DO YOU REMEMBER?
ummer is here and the local carnival and gala season is in full swing. Here is one tradition that has survived over the decades, and this week’s photograph shows a North Sheffield event from quite a few decades back, with the locals definitely entering into the spirit of the occasion. Can anyone tell us what’s happening? Looking at last month’s photograph, those of us you who face the daily battle of trying to park a car anywhere near the main shopping street in Crookes, on any day of the week, may have smiled at the sight of just a single horse-drawn vehicle. Life seems to have been lived at a more leisurely pace back in 1910. It all looks very different today of course but there’s no mistaking the view of the bottom of Crookes and Mulehouse Road with St Thomas’ Church in the background.

JEWELLERY
A DIAMOND MAY BE FOREVER, BUT IT WASN’T ALWAYS THE FIRST CHOICE FOR COUPLES CHOOSING AN ENGAGEMENT RING. ZOE LEWIS, JEWELLER AND GEMMOLOGIST AT PA JEWELLERY, LOOKS BACK.
Planning a proposal? f you get engaged, the chances are that you will choose a diamond ring to celebrate the occasion; it is regarded as the classic style and for most of us there is no alternative. This ‘tradition’ is only a recent invention however, and before the 20th century it would have been unusual to see an engagement ring featuring only diamonds. Rings have been given to mark a betrothal since at least the middle ages. From the 12th century it became common amongst the wealthy families of Europe to give an engagement ring to be worn during the period before the wedding could take place. The first record of a diamond engagement ring is in 1477 when Archduke Maximilian of Austria gave his betrothed, Mary of Burgundy, a gold band set with flat pieces of diamond that formed the shape of an ‘M’. Although this sparked a trend amongst the very wealthiest in Europe, diamonds were a rare and expensive gemstone, unavailable to most. By the 19th century engagement rings had become ornate pieces, often combining coloured gemstones, small diamonds, enamel work and precious metals. Different coloured gemstones were worn together, with their names spelling out terms of endearment, such as ‘dearest’. Diamonds and seed pearls were popular accent stones with settings crafted in classic yellow or rose gold.
I
16 Sixer | www.sixermagazine.co.uk
The discovery of large diamond deposits in South Africa in the late 19th century meant prices fell as supply flooded the market. This would eventually lead to a huge transformation in the market; diamonds were no longer the preserve of the very wealthy. Early in the 20th century two world wars and an economic crash meant people did not have money to spend on luxuries. But following the end of the Second World War, De Beers stepped in with their huge, and hugely successful, advertising campaign that made a diamond ring seem indispensable when proposing. Their slogan, ‘A Diamond is Forever’, is still used to this day. It transformed the way the public thought about diamonds. In America, only ten per cent of women had a diamond engagement ring in the 1930s; by the 1970s this had increased to 80 per cent. Diamonds have always been valued for their incomparable hardness, brilliance and lustre. For centuries people believed them to be indestructible, and although we now know that it is possible to break or chip a diamond, its ability to resist the normal wear and scratching seen on other gems means it is rightly regarded as an incredibly durable material. Its adamantine lustre is brighter than any other gem, and its combination of bright brilliance and dazzling fire make it an exceptionally beautiful stone. @SixerRMC
Over the decades fashions have changed and trends have come and gone, influenced by celebrity engagements, changes in culture, and developments in cutting and setting. In the 1980s the marriage of Prince Charles to Lady Diana Spencer made sapphire and diamond cluster designs fashionable. Changes in the way we shop mean there is now more choice available than ever before, and many couples like to have something a little different, with the addition of coloured gemstones, antique styling or an unusual setting. Throughout all this the round brilliant cut solitaire has maintained its popularity; its simplicity means it is perfect for everyday wear and never goes out of fashion, exemplifying the idea that a diamond is forever. If you are planning your own proposal then why not come and chat to one of our experienced gemmologists and jewellers? We are always happy to answer your questions and help you navigate the huge range of options available, assisting you to find the perfect ring to propose with. BRADFIELD PARISH COUNCIL’S ANNUAL REPORT 2017-2018 IN ASSOCIATION WITH SIXER
Cllr. Victoria Talbot (left) is the outgoing chairman of Bradfield Parish Council. She will be replaced by Cllr. Trevor Bagshaw (right)
REPORT BY THE CHAIRMAN Outgoing Chairman Councillor Victoria Talbot. irstly, I would like to thank my fellow councillors for their support whilst I have been Chair. It has been a rewarding year spent representing the Parish Council and residents, and I would like to wish Cllr. Trevor Bagshaw all the best for the year ahead. Thanks must also be extended to our groundsmen, who have been busy keeping our Parish looking in pristine condition over the last 12 months. They have spent time maintaining buildings, equipment and machinery – whilst making sure everything is in good and safe working condition – and without this level of detail, the Parish would fall into disrepair. Spring bulbs have recently been planted in Coronation Park, and in conjunction with the City Council, local MPs and residents groups, the team have planted three planters at Bridge Hill, where it was, for those of you who know the area, a particular hot spot for accidents due to poor visibility. When I look back at this year, it has been a busy and successful one; Cllr. Habeshaw (Chair of Land and Premises) has supported the extensive research into how we can improve the paths in Coronation Park and Cllr. Greaves – having been instrumental in this research – has been looking into different materials, to ensure the best value for money. We will update you when work commences. Further to this, additional play equipment has been sited in Dungworth, and the Christmas card competition was once again a huge success. Cllr. Southwood (Chair of Finance and Staffing) has helped the
F
Council maintain its service to the community, within the budget set for the year. Our annual accounts are subject to a full internal audit, carried out by an independent auditor, before being submitted for external audit. Working partnerships with Action for Stannington, Steel Valley Project and Oughtibridge Gala Events and Donations Charity have sustained, and the Council continues to contribute to the Sheffield Lakeland Landscape Partnership Project. Throughout the year, the Council has offered each school within the Parish an amount of up to £1,000 to carry out a project, which when complete, we hope to report on in future newsletters. Cllr. Bennett (Chair of Planning) has helped guide councillors in reviewing each individual application, by inviting members of the Planning Committee to comment during meetings. This dialogue continues until the committee agrees the consensus of opinion, and the appropriate observations and comments are made against each application. These observations are based upon such information as community concerns, planning and environmental issues, and other matters which have a bearing on the comments made. The members of the Planning Committee are also pro-active in helping and advising Parishioners on planning applications and concerns, and members of the local community are welcome to attend meetings to discuss planning applications. Finally, this just leaves me to say congratulations to everyone involved on another successful year.

