A significant milestone DISCERNING CUSTOMERS APPRECIATE THE FIRST CLASS WORKMANSHIP THAT GOES INTO CREATING A DAVID J MARTIN KITCHEN. THAT THE BUSINESS WILL BE SHORTLY CELEBRATING 40 YEARS IS TESTAMENT TO ITS SUCCESS. 4 www.rmcmedia.co.uk

ne of Sheffield’s most successful and long-standing businesses celebrates its 40th anniversary in December, and in typically low-key style there are no plans for big parties or celebrations. David J. Martin Joinery Ltd has been creating stunning bespoke furniture, primarily for kitchens but also for bedrooms, studies and lounges, from the same business base on Springvale Road, Walkley since 1980. Forty years is a significant landmark for any business but David intends to observe this special achievement simply by extending the workshop to accommodate a few more machines. There will be a revamp of the showroom too. Sounds a bit dull? If you’re looking for a wild party, maybe so. But for the steady stream of satisfied customers who have been won over by David’s obsession with doing every job to the highest possible standards it will come as no surprise. “I’m doing what I always wanted to do since I was at school,” says David, a carpenter by trade who studied for many years, starting with a City and Guilds in joinery and finishing up with a degree in his chosen subject. “I loved joinery and technical drawing and still get a lot of satisfaction from seeing a job through from start to finish.” Kitchens account for most of the work being done by David and his eightstrong team who are all highly trained and at the top of their game. Everything – and that does mean every single thing – is made from scratch with kitchens painstakingly designed to the last millimetre to suit the size and style of the home and meet the requirements of the customer. Every piece of wood is sanded in house, every colour is mixed and sprayed by the company’s own full time professional paint sprayer, and every sharp corner is rounded off by hand. “There’s no such thing as a typical David J Martin kitchen,” says David. “The fact that we make everything means the customer can have whatever they want. Everyone has a different view as to how a kitchen works, so a large part of my job is talking it through with them and finding out exactly what they would like.” One recent trend is for a kitchen that doubles as a space for dining and socialising. “Even if they don’t do a lot of cooking, people want an island unit that family and friends can gather around,” says David.

O

“We often find ourselves working in some very nice houses where the original kitchen was quite small, it was simply a place to prepare food in. So we are not just planning on where to put the new kitchen, we are also knocking down walls.” When this happens David J Martin, who is a member of the Guild of Master Craftsmen, can provide a one-stop shop for structural, plumbing and electricity work as well as building furniture. The Shaker style of kitchen – not fussy, uncluttered, beautiful clean lines and an orderly approach – is finding favour with an increasing number of clients. And while it may seem at first glance that this streamlined style lends itself to mass production, David’s refusal to compromise on quality is finding favour with discerning clients who appreciate first class workmanship and a product that will truly stand the test of time. “If any of my lads consults me on how to do things there’s usually a quick way and a slow way – and the slow way is usually better, so that’s what we do. We don’t cut corners.” It generally takes three to four months from consultation to completion to finish a kitchen including six weeks to make and three to five weeks to fit, depending

on the amount of building work involved. David says: “Because we work as a team – plasterers, electricians, plumbers and fitters – everyone is lined up to come in and work as and when we need them. There is no delay and disruption for the customer is always kept to a minimum.” It’s at the design stage that David’s technical drawing skills come into their own as he prefers to show customers his own line drawings rather than using a CAD (computer aided design) machine. “Hand-drawn plans alongside photos of what we are starting from show a much truer depiction of what we are going to do and clients who are ordering a bespoke kitchen like it.” Looking to the future, David’s son Richard has worked for the company for 12 years and is now an integral part of the team, and with grandson Oliver the latest addition to the family, who’s to say this family business won’t still be going strong in another 40 years. Maybe then they’ll throw a party! David J. Martin Joinery Ltd 210 Springvale Road, Walkley Sheffield. S6 3NU Tel: 0114 268 6718 www.david-j-martin.co.uk

Reconciliation service

Young traders excel at Fox Valley market The team at Fox Valley hosted the centre’s first Teen Trader Market with a host of budding young entrepreneurs taking part in the event. Students aged from 11-16 from schools across the region were invited to take up a market stall and promote their businesses in a real retail environment at the busy north Sheffield shopping centre. The stall fee was £10 per pitch and all the proceedings went to the centre’s chosen charity Bluebell Wood. All the businesses taking part in the event were judged by the 2012 Apprentice finalist Adam Corbally and the Mayor of Stocksbridge Cllr Catherine Ward alongside Greg Christofi from Neomed and event sponsor The Old Bridge Bakery. The winning venture was an upholstery and upcycling business owned by 15-year-old Florence Egan. Florence was awarded £100 to invest back into her business. Lighten your mood THE RIGHT LIGHTS CAN MAKE ALL THE DIFFERENCE THIS WINTER, WRITES RACHEL MARTIN. The end of British summertime, and the arrival of gloomy mornings and evenings can leave many in an equally miserable mood – which is why lighting at home becomes crucial at this time of year. Here are seven winter lighting ideas that will brighten up your space (and your outlook).

