PULSECONTENTS
EDITOR’S MESSAGE: n the age of TV talent shows, when singers, performers and even dancing dogs all clamber for their 15 minutes of fame, it’s easy to forget that there are some genuine stars who have lasted the distance. One singer who has weathered the storm since he first burst onto the scene in 2002 is the very first Pop Idol winner, Will Young. When I spoke to him ahead of his appearance at Doncaster Racecourse in May, I discovered that there is much more to the multi-talented popstar than meets the eye. Read the interview on page 46. At the other end of the musical spectrum, Bradfield Festival of Music will once again light up St Nicholas church when it comes to town at the end of June. With world-class singers and musicians, including some fabulous jazz artists, the week-long programme of concerts is not to be missed. Turn to page 10 for all the details. We’re also really excited to bring you news of the brand new £50million retail destination that is currently taking shape in Stocksbridge (page 7). Joanna Lumley will cut the ribbon on 16 June, officially declaring the great range of high street and independent retailers open for business. If you have a story to share, are hosting an event that you’d like us to publicise or have photographs of a recent celebration or event, we’d love to hear from you. PROMOTIONFOX VALLEY
Seasalt Cornwall – one of the new fashion stores opening at Fox Valley
RIGHT: Ponti's Italian Kitchen
The countdown is on to the launch of the £50m Fox Valley shopping centre in North Sheffield. orth Sheffield's newest retail destination is unveiled to the public in June and there's a special celebrity guest lined up to cut the ribbon on the £50 million project. Fox Valley will be officially opened by Joanna Lumley OBE on Thursday 16 June at 11am. The development brings a brand new and unique retail line up to this part of the city, with a fantastic range of high street names as well as high quality independent retailers. Fox Valley is anchored by the region's largest Aldi store, which will sit alongside a host of other retailers including Yorkshire's first stand-alone Seasalt fashion and homewares store and Full Gas Bikes - a brand new concept cycle store from the pro cyclist Tony Gibb. A new Next store for north Sheffield and a boutique department store – Sandersons – will open in the next phase of store openings in September. Restaurants and coffee shops at Fox Valley will include NYC Bar and Grill, Costa Coffee and Central Bean, which will be housed in the centre’s striking umbrella building. This pays tribute to the paragon umbrella frame, which was Joanna Lumley who will officially open Fox patented close to the site in the 1850s Valley on June 16th by the industrialist Samuel Fox. And in another first for the region, Ponti's Italian Kitchen is launching the company's first restaurant outside London at Fox Valley. The centre's restaurants have been set around a landscaped fountain area with a south facing aspect. The development is being delivered on a 28-acre former steelworks site and includes 60,000 sq ft of brand new high spec office space as well as a neighbouring housing site, which will bring 118 new homes to the area by the Yorkshire housing company Stonebridge Homes. Mark Dransfield, managing director of Dransfield Properties, developers of the Fox Valley scheme, said: “We have sought from the outset to create a unique and different retail destination here at Fox Valley and bringing a great retail mix is

a key part of that as well as looking at the architecture and the artwork around the project. "We also wanted to create something really different architecturally to this part of north Sheffield, which also reflects the area's rich industrial heritage. We hope our shoppers and visitors will be impressed when the centre opens on 16 June.”

MAESTRO CLASS
Ensemble Berlin, (main picture), Julian Lloyd Webber, John Lenehan and Emma Johnson
Some of the world’s best musicians are once again heading for Bradfield this summer. Stephanie Burns looks forward to the treats in store. t may not be the likeliest of locations for an internationally acclaimed music festival, but each summer Bradfield welcomes hundreds of visitors to the magical Grade I listed Parish Church of St Nicholas for a weeklong programme of world-class concerts. This year, from 25 June to 2 July, audiences will be treated to performances from the likes of Ensemble Berlin, Julian and Jiaxin Lloyd Webber and VOCES8. And it’s not just classical music. Along with pianist John Lenehan and percussionist Paul Carvis, Emma Johnson MBE will explore the role of the clarinet in jazz. “The aim of the festival is to continue bringing higher profile artists to Bradfield and that’s what we’ve achieved with this year’s programme,” said festival secretary Keith Hoyland. One extra special musician is former Sheffield school pupil SAC Philippa Hobbs of the Woodwind Ensemble of the Band of the RAF College, an ensemble that brings together the two established wind quintets which regularly perform around the country in support of the RAF. They play by permission of the Air Force Board of the Defence Council and their appearance at Bradfield is in aid of the RAF Music Charitable Trust. As a youngster, Philippa played the flute in