FINANCIAL REPORT 2017/2018 successful grant applications for 2017/2018 is below. The precept collected from the local taxpayers amounted to £238,109. The balance was met from reserves, income from Birtin Cemetery, rental income, the sale of an asset and other miscellaneous income. The Council’s accounts are subject to external audit. The external audit will be undertaken in July 2018 and the accounts will be made available to the public during July 2018. The final audit report will be displayed after completion of the external audit. For the current year 2018/19 budgeted expenditure amounts to £273,890 with a precept of £241,870.
he Parish Council approved expenditure for the financial year 2017/18 of £257,422. The Council’s expenditure relates to services carried out in the area, enhancing the work of Sheffield City Council and local community groups, maintenance of assets – which includes Council offices, Coronation Park, Birtin Cemetery, Low Bradfield public toilets, several stone-built bus shelters, vehicles, equipment and numerous wayside seats and noticeboards – and provision of the illuminated Christmas trees throughout the Parish. An amount is also set aside each year for grants to local Planters in Coronation Park organisations. The full list of

Pantone colours
Make it GREAT outdoors
Those trend-setters at Pantone have created a cool and calming colour palette perfect for gardens. The 'verdure' palette features colours naturally found in vegetation and woodland. This means berry-infused purples, wood reds, eggshell blues and foliage greens are sure to look great in any garden. Couple coloured clay pots with flowering herbs such as lavender, rosemary and Thai basil or paint your fences and furniture in these key colours.
PHOEBE SEYMOUR’S GOT SOME HINTS AND TIPS FOR MAKING THE MOST OF YOUR GARDEN THIS SUMMER. espite the unpredictable British weather, the UK is embracing an outdoor lifestyle like never before, with sales of garden furniture, barbecues and garden accessories expected to grow by three to four per cent annually right up to 2021. And with summer finally in full swing, it’s time to dress our gardens with all the latest on-trend accessories and plants to impress our family and friends in time for the garden party season. Here are 10 of the biggest garden trends sweeping the nation in 2018.
D
Grow your own veg With the emphasis on more ecologically and naturally grown produce in recent years, we have seen a huge increase in people growing their own vegetables. Whether you have a big garden or a small balcony, you’re sure to find seeds and grow bags to fit your outdoor space. Carrots, green beans, tomatoes, cucumbers and lettuces are said to be the easiest vegetables to grow in the UK climate, and with plenty of books and YouTube tutorials on the web, even those without green thumbs are sure to succeed.
Pizza ovens
Japanese gardens The Japanese art of wabi-sabi is an acceptance of the natural cycle of growth, decay, and death. Wabi-sabi is nothing new to the Japanese, who have practiced this art since the 15th century. However, it is becoming an increasingly appealing trend to busy westerners, who have little time to perfect their gardens. This trend is all about balancing nature and nurture and celebrating the beauty of imperfections such as overgrown perennials, moss-covered stones and weathered pots. 36 Sixer | www.sixermagazine.co.uk
@SixerRMC
Move over barbeques – outdoor pizza ovens are the latest outdoor culinary trend sweeping the nation. There are now a wide range of wood-fired ovens on the market, from stand-alone smaller models, to bigger brick-built ovens to suit your garden. So embrace al fresco dining and invite your loved-ones over for a pizza party this summer.
FEATURE
OUTDOOR STRUCTURES With al fresco dining being popular and the British climate being unpredictable, outdoor structures are a must for 2018 – but not just any awning. Pergolas with integrated drainage, lighting and heating will be the must-have garden feature, while outdoor kitchens will also continue to grow in popularity, with dedicated spaces for cooking, eating and entertaining becoming a central focus.
Copper accents If metallics are more your style, copper is back in a big way this year. Real and rusty copper accessories that were once shunned to the back of the shed can now be brought to the forefront. But if you’d rather introduce sparkling new items, copper-coloured lanterns and copper-effect stainless steel structures will bring your garden right up to date.
SOLAR LIGHTS To keep your garden parties going long into the evening, you’ll need some good lighting. Solar lights mean your lamps and fairy lights are charged and ready to go with no need for plug sockets and batteries. From stylish ornamental lamps, to more practical lanterns, there’s now a huge range of lighting options to choose from.
Exotic shrubs
PRACTICAL SHEDS Sheds have become so much more than just a place to store your lawn mower. They have become rooms for our hobbies and businesses to flourish. Some use garden rooms as yoga studios, while others just need a ‘man shed’ to relax in and while away a couple of hours. What’s more, there are plenty of compact multipurpose sheds with clever storage solutions to make full use of what little space you have.
As well as native plants in Pantone colours, exotic plants in bright shades are also taking centre stage. Euonymus oxyphyllus, an elegant, slow-growing shrub from Korea is becoming increasingly popular thanks to its rich, emerald green leaves which turn to shades of yellow, bronze and red in the autumn, and produce a spectacular show of colour in the summer from its cherry-like fruits.
Limestone After featuring in James Basson’s awardwinning garden at the RHS Chatsworth Flower Show last year, limestone is making a comeback. But rather than the bright white variety, we will be seeing a range of harder-wearing stones in mid-tones to bring out the warmer tones in our gardens. Expect to see a mix of different coloured pebbles in complementary shades @SixerRMC