T

This eco-friendly bamboo pendant light has been handmade in Vietnam. The cluster of three hanging lights combines natural materials with a contemporary design; ideal for positioning above kitchen islands and dining tables. Bamboo Manta triple pendant light by Modish Living, £119.99. www.modishliving.co.uk

The Muse outdoor lantern by Contardi is the perfect day-to-night lighting solution for lazy evenings. Made from smoothly dimpled glass, this pendant light refracts light evenly and beautifully across your room. The gold fitting gives it a mildly nostalgic and vintage feel, meaning it will pair perfectly with contemporary, classic or antique items. Hang either side of your bed, above a chest of drawers or in a cluster. Rose pink glass pendant light by The French Bedroom Co, £85. www.frenchbedroomcompany. co.uk

HOME & GARDEN

Light up all areas of the garden with this sleek mast light. The simplistic design makes it versatile for use everywhere; whether you have two either side of your doorway, a few to light up flowerbeds or to space evenly around the house. Why not use the mast light indoors, too? We think it would look great in a reading alcove, kitchen or bedside. Mast light in raw copper by Garden Trading, £45. www.gardentrading.co.uk

A great architectural lighting tool, shelf lighting can add an indirect softness and at the same time create a feature in the room. Think of shelves as a window in the room or even like a wall light. Backlit shelves with contour HD24 by John Cullen Lighting, £114. www.johncullenlighting.com

For the industrial themed home, this is the perfect minimalist Scandi style inspiration to get that on-trend style. This copper lamp with stone base can add manufacturing chic into any room and will look stylish and retro with an Edison bulb; ideal for adding some modern and contemporary lighting style to the living room hallway or bedroom. Industrial copper table lamp by Windsor Browne, £26.95. www.windsorbrowne.co.uk

This quirky neon light is perfect for brightening up any area in your home, and with a two-metre-long USB cable, there’s no restrictions on where you can put it. Great for parties and family occasions or for simply adding a bit extra to your bedroom, this light will also make a perfect gift. Doors of distinction FOR QUALITY TIMBER DOORS, LOOK NO FURTHER THAN DISTINCTIVE DOORS. hether you are offering a warm welcome to family and friends or making sure a premises is properly secure, a good door is essential. From stylish front and interior doors for the home or garden, to practical doors for business premises, one local firm can take care of all your needs - Distinctive Doors of Chapeltown. The business was first established in 1993 and with director Ricky Staniforth at the helm it has gone from strength to strength. Whatever your needs, quality is the key, and Distinctive Doors specialise in timber doors for interior and exterior use, keeping away from composite doors. As a joiner who has worked on both sites and in a manufacturing workshop Ricky, whose first foray into doors was as part of the team installing them on Meadowhall shopping centre, knows the business inside out. He has also gathered a highly skilled team around him with specific expertise in sales, warehousing, logistics and handling and manufacturing. Ricky says: “We have a dedicated sales team to answer any queries customers might have, as well as our own in-house delivery service and dispatch team to ensure goods arrive in

W

perfect condition. Also, we have our own workshop for manufacturing customised exterior door sets including the frame.” Distinctive Doors use engineered timber and other materials in order to build a more stable door, as solid timber has a tendency to twist and bow. So for exterior doors they use wood that is engineered to resist the failings of solid timber. Interior doors are made from Grade A veneers which always offer a solid core for stability. Ricky says: “We’ve always competed on quality as opposed to price, but as we are an internet-based business our prices are extremely competitive. We won’t be as cheap as some of the big national chains but we will be close... and our products are far superior.” Whether your tastes are contemporary or traditional, Distinctive Doors has a style to suit with a variety of choices in a multitude of beautiful designs. Come a Casa Come A Casa has built up a fantastic reputation in the short time it has been open on Lound Side in Chapeltown. Come A Casa means ‘like at home’ in Italian and that is the impression you get when you walk through the door into the relaxed atmosphere and the warm welcome from head chef Hawry Kareeme, who has finally realised his dream of opening his own restaurant after years of experience. He says: “I was taught to cook Italian food by a chef from Sardinia, and I picked up on that passion. I’ve worked in two different Italian restaurants but now I have the chance to open my own and I’m very happy how it’s going. I use a specialist supplier for the Italian ingredients and we get our meat from Crawshaws Butchers just next door.” The menu includes traditional favourites, from pasta and pizza dishes along with an extensive grill and seafood section. Be pleasantly surprised IF YOU’RE HAVING A CLEAR-OUT, DON’T BE QUICK TO THROW YOUR OLD JEWELLERY AWAY – IT MAY HAVE SOME WORTH. SPEAK TO THE EXPERTS AT PA JEWELLERY. any of us accumulate pieces of jewellery over the years; birthday gifts, family heirlooms, holiday souvenirs. When having a clear out it is not unusual to discover odd earrings, broken chains or pieces you no longer wear hiding in your jewellery box. Although these may seem like ‘rubbish’ you may be surprised to learn how much they are worth, so it is worth checking with a jeweller before throwing them away. Even broken bits of silver, gold, platinum or palladium will have some value, and if you are not sure what your jewellery is made from then ask; our customers are often pleasantly surprised. There are then several things you may be able to do…

