IN BRIEF

Community Hall is transformed with a whole new look Members of Oughtibridge Chapel and local contractors have spent the summer refurbishing the lower hall on Church Street into a modern, vibrant facility for use by the village community. The building is over 160 years old and forms a familiar sight for those walking or driving from the centre of the village to Oughtibridge School. Works have included raising and laying a complete new floor and remodelling the entrance hall to give easy access throughout the lower level of the building, even for wheel chair users. The existing outer door has been moved, a bespoke staircase linking the main chapel installed, together with new heating and an impressive flexible lighting system. As well as employing local contractors, much of the work has been carried out by members and friends of the chapel, who have been committed to completing the project for the autumn term. Members of the chapel also provided most of funding, with additional grants from Sheffield City Council and Oughtibridge Gala. The hall provides a venue for a mother and toddlers group, a men’s ‘Forum’, Brownies, Rainbows, and various other dance and fitness classes - not forgetting children's parties. The official opening a few weeks ago saw the hall packed with well-wishers and villagers eager to see the new hall and enjoy coffee and vast amounts of homemade cake.

Marie Curie on the lookout for volunteers Do you live in the S35 area and would you like to be part of a fantastic group of volunteers fundraising and helping more people across Sheffield and South Yorkshire with a terminal illness get the care and support they deserve? Marie Curie is on the lookout for members for the new North Sheffield Fundraising Group and would love to hear from you. Local community fundraiser Rebecca Bramley said: “We know there are people living in the local communities who could give a few hours up every month to join other volunteers in fundraising for Marie Curie, and I would love to find them! “With full support from me, they could join a brand new friendly Fundraising Group that would meet every four to six weeks, and help with any ideas to raise the vital funds needed for Marie Curie’s services. As well as general members, we are also looking for people to fill the chair, secretary and treasurer roles.” To find out more, call Rebecca on 07525 392984, 01274 386190 or email rebecca.bramley@mariecurie.org.uk. 8 Pulse | www.sheffieldvibe.com

QUALITY INGREDIENTS ARE THE SECRET OF SUCCESS FOR JOHN CRAWSHAW.

Simply the best he foundations of John Crawshaw’s business are firmly seated in the communities of North Sheffield. He has taken a business founded by his father over 60 years ago, and built it into what we see now on our streets and more. John knows that the recipe for a great meal starts with the best ingredients. That’s why he is passionate about the quality of everything sold in his shops. He personally selects the beef, pork and lamb from their ‘Seven Hills’ range of meats which are only sourced from local farms. While it’s John’s passion and vision that powers the business, it’s his dedicated team that deliver the services and quality product that keep customers coming back time and time again. Staff are trained and encouraged to develop product knowledge so they can serve with confidence and advise what’s great to eat and how to cook it. Understanding what customers want and responding to changing trends is a key part of John Crawshaw’s continued success. But it’s not change just for the sake of it. John is proud of his dry-cured bacon which he describes as ‘bacon like it used to be’. He points out that John Crawshaw’s smoked bacon is cured in a traditional smoke house for a superior taste, not sprayed and dyed like some supermarket packs. The same care and attention is also lavished on the Seven Hills beef that is

T

ever popular with customers because it is matured on-site for six to eight weeks for added flavour and tenderness. John Crawshaw’s range of award-winning pies, sausages, cooked meats and sandwiches are all prepared from scratch on the premises, which means there is always a wide choice of freshly-prepared food to enjoy from the deli counter. For those that like the traditional butcher’s quality, but want something more convenient, there is a wide choice of ready-to-cook dishes such as chilli beef stir fry or chicken and chorizo wrapped in smoked bacon, so they can enjoy home-cooked food with the convenience of a ready meal. They also bake a mean cake, which is great for those of us with a sweet tooth. With shops in Stocksbridge, Chapeltown and Hillsborough plus a dedicated market stall at the new Fox Valley Market you are never more than a few minutes away from John Crawshaw – the expert butcher for food lovers – so pop in the next time you are passing. You will not be disappointed. John Crawshaw 518 – 523 Manchester Road, tocksbridge, S36 2DW Tel: 0114 2883548 www.johncrawshaws.co.uk @PulseRMC