If you’re heading to the main arena at Hillsborough Park, Into the Trees is the dedicated family area. Responsible Fishing will be taking the reins on Saturday and Sunday’s activities by bringing their woodland workshop that runs throughout the weekend allowing for a little peace and tranquillity – whether it’s rock balancing or foraging for materials to create woodland crafts. Jamboree Arts will be hosting a circus school both Saturday and Sunday, where kids can walk the tightrope or try their hand at juggling and acrobatics in the big top. Furthermore, the pop-up cinema brought to you by Village Screen, will be running across the weekend, if you’re in the mood to kick back with a movie. To find out more about the main arena, visit www.tramlines.org.uk.
STOP PRESS!
THE FRINGE The Folk Forest This year The Folk Forest based at Endcliffe Park are providing two new stages – one for parents with kids up to three-year-olds, and another focussed on young people. There will also be a kid’s area, forest school, new games workshops and all the usual fun in Endcliffe Park. The marquee stage for zero to three-year-olds and their grown-ups, gives audiences the opportunity to hear live classical, folk and jazz music in a baby and toddler friendly environment, alongside sensory activities, including bubbles, colourful ribbons, and littlehands percussion. Don’t worry if your little one (or you) needs to sleep, cry or be fed. With a main stage, eight concerts and four participatory workshops every hour on Saturday and Sunday, there’s something for everyone. To find out more, visit www.thefolkforest.net.
City centre Sheffield will play host to music, entertainment and food and drink on 21 and 22 July, as The Fringe at Tramlines brings that festival feeling to the city centre. The Fringe at Tramlines will see key areas of the city centre turned into entertainment zones for the weekend, whilst buskers, street performers and circus acts will roam the streets. Devonshire Green will be transformed into a family-friendly World Music Stage, curated by Alan Deadman and Young Music, Barkers Pool will be turned into a food, drink, craft and entertainment area with Yellow Bus Events, while the Peace Gardens will become a place to chill out in front of a big screen showing musical films and footage from previous Tramlines line-ups. To find out more visit www.sheffafter5.com/thefringeattramlines. @SixerRMC
The winners of Tramlines Festival’s ‘Apply to Play’ scheme have now been announced to play at the celebratory ten-year event from 20-22 July at Hillsborough Park. Handpicked from thousands of applicants by festival organisers and representatives from The Leadmill, the additions include Imi, Kadija Kamara, Little Grace, Polo, Saint Petersburg, The Golden Age of TV and Universal Tree. Supporting local and emerging talent has always been key to the Tramlines Festival ethos. This year’s line-up already features Sheffield’s finest, including Reverend and The Makers, Milburn, High Hazels, Bang Bang Romeo and comedic songwriter, John Shuttleworth. Universal Tree are fronted by Steve Edwards, the former frontman of Lords of the Flatbush – a collaboration with former Arctic Monkey, Andy Nicholson, and Louis Carnall of Milburn. Universal Tree draw influences from psychedelia, soul, funk and blaxploitation films and are playing the main stage on Sunday. Saint Petersburg (previously The Ratells) have some serious momentum and their first show sold out over 1,000 tickets in just four minutes. Check them out on Friday to see what the fuss is about.

Here’s to beer garden heaven! THE SUN’S OUT AND THERE’S NO BETTER PLACE TO BE THAN THE PLOUGH. here are few places more beautiful to be on a summer’s day than The Plough in Bradfield. Tucked in the luscious green hills with stunning views of the countryside at every angle, their beer garden is an ideal place to sit and enjoy a refreshing pint – or any other tipple of your choice for that matter. The pub is a stone’s throw from Dam Flask and the Bradfield Cricket Club, meaning it’s very popular with everyone, from walkers and cyclists, to the local bowls team and farmers. From pulling into the carpark, you can tell The Plough is a family pub. You’ll often see Ben Green’s own children, Bobby, John and Finlay playing in the child-friendly beer garden, which is home to a lovely lawn with, a no smoking area and an area where adults can go to smoke, ensuring everyone is catered for. Beer wise, they are proud to sell all the Bradfield beers and keep a couple of guest ales as well. Otherwise, you’ll find a choice of lagers and ciders, wines, spirits and soft drinks to suit everyone. The Plough has been under the care of Ben for four years now, and is primarily a country pub that serves typical, fresh, British pub food, offering menus to suit all pockets and all tastes. Meal prices start from £3 and go up to £12, with an average meal costing just £6.95 each. The Plough’s Sunday carvery is a family meal not to be missed, with a choice of meats, a range of vegetables, roast potatoes and all the trimmings.
T
50 Sixer | www.sixermagazine.co.uk
And if you have a special occasion coming up, The Plough also has a function room, which can cater for birthdays, family gettogethers and even weddings. Family-run, Ben is at the forefront and is the brains of the business, along with his partner of 16 years, Jo. Then there’s his brother John, who has been in partnership with Ben for the past 15 years. Although they run separate pubs in the area (John is in charge of The Old Horns just up the hill), running them both is a team effort. Ben and John have had many pubs over the years, but Ben and his family feel they have found a perfect home at The Plough. When asked what makes the pub so popular with his customers, Ben said:
@SixerRMC
“Simple! We have a great team, who get along well with our great customers. Add to this our fantastic and affordable food and drinks, and it’s no wonder we have so many regulars coming back time and time again.” The Plough New Road, Sheffield, S6 6HW Tel: 0114 285 1280 Facebook: @plough.lowbradfield