M

Remodel We can often re-use your precious metal or gemstones, making them into a new piece of jewellery, a popular option with those who have inherited jewellery or have sentimental pieces that have worn out over time. This could mean setting a treasured diamond into a new mount or melting some family gold to create a wedding

band with a personal touch. Our jewellers can advise you on what is possible and work with you on design ideas. In addition to being a fantastic way of maintaining sentiment this can often (although not always) save you money when compared to the cost of buying a similar piece.

Part exchange Sometimes you might want a new watch or a piece of jewellery that can’t be made using your existing materials. In this instance you might choose to part exchange your old jewellery or watch against the cost of the new. You will normally receive a higher offer for your items if you do this so if you are thinking of buying something it is worth

considering. Even if you are not sure what you want yet, we can put your part exchange value on a gift card to spend with us later.

Sell for cash If you aren’t looking for anything new you can still sell your unwanted jewellery for cash. You may be surprised by how much it is worth and this option gives you the chance to turn items you no longer use into cash to treat yourself (or a friend!). We may pay more for pieces we can re-sell as second-hand items, although considerations such as condition and style will be important. You don’t need an appointment to enquire about selling, part-exchanging or remodelling your jewellery; we are always happy to look at your pieces. In most cases we can offer immediate advice, and should you choose to sell, immediate payment. One of the most important recent developments has been the introduction of state-of-the-art time-lapse incubators, which enables embryos to be placed in an incubator where their development is uninterrupted and can be monitored closely; allowing scientists to select the embryo that has the best chance of achieving a pregnancy. Whether you are receiving IVF through the NHS or are funding it yourself, all treatments at Jessop Fertility include time lapse technology, embryo glue and early pregnancy monitoring at no additional cost. As well as IVF, Jessop Fertility offers a full range of fertility treatments,

including a comprehensive range of assisted conception techniques, such as Intra-Cytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI) and treatments involving donor sperm and eggs. The unit launched a Pre Implantation Genetic Testing (PGT) service in 2018, which involves the careful removal of cells from the outside of an embryo, to check that it has the correct number of chromosomes, and also offer a Pre Implantation Genetic Diagnosis (PGD) service for couples who are at risk of having a child with a genetic condition. No matter what type of treatment or fertility service you need, it is always tailored to you, your diagnosis and your wellbeing and explained simply and clearly by your consultant. Want to know more about the fertility process? Got any questions about infertility? If you are considering fertility treatment, you’re bound to have lots of questions. Jessop Fertility’s monthly open afternoons [Saturday 3-5pm] provide an opportunity to have a good look around the clinic, talk about your fertility journey, get advice on the range of treatments available and meet the fertility team. Or if you prefer, you can book an informal one-to-one visit. Jonathan Skull is Clinical Lead at Jessop Fertility

Patient Testimonial “The staff at Jessop Fertility really were excellent, they listened to our concerns at every stage and worked to help us feel reassured. It might feel like the odds for a successful IVF pregnancy aren’t high enough to risk going through the emotional rollercoaster of treatment, but it is absolutely worth it when you get that positive result. Thankfully, our dreams came true in the form of our gorgeous little girl, Joy, who was born in February 2018 – we love her so much.” www.rmcmedia.co.uk 47

APPROVED SALON

At Brightholmlee Methodist Church in celebration of 212 years of mission and ministry, we are once again lighting up our chapel this December for our 6th annual Christmas Tree Festival. As in previous years we are hoping to involve all of our local community, with local organisations, people and businesses sponsoring and decorating trees. We are so appreciative of the many people who contribute to this successful event and the local community who help us raise money for local charities. Once again all the money raised is going to charity. This year we have chosen to support:

• Friends of Sheffield Children's Hospital • Yorkshire Air Ambulance • Heads Together Barnsley (supporting families in trauma) Our Christmas Tree Festival will be running from Friday 13th, Saturday 14th and Sunday 15th December from 3pm to 7pm on Friday and Saturday. On Sunday we will be open from 12noon until 3pm. The festival will close on the Sunday afternoon with our Carols and Christingle Service at 4pm to which everyone is invited! There will be a small number of stalls and activities for children. Entry is free, all we ask is visitors make a donation or have a go on the raffle. Refreshments will also be available.

