Celebrating

50 YEARS IN BUSINESS At the Heating Installer Awards 2018 – We won the 2018 Heating Installer of the year for Yorkshire & the North East

Our engineer, Craig, performing a Power Flush at a local property Our working showroom in Hoyland S74 9LH

We are proud to support local causes. This is the Ecclesfield Red Rose JFC team that we sponsor

It was a year that changed history, 1968 was a year of seismic social and political change across the globe. It was also the year that a plumber from Sheffield decided to make a go of it himself. And so Bumford Heating was born. Chris Bumford started the business, from humble beginnings in their spare bedroom in Wincobank. He installed his first boiler that same year, and never looked back. Now run by Chris’ son Neil, the company goes from strength to strength in its fiftieth year.

Amadou, our French apprentice working at a local property

“We are incredibly proud of this milestone” says Neil. “It can be difficult to know which company to trust in your home. I think the reason Bumfords is still here is that we value honesty and integrity, and we get the job done at a fair price. And now with over 50 years of recommendations under our belt, people see us as a trustworthy family firm.” Whether you are looking for a new boiler, heating system upgrade, new controls, plumbing or bathroom work, repairs or servicing - why not contact one of the friendly team at Bumfords.

Get into the seasonal spirit with this Halloween Harvest wreath from www.interflora.co.uk.

Autumn shades AS SUMMER FADES AWAY BRING THE NEW SEASON’S WARM TONES INTO YOUR HOME, SAYS PHOEBE SEYMOUR hat is there not to like about autumn? Yes – the nights are longer, but with crisp leaves in gorgeous hues of oranges, yellows and browns, there are plenty of warm colours around to brighten our days and inspire our homes. Bring the autumnal look indoors with leaf prints and warm shades, especially those items we tend to use more in the colder months such as thick blankets and teapots. If you are wanting to add a subtle touch of the season to your home, autumnal foliage and plants make for perfect centrepieces on tables, while wreaths with pumpkin detailing, can be kept hung up long after Halloween without looking dated. Love it or hate it, autumn is here. But don’t worry if you’re not keen on leaving the house; indoors is the new outdoors.

DEAR PARISHIONERS

My colleagues and I hope that you had a great summer. It is a great privilege for me to be elected Chairman of Bradfield Parish Council. The past four months have been a busy round of attending events across the parish and with fellow councillors dealing with important parish business particularly related to planning matters. First however on the behalf of all the councillors I would like to send our best wishes for a speedy and full recovery to our colleague Cllr Victoria Talbot who was our chairperson last year. Victoria was taken very seriously ill when presenting the Council’s Citizen Awards at our meeting in May. She has asked me to say how disappointed and really sorry she was at not being able to complete the ceremony and again thanks and wishes all the award recipients well hoping that they and their families understand. 2018 will be a landmark year for our nation. Perhaps in one hundred years from now the ins and outs and the rights and wrongs of BREXIT will have assumed a proper perspective in our history. But then and now this year, people will all remember and reflect on the great sacrifices made by millions of our fellow citizens and those of other nations as we mark in November the centenary of the end of the Great War. Parishioners and Bradfield Parish Council will be marking the centenary by supporting again the magnificent Poppy Memorial Trail

which illuminated the exterior of St Nicholas’ Church at High Bradfield in 2016. We will be supporting events arranged by the Dungworth, Bradfield and District Heritage Group and making our own memorial for the Parish by planting English Oak trees and placing memorial benches in Coronation Park, Oughtibridge and in the Council’s sports field at Dungworth Green. These will complement the planting of an English Oak Tree in Stannington Park by the City Council as part of the City’s tribute. Our planting ceremonies are planned for November the 12th (CP) and the 14th (DG) at 11am. I hope that many of you will be able to join us on one of those occasions. Remembering past sacrifices can have the effect of bring communities together for the greater good. The Parish Council hopes that in 2018 with our partners we will be successful in our Heritage Lottery Fund bid for the Sheffield Lakeland Landscape Project. Our hopes and aspirations for this were reported my predecessor Cllr Victoria Talbot in the SIXER’s September 2017 edition.

WORRALL GALA

STANNINGTON CARNIVAL One of the high spots of the Council year is attendance at the Bradfield Festival of Music in June. Over the years it has grown in stature as an event of international significance. This year’s festival was outstanding. My wife and I were delighted to be invited and to represent the Parish Council at the opening event. A choral evening with the Albion Choir and the opportunity to congratulate award winning Sheffield flautist Sarah Roberts and violinist Thomas Beauchamp both with extraordinary musical talents in the wonderful setting of St. Nicholas’ Church. My thanks to all who work throughout the year to achieve the Festival’s success.

O

Summer in Bradfield Parish is busy with community events. The photo montage is my attempt to capture some moments in the brilliant sunshine of this summer. In Oughtibridge it was a Wild West theme and escorted by Tim O’Connell an opportunity for me to meet many residents, stall holders and friends. In Stannington it was a privilege for me to meet a young and talented local business man, Nathan Hill and together for us to perform the opening ceremony of the Carnival. I was pleased to meet two regular attendees from Sheffield but who now live in London. These Chelsea Pensioners, John Hellewell and John Riley in their scarlet coats and with their bucket rattling reminded us all of the work of the Royal British Legion and of the centenary we will remember in November. I would like to thank the very talented local artists who presented a remarkable and varied palette of subjects in the exhibition of their work in Stannington Church. Once again an occasion to meet and talk with old friends. The students from Bradfield School made my day at the Worrall Gala and Festival with packets of chocolate fudge. Although I know the event was successful the organisers could not have foreseen that at 3.00pm on that day England were to kick off against Columbia in the World Cup and that it would impact on visitor numbers for a while. Inevitably in a busy calendar, events clash, and so it was that I was not able to attend the Garden Party at Wharnciffe Side. However my colleague Cllr Stephen Bennett was there and as the picture suggests people were fishing for much needed funds to improve the Community Centre as well as having a great afternoon. Broomhead Show is something different. In a beautiful setting above Broomhead reservoir in the upper Ewden Valley in warm sunshine, with music by the Deepcar Brass Band and the availability of ice cream what more could one need. Well for the tough ones who ran the Ewden Valley sky line cross country race it must have been pain. I really enjoyed all the events I attended. I would like to thank and commend the various groups and organisers who give up their time to make these events the annual success they are and for the contribution they make to the life of Bradfield Parish. Memory lane has been one aspect of my chairmanship to date. I was really pleased to re visit and dine with the members of Oughtibridge Lunch Club in the Zion Church. Cutting the cake at the launch meal of the Club back in 2000 was a privilege I had then, as Sara Millard and her team of volunteers reminded me. There are approximately 22 members mainly Sara Millard 3rd from the right and her volunteers