WHAT THE ARTISTS SAY Julian Lloyd Webber “I have always loved playing at Bradfield! Its unique and magical setting is a perfect and inspiring place to make music. I am looking forward to returning with my wife and fellow cellist Jiaxin and pianist Rebeca Omordia. Together we will be sharing a highly personal programme of beautiful music with one of our favourite audiences.” Emma Johnson MBE “St Nicholas Church perched up high overlooking the surrounding countryside is one of my favourite places to play in England.” John Lenehan “I always look forward to performing at the Bradfield festival. It's a wonderful, peaceful setting and the audience is as warm and welcoming as any I have encountered.”

The City of Sheffield Youth Orchestra and the Hallam Sinfonia. She is very much looking forward to performing in her local surroundings and is excited to be part of this year’s festival. Philippa is not the only one excited to be playing in Bradfield – just check out the testimonials (left) – but for most of the performers it’s a rather more unusual location than they’re used to. “Many of the artists have fantastic riders (conditions put forward by artists in order for them to play) but we’ve got limited facilities,” said Keith. “It’s pub toilets and Portaloos, no dedicated dressing rooms for males and females and no onsite provision for showers, so we have to make it up to them in other ways – the venue, the acoustics, and the hospitality we provide all encourage artists to come back again and again.” It’s the intimate setting – audiences of just 300 when many of the performers are used to playing to crowds of thousands – that provides another huge draw. They’re not stuck on a stage totally removed from their audience but instead surrounded by them. While the majority of ticket sales come from Yorkshire, Derbyshire, East Midlands and

Nottinghamshire, people travel from all over the country to attend the festival, and some even choose to spend a week’s holiday here. Each year, The Old Horns erect a marquee in the churchyard for interval drinks and Our Cow Molly ice creams and they put on pre-concert dinners so Above: attendees can grab a bite beforehand. Voces8 This year’s festival – set to be one of the most ambitious yet – comes hot off the heels of a very successful concert that was held in March. In memory of Keith’s late wife Heather, the event at Wisewood Methodist Church attracted an audience of 180. Around 150 of those stayed behind after the music to enjoy the complimentary refreshments – including ten fruit cakes Keith made himself. “We had a great night and it was a fitting tribute to Heather's memory,” said Keith. “I’m so grateful to everyone for supporting the concert and to all who helped in any way whatsoever. My friend Gerry Kersey, BBC Radio Sheffield presenter, did a great job as MC, too.” Once all expenses had been paid, Keith was delighted to donate £500 to the Cantamus Girls Choir, £400 to the Sheffield Music Hub, £200 to Wisewood Methodist Church and £230 to the Bradfield Festival of Music. With this donation, artists are already booked for the 2017 and 2018 festivals, and Keith is currently working on the 2019 programme. One of next year’s highlights is Johnny Dankworth and Cleo Laine’s daughter, jazz singer Jacqui Dankworth, who will perform with her husband, American keyboard player Below: The Charlie Wood. Woodwind Ensemble In the meantime, tickets are still available for this year so don’t of the Band miss your chance to witness these world-class artists while they’re of the RAF on our doorstep. PROMOTIONOLD RED LION
With great food, ales and events running throughout the year, it’s no surprise that the Old Red Lion draws a crowd every night of the week. arely a week goes by without news of another local pub closing down or changing hands. With ever-increasing beer tax and cheap supermarket deals, many local boozers have fallen prey to this modern curse. How refreshing, then, that Old Red Lion in Grenoside is bucking the trend by welcoming a great crowd every night of the week. Along with their many regulars from Grenoside and further afield, they’re joined by mountain bikers, dog walkers and hikers who’ve taken advantage of the Greno Woods trails. With its exposed stone walls, dark wooden tables, open fires and flagstone floors, the Old Red Lion is every bit the traditional rustic pub. Throw in excellent food, cask ales and a great selection of drinks, and it’s easy to see how they’ve built such a recipe for success. Bank Holidays are even more popular – and Monday 30 May will be no exception. There’ll be a disco and music quiz with cash prizes from 3pm and food will be served until 5pm. If the weather permits, a BBQ will be sizzling away outside and the kids can jump around to their heart’s content on the free bouncy castle. On the first Bank Holiday of the month – 1 May – the pub played host to a more unusual event. As well as the usual drinkers and diners, around 100 Morris dancers gathered at the pub on a tour of the area. After a buffet lunch and some great performances, they piled back on to their coaches and continued on to the next venue. It’s events such as these that put the Old Red Lion at the centre of the community.

