent off their total bill though. “These are often used to pull the wool over people’s eyes. I offer competitive prices from the word go.” Should you contact CKB, Scott will come out to view your home for a free appointment. The visit normally lasts for an hour depending on job size. “I don’t give quotes off-the-cuff. I am meticulous when it comes to pricing, so post-appointment I will go through everything and provide an accurate, itemised and fair quote.” Scott is the initial point of contact for customers and he not only designs his work but does the fitting too. Once Scott has committed to a job he dedicates all his time to it from inception to completion. He guarantees that he will not be working on multiple projects at one time and is even willing to turn down work to be able to do this. “My customers like to know that I will always be there and that they have my undivided attention. That is the least they deserve and will get when they come to me.” As such his customers can contact him 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Doors and worktops are guaranteed for a decade but for extra peace of mind Scott ensures that payment comes in instalments and that the full fee is not paid until the job has been completed satisfactorily. For a company that will provide your home with undivided, specialist and bespoke attention, give CKB a call today!

What makes good writing? Kip McGrath’s David Kaye explains …
RMaths RReading REnglish RSpelling R SATs & GCSE exam prep
ow many adults, let alone children, find writing difficult? Why do we make so many mistakes? How can we improve our writing? Writing is a creative process and we have to be active in it. There are many elements, including handwriting, spelling, vocabulary, punctuation, grammar, syntax and the organisation of ideas. All of these must be mastered if any sense is to be made, but it is quite a list to get through. Many times as a teacher, I have encountered children learning higher-order punctuation when they cannot reliably use a capital letter or full stop. I have observed young writers attempting longer pieces when they are unable to form a simple sentence. The first step to good writing is speaking. If a child is unable to speak clearly with meaning, they will not be able to write. It is worth considering what sort of speaking and listening happens in the home. Is it passive listening in front of a television? Is talk in the home of a functional nature, for example: ‘Come downstairs, tea is ready’? Talk for writing needs to be rich so try discussing something topical. Always encourage open conversation and try to model it as accurately as possible. Children should be made aware of poor grammar, slang and dialect. A child who is able to speak clearly, with good grammar and a wide vocabulary, will be in an excellent position to write well. This leaves us with the mechanics of writing: handwriting, spelling and punctuation. Of these three, most people will find spelling the most difficult. This is not surprising as we have so many exceptions to our spelling rules. For each aspect of writing, time and practice is needed to fully embed each element. Children spend a large proportion of their time in school on writing, yet they are also expected to deal with more elements at an earlier age. Writing can be improved with more time to reinforce and practise those elements taught in school so their accurate use becomes habit. It also requires self-discipline on the part of the writer so errors are not ignored when editing.

PROMOTIONJ K FENCING
Spring is in the air – but does your garden make you want to bury your head in the sandpit? o-one wants to spend their valuable leisure time weeding the borders or cutting the grass and, if you enjoy entertaining family and friends or you have kids, a low maintenance outside area can mean you can join in the fun instead of missing out. The people at J K Fencing & Landscapes Ltd know a thing or two about creating a space that you can enjoy all year round. Founder and director John Kendall has more than 20 years’ experience in the fencing and landscaping industry. Working alongside his wife Dawn, the business is a family affair and they employ a small local workforce of reliable and trustworthy people, so you won’t find your house teeming with strangers. John is hands-on and occasionally manages the more specialised projects from start to finish. From humble beginnings, starting with garden fencing and sheds, this small family enterprise has evolved into a comprehensive garden and landscaping service and, over the years, has expanded its skill base to include patios, timber decking, block paving and, more recently, artificial turf. They are confident that a simple garden makeover or a more extensive landscaping project (if your budget will stretch that far!) will make easy work of your outside space and may well add value to your property. They can also manufacture bespoke-sized sheds to make the most of the space you have and help with storage needs for the barbeque, kids’ toys and garden furniture that you are sure to be using regularly this summer. They pride themselves on exceeding the expectations of their customers and their main priorities are to

give the best value for money without cutting corners, always with a professional, friendly and flexible approach. They currently cover the Sheffield area but have worked as far afield as Penistone, Rotherham and Barnsley and have built up a loyal following of customers who regularly recommend them to family and friends. If your budget dictates you 'doing it yourself' or if you’re quite hands-on and enjoy a challenge, J K Fencing & Landscapes Ltd can supply the quality materials and give you honest advice on the best way to tackle your own project. Their fence panels and sheds are manufactured on site using tanalised timber and their concrete products are competitively priced. You can arrange for John to come out and visit your home to discuss what you want to achieve and maybe give you ideas for the space, and you can find examples of their work at www.jkfencing.co.uk if you need some inspiration of your own. There is no charge for the service and you will receive a written quote, which is valid for three months so you can take your time to decide and compare other quotes. If you do decide to choose J K Fencing & Landscapes Ltd to carry out your work, they will never ask you to pay a deposit and payment is only taken upon completion of the work to your satisfaction. Whatever you have in mind, John and his team are confident they can help you achieve an outdoor space you will love. Whether you need a cool space for entertaining, a safe area for the kids to play, extra storage, a low maintenance alternative, or if you just want to give your tired garden a much-needed face lift, why not give J K Fencing & Landscapes Ltd a call today and let your dream become a reality? PROMOTIONWESTBOURNE SCHOOL
Due to popularity and increasing demand from parents, Westbourne School has extended its pre-school facilities. very parent feels nervous about dropping their child off on their first day of school. However, these anxieties can be eased if children are introduced gently to the world of learning. And what better way to do this than at Westbourne Pre-School? Westbourne School – Sheffield’s only academically nonselective, co-educational, independent school for ages three to 16 – responded to demand from parents in 2013 by building a new pre-school facility on the site of the junior school. The pre-school has proved so popular that due to growing demand for places it has recently undergone an expansion and is celebrating its second birthday with the opening of a new extension. With places for 24 girls and boys aged three to four, the pre-school gives children a stimulating introduction to school life. Attendance is not restricted to those who go on to attend Westbourne School and childcare vouchers are accepted where applicable, along with the 15 hours LEA grant funding. Westbourne Pre-School was officially opened by Hollywood actor and Westbourne alumni Dominic West, who took his first acting lessons at the school. The pre-school is thoughtfully arranged into areas covering all aspects of the Early Years Foundation Stage. There are six qualified and experienced early years educators in the preschool and French, music, drama and PE are taught by existing Westbourne specialist teachers.
E
“It is the high quality of the teaching and learning that takes place along with the offer of specialist subjects that appeals to our parents,” says pre-school leader Mrs Rees-Oxley. “We tailor the phonics and numeracy lessons to meet each child’s abilities and we personalise each child’s learning journey – it is this differentiation that truly sets us apart.” Children are also given the opportunity to learn through first hand experiences, including excursions to the National Emergency Services Museum, and the Tropical Butterfly House, Wildlife and Falconry Centre. The first years of a child’s education are crucial to developing a happy, independent, sociable child with a lifelong love of learning. Westbourne Pre-School equips its students with the tools to succeed in all aspects of life and provides the perfect stepping stone to full-time education.