from Oughtibridge and Wharncliffe Side and 10 volunteers, who are on a rota. We celebrated the birthday of one of the ladies and chatted about village life. There was much concern about accidents on Low Rd. and comment about the Parish Council’s current survey on the possible future enhancements to Coronation Park. An excellent lunch with really nice people and chocolate cake! Thank you all. In August I visited the Oughtibridge Some members enjoying lunch Allotment Society and met Liz Hewett the Society’s Secretary. Liz has written this little snap shot in to history which I think you will enjoy and it reminds me of other successful partnerships in which the Parish Council engages for example, Action for Stannington and the Steel Valley Partnership. Liz writes, “It is exactly ten years since the allotment site was created off Church Street in Oughtibridge. The land was given by Bradfield Parish Council and a group of local enthusiasts began work throughout the soggy winter of 2008/9 to turn a muddy field (often reaching to the top of your wellies) into something that would give us food, flowers and a lot of happiness. Since then the allotment site has been an important part of our village. Quite a few people have tried their hand at vegetable growing with us. Some have moved on but many have stayed the course and are now reaping their tenth harvest. We’ve had wet years where the water bubbles up through

OUT & ABOUT OUGHTIBRIDGE GALA the crops and years, like this one just gone, where there was no rain at all; we’ve had pigeons, rabbits and the occasional pheasant come visiting; but mainly we’ve had a lot of healthy produce and a lot of fun. There’s a good community spirit on site and everyone comes together to snip, dig or build on workdays throughout the year, or to barbecue at the end of a long day’s work. We’re grateful to Steel Valley Project for help on site and to BradďŹ eld Parish Council for its support and many donations of time and money. But most of all we’re grateful to all the allotmenteers over the past ten years who have made the site the beautiful place it is today. Here’s to another ten years!â€? In September together with Cllr. Bennett, Cllrs Peter and Mavis Butler and the small congregation of local residents we enjoyed at the medieval Church of St. James in Midhopestones a celebration of the gift of water in the Blessing of the Potters Well and St James’ Well. The service was conducted by Steve and Ian from the Penistone and Thurlstone Team Ministry and made complete by locally prepared refreshments. This year again the church and the area reverberated to the music of the Loxley Silver Band. I would like to say thank you to By the Potter’s Well, Midhopestones. everyone involved in making this a memorable occasion. The Sheffield and Rotherham Wildlife Trust is a partner with the Parish Council. The Trust manages a number of important nature

reserves in our area. Carr House Take a Walk on the Wild Side Meadows close to Brightholmlee at Wharncliffe Side is an unassuming jewel in our natural riches. Council members attend public consultation meetings, one of which took place in August, about its ongoing management and Rachel Stevenson a Community Wildlife Ranger writes below about the reserve. “Carr House Meadows is a remnant of the wildower-rich hay meadows and pastures that were once common in the countryside. The nature Common Spotted reserve offers a wonderful opportunity for people Orchid to experience a taste of the past, in a traditionally managed landscape seemingly untouched by modern agriculture, and preserved for future generations to enjoy. A visit to the site in June will show a wonderful display of wildowers including orchids, ox eye daisy, knapweed, yellow rattle and red clover to name but a few. Many of these species are declining nationally as hay meadows are lost from the landscape. Additionally, it supports a diverse fungal community and a variety of bird species. The reserve is designated as a Local Wildlife Site under the Sheffield Plan and includes a number of public footpaths which give access to the site and connect it with the wider Rights of Way network. Carr House is a great site to visit and is really peaceful and relaxing. Please take any litter home with you and take any dog faeces off site and dispose of correctly. COUNCIL NOTES The business of the council is conducted via its standing committees. I am pleased to note that the independent internal auditor has once again given the council a “clean bill of healthâ€? in respect of our management of your money raised through the precept which is part of your council tax. The budget we have set for 2018 /19 for grants for projects by eligible parish applicants, which is a really simple application process, is still available. If the Lakeland Landscape bid to the Heritage Lottery Fund is successful there will be additional community grants available for projects that meet the relevant criteria. This could be your organisation’s opportunity and challenge. The Council’s Land and Premises committee portfolio includes the management and maintenance of our Coronation Park in Oughtibridge and recreation spaces in Storrs and Dungworth as well as the picnic area by the bridge in Low BradďŹ eld. These great places have been extremely busy throughout the summer. I would like to take this opportunity to thank our staff who look after these “jewelsâ€? of the parish for the exceptional work they do on our behalf. I would also thank the Friends of Coronation Park and the Oughtibridge Gala Committee for the very signiďŹ cant contribution they make to community engagement with the parish council in this endeavour. In the areas of transport and of highways issues your Council liaises with the traffic management team at the City Council to address for example the accident black spot at the junction of Bridge Hill with Orchard St. in the Oughtibridge one way system and with AMEY to resolve problems like the one, now ďŹ xed, depicted in the photo. Your help by reporting issues is invaluable. Members attend the quarterly meetings of the Sheffield Transport Users Group. Raising issues there did reinforce the concerns raised by residents and local city councillors for improvements to the bus services that were put in place to cover the closure of the Manchester Road between Wharncliffe Side and Deepcar during the summer.

