PULSECONTENTS
EDITOR’S MESSAGE: t has been one year this month since Ecclesfield Library was saved from closure by a troop of dedicated volunteers, and we are pleased to report that this invaluable local service is thriving. With plenty of events – including a talk by former Great British Bake Off contestant and Sheffield favourite Howard Middleton – in the pipeline, plans to renovate the loos, and some of the best new releases available to borrow, it’s little wonder the Ecclesfield community is making full use of the facility. Turn to page 18 to find out more. Elsewhere, we’re focusing on all-things homely. On page 8 you’ll find a beautiful spread of vintage explorer-themed interior treasures that will add a trendy twist to your home. And on page 10 we feature a raft of local companies who make it their business to ensure your home is kept in tip-top condition. If you’re thinking of undertaking some home improvements, look no further. We’ve also got our usual round-up of new season trends from local boutiques (page 22), and have travelled back to 1980s Ecclesfield for our Looking Back feature (page 42). If you have a story to share, are hosting an event that you’d like us to publicise or have photographs of a recent celebration or event, we’d love to hear from you. Email Stephanie.Burns@regionalmagazine.co.uk or call me on 0114 250 6300 (Monday to Thursday 9am-5.30pm and Friday 9am-4pm). If you have a business and would like to advertise in Pulse, please call Publishing Manager Helen Wragg on 0114 250 6300 or email Helen.Wragg@regionalmagazine.co.uk. You can also follow us on Twitter (@PulseRMC) or read Pulse (and the rest of Regional Magazine Company’s titles) online at www.regionalmagazine.co.uk.

his time of year signals that summer is well and truly over, as the temperature starts to drop and students settle back into school or university. But rather than despairing about going back to reality, why not take some escapist inspiration from the academic world? From archaeologists to anthropologists, study is often linked to exploration and the gathering of objects. Create your own world of wonders by giving your décor a vintage explorer twist. Think old globes, worn suitcases and hints of botany and entomology in the form of plant prints and butterfly motifs. Embrace your inner Indiana Jones and inject some adventure into your home.

PULSEHOUSE & HOME
A FRESH LOOK If you’re looking to give your home a makeover or even move to a new property, these local businesses can help. SWAG At this furniture clearance warehouse in Darnall, you won’t find a glamorous showroom. Neither will you find a team of intimidating salesmen in shiny suits. Instead, you’ll find a huge furniture clearance warehouse stacked with mountains of good quality, great value, branded furniture. The warehouse covers two acres and has up to 2,000 pieces of furniture, including over 100 different beds and bed frames, over 200 sofas, 50 TV stands, 70 dining sets and over 100 ready-made wardrobes. Their stock is predominantly solid oak wood and factory made, meaning it is much stronger than flat-packed sets. And because all their furniture is already made up and in stock, they specialise in next day deliveries right to your door. All their furniture is end-of-season stock from department stores and well-known outlets, so you get high-quality products that are excellent value for money.
Bumford Heating Ltd Is your home ready for winter? Bumfords have produced this handy guide to help you keep warm, snug and safe. 1 Get your boiler serviced by a Gas Safe or OFTEC registered company, such as Bumfords, once a year to ensure it is safe, in proper working order and running as efficiently as possible. 2 Upgrade your heating controls as they make a big difference to your comfort and energy usage. If you have old heating controls, now is a great time to upgrade before the onset of winter. 3 Ensure the pipes in your loft have been adequately insulated to prevent freezing in the cold weather. 4 Test your boiler and central heating works now so you can rest assured that, when the weather turns cold, your boiler won't let you down. 5 If you have an oil boiler, make sure that you have topped up your oil storage tank ready for the winter. 6 Close curtains at dusk to help keep the warmth in and the cold out.