ACHIEVE YOUR GOALS I CHANGED MY WHOLE LIFE WITH THE HELP OF G&M HEALTHCARE, SAYS KERRY HARRIS WHO SHED AN AMAZING SEVEN STONE WITH THEIR HELP. “If you had told me at the beginning of the year that 2016 would be the year I lost weight, I wouldn't have believed you.” Kerry Harris had struggled with body and self-confidence issues for many years, often yo-yo dieting and attempting to lose weight but always going back to old habits. But when the strains of carrying the extra weight began to affect her family life, it became impossible to ignore. “Before I started Alevere, I hated my body. My weight was beginning to affect my confidence and was making me feel very unhappy in all aspects of my life. I stopped doing activities I loved, spending time with my children and avoided situations where I felt my weight would be judged.” Stepping on the scales left Kerry feeling low, but it also gave her the determination she needed to tackle her weight problem head on. “I hadn’t weighed myself for years. I imagined I would weigh about 13-14 stone, so when the scales told me I was 17st 6.5lbs I couldn’t believe it. “I had seen advertisements for G&M Healthcare with Alevere and decided I was going to give it a try. I was so sceptical to begin with, since I had always been trying to lose weight - I remembered how exhausting it was trying to find the perfect diet plan or weight loss ‘trick’.” Combining high quality, flavoursome foods and state of the art ultrasound technology, it was the maintenance stage of the Alevere programme that Kerry found most difficult. But, under strict medial supervision, she soon realised how important it was to enabling her to manage her weight long term. “The fast rate of weight loss kept me motivated and the therapy sessions gave me the support I needed to stay on track and help me understand more about my relationship with food.” So far, Kerry has lost over seven stone and uses her own weight loss as a tool to spur herself on. “As the weight came off, I could not believe how good I felt and how different I looked. I lost almost seven stone in 21 weeks and I feel amazing. “Seeing the weight come off gave me encouragement to keep going and I now feel that I know how to eat properly. The
Kerry before…
…and after
plan has taught me to think about what I am putting into my body.” Like everyone, Kerry has hit the occasional rut but she says she tries to combat it by switching up her workout routine. "My weight is no longer ruling my life. Before, I let the weight define me and my boundaries. Now, I don't. I make the rules. "I've learned to be patient about the rest of the weight loss," and she reminds others to do the same. "Instead of always being down on yourself for how much more you have to go, look back at all you've already done." Kerry is such a convert to the goals and outcomes of the programme that she has now joined G & M Healthcare as a weight loss therapist, helping to motivate others along their weight loss journeys. “All the staff at the clinic were very caring and professional and I wanted to give something back to the programme. It has really helped me and I’m so grateful. “It’s great to see others achieving their goals.” @SixerRMC

remedial massage therapies. Focus is placed on confidence, in the way you move and creating faith in your abilities, offering time not to think and to explore the boundless potential of who you are, and as the studio holds up to 12 people in a personalised setting, instructors can give maximum attention to attendees – helping you get rid of aches and pains, and to de-stress, relax and find time for yourself. “Our bodies like to move,” says Katie. “And they are healthiest when they move lots, in lots of different ways, lots of times. “This doesn’t mean in an exhausting way, but enough to make sure all the soft tissue (ligaments, tendons, muscles, fascia) are ready to move at a moment’s notice, however you want to go, without pain or restriction. “Our studio is for people who want to spend time in a friendly place, whilst learning @SixerRMC

They’re joined by plumbing apprentice Luke, knowledgeable joiner and kitchen fitter Pete, plasterers Daz and Ash, top-end decorators Paul and Graham and many more tradesmen besides. “We are lucky to have such a good, wellmannered team,” concludes Dean. “Our dedicated office staff care for and know most of our customers by name. Some like to call into the shop for a chat and some free advice. “We give fixed price quotes, which means you really know the exact price you will pay. Rivelin races ahead BY DEPUTY HEADTEACHER SHEENAGH MIDDLETON.
ports week is an important date in the annual calendar at Rivelin Primary School. More than 400 children take part in multi-activity days over the course of a week. The school sees sport and health and wellbeing as a priority and by running this focused week helps to raise awareness, enrich and extend opportunities. The week always commences with an assembly delivered by a sporting guest. This year the children were inspired by Ash Randall, a Guinness World Record Holder for freestyle football. He wowed the children with his skills and he promoted the themes for the week; dedication, motivation, ambition, challenge and growth mindset. During the week the children were challenged to display these themes through many sporting sessions, including gymnastics, martial arts, paralympics and yoga to name just a few. The element of mixing activeness and fun is also key, so inflatable games are hired for two days. Every class is timetabled to enjoy a session with their friends. This year the children climbed the giant helter skelter, scaled the adrenaline assault course, mastered the 3-in-1 game stall and even scored a hole in one on the crazy golf course. The KS2 Sports Day is a firm favourite, held at the English Institute of Sport. The children have the opportunity to race and use the facilities that athletes like Jessica Ennis have trained with; this is not only motivational but mementos. In addition to this, the Year 6 children organise and lead the KS1 Sports Day held on the school’s own field. The school strongly believes that events like these showcase the leadership skills and abilities of what Rivelin children are all about. To draw the week to a close, a celebration assembly is held where experiences are shared and successes from the week are celebrated. The drive to ensure all children have access to a healthy active lifestyle is and will continue to be a major focus for Rivelin Primary School.

of fantastic sandy beaches, traditional towns, hillsides and parks to explore. Is it any wonder that it has become a firm favourite with so many British holiday-makers? Visitors can wander through Palma’s gothic quarter and wonder at its cathedral. Laze on golden sandy beaches or delight in the Tramuntana Mountains. Luxuriate in charming manor houses or relax in a sophisticated boutique hotel. For romance or fun, action-packed or lazy days, there’s something to suit everyone in Mallorca. The Balearic Islands comprise of Mallorca, Menorca, Ibiza and Formentera, with Mallorca the largest, the most popular, and the best known of these delightful islands. Mallorca is often likened to a continent rather than simply an island due to its variety in culture, history and natural landscapes and it is not surprising that the sheer beauty of the island captivates everyone who visits it. No other European island boasts more contrasting terrain, from the fertile plains of the centre to the almost alpine peaks of the Tramuntana Mountains in the northwest and across to the gentle hills of the Levante to the east. The island’s 500km of coastline offers a @SixerRMC
succession of lovely coves, beautiful sandy beaches and secluded bays with some extraordinary caves to explore: notably the Caves del Drac near Porto Cristo. And together with a mild climate and a rich cultural history, it really does provide a delightful holiday destination. The highest peak in visitors is within the summer months, but there is in fact plenty to see and do all year round. Although if you are looking for a beach holiday, May to October will be the best time to visit. Temperatures during the winter months are usually quite mild and remain in double figures. For those who are looking to explore Mallorca’s cultural and historic sights, the winter season is perfect as there are fewer tourists. The city of Palma is a popular choice for city and short breaks with such a great choice of shops, restaurants, museums and galleries. Mallorca has something to suit all tastes: from designer shopping in Palma to haggling for leather souvenirs at the Inca market, from water parks to theme parks, from sailing trips to cruises and exclusive restaurants to tapas bars and evening entertainment shows.

