PULSECONTENTS
EDITOR’S MESSAGE: elcome to our weddings special. Whether you’re newly engaged and looking for some inspiration, or simply love admiring the details of local couples’ wedding days, we have plenty to keep you occupied. Regional Magazine Company was full of love this summer as two members of staff – credit controller Kelly and publishing manager Sam – as well as the daughter of Pulse’s former publishing manager Julie tied the knot. See a beautiful selection of pictures on page 48. We also spoke to two of these brides about the location of their wedding. With many couples seeking sun, sea and sand as a magical backdrop to their special day, we looked at the pros and cons of getting married abroad versus staying at home. If you haven’t found the perfect venue for your special day, their comments on page 14 may just help you decide. And if you’re a bride-to-be – or a wedding guest – hoping to look your best on the big day, turn to page 8 for our wedding beauty special. From foundation that’ll stay put all day long to creamy lipstick that suits almost everyone, we have everything you need. As always, if you have a story to share, are hosting an event that you’d like us to publicise or have photographs of a recent celebration or event, we’d love to hear from you. Email Stephanie.Burns@regionalmagazine.co.uk or call me on 0114 250 6300 (Monday to Thursday 9am-5.30pm and Friday 9am-4pm). If you have a business and would like to advertise in Pulse, please call Publishing Manager Helen Wragg on 0114 250 6300 or email Helen.Wragg@regionalmagazine.co.uk. You can also follow us on Twitter (@PulseRMC) or read Pulse (and the rest of Regional Magazine Company’s titles) online at www.regionalmagazine.co.uk. Have a great month.

PULSEWEDDINGS
HOME & AWAY From sun-kissed beach ceremonies to traditional church processions, Pulse weighs up the options of getting married at home or abroad. By Eleanor Hyde.
P
ure white waves break on golden sands, palm trees provide shade from the blazing sun, you gaze into your partner’s eyes and utter those precious words... if this sounds like your dream wedding then going abroad is definitely for you. On the other hand, language barriers and the fear of coming home to find that your marriage isn’t legally binding are probably things you would much rather avoid. Nevertheless, over 850,000 couples are expected to shun rainy England for nuptials in the sun this year. The main reasons for this trend seem to be lower costs, fewer guests (though you do run the risk of alienating distant cousins) and being able to combine your wedding with your hen/stag do as well as your honeymoon. So how easy is it to plan your big day compared to closer to home?