Planning and development proposals within the Parish are an important aspect of councillor’s activity and the Council is a statutory consultee on planning applications to both Sheffield and the Peak District National Park planning authorities. Earlier this year we urged the National Park Authority to ensure that much needed affordable housing was included in the redevelopment of the former Low BradďŹ eld Water Filter plant. The need for affordable and / or starter homes to be in the mix for new homes proposed for sites at Oughtibridge Mill and land off Oughtibridge Lane were part of the Parish Council’s response to those applications. Particularly we also supported the concerns of many local people to have included in the latter development a solution for the safe crossing for pedestrians and cyclists over the Cars speeding over the narrow railway railway. The developments bridge on Oughtibridge Lane will bring a considerable increase in both pedestrians and traffic along this lane and the bridge, which at present have no footway provision. The Mill site development will go ahead and the planning authority has obtained a ÂŁ1.75M sum in lieu of affordable housing provision but there is no guarantee it will be delivered on that site. Determinations have not yet been made and discussions continue concerning the Oughtibridge Lane sites. Very recently the Parish Council has supported the Hillsborough Golf Club’s wish to develop its golďŹ ng provision but have objected to the present application because of our concerns about the proposed delivery to site of some 182,000 cu m of site ďŹ lling material. In May 2019 there will be elections for the 13 Parish Council seats. If you are minded to give some of your time to this civic responsibility and want to know more why not come and observe at our council meetings or contact us, details below.

When business gets personal – succession planning for owners MANY BUSINESS OWNERS FIND THE WHOLE QUESTION OF SUCCESSION PLANNING TOO DAUNTING TO CONTEMPLATE. BUT THE DEATH OF A BUSINESS OWNER WILL INVARIABLY GIVE RISE TO SOME TOUGH CHALLENGES FOR THE BUSINESS. any business owners find the whole question of succession planning too daunting to contemplate. The process can be difficult, particularly where someone isn’t ready to retire. But the death of a business owner will invariably give rise to some tough challenges for the business, so it is important to make appropriate plans for the inevitable. The ‘head in the sand’ approach, and the potential dangers of inadequate planning and advice, could lead to family fallout further down the line. In a worst case scenario, it could place the entire future of the business in serious jeopardy and lead to protracted litigation.

M

Succession Strategies

If you are a business owner, whether a sole trader, partner, or shareholder in a private company, the first priority is having a Will that implements a suitable succession plan. This is vital to protect both your business and your family. Carefully drafted Will structures, often involving trusts, can help to secure valuable Inheritance Tax (IHT) reliefs and avoid a large tax bill. Early planning is essential to ensure that the business is not too heavily weighted towards investment, so that investment and trading activities are separated with the risk of losing IHT relief. Trusts are often used to make provision for more vulnerable younger family members, where it may be more appropriate for them to receive their inheritance and/or assume control of the business at a later time. Trusts can also ensure that a fair balance is struck between those family members who are involved in the business and those who are

not. Expert advice can bring structure to family conversations and ensure a smooth business transition. Aside from IHT, there will be other tax considerations. Although Capital Gains Tax (CGT) does not apply on death, it is likely to arise on a lifetime transfer of business assets where, for example, an owner opts for a sale or a phased retirement to reduce ownership over a period of time. Where applicable, entrepreneur’s relief can reduce the effective rate of CGT to 10 per cent on any gain crystallised on the gifting or sale of an interest in a business. However, advice and planning are crucial to ensure that lifetime transfers are arranged tax efficiently. Income Tax also comes into play. The rules on taxation of share dividends have changed in recent years and the well-advised owner will want his company profits to be extracted as efficiently as possible. A retirement plan might involve transferring part of the business into a trust that, with careful structuring, will enable the trustees to distribute funds in a way that enables beneficiaries to use their personal dividend allowance (currently £2,000) most effectively. Where there are existing business partners, it is particularly important to have an agreement setting out how they can acquire a deceased owner’s interest. A cross option agreement will do two things: allow partners to acquire the interest (a call option) for an agreed sum, and give beneficiaries the right to require the partners to buy out the interest (a put option). The agreement will invariably be supported by life assurance which ensures that when either option is exercised, enough funds are available.

This gives peace of mind to surviving owners who wish to ensure the continued viability of the business and avoid having family members disrupt the business activites. But it also reassures loved ones that they can receive their inheritance in cash, rather become embroiled in a business they may not understand with partners unable to buy them out. The Price of Procrastination

Many owners put off these crucial discussions because they fear family fallout. But failure to review existing arrangements, and to make plans for the future, is truly a dangerous business. The aspirations of the younger generations may change over time; where initially there may be no obvious successor to the business within the family, over time children and grandchildren may become more involved. Consideration should also be given to how to incentivise other key employees, and how to circumvent potential conflicts of interests between them and future owners of the business. Appropriate planning provides much needed peace of mind for all concerned, and ensures that a business is fit for its next chapter. We can support you, your family and business with important decisions to ensure that your future plans are realised and brought to life. Exploring your options can go a long way and allow you to have clarity, peace of mind, and focus on the important things in life Contact James on 0370 1500 100 Extension: 6809 james.laycock@irwinmitchell.com @WillDisputes_IM www.irwinmitchellprivatewealth.com www.rmcmedia.co.uk 35

WOSSKOW BROWN: WE WILL STOP YOUR WORST CONVEYANCING NIGHTMARE FROM COMING TRUE… any people who have been through the process of buying a house have experienced this certain type of problem. All house buyers have at least dealt with the worry of this issue arising. What if your conveyancer goes on holiday during your transaction? Forget your ghost stories, your undying fear of spiders and your horrifying visions of being chased by a three-headed monster… your conveyancer going on holiday is truly the most terrifying nightmare of them all. Of course, conveyancers have no less right to go on holiday than the rest of us; they work amazingly hard and admirably juggle many transactions at once, tirelessly working to a number of deadlines. The problematic aspect of conveyancers going away is when they don’t inform you of their absence. It is important that they let you know of any planned holidays and their date of return. In fact, the average UK property transaction is completed almost seven weeks over its expected date as a result of