If you would like to sponsor a tree or get involved in this event please contact Gill on 0114 2862647 or 07960 638490 or e-mail gilladams47@gmail.com

Christmas in Vienna From the middle of November until Christmas, Vienna's prettiest squares transform into magical Christmas markets, whilst the aroma of cinnamon, hot punch and toasted almonds hangs in the air and The Old City and shopping streets are decorated with festive lights that create a truly yuletide atmosphere. A tall arched gateway lined with candles welcomes visitors at the entrance to City Hall Square for the Vienna Christmas World on Rathausplatz. The 150 stalls offer Christmas gifts, decorations, handicrafts, culinary treats, confectionery and warming drinks. A special attraction for couples is the tree of hearts, where visitors can skate over a 3,000 m² ice rink and along numerous paths through the park. The Children's World offers a carousel, a reindeer train and wonderful light installations, which are based on Christmas stories for little ones. Not far from here is the Christmas Village on Maria-Theresien-Platz, between the Kunsthistorisches Museum Vienna and the Naturhistorisches Museum Vienna. Over 70 booths offering traditional handicrafts and original gift ideas are set up here during

Advent and gospel choirs and music groups create a festive mood. The Christmas Village then transitions seamlessly into the New Year's Eve Village. With a children's railway and old-fashioned carousel, the Christmas Village in the Altes AKH is also a big hit with families. The Old Viennese Christmas Market on Freyung is committed to tradition. The first Christmas market was held here as early as 1772 and today, it is a place to buy handicrafts, glass decorations, traditional mangers and ceramics. Find out more: https://www.wien.info

markets in Berlin, and they include traditional, avant-garde, and pop-up events. One of the most charming is at Gendarmenmarkt, close to Friedrichstraße. Framed by the illuminated French and German Cathedral, you pay just a euro entry to wander the many festive booths or visit the heated craftsmen tent where you can watch toy makers, goldsmiths, and wood carvers at work. The nostalgic Christmas market at the Opernpalais has an impressive array of artisans from all over the world, amusement rides and traditional culinary delights such as roasted almonds. While at the Domäne Dahlem Advent market, a former manor, you will find smiths, potters and musical instrument makers, as well as a weaving mill. From the Scandanavian-themed Lucia Weihnachtsmarkt and Berliner Weihnachtszeit at Roten Rathaus to the Hanukkah Market at the Jewish Museum, you will find Christmas markets in every district and neighbourhood of Berlin - be it Alexanderplatz, Charlottenburg, Spandau or many other places. CHRISTMAS

It’ll be ‘all-White’ on the night STANNINGTON PLAYERS PRESENT THEIR UNIQUE TAKE ON THE CLASSIC FAIRYTALE. ollowing on the success of last year’s spectacular seasonal production of Beauty and the Beast, the team at Stannington Players are gearing up for three days of festive fun and mischief this Christmas. The annual community pantomime will run from 5 - 7 December, with a total of four performances at Stannington’s Lomas Hall. This year, we will be joining Snow White and a whole host of characters as they celebrate the timeless tales 207th anniversary, combining the magic of the traditional fairytale with songs, sensational dance routines, laugh-outloud comedy and plenty of fun and silliness for all the family. The original and surprisingly gruesome narrative was first published in 1812 by the Brothers Grimm and included the now famed seven dwarfs, although not branded by the names Disney later went on to invent. We all know how the story unfolds; when the vain Wicked Queen discovers she is no longer the fairest in the land, she seeks revenge on her beautiful stepdaughter, tricking her with a poisoned apple - and the rest, so they say, is history. Or is it? Oh, not it isn’t. As unlike the Brothers Grimm, Stannington Players will be bringing to life a number of wacky and wonderful characters including Cedrick the henchman, the Queens evil companions: Sly, Slick and Shifty and not to mention Jimmy Jester and his girlfriend Marsha Mellow, each dafter than the other.

F

Lawrence Whyte will reprise his role as Dame for the magical performance. Those of you who’ve attended Stannington Players’ pantomimes over the years will know Lawrence well, having taken on the role for almost two decades. This time around, Lawrence will be playing Dame Marigold, a kindhearted greengrocer who aids in rescuing Snow White from the clutches of the evil Queen. “It’s pantomime time again and we’re incredibly excited to be bringing this fun-filled family performance to Lomas Hall,” Says Lawrence. “We’ve taken a familiar fairytale and embellished it with plenty of humour, songs, love, revenge, over-the-top acting and surprises along the way.” Revamped and lavishly brought to life in a production packed full of magic and buffoonery aplenty; dazzling costumes, eight [that’s right, we said eight] dwarfs and the hilarious appearance of a gorilla, bring the panto bang up-to-date and once again, this year’s talented cast come from a range of local schools and community groups. In addition, a small group of adult actors will be taking on some of the pantomimes larger-than-life roles, but there are no more spoilers on that here - you’ll have to go along and see for yourselves! “Pantomime has always been such a huge part of Stannington, and we are proud to be able to offer this opportunity to young people across the local community each year,” Lawrence continues. “Once again, we’ve all worked