The pub is owned by the Halsall family, who have several pubs in the region, including The Crown Inn at Totley, The Ash Inn and the Old Moor Tavern in Wombwell, The Lundhill Tavern in Hemingfield and The Cross Keys at Darfield. Head chef Paul Johnson, who has more than 30 years’ experience in the industry, joined the Halsalls three years ago and has worked at the Old Red Lion for two years. In that time, he has transformed Sunday lunch, which is served 12-6pm each week. “When I first started we were doing 60 or 70 meals on a Sunday – now it’s more like 240,” he said. “We’ve also got an extensive standard menu and weekly specials that are really popular. The steaks, pies and fish go down particularly well.” Whether it’s chilly outside and you’re after some shelter from the icy winds or the sun is shining on the outdoor terrace and you fancy a beer in the sun, Old Red Lion is the place to be. PROMOTIONBLACKS SOLICITORS
Aimee Hutchinson, solicitor at Blacks Solicitors LLP, discusses whether crowdfunding really is a potential model for financing legal procedures.
WORKING THE CROWD ack in March, protests, strikes and widespread publicity and social media campaigns took place following Jeremy Hunt’s proposed new contracts for junior doctors. The junior doctors then made the bold decision to take the Government to court. In order to raise the funds for judicial review, the doctors turned to Crowd Justice, a legal crowdfunding website dedicated to enabling would-be litigants to raise money for cases in the public interest. The NHS crowdfunding campaign hit its initial target of £25,000 within just 24 hours, and the junior doctors have (at the time of writing) raised over £97,000 from over 3,000 backers. This raises important legal questions on the subject of costs. Litigation is undoubtedly an incredibly expensive process; is crowdfunding really a potential model for financing legal proceedings? It is no secret that the legal system cannot keep up with the digital revolution and the development of companies that allow individuals or bodies to appeal for financial backing from the everyday man in the street is certainly attractive to potential claimants. Historically, funding someone else’s litigation so that the action could go to court, in exchange for a share of the potential proceeds, was a crime called champerty. Similarly, the law did not allow legal claims to be funded (or ‘maintained’) by a third party; this was on the basis that a third party may manufacture evidence or inflate claims in order for them personally to benefit. Even though the principles of maintenance and champerty are still in existence, with the erosion of legal aid, parliament and the courts are currently more receptive to third party funding arrangements. Ultimately, the rules against Aimee maintenance and champerty are Hutchinson to protect the purity of justice and

the public interest. Is the crowdfunding of this NHS campaign in the public interest and protecting the purity of justice? There are certainly those who think so. It is argued that the difference between champerty and what crowdfunding does is that the funders are donors rather than investors; the donors will not receive anything back from their donation. So what does this mean in terms of costs? If the doctors’ claim fails, could their backers be liable to pay the other side’s costs? The case of Arkin v Borchard Lines Ltd examined the costs liability of a third party funder. The Court of Appeal held that, in the circumstances of that case, liability should be limited to the extent of funding provided. However, it recognised that, although that case did not amount to champerty, other third party arrangements that did could be liable for the entire costs of the proceedings. So could the successful party go after over 3,000 backers in order to enforce a costs order? Probably not, as the backers don’t stand to benefit from the proceedings and practically it would be difficult and costly to do so. Further crowdfunding projects for legal disputes have arisen, including Action For Cabbies – Black Cabbies v TfL where over £345,000 of a £600,000 target has been pledged so far. We will have to wait and see if crowdfunding becomes the norm for litigation in the future, and how the courts deal with it if it does.

2016 is a big year for the Regional Magazine Company (RMC) as we launch our 30th anniversary celebrations - and we are looking for other businesses who have managed to stand the test of time to join in the fun. Our story started way back in 1986 when the first copy of our first magazine, Westside, was published. We’ve grown considerably since then into a company that publishes nine monthly lifestyle and business titles across Yorkshire, North Notts and North Derbyshire, as well as publishing books for some of Great Britain’s most prestigious restaurants. We also have a strong online presence and we’ll be celebrating our 30th with a major relaunch of our website. 1986 was the year Prince Andrew married Sarah Ferguson, Gary Lineker set a UK transfer record when he moved to Barcelona for £2.75million, Margaret Thatcher opened the M25 and the first episode of Casualty was aired. Since then, as anyone who has been in business the same length of time will know, there have been good times as well as upsets, recessions and major changes across the world. So, if you also set up your business in the year of 1986, congratulations on standing the test of time and here’s a birthday gift from RMC for you. We are offering a free advert in one of our titles. There’s no catch - it’s as simple as that. Contact: jillion.wood@regionalmagazine.co.uk to find out more.

