cutters for producing mouldings - and when it comes to paint, only the best colours and finishes will do. “Whether it’s a quick supper or a feast for the whole family, the order of the day is always a kitchen that works hard, looks beautiful and feels welcoming. To achieve this, we work with all Farrow and Ball paint colours to create a captivating new look without compromise. “We recently worked with a client who spent two years researching bespoke kitchens; meeting with a host of companies offering hand painted kitchens - not sprayed, like ours. She ultimately decided to go with our finish after finding it was more durable. Upon finishing the kitchen, the client couldn’t quite believe the quality of the job against hand-painted kitchens and thanked us immensely.” Achieving a modern finish with no joins, DJ Martin’s spray service ensure no water discolouration - something that can happen with vinyl-wrapped doors. In the David J Martin showroom, you’ll find a stunning range of kitchens on display, but they also produces bespoke furniture for every room in the house. They cater to all styles, from traditional to modern - with cocktail cabinets and

cinema rooms on trend right now. Following a consultation, where you will discuss budgets and receive expert design advice, cabinetmakers work from plans drawn by David and create bespoke furniture which can be sprayed to a high gloss or satin finish, using durable Two Pac paint. For those customers undertaking full refurbishment of their home, David also provides a one-stop shop for structural, plumbing and electricity work. For David, it’s all about the customer experience, whether the job be big or small. He has built a superb reputation for customer satisfaction and the team is highly regarded for their after-sales service, ensuring that every customer is a happy and fixing any problems that may arise - whether that be two weeks or ten years down the line. So what are you waiting for? One call could result in a stunning new extension, complete with kitchen, plumbing and electricity - David only employs the best, after all. Healthy outlook RICHARD ABBEY LOOKS AT HOW THE SHEFFIELD WEDNESDAY COMMUNITY PROGRAMME IS HELPING THE PEOPLE OF HILLSBOROUGH AND BEYOND IMPROVE THEIR HEALTH AND WELLBEING.

The Fit Fans Thursday morning group at Hillsborough Stadium

t 87 years old, Derek Hargreaves is the oldest member of the Sheffield Wednesday Community Programme (SWFCCP). He was also one of the first people to sign up to their health and wellbeing programmes when they started in late 2015. SWFCCP is the football club’s charitable arm and seeks to increase involvement, training provision and support within the community by working across four key themes: participation, health, education and inclusion. Derek was one of many who were

drawn to the health benefits provided through four ‘Fit Fans’ session per week as well as walking football and has attended regularly over the last four years. “My brother, Kenneth, introduced me to it,” explained Owls fan Derek. “It was hard to start off with but I really enjoy it, I’ve made a lot of friends. Although Kenneth has now left and gone to Sheffield United to play walking football. He still wears his Wednesday shirt though.” The social aspect has proved as bigger draw as the health benefits to a lot of attendees and many also join a free walk

held every Thursday afternoon, which can see them trooping around Hillsborough Park, in the shadow of the stadium, or around one of the nearby reservoirs. Sometimes there’s even a pub lunch at the end of it. So how do you get involved? The first step is to enrol on the community programme’s Fit Club Education Programme. This is a free 12week course containing all the help, support and guidance you’ll need to pursue, and maintain, a healthy lifestyle. All participants are trained and guided by community coaches and are regularly assessed so improvement can be measured. At the end of the course, participants have the option of signing up to the Fit Club Membership Programme, which costs £15 per month, and gives them access to the Fit Fans and walking football sessions. They are then free to attend as many or as few as they like. “We’ve had over 200 people on the gateway course and have retained about 70 per cent,” said Rob Ward, who is one of the community coaches and a specialist in exercise science and nutrition. “Obviously we want to increase that number but it’s about raising awareness and developing an understanding, it’s about improving health, not necessarily fitness. We’re not a boot camp, everyone works at their own level.” As part of the membership programme, all members receive a health MOT every 12 weeks, which tracks weight, blood pressure, resting heart rate and body fat. They each receive feedback on progress and improvement. Rob led a Thursday morning Fit Fans

session pitchside at the stadium, which I attended with 17 other people, including ex-player and current community coach John Pearson. With the lush, green Hillsborough pitch as your backdrop, the 45-minute session started with a walk in front of the empty kop to warm up before the group was divided into three. Rob had created three stations which we would rotate round every four minutes or so. The circuit included squats, lunges and stretches, resistance bands for strength work, planks and sit-ups for core work and stair climbs up the south stand for cardio. After several rotations, and a few water breaks, another walk in front of the kop was undertook to cool down. There were a few red faces, plenty of smiles and lots of encouragement. Many of those attending were returning for the walk at 1pm as well as for walking football the next day. “Everyone goes at their own pace,” stressed John Pearson. “No-one is pushed, if you want to run, run, if you want to walk, walk. It’s about everyone feeling involved and feeling the benefit.” Derek was a credit to everyone. His commitment and verve was amazing and he clearly enjoys taking part. “I’ll be honest, I’d been a bit lazy before,” he added. “But it’s great. We’re like one big family.” As well as attending the Fit Fans sessions Derek also attends the Friday afternoon walking football session, which take place at Sheffield Wednesday’s training ground on Middlewood Road. For the uninitiated, the game is essentially football with no running on >>> Continued on the next page