M

conveyancers being absent. Let me set the scene: you’ve not heard from your conveyancer in a few days, but you’re not really worrying, so you just send them a little follow-up email to make sure everything’s okay. You hit the ‘send’ button, only to get an email notification a few seconds later. Subject: ‘Automatic Reply. I’m away on holiday and will return to the office in 12 days’. Your eyes widen, your blood boils and you start to worry about completion. Actually, nightmare is an understatement, isn’t it? Well, the good thing is that you won’t have that problem with us. At Wosskow Brown, we pride ourselves on exceptional client service. We’ll take your worries away and our experienced qualified conveyancers will always let you know when

WE’RE KEY TO BUYING YOUR NEW HOME

they’re going on holiday and we always make sure to provide the most helpful cover. Our conveyancers are brilliant at working in teams and do so on a regular basis. So if the main conveyancer dealing with your transaction is jetting off to Spain for a week, there are plenty of others in the team who are already familiar with the details of your process, meaning that they can pick it up for you and answer any queries you may have. So, what this means is… no nightmares for you! Give the team a call on 0114 230 0166 or drop them an email to hillsborough@wosskowbrown.co.uk.

HEROES

Connecting communities AGE BETTER IN SHEFFIELD IS WORKING TO MAKE OUR CITY A PLACE WE’RE PROUD TO GROW OLD IN. HANNAH THORNTON, COMMUNICATIONS AND TOOLKIT OFFICER, TELLS HANNAH SANDERS HOW THEY’RE TACKLING LONELINESS AND ISOLATION.

y 2040, there will be 18 million people aged 60 or over. Although our longer lives are a great achievement, changes are needed so more people enjoy good health, are financially secure, socially connected and happy in later life. Over the past three years, Age Better in Sheffield has been working with different delivery partners across Sheffield including Soar, Ignite Imaginations and Sheffield Mind to develop a range of projects to help end loneliness and isolation. The project was set-up as part of the national Ageing Better Programme, funded by the Big Lottery Fund and has just reached its halfway point. And, by 2021 in Sheffield they are aiming to empower people to reduce their loneliness with the help of many volunteers

B

and people engaging with Age Better in Sheffield. Hannah Thornton, communications and toolkit officer said: “The whole aim of the project is to reduce loneliness and isolation in Sheffield for those aged 50 and over, along with reaching out to every single person and showing them that we can help build a connected city together. “When South Yorkshire Housing Association (SYHA) heard of the programme we were really keen to bid. As a housing association we know that a home is the place you start, and for us, it isn’t just enough to have a roof over your head – it’s about your wellbeing and quality of life too.” One of the initiatives delivered by SYHA are the neighbour toolkits designed to reach

those who are most isolated, and they’ve already had a fantastic response across the city; with the most recent one being in the Firth Park ward. “We knew we wanted to design and deliver projects with our partners that allow people to connect in their communities, but actually a huge challenge with loneliness and isolation is that you often can’t reach those who need you the most. “The toolkits are designed to go through letterboxes so you go where the people are. We’re reaching people to say ‘we’re here, this is on offer and this is how we can work with you’. The toolkits are all about giving people that lightbulb moment of ‘wow, if that’s what is out there, then I can get involved and change my life’.”

HEROES

Brooke Leigh, programme co-ordinator LiveWell and Adam Batty, programme co-ordinator LiveWell

At the start of the project, research was done to discover the areas of Sheffield that are most likely home to people who are vulnerable, lonely and isolated with each toolkit being shaped to reach the target demographic of the areas. “The toolkits are also about raising awareness and profiling the message behind the project – ‘we are better if we are connected. Community spirit and neighbourliness doesn’t have to be a thing of the past and everyone has a role to play to combat loneliness and isolation’.” So far, they have created three toolkits: Burngreave, Beauchief and Greenhill and Firth Park. From a giant newspaper translated into different languages through to a pizzalike box filled with goodies designed to treat the area like a holiday spot, each toolkit is completely unique and co-designed with the people who live in the area “Our most recent toolkit is an A4 envelope and features a whiteboard that’s a weekly planner, a fridge magnet and pen along with a map of the area. The idea is that people will look at the map, see the highlighted community places, be inspired to go out and then use the weekly planner to choose things to do that week. “We also wanted to give people examples of individuals in their area that are already out there – offer up a bit of inspiration and empowerment for them to do the same. So, we created a pack of postcards that champion individuals across the ward including those

that have gone through community services and are now volunteers to young students championing community spirit and social cohesion.” The work of the toolkits doesn’t stop there, as the Age Better in Sheffield team organise a range of events alongside to give those in the community the opportunity to come and meet with them and ask any questions. And, for the first time, the team decided it wasn’t just enough to have the events so they chose to hand-deliver the toolkits in the community. “We wanted to be involved in the delivery process this time, so went out to the ward. It was just fantastic and an amazing chance to get stuck in with the community. We even gatecrashed an aerobics class – they we’re delighted to see us – to show them the toolkit and they were all so willing and excited to get involved. “It’s so important for us to get out there and have those conversations. Sometimes the toolkit on its own may not be enough but if you are

able to have a chat with someone, get in touch before the event and give them the confidence to come along, why wouldn’t you? – it’s about going that extra mile,” adds Hannah. “I think the toolkits are a fantastic first step towards encouraging the local community to help combat loneliness and isolation. It’s important we help empower, provide knowledge and support and offer up ideas on how people can help. “Loneliness and isolation is killing people. The health impact that it has on an individual basis is just staggering, so it’s key we work towards eradicating it to the best of our ability. When it comes to helping reduce loneliness, it’s important for people to remember that a little thing like saying hello in the street can really make a big difference. Simply put, just remind people that you see them and you’re there.” Over the upcoming three years, Age Better in Sheffield will be working towards launching their final toolkit in the Woodhouse ward. “In terms of ideas for this, the world really is our oyster. We want to do something really unique that of course still fits through a letterbox, but already my cogs are turning. I would say though, if anyone has any ideas on what you would like to receive then please share them with us.” For anyone looking for more information on the toolkits, other projects surrounding Age Better in Sheffield or volunteering opportunities visit www.agebettersheff.co.uk or call 0114 2900 250.