CHRISTMAS

There’s an exciting Christmas in store at Fox Valey

Get crafty

Visit a Christmas market Based on their glitzy grand opening, Fox Valley in Stocksbridge sure knows how to throw a party. And their first Christmas Markets on Friday 18 and Saturday 19 November promise to be just as exciting. The usual Friday market will take place between 9am and 3pm followed by a traditional Christmas market and Christmas light switch on in partnership with Dearne FM from 4pm to 7pm. The Christmas Markets will continue from 10am to 4pm on the Saturday for another full day of festive fun. Browse for Christmas gift ideas including handmade traditional toys and decorations, hampers, and gift sets, as well as fresh produce, baked goods and flowers. The Christmas lights switch on event will include fairground rides, Deepcar Brass Band, late night shopping, a choir and a radio road show. The festive decorations at Fox Valley will feature a stunning illuminated seven-metre reindeer and local youngsters have been invited to enter a competition to name the reindeer for a chance to help switch on the Christmas lights at 7pm on Friday 18 November. Entry forms can be found in all stores, cafes and restaurants across Fox Valley. Post your ideas in the suggestions box inside Pets at Home or enter online at www.foxvalleysheffield.co.uk. The competition closes on Monday 14 November.

If your supermarket has already sold out of advent calendars, don’t despair. There is another option - make your own. Happy Hare on Arundel Road in Chapeltown are hosting a Christmas Stocking Advent Calendar sewing workshop on 12 November between 10am and 3pm, where you can cut out and assemble 24 individual stockings into a bunting-style advent calendar. Though this session is for beginners, you must have some experience of using a sewing machine. If you enjoy that, there’s more textile fun with a Patchwork Christmas Tree session on 22 November. This involves making a patchwork wall hanging to furnish your walls and doors. And on 20 December, get the kids involved with Happy Hare’s Make a Christmas Bauble workshop. Drop in any time between 10am and 4pm, grab a papier mâché bauble and get busy with some buttons, sequins and glitter. All materials for both events are provided - just bring your creative can-do attitude. To find out more about these and other regular events, visit www.handmadehappyhare.com.

It’s a berry nice pint! IT MUST BE CHRISTMAS, BRADFIELD BREWERY’S BELGIAN BLUE IS BACK AGAIN. t was in 2006 that beer lovers first supped a pint of Belgian Blue. Those who tried the seasonal beer soon got a taste for its berry overtones and slight blue tint to the head, and ten years later Bradfield Brewery’s Christmas ale has become a festive phenomenon, selling 350,000 pints in 2015. “People look forward to it coming out, they associate it with Christmas,” said brewery owner John Gill. “It’s a phenomenon that’s built up year on year, each year it has been getting more popular.” John and his family began brewing beer at Watt House Farm in 2005, when plummeting milk prices forced the dairy farmers to diversify. The cow shed was transformed into a brewery and soon Belgian Blue became an essential part of Bradfield’s Christmas celebrations. “Belgian Blue has been around since the beginning, but people don’t often realise that,” said John. “One of the first pubs I remember having a pint of Blue in was the Robin Hood at Stannington, which has been converted into housing now.” Today, Belgian Blue travels much further than Stannington, with requests for the beer coming in from across the UK and Ireland. A fan in Belfast has requested Blue for their festivities, and one bottle even made it all the way to Jamaica, to celebrate Christmas in sunnier climates. But Belgian Blue’s journey to the Christmas dinner table starts much closer to home, when the first lorry loads of the beer’s closely guarded, secret ingredients arrive at Watt House Farm in October. From then it takes around ten

I

days to create the first pints, with the process to create bottles of Blue taking slightly longer. October is the busiest month for brewing at Bradfield, with around 130,000 pints brewed each week. In one particular week Bradfield Brewery produced 520 brewers barrels of beer – around 150,000 pints. By late October, Belgian Blue is ready for launch, and the first pint is pulled in the Nags Head Inn, the brewery’s own pub, just a mile away from where Blue is brewed. For the first time last year, the beer was launched at a specific time, 4pm. By the time the chimes struck, beer lovers from near and far had arrived for their first taste of the Christmas. “We were surprised how many people turned up,” said John. “The pub was completely full, some people had even taken the next day off work.” To celebrate this year’s launch, Bradfield Brewery asked their Facebook fans how many pints of Belgian Brew were poured on that launch night in 2015 in the Nags. The exact number was 560, between 4pm and 11pm, which works out at more than a pint a minute. For those who can’t make it to the Nags Head, Belgian Blue is available on draft at pubs across Sheffield and further afield. It is also available in 500ml bottles and 5 litre mini kegs from the brewery’s onsite shop and other shops nationwide. Also available from the brewery shop is a great range of merchandise, clothing and gifts. For more information on what’s available, and the seasonal ales planned for next year, visit www.bradfieldbrewery.com.