Getting married abroad The best place to start if you’re organising a wedding abroad is to contact a travel agent. Winter, beach and luxury weddings are just a few choices, making this a slightly more challenging decision than simply choosing the local village church. Once you’ve decided what sort of wedding you’d like and where, a good travel agency should do the leg work for you, making it almost as easy as saying ‘I do’. A wedding coordinator is usually included in the holiday wedding package price and, being based in your chosen hotel or resort, they come fully equipped with expert local knowledge and information about the legalities of getting married abroad. You’ll be safe in the knowledge that you won’t come home to discover you’re still officially single. Some guests may not be able to afford flights, but it may well be that a smaller wedding of 15-20 close family and friends is preferable. By marrying abroad you may even choose to be generous, partially funding some or all of your guest’s flights. So just how much will a wedding abroad set you back? Packages differ in cost depending on where you go, how long you go for and what is included, but the following two examples show how inexpensive they can be. A wedding package available in Mexico including flowers, wine for 40 people, dinner for two, couple massages, a minister and the marriage certificate in the local language starts from £769. A wedding package for Disneyland Florida including a six-hour limousine service, organist for the ceremony, violinist for the reception, a two-tiered cake, champagne, photographer and flowers, starts from £3,500. Of course, there will probably be additional costs, but with reports of the average UK wedding totalling £20,000, it’s easy to see why weddings abroad are proving so popular.
Case Study 2: Kelly recently married Jonathan Mann at Halifax Hall, Sheffield Did you ever consider getting married abroad? I would have considered it but Jonathan wanted to marry in Sheffield so we could have a big wedding and all our family and friends could come. What do you think are the benefits of having a British wedding? We were able to plan everything ourselves and could view venues easily. It also meant we could use companies that we knew were reliable. The flowers were arranged by the same people that my sister used for her wedding. Did you have any concerns about getting married in Britain? I suppose the weather is something you can never guarantee here, but it couldn’t have ruined our day. When we were having our photographs taken it drizzled a bit, but we really didn’t mind; it’s all just part of it. We had some gorgeous weather on our honeymoon in Florida – as well as some tropical storms – and had a fantastic time.
www.regionalmagazine.co.uk
Case Study 1: Lucy recently married husband Damian Read in Marmari, Greece Why did you decide to marry abroad? A lot of our friends had already got married in Sheffield and there are only so many available venues in the area. We’d always discussed getting married abroad and just wanted something a bit different. How did friends and family react? My mum was a bit concerned at first because it’s a big ask for people to come away for a week when the wedding is only a one-day event, but it was nice because it ended up just being pretty-much all family. Was there anything you had to consider? We had to think about dresses and outfits, because of the weather, and I was a bit nervous about not being able to view things beforehand like you would in England. You also don’t arrange a lot – like booking flowers, hair and makeup – until you’re there. But we’d been in touch with the wedding coordinator by email beforehand, and they do weddings every day, so we had faith everything would go to plan.
Getting married at home So what are the advantages of having a wedding closer to home? The obvious bonus is that you can have a larger wedding in which the majority of your family and friends can attend. Often when a couple marries abroad, they feel obliged to host an at-home reception too, to include those that weren’t able to make it. This adds a big cost onto what might have started as a cheap wedding – pointless when you could have held the wedding at home in the first place. For those who choose to stay at home but still want an alternative to the traditional church or registry office, there are many options. Grand stately homes are particularly popular, as are more relaxed outdoor weddings, but if you want to go for something a bit more unusual, how about a shark aquarium or a whisky vault? Unsurprisingly, these offbeat options come with a hefty price tag; a Yorkshire castle costs over £5,000 to hire, and a woodland wedding over £4,000 depending on the add-ons. Wedding planners in the UK cost around £1,500-2,000 depending on the size of your wedding. Though they do come with a lot of expert knowledge and can guide you through every step of the process, ten to 15 per cent of your wedding budget is a lot to spend on one person.

Alternatively, why not escape the hustle and bustle of the run up to Christmas by indulging in two of your favourite things – pampering and partying – with a spa and party night sleepover? Of course you’re also invited to enjoy the two most important dates – Christmas Day and New Year’s Eve – in the best possible way. Celebrate the 25th with a festive feast (from £49 per adult or £24 per child) or, on New Year’s Eve, arrive in your finery and enjoy a glass of fizz and a superb buffet dinner before the resident DJ takes you into 2016. And once the new year arrives, there is plenty to keep you entertained at Tankersley Manor. New for 2016, the Taylor Swift tribute night on 19 February and Fake That on 29 April are set to be the stand-out events of the year and tickets are already selling fast. With a three-course meal, the live act and dancing to the DJ’s tunes until 1am all for just £28.95, don’t miss your chance to join in the fun. In the meantime, the bar and brasserie have everything you need to enjoy an informal meal any night of the week. Whether it’s a midweek treat, a special occasion or a Saturday night out with friends, their mouthwatering menu and bustling bar is the perfect place to relax with great food in fabulous surroundings. For more information and to enquire about booking, simply call 01226 744700 and a member of the friendly team will be happy to help.

PULSEIN BRIEF
Getting fit in Chapeltown Park
Marc Roberts (centre of back row) with sport programme manager Mark Ryan (fifth from right) and college students.
Football star Marc returns to college Barnsley FC footballer Marc Roberts, 25, went back to his roots when he visited Barnsley College’s sport department. Marc, who studied sport at the college, returned to the Honeywell campus to speak to students at the college’s sports fair, which introduced learners from across the college to the sporting opportunities open to them. The defender chatted to students about his experiences at college and his journey into professional football. Marc said: “The students had plenty of questions about how I found studying at college and how I got to where I am now. My time at college was important and I developed most as a footballer during those years. I went to university after college so I emphasised the importance of education to the students, even for those who want to pursue a sporting career.”