Are you prepared? WRITE YOUR WILL NOW AND HELP SHEFFIELD CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL TO CONTINUE ITS VITAL WORK.

Dear Reader, s a mum of two I am constantly prepared with a snack or a spare piece of clothing! We all plan for the day, week, special occasions but how many of us are prepared for the future? That’s why I’m writing to you today. My daughter Matilda is three years old and my son Ailbe has just turned 18 months old. They keep me on my toes but I know I'm very lucky. I think about their next birthday and look back at pictures of when they were born. The future seems very far away and isn't something I am prepared for, it’s not on my list of priorities but I know it is inevitable. I don't know what my children will become but I hope they will feel loved. When the time comes, I want to help other families from all walks of life, as they’ll need the help of Sheffield Children's Hospital too. Some of these children are probably not even born yet

A

48 www.rmcmedia.co.uk

but could be our future doctors, teachers, leaders and of course a twinkle in their parents’ eye. Working at The Children's Hospital Charity I've met families who have had their worlds turned upside down. It's a testament to our hospital that these families always remember the incredible care they've received. You really don't appreciate until you really need it. I’ll be honest, I keep putting off writing a will but now seems as good time to finally get it done. I’ll definitely be writing one this year and I hope you’ll join me in leaving a legacy that will help generations to come. Thank you for your time,

Katie PS: Irwin Mitchell offer a discount will writing service if you are thinking of writing a will and they’ll make an immediate donation too.

Local lads’ skate park success The determination of four teenagers from Grenoside was celebrated at the official opening of a brand new £60,000 skate and scoot park. After six years of hard work, effort and fundraising, plus support from Sheffield City Council and funding from Sport England, Lewis, Harry, Kiran and Jacob were joined by local MTB champion Steve Peat to test out the new ramps. The new skate park is suitable for all wheeled users such as balance bikes, scooters, skateboards, BMX bikes and roller blades. The park was officially opened with a ribbon cutting by Deputy Lord Mayor Cllr Tony Downing and Councillor Mary Lea, plus councillors and officers from Sheffield Parks and Countryside service. Staff from The House Skate Park also came along to give a coaching session. The Friends of Grenoside Park was established in 2012 after the four lads identified that vital improvements were needed. The group were supported by Sheffield City Council to raise money to complete the maintenance work, before Sport England contributed £28,000 match funding to make the boys’ skate park dream a reality. The skate park was designed and built by local track experts from Bike Track. It is open to people of all ages and abilities, all year round.

How to find ‘the one’ for you ZOE LEWIS, JEWELLER AND GEMMOLOGIST AT PA JEWELLERY, HAS SOME TOP TIPS FOR CHOOSING WEDDING RINGS. hen choosing your wedding rings, the options can seem endless and selecting the one that’s right for you can appear a daunting task. However, considering a few key factors before you start can make it easier to find ‘the one’ that you can love forever.

W

TIMESCALE

Make sure you allow plenty of time to choose your rings and have them made. There are hundreds of styles to choose from, so it can take a while to decide and you’ll be more relaxed if you aren’t in a hurry. Our customers often find it helpful to have a first look well in advance of the big day before making a final decision later. Although most of our rings take 3-4 weeks to order, some bespoke designs can take longer. We recommend allowing a minimum of twice as much time to avoid unnecessary worry. EXPECTATIONS

Do you want to wear your ring all the time? How important is it to you that the ring you choose now can be worn for a lifetime? Our experienced team can help you find a design that is both practical and beautiful, advising on how different materials wear and what upkeep designs require. For instance, choosing a ring made from titanium or steel may mean you cannot have it resized if your fingers change in the future, while a diamond set band will need additional maintenance over the years to ensure your diamonds are securely set. Taking expert advice and making an informed decision now will help you enjoy your rings for many anniversaries to come. ENGAGEMENT RING

Most brides wear their wedding ring next to

their engagement ring and a neat fit is increasingly a key factor in their choice of design. Modern engagement rings are often designed to sit next to a wedding band, but some designs, especially twist or cluster styles, may require a shaped ring. There are lots of solutions available, from bespoke ‘made-to-fit’ designs to pre-existing wishbone or ‘bow-shaped’ styles. If you won’t be wearing your engagement ring all the time, consider how the wedding ring will look on its own as well. Trying examples on is the best way of seeing what will work and is another reason for getting started early.

PA Jewellery The Old Bank, 23 Commonside, Sheffield, S10 1GD Tel: 0114 266 9253 www.pajewellery.com

STYLE

This is the fun part! There are lots of styles to choose from (plain, patterned, stone-set…) and the best way to decide is by trying lots on, but you can start beforehand by thinking about whether you’d prefer a classic or modern style, whether there is a detail in your engagement ring you’d like to pick up on or something personal you’d like to incorporate. This will help us to show you the perfect designs that you can fall in love with. www.rmcmedia.co.uk 65

High quality service TAXASSIST ACCOUNTANTS OPENS OFFICE IN NORTH SHEFFIELD. new accountancy firm has opened in North Sheffield providing small businesses in the locality with reliable, bespoke and professional tax services. TaxAssist Accountants Sheffield North is the third office to open under the leadership of businessman Nick Brook, who operates two other offices in Huddersfield and Barnsley. Previously at Aizlewood Business Centre, the new office is now based on Wadsley Lane in Hillsborough and will provide tax services for small to medium businesses in the North Sheffield area. Aimed specifically at the small business market or those with up to £2million turnover, as well as self-employed customers and limited companies, TaxAssist Accountants provides a full-service accountancy offering, from tax and accountancy services such as bookkeeping, VAT, payroll, business accounts, as well as standalone tax returns for clients such as property landlords. Companies in North Sheffield will benefit from personalised tax support, as well as up to date advice on HMRC’s latest Making Tax Digital (MTD) initiative designed to make the UK one of the most digitally advanced tax administrations in the world. MTD focuses on reducing the amount of work for taxpayers and businesses, making tax and VAT more manageable and easier to understand. It is also designed to reduce the amount of errors made – which can lead to under or over payments of tax, penalties and interest charges. Nick Brook, director of TaxAssist Accountants Sheffield North, said: “Being visible, accessible and approachable is key to the business’s ongoing success. From running the two other offices we have identified and have proven results that having a shop front and high street presence attracts clients, from drive-bys to walk-ins. A location that gets a lot of passing traffic is key. “Using the blueprint from our other offices, we hope to emulate the same in Sheffield North, through our consistent, welcoming, professional and high-quality service, as well as our extensive accountancy expertise, ensuring all our clients’ needs are met.”