THE HOME OF QUALITY FROM STUNNING HAND-CRAFTED KITCHENS TO BESPOKE FURNITURE, DAVID J MARTIN’S ATTENTION TO DETAIL PRODUCES BEAUTIFUL RESULTS. n these days of mass produced furniture it seems almost impossible to find beautiful bespoke, handmade pieces, whether that be for your kitchen, bedroom, study or lounge. At David J Martin customers are welcomed into the firm’s on-site workshop, to see their furniture come to life. “People often don’t believe that the workshop is here, under the showroom” said owner David Martin. “Then we bring them downstairs and they’re blown away.” There’s a team of eight, highly trained carpenters working on kitchen cabinets and islands, bedroom furniture, desks and study furniture, each one made unique to order. David himself is a carpenter by trade, training for years before completing a degree in the subject. He ensures his staff are trained to the highest standard, resulting in the finest quality products. Everything at David J Martin happens under one roof, so David himself can check the quality and finish of each product at every stage of the process. “Our attention to detail is second to none and this makes us stand out from the crowd,” said David. “We are not held to ransom by mass-produced products as we make everything from scratch – even down to

making our own cutters for producing mouldings.” This means you can add to your kitchen in years to come and the company will still be able to match the designs. In the David J Martin showroom, a stunning range of kitchens is on display, but the company also produces bespoke furniture for every room in the house. For the bedroom, the company builds beautiful wardrobes, and other unique storage solutions for difficult spaces. For the study, David’s team of carpenters can build desks and media spaces.

After an initial customer consultation, when David will discuss budgets and offer expert design advice, the cabinetmakers work from plans drawn by David and create bespoke furniture, which can be sprayed to high gloss or satin finishes using durable Two Pac paint. With larger companies, you will often see doors advertised as having a ‘high-gloss finish’. This means that they are vinylwrapped and, although this does produce a shiny look, it means that you will be able to see the joins. David J Martin’s professional sprayer can apply any colour you wish in their paintspraying booth, giving a modern finish with no joins. That means water cannot seep in and cause peeling – something that can happen with vinyl-wrapped doors. Everything is done in-house, which enables David to guarantee high quality at every stage. For those customers undertaking full refurbishment of their home, David J Martin can provide a one-stop shop for structural, plumbing and electricity work, as well as building furniture. David said: “We run a building company alongside our bespoke joinery company, so customers are not waiting for plumbers, electricians and so on. We can take care of

everything and ensure that the project is completed to the highest standard.” For David it’s all about creating a high quality customer experience, whether the job be big or small. One call to David J Martin could result in a stunning new extension, complete with kitchen, plumbing and electricity – David only employs the best tradesmen. In the company’s 36 years of trading, David J Martin has built a superb reputation for customer satisfaction. The company is highly

A life full of memories FROM THE TERROR OF THE BLITZ TO HAPPY HOLIDAYS ON THE FAMILY CANAL BOAT, SIGNATURE LOXLEY PARK RESIDENT ENA HAS HAD A RICH AND VARIED LIFE. ood Friday in 1933 was a beautiful spring day, with the daffodils in bloom and the sun shining. There was a party going on in the village of Saxelby and Grimstone, near Melton Mowbray, with the entire village out celebrating the first baby born in 13 years. She was six weeks premature, weighed only three-and-a-half pounds and was called Ena Wright. Ena lived happily in the village for the early part of her childhood, before the family moved to a village outside Leicester when she was four. It was at nine that Ena witnessed one of the most momentous and horrific events of the Second World War. At the height of the Blitz, on the night of the 14th November 1940, over 400 Luftwaffe bombers attacked Coventry. Although the city was far away from her little village, the devastation filled the skies. “It’s always stuck in my memory. My dad and I stood in the garden and watched the skies, which were filled with terror. We turned on the news the next day and Coventry had completely gone.” When the war ended and normality returned, Ena was able to indulge her love of sport. As a teenager she represented her county in both rounders and netball. When she wasn’t on the sports field she spent a lot of time in her local church, which put on activities for youngsters in the village. “We would go nearly every day, playing games and performing in concerts. I used to play the piano and the room was filled with people singing and dancing.” After the war, village life was enriched by the arrival of an influx of Londoners looking to start a new life. The newcomers also added to the zip of the local church concerts. Ena’s school holidays were often spent with her beloved grandparents, either cockling on the coast of Norfolk or joining them at work.

