GARDENING
HOW DOES YOUR GARDEN GROW? CHATSWORTH HEAD GARDENER STEVE PORTER REVEALS HIS PASSION FOR PLANTS AND HOW YOU CAN ENSURE YOUR PLOT LOOKS ITS BEST THIS SUMMER. ou might not feel like spending hours outdoors at the moment, but in order to have a healthy and thriving garden this summer, preparations should start now – come rain or shine. Here we meet with Chatsworth’s head gardener, Steve Porter, to discuss getting started in the gardening industry, inspiration and top tips and tricks for a stunning, colourful garden.
Y
How and when did you get started in the gardening industry?
Following a basic horticultural course near to home, I was very fortunate to land a place on the three-year National Trust Careership, based at Ickworth in Suffolk. It was a fantastic allround introduction to working in historic gardens. I then went on and worked with the National Trust for 15 years, becoming their youngest head gardener in 2000. What attracted you to the gardening business?
I spent my early years growing up on a farm, and helping out with my grandad’s market garden, so it always seemed the right route to take. I particularly enjoy watching a plant, area or garden develop and grow. I’m very much driven by raising gardening standards and providing enjoyment for visitors. What has been your career highlight?
Becoming Head Gardener in 2000 was great but taking over the garden and park at 8 Pulse | www.pulsemag.co.uk
Chatsworth was amazing. I'm following in the footsteps of some amazing people, particularly Sir Joseph Paxton which is a great honour. What are your top gardening tips?
Getting off to a good start is important. Don't rush, prepare the ground and ensure all perennials and weeds are dealt with. You need to understand the soil - is it fertile enough or too rich, does drainage need improving or should you build irrigation? These considerations will all save hours later and minimise losses or frustration later. What are the main gardening jobs for June, July and August?
Steves’ summer to do list for beginners * Start with good hygiene – clearing weeds and summer leaf litter can help reduce disease. * Regular dead-heading will extend your flowering season, feeding as soon as temperatures lift in the spring will help promote growth, flowering or fruiting depending on the type you use and watering when necessary is essential. To keep up to date on the latest RHS Flower Show news visit www.rhs.org.uk
@PulseRMC
During these months a lot of time is devoted to regular maintenance such as weeding and dead-heading, however it's also a time to enjoy the garden and plan improvements. Look at borders to see what works as well as what doesn't. Where are there gaps? Where could you add bulbs? It’s well worth making notes or putting in labels so you remember what you’re looking at when it comes to splitting or planting time. What’s the best way to provide the right soil for your plants to thrive?
Understanding your garden, the soil and frost pockets is important and knowing what the plants require. Matching these together will make your life easier and your garden better. You can easily improve certain areas, such as adding organic matter to increase fertility and open up the structure, however changing the soil’s acidity to grow rhododendrons for example is much harder, slower and only worth considering if you are very keen and committed. What’s the best way to identify common pests?
Attacks, from rabbits, squirrels or even deer, are obvious as they chew stems, leaves and branches. Other things can be more difficult to identify and my best advice is to turn to a key in a pest and disease book or try searching online for the effects and how to deal with them.

BUMFORDS’ TOP TIPS Each month, Neil Bumford MD of Bumford Heating, tells us one of his top tips to keep our homes warm and energy efficient throughout the colder months. Spend less time in the shower - Tempting as it is to stand in a nice warm shower, spending one minute less in the shower each day will save up to £7 off your energy bills each year per person. BACK IN BLOOM THIS YEAR’S RHS CHATSWORTH FLOWER SHOW PROMISES TO BE A RIOT OF COLOUR AND EXOTIC BLOOMS. RACHEL MARTIN PREVIEWS WHAT’S IN STORE
Visitors will be able to try out an immersive 3D virtual reality experience
et in the magnificent 1,000-acre Chatsworth Estate, the RHS Chatsworth Flower Show, partnered by Wedgwood will return from 6 - 10 June with exciting new content, including a river of 12,000 Cosmos and more than 100 varieties of orchid. During Joseph Paxton’s time as head gardener the Chatsworth Estate boasted one of the most extensive orchid collections in the UK, and at this year’s show celebrity floral designer, Jonathan Moseley will join forces with Double H Nurseries to bring one of the UK’s largest orchid displays back to the estate. Housed within a bespoke representation of Joseph Paxton’s Great Conservatory, the display will feature over 100 varieties of the popular Phalaenopsis Orchid, creating an immersive floral extravaganza. The exotic blooms, in a sumptuous palette of lilacs, whites, purple, pale and cerise pink will adorn a central waterfall, and suspended from the ceiling will be a riot of sculptural branches, with large chandeliers dripping with mosses and tropical bromeliads from which will hang a further explosion of vibrant orchids. A Virtual Reality experience created by 3D expert and VR designer, Simon Mabey alongside Manchester Museum and Manchester University will immerse visitors further in the tropical display as they sit suspended amongst the flowers, experiencing the wonder of different orchids through the eyes of an insect. MosEley will also be at all the RHS shows with his British Flower Bus, where spectators can climb on board, see gorgeous British blooms and join him for demonstrations and free arrangement workshops using local grown flowers.