THINGS TO DO: Amaze’n Laberintos
Palma de Mallorca International Boat Show
The maze at Playa de Muro is one of the largest in Europe, stretching for nearly 1.4km on the beach beneath the pines. It’s a great idea for family things to do in Mallorca with its water dragons, monsters, witches, clowns and magicians lurking around hidden corners. There are baffling puzzles and riddles to help or hinder your progress. Open daily.
A floating exhibition displaying more than 300 boats ranging from 6m to 35m in length, the International Boat Show is hosted in the Moll Vell port area of Palma during the last few days of April and first few of days of May. The show focuses on recreational sailing and the best of sailing as a sport. Inca Market
A fascinating network of caverns, the Arta Caves, on Mallorca’s east coast at Cap Vermell, are nearly 50 metres above the sea. The cave chambers rejoice in names such as Hell, Purgatory and Paradise. The 22m tall stalagmite known as Queen of the Pillars is the highlight. Open daily it is a great attraction to visit when looking for things to do in Majorca.
Held on a Thursday, Inca’s weekly market is one of the best ways to get a feel for the real Mallorca. Although holidaymakers do visit in large numbers, the vast majority of customers are Mallorcans keen to track down a bargain as almost everything is sold there. The leatherwork is particularly good and high quality handbags, sandals and baskets are available. It is a great place for shopping and gifts.
Palma Aquarium
Old Town Alcudia
Exhibiting an exceptional variety of flora and fauna of the Mediterranean Sea, Palma Aquarium boasts a very large array of species, including fish from the Australian coral reef and sharks amongst the 55 different aquariums. The aquarium is another great attraction for adults and children alike when looking for alternative things to do in Mallorca, away from the beach. The aquarium is open daily.
Located in the north-eastern area of Mallorca is Alcudia’s old town. The town is surrounded by a moat and walls which were built over the 13th and 14th centuries by order of King Jaume II in order to protect its inhabitants. Now, the walls are an artistic historical site and are protected from further damage since part of the wall collapsed. Although the town has limited shops, there are cafés and restaurants serving traditional tapas and wine.
Arta Caves
There are also historical aspects about the town that are ready to be explored such as the roman theatre. A market runs on Tuesdays and Sundays 8.30am-1.30pm. Catamaran
Exploring Mallorca on land is fantastic, however, if you fancy something a bit different, why not explore the surrounding seas with a catamaran day trip, a great way to view Mallorca from another perspective. Offering a memorable experience with food, music and beverages, the charges are approximately 50 euros per person and 25 euros per child. Private hire is also available with prices varying between the different seasons. Cycle routes
The island has some spectacular cycle routes to please all sorts of abilities. Dramatically stunning views over cliff tops accompany your ride as you make your way to the most north easterly point of the island, Cap de Formentor. At the tip is the Formentor lighthouse, when you can take some refreshment and gaze over the stunning views which make the task of cycling up those winding roads well worth it.