Master’s voice MOVING AWAY FROM THE CORE SUBJECTS, KIP MCGRATH’S DAVID KAYE IS PASSIONATE ABOUT MUSIC – AND IS HELPING TO NURTURE THE NEXT GENERATION OF TALENT. aths, English and Science are the three subjects our educational system champions, and when it comes to progressing into the world of work, they are subjects we can’t do without. However, David Kaye, the centre director of Kip McGrath Education Centres in Ecclesfield who specialises in these core subjects, recognises the importance of the arts. Outside of his role as centre director, David himself has been part of The Mastersingers ensemble for over ten years and has been proud to perform with many young, talented musicians over the years including local singer, Natasha Flounders, who will feature in their next concert in November at Ecclesfield Parish Church. David has always had a passion for helping young people break into the music business and even when he was a deputy headteacher at a local school some years back, he took some students on an inspirational school trip to the Albert Hall. “I’m unhappy with the way arts has been relegated in the education world, be it drama, music, painting or sculpting,” says David. Natasha Flounders is a former Kip McGrath student from Ecclesfield who first sang with the Mastersingers a couple of years ago when she was just 11 years old. She enjoyed her stage debut in David Kaye December 2015, when she was picked from dozens of hopefuls to sing Walking in the Air at a Christmas production of The Snowman in front of a packed-out Sheffield City Hall. Natasha only began singing seriously, after teachers running her school choir spotted her extraordinary talent and she joined the Pius Hume Singing School in Fulwood, which put her forward for the Sheffield City Hall solo part. It was only after watching a video of her outstanding performance at the Sheffield City Hall, that David, a baritone in the group, put her forward for The Mastersingers. “I was really impressed. You could tell that the audience was on the verge of giving her a standing ovation. She has a stunning voice and I wanted to help nurture her talent.” The Mastersingers were founded in the 1980s and over the years have performed live on TV and Radio 2, as well as on stage throughout the country. Their music has roots in a variety of styles, with their live shows covering everything from traditional choir numbers, to jazz, swing, rock and pop songs. As well as featuring local vocalists from across Sheffield, the group includes musicians from across Yorkshire and the north of England beyond. “There’s a fun atmosphere and a lively crowd when we perform live,” adds David. “People always go out clapping and singing along.” The Mastersingers perform all over the north of England and will have a local date at Ecclesfield Parish Church on 10 November.

M

What’s more The Mastersingers have a Christmas CD coming out soon, which was partly recorded at Parr Street Studios in Liverpool, a studio owned by Genesis and which has hosted the likes of Coldplay and Stereophonics. Tickets for the Ecclesfield performance are £8 and children’s tickets are just £1 (accompanying an adult). To find out more about The Mastersingers and their upcoming performances, visit www.mastersingers.co.uk. If you are interested in tuition for your child, visit www.kipmcgrath.co.uk/sheffield-north.

Wharncliffe Side Primary School & Nursery

Located on the outskirts of Sheffield in a beautiful rural setting, Wharncliffe Side is a small school providing for children from two to 11 years old. They’re proud of the attitudes and behaviour of pupils and aim for them to be well prepared and enthusiastic for the next stage of their education. The nursery has a small two and three-year-old section and integrated resource facilities for pupils with special needs and disabilities. It also has a well-resourced outdoor area where children enjoy the benefits of learning outdoors, including activities such as forest schools. In the main primary classes, children learn through a crosscurricular topic approach and the staff put a great deal of value on children developing into well-rounded individuals but also they like pupils to develop their own interests and talents such as sport and music. The pupils predominantly move to Bradfield Secondary School but a small number of pupils will go to other schools such as Stocksbridge High School, Forge Valley, Girls High School or one of Sheffield’s specialist schools. To visit the school or for further information contact the school office. Peace of mind

FOR COMMERCIAL INSURANCE WITH THE PERSONAL TOUCH, GIVE WESTMINSTER INSURANCE A CALL. nsurance is a necessary evil. You have it because you feel vulnerable without it, and with luck you’ll never feel the need to put the policy you pay every month or year to the test. Sadly, for most of us, that luck will run out at some time in our lives. When that moment comes you want to pick up the phone and find someone trustworthy, who takes an interest in your situation and offers immediate, practical advice. You also want that moment of truth to confirm that you were sold the correct insurance in the first place, that as well as a competitive price you were also offered practical cover that will kick in during times of crisis. We all know that online insurance for virtually anything is instantly available at the click of a computer. But if peace of mind is your key concern, the best option is a local, family-run business that has stood the test of time and does not leave you to deal with call centres and ‘faceless people’ during what is probably a stressful situation. Westminster Insurance has been a name the Sheffield business community have been able to rely on since it was set up by current owner Neil Lifford’s father in 1964, as a company primarily ‘run by taxi drivers for taxi drivers’. Neil took over in early 2000 and since joining forces with Clegg Gifford in 2015, the scope of business has increased greatly to

include a wide range of commercial needs. From properties to landlords insurance to public liability, Westminster Insurance will give you the competitive rate and the peace of mind you want. Shops, restaurants, takeaways, pubs and wine bars are also covered and many local businesses in the north Sheffield area have chosen Westminster Insurance. “We are people you can talk to,” says Neil. “It’s not just about having to make a claim, if you just need some advice there is someone on the end of the line who can help. “Over the years we have come to know some long-standing clients very well, and even ex-customers sometimes call for advice and we’re happy to help them.” Neil is moving towards semi-retirement now, but the Westminster Insurance family connection will remain, with son-in-law Kirk Ollerenshaw taking over at the helm.

