SIXERDO YOU REMEMBER? ith summer on the horizon it seems that last month’s Bradfield Cricket Club photograph, supplied by Barry Couldwell, struck a chord with several Sixer readers. Tricia Wragg tells us that her husband Malcolm played man and boy for Bradfield and was also groundsman for many years. Understandably, seeing the team line-up prompted some strong memories, particularly as the photo also included other members of the Wragg family, Bernard and George. Tricia and Malcolm live in Bradfield, Bernard lives nearby and Malcolm’s sister is close at hand too. The photo helped Malcolm identify many players including Tom Huddlestone, Gordon Elliott, Herbert Ibbotson, Jack Bell, Thurrell Dawson and Willis Harper Brian Jones also contacted us to tell us he thinks the photo was taken in the late 1940s and he recognises his father Harris Jones. Thanks again to Barry, who tells us the line-up is as follows. Back row L-R: Alf Constable, Stan Byford, Tom Elliott, Ralph Dawson, Gordon Elliott, Frank Elliott?, Herbert Ibbotson, Bob Dawson. Front L-R. Willis Harper, Thurrell Dawson, Bernard Wragg, Jack Bell, Bernard Ashton. Now we move on to this month’s photo, kindly supplied by Tony Jeffcock. Any ideas?

PROMOTIONMORFITT SMITH
Whether you’re looking to buy, sell or rent, a super service is par for the course from these local property heroes. s it a bird? Is it a plane? No it’s the Morfitt Smith team! If, on Friday 13 May, you see the strange sight of estate agents going about their everyday business dressed as superheroes, fear not. They’re not finally revealing their true identities but rather showing their support for Hallam FM’s Superhero Day in aid of the radio station’s charity Cash for Kids. As headline sponsors of this special day, Morfitt Smith will be raising as much money and awareness as possible for the charity, which helps disabled, disadvantaged and vulnerable children in the local area. “We love getting involved and being a bit silly to support such a worthy cause,” said Morfitt Smith director Paul Batty. “Our costumes are now a daily topic of conversation – sales negotiator Jill Reeves has been planning her outfit since Christmas!” There will be plenty of fun activities taking place on the day, so keep a look out on social media for all the details nearer the time. If you want to get involved with your own Superhero Day, visit www.hallamfm/charity/superheroday for all you need to know. In the run up to the 13th, area manager Kaye Orwin and sales negotiator Anthony Bescoby will also be pitting themselves against each other for the cause. Whoever raises the most money for Cash for Kids will be put forward for a skydive this summer – and they’re both desperate to win. “They’ll be using their own initiative to see how much they can raise and to convince people that they’re worthy of the most donations,” said Paul. “We can’t wait to see what lengths they’ll go to.” While dressing up as superheroes in the name of charity might seem like just a bit of fun – it’s not all based on fiction.

Since opening their first office on Middlewood Road three years ago, they’ve established themselves as superheroes of the Sheffield property scene and have helped homeowners across the city to buy, sell and let their homes. This month sees the first birthday of the Banner Cross branch, and the Crookes office – which opened last September – is already making waves in S10. Alongside their passion and enthusiasm for property, many of the staff also have an impressive amount of experience. Director and valuer John Morfitt has been an estate agent for more than 30 years, and Kaye has been in the industry for over 20 years. “We must be doing something right because the company is growing year on year and you can see our sales and lettings boards popping up all over Sheffield,” said Paul. “We are marketing a great variety of properties – including a host of new builds in Burncross, Stocksbridge and Stannington – and are proud to tailor our packages to suit a range of budgets and requirements.” So while you cheer along the Morfitt Smith superheroes in May, don’t forget that beneath the costume lies a wealth of experience – and a super ability to help you with all of your property needs. SIXERGARDENING
A spring gardening guide
Make the most of your outdoor space throughout the seasons – starting in Spring. By Laura Booth. Spring gardens – where the magic happens Now that the cold winter months are finally behind us, it’s time to embrace the longer days and put our green fingers to good use. Whether you’re a beginner or an advanced gardener, you will know that spring is one of the busiest times and the need to prepare in advance is crucial. Here are some top tips to make sure you are on top of things for the spring months: Get rid of weeds. As the weather becomes warmer, your garden will start to feel alive again. The weeds that you dread to see covering your garden will start appearing, along with ivy and brambles on the base of hedges; get rid of them as soon as possible. Mow your lawn. You have probably been avoiding doing jobs in your garden over the cold winter period. If you haven’t cut your lawn yet, it is best to do so at the start of the spring months. Tie back trees. Trees and climbers that have been damaged from snow or frost can now be pushed back into shape; this will help them grow throughout the forthcoming months.
26 SIXER MAGAZINE
After preparing your garden for springtime, you will be starting to think about making your garden colourful in time for the glorious summer months. What flowers shall I plant in the spring season?
Pansies One of the best flowers to plant in spring. Usually placed in containers. They need to be planted in the sun or a spot partly in the shade in welldrained soil.
Lilacs Come in all shapes and sizes from shrubs to trees. They need full sun and well-drained soil to thrive in spring.
Daffodils They come in a variety of colours: Orange, white, yellow, orange-red and salmon. They also need full sun and well-drained soil to survive. Dahlias Put the plants in pots at the beginning of spring inside, e.g a conservatory. The Dahlias will have grown to six-inch plants by May. Alternatively, if you do not wish to start the plants growing inside, wait approximately three weeks until the weather is warmer and frost is not as likely. Plant them in direct sunlight, deep into the soil so the tubers are sheltered from the cold. Support the stems by tying them to soft twine. Water them regularly in dry weather, and feed regularly over the summer months.