PULSEIN BRIEF
Students help principal tackle charity challenge
Chapeltown Charity Spring Fair Local crafter and former owner of Marie’s Tea Room, Marie Boyle, and her twin sister Sarah Waddams hosted a charity event at the Scout Hut, Chapeltown, which raised £627.77 for Sheffield Helipad Appeal. Marie said: “The success was down to our community, who came together to support a good cause. We just wanted to say thank you to everyone who came to support us, our volunteers, and to businesses who donated prizes for the raffle. It was also nice to see our customers from the Tea Room. Haybrook Chapeltown also helped to support our event by printing, distributing leaflets and producing banners.” Marie and Sarah visited the helipad site to present the cheque and meet Duncan Batty, head of fundraising for Sheffield Hospitals Charity, as well as two trauma nurse coordinators, Mike Cole and Neil Strawbridge, from the Major Trauma Centre (MTC). The A&E department at the Northern General became an MTC in April 2013 and serves a population of 1.8 million people, which covers South Yorkshire, parts of the Humber, Derbyshire and East Midlands. “We saw the existing helipad, which is 20 years old, and the new one, which will be launched in the summer,” said Marie. “Currently patients are transferred from the helicopter into an ambulance then transported to the MTC. The new one is much closer to the department so there is no need for an ambulance. This not only saves time and but also allows the patient to receive specialist treatment quicker, which increases their chance of survival.” The cost of this helipad is approximately £2million and more funds are still needed. They are currently at 86 per cent of their target. Marie and Sarah are planning more events to raise money for the appeal and support Sheffield Hospitals Charity. As well as an autumn fair, they will host the spring fair next April. Their new website, www.twinsraiseforcharity.co.uk, will be launched soon. To donate to the Sheffield Helipad appeal, visit www.sheffieldhelipad.com.
Barnsley College sport students have given tips to principal Chris Webb as he prepares to tackle the Great North 10k and the Great North Run to raise funds for Cancer Research UK. Level 3 sport and exercise science students Natalie Butterfield, Matthew Pinder and Saffron Smith met with Chris to discuss his training programme ahead of the double challenge. The trio advised Chris on which exercises will get him into top shape, what to eat and drink and ways to stay motivated during his training regime. Chris has selected Cancer Research UK as his chosen charity as his mum beat breast cancer over 20 years ago but sadly he lost his dad, Bill, to stomach cancer last December and his older sister Janette to brain cancer 13 years ago. Chris said: “It was really useful to get advice from the students on key aspects of my training such as adjusting to running outside rather than on a treadmill, the best diet to follow and keeping motivated to train. “The students were very knowledgeable and gave me some excellent tips and information which I am going to implement into my training plan. I can’t imagine how hard it is for someone to battle cancer, so completing these challenges is the best way for me to support a charity which is so close to my heart.”

SUNDAY BEST Do you recognise these church school memories? his month’s picture is taken from Ecclesfield, Chapeltown and High Green from Old Photographs by Joan and Mel Jones. It shows the High Green Wesleyan Chapel Sunday school queen in the 1960s. The queen, Andrea Lynam, is joined by her attendant Jean Howe (nee Shaw). The cushion held by the small boy to Andrea’s right was used to rest the crown on before the investiture ceremony. Ecclesfield Parish Council Last month’s photograph featured Ecclesfield Parish councillors from 1975. It was kindly provided by the Ecclesfield Civil Parish Past and Present Archiving Project. David Pagett, who lives in Chapeltown, called in to tell us some names. David was a community policeman from 1974-83 and recognised a few of the people featured, including Larry Kingham (far right) and Graham Trickett (third from left), who were both special constables. He also identified Bill Beighton as the man shaking the hand of the chair Mrs Myers, Harry Hanwell on the far left, and the lady just in front of him as Carol Ansell, whose husband Howard was a local vicar. Diane Sorsby emailed to say she recognised the man in the back row, fifth from left. “This is my mum’s first cousin, Donald Hulbert. He died a few years ago but his son and grandchildren still live locally. He worked as a caretaker at Lound School for many years and was an RAF pilot in WWII, taking part in many raids over Germany. He lived in the Chapeltown and High Green area all of his life and was a true gentleman.”