HEALTH

Sheffield Wednesday Football Club Community Programme As well as the many health and social benefits we’ve outlined, there’s much more to the SWFCCP and the good work they do in north Sheffield and beyond. • As one of their key themes, education plays a huge role, whether that’s delivering alternative provision for 14-16-year-olds or offering further, higher and adult courses in football coaching and development. • SWFCCP work closely with around 40 local schools providing fun and interactive experiences as well as delivering coaching sessions around the city for 3-16-year-olds. FA-qualified coaches run soccer camps during school holidays, which are great for all ages and ability – you might even find a player or two drops by. • They run a National Citizen Service programme, which is a great way for 16-17 year olds to make extraordinary friendships and learn skills you don’t get taught in class – it’s great for your UCAS application too. • Sheffield Wednesday Football Club are proud to be on the Register of high quality Training Providers and were the first professional football club delivering apprenticeship opportunities for levy paying organisations who are looking to invest in developing their workforce. • SWFCCP also offer traineeships, which are aimed at preparing individuals who are currently not in education, employment or training for future careers by helping them become work ready. There is currently a 19-24 year old programme and a 25+ year old programme; the traineeships last for 13 weeks and cover everything from maths and English support to improving your CV and finding work experience. • Children aged 5-14 can also host their birthday party with SWFCCP. There are two packages available, a matchday and non-matchday experience. To find out more, visit www.swfccp.co.uk

or off the ball. With less stress on the body and no real sudden change of direction or cutting movements the game allows participants to play without apprehension. It was designed to help people keep an active lifestyle, as well as support getting people back into football who stopped due to age or injury. Joining Derek, and a few more of the Fit Fans participants, under the dome at the training ground was Kelly Thomas who attends the mixed sessions most weeks. “I couldn’t keep up with normal football at first,” said Kelly, who is from High Green. “There were no sessions for women where I live so this has been perfect for me. I now play four times a week and have even progressed to 5-aside and 11-a-side.” As well as the competitive nature of the game, there is also great camaraderie and a togetherness that you perhaps wouldn’t find if you just attending your local gym. It’s clear that these sessions are about more than just being healthy, they are a great example of how SWFCCP’s key themes – participation, health, education and inclusion – all come together and how they are really benefiting the community. Just ask Derek. www.rmcmedia.co.uk 19

HEALTH

Get a good night’s sleep

With the Peak District on our doorstep, it’s the perfect excuse to get some exercise

Don’t worry, be happy TAKE STEPS TOWARDS A HEALTHY LIFESTYLE BY FOLLOWING THESE BASIC PRINCIPLES, WRITES GENEVIEVE BRAUND. owadays it seems that everyone – health expert, nutritionist or not – has an opinion on health, and these get thrown at us through many different avenues. Whether via social media, blogs or YouTube channels, every influencer is keen to tell us how to lose weight and get that much sought after six pack. However as many nutritionists will tell you, there is more to health than perfect abs. Rather, these fad 90 day diet plans can often leave us feeling lethargic, full of cravings and most importantly; unhappy. So just how can we lead (and maintain!) the healthiest and happiest life possible? Sixer has waded through the heaps of ‘advice’ out there, and boils it down to these basic principles…

N

Eat ‘real’ food ‘Real’ foods are foods that contain just one ingredient, but a whole lot of goodness. Foods such as lean meats, fruits and vegetables are bursting with the vitamins and minerals our bodies need to stay healthy. The infamous Mediterranean diet is packed full of real foods, and we’ve never heard anyone complaining about Greek salads and Spanish paellas! To pack more real foods into your diet, base your food shop around the perimeter of the supermarket – this is

where the majority of fresh food is displayed – and always make a shopping list. This will keep you focussed on what you need, stop you from being seduced by crisps on offer, and most importantly; saves on food waste.

Get moving! The NHS describes it as “the miracle cure we’ve all been waiting for”. Free, easy to take and no prescription necessary; exercise is the key to leading a healthier, happier life. Not only does exercise aid the physical side of heath – aiding in weight loss and strengthening muscles and bones – it also has a remarkable impact on our mental health. It produces changes in the parts of the brain that regulate stress and anxiety and can increase brain sensitivity for the hormones serotonin, the so-called ‘happy hormone’, relieving feelings of depression.

Get outside Coupled with exercise, getting some fresh air can do us the world of good. Even a gentle stroll outdoors can dramatically improve our mood, giving us a new perspective on things. In a day and age where we always seem to be too busy to make time for ourselves, taking short breaks to disconnect from technology and the general hustle and

bustle of modern life is increasingly important. With the beautiful Peak District National Park right on our doorstep, not to mention the Bradfield reservoirs and the wonderful Sheffield parks, there’s really no excuse to stay inside. Filled with spectacular scenery, it’s a fantastic place to spend the day outside in the company of good friends.

Sleep more Poor sleep is linked with depression and poor brain functionality. Along with feeling lethargic and grumpy, a poor night’s sleep affects not only ourselves, but also the people around us. Getting into a great sleep routine means you are more productive the following day, are able to absorb new knowledge or memories, and ultimately feel more fulfilled and productive. Unfortunately, getting a good night’s rest is often easier said than done, with many of us prioritising work or screen time over much needed shut eye. To establish a better night time routine, choose an activity to help you wind down. Whether reading or meditating, anything that doesn’t involve the glaring light of a TV, laptop or phone screen will propel the relaxation process, sending a message to your brain that it’s time to switch off. www.rmcmedia.co.uk 21

Winning formula AFTER FINDING CONVENTIONAL SLIMMING CLUBS DIDN’T WORK FOR HER, ANNE KAY TURNED TO MEDISCULPT WEIGHT LOSS THERAPY FROM G&M HEALTHCARE – AND THE RESULTS HAVE BEEN ASTOUNDING. fter a lifetime of struggling and failing to control her weight, Anne Kay feared she would never shed the excess pounds that were the source of so much frustration. But after losing the best part of three stones in just under three months, she finally believes she is going to reach her ideal weight – and it’s all down to Medisculpt Weight Loss Therapy from G&M Healthcare. When Anne met G&M’s senior clinical therapist Sarah O’Brien for a free informal consultation, she was convinced she was one of those people for whom diets just did not work. “I’m 60 and I’ve been dieting since I was 13. Conventional slimming clubs did not work for me. I’d lose weight at first but it would all come back on. When you’ve lost just three pounds in nine weeks you know it’s not working.” But all that changed when Anne agreed to try Medisculpt Weight Loss Therapy – the pounds simply fell away from the start. More importantly, the weight loss continued week after week. “I have never felt better in my life,” she says. “I feel full of energy and instead of sitting on the couch watching TV, I am out in the world, gardening and enjoying life. “I’ve never lost so much weight in such a short space of time and that’s where the motivation comes from, because you can see the results week by week.” Anne is on a controlled eating plan consisting of around 40 varieties of sachet foods alongside a list of unlimited vegetables and fruit. She combines the diet with two treatments: LPG (lipo-masage which reduces cellulite and sagging skin, giving a toned look) and BTL Vanquish ME (a non-surgical option for people with stubborn fat pockets). “The treatments reduce the chance of being left with loose skin following the weight loss, and they have worked brilliantly for me,” says Anne. “Everyone who knows me has noticed a massive difference. I even managed to lose half a stone when I went on ten-day holiday to Cornwall. Normally I’d have