The business is geared towards commercial insurance rather than personal these days, but even so it’s the personal approach that helps customers feel reassured they have been given competitive rates and a policy tailored for their individual needs. DO YOU REMEMBER?

e’ve used the Do You Remember strand in recent months to illustrate how lucky we are to live so close to glorious open countryside, even in an area of tightly populated villages and suburbs, and this fantastic aerial view is a classic example of that. You probably won’t have any trouble recognising the location, but can you help us out with any information on when the photograph was taken, and does it spark any memories? This month’s photo was provided by Barry Couldwell, as was last month’s, which showed Oughtibridge in North Sheffield. We’re struggling to find an exact date but perhaps the late mid-tolate 1950s would be a good guess.

umpkins. Soon those melon-sized orange things will be everywhere as Halloween fast approaches. It feels like they’ve always been a UK tradition, and yet, many of us will look back at our childhoods and remember a time when they were nowhere to be seen. Indeed – many of us remember carrying lanterns of a very different kind. In the past, parents would painstakingly carve out turnips and place small candles inside. Some still do, but since Brits have embraced Halloween as passionately as the Americans do, pumpkins are more in abundance than ever before. And with hard exteriors and soft centres, they are seemingly destined to be lanterns. Pumpkins may not seem exotic in this day and age, where fruits and vegetables from all over the world are as accessible as British grown crops, but it is believed that seeds from related plants originated in Mexico between 7000 and 5500BC. References to pumpkins date back many centuries and the name ‘pumpkin’ originated from the Greek word ‘pepon’, which translates as large melon. By the 20th century, pumpkins were synonymous with the harvest season in North America, and soon became a staple element of Halloween celebrations. Of course, Halloween itself originated with the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain, but us Brits only fully embraced pumpkins from our American cousins some 20 years ago. And now, just as Christmas tree farms are popping up all over the UK during the festive season, so are pumpkin farms on the run up to Halloween. Village Pumpkins in Barlow is one of the latest farms to join the trend. Every weekend throughout October and on selected dates in the week before Halloween, you can grab a wheelbarrow and pick your own. This is the first year that sheep farmer, Charlie Vilage has attempted to grow pumpkins, and he’s sure chosen a good one to do so. This year’s unusually hot summer has provided the perfect climate for growing

P

pumpkins. So much so that Charlie is expecting a whopping 5,000 to grace his land. “The sun’s been good this summer,” agrees Charlie. “We haven’t had as much rain as we normally would, so that has steadied their growth, but they’ve done well this year. They are obviously sun-loving vegetables! They need a well-drained field to grow in, with plenty of feed and we’ve used the manure from the cattle. “We put the seeds in pots in May and then we planted them out in the fields in the first week of June. They’d usually need to go in a greenhouse at the potting stage, but the weather has been favourable so they didn’t need it. Bees then pollinate the flowers, so the pumpkins can grow.” Few people realise that the pumpkin plant produces striking yellow flowers, and even fewer are aware that not all pumpkins are orange. “There is a variety. There’s white ones and orange ones. The orange ones are green to start with and then change colour as they grow. But the white ones are white all the way through. There’s been quite a lot of interest in them so far. We’d already saved some in the summer for customers wanting decorations for their weddings in October.” Going to Village Pumpkins not only creates a fantastic day out for all the family to enjoy, it’s also a great way to find out more about agriculture and the way our food is grown. The perfect pumpkin, is firm on the outside and hollow in the middle. Just give one a tap to test if it’s ready. If you’re not sure or have any other questions, Charlie will be on hand and happy to help. So if you are still tempted to pick up a pumpkin from a supermarket, think again. “Obviously, Halloween is becoming more and more popular in England, and it’s an opportunity for kids to come out and see how pumpkins are grown,” concludes Charlie. “People should come to Village Pumpkins to support local farmers and to see the variety of pumpkins we grow.” Village Pumpkins will open from 10am to 4pm every weekend throughout October and then on 29, 30 and 31 October. Pick your own at Village Pumpkins, Johnnygate Lane, Barlow, S18 7SE or find them on Facebook @VillagePumpkinsPYO.

Croatia is calling VENTURE TO SOME OF THE MOST ICONIC AND REMARKABLE DESTINATIONS IN EUROPE AND ENJOY A JOURNEY OF DISCOVERY, FRIENDSHIP AND FUN.

ne of the world’s most popular tourist destinations in Europe right now is Croatia – and it’s not hard to see why. The dazzling coastline might be the first thing that steals your heart, but the walled city of Dubrovnik, UNESCO protected city of Split and breathtaking national parks will keep you coming back for more. The mere mention of Croatia conjures up images of pristine landscapes and sparkling seas, fortified towns furnished with outdoor cafés, heaving with care-free yachties, recently blown in from the last picture-perfect port. The sun-drenched coast has long served as an exotic playground for Europe's crowned heads. Edward VIII and Wallis Simpson famously skinny-dipped there in the 1930s. In fact, most of Europe's greatest empires including the Romans, Venetians, Ottoman Turks and Habsburgs, have all left their calling card in the form of architecture, language, art and food. The superb city of Dubrovnik, its medieval

O

bastions rising vertically from the sea, is known as the ‘Pearl of the Adriatic’. Everyone from George Bernard Shaw to the King of Jordan have been beguiled by its cobbled streets and old world charm. See the Rector’s Palace, Onofrio’s fountain and the Franciscan and Dominican monasteries. A great way to see Croatia is exploring via the country roads. You can discover the fascinating island of Korčula, a mini-fortress encased in honey-coloured walls, which rivals Dubrovnik as the top jewel in Croatia’s crown, during a walking exploration. You’ll hear about local legends and visit the ruins of the supposed birthplace of Marco Polo. The city of Split is a town within a town, a maze of cobbled alleys and marbled flagged courtyards – the remnants of a Roman Emperor’s palace. Today’s cafés, bars and shopkeepers ply their trade from the same facades carved some 1700 years ago. Away from the coast, a real highlight is entering by mini-train into the world-famous