Chapeltown Park now has a 12-piece outdoor gym at the top of the hill overlooking the children’s playground. The Friends of Chapeltown Park are slowly working towards their aim of providing some muchneeded facilities in the park for older kids and adults and this is the first part of a teenage project aimed at older children. Doris Denton from the Friends group said: “It has taken three years to get the funding for this project and we would like to thank Sheffield City Council parks department for their co-operation and the many sponsors who granted money to enable the project to go ahead. The gym has proved extremely popular since it was installed at the end of June. “ If anyone would like free advice on using the equipment safely, trainers Mark and Dawn will be on site 10am-11am every Monday.
Community choir on the hunt for new members Barnsley Community Choir is recruiting new members of all ages and abilities to join the group as rehearsals begin again after the summer break. The choir prides itself on offering anyone who enjoys singing the opportunity to rehearse with like-minded people and perform concerts in and around the Barnsley area, without the need to audition or read music. Based at Barnsley College’s Old Mill Lane campus, the choir rehearses on Tuesday evenings between 7pm and 8.30pm during term-time and musical styles ranging from classical, pop and rock to musical theatre are included in the choir’s repertoire. Choir leader Susan Donnelly said: “The Barnsley Community Choir are a great bunch of people who enjoy singing and performing community-based concerts in order to help raise funds for local charities. We’d love to welcome new members along to our rehearsals and would really like to boost our male membership in order to produce a broader and richer sound.”

Wildflowers and fruit trees prove a hit in the park Chapeltown Park’s new wildflower and wild fruit tree orchard has been a hit with visitors this summer. Not only does it put on a wonderful show, it also attracts birds, butterflies and other wildlife. Last autumn, the Friends of Chapeltown Park obtained funding from First TransPennine Express Green Grants and the Forestry Commission to remove the grass, rotivate the area, dig holes for the wild fruit trees to be planted and supply rubber straps for them. The flower seeds were obtained from local flower specialist company Pictorial Meadows and Graham Taylor of Taylor-MadeGardens & Landscaping Ltd of High Green was contracted to do the work. The ground was prepared in April and, for the following three months, wildflower seeds were sown. Eventually, during the first week in July, the flowers bloomed and the meadow was soon filled

Barnsley Sixth Form College is celebrating an excellent set of A Level results with a one per cent increase in the pass rate and students achieving more than 300 high grades – a seven per cent increase on last year. The overall pass rate at the college is 98 per cent, with a 100 per cent pass rate in 18 subjects, including chemistry, physics, ICT, English language, business studies, French and geography. Outstanding individual successes include former Ecclesfield School pupil Tobias Fox, 18, who achieved two A grades in maths and chemistry and an A* in computing and is now going to the University of York to study computer science. Principal Colin Booth OBE said: “These results are a brilliant start to the new academic year and things will be improving even more for our A Level students when they move into our brand new £18m sixth form campus on St Mary’s Place in January 2016.” See barnsleysixthformcollege.co.uk for more information.

PROMOTIONKIP MCGRATH
Kip McGrath’s David Kaye outlines key changes to the curriculum. he new school year means yet more changes. Here is a very brief low-down for the lay person on the latest ‘fixes’ being applied in our education system this September. In primary schools, English is no longer literacy, it is English. There is a strong emphasis on grammar. Children will no longer have to learn about every genre under the sun, but they will have to think more deeply about how authors write. As well as having good grammar, their spelling will need to improve. There is not much emphasis on speaking and listening despite the fact that ‘if you can’t say it, you can’t write it’. Primary maths sees all the confusion of the myriad calculation methods go (along with calculators). People of a certain age will breathe a sigh of relief that they can now understand what their children (or grandchildren) are doing. There will be no SATs mental test next year (do I hear a loud cheer from the nation’s children?). It will be replaced by a written arithmetic test! There will be much greater emphasis on fractions. Expect your children to convert the distance to the seaside/theme park into kilometres and to understand what the Roman numerals on BBC programme credits mean. Children will also need to know their times tables by the end of year 4 when they become nine years old. There is more, of course, but too much for here.