A

BEFORE

been giving in to temptation and eating cream teas and pasties, but I resisted and ate salads instead.” Anne visits G&M Healthcare once a week for a weigh-in and a health check, and she feels certain the advice and encouragement she receives from the whole team, including her therapist Sarah and Dr Grace Hula, is a key element in her success. When Anne loses another couple of pounds she will reach a total weight loss of exactly three stones and from then on her diet will change, introducing more normal food in a controlled way and reducing the number of sachets. Her target is a total weight loss of four and a half stones and she is convinced that after a lifetime of failed diets she will achieve her goal. “Everyone is so supportive, I really can’t fault the treatment I get. I’d certainly recommend the Medisculpt diet and the team at G&M Healthcare. I’d urge anybody struggling with their weight to contact them for an initial consultation and change their life – because basically that is what it has done for me.”

WELCOME... Chair’s Message: September is upon us and with it comes the arrival of autumn – where did all those summer months go? But what a summer it was! I was honoured and delighted to attend a procession of fantastic galas, garden parties, carnivals and festivals from Oughtibridge, Worrall and Wharncliffe to Stannington and Broomhead – each bigger and better than ever before. We had a fabulous day celebrating Stannington Carnival’s 28th birthday on 13 July. The new SCOFF committee excelled themselves with a band led parade, followed by a smorgasbord of carnival delights throughout the day. Over the page, you can enjoy a collage of colour from this year’s Parish galas. On 12 July, Oughtibridge School launched BeeFest, working with the David and Jane Richards Foundation to install

hives, introduce bee colonies and provide beekeeping training. Cllr. Nigel Clark and I enjoyed a thoroughly enjoyable day exploring the newly installed bee enclosure and classroom bee projects. Looking ahead to 7 September, Stocksbridge Town Council have teamed with Sheffield and Rotherham Wildlife Trust to host a day of activities in celebration of our local woodlands and the health benefits they bring. On 14 September, Ecclesfield takeover with National and Cultural heritage of Ancient woodlands, which includes a focus on Greno Woods. Bradfield’s event will take place on 21 September at St Nicholas Church, commencing with a 6pm talk on biodiversity of the woodlands, followed by a bat walk. Full details are available on our website. I would like to welcome Ryan Atkin, our new apprentice groundsman to Bradfield Parish. Ryan will be working alongside our

existing team and be seconded to groups and organisations working for the Parish. It has be gratifying to see first-hand the time and dedication that goes into all our Parish festivities. Our village committees really are to be applauded and are already busy planning next year’s galas and carnivals. I look forward to seeing what 2020 brings. Finally, to continue with our ‘articles of interest’ from around the Parish Ward, I have asked our archivist Malcolm Nunn to pen a few notes from Bradfield titled The Watch House. Chairman Councillor Stephen Bennett

The Watch House: Malcom Nunn

The High Bradfield Watch House, then (above) and now (below)

High Bradfield Watch House was built around 1830 – although in some records it states it was built around 1745, as there may have been a Gate House built on the site, which went on to be replaced by the current building. In the first quarter of the 19th century, newly interred bodies we being dug up and sold for medical science and a duo known as Burke and Haire were probably the most notorious of the perpetrators who travelled the country on this cause. Churches up and down the country were faced with a problem; how do we counter this? And the most common solution was to build a Watch House next to the graveyard, constructed in a particular shape, so that the Verger/Sexton could see all angles of the churchyard from his residence and apprehend any wrongdoers. It is my understanding that there only around three of these buildings still used by church authorities, whilst others have either been demolished or sold for private dwellings. High Bradfield Watch Tower is part of a group of properties owned and managed by Bradfield Feoffes, a group within the church organisation that looks after land and property belonging to the churchyard. In the late 1980s/early 1990s work took place to improve standards and an extension was added, which is now occupied by the current Verger of the Church.

Worrall Gala and Festival After a rainy morning, the sun shone just in time for the start of the Worrall Gala and Festival. The afternoon kicked off with music from the Oughtibridge Training Band, followed by performances from White Rose Irish Dancers and Worrall Line Dancers. Fiona of Dance Dynamique led a dance workshop and there were an abundance of stalls afforded by Bradfield Parish Council, Worrall Environment Group and Ray of Hope, a parent led support group supporting families of children with additional needs. For the little ones, there was an opportunity to meet and handle reptiles, guinea pigs and other small animals with Sheffield-based Animal Club. As the Gala activities finished, the evening’s festivities began and included performances by Dogwood Rose, Just Alfie, Santiago Kings, Richard Brown, Jack’s Rake and Broken Flowers.

Wharncliffe With so much to see and do, crowds flocked in their droves to the Wharncliffe Garden Party and all seemed to be enjoying the midsummer festivities.

Stannington Carnival For the past 28 years, Stannington Carnival has been amazing crowds with a mix of top quality acts, conjurers, parades and fairground rides and with over 3000 people in attendance, 2019 was even bigger and better than ever before. The Carnival Parade and Cadets band marched into Stannington Park, getting the festivities off to a tuneful start and the opening ceremony was performed by The Stannington Players. Cll. Stephen Bennett was given the difficult task of judging the fancy dress competition and an eclectic mix of brass bands, choirs, belly dancing and kite flying followed into the July sunshine.

NEW COUNCILLOR PROFILES Councillor Chris Carter I am Chris Carter, and I’ve lived in Stannington for about 40 years. I have worked as a project engineer at British Steel, as a researcher in material science at the University of Sheffield, and as a lecturer in computing at Sheffield Hallam. I am very concerned about global warming, and am keen to promote technologies and policies that can help with it. I am the coordinator of the Deaf Awareness Group of Sheffield U3A, and I enjoy classical music and walking.