extremely hard to create this year’s panto and we’re confident that there will be something for everyone to enjoy. It’s the perfect opportunity for families and friends to get together and celebrate the festivities.” With a reputation for producing some of the best performances in South Yorkshire since 1951, Stannington Players’ Snow White promises a show you won’t soon forget and will be raising funds in support of the groups Charity of the Year, Cavendish Cancer Care. “Snow White is a truly magical tale the whole family can enjoy together,” says Chairman, Stephen Rhodes. “We have a fantastic cast and a thrilling storyline and work is already underway to ensure we deliver an unforgettable production packed with audience interaction, comedy, villains, silliness and a few surprises here and there, all while raising money for a very worthy cause. That’s panto for you; a unique type of theatre where ordinary people do extraordinary things, where things are guaranteed to go wrong and where custard pies certainly aren’t in short supply.” Performances will take place at Lomas Hall from 5-7 December at 7.15pm, with a matinee performance on 7 December at 2.15pm. Tickets cost £7.50 for adults and £6.50 for concessions and include a complementary programme and refreshments. For more information about the show or to book call 07547 224057. All things bright and beautiful

TO COMMEMORATE 150 YEARS, A NEW STAINED GLASS WINDOW AT ST MARY’S CHURCH IN WALKLEY HAS BEEN UNVEILED. CHRIS WILSON TAKES A CLOSER LOOK. Photographs by Mark Rodgers ike many neighbourhood churches, St Mary’s on South Road, Walkley has evolved over the years to remain at the heart of the area it serves. Walk past the adjoining community hall at any given time of the week and you will find a well-used space that is home to art groups, a writers group, and various dance classes, a community choir, jazz bands, Karate and other groups. But 2019 has brought the Church itself firmly into focus as it has celebrated its 150th anniversary year, and the whole community has come together to help raise the £39,000 required to install a splendid new 21st century stained glass window. The new window was officially dedicated by the Bishop of Sheffield in a special service which was also attended by its creator Mark Angus, an acclaimed English stained glass artist now based in Bavaria. For the St Mary’s vicar, the reverend Melanie FitzGerald, the installation was the culmination of a busy period in the life of the church, which was consecrated in August 1869 and built before most of the other houses in the area appeared, although they were already planned. The new stained glass West window and complimentary seven small window in the narthex (or entrance porch) to the church were installed in June and as well as the celebratory service with ‘Bishop Pete’ other events, where the window has been enjoyed by lots of visitors included Walkley Festival, the Victorian Fair, a well dressing and a concert given by Silver Spectrum Wind Band.

A full peal of bells was rung in September, there have been Heritage weekends, and a Christmas tree festival is planned for the weekend of 7 December. Melanie, who was among the first wave of England’s women priests, has been vicar of St Mary’s for 16 years now and during that time has helped raise around £200,000 for windows, roof repairs, restored bells and better heating. She said: “The old west window was in a dilapidated state and in need of replacing. This was going to be expensive and getting a new window of stained glass was not going to cost a great deal more. The window was carefully chosen and planned by the church several years ago and we have been raising the funds ever since.” Fund-raising was a real community effort and included some children from the local St Mary’s C of E primary school who wrote letters of support for a successful grant application to help pay for the new windows. “We had great fun reading them,” says Melanie. Here are some quotes from the letters. “We desperately need to repair our window. We do an Easter and a Nativity play every year. Now it is nearly winter it is getting cold. The popularity will go down. We need a charity donation for our church. Spiders will come inside and the church will soon become damp. Not a lot of people will want to come to this school church. People will think that this school church doesn’t take care. It can also damage our school church. It makes our school church look shabby. Glass could fall out and hurt someone that would be extremely painful.” Razaa 70 www.rmcmedia.co.uk

“Wind and rain come inside to ruin our celebration they might damage all the important things in church.... Our window will look very shabby also it is winter and all the children and teachers will be very cold. The St Mary s church is a very peaceful and quiet place to go. We pray to God and hope that we have a beautiful window.” Jia “Please help us raise some money because we want to get another glass window so we can celebrate the 2019 150th anniversary.... This church is getting old and is getting more and more holes in the beautiful church and we do not want this. As a result, I would recommend that you would help to donate money although this is up to you what you do with your money.” Ben