PROMOTIONTANKERSLEY PARK GOLF CLUB
(L-R) Members Karen Elliott and Kerry Lamb with greens chair Cath Lake and marketing chair Debbie Travis
Don’t have time to play golf? Think again, and check out the superb facilities at Tankersley Park Golf Club. f your lasting impression of golf clubs is intimidating members dressed up to the nines and every round taking hours to complete, allow Tankersley Park Golf Club to change your mind entirely. Determined to keep up with the ever-changing times, the club has adopted a refreshing new approach that makes everyone feel welcome and able to take up the hobby. As marketing chair and member Debra Travis explains, this new way of thinking is in line with England Golf’s initiative to get more people into the sport. “The idea behind it is to open the sport up to more people. We all have busy lives and the thought of starting a new pastime that could take up to five hours to play has put many people off in the past. “Golf clubs realise that if they want to retain their members and, of course, attract the younger ones, they have to move with the times – gone are the stuffy rules of strict dress codes.” As well as a real push to recruit junior members, they have also introduced new nine-hole competitions. Taking half the usual time, these options open up the possibility of playing golf to many people who have previously felt unable to take part due to their other professional or social commitments. With this evolution has come another first for the club – a female greens chairperson. Cath Lake, the lady who organised

the 72-hole Macmillan golf challenge featured in Pulse last July, is delighted to take up this position. And these aren’t the only changes at the club. Work on the new driving range, which is being supported by a Lottery Grant from Sport England, will commence soon. This new practise facility will be open to all – including the general public – and will be a welcome addition to the area for all budding golfers. The land where the club resides has a fascinating past and has had many uses over the last few centuries. It was an oak forest, a civil war battlefield, a baronial deer park, a coal and ironstone mining area and even a battle tank testing ground before being transformed into a beautifully manicured golf course. The course was designed in 1907 by Martin Hawtree, one of the most famous golf course architects in history. Martin and his company worked on courses all over the world including Royal Birkdale and Sunningdale. More recently, his company has been working with Donald Trump on his new courses, including Trump International. PROMOTIONFENWOOD ESTATES Earls Paddock Grenoside Point
With more of their quality eco-friendly homes due for completion, Fenwood Estates are looking forward to an exciting year ahead. any Pulse readers will be familiar with Fenwood Estates. Having built Grenoside Point, a select development of six eco-friendly four-bedroom homes just off Yew Lane in 2014, this local development company has already established a reputation in S35 for building quality, environmentally conscious homes. Those who are looking to move in 2016 will no doubt be pleased to hear, then, that Fenwood has even more exciting projects in the pipeline this year. Due for completion in May is Earls Paddock, an exclusive development of just two executive-style, five-bedroom homes in generous plots in the very sought after village of Thorpe Hesley. Built to a high standard, the homes’ specifications include fully fitted kitchens with appliances, floor coverings throughout, generous sockets, TV points to all rooms and fully landscaped gardens – to name just a few. Reservations are now being taken, with prices starting from £475,000. Head East to Kilnhurst later in the year and you’ll find another Fenwood project in the making. Sanctum, for which the price and specification will be released in the spring, will offer a mix of two, three and four-bedroom houses and apartments. Available under the Help to Buy scheme – as all of Fenwood’s developments in 2016 are – they will make ideal starter and family homes. Fenwood Estates is a long-established, family-run company that takes great pride in the standard of their builds and the attention to detail in their specifications. Graham Fennell and daughter Melissa Kroger are both passionate about their
M
business and strive to provide high quality, eco-friendly and cost-effective new homes for the residents of South Yorkshire. Graham began his working life as a carpenter and has now been in the construction industry for more than 40 years. Although the industry has been turbulent over the years, he has enjoyed growing and expanding to form the successful company that Fenwood Estates is today. Melissa joined the company over 15 years ago as a junior surveyor and is now managing director. Together they have won several awards with the Local Authority Building Control (LABC) warranty provider, including Best Housing Development and Best Sustainable Development, as well as the Doncaster Free Press Design and Build Award. “We are proud of what we have achieved so far and are very excited about the developments we have planned for the year ahead,” said Melissa. “We’re really looking forward to creating more homes for people to build their lives in.” For more information, contact the team on 01302 249550 or visit www.fenwood.com. EDUCATIONKIP McGRATH
SATs are over! Let summer begin… but beware! ATs are over. For Year 6 children at least, the pressure is off – for now. But their education journey is entering a critical stage, at the end of which will be public exams leading to their first qualifications at the age of 16. Over the years, Keystage 2 SATs have taken on an importance, leading to much stress for children and their teachers. SATs are really about holding the schools to account for the progress their pupils make and the standards they reach. They do not affect the choice of school, unlike the old 11+, so why do the children taking them get so stressed? Keystage 2 SATs are the first formal tests primary children will have encountered. Yes, SATs are being brought back into Keystage 1 (the end of the infant years), but their assessments are delivered more informally. For 11 year olds, they will enter an exam room, be seated in rows and will have their assessments taken under exam conditions. I am sure we all remember that feeling. For most of us, even if very bright, it will have been stressful. Then there has been the preparation: months of past papers and schools days full of teaching to the test. Those not quite up to the grade may have been withdrawn from class for SATs boosters. These may improve their final marks, but the disadvantage is that they are likely to take place during more