Popular vegetables to grow in your garden Growing your own vegetables can be very beneficial and cost saving. If you’re thinking about growing crops, the middle of April is the best time to ensure your veg are the tastiest they can be. Focus on how much space you have in your garden; this will tell you what you can grow. If space is limited, think about buying ‘dwarf selections’ or ‘patio’ vegetables. Carrots Best grown in the open ground and in hot weather. If the foliage starts wilting, water the carrots every ten days. Make sure you weed before planting; if you let weeds grow, they could overcrowd the carrots. Be careful when weeding that you don’t crush the foliage, the smell can attract carrot fly, which can lay eggs. Putting a barrier over the carrots can prevent this. Leaf lettuce Thin seedlings when leaves start to appear, proceed until the plants are 30cm apart. The plants need watering when the soil is dry in the mornings. Lettuce can attract sparrows, a barrier can prevent this. Onions To grow efficiently, they require a sunny, well-sheltered spot with fertilised soil. Best grown in open ground. Plant each onion 10cm apart. Stop watering and feeding once the onions have grown bigger. Birds can try and lift the skin of the onion at the top, before planting remember to remove the skin. Potatoes After the potatoes have been planted and the stems are 23cm high, it is essential that you start ‘earthing up’, dragging soil up covering the stems to produce a 15cm high range. ‘Earthing up’ is essential; it protects developing potatoes from a substance called light. Light potatoes are green in colour and are poisonous.
Keep it green and lush Every gardener takes pride in their lawn; however it can be hard to keep your grass looking green and healthy all year round. Spring is the best time to tend to your lawn. Here are some essential tips: • Fertilise in early spring to promote root development • Remove small amounts of soil to help your lawn aerate, this allows the water and fertiliser to infiltrate deeper into the soil. • Cutting your lawn to the correct height depends on the time of the year. In spring, use a one-inch cutting height to remove dead grass and allow light to penetrate the roots. In summer the cutting height can be raised to two or more inches. • To ensure your lawn is fresh for all seasons you should soak the grass rather than sprinkle lightly; a main reason for this is so the water gets to the deep roots.
Keep it trim At this busy time of year for gardeners, the final key task is pruning. This involves the cutting away of dead, overcrowded branches or stems of a bush or flower. The following plants need pruning in early spring: Ornamental grasses Tie the tops before cutting, it makes for an easier job. Cut the stems close to the ground. Perennials These can also be cut back anytime in winter. Cut back to four inches to generate stronger new stems. Evergreens Prune the stems with damaged foliage from the winter months. Flowers – Summer flowering trees, shrubs, vines, hydrangeas and roses Eliminate dead and damaged stems. Cut size as required.