S
And for the first time at an RHS Show, a mass planting of over 12,000 Cosmos will create a striking vision of pink in front of the iconic Chatsworth House, for visitors to walk amongst and enjoy the sweet scent and beauty of this elegant summer flower. The important role plants play within cities will also be explored in the new Living Laboratory, showcasing some of the great ways plants can help both now and in the future as urban living intensifies. Plants and technology will be on display highlighting how different varieties can help address a number of urban challenges including pollution, flooding and food scarcity. Other show highlights include show gardens inspired by local landscapes, including The Great Outdoors Garden by Sheffield based designer Phil Hirst and a celebration of Hay Time in Yorkshire by Chris Myers. Continuing the agricultural theme, The John Deere Garden by Elspeth Stockwell and Jo Fairfax takes inspiration from farm buildings, ploughed wheat fields and natural woodland borders and will feature a circular sculpture of 100 tractors, celebrating the company’s centenary year of tractors. The history of Chatsworth House provides inspiration for some of the new innovative installations at this year’s show, and show partner, Wedgwood are working
with Chatsworth’s head of gardens and landscape Steve Porter and craftsman Carl Hardman of Landmark Walling to celebrate the ancient heritage craft of dry stone walling, an important feature in the British landscape. A ‘lost’ village that once stood in the shadow of Chatsworth House before being removed to make way for Capability Brown’s famous landscape is the inspiration behind Brewin Dolphin’s installation designed by multi award winning designer, Paul Hervey-Brookes. Liz Patterson, RHS Chatsworth Flower Show manager says: “We’ve been going all out in the Chatsworth team preparing some fabulous new experiences for the 2018 show. “On top of the exciting new content, the floral marquees will be bursting with top growers and nurseries and we have a fantastic line up of experts in the garden and artisan kitchen theatres hosting Q&A sessions, talks and demos throughout the week. “Visitors will also be able to get creative in the artisan craft area and we will see the return of the popular well dressing competition, plus lots more.”

WALK THIS WAY IT’S OFFICIAL – STOCKSBRIDGE IS A RAMBLER’S PARADISE. PHOEBE SEYMOUR FINDS OUT WHY.