If your double glazing has become misty, you may think that the only solution is to fork out for a new frame as well as new glass. But Sheffield Glazing is pleased to say that this isn’t necessary as they fit the latest energy efficient glass into existing frames of any size. With more than 30 years’ experience in the industry, Sheffield Glazing’s owner Graham Warsop certainly knows his stuff when it comes to all things glazing. Having worked on both the manufacturing and installation sides of the business – now specialising in installation – he knows this industry inside out and is proud to offer fantastic products at very reasonable prices. Sue Woodcock (far left) with some of the 35 volunteers who run Ecclesfield Library
THE BOOK BRIGADE Volunteers stepped in to save Ecclesfield Library from closure. Stephanie Burns finds out how they are safeguarding its future. n September 2013, Sheffield City Council announced it would close 15 of the city’s 28 community libraries – including Ecclesfield – after government spending cuts forced them to axe £1.6m from the library budget. But, after 600 volunteers came forward and offered to keep the services running, all 15 have remained open. Around 35 people make up the Friends of Ecclesfield Library (FoEL), initially a campaign group founded by Rose Tanner to protest against the closure, and for the last year they have had complete responsibility for the running of the library. FoEL’s mission statement sums up their aims: ‘Our commitment is to keep a library service available for Ecclesfield and the surrounding area, and to provide additional complementary activities to benefit the health and well-being of the whole community’. The council pledged three years of funding assistance but, with running costs of around £7,000 a year, and plans to improve the existing toilets and introduce a disabled loo, substantially more is needed to fulfil their aim of providing an all-age learning facility with access for all. As a result, a significant part of FoEL’s role is fundraising and a series of events and activities have been held to raise not just money, but awareness too. Proceeds from wellattended events such as the Mad Hatters tea party on 30 July, which celebrated the 150th anniversary of Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland,

and the 1940s-themed VE event on 16 May, have been ploughed straight back into the library. Clearly, this place is about so much more than just books, as volunteer Sue Woodcock explains: “The library is a valuable information resource centre for all ages – it is run by the community, for the community, and we strive to offer things that will get people engaged.” One of the ways they’re doing this is with a regular series of tenweek iPad and tablet courses. The current course, which takes place each Thursday 10am-12noon and is charged at £60, is already half way through but those interested in joining the next one can ask at the desk for information. Along with computers and free WiFi, the library is committed to helping the local community who otherwise may not have access to digital resources. According to a health and well-being profile carried out by Sheffield City Council in 2012, more than 11 per cent of Ecclesfield residents are over the age of 75. And the latest figures from the Office for National Statistics state that 86 per cent of households in Great Britain – that’s 22.5 million homes – have internet access. That means 14 per cent, which equates to over 3.6 million households, do not. “We’re in between Chapeltown, Firth Park and Parson Cross, all of which have libraries, but there are a lot of elderly people in Ecclesfield who rely on these local services,” says Sue. “Not everybody has the internet and it’s vitally important in these socially-exclusive days that

people are offered both traditional and digital options.” But it’s not just the older generation or those without internet access at home who have come to rely on this local facility. Ecclesfield children also make good use of the library and almost 50 young readers took part in this year’s summer reading challenge during the six-week holiday. A yellow sticker system, which offers new releases and popular reads, now has more than 800 books and continues to grow thanks to high-quality donations from the community. A huge audit will soon take place to remove unpopular titles – there are around 2,000 books which have never been taken out – OPENING TIMES and make room for books that people really want to read. Monday 1-6pm Of course, all of this requires manpower. “We’re asking people to offer all the support they can,” Wednesday says Sue. “There are plenty of other ways to support the 10am-5.30pm library; you can help out with activities, bake a cake for Friday 10am-5.30pm an event or help in lots of other ways. We’re currently Saturday looking for people to do some gardening, put posters up 9.30am-12.30pm around the village, do house keeping, help out with DIY, do some marketing, or offer IT support.” If you have a business and would like to support the volunteers, are looking for a venue to put on your own event, or simply want to register as a member, you are very welcome. “Even if someone wants to simply come along and do a jigsaw, or have a coffee and a chat, we’re here for them,” says Sue. “It’s a social community hub and we are open to all.”
An evening with Howard Middleton Wednesday 25 November, 7.30pm Tickets £5, available from the library in advance or on the night. Howard talks about his life’s journey in baking, including his appearance on The Great British Bake Off. Student flashmob surprises shoppers Shoppers in the Alhambra shopping centre were in for an unexpected surprise when 55 young people from Barnsley College burst into a choreographed dance routine. The group of performing arts students posed as unassuming shoppers dotted around the centre foyer before launching into a well-rehearsed dance routine as Pharrell Williams’ ‘Happy’ played out through the shopping centre’s sound system. The idea came about after Barnsley College and the Alhambra looked at ways in which students could get involved with the centre’s Barnsley Fashion Week event. Performing arts course leader Donna Turner was thrilled with the students’ performance. She said: “We thought this would be a great opportunity for our students to work together at the beginning of the new term and do something fun whilst building their confidence. They were absolutely fabulous and got a welldeserved round of applause from appreciative shoppers.” The flashmob was just one activity planned during the week, with students also standing as live mannequins, modelling outfits for featured stores and designers in shop windows.