S
www.regionalmagazine.co.uk
enjoyable aspects of the curriculum. Some children may even have had booster lessons before and after school. All will have had increasing amounts of homework. Now SATs are over, children and teachers alike will have little left in the tank and, quite likely, not much appetite for the staples of maths, reading and writing. It is a very uneven learning journey but children should not take their eye off the ball as their path through school still has a long way to go. Most high schools will test their new Year 7 intake some time after starting. Secondary education marks the beginning of a new and very important phase with GCSEs and other real qualifications at the end of it. I hope our primary school leavers enjoy the summer. Relax and recharge. You have earned it. PULSEINTERVIEW
WHERE THERE’S A WILL Ahead of his performance at Doncaster Racecourse this month, Stephanie Burns speaks to multi-talented Pop Idol Will Young. logger, documentary presenter, LGBT activist, animal rights supporter, and – oh yeah – pop star-cum-actor, you’re as likely to read about Will Young’s various campaigns in the news as you are to see him performing on stage or screen these days. I was one of the 12 million rapt viewers who watched Will rocket to fame as the very first Pop Idol in 2002 – all baggy jeans and raw talent, he captured the nation’s heart in an instant. But from his first ‘cheesy’ (Dr Fox’s words, not mine) rendition of ‘Blame It on the Boogie’ at his audition aged 22, he’s come a long way. And as we chatted on the phone ahead of his performance at Doncaster Racecourse in May, I discovered that there are many more sides to the 37-year-old than I’d really expected to find. For one, he takes his job seriously. “At the end of the day, the most important thing [in my work] is that it’s for the audience,” he says, noisily making a cup of coffee at his friend’s house in London in the background. “I’m like a servant. It’s like being the waiter in a restaurant, I’m just the deliverer of this stuff. I get a lot of pleasure out of that because that’s my job on stage, to make the night run as smoothly as it can, and that’s a really fulfilling job.” It’s the carte blanche to do whatever he likes with his tours and live performances – changing the look of them, the arrangement of the music, the lighting – that he loves most about this aspect of his work. “Any great art always has quite an important grounding message,” he says, “but that doesn’t mean that it’s really serious. I let my imagination run riot and it’s really fun. If you want to come along to a show and have a laugh and enjoy some confetti, then that’s what we’ve got. Or if you want to write a thesis on the show, then you can probably do that as well.” An academic analysis of a pop show… now there’s an idea. He’s not entirely joking. Will’s a deep thinker – he studied politics at the University of Exeter – and, in the last few years, has had good reason to delve into the way the mind works. On the verge of breakdown, he removed himself from the spotlight and took the time he needed to heal. His journey back from the brink is something he’s spoken about openly, but this frankness doesn’t stem from a mission to educate the world on mental wellbeing. “As long as I feel that it’s appropriate and safe for me to do so, then I’m happy to share anything that I’m comfortable sharing,” he
B
46 PULSE MAGAZINE
says. “I’ve been privileged enough to have had a lot of very good help and I’m quite enlightened so I will talk about these kind of things. But it’s not for me to force other people to talk about that kind of stuff.” His sixth studio album 85% Proof – which Clash described as ‘a masterclass in delivering a mature pop record’ – took just ten days to write and debuted at number one in the UK Albums Chart when it was released last year. It’s a mixture of upbeat pop and soulful melodies that reflect the difficulties he faced in this dark period and the light that he eventually found at the end of the tunnel. While mental wellbeing in the broader sense isn’t on his mission agenda, young LGBT people’s mental health certainly is. He has blasted Education Secretary Nicky Morgan, saying she’s reluctant to tackle homophobic bullying in schools and is ‘dead behind the eyes’. Ouch. “I get really hot under the collar about [the lack of support for young LGBT people],” he says. “And rightfully so because very little is done and I think we all rest on our laurels. There is no real huge push and I think there has to be. So I’m kind of like the guy who just shouts and screams and gets a bit petulant and I’m quite happy to do that.” He’s quietened a little since his Morgan bashing and is currently collating information, finding out what action teachers, young LGBT charities, parents and the children themselves want taken. We absolutely haven’t heard the end of this argument and it’s clear that Will won’t rest until he gets the change he’s fighting for. In the meantime, he’s continuing to write blogs, film documentaries, promote his work with WWF, take on acting jobs, and – of course – focus on his music. Is there anything left for him to try his hand at? “There’s nothing that I’m dying to do,” he explains. “Two years ago I had this whole list of things and now everything’s like a bonus. It’s a bit like I’m on a boat and I let the current take me to wherever it takes me. “The fear of losing something can actually stop someone enjoying it but I’m very pleased with what I’ve done and it allows me to really enjoy it all, because I’m not scared of it going away. But I would never have imagined that I could have incorporated all of these different parts of me into one job – never in my wildest dreams.”

