welcome It’s with great pleasure I open Sheffield Beer Week 2018, year four and what a wonderful four beery years it’s been. Starting as a grass-roots event by two friends who loved beer, it’s grown into the city-wide celebration that we see today. Thanks in huge part to the venues and people who get behind and support the celebration of beer over ten days by hosting events and to those beer lovers who head out through Sheffield over the week. In 2018 we’re focusing on key strands which include celebrating the diversity of the beer scene and diminishing stereotypes through our celebration of women working in the beer industry. Let’s not harbour or promote stereotypes hey, it doesn’t do anyone any good or appeal to new people who discover craft beer. It’s great to feel part of a ‘beer culture’ but not at the detriment to others. Treat others how you would expect to be treated yourself and let’s welcome in people with open arms to make it even more diverse. That diversity will make the scene a more richer and interesting place to be. New for 2018 is our ‘Back to Beer Basics’ campaign with the use of venues as ingredient hubs – the four core ingredients water, malt, hops and yeast with the ‘crazy stuff’, aka adjuncts, showcased across five different hubs. Our Norwich City of Ale partnership continues and we’re working closely with an award-winning beer writer to host our ‘Beer City Twinning’ event. Finally the Yorkshire Beer photography mini-trail will showcase the fantastic work of Mark Newton with beery subjects spanning the end to end beer industry throughout Yorkshire. I met photographer Mark last year whilst he was shooting for his book project all about beer in Yorkshire. It was in that meeting that this idea formed and I knew after seeing his reels that we should put on an exhibition. I hope you have fun visiting each venue and exploring the wonderful beery city of Sheffield!

booming business
Pete Brown and Professor Vanessa Toulmin
Less than two years ago the University of Sheffield published Pete Brown’s remarkable report on the state of the beer industry in the Sheffield City Region. Notable headline facts included that Sheffield City Region can claim the title of birthplace of the UK craft beer revolution, the city has one brewery for every 23,991 people – 4.7 times more brewers per capita than Greater London and that on a typical day there are 400 different unique beers available in the city’s pubs. Pete Brown found that the Sheffield City Region has a booming beer trade of 57 breweries, 31 of which have opened in the last five years alone, who turn out over 1,000 different beers each year. Among the many proposals was the call for a bottling and canning facility to help the city’s beers reach a wider audience and an urge for the city to shout about its beer brilliance. Two years on from those recommendations the beer industry in the city is continuing to grow and although we don’t yet have a bottling and canning unit, at least four Sheffield breweries such as True North and Abbeydale are utilising mobile canning units and others possibly costing their own line. Sheffield Beer Week is now in year four and despite the loss of the Society of Independent Brewers’ conference is growing and accessing support and promotion from Welcome to Sheffield and the University of Sheffield via external funding. We are shouting about the great beers we produce and welcoming beer writers from across the UK to Sheffield Beer Week to sample the wide range of wares, and then hopefully spread the word. Other ideas are coming to fruition with greater cross city collaboration between breweries (e.g. Neepsend x Steel City x Lost Industry, Abbeydale x Thornbridge), creating a cornucopia of new brews for your palate. So heads up to all beer lovers, producers and supporters in the city and continue to support our local talent and their products. Finally, let us all raise a glass to Jules of Hop Hideout and organiser of Sheffield Beer Week, her love and dedication to promoting and organising this special week goes without saying – thank you.
Professor Vanessa Toulmin Director of City and Culture, University of Sheffield 5
‘Sheffield is the best-kept secret in the beer world’ This quote from internationally recognised beer writer and broadcaster Pete Brown, was one of the defining moments that made us want to shout out loud how good Sheffield really is. More people need to know this and experience it too. The city has such a warm and friendly vibe. 6
strands |||||||||||||||||| ‘Beer Tourism’ is a growing area and I see this as a crucial cog to Sheffield’s continued success and positive economic growth city-wide. Let’s celebrate the superb cask ale that’s brewed here whilst also exploring the flavour sensations found across the myriad of beer styles – porters, wild and sour ales, classic pilsners and more, packaged across bottle, can and keg! Let’s discover and share the great wealth of brewing heritage and skill in the city. The first recorded brewer founded in the city was Rawson’s in 1758. Though the brewing landscape has changed somewhat, with dips up and down, we’re currently enjoying a resurgence in independent craft brewing with nearly 20 in the city, heading up to over 50 in the Sheffield City Region. Beer and food is a growing area of interest with a few pubs really pushing the pairing combinations, and it would be great to see more restaurants offering great independent beer. We’re big advocates of the wonders of beer and food – so watch this space, as we really try to increase focus on this area. Community is the final key acting as the fabric of the city, enabling new breweries to begin, bringing like-minded souls together and supporting along the way.