f you ask the average person where the best walks in Sheffield are, they will more than likely point to the Peak District to the south of the city. Yet to those living in north Sheffield, Stocksbridge and the surrounding areas have some of the most underrated walks in the UK. But now, the secret is finally out… Stocksbridge was recently named runner-up of The Ramblers’ Britain’s Best Walking Neighbourhood Award 2018 – missing out to winner Hastings by a whisker. The town was the only place in Yorkshire to be nominated and the publicity has put their walking trails firmly on the map – quite literally. Dave Pickergill is the secretary for Stocksbridge Walkers Are Welcome, a local group that encourages locals and visitors to walk in the area, by creating helpful instructions and maps for a variety of walking routes. “The basic idea is that we are a local town that has set itself up to be welcome to walkers,” explains Dave. “We are one of 150 Walkers Are Welcome groups across the country so are part of a bigger network. “Over the years, we’ve developed fairly detailed instructions for walks in the local area and put them on the website. We deliberately went for downloadable PDFs because walks change. “When we started, Fox Valley was a sort of desolation land and a

‘Ewden Valley is really nice. One could describe it as the Switzerland of Yorkshire! It’s got the trees, the water – not quite mountains – but hills.’ couple of walks went through it. It’s totally changed so we’ve had to tweak those walks. Then, when Fox Valley opened, we nipped down and rewrote them. So it’s pretty up to date.” When Stocksbridge Walkers Are Welcome started in 2011, the team had created a dozen walks. This quickly extended and now the group has 42 routes suitable for everyone from casual walkers, to regular walkers looking for a challenge. The routes are split into less than five miles, five to 10 – which take between two and three hours and are most people’s favourite – and over 10 miles. “We’ve covered most of the paths in Stocksbridge now and expanded our walks to Yorkshire Sculpture Park and there’s one in Wentworth in development.” What started out as a helpful website for locals, has rocketed in popularity. In its first year, the site had 100 visitors. Last year, it had just over 24,000 hits – not bad for a town that doesn’t consider itself a holiday destination. The success of Stocksbridge Walkers Are Welcome would not have been possible without the sponsorship of local businesses, the support of Stockbridge Council and Fox Valley, as well Pictures: Dave Pickersgill as events such as Tour De France, which drew hundreds of people to the finishing line at Fox Valley and gave the group an opportunity to do some flyering. Though Stocksbridge came second, their nomination for The Ramblers award has attracted plenty of attention from the media. Look North reporter, Tom Ingle recently came to meet Dave to find out what all the fuss was about, while a reporter from BBC Radio Sheffield saw Bolsterstone on a snowy day and called it “Narnia”. It also helps having a walking group to test the routes. Dave is a member of a U3A (The University of the Third Age) walking group, which his wife Mary has also convened for a number of years. U3A is
a company that encourages lifelong learning and taking part in various activities. There are at least 30 walking groups associated with U3A in Sheffield, and the North West group meets in the area every Thursday morning – the perfect chance to try out one of the new routes. And though Dave has been living in Stocksbridge for 30 years, he continues to be amazed by the beauty of his home town. “Ewden Valley is really nice. One could describe it as the Switzerland of Yorkshire! It’s got the trees, the water – not quite mountains – but hills. You can start at Deepcar, go through Tin Mill to Green Moor, down to the River Don to Huthwaite Tunnel, then back on the trail – that’s a nice six miles. The first 100 yards are industrial land, but as soon as you turn right after the railway bridge, you’re in the countryside.” But this contrast of industrial and natural landscapes is what makes Stocksbridge such a unique and interesting place to walk. “It’s really good,” agrees Dave. “You’ve got your urban bits, but you’ve also got a number of reasonably designed paths. “You can be in Sandersons in Fox Valley, then 10 minutes later, you’re half way up the hill and you can see the Peak District, then 20 minutes later you’re at Langsett. You’ve got your variation and you get your views because Stocksbridge is in the valley.” Finally, I ask Dave why he thinks promoting walking in Stocksbridge is so important. “Why I think it is important walking anywhere. It’s healthy because you’re out and about, it gives you things to do, it can be different everyday and it helps your wellbeing. “When you’re in a walking group, you’re seeing people on a regular basis, having conversations and sorting out each other’s problems. Simply put - it’s good for you.” Stocksbridge Walkers Are Welcome will be leading walks for the East Peak Outdoors walking festival (www.epip.org.uk/leader-20152019/east-peak-outdoors-2018.php) on 23 June and the Sheffield Walking Festival on 9 September (www.theoutdoorcity.co.uk/walkingfestival). FOCUS
Vibrant community FROM AN INDUSTRIAL PAST TO A TOURIST DESTINATION, STOCKSBRIDGE COMBINES THE BEST OF EVERYTHING.