Councillor Penny Baker

BeeFest The David and Jane Richards Foundation work hard to educate, empower and improve the lives of children through hands on programmes. There big push at present is bees, providing hives, bee colonies and training for beekeepers throughout the country. The Friends of Oughtibridge School were fundraising to establish bee colonies at the school, so brought in the help of the Foundation, alongside Bradfield Parish Council, who provided a grant to build a viewing shed, state of the art, bespoke viewing and changing facility. Alongside representatives from the Foundation, Neil Roberts and Jim Dugmore from Oughtibridge School and Cllr Stephen Bennett and Cllr Nigel Clark from Bradfield Parish Council enjoyed a tour around the bee enclosure and classrooms, to see first-hand the work different year groups were doing on the project. They also attended an informative lecture on bee keeping in the school hall.

I am Penny Baker, currently a Sheffield City Councillor and Bradfield Parish Councillor. I was Lady Mayoress of Sheffield in 2001/02, and am married to city councillor David Baker. We have a large family and I’m now a grandmother. I live locally and love the green space and local heritage that can be found in the area.

Councillor Terry Barrow I have lived in Oughtibridge for over 30 years, raised three children here and now have a grandson in the village. I care deeply about this area and all the families and individuals who live here, use its amenities or simply pass through. I want it to be safe, welcoming and fun. I have a long history of campaigning on a multitude of issues, including education, road safety, planning applications, flood defences and policing, and my hope is that we can work together to retain the best features of our village whilst managing some of the growth and changes that are

coming our way. I very much look forward to trying to represent you in this.

Councillor Nigel Clark I am a retired Adult Education Lecturer and Trade Union Officer. A Local Historian., originally from Stocksbridge, worked at Stannington, (later Loxley) College from 1980. I have lived in Wharncliffe Side since 2002. Locally we face big challenges. Major housing developments will put pressure on local resources and add to existing traffic and environmental problems. In addition, there is a major concern that local facilities, schools, and health care, but also local shops will be affected. The other issue is the nature of this new housing, we are faced with the type of houses the developers want to build, not necessarily what we need. The Parish Council can be an important voice in making sure that these developments are a benefit to our community.

Councillor Pete Shaw I began my working life in the refactory industry and later began studying with the Open University. In 1980 I then trained as a teacher, entering a period in my life that brought great enjoyment. Now retired, my current interests include performing at open mic events, folk clubs and with Oughtibridge Choir. My other passion is that of gardening, mainly growing fruit and vegetables. As a member of the Parish Council, I am looking forward to the opportunity to help improve the everyday lives of local residents and businesses, transport facilities and the local environment, reducing the impact of traffic passing through the village.

ASK THE EXPERT

PAUL SMITH / Moonlight Textiles Type of business.

Maker, supplier and installer of bespoke soft furnishings, curtains, tracks, poles and blinds. What is your role in your company?

Managing director. How did you end up in this type of business?

I helped in the family party-planning business whilst at college. By the time I’d finished my studies the business had progressed onto selling ready-made curtains, and it was naturally assumed that I’d join the business full-time. Fast-forward over 30 years and we now specialise in all aspects of made-tomeasure soft furnishings, curtains, blinds, tracking and related products. Why is it important to seek out the best possible advice?

Soft furnishings and tracking can be a major purchase and quite technical at times, it could be an expensive exercise to get it wrong. Companies like ours are experienced in advising on suitable

fabrics and finishes, taking responsibility for the correct measurements and managing the professional making and installation of the end product. What specific expertise can you offer our readers?

Many of the Moonlight team have been with us for more than 20 years and have a wealth of experience in the trade. We can therefore offer qualified, informed advice to our customers in store or within their home. We are not fazed by specialist products like bay poles, decorative metal bay tracks, motorised products and blinds. We are unique in the fact that we have our own in-house workroom on the premises, something that we are particularly proud of. Our contract division has been established almost 30 years advising on, and providing the very latest in heavy commercial applications, cubicle rails, specialist anti-ligature systems, flameretardant fabrics and blinds. When it comes to bespoke products of any type, I’d always advise that you rely on the experts to provide a quality finish and service.

Any future developments you would like to tell us about?

We are constantly improving our workroom facilities and are looking to invest in new members wanting to join our team. It is paramount that we retain the control and uniqueness of producing our bespoke made products in-house and on the premises. Motorisation of blinds and curtain tracking has become particularly popular and is regularly requested after. It is important that we keep abreast of the fast paced changes in technology affecting this aspect of our industry – we always have done and will always endeavour to in the future.

DEVELOPMENT

The changing face of north Sheffield

ASHLEY BIRCH LOOKS AT PRESENT AND FUTURE DEVELOPMENTS TAKING SHAPE IN HILLSBOROUGH AND THE SURROUNDING AREA. ow if you ask us, S6 is already as pretty as a picture, but nevertheless, it seems developers are intent on giving the area a bit of a facelift with plans for development going in left, right and well, Hillsborough centre. We’ve already had interesting new bars like Brass Monkey, Northern Monkey and Sports Shack pop up, and the arrival of Tramlines in Hillsborough Park in 2018 was a massive coup for our area, but there’s also a whole host of other plans you might be less familiar with, from dementia cafes and social housing to adventure tourism and conferencing centres. Here’s a handy round-up of current S6 developments in the works.