strands |||||||||||||||||| Women Working in the Beer Industry Each year, organically, topics emerge that go on to form our additional strands for Sheffield Beer Week. Last year was gruelling in many ways and with that in mind we wanted to focus on challenging areas and with a positive approach. With the 100-year anniversary of the People’s Act in 2018, where the first steps in the UK for women to gain the vote began, we take this opportunity to celebrate women working in the beer industry from bar servers, to pub managers and beer business owners, to brewers, to bottle shop owners, to brewery marketeers to hop merchants and more – we’re highlighting that the beer scene is diverse, and better for it! We can’t wait to welcome beer consumer group Ladies That Beer (based in Liverpool) and brewster festival organisers Fem.Ale (Norwich and Brighton) to Sheffield to host socials and tastings, culminating in a brewsters tap takeover event at The Rutland Arms.
Brewsters’ Tap Takeover Venue: Rutland Arms, 86 Brown Street, S1 2BS Date: Saturday 10th March | Time: From 12pm | Cost: Free entry Website: https://www.facebook.com/rutland.arms
All day celebration of the skills of women in the brewing scene. There will be a Brewsters’ Tap Takeover event across cask, keg and bottle. Come down to join in the celebration and look out for socials and ticketed tastings from Ladies That Beer and Fem.Ale.
Ladies That Beer A group dedicated to encouraging the enjoyment of beer by women, regular social nights and events aim to welcome women who may want to try something new, or simply enjoy some old favourites, always washed down with great conversation. Events such as Sheffield Beer Week are a wonderful celebration of all that is good in beer and pub culture, and we’re delighted to be part of it. We’d love to see as many women as possible at our tasting and social at The Rutland Arms on 10 March. Most of all, we encourage everyone to go down to one of the bars or events, and ask for a recommendation or a taste of something interesting. In these days when you can easily drink a low alcohol hoppy number or a sharp mint-laced beer from the tap next to an unctuous whisky-aged stout, there really is a beer out there for you! To keep up with our events find us on Facebook or Twitter (@ladiesthatbeer).

strands |||||||||||||||||| Back to Beer Basics One of the noticeable areas we’ve observed from talking to those in the trade and consumers is the divide in understanding and knowledge but a thirst to know more. In addition to how to communicate and engage in a way people of all levels would understand and, let’s be honest enjoy. Our ‘Back to Beer Basics’ programme is an area we’re really enthused by and can’t wait to see the ingredients hubs and events in action. A quick run-down of 2018’s new hubs: • The Sheffield Tap: Malt • Sentinel Brewhouse: Water • The Devonshire Cat: Yeast • Shakespeares, Gibraltar Street: Hops • Hop Hideout: Adjuncts Each venue will have information on each ingredient for visitors to look at in their own time and host an event around their ingredient. We will also be running our popular ‘Twitter Hours’ throughout the week and will no doubt be covering a few of these areas online. So if you can’t make it in person, there’s opportunity to join in online: @SheffBeerWeek #sheffbeerweek
Sheffield x Norwich Our continued friendship with Norwich City of Ale grows, seeing a ‘Beer City Twinning’ event and tutored tasting at Neepsend Brew Co tap, The Wellington pub, with reciprocal hostings in Norwich. Both cities share a cityscape with a village vibe, good transport systems making it easy to explore, and a thirst for cask ale. We even discovered a deeper link – The Fat Cat brewery and tap in Norwich being inspired by Sheffield’s very own Kelham Island namesake. We’ve explored this partnership further with a collaboration brew using ingredients from both cities, brewed at Neepsend Brew Co. Award-winning national beer and travel writer Adrian Tierney-Jones, author of 1001 Beers to Try Before You Die, will be hosting this tutored tasting. 9

Yorkshire Beer Photography Trail The Yorkshire Beer project celebrates the county’s diverse brewing landscape and was formed by photographer Mark Newton and Hop & Barley magazine. His photos capture the soul of beer, the people, the places, the moments, the ingredients, the tools of production, the smile over the bar when you order your beer and a whole lot more. We urge you to head out around all the venues hosting mini-exhibitions to enjoy our ‘Yorkshire Beer Photography Trail’. Head to sheffieldbeerweek.co.uk for an up to date trail guide. 10
indie beer feast |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
get off to a flying start With an emphasis on great quality, independent, craft beer from the UK and around the globe, Indie Beer Feast launches its inaugural one-day beer celebration, starting small and focused, but with an ambition to grow over the coming years. The appetite and support for good beer in Sheffield is evident and it’s the right time to launch a beer festival, kicking off Sheffield Beer Week 2018 in style. The add-on element to Indie Beer Feast are a number of brewery bars which means festival attendees can chat to the breweries direct. In addition to a curated selection of street food vendors bringing the ‘feast’ component to life. Indie Beer Feast is also excited to work with the team at the iconic grade-listed Abbeydale Picture House, a 1920s cinema being brought back in to use by Sheffield‘s CADS. Being able to host a beer festival in such a wonderful, characterful building will add to the ambience of the event hugely, keeping it simple with the focus on flavoursome beer and delicious food, in the beautifully atmospheric Abbeydale Picture House.