tocksbridge is a town of two halves. At its heart is a strong industrial heritage, whilst its arms stretch out beyond Bolsterstone, Ewden Valley and Langsett, to reveal some of the most glorious countryside trails in the UK. Of course, much has changed in Stocksbridge over the past few years. Up until recently, most visited the area for its scenic walks or simply treated it as a thoroughfare connecting Sheffield and Manchester. Stocksbridge’s biggest claim to fame is its steel industry. It all started when Samuel Fox acquired the old cotton mill in 1842, before purchasing it in 1851 and converting it into a wire mill. He built much of the infrastructure of Stocksbridge, primarily to house his new workforce and supply their needs. The wire was originally for textile pins, but around 1848 the business expanded to include wire for umbrella frames, which led

to Fox developing his famous Paragon umbrella frame in 1851. The steel industry continued to flourish throughout the 1900s, and the steel factories continued to change hands and company names throughout the decades and a steel works remains in the area to this day. But since the opening of Fox Valley shopping centre in 2016, Stocksbridge has shown a different side of itself and become a retail destination in its own right. High-end restaurants and department stores blend with well-known high street names to offer a varied and unique shopping experience. When the Tour de Yorkshire came through Stocksbridge and finished at Fox Valley the following year in 2017, this solidified the town’s status as a tourist destination, marking a new era for the town. On the following pages, we celebrate some of the businesses and services that are contributing to this vibrant community today.

STOCKSBRIDGE HAS A LONG AND FASCINATING INDUSTRIAL AND RURAL HISTORY, WRITES PHOEBE SEYMOUR. CHECK OUT THESE SNAPSHOTS OF THE PAST. his month’s Pulse is a Stocksbridge special, so we take a trip back in time to catch a glimpse of this area’s industrial and rural past. Taken from The Archive Photographs Series: Around Stocksbridge The Second Selection compiled by Stocksbridge and District History Society, we start by taking a look down Pearson Street, where many workers were housed in the late 19th century. The accompanying caption says: “The number of households at Horner House in 1851 was only seven had risen to 63 by the time of the 1881 census. Many of the additional families came from Bradwell in Derbyshire, the home of Samuel Fox. These houses were valued at £100 in 1869. “The photograph dates either from the 1904 celebration of the founding of the local branch of the Salvation Army or from the 1919 peace celebrations. The building on the
T
42 Pulse | www.pulsemag.co.uk
left was used as a branch of the West Riding public library until the 1940s.” Making our way up the valley and away from the heart of Stocksbridge, we reach Langley Brook Farm. “This farm dates back for many years, records show that in 1661 a tenant by the name of John Cauldwell died here. In 1702 the occupant was Jonathan Hadfield who was Deputy Constable of Bardfield. Generations of the Crawshaw family inhabited the farm between 1841 and 1881. “A public right of way to Midhope runs through the farmyard. Apparently Langley Brook ceased to be a working farm following an outbreak of foot and mouth disease in the mid-1930s.” This spot is still a fantastic place to walk along and stop at to get a great view of the Stocksbridge Works in the valley and the rolling hills behind it. @PulseRMC
Our final photo is of another farm, but this one is a little more difficult to get to these days. “Damstakes Farm, once the home of the Barden family, was the next property on the journey to Hidhope. The site of the farm now lies under the waters of Underbank Resevoir!” If you have any more information about the buildings in these photos and the people who lived and worked in them, get in touch with Pulse on the following details. If you have any old pictures that you would like to share, please send them, along with your name and a short description, to Phoebe Seymour, Pulse Looking Back, 6 Broadfield Court, Broadfield Business Park, Sheffield S8 0XF or email them to phoebe.seymour@rmcmedia.co.uk. SHEFFIELD MOTOR SHOW
Photographs: Roger Hart
THE SHEFFIELD MOTOR SHOW IS BACK WITH A NEW HOME, NEW ATTRACTIONS AND NEW CARS.
THE MOOR THE MERRIER! very year the Sheffield Motor Show gives local dealers from across the city a platform to showcase the latest models from a myriad of manufacturers, and this year is no different. However, due to uncertainties surrounding city centre developments, the annual event, which started in 2013 and has been held in Sheffield City Centre for the last four years, will move to The Moor, courtesy of Aberdeen Standard Asset Management. This year, the show will transform The Moor into a vehicle extravaganza from 9am to 4:30pm on 16 June, and 46 new cars will be exhibited. The show is a rare opportunity for anyone in search of a new car to view the latest models in one place. Dealers and manufacturers already on the list include: Lookers (Ford), Robins & Day (Peugeot), Bickerton Motors (Skoda), Stoneacre (Honda, Hyundai and Volvo), Europa (Mitsubishi and Subaru), Burrows (Toyota and Mazda) and JCT 600 (VW). After checking out the huge range of car displays, you can be forgiven for needing a breather, and a tantalising array of food and drink and family entertainment will be on offer from a selection of outdoor market vendors and inside the Moor Market.