PULSEMOTORING
Nissan turns up the drama on the GT-R The current-gen Nissan GT-R has been with us now since 2007, and every year since the Japanese company has tickled its underbelly and internal workings – an extra dollop of power here, a suspension tweak there. You get the idea. Now Nissan has really gone to town with the MY17 edition and the changes are the most dramatic yet. In essence, the car’s looks have been changed giving it a more aggressive stance on the road with better aerodynamic properties. There’s a more luxurious new interior with fewer buttons and better sound deadening. The suspension has been changed to give better handling and improve ride quality. Power has also been raised to 562hp. The order books opened this month with first deliveries this autumn.
Jordan Cutforth rounds up the latest from the world of motoring. Feel the noise The latest generation of the Audi R8 is a welcome relief. Instead of following the rest of the industry by downsizing and turbo-charging their engines, the R8 has stuck to its guns and kept to a naturally-aspirated formula. Not only are these engines more responsive compared to their turbo-charged counterparts, but they’re considerably louder too. As you would expect, the R8 Coupe is a fantastically aurally stimulating machine but this can only get better because now the Spyder version is coming along. Available to order from later in the spring with deliveries at the end of the year, the new R8 Spyder will come with a 532hp 5.2-litre V10 powerhouse mated to an S-Tronic dual-clutch gearbox. As with the Coupe, there’s no manual available.
Diesel joins the Club With the launch of the latest Mini Clubman back in October of last year, it was only a matter of time before the most fuelefficient diesel variant was placed under the bonnet. It’s called the One D Clubman and it’ll be powered by a 1.5-litre three-cylinder diesel producing 116hp, which can get the Clubman from 0-62mph in 10.4 seconds. Not bad for a car which in manual trim emits less than 100g/km of CO2 and manages 74.3mpg on the combined cycle. Automatic is slightly less frugal. High standard equipment levels which includes the likes of Mini Navigation, DAB, Bluetooth, Cruise control, MINI Connected and MINI Excitement Pack, 16inch alloy wheels, sports leather steering wheel and automatic lights and wipers. Available now. Priced from £21,375.
Reach for the sky Want your German super-coupe to be a little more… draughty? Well we have good news for you; the C63 is going topless. It’s the C63 AMG Cabriolet and it’s an electricallyoperated multi-layered fabric job which can be lowered or raised at speeds of up to 31mph. As it’ll be based on the C63 AMG coupe, it’ll come with the same 4.0-litre bi-turbo V8 motor producing either 469hp or 503hp in C63 S guise, and it’ll come with all the same equipment options. It literally is a C63 with the roof chopped off. It’ll weigh more than the regular car, and certainly cost more too. But will you really care when there are millions of miles of blue sky at your disposal? The C63 Cabriolet will be launched in August.