N

The proposed Sheffield Ski Village will be home to an all-new modern ski slope

Sheffield Ski Village

Penistone Road Retail Park Further down Penistone Road, on an area local kids used to call ‘the wastelands’, a £25million scheme has been proposed to redevelop the site as a retail park, complete with drive-through restaurants, retail and industrial units. The site, opposite Hillsborough Stadium, is currently used as a car park on match days, and developers say they have received interest from national chains, with potential occupiers including a discount food store, a coffee shop and builders’ merchants. Plans are yet to be submitted, but it’s promising signs for my teenage wasteland. 50 www.rmcmedia.co.uk

In recent times the only thing coming out of Sheffield’s disused ski village has been smoke, billowing up from one of the numerous acts of arson. But all that could be about to change, as Sheffield City Council recently revealed it has signed an ‘agreement for lease’ of the 21-hectare site with EXTREME, a global sports and lifestyle brand with a TV channel that broadcasts in 68 countries. The agreement will allow developers to work towards ambitious plans for an all-new modern ski slope, complete with mountain biking trails, a hub building with shops, bars and restaurants, and an adventure tourism hotel. Councillor Mazher Iqbal, Cabinet Member for Business and Investment for Sheffield City Council, said: “This much anticipated project to create an internationally-recognised destination just a mile from our city centre is now even closer to becoming a reality. “We believe that Extreme Destinations share our vision for this site to be the jewel in the crown of Sheffield’s Outdoor City Strategy. They have engaged with local stakeholders and the international sports market and this agreement for lease is supported by both the council and developer.” Chris Lewis, Destination Development Director (UK) for Extreme, said: “The signing of the agreement is a huge milestone following substantial collaborative work by the council and Extreme teams. “Working closely with the local community and other key stakeholders, this will now allow for the full design of the site to be developed, creating a high-quality destination which integrates into the wider Parkwood Springs site. We can’t wait to deliver and show the public the exciting Extreme destination we have planned for the city of Sheffield.”

DEVELOPMENT

Owlerton Events and Conferencing Over on Penistone Road, you’ve probably spotted the framework going up for a new £6million multi-purpose conference and events venue. The OEC – Owlerton Events & Conferencing to give its full title – is taking shape rapidly in preparation for its spectacular autumn launch, and the state-of-the-art venue looks set to take the city by storm. With a 500-seater capacity, OEC will be the perfect spot for large-scale weddings, parties and celebrations of all kinds, with head chef Sam Lindsay overseeing a contemporary kitchen that can cater for all dietary needs and any requirements from casual dining to the finest banqueting menus. They’ve even got their own house band, in local lads and well-known wedding band, The Bootleggers.

“It’s going to be amazing,” says venue director Gary Cook. “OEC will be synonymous with a five-star quality finish at a very fair price.” The first wedding is already booked for November and they are now taking bookings for events of all shapes and sizes.

Hillsborough Park Dementia café Earlier this year, campaigners hoping to revive Hillsborough Park’s former coach house as a dementia-friendly older people’s centre and cafe had much cause for celebration, after their initial bid to the Heritage Lottery Fund was granted. The news meant the planned redevelopment of the derelict listed building moved one step closer, after it was announced the project had received an initial National Lottery support of £50,000. It means the abandoned coach house, last used as a munitions store during the Second World War, could be open for use by the whole community by the end of 2020. Age UK Sheffield says the development funding of £49,700 will enable the charity to progress plans and apply for a full National Lottery Grant later this year and a fundraising campaign is already under way. Age UK Sheffield Chief Executive, Steve Chu, said: “This is absolutely fantastic news. Thanks to National Lottery players we have a real opportunity to develop The Old Coach House into a thriving community venue for older people in Sheffield and local people in Hillsborough. Importantly, through this project, we can bring back into use a derelict listed building that would otherwise soon be lost.” Toilets and a café in Hillsborough Park, bring it on!

Hillsborough Exchange Shopping Centre The Precinct lies at the heart of Hillsborough, but let’s be honest, it’s knocking on a bit. So plans submitted on behalf of Killultagh Estates for a £10million redevelopment of the centre, creating new commercial units and social housing, come as very welcome news. Planning permission has been sought for a new five-storey building, featuring 28,500 sq ft of new commercial floors space on the ground floor and up to 77 new one, two and three-bed homes exclusively for social-rented housing purposes. A planning statement submitted as part of the application said: “The proposed development will ensure the ongoing vitality and viability of Hillsborough Exchange Shopping Centre. It is a positive proposal geared towards ensuring that the centre serves the current and future needs of the residents of Hillsborough.” At present, the applicant is still awaiting a decision from Sheffield City Council. www.rmcmedia.co.uk 51

Sisley White Ginger Contouring Oil for legs 150ml £125 www.sisley-paris.com White Ginger Contouring Oil uses four targeted actions to provide allencompassing, effective relief for legs that feel heavy. The melt-in texture glides onto the skin, perfectly enveloping curves from ankle to hip for an extended massage, which is crucial to the efficacy of the product, and the fresh, invigorating fragrance exalts the senses like an infusion of oxygen. Feelings of discomfort are soothed instantly; legs feel lighter, leaving the skin nourished and softened. Charlotte Tilbury Supermodel Body Body Highlighter 100ml £45 www.charlottetilbury.com We’re sold at the name alone. The secret is the luminous, light-reflective formula which promises to optically elongate limbs. Charlotte has poured all of her makeup artist know-how into creating this incredible ‘slimmer shimmer’ that acts like shapewear lingerie for the skin. Enriched with FermiProtect to firm the skin and sculpt your contours, and a precious-metal highlighter mix to recreate her secret “celebrity limb trick” – simply highlight down the centre of arms, legs and across the chest to create the illusion of leaner, longer limbs and massage in and hey presto, catwalkworthy pins in a flash. Elemis Targeted Toning Body Moisturiser 200ml £69 www.elemis.com Clinically proven to reduce the appearance of cellulite when combined with daily massage, this body moisturiser harnesses the power of Nigari Salt and Jania Rubens to help reduce the appearance of dimpling and promote more refined, even-looking skin. The unique transformation texture transcends from a rich cream to a delicate oil when applied to encourage massage, which