E
And providing the soundtrack for the weekend will be students from The Sheffield Music Hub, who will be showcasing genres for all tastes from 12.30 to 3.50pm. “It’s always an exciting time of year when The Sheffield Motor Show arrives,” says joint organiser Roger Hart, of the Sheffield Vulcan Rotary Club. “Last year, we took over Sheffield city centre for two glorious days, and the crowds flocked to see the cars. But this year, with a new location courtesy of Aberdeen Standard Asset Management, we promise more interaction and more entertainment. We can't wait.” Last year proved to be a huge success and funds raised from the show were divided between charities including Grimm & Co, a thriving apothecary located in the heart of Rotherham which runs innovative storytelling and writing workshops for young people; St. Luke’s Hospice, Whirlow Hall Farm Trust; Fable (For A Better Life with Epilepsy), which helps fund Vagus Nerve Stimulation Therapy for children and adults; Edale Mountain Rescue; Neurocare, which raised money for a ROSA Robot for the Royal Hallamshire Hospital to carry out brain surgery, and Rotary Charities. Sheffield Vulcan Rotary Club meets on a Tuesday evening at Abbeydale Sports Club, and this year’s funds will be split between a number of worthy local causes.

DREAM COME TRUE Wouldn’t it be a dream come true if a supercar was converted into a fourdoor family saloon? Well thanks to Mercedes-AMG, this dream has come true. Called the Mercedes-AMG GT Four-Door Coupe, as the name suggests, it’s marketed as the fourdoor version of the big flagship AMG-GT sports car. Design cues such as the front grille, headlights and thin rear tail lights indicate the similarities between it and the flagship supercar. There will be three variants: AMG GT 63 S (639hp), AMG GT 63 (585hp) and AMG GT 53 (435hp). The 63 S and 63 will come with the same 4.0-litre bi-turbo engine as found in the AMG GT supercar while the 53 S variant will come with a 3.0-litre six-cylinder hybrid motor.
A SUPERCAR FOR THE WHOLE FAMILY? JORDAN CUTFORTH LOOKS AT NEW ARRIVALS WITH THE WOW FACTOR.
New Collezione Ever since the Fiat 500 was re-launched back in 2007, it’s always been the more fashionable and quirky alternative to the rest of the city car alternatives. Now a new special edition of the Fiat 500 has been launched, it’s called the Collezione and it’ll make you ever more fashionable. Available in hatch and convertible forms, it features a modern reworking of its great forerunner’s unmistakable design signatures, with chrome trim on the front bumper, bonnet and mirror caps and exclusive 16-inch alloy wheels as standard. There are unique two-tone colour liveries to choose from and the interior will be bathes with the same colours as the exterior. Available with a 69hp 1.2-litre petrol engine with a five-speed manual or Dualogic transmission. Priced from £13,865.
A big deal Say hello to the brand-new version of the world’s most popular zero-emission vehicle – the Nissan Leaf. Electric vehicles are most definitely the future of the motoring landscape, so the release of the Nissan Leaf is most certainly a big deal. It has a completely redesigned interior which focuses on the driver and combines a clever use of space with optimum functionality. A 435-litre boot and foldable 60/40 split rear seats offers impressive storage options and maximum utility. A maximum luggage capacity of 1,176-litres is achievable with seats folded. The electric motor delivers a range of 168 miles on the combined cycle or up to 258 miles in city driving. Power is 150hp and 230Nm of torque. 100 per cent charge from alert (near empty) takes 7.5 hours.
WILD RIDE Everybody loves a Ford Mustang and since the Mustang has been available in righthand-drive configuration, us Brits have been able to taste much more of that fantastic slice of American pie. Now though, the Mustang has been updated: sleeker styling, enhanced engines, sharper driving dynamics and advanced driver assistance technologies. More athletic styling is underscored by crisp, clear LED lighting, bold new exterior colours and alloy wheel options. Upscale interior offers soft-touch materials and aluminium finishes. Powered by an updated 444hp 5.0-litre V8, it revs higher than the old unit and is mated to either a ten-speed auto gearbox or six-speed manual with rev-matching capabilities. Also available with a 2.3-litre EcoBoost four-pot motor, generating 286hp straight to the rear-wheels. @PulseRMC