* * * When it came to commissioning a stained glass artist the church chose Mark Angus. Melanie said: “His work seemed to be particularly suitable as his combination of the use of beautiful light and colour with the rooted solidness of his figures, illustrate the spiritual in the ordinary, God with us in the everyday world. “The new west window adds something of beauty from the 21st century to remind all who see it that the Christian faith is not just about the past, but is for the future too. It will be called the Resurrection window and follows the age-old tradition of telling key biblical stories through the medium of the windows. “The resurrection story being told is from the gospel of John (Jn 20.11-17) where Mary Magdalene finds the risen Jesus in the garden, it is one of the most beautiful passages in the bible. In the

design Mark Angus has created an upwards sweep starting at the darkest bottom left-hand corner with Jesus carrying the cross past the women of Jerusalem, the tomb is in the middle and then the risen Jesus and Mary a little higher up where it is lighter so that the eye is taken in an upward curve towards the top lighter tracery, depicting God as Father, Son and Holy Spirit and which breaks everything open in a vibrant blaze of light, hope and new life beyond the Ascension. “The seven small windows underneath the balcony area at the back of church depict other encounters of women with Jesus. It was felt that the Victorians tended to portray men most often in their stained glass windows and we wanted to depict the women instead, especially in a church that is called St Mary's. “So in these windows we have the nativity and the crucifixion and have included a miracle, Jesus healing and teaching a woman.” Meanwhile as the 150th anniversary year comes to a close life in and around St Mary’s Church continues. The Victorian church building, as well as being the local Church of England parish church and available for worship, baptisms, weddings and funerals, is also a 'heritage hub' and Melanie is keen to preserve and record its part in the history of Walkley. She says: “St Mary's was built for the community of Walkley, and we see the building as belonging to Walkley, church and hall, and we are here to look after it and provide hospitality, teaching and inner healing to all who wish to come to church or community hall.”

DO YOU REMEMBER?

Wharncliffe Arms XI FROM SCHOOL DAYS TO SPORTING DAYS... DO YOU RECOGNISE ANY OF THESE PUB PLAYERS? here’s no great mystery about this sporting line-up... take a look at the background and you can see which pub this football team represents! But if the photograph sparks any memories and you can fill us in one when it was taken we’d love to hear from you. Many thanks to Barry Couldwell for providing this month’s images. Last month’s photos were a flashback to school days as lived in the 1950s. The line-up of schoolteachers were the staff who taught Stocksbridge junior on the Shay House site in 1957. The other photograph dates back a time when the county minor became the 11-plus, and children from this area could no longer go to Penistone Grammar School before the age of 11. These children had to remain in a class at Stocksbridge Senior School in 1953, seemingly passing time, until old enough to take the exam. Sixer reader Janet Fielding (nee Hill) says: “I believe the photos

T

in the October edition of the Sixer in the Do You Remember section are from Stocksbridge Junior school teaching staff and the classroom I believe is my class. I think it is 1954/1955. Some names from the staff, second left back row is Miss Woodhead, centre back is Mr Lines, centre front Headmaster Mr West.” Many thanks to Janet for her contribution, now let’s see how you get on this month.

Write and send your photos to: Do You Remember?, Sixer, RMC Media, 6 Broadfield Court, Broadfield Business Park, Sheffield, S8 0XF. Alternatively, you can email your answer to chris.wilson@rmcmedia.co.uk

Proving them wrong DODDIE WEIR IS THE INSPIRATION FOR A SPECIAL FUND-RAISING DINNER IN SHEFFIELD. HE TALKS TO CHRIS WILSON ABOUT LIVING WITH – AND FIGHTING AGAINST – MOTOR NEURONE DISEASE. hen former Scotland rugby international Doddie Weir trapped his hand in a door a few years back he barely flinched. This 6ft 6ins man mountain, who played for his country 61 times between 1990 and 2000 and also represented the British Lions in 1997, was a tough lock forward whose body had withstood fearsome punishment at the highest level in a tough, bruising sport. “I thought I’d maybe broken a bone in the hand but would be OK in a few days, I’m an old rugby boy and a farmer so I don’t make a fuss. But in a couple of months the symptoms were still there and the loss of power was getting worse,” he recalls. “I also noticed that my skin was twitching. Now I know that when you put those symptoms together you come out with Motor Neurone Disease (MND).” There is no current cure for MND and while there are exceptions – including the physicist Stephen Hawking – about half of sufferers die within three years of developing symptoms. When Doddie, 49, was officially diagnosed with MND he was told by his doctor that within 12 months he’d be visiting the surgery in a wheelchair. Three years on he’s still walking, and still driving tractors and working on his smallholding in the Scottish Borders. His energy levels may have been depleted but he has an inner drive to keep active for as long as possible, to fight the illness every step of the way and to relish every extra second in the company of his wife Kathy and three sons – Angus, Hamish and Ben. But most of all he is driven by anger at the lack of medical research and help available to anyone diagnosed with MND. “When I was told I had MND the worst part was not the news that I had this disease but when I was told what the support would be. That’s what I could not get my head around.