complements an anti-cellulite routine. Helps to tighten, tone and leave skin visibly firmer and smoother. Apply morning and evening to cellulite prone areas, such as thighs, stomach and back of arms. Sarah Chapman The Bodylift Body Massager Tool £32 www.sarahchapman.com This unique body massager eases muscle tension and helps encourage the lymphatic system to drain toxins, reducing the appearance of water retention and stimulating circulation to result in smooth, sculpted, toned and defined limbs. Push and roll The Bodylift, allowing the wishbone to separate. Recommended for upper arms, thighs, buttocks and calves. If you have any health problems, skin conditions or your skin is fragile, consult your doctor before use. Sol De Janeiro Brazilian Bum Bum Cream 240ml £44 available in store at Harvey Nichols, Leeds or visit www.harveynichols.com Sol de Janeiro Brazilian Bum Bum Cream is an addictive full body cream inspired by the Brazilians’ favourite feature: the bottom, the bum or la derriére – which, pronounced “boom boom” in Brazil, are a nation-wide obsession. This wondrous cream is rich in Guaraná, a native Amazonian plant whose fruit contains one of the most potent forms of caffeine on the planet. Guaraná caffeine helps stimulate circulation and together with SOL’s Brazilian beauty blend of Cupuaçu Butter, Açaí and Coconut Oil, helps smooth and tighten skin for the most positively pinchable posterior. The fast-absorbing cream contains just enough mica to add a perfect Brazilian glow while the signature pistachio and salted caramel scent will leave you “cheirosa” (sheh-rō-zah): smelling incredibly delicious.

Why pay more? PA JEWELLERY LOOK AT WHY ENTERING THE MARKET FOR A SECOND-HAND ROLEX COULD BE THE SMART MOVE. ou look on the Rolex website, find a watch that you love and then try to find one for sale, only to see shops asking £100s if not £1,000s more than the recommended retail price for a second-hand watch. It seems crazy; why would someone pay more than the new price for a used watch? The answer is availability. Thanks to Rolex’s policy of producing fewer watches than they can sell, some models have waiting lists of well over five years. Therefore, if you decide to buy one of the sought-after Rolex models you have two options; either pay more to get one now or put your name on a waiting list to get a brand new one in the future. Because of the apparent saving available, waiting for a new one can look appealing. However, even if you put your name on a waiting list now there is no guarantee that you will pay the current retail price. The amount you will pay is not fixed at the point of placing an order and you will be expected to pay the retail price at the point of delivery. Thanks to the devaluation of the pound the UK is currently one of the cheapest places in the world to buy luxury watches. For example, the UK RRP of the Rolex Submariner pictured here is currently £6,550 while in mainland Europe it sells for €7,850 or approximately £7,400 at current exchange rates. Historically, Rolex haven’t allowed any substantial price differences between countries to stand for long, so everyone in the watch industry is expecting a price rise in the UK to bring us in line with the rest of Europe before the end of the year. If you put your name on a waiting list with a UK Rolex stockist now you would be lucky to take delivery of your watch within five years. It’s fair to expect that the price would increase at least twice or maybe even three more times before then and a reasonable estimate is that it will retail at around £9,000 by

Cats and dogs in our warm houses provide the ideal breeding environment, infestation is rapid and very quickly our pets are suffering. The fleas will continue to reproduce in carpets and bedding.

CHRISTMAS

Festive fun THE COUNTDOWN TO THE CHRISTMAS PARTY SEASON IS ON. ith the warm weather drawing to the close and summer holidays a distant memory, it can only mean one thing – the countdown to Christmas and the festive party season is on. This December, across the region, families, friends and work colleagues will be putting on their glad rags and enjoying a drink – or two – together. A well organised party in a quality, popular venue is a fabulous thing to look forward to as the year draws to a close. If it’s a works outing, it is not only good for team morale but a great bonding experience for all. The key to a really good, memorable Christmas work ‘do’ is to make sure it is booked well in advance, so you’re not left to find out every venue is fully booked, leaving the only option to be an office party, telling cheesy Christmas cracker jokes whilst dancing around the photocopier to Bowie. It doesn’t have to be the manager who is tasked with the booking of the party either. Hand the party planning over to the one in the office who loves to socialise, as they will relish the task of getting everyone on board and booking a fantastic Christmas party. So whether it’s a lavish five-course spread at a top restaurant, a dinner and dance evening or a traditional turkey meal with all the trimmings at a cosy pub, there are plenty of venues to choose from that can accommodate your festive plans, whether you are a small business with a handful of staff, or a huge organisation with hundreds of employees. So, no matter what the budget or scale of your party get into the Christmas spirit and get your party booked now. If you’re short of ideas of what to do and where to host your Christmas party this year, take a look at some of the fabulous venues showcased here.

A special service A TRADITIONAL YET FORWARD-THINKING FAMILY-RUN BUSINESS, ERIC EYRE FUNERAL SERVICE CAN GUIDE YOU THROUGH THE MOST DIFFICULT OF TIMES. t is never easy to plan a loved one’s funeral. Eric Eyre Funeral Service understand how difficult the process can be and offer a bespoke funeral service, whilst continuing to uphold traditional values. Established since 1864, Eric took over the business in 1955 and has been looking after families in the local community and surrounding areas of Sheffield, Barnsley and Rotherham ever since. A second branch was later opened at Sheffield Lane Top in 2014. With decades of experience in guiding bereaved clients through this difficult time, Eric Eyre provide a professional yet personal service, caring for you and your loved ones while facilitating the necessary funeral arrangements and ensuring your wishes are carried out with care and compassion. The team are available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, making sure someone is on hand at all times to support and assist you. Eric Eyre go the extra mile to provide an exceptional service and will take responsibility for ensuring everything is perfectly organised to deliver a fitting tribute to your loved one’s life story. “Just as other aspects of life have evolved, so has society’s approach to funerals, with modern funerals a very different affair to the traditional, formal black-tie events of years gone by,” says Wayne Pickering, manager at Eric Eyre Funeral Service. “For many, a funeral has moved from being a sombre affair to a celebration of life – complete with all that you’d expect from any other celebration, including music, entertainment and laughter. That is why we are always on hand to offer guidance on the many ways we can add a personal touch, just let us know what you would like, and we will do our upmost to meet your requirements.” Wayne joined as manager in 2017, following 20 years’ service at John Fairest. “I joined John Fairest as a hearse driver in 1997 and was later promoted to funeral director. It was there that I learnt how to arrange and conduct funerals, as well as the correct way to handle and

line coffins and how to prepare the deceased for the family to pay their respects. This gave me a full scope of all aspects of the job and after ten years of service I was offered the position of manager at a new branch on Abbey Lane, which I accepted, and is now a well-established business. “In September 2017 I was offered the opportunity to join the team at Eric Eyre’s and to ‘move back home’, as I say, as I live local to both branches. It was, and still is, a fantastic opportunity for me to grow and develop an already friendly family run business and provide our local community with a warm and compassionate service.”