Glyn Rhodes Glyn ‘Showboat’ Rhodes retired in 1993 and immediately went on to earn his trainer license in 1994, followed swiftly by his manager license and eventually his promoter license. After teaching the sport for a couple of months, Glyn knew this was what he wanted to do full-time and, with that, he opening Sheffield Boxing Centre on Burton Street, Hillsborough. Having been included in the 2013 New Year’s Honours list, Glyn Rhodes was awarded an MBE for his services to boxing and a variety of charities, reinforcing and legitimising all the effort that he has put into boxing during his 41-year involvement in the sport. “The gym is not just about me, there are a lot of other people who are the backbone of it and this is only the beginning – we have a plan. We want to raise as much as we can to give more kids a chance to fight in competitions nationwide and hope we will have a full team of young fighters ready to box around the globe. “Without your support, we would not be able to make a difference and your donations – at every level – really are helping these kids turn their lives around. Thank you, from the bottom of my heart.”
The Stephen Harrison Snooker Academy
UNDER THE STARS
Ray Harrison, 1985 Paraplegic World Snooker Champion, was the inspiration behind a nonprofit Sheffield enterprise, set up by his son, Stephen Harrison following his death. Stephen set up The Stephen Harrison Snooker Academy (SHSA) in 2007, to provide snooker coaching and competitions for a wide variety of disadvantaged groups. “We want to encourage more young people – boys and girls – to get involved, and in the long-term, I’d love to see the SHSA expand worldwide and snooker be reintroduced into the Paralympics, where it hasn’t been played since 1988.” If you’re interested in joining the club or want to help raise funds, contact Stephen Harrison at stephen@snookerskills.com or call 07864 046826.
Under the Stars, a notfor-profit arts organisation based in Hillsborough, was set up in 2007, because adults with learning difficulties weren’t being offered a place where they could socialise as adults. “They were being offered pop to drink and songs like Agadoo to dance to,” says music tutor, Liz Nicholas. “So the founders decided to set up a place where adults with learning difficulties could go along with their friends and support workers and listen to music they enjoy, have a proper drink and let their hair down.” Now in its 11th year, the team have been busy spreading the word about the wonderful work they do, which includes club nights and weekly music workshops. HEROES
Nathan Hill When Nathan was 13 months old, he contracted a viral brain infection, which left him with learning difficulties and problems with both his sight and hearing. He was also diagnosed with epilepsy, and, like countless others in a similar position, the opportunities to better himself seemed to dry up as soon as he left formal education. Despite this, Nathan has always been determined to live an independent life, and after leaving formal education with no work experience at the age of 16, he enrolled at Henshaws College in Harrogate, a charity supporting people living with sight loss and a range of other disabilities. Nathan’s Craft’s and Tea Room opened on Stannington Road shortly after Nathan left college in September 2014, with all the work being carried out by Nathans dad, Craig, and has since allowed him to develop his skills even further, and to share them with the local community. With the help of carer Sam Webster – a baker in her own right, Nathan makes lunches, cakes, brilliant lemon meringues, and delicious rocky roads, and, in addition to working in the kitchen, he also takes on front of house roles, such as acquiring orders and payments, socialising with regulars and breaking down societal barriers.
Support Dogs and Nick White Dog-lover Nick White, aged 43, from High Storrs, had hoped to raise £500 for charity Support Dogs, but by the end of his One Year No Beer challenge, had smashed his target. Nick, a bat ecologist, raises money for a charity every couple of years, and this time wanted to do something a bit different. He was inspired to raise money for Support Dogs after hearing one of their disability assistance dog clients speak about her experiences and the difference her dog made to her life. “I have a black Labrador, Sam, and love him to bits. In his own way he supported me when I was going through a mild depression, and just having him around and having to walk him, a dog really lifts your mood I think. Dogs are so loving, and don’t ask for anything back. “I heard Support Dogs’ client Amanda Davidson speak, met and chatted to her and she was inspirational. Then I found out about Support Dogs being based in Sheffield but helping people all around the country. Finding out how these animals can be trained and use their skills was fantastic.” To find out more and to donate to Support Dogs, visit www.supportdogs.org.uk
Jake and Pierre
Sheffcare and Aqeel
Jake Johnson and friend Pierre will be setting off from Singapore on New Year’s Day 2019, as they cycle roughly 16,500km through South East Asia, over the Tibetan Plateau and amongst the Himalayas, before riding through Pakistan, Iran and finally into Europe. Aside from a desire to satiate their appetites for adventure, Jake and Pierre’s goal is to raise money for Newlife, a charity that provides mobility equipment for children who need it most. Keep up to date with Jake and Pierre’s journey via Instagram, Facebook and the Half the World Away blog www.halftheworldaway356425755.wordpre ss.com and if you would like to donate or help in any way, visit www.gofundme.com/cycling-eurasia-forcharity for equipment donations and www.justgiving.com/fundraising/cyclingeurasia-for-charity for charity donations.
Currently, there are over 400 older people living in Sheffcare homes across Sheffield, and in November 2016, volunteer coordinator, Kathryn Rawling was appointed to help provide a wider range of opportunities and support for the residents of the ten care homes across the city. One of the first volunteers to join Sheffcare was Aqeel Hussain, a 17-year-old student currently studying for his A-levels at Tapton School. “I was thrilled when Aqeel committed to volunteering for six months. He gives up two hours of his time each Saturday and visits Midhurst Residential Home in S6. “It’s lovely to see a young person giving his time in this way. Sheffcare greatly value our volunteers and would like to thank Aqeel, and all of our volunteers, for the time they give.”
Janet Blackburn Janet Blackburn of Hillsborough was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2010 and just two weeks later her husband, Robin, was diagnosed with cancer of the oesophagus. Following the diagnosis, Janet responded well to treatment, but sadly, her husband lost his fight with cancer in 2011. Janet has gone on to raise £27,335.14 for Weston Park Cancer Charity through various fundraising initiatives. “The staff at Weston Park Hospital, and in particular at the Cancer Clinical Trials Centre saved my life, and reinforced what I already knew – cancer research is the only way forward. “Like any other disease, cancer makes you feel powerless and angry, and though I’m not a doctor, a nurse, a researcher or anyone capable of helping people with cancer first hand, I can raise funds. “Every penny I raise for the cancer charity is a huge thank you from me, and I hope that one day I can raise enough to give more cancer patients access to pivotal treatment options.” If you would like to make a donation or assist Janet in her fundraising, call 07748 372591. You know, maybe kick back and relax in their cottage in the grounds of Kensington Palace. So you could say it was a huge surprise when I ‘bumped’ into them on a recent trip to London. Of course, when I say bumped, I don’t mean brushing shoulders with them on Kensington High Street, more that they’re the centre of attention as you’d expect. Cameras are flashing left, right and centre as people clamour to get their picture taken with the happy couple. And they don’t complain once. My son –he’s five – on the other hand, was less than impressed, preferring the Marvel figures and 4D cinema experience. My wife was happy to have her picture taken with a Wookiee in the Star Wars section while I gave Bobby Moore a hand lifting the Jules Rimet trophy. With other areas covering film, music, culture and sport, as well as a Spirit of London ride in a London taxi, it was a fun way to spend 2-3 hours. And where else would you bump into Harry and Meghan? a regular basis, usually for work, and it’s easy to forget what a fantastic place it really is. Suitable for kids? Most definitely. The base for our stay was the charming Jumeirah Lowndes Hotel, which was tucked away in the chic little enclave of Belgravia. It was a great spot – close to Knightsbridge tube station and the upmarket shopping of Harrods and Harvey Nichols as well as being a short walk to Hyde Park. The hotel is the smallest in the Jumeirah portfolio with just 88 rooms. What I really liked about it was that you get the quality service of a big hotel chain yet it retained a boutique feel. All the staff were really friendly and welcoming, nothing was too much trouble. Our junior suite accommodated the four of us comfortably and had all the little comforts that make a big difference – bath robes and slippers for all of us, Temple Spa products in the bathrooms, Nespresso coffee machine and complimentary wifi. The icing on the cake? Complimentary teddy bears for the kids. Like I said, it’s the little things. Guests can also use the Peak Health Club & Spa at sister property Jumeirah Carlton Tower, which is just around the corner, and there are complimentary bikes to hire, should you wish to explore on two wheels. just what you needed for a day of exploring ahead. Next on our list of things to do, and a charming 15-20 minute walk along The Serpentine in Hyde Park, was the Natural History and Science museums. My son is a huge dinosaur fan and was blown away by the display at the former while my daughter loved learning about the human body in the latter. Given that there’s so much to see and do – a day wasn’t enough for us – it’s amazing that both of these attractions are free to visit. For our sightseeing day, we made good use of the Tube and buses – kids under 11 travel for free with a paying adult – which saw us take in the Tower of London and Tower Bridge, Buckingham Palace, the Houses of Parliament, Downing Street and Trafalgar Square. A torrential downpour and thunderstorm curtailed our plans somewhat so we ducked into the shops of Regent Street, Carnaby Street and Oxford Street before heading back to the hotel for some much needed rest and recuperation. The Jumeirah Lowndes Hotel was the perfect respite. Overall we had an amazing four days; the weather was glorious in the most part and even the trains ran on time. My children are already planning what we’ll do on our next visit.