“My attitude was: let’s get it fixed, let’s get it sorted. I found out there is one drug that came out 25 years ago that would extend your life by a few months, apart from that nothing. “So anyone with MND, you’ve got no chance, no options. There’s nothing new at the table, no drugs to help. I was told my life expectancy was two to three

years, which is quite horrific. And some people who have been diagnosed only live three or four months, which is horrendous. “So I’ve proved them wrong to some extent but my drive and my determination is to make a little bit of a difference. “The journey thereafter has been the

reason for what I am doing now with the foundation (My Name’5 Doddie Foundation).” Doddie believes one of the reasons there has been so little research in the last 25 years is the low number of people affected by MND – 500 in his home nation of Scotland out of a population of five million. “It is such a complex issue and there are such low numbers involved, that does not help because it is not financially viable for certain companies to get involved. “But it is a horrific way to end your life, dependant on so many people. It is a muscle wasting disease, your leg muscles disappear so you can’t walk, can’t move your arms and shoulders, you can’t eat, you can’t go to the toilet, eat or swallow, your diaphragm gives in so you can’t breathe. “You would have thought that would be enough for the Government and the NHS to offer more, and that’s been the driving force for the My Name’5 Doddie Foundation. If we can try and find help or a cure it gives people a chance. Because at the moment people have no chance.” Doddie’s plain speaking and determination not to give up hope has certainly struck a chord in the rugby world and beyond. “It’s overwhelming and humbling, the support I have received from individuals and organisations like Sheffield Rugby Club who have shown amazing enthusiasm for the cause. “I feel lucky, three years on from my diagnosis I am still able to get up and do most things, it has given me three years with my wife, my kids, my friends and the rugby community. Some people don’t have that, so in many ways I am fortunate that I can carry on fighting for a cure or a stoppage to MND… that’s my goal.” To find out more about the My Name’5 Doddie Foundation go to www.myname5doddie.co.uk

cotland and British Lions rugby legend Doddie Weir is the inspiration behind a fundraising dinner to be held at the Cutlers’ Hall, which highlights Sheffield’s position at the heart of a campaign to find a cure for MND (Motor Neurone Disease). Doddie was diagnosed with MND, which causes progressive damage to the nerves and muscle wastage, three years ago. His foundation – My Name’5 Doddie – has so far raised £4million for research into a cure and to provide grants for people living with the condition. It was a chance meeting with Sheffield Rugby Union Club’s chairman Andrew Langdale that led to Doddie coming to Sheffield on three occasions as a guest speaker to raise funds for the club in the days before he was diagnosed. And a further link to pioneering work being done at Sheffield University gives added significance to the dinner being held on 29 November with guest speakers Ian Robertson, the former Scottish international player and BBC commentator, and Kyran Bracken, exEngland scrum half and a member of the World Cup winning squad of 2003. Andrew explains: “You never forget when you first meet Doddie. I was at a Professional Rugby Association dinner in London sat on the same table and his enormous persona took over. “After my appointment as Chairman of Sheffield in 2010 I asked him if he’d do me a favour and come to a fundraising lunch as a guest speaker. Anyone who was in the room will remember it as a very special occasion, and one he was to repeat twice more. “Not only that but he did it for ‘mate’s

S

rates’ plus a magnum of what he calls my ‘posh wine’. “So now it’s our turn to do ‘mate’s rates’ back. Since his diagnosis Doddie has reacted as only Doddie could. He told me shortly afterwards that he had been given an opportunity to do something special with the last five years of his life. “That conversation still resonates with me. So to do our bit we as a club thought of a dinner to raise muchneeded funds for work in this area. “A huge coincidence followed whereby Doddie mentioned that Dame Professor Pamela Shaw was a Trustee of his charity but also was doing vital work in the field at her SITraN (Sheffield Institute for Translational Neuroscience) unit at Sheffield University. I met Pam shortly after and she was convinced that there was a link between Motor Neurone Disease and elite athletes but as of yet there was no research into it. “We immediately agreed that the funds raised from this event should be used to finance this three-year project. Our main sponsors of the event, Wilson Field, have kindly agreed a three-year term so that we can plan with certainty and deliver our promise to Doddie and Pam.” Wilson Field will be funding a research scholarship – the Wilson Field Blue Rose Scholarship. Nick Wilson, managing director of Wilson Field, added: “Pam Shaw is doing some incredible work and we are delighted to be doing all we can to help the people who are researching ways to find a cure to this distressing illness.” The dinner is on Friday 29 November at the Cutlers’ Hall, Sheffield. There are still two out of 34 tables left at £700 plus VAT, contact a.langdale@btinternet if you are interested. www.rmcmedia.co.uk 83

Power of five

NEW MODELS AND SPECIAL EDITIONS CAPTURE THE INTEREST OF JORDAN CUTFORTH.

The all-new Audi RS7 provides everything that you’d expect from a high-performance Audi – and things you wouldn’t expect too. Powered by a very familiar 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8, the RS7 has 592hp and 800NM of torque and thanks to the new five-seat configuration (the previous model being a four-seater), more people can enjoy this immense power. As with every RS product from Audi, there is Quattro all-wheel-drive and on this RS7, adaptive RS air suspension. Power is transferred through an eight-speed tiptronic transmission. The exterior is purposeful RS Audi design language with sharp edges producing a seriously impressive road presence, and the inside is typical Audi with high quality materials coupled with impeccable levels of technology.