Completing the team at High Green is John Walton, who has been with the company for over 20 years and Sharon Clayton who joined in July 2017, while Beverley Travis and Vera Gregory look after the branch at Sheffield Lane Top, which opened four years ago. “Our aim is to be there for our clients in every way that we can and make sure that their loved one is sent on their final journey exactly as they would have wanted. Your first point of contact will be the person you deal with throughout the process and whether the death has occurred at home, in a hospital or elsewhere, we will guide from the initial arrangement all the way through to

directing the funeral. We even provide help following the service, should you need any further support or guidance.” If you need help arranging a funeral for your loved one, contact Eric Eyre Funeral Service. DO YOU REMEMBER?

Last month:

his month we revisit some familiar streets from way back when. As usual the clothing is a bit of a clue along with the only form of transport visible in the three photographs – a horse and trap. Have you seen these photos before? Do they jog your memory? As for last month, a few of you must have recognised Barry Couldwell, a regular contributor to this feature, strolling in a splendid cowboy outfit at Worrall Gala during the 1950s. Barry tells us: “The scarecrow was one of the Hartley twins, Minnie or Nelly. I was the cowboy.” Our second image, also supplied by Barry, showed a ladies’ outing from the Blue Ball Inn from the 1930s. It’s great to bring back so many memories for Sixer readers, now let’s see how you get on this month.

HEROES

Providing a ‘home from home’

AFTER THEIR ELDEST SON WAS TAKEN ILL AT A YOUNG AGE, MARCUS AND LAURA LEVERTON ARE FOREVER GRATEFUL TO THE SICK CHILDREN’S TRUST WHO HELPED THEM THROUGH THE MOST DIFFICULT OF TIMES. THEY NOW HELP TO RAISE MONEY FOR THIS VERY WORTHWHILE CAUSE. t just 17 months old, Harry Leverton developed a series of viral infections that rendered him unable to breathe and as a result he was rushed to The Sheffield Children’s Hospital, where he was put into a medically induced coma. Harry received cutting-edge treatment and was transferred to the Intensive Care Unit but later suffered an unrelated bowel perforation which left doctor’s fighting for his life. “Harry was diagnosed on a Monday and within two hours he was put into an induced coma,” said Harry’s father, Marcus. “48 hours later he was fighting for his life – it all happened so fast. I was in complete shock and I couldn’t bear to leave his side. “My wife, Laura and I were both really frightened, and it dawned on us that we couldn’t stay on the ward with Harry, but we didn’t want to travel all the way home either as we knew we wouldn’t be able to cope with being that far away.” After days of unimaginable stress with little food or sleep, The Sick Children’s Trust were able to offer Marcus and Laura a special ‘Home from Home’ just minutes’ from Harry’s bedside. “The Sick Children’s Trust organised for us to stay in a room located within the Children’s Hospital so that we could be close to our son in his hour of need. “We cannot thank them enough for their support, the accommodation they provide is simply amazing and without it, we’d have been faced with long and distressing journeys home and expensive hotel bills. I do not know how we would have coped with the emotional and physical stress of caring for our critically ill child and travelling.” The Sick Children’s Trust believes that keeping families together significantly improves the recovery of seriously ill children. They provide free, high-quality

accommodation, as well as emotional and practical support to families with sick children in hospitals across the UK. “The Trust gave us a sanctuary, somewhere to go and have some alone time, to cry and to get ourselves together, so that we could be strong for our family. When you’re at the lowest point and you’re trying to deal with the prospect of your child developing a life threatening illness – one that could have had a very different outcome – any support is amazing, but a bedroom close to our son where we could rest and shower was the key to keeping us both sane. “We are so grateful to The Sick Children’s Trust and to all the amazing staff at The Sheffield Children’s Hospital.” Harry is now a healthy and happy 11year-old boy and in 2012, Marcus and Laura gave birth to Harry’s little brother, Samuel. As a thank you to The Sick Children’s Trust for the care and support they received when they and their family needed it most, they have devoted what spare time they have to raising a whopping £210,000 over the past ten years. From bake sales and fundraising in their local community to a 191-mile bike ride from Buckingham Palace to Sheffield in a single day, Marcus and Laura campaign tirelessly to help ensure every family with a seriously ill child like Harry will be able to stay together, just minutes from their child’s bed during their treatment. The fundraising duo also organise a glamourous bi-annual black-tie evening at the Casa Hotel, Chesterfield which sees over £30,000 a year raised in support of The Sick Children’s Trust. “The room was a lifeline while Harry was undergoing his operation and I made a promise that if he came back to us, I would do all that I could to help raise funds and awareness. “We’ve watched our black-tie evening grow year on year, so much so that we outgrew our first and second venue and I would like to take this opportunity to say a big thank you to everyone involved for your incredibly kind donations and many varied and fantastic contributions. “Most recently we held a fundraising day in our local community and as well as working towards our final black-tie evening of the year, we have another event in the pipeline, too.