Direct Kitchens sets up Sheffield bout! Direct Kitchens of Ecclesfield has supplied Hillsborough-based Sheffield Boxing Centre with a new boxing ring canvas and corner pads so members can train using the best facilities possible. The boxing centre has been running for 20 years and is owned by sports legend Glyn Rhodes MBE. He said: “I have known Carl Vigrass of Direct Kitchens for seven years, when he started training here, and since then he has been a great advocate for us. The new equipment means the world to all our members and they all get excited about being able to train on such a stylish canvas – it really does bring the best out of them.” Carl said: “Glyn is a true inspiration to hundreds of Sheffield kids, some that haven’t necessarily had the best start in life. They come to the gym with nothing and they leave with aspirations and dreams. If this new equipment helps him and his team continue to inspire the city’s future talent for many more years to come, it has been worth every penny!” The Sheffield Boxing Centre’s website is at www.sheffieldboxingcentre.co.uk. PULSEEATING OUT
Words: Phoebe Seymour
THE WHOLE PACKAGE Drink, dance and dine... Cubana offers the ultimate night out. f there’s one thing Cuba knows best, it’s how to throw a good party. Home to salsa dancing, rum and a cultural fusion of cuisines, the best of this nation is all under one roof – in Sheffield. My last trip to Cubana was when it was still on Trippet Lane, so I was excited to sample the tapas and cocktails at their relatively new home in Leopold Square. Cubana has been at this stylish location for almost a year and if the busy downstairs bar and booked-up restaurant upstairs are anything to go by, the move has been a raving success. Absorbing the colourful, courtyard-style setting, my partner and I got our Friday fiesta started with a Brazilian Mojito, made with sugarcane spirit cachaça instead of rum, and a Verry Berry Jerry cocktail, made with Sailor Jerry and fruity Chambord. The tapas menu had a guide for helping you decide how many dishes to go for. Deciding we were “hungry” on the scale, we went with four each. After sharing a Pan de Ajo Calentito (garlic bread), I tucked into the Gambas Pil Pil (prawns in garlic and olive oil), Patatas Dulces y Pimientos (roasted sweet potatoes and red peppers), Pincho Verduras (grilled Mediterranean vegetable skewer) and the Chorizo y Huevo con Patatas (chorizo and potatoes topped with a fried egg). Try saying all that after a few cocktails! The prawns were juicy with a buttery flavour, whilst my mountain of sweet potatoes was balanced by spicy chilli. The marinated vegetable skewer, including blackened aubergines and courgettes, had