Mike takes the mike!
All things to all men MIKE MARSH – A SPECIAL TRIBUTE. BY MARTIN EDWARDS. ome people make their mark in life by pursuing wealth and fame. Some accomplish great feats and win public acclaim. Mike Marsh made his own impression by just being Mike. It was with sadness that we learned of his passing at the age of 70 earlier this year. To all of us at RMC Media, Mike
S
was a friend, and more. Together we forged a bond that goes back 32 years to a time when our sister magazine Westside and his business PA Jewellery became almost synonymous. Already by then a successful businessman, he went on to take the company to new heights and national recognition. He also built a substantial property business in his spare time. So much for the biographical detail. But there was more to the man than that. There was the Mike who was held in a special esteem by his staff, to whom he was a true father figure. He strove to empower them to be the best they could possibly be. If one of them expressed a desire to go further in their chosen field, the funding to support them in further education magically appeared. Soon the walls at PA Jewellery were covered in diploma certificates. His personal charm and down-to-earth manner also won him friends among his evergrowing army of customers. There was the Mike who loved to laugh. Often the target of practical jokes inflicted by certain Westside sends Mike for a health check at Thornbury Hospital, January 1994 @SixerRMC
individuals at RMC Media, he would take it all in good heart. Witness the occasion when our graphic artists created a plausible-looking parking ticket and stuck it to his windscreen. It was only when he had read beyond the £50 ‘fine’ to learn that he could claim an exemption on the grounds that he resembled the country and western star Kenny Rogers that the penny dropped. He found it hilarious. Nor was he averse to taking part in off-thewall feature ideas for our titles, readily joining in the fun. There was the caring Mike. I recall how he returned triumphant from winning the national Jeweller of the Year award in London, clutching a trophy and a bottle of very rare Champagne he had been presented with at the glittering event. He heard that one of us had been the victim of violent crime while he’d been away. A short time later, the Champagne, together with a get-well card signed by all of his staff, arrived at the home of the injured party. Mike indeed personified the role of being all things to all men. He will be sadly missed by all who knew him. Sixer | www.sixermagazine.co.uk 81

IT’S TIME TO START SPREADING THE WORD ABOUT YOUR NEW FAVOURITE SHOE SHOP – THE SECRET SHOE BOX. ssst… Pssst! Over here… Do you want in on a secret? You do? Right, well there’s a Secret Shoe Box in Sheffield! So secret is this shoe shop that it’s been hiding in plain sight, right under our noses, atop the legendary West Street cobblers, Cobblers and Keys for months now. The shop is, in fact, an extension of the renowned cobblers and sells high-end quality men’s footwear (the women’s range is soon to be expanded). It’s a proper shoe emporium and a definite paradise for any self-respecting coveter of ones and twos. There’s a chilled atmosphere in the intimate shop, which is decked out with a forties aesthetic, complete with an old school shoe

shining chair and a range of over 60 different styles from retail favourites Loakes and Barkers. So, now you’re in the know, but why the sudden urge to let the cat out of the bag? Well, Glen Hardy, a man with over 20 years’ experience selling shoes, is the answer. Glen has taken up a shoe consultancy position in the shop and has decided to put his foot down and bare his sole. “It’s about getting the word out and sharing the secret,” says Glen: “It’s got people talking and that’s what we’re trying to achieve, but we’ve got to make it work by letting people know we’re here. “We want to be a destination where people want to come to. It’s all about awareness and getting the word out there for now.” Glen is a Sheffield resident who worked as the manager of Jones Bootmaker, on Pinstone Street, for over 20 years,
before moving to Meadowhall and selling shoes there. Glen told us: “I worked for Jones Bootmaker for over 20 years so I do know footwear, but I also know the corporate side. The advantage we have is that we can react to a customer within days, and say, right, you want that we can get it for you. If you’re corporate you can only sell what you’ve got. “I was a customer here, and that’s the only reason I’m here. I was selling plastic ladies shoes in Meadowhall and I resigned. Initially I came for the afternoon, Nick (the owner) said come in and look at the ranges. I want to believe in what I’m selling and this is a product I believe in. And Glen is confident that the range in The Secret Shoe Box can’t be beaten. To test Glen’s theory head along to The Secret Shoe Box, on West Street, any day of the week. Glen also encourages people to get in touch via Facebook with requests and he will try to accommodate them. To sweeten the deal they are currently offering a ten per cent discount on shoes, and as a special incentive, if you mention your favourite Sheffield news source (that’s us!) you’ll get a further five per cent, which for the maths whizzes among us means a full 15 per cent off. There’s never been a better time to get that brogue you’ve been after. Secret Shoe Box 145 West Street, Sheffield S1 4EW Tel: 0114 273 7931