Postojna Cave system, before walking through an illuminated fairyland of stalactites and stalagmites. Visit this UNESCO World Heritage Site and then marvel at the water wonderland of Plitvice Lakes National Park as you walk along stunning cascades. Think striking azure waterways, cascading falls and thick woodland sheltering abundant wildlife. Be sure to check out the fascinating capital city of Zagreb. Explore the mazes of the upper and lower town, Archbishop’s Palace, St. Marks Church and the Opera House for a varied overview of the city. Don’t forget to explore Roosevelt Square, the attractive facades of Ban Josip Jelačić Square and the majestic cathedral. Croatia also boasts the world’s best sunsets (Alfred Hitchcock was a huge fan!) so a dinner cruise on a fisherman’s boat while the sun takes its nightly bow is a must-do. The coves and hidden beaches of the beautiful island of Hvar are not to be missed too. Sounds idyllic doesn’t it? www.rmcmedia.co.uk 89

Jeep has announced the arrival of their all-new Renegade SUV. Starting from £19,200, the Renegade is amongst the most competitive when it comes to value for money. Available with a choice of diesel and brand-new petrol engines, the Renegade has been built to suit everybody’s needs. A 120hp 1.0-litre turbo and 150hp 1.3-litre are the petrol choices and 1.6-litre and 2.0litre for diesel options. Can be paired with a six-speed manual, DDCT (Dual Dry Clutch Transmission) or a nine-speed automatic transmission. New Fabia makes its debut Say hello to the newly updated Skoda Fabia. Out now, the car has a start price of just £12,840. With a host of new safety systems, boosted specifications and a sharp new, this is the most advanced Skoda Fabia in history. Each Fabia now features daytime LED running lights, front assist and a multifunction trip computer as standard. The revised Fabia will be petrol powered only in the form of a 1.0-litre three-cylinder unit in three power guises: 74hp; 94hp; and 108hp. The most powerful version comes with the option of a seven-speed DSG gearbox. JORDAN CUTFORTH HAS THE PICK OF THE NEW AND UPDATED MODELS IN THIS MONTH’S MOTORING ROUND-UP.

Fresh outlook Honda has revealed updates to its much-loved subcompact SUV, the HR-V. Upgrades include a new, highgloss dark chrome panel above the grille, deeper air intake sections that house circular fog lights, and the headlights now have projector lenses with redesigned LED daytime running lights as standard. More expensive trims come with a new 17-inch alloy design, and the exhaust tailpipe has a unique chrome finisher. Under the skin, Honda has added extra sound insulation throughout the interior. The HR-V will be powered only by a 128hp, 1.5-litre, naturally aspirated petrol. Figures are 53.2mpg and 121g/km of CO2. Customer deliveries will start from October. A more powerful 1.5-litre turbo petrol unit and a 1.6-litre diesel unit will be available in 2019. Manual and CVT options available.

New MG adds a touch of class MG – synonymous for building British sports cars a few decades ago – has built a new version of their current best-selling model, the MG3. Back when the MG3 was first released, it was a supermini for those wanting to stand out from the supermini crowd, wanting to not conform to the usual Polo, Fabia, Fiesta gang. But now, this is a car definitely worth considering. Every MG3 comes with a seven-year/80,000-mile warranty, showing us that MG believes in the quality of its products. It’s also one of the most spacious superminis on the market, with boot space measuring at 285-litres. A fresh looking exterior and interior gives the MG3 a very classy feel making it a very appealing proposition. Prices starting from £9,495. Available now. www.rmcmedia.co.uk 93

MOTORING

Sporty new look THERE’S AN AIR OF SOPHISTICATION ABOUT THE NEW MG3, WRITES PHOEBE SEYMOUR. ith a 95-year reputation built on sporty, stylish and distinctive cars, the MG has captured the hearts of countless car admirers. Its look may have transformed dramatically over the years, but when you get behind the wheel of a modern MG, it’s clear that these values continue to be the driving force behind the brand. This certainly proved to be the case when I arrived at Eric Stead in Ecclesfield to take the new MG3 for a spin. Like the MG itself, Eric Stead has a long and established reputation. It is one of the oldest motor dealerships in the area, having opened in 1962. As such, all of the staff at this family-run business have a great depth of knowledge about the models on offer. You’ll even find a couple of gorgeous vintage MGs when you visit their showroom. Parked on the forecourt next to its predecessor, the new MG3 is similar to the older model at first glance. But on closer inspection, I realised it has had something of a facelift, with a more sporty grille, giving this new hatchback an air of sophistication. Sales advisor, David Hall, handed over the keys before familiarising me with the new features inside. I’d been given the Exclusive MG3 in Ruby Red, which comes with all the same features as the Explore and Excite models in the range, plus some added extras

including sports seats, cruise control, reversing camera with dynamic guide lines, Apple CarPlayTM and DAB radio with USB connection for smart phones. Though a truly modern car, from its LED lights to its adherence to the Euro 6 Emissions standards, there is an element of simplicity that I really liked. The controls are straightforward and I breathed a sigh of relief to see that the handbrake was in fact a handbrake and not a button.

Before I knew it, I was zipping down the road easily weaving between parked cars and effortlessly climbing through the gears. Though compact on the outside, this car is something of a Tardis, with plenty of legroom in the back and a spacious boot. With a high and comfortable seats, it would be perfect for a long drive too. Now driving down Stocksbridge Bypass, I was able to really put my foot down. And even at high speeds it’s a smooth, and yes, really fun drive. Once I’d reached the Langsett Barn carpark, I was able to try out the parking assist technology, with its helpful guidelines and beep as I neared the curb, before returning to the showroom. I was sad to give the keys back to David, and when he asked how it had gone, I couldn’t help smiling from ear to ear. The new MG3 did exactly as it had promised; it had given me an enjoyable drive in a stylish (inside and out) car. And with no deposit, zero per cent APR up to five years and a seven-year warranty, I was very tempted to keep this car.