a lemony tang, whilst the chorizo and potatoes dipped in the fried egg reminded me of a fried breakfast with a Spanish twist. All together, this was an exciting and varied feast full of many flavours. My partner had the Mozzarella y Jamón (buffalo mozzarella wrapped in Parma ham), Salteado de Champiñones al Ajillo (sautéed mixed mushrooms with garlic and chilli), Pincho de Pollo (grilled chicken skewer) and the Pollo y Chorizo (chicken and chorizo in a creamy tomato sauce). He especially enjoyed the mascarponestyle sauce on his chicken and chorizo and the portions of mozzarella wrapped in ham, comparing them to “cheese-filled pigs in blankets”. I had a mouthful of the chicken skewer, which was barbecued to perfection. My partner had the raspberry cheesecake to finish – a great recommendation by our waiter Stuart – whilst I had the decadent chocolate cake with moist layers of chocolate and fudge. My partner washed this down with a Brazilian liqueur coffee with kahlua and fiery brandy, whilst I had the smoother Cuban liqueur coffee with dark rum. By this point, a man was serenading diners with his saxophone and the party was just getting started downstairs with people swaying to traditional salsa and Latino club tunes. Owner Adrian’s ethos is “about providing the whole package when it comes to a night out”. With a gorgeous menu, exciting cocktails and regular live music events, Cubana sure does deliver.

COMPLETE KITCHEN & BEDROOM SOLUTIONS
From a replacement worktop to a whole new kitchen or bedroom, there’s no job too small for CKB. aving traded out of 133 Middlewood Road for over six years now, the Sheffield public are becoming well aware of the high quality, bespoke service on offer at Complete Kitchens and Bedroom Solutions. Owned by Scott Webster, CKB offer a complete kitchen and bedroom service alongside the capability of anything from removing walls to building extensions. Scott said: “When you come to us you really do get everything. Building work, electrics, plastering, decoration, fitting, flooring – this is a one-stop-shop.” But just because Scott and his team can perform complete renovations, that doesn’t mean that they have to. CKB understand that not everybody can afford top to bottom renovations at this moment in time so are more than happy to work on anything from replacing a single kitchen unit upwards. “I can do eight metres of worktop and a new sink and tap for £950 or a whole kitchen or bedroom – so people can have whatever they can budget for,” said Scott. “And if you have your own electrician or plumber that you would like to use then you are more than welcome to do so. We will do as little or as much as you wish.” A feature of CKB which sets it apart from many of its competitors is that it manufactures everything on site, giving it a bespoke service. This means it can cater to any needs or desires. Scott employs a close team of dedicated workers including a registered electrician, and plumber, as well as qualified plasterer, brick layers and window fitters, who are all contracted to CKB. Gloss doors particularly in white and cream are in vogue at the current time. This gives a room a fresh appearance and Scott has seen requests for this design boom.
H
Consequently Scott is offering deals on an Astro white and cream gloss – check in at the showroom or give him a call for more deals. Scott doesn’t Mr and Mrs Carter, S20 believe in such gimmicks as Fitted April 2015 offering customers ten per cent off their total bill though. “These are often used to pull the wool over people’s eyes. I offer competitive prices from the word go.” Should you contact CKB, Scott will come out to view your home for a free appointment. The visit normally lasts for an hour depending on job size. “I don’t give quotes off-the-cuff. I am meticulous when it comes to pricing, so post-appointment I will go through everything and provide an accurate, itemised and fair quote.” Scott is the initial point of contact for customers and he not only designs his work but does the fitting too. Once Scott has committed to a job he dedicates all his time to it from inception to completion. He guarantees that he will not be working on multiple projects at one time and is even willing to turn down work to be able to do this. “My customers like to know that I will always be there and that they have my undivided attention. That is the least they deserve and will get when they come to me.” As such his customers can contact him 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Doors and worktops are guaranteed for a decade but for extra peace of mind Scott ensures that payment comes in instalments and that the full fee is not paid until the job has been completed satisfactorily. For a company that will provide your home with undivided, specialist and bespoke attention, give CKB a call today!