“Our mission is to raise £1,000,000 before we pass on the torch down to Harry and Samuel, and we will do everything we can to give something back to the incredible charity that helped us stay together as a family. We would not and could not have coped without their support. “The Sick Children’s trust is a nonGovernment funded charity that relies 100 per cent on charitable donations to survive. It costs around £30 per room per night to offer a family a safe space close to their child’s bedside and the charity funds two houses in Sheffield alone. Treetops House, which is where we stayed, offers 13 rooms and the latest

development, Magnolia House offers 11 rooms. “That means the charity must raise over £260,000 a year to help families across Sheffield and our region, and they have facilities in Newcastle, Leeds, Cambridge and London, too! Every donation (however big or small) has been and will be a vital one – thank you.” To find out more about and to support Marcus and Laura’s fundraising, visit: https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/m arcus-leverton2019 and to find out more about The Sick Children’s Trust, visit: www.sickchildrenstrust.org

Majorly impressive THE OPEN CHAMPIONSHIP RECENTLY RETURNED TO ROYAL PORTRUSH AFTER AN ABSENCE OF 68 YEARS TO HUGE ACCLAIM. A FEW WEEKS BEFORE THE CHAMPIONSHIP JOHN MURPHY VISITED THE COURSE AND IS NOT SURPRISED THAT IT IS NOW BEING HAILED BY MANY AS THE BEST LINKS COURSE TO HOST A GOLFING MAJOR. n this summer of glorious sporting events one of the stand-out highlights must be the epic 148th Open Championship played at Royal Portrush last month, culminating in Ireland’s latest favourite son, Shane Lowry, being crowned Champion Golfer of The Year. The headline grabbing story was obviously Lowry’s win on home soil – the first Irishman to ever do so. But there were so much else to admire and enjoy about the Open and so many other stories lasting from first tee-off in the early hours of day one to the last balls being smacked down the first hole on the final day by this year’s concluding pairing, Lowry and Southport’s very own, Tommy Fleetwood. The event was simply sensational and was more than the organisers could, in their wildest dreams, have hoped for as the Open returned to Royal Portrush after 68 years. This year’s tournament and the one in 1951 being the only two times the Open has been staged outside England or Scotland. The level of unanimous acclaim which greeted the championship as the final curtain fell can be gauged by the fact that there is now a very real prospect that the course will get the nod for a return in 2024 ahead of the more pedestrian Royal Lytham. So aside from the marvellous synergy of Lowry’s victory in the most historical

of majors what else made the event such a run-away success? First and foremost must be the course itself. It would be hard to find a more beautiful strip of land anywhere in the world. A spectacular quilted green patchwork separated from the rolling Atlantic waves by white beaches (“strands”) that stretch for as long as the eye can see below vast, rugged cliffs. Standing on the fifth green, yards from a cliff edge with the sun glistening on the water and reflecting the whites and greys of the beaches and cliffs you could be forgiven for thinking that you are standing on the edge of the world. Further down the coastline is the mystical Giant’s Causeway and closer still, perched on the headland, is Dunluce Castle after which the famous links of Royal Portrush is named. This tiny

corner of Northern Ireland is a magical place of stunning beauty and dreams. It’s little wonder that much of Game of Thrones was filmed here. Lowry himself seemed to have stepped off the Causeway as he strode down fairways and smited balls out of the desperate rough with heroic strength and length: maybe he could have a part in the next run of the cult series? The design of the course is also fantastic. The Harry Colt (also responsible for designing Sheffield’s Hallamshire course) masterpiece is essentially a very fair course and as such is accessible to the average club golfer. There are very few blind shots and the fairways are quite generous, with the exception of the first with out-of-bounds to right and left as Rory McIlroy found to his horror with the opening shot of his ill-fated challenge. Interestingly no two consecutive holes run in the same direction and there is a great set of par 3s, with the highlight being the aptly named Calamity 16th. The drive is over 200 yards, often into the wind, and there is a sheer valley of thick rough running all along the right-hand side of the hole. The two new holes at 7 and 8 have also been seamlessly incorporated into the Colt course, as if they have been everpresent. The dangers come when balls stray off the fairway and end up in the strangling rough, comprised of tall fescue grass,

wild flowers, brambles and bracken. Normally moving the ball some 50 yards is success, so seeing the professionals hit the ball so far out of these dangerous spots is awe-inspiring. The narrow slithers of greens are also very difficult: up-turned saucers with run-off areas, humps, bumps and hollows. It was Lowry’s nerveless chipping onto these manicured saucers that set him apart in his final two rounds. The condition of the course also impressed commentators and competitors alike. BBC’s Ken Brown stated that Royal Portrush was in the best ever condition for an Open that he had seen. Sky’s Rich Beem commented that Royal Portrush was the best links course he had seen and had the opportunity to play on. Nick Faldo simply stated: “Absolutely the best.” Player after player also lined up to hail the venue. Among the fans was Paul Casey who labelled the course his favourite among the Open roster. The huge crowd and the atmosphere it created was another reason for the unmitigated success of the championship. At 240,000 this was the second largest gathering for an Open. The Irish welcomed its return with open arms, joy and such enthusiasm, boosted by Lowry’s heroics, that the noise was more akin to a football stadium than a

golf course and no-one complained. Of course golf in Northern Ireland is not solely about Royal Portrush. A few miles down the causeway coastal route is Portstewart, home of the 2017 Irish Open. The opening nine holes must be among the most spectacular opening holes in the United Kingdom with fairways snaking between monstrous sand dunes, where stunning views of the wild Atlantic can be found. One of the reasons why Royal Portrush was overlooked for so many years was concern over the surrounding infrastructure, especially accommodation. The nearby Bushmills Inn would have been full to the rafters and it makes a wonderful base from which to explore the area, golfing or not. Many spectators would have descended on Belfast, only an hour’s drive from this small part of the Antrim coastline. A grand city of Georgian, Victorian and Edwardian architecture, Belfast has many attractions including the iconic Titanic Belfast. The building, shaped like the bows of a ship, tells the story from the building of the liner in “boomtown” Belfast to its fateful maiden voyage. Half a day would do the impressive experience justice with highlights being a chair ride into the bowels of the ship as it is being constructed and a

mesmerising video show that takes you to every floor of the luxurious liner. Golfers will want to hone their skills before travelling north and nearby Belvoir and Galgorm Castle (home of this year’s Northern Irish Open) provide ideal tests. The former is a delightful tree-lined course, only three miles from the city centre and the latter is an attractive, tricky course with plenty of water hazards. It is also part of an impressive hotel complex which incorporates a very good restaurant. Belfast is a city of fine hospitality. The boutique Ten Square Hotel is a lively and comfortable base from which to explore and quality restaurants abound, with Café Parisien being particularly enjoyable. If it’s time to slate a thirst with a pint of creamy Guinness then Belfast’s oldest pub, The Crown Liquor Store, and McHugh’s, which is supposedly Belfast’s oldest building come highly recommended.