“My grandmother worked in the kitchen at Holkham Hall for Lord Leicester and my grandpa looked after the gate; I used to visit in the school holidays and I even met Princess Margaret. She used to Ena Negus ride in the grounds on horseback with her friends and they asked me if I’d like to try it but I never dared – I thought I’d get on one side of the horse and fall off the other!” At 26, Ena married her husband Peter and they had a son, Andrew, two years later. Testing times KIP MCGRATH’S CENTRE DIRECTOR, DAVID KAYE, LOOKS AT HOW OUR CHILDREN CAN COPE IN A TESTING WORLD. hildren in our schools are amongst the most tested in the world. Whenever this is challenged we are told that we need to know how they are doing or that the results help us to ensure quality in our education. One thing is for sure – our children have to take tests and, to achieve certain things in life, they have to pass them. It has been said that you need GCSEs to dig a hole in the road, although I can’t imagine someone repairing your water, gas or electricity thinking about Shakespeare, the finer points of grammar or trigonometry. So why the need for GCSEs? The simple answer is to open the door to more opportunities. I am often approached by parents wanting to get their children through exams and tests. Frequently, they have waited too long and the mountain to climb has become considerable. Here are a few thoughts on how to help your child on their way:

C

Don’t leave it too late – If you or your child are feeling unsure, get an independent assessment and take action. A few months before exams is too late – much better to take action sooner. Develop good habits – Good and regular homework, eating, bedtime and social routines will help take the pressure off. Regular exercise will make your child feel better, helps with stress and aids concentration.

David Kaye with some young pupils

There is no magic wand – To succeed you need effort (and some ability). A tutor or teacher can lead you to the water, but you have to do the drinking.

Be realistic – It is said that if you aim for the moon and miss, you will land among the stars. This is not necessarily true. A target that is too ambitious and missed becomes demoralising.

David Kaye is the centre director for Kip McGrath Education Centres Sheffield North in Ecclesfield and was a former head teacher with 26 years’ experience in South and West Yorkshire.

Eat small portions – Not food, goals. A realistic short-term goal that is achieved will spur your child on to the next challenge and the next. This can become a virtuous circle.

Kip McGrath, Office 12, Haywood House, Hydra Business Park, Nether Lane, Ecclesfield, Sheffield, S35 9ZX Tel: 0114 257 777 www.kipmcgrath.co.uk/sheffield-north

LOOKING BACK

Parkin Jeffcock (above) died during the rescue operation after the disastrous explosion at the Oaks Colliery (left)

Day disaster struck at Oaks Colliery CAN YOU HELP HISTORIANS TRACE THE DESCENDENTS OF VICTIMS KILLED IN MINING TRAGEDY. onday 12 December marks the 150th anniversary of England’s worst mining disaster - the Oaks Colliery disaster of 1866. Killing 384 men and boys, it was the greatest loss of life at any pit in the country. Though the event took place in Barnsley, many of the workers had links with the Chapeltown, High Green and Ecclesfield community. Mining engineer Parkin Jeffcock lived at Cowley Manor near Chapeltown and his family owned Mortomley Hall. He was one of 27 rescuers who went in search of trapped survivors after hearing that there had been an explosion and the pit was on fire. Unfortunately, there was a second and third explosion and Parkin also lost his life. In 1867, St Saviour’s church was built on Mortomley Lane to remember this brave man. Many of the windows in the church show fire and flames in memory of the Oaks explosion. Members of the Chapeltown and High Green Archive have managed to track down one of Parkin’s descendents, Sir William Jeffcock, but are still trying to track down the descendants of three other men who lost their lives in the disaster. John Armfield was born in 1848 and lived