Marie-Jo Tilda
Wedding attire doesn’t stop with the dress…here are Lace’s tips for brides to be.
f you’re taking the plunge and getting married soon, it’s time to think about your lingerie. Because your perfect day (and night) requires the perfect lingerie set. These lingerie tips will ensure you look totally stunning in that gorgeous wedding dress and totally irresistible when everyone else has gone home and there’s just the two of you alone. It’s a simple but fundamental rule for brides: the dress comes first, then the lingerie. If you’ve already found the dress or outfit of your dreams take it with you to the lingerie boutique or take photos and swatches to show to the lingerie specialist. That will ensure you find the perfect lingerie to go with your wedding dress. The cut is the most important factor: under a bustier dress you wear a strapless bra, under an extra tight one you’ll prefer sensual control briefs. Matching the fabric of your lingerie to that of your dress is the super-stylish thing to do. If you’ve chosen a frock with a lot of lace or embroidery, choose luxurious lingerie like Céline’s fabulous push-up with that chic retro lace. Under a fine plain fabric it’s better to choose smooth lingerie that does not show under clothing, like Tilda’s sensual glossy bras and briefs or Divine’s ultra smooth lingerie. White is still a classic – in fact it’s trendier than ever. Perfect under a wedding dress in off-white or a soft champagne tint. What about the crispy white of classic Avero, Romy’s romantic white lace or Aurora’s elegant floral embroidery with silver sparkle... now that’s love at first sight. If you’ve gone for a white dress in a light fabric, choose a set in a lovely pastel that does not show through. Like a dress with a sensual neckline? Go for it, but do take care when choosing your bra. There are various styles to choose from. Ask for the lingerie stylist to help you find the one that flatters you most. A balcony bra shows off some of your upper breasts, for instance – some versions also offer an extra deep plunge. It’s hard to enjoy yourself when your lingerie looks so good, but feels so annoyingly uncomfortable. Lingerie that looks good and fits perfectly is an absolute must, especially when you plan to finish the party on the dance floor. Thankfully, the time when you had to grin and bear it is gone, because even shapewear is so comfy these days that you can party all
I
night long. Try the Marie-Jo Celine Couture, Jane and Robbie briefs and bodies or the A La Folie sets. Never worn a sensual bustier, a dress with lace or super sexy garters, just because it’s so damn sexy? It’s now or never. Fingers crossed, you’ll only have one wedding day, so you owe it to yourself to take it to the max. If there’s one occasion when you can demand the very best, this is it. Don’t compromise, go for the best lingerie you can get for under your dream dress. There’s a perfect style for every figure, a perfect cut for every outfit and a perfect colour for every complexion. A professional lingerie specialist will guide you every step of the way: from size to style and colour. Don’t be shy: ask for advice and don’t accept second best! PROMOTIONKIP McGRATH
Is your child a happy learner or a coasting kid who is not making progress? hat can parent’s evenings tell you? Here are some suggestions from my experiences as a parent and a teacher. My first concern is happiness. Happy children are better learners and, if they look forward to school, there are fewer issues with getting them up on a morning. Your child’s attitude to learning is also key to success. Reluctant learners usually struggle and dislike particular subjects. Those who give 100 per cent present no concerns. The group often missed are coasting children who appear to do well but are not actually trying. We focus a great deal on academic attainment, but social skills are also important. What is school able to do if your child struggles to make friends? Does your child contribute in class? If not, this can be due to lack of confidence or a sign that they are not trying. Check progress and attainment more carefully in areas your child is not as keen on, especially if they are core subjects such as maths, English and the sciences. Each child has individual strengths and weaknesses. Examples may be poor punctuation in writing or struggling with division. Are you aware of your child’s specific abilities and areas for development? Is your child at the expected level? Schools are now reporting for each year in terms of emerging, expected and
W
46 PULSE MAGAZINE
exceeding (or broadly similar terms). In October it may be expected that an average child is emerging in their year group. Below this would be a concern as would an able child who is only at the emerging level. Do you know how much homework is set and how long it should take? Ask the teacher to clarify any areas you are unclear of to yourself and to your child. Parent’s evening should give a clear picture of your child at school. Aim to form a working relationship with the school and keep communication open; it doesn’t have to be reserved for parent’s evenings. If something is bothering you, do not ignore it; talk to the school. If you have been to parent’s evening and are concerned that your child could do with extra help in maths or English, give us a call on 01142 570 777.