Anybody with a 14year-old child may know that this year’s year 10 cohort will be studying for the new maths, English language and English literature GCSEs. The other subjects come online next September. Students will be graded from 1 (the lowest) to 9 (the highest) based on the result of external exams taken at the end of the course after two years in June. Students who want to resit will be given one chance in the following November. Maths will become more challenging and there will be greater emphasis on spelling, punctuation and grammar in all subjects. The new GCSEs will get harder so they match or exceed other high performing countries. It will be interesting to see how all this works out. Would anyone like to guess when these new changes will be changed? David Kaye is the Centre Director for Kip McGrath Education Centres Sheffield North in Ecclesfield and was a former headteacher with 25 years’ experience in South and West Yorkshire.

C0-OP MEMORIES We look back to the days when you could treat 60 people to wedding tea for just over a fiver. Words: Stephanie Burns
ast month’s picture of Ecclesfield Hospital Parade wasn’t the only item sent in by Nigel Womersley of Mill Road in Ecclesfield. This bill from Brightside and Carbrook Co-operative is for the tea at Nigel’s late parents’ wedding in October 1937. “It seems almost unbelievable that a wedding tea for 60 people would be under six pounds,” said Nigel. “My, how times have changed. Of course, wages have risen enormously since then, as has the cost of living.” The Co-operative opened its first shop in Carbrook in 1868 and went on to run a series of successful operations across Sheffield, including the Castle House department store in the city centre from 1929. This closed seven years ago when the Sheffield Co-operative Society, as it had become known, merged with the Co-operative Group. Do you have memories of the Co-operative or Castle House that you would like to share? COMPLETE KITCHEN & BEDROOM SOLUTIONS
From a replacement worktop to a whole new kitchen or bedroom, there’s no job too small for CKB. aving traded out of 133 Middlewood Road for over six years now, the Sheffield public are becoming well aware of the high quality, bespoke service on offer at Complete Kitchens and Bedroom Solutions. Owned by Scott Webster, CKB offer a complete kitchen and bedroom service alongside the capability of anything from removing walls to building extensions. Scott said: “When you come to us you really do get everything. Building work, electrics, plastering, decoration, fitting, flooring – this is a one-stop-shop.” But just because Scott and his team can perform complete renovations, that doesn’t mean that they have to. CKB understand that not everybody can afford top to bottom renovations at this moment in time so are more than happy to work on anything from replacing a single kitchen unit upwards. “I can do eight metres of worktop and a new sink and tap for £950 or a whole kitchen or bedroom – so people can have whatever they can budget for,” said Scott. “And if you have your own electrician or plumber that you would like to use then you are more than welcome to do so. We will do as little or as much as you wish.” A feature of CKB which sets it apart from many of its competitors is that it manufactures everything on site, giving it a bespoke service. This means it can cater to any needs or desires. Scott employs a close team of dedicated workers including a registered electrician, and plumber, as well as qualified plasterer, brick layers and window fitters, who are all contracted to CKB. Gloss doors particularly in white and cream are in vogue at the current time. This gives a room a fresh appearance and Scott has seen requests for this design boom.
H
Consequently Scott is offering deals on an Astro white and cream gloss – check in at the showroom or give him a call for more deals. Scott doesn’t Mr and Mrs Carter, S20 believe in such gimmicks as Fitted April 2015 offering customers ten per cent off their total bill though. “These are often used to pull the wool over people’s eyes. I offer competitive prices from the word go.” Should you contact CKB, Scott will come out to view your home for a free appointment. The visit normally lasts for an hour depending on job size. “I don’t give quotes off-the-cuff. I am meticulous when it comes to pricing, so post-appointment I will go through everything and provide an accurate, itemised and fair quote.” Scott is the initial point of contact for customers and he not only designs his work but does the fitting too. Once Scott has committed to a job he dedicates all his time to it from inception to completion. He guarantees that he will not be working on multiple projects at one time and is even willing to turn down work to be able to do this. “My customers like to know that I will always be there and that they have my undivided attention. That is the least they deserve and will get when they come to me.” As such his customers can contact him 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Doors and worktops are guaranteed for a decade but for extra peace of mind Scott ensures that payment comes in instalments and that the full fee is not paid until the job has been completed satisfactorily. For a company that will provide your home with undivided, specialist and bespoke attention, give CKB a call today!