near Ecclesfield Hall and then on Hesley Lane in Thorpe Hesley, James Haycroft was born in 1839 and lived on Warren Lane in Chapeltown and Thomas Dickenson was born in 1836 and lived on Potter Hill in High Green. In keeping with our mining theme, local history author Joan Jones has submitted this photo of miners (above right) from Smithy Wood Colliery near Chapeltown. The man standing on the left has been identified as George Greensmith (born 1905, died 1967), but can you identify the other men, the lady or what the occasion was? If you have any details about the three men who lost their lives in the Oaks disaster or about this photo, call Phoebe Seymour on 0114 250 6300 or email phoebe.seymour@rmcmedia.co.uk.

Above: Can you identify the people in this picture?

MEMORIAL SERVICE The Chapeltown and High Green Archive will be commemorating those men who lost their lives with an exhibition at St Saviour’s Church on Mortomley Lane from Friday 9 to Sunday 11 December. Everyone is welcome to attend the church service at 11am on Sunday and the exhibition is open between 2pm and 4pm.

MOTORING

All-terrain E-Class is ready for some rough and tumble

Luxury and practicality

J0RDAN CUTFORTH’S ROUND-UP OF THE LATEST FROM THE WORLD OF MOTORING

Remember the FF, that exotic V12 supercar powertrain embodied under a family friendly, four-seater shooting brake body? Well if so you’ll be pleased to know that Ferrari has updated its design to this, the GTC4 Lusso. Unlike the normal GTC4 Lusso, which comes equipped with a 680hp 6.3-litre naturally aspirated V12, the GTC4 Lusso T (pictured), wades into battle with the same 3.9-litre turbocharged V8 from the 488 GTB supercar. While the V8 may not be as powerful as the V12 – 600hp plays 680hp – the V8 has more torque, 561lb ft against 514lb ft, which should make it a more effortless drive. It takes just 3.5 seconds 0-62mph, with a top speed exceeding 199mph. Unlike the GTC4 Lusso, the T is rear-drive only.

Think Audi A6 Allroad and Skoda Octavia Scout, that’s what Mercedes has done to their all-new E-Class. Named the E-Class All-Terrain, it’s an EClass with a 29mm ride height gain over the standard model, some off-roader rugged styling and some flared wheel arches. As its more tough looks suggest, the EClass All-Terrain has been designed to tackle the worst the British weather can throw at us. As standard there’s four-wheel drive, and with what Mercedes call ‘AIR BODY CONTROL’, the air suspension can be raised by a further 20mm at speeds up to 35km/h. Arriving in 2017, the E-Class All-Terrain will be available with a 2.0-litre 194hp diesel. A six-cylinder diesel will follow afterwards. A nine-speed automatic transmission comes as standard.

Rugged looks: The Mercedes E-Class All-Terrain

The all-electric smart

smart on the charge Welcome to the fourth generation of the electric smart; a smart car powered only by electricity. With this technology being available now on all body styles – smart fortwo, smart cabrio and smart forfour – it makes smart the only car manufacturer worldwide to offer its model range with both combustion engines and pure battery-electric drive. This fourth generation system incorporates a 60kW battery, or in layman’s terms, a motor which produces 81hp and is good for 160Nm of torque. This all means the 0-62mph dash takes 11.5 seconds with a maximum range of 100 miles. The cabrio and forfour models represent 11.8 and 12.7 seconds respectfully with both having a maximal range of 96 miles. Ity goes on sale in early 2017.

MINI’s latest edition of the Clubman has finally been introduced to the John Cooper Works treatment. Apart from a meaner and overall more aggressive looking exterior package with upgraded suspension, braking, cooling features, the Clubman John Cooper Works edition gets some upgraded running shoes in the form of a 231hp 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol unit. This means the Clubman will hit 0-62mph in 6.3 seconds and go all the way, if needs be, to a max of 148mph. Power from the potent 2.0-litre motor will be sent to all four wheels via either a six-speed manual or an eight-speed flappy paddle job. The Clubman can achieve figures of 41.5mpg on the combined cycle and 154g/km of CO2. Dealerships taking orders now priced from £29,345. The MINI Clubman has had the John Cooper Works treatment