Off Pista

Leading from the front The all-new BMW 1 Series is here and there are some radical changes – chief among which is that the 1-Series is now front-wheel-drive. Thanks to this new front-wheel-drive layout there is much more interior space than previous models, more noticeably in the rear seats with 33mm extra kneeroom, 19mm more headroom and 42mm more elbowroom. Engine choices available are three diesels – 116d (116hp and 61.4mpg), 118d (150hp and 60.1mpg), 120d (190hp and 51.4mpg) – and two petrol engines – 118i (140hp and 47.1mpg) and the M135i (306hp and 35.3mpg). Three transmissions are available depending on the engine choice: an upgraded six-speed manual, a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission and an eight-speed auto. Prices start from £24,430 and deliveries commence from late September. 84 www.rmcmedia.co.uk

Another new Abarth, and another stellar product. The Abarth version of the Fiat 500 is one of the naughtiest small hot hatches on the market right now – today we have a new model to add to the mix. Called the 595 Pista, it comes with a new oversized Garrett turbocharger helping develop 165hp. It comes with the extremely fruity sounding Record Monza exhaust system giving this car a very distinctive sound on the road. The 595 Pista is packed with standard equipment including a racing steering wheel with flat bottom and the “Sport” button which adjusts peak torque output, power steering settings and the throttle response for an even more thrilling drive. Prices start from £19,135.

Compact Kamiq Skoda’s all new compact SUV – the Kamiq – will be priced from £17,700. Four trim levels are available: S, SE, SE L and Monte Carlo. The entry-level model, the S, will come with 16-inch alloy wheels, LED lights, air conditioning, Swing infotainment system with DAB, a 6.5-inch touchscreen display and Skoda e-Call. Higher spec models come with the likes of larger alloy wheels, better infotainment systems, stop/start and blind-spot monitoring. The Kamiq range consists of four engine options; three petrol and one diesel. The petrol engine line-up features two 1.0 TSI units with 94hp and 113hp, and a 1.5 TSI motor that generates 148hp. The single diesel engine is a 1.6 TDI unit that develops 113hp.

The MG ZS EV on display in the Eric Stead showroom

Eric Stead MG Charging ahead SHEFFIELD MG DEALERSHIP WELCOMES THE NEW ZS EV TO ITS SHOWROOM. family-run, Sheffield-based motor dealership is celebrating, after it welcomed the longawaited MG ZS EV to its showroom – and it hasn’t disappointed. Award-winning Eric Stead, based in Ecclesfield, welcomed the all-electric family SUV which has received phenomenal write ups from the motor industry’s leading experts. Not only does it rate better than some larger manufacturers in a recent report from Car Magazine including the likes of Jaguar, Audi and Nissan, but it costs a lot less too. Simon Stead of the family-run business comments: “We are very excited to have our first MG ZS EV in the showroom for customers to come and look at and take it on test drives. Since MG announced its first fully electric car we have been inundated with enquiries. “Now it’s here, it really does look and drive beautifully. It’s the perfect family car as the UK and the rest of the globe look to electric travel.” Described as the first truly affordable, family friendly electric car, Eric Stead has already seen its pre-order records smashed as South Yorkshire families want to get their hands on the stylish ZS which starts from just from £21,995 (after plug-in car grant and MG grant). MG Motor UK has smashed its new

car pre-sales records by securing 1,000 orders for its sensational MG ZS EV in just two weeks. Lucky customers received a discount of £3,500 and received a free home charging point and standard installation. For its size the MG ZS EV is far from sluggish, it can accelerate from 0-62mph in 8.5 seconds, cover 163 miles on a single charge (with rapid charging capability) and accommodate the needs of most families thanks to its vast boot and large cabin. The ZS EV is MG’s most high-tech car ever, with the MG Pilot driver assistance suite setting new standards of specification and delivering exceptional value for money. Packed with innovative features, the ZS EV is designed to provide customers with a stress-free driving experience. MG Pilot is a driver assistance suite which complements the driver and offers support when required. Excite and Exclusive versions both include MG Pilot as standard, with features including

Advanced Emergency Braking, Blindspot Monitoring, Lane Keep Assist and Adaptive Cruise Control. The MG ZS EV is just the latest model to come from the motor giant following on from the ever-popular supermini the MG3 that is completely customisable and the MG ZS, which was launched back in 2017. MG Motor UK along with Eric Stead is certainly bucking the motor industry trend, seeing month on month sales of all models increasing. August was the best month to date with a 13.1 per cent increase compared with the same month in 2018 and in a market that declined by 1.6 per cent overall. With the introduction of ZS EV and its selection of top-class dealerships, MG has firmly positioned itself as the UKs fastest growing car manufacturer. If you would like more information about Eric Stead, the new MG ZS EV or any of its used car offering visit the website www.ericstead.co.uk or call 0114 245 4404.