CURRYING
FLAVOUR!
Words and photography: Richard Abbey
Bye bye barbecue, a curry at Butlers Balti House is just the job. ot summer days made for barbecues and beer gardens are already a fading memory as the nights draw in and autumn takes hold, so a curry is just the job to help keep the growing chill in the air at bay. On our early Saturday evening visit to Butlers Balti House, we sat down among couples, families and large parties who were all tucking in to dinner. The large Broad Lane venue is light and stylish, with lots of ebony and chrome to give it a contemporary edge. There’s a small bar and waiting area but we headed straight to our table in the restaurant, which was busy already. One thing we noticed immediately was the number of staff; more than enough to maintain your attention throughout the evening. Our drinks orders were quickly taken while we perused the extensive menu. Butlers, unsurprisingly given their name, specialise in balti dishes which are traditional north Indian dishes cooked in cast iron pots. The restaurant take things a step further by serving your curry in these dishes, which adds a nice touch of theatre to your meal (they do seem to keep your curry nice and hot too). After crunching our way through a poppadom or two, we started with recommended dishes of tandoori fish and a mixed starter. The fish, haddock on this occasion, was firm and meaty and not overpowered by the tandoori spices. A nice, light dish to start. The mixed starter consisted of a spicy seekh kebab, pieces of chicken tikka, onion bhaji and finger-licking

tandoori chicken wings. For mains we were again happy to be steered by our waiter and owner Sajid Quader who recommended a new addition to the menu – Arabian lamb. It was a fragrant dish of lamb fillet, mushrooms, cream, fresh mint and coriander. It was delicious; light, fresh and with just the right amount of spice. We also shared a special jalfrezi which had just the right amount of kick to complement a very rich, tasty sauce with chicken tikka, lamb, prawns and king prawns. Pilau rice and a garlic naan bread were more than adequate sundries. Since moving to the Broad Lane
premises, the Butlers empire has continued to grow. You’ll now find an equally big first floor space to complement the main restaurant which is largely used for conferences and private parties (or extra space if the restaurant is particularly busy). Butlers have enhanced their takeaway service with the introduction of an app, meaning you can order and pay for food for delivery or collection at the touch of a button. The night was still young as we left the restaurant, which was continuing to get busier. On this evidence, who needs barbecues and beer gardens when you can enjoy a good old curry?

PROMOTIONTANKERSLEY PARK GOLF CLUB
With its new facilities and beautifully manicured course, Tankersley Park Golf Club is the ideal place to enjoy the game. ave you ever considered joining a golf club? If so, now is the perfect time. With a fantastic location and superb course, Tankersley Park Golf Club (TPGC) has much to entice golfers for the 2015 season – including memberships with no upfront joining fee. All are welcome at TPGC – including beginners, juniors, ladies, gentlemen, pay-as-you-play, societies and corporate groups – and flexible memberships are available. Contact the secretary for more details. The construction of a new practice facility will commence in the next few weeks and will hopefully be up and running for the autumn. This facility will be open to all – the general public, as well as members – and will be a welcome addition to the area for all budding golfers to practise during the dark winter months. The land has a fascinating past, with many uses over the last few centuries. It was an oak forest, a civil war battlefield, a baronial deer park, a coal and ironstone mining area and even a battle tank testing ground before being transformed into a beautifully manicured golf course. Today, the modern, well-equipped clubhouse is the host of many social events and dinner dances throughout the year and boasts spectacular views over the surrounding