sheds and a chicken run but also a community greenhouse where we can sell plants at our annual sales.” “Everything tastes better when it’s home-grown, and yes, you have to put in the time and effort to maintain your allotment, but it’s all worth it in the end – take it from someone who has one.” Morley Street Allotments are part of the Walkley Bank Allotment Society, and with their on-site shop, plant sales and newly-built greenhouse have a strong presence in the community. “What’s really exciting is the council have given us an extra bit of land which we have built the greenhouse on, and we’re planning to further develop this for the community – so we would just like to say thank you to
TIPS TO GET YOU STARTED: • Do things little and often • Dig the ground with a spade to make it level • Make beds • Plant as you go • Try growing soft fruit first • Utilise the community’s knowledge • Don’t be afraid to ask for help • Don’t be afraid to try new things What to grow: • Courgettes • Carrots • Potatoes • Runner beans • Soft fruit • Seasonal flowers Livestock allowed: • Six chickens • Two rabbits
them,” said John. “Our site also has a few community plots, which is fantastic as everyone comes down on a set day and works together on the land.” Sheffield City Council manages over 3,000 allotments over 70 sites, and are looked after by the Sheffield Allotment Federation president Michael Jordan and the committee, who also own allotments within Sheffield. Based at Moss Way Allotment, Michael has been the president for two years representing both private and council owned allotments with aims to help plot holders and potential allotmenteers enjoy and make good use of plots and the produce grown. “We want to work together to make not only Moss Way a thriving community but others within Sheffield, and help fuel environments where people help one another,” said Michael. “At Moss Way, there’s a group of eight of us including Bev and Michael Booth, Doreen Skipper, Stacey Grococ, who’s the groundsman, and his wife Claire who work to maintain the site itself. We mow the grass, trim hedges and work on community projects like the orchard, shop and soon to be functioning compostable toilet.” Michael Booth is also on the federation and with his wife has recently extended his plot size. “The second plot took us nine months to transform but that was with two of us, usually with one @SixerRMC
person it can take between two to three years. The thing to remember is not to give up. Gardening is hardwork and everything is against you but there is nothing finer than getting the first crops of the season,” said Michael Booth. Wife Bev Booth added: “Remember when you have an allotment, you are never wrong in what you do. Some of it is trial and error. All you need to do is keep going and once you have some fruit and veg you’ll be immensely proud of yourself, and will have fallen in love with it.” Waiting times vary when it comes to allotments, and depend on where you are based. If you want an allotment put an application in and you can visit www.sheffield.gov.uk to see a full list of vacancies, prices and concessions along with getting some do’s and don’ts from The Allotment Handbook. John Newman added: “If anyone is wanting an allotment, or is on the waiting list for one then please come down to Morley Street and have a chat with us about what it’s like. “And, if people are interested and there aren’t any plots available then there is the opportunity to share or split a plot with someone – a full plot if a lot of work so if you can share and work together that’s fantastic.” For more information on the federation visit www.sa-federation.co.uk or Morley Street Allotments visit www.sheffieldenvironment.org.To apply for an allotment visit www.sheffieldgov.co.uk. BITS &S PIECE ofo launches rapid response team Ofo, Sheffield’s dockless yellow bike scheme, has launched a 24/7 Rapid Response Team that will work around the clock to stamp out vandalism against its bikes in the city. Since launching in Sheffield in January this year concerns have been raised about high numbers of bikes being targeted by vandals, which, according to ofo, is far above levels in other cities. In response to this ofo’s new Rapid Response Team will patrol streets throughout the day and night to prevent damage being done to the bikes, and will include former members of the armed forces within its ranks. The public are being encouraged to call the team on 0808 1017141 if they see criminals breaking bikes, or report to ofo on Twitter @ofosupport.
Rare find made from historic Steel City cutlery comes to Cupola Artist Russell Frost, based in London, has made a limited edition letter press print from an extraordinary find of a collection of very rare original ‘electroplate’ blocks from now defunct Sheffield cutlery maker, S & J Kitchin. They operated from the Soho Works and ceased production around 1957. Russell has sent a collection of these blocks and the prints to Cupola Gallery. The blocks are not for sale, but are available to be viewed alongside the print, which is for sale in a very limited edition of 20. The knife blocks used to make the print date from 1880 to 1910 and the detail of the engravings is superb. They are very special and the skill of the engravers is second to none. The artist has shown his print at the Hooksmith gallery in London, but felt strongly that he really wanted to see the print exhibited and sold in Sheffield, being the birthplace and home of the blocks and the internationally famous Steel City. In addition, the artist and Cupola would very much like to find out a bit more about the history of these blocks, and if possible, trace anyone connected with someone who made them. The completely wooden blocks are made in end-grain boxwood. From these, a wax cast was made; the insides of which were then brushed with graphite powder, giving it an electric charge to which a copper solution was attracted (copper-faced print blocks were harder wearing). This ‘pie-tin’ of copper was then back-filled with molten lead and your ‘electroplate’ was then ready for commercial printing. The artist is also very curious about a snake design that appears to have been obscured from many of the copper-faced blocks, which may suggest passing of designs to other manufacturers to be made under licence or possibly a business takeover. If anyone has any information or can shed any light about this, get in touch with Cupola Gallery by visiting them at 178-178A Middlewood Road, Sheffield, S6 1TD or call 0114 285 2665. To see more prints, visit www.hooksmith.com. 90 Sixer | www.sixermagazine.co.uk

Walkley café set to sell alcohol Sheffield City Council has received an application from Gerties owner, Julie Varley for ‘Supply of Alcohol, Mon-Sun 08:00-21:30’. The ever-popular South Road café is hoping to capitalise on a spate of new bars opening in the area, including the micropub, Walkley Beer Co and newest addition, The Blind Monkey in the old Firwood Cottage. Gerties currently specialises in loose leaf tea and shuts its doors at 4pm, so the news that it may well be opening later and serving alcohol will come as great news for Walkley residents who like a tipple. Check out Gerties on Facebook page, @gertiescafe.

50 YEARS IN BUSINESS At the Heating Installer Awards 2018 – We won the 2018 Heating Installer of the year for Yorkshire & the North East
Our engineer, Craig, performing a Power Flush at a local property Our working showroom in Hoyland S74 9LH
We are proud to support local causes. This is the Ecclesfield Red Rose JFC team that we sponsor
It was a year that changed history, 1968 was a year of seismic social and political change across the globe. It was also the year that a plumber from Sheffield decided to make a go of it himself. And so Bumford Heating was born. Chris Bumford started the business, from humble beginnings in their spare bedroom in Wincobank. He installed his first boiler that same year, and never looked back. Now run by Chris’ son Neil, the company goes from strength to strength in its fiftieth year.
Amadou, our French apprentice working at a local property
“We are incredibly proud of this milestone” says Neil. “It can be difficult to know which company to trust in your home. I think the reason Bumfords is still here is that we value honesty and integrity, and we get the job done at a fair price. And now with over 50 years of recommendations under our belt, people see us as a trustworthy family firm.” Whether you are looking for a new boiler, heating system upgrade, new controls, plumbing or bathroom work, repairs or servicing - why not contact one of the friendly team at Bumfords.