Michael and Deborah Cundy from Oughtibridge were delighted when they chose daVally to transform their back garden, front garden and driveway. The couple’s garden is large and was becoming too time-consuming to maintain. Dave met to advise them, step-by-step, taking what they wanted into consideration. Michael and Deborah enjoy entertaining, so decided a large patio area would be ideal. Dave and his team of landscapers got to work in January 2016 and were finished in a matter of weeks. The patio, made from natural Indian stone, has become the focal point of the garden, with a large stairway leading into the garden. There are now a variety of colourful plants and a lawn, as well as a tasteful rockery made from Yorkshire stone and a number of borders. This was complemented with a number of seating points around the garden and a fence for greater privacy. Meanwhile, the front of the property has been carefully transformed into a tidy and manageable area, with a block paved driveway, lush lawn and an area for bedding plants. “Dave and his team embraced the whole project from start to finish and the work was conducted in a very professional manner,” says Deborah. “There were a few challenges along the way, but the back garden now looks amazing and continues to evolve. We are looking forward to enjoying it. Thanks daVally!” working out of a well-equipped yard, and led by head gardener Stuart, daVally’s maintenance rounds cover all of South Yorkshire and North Derbyshire, whilst their landscaping teams cover these and areas further afield such as North Yorkshire and East Midlands. Whether your garden is in need of soft landscaping, hard landscaping, or you need help with full or part maintenance, daVally ensure that every job is fully insured and adheres to health and safety regulations. Due to high demand, it is advisable to book an appointment as early as possible. The lead time is one to three months for small projects and three to four months for major landscaping (estimated times). COMPLETE KITCHEN & BEDROOM SOLUTIONS
Fitted March 2016, Sheffield 6
From a replacement worktop to a whole new kitchen or bedroom, there’s no job too small for CKB. aving traded out of Middlewood Road for over six years now, the Sheffield public are becoming well aware of the high quality, bespoke service on offer at Complete Kitchens and Bedroom Solutions. Owned by Scott Webster, CKB offer a complete kitchen and bedroom service alongside the capability of anything from removing walls to building extensions. Scott said: “When you come to us you really do get everything. Building work, electrics, plastering, decoration, fitting, flooring – this is a one-stop-shop.” But just because Scott and his team can perform complete renovations, that doesn’t mean that they have to. CKB understand that not everybody can afford top to bottom renovations at this moment in time so are more than happy to work on anything from replacing a single kitchen unit upwards. “I can do eight metres of worktop and a new sink and tap for £950 or a whole kitchen or bedroom – so people can have whatever they can budget for,” said Scott. “And if you have your own electrician or plumber that you would like to use then you are more than welcome to do so. We

CKB
will do as little or as much as you wish.” A feature of CKB which sets it apart from many of its competitors is that it manufactures everything on site, giving it a bespoke service. This means it can cater to any needs or desires. Scott employs a close team of dedicated workers including a registered electrician, and plumber, as well as qualified plasterer, brick layers and window fitters, who are all contracted to CKB. Gloss doors particularly in white and cream are in vogue at the current time. This gives a room a fresh appearance and Scott has seen requests for this design boom. Consequently Scott is offering deals on an Astro white and cream gloss – check in at the showroom or give him a call for more deals. Scott doesn’t believe in such gimmicks as offering customers ten per cent off their total bill though. “These are often used to pull the wool over people’s eyes. I offer competitive prices from the word go.” Should you contact CKB, Scott will come out to view your home for a free appointment. The visit normally lasts for an hour depending on job size. “I don’t give
quotes off-the-cuff. I am meticulous when it comes to pricing, so post-appointment I will go through everything and provide an accurate, itemised and fair quote.” Scott is the initial point of contact for customers and he not only designs his work but does the fitting too. Once Scott has committed to a job he dedicates all his time to it from inception to completion. He guarantees that he will not be working on multiple projects at one time and is even willing to turn down work to be able to do this. “My customers like to know that I will always be there and that they have my undivided attention. That is the least they deserve and will get when they come to me.” As such his customers can contact him 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Doors and worktops are guaranteed for a decade but for extra peace of mind Scott ensures that payment comes in instalments and that the full fee is not paid until the job has been completed satisfactorily. For a company that will provide your home with undivided, specialist and bespoke attention, give CKB a call today!

The wisdom of having a pre-paid funeral plan. hat is a funeral pan? Essentially, it’s a means of bringing everyone peace of mind. A funeral plan allows you to protect your friends and family from the emotional and financial burden of arranging a funeral at an already difficult time. With a plan, you make all your own decisions about the day, and pay for the funeral based on today’s prices. You can relax in the knowledge that everything’s been covered, and you and those you love will be protected from rising costs. Sorting out the arrangements in advance means you are guaranteed the funeral you’d like and your loved ones are spared the additional distress of organising it and paying for it. It makes the whole process much easier for the people you leave behind and it puts in black and white exactly what you want to happen, avoiding any misunderstanding or chance of arguing.
W
You need to take advice if… • You or your spouse/partner don’t yet have a Will.
WITH A FUNERAL PLAN, YOU’RE LEAVING A POSITIVE LEGACY l You create a unique day, so you're remembered the way you want to be. l You select the arrangements, so your loved ones don't have to make difficult decisions. l You remove any financial burden by covering the costs of the funeral yourself. l You give your family the chance to add their own personal touches when the time comes. l You protect yourself from rising costs, because a Pre-paid Funeral Plan is set at today’s prices.
• You have a Will but it leaves everything to your spouse/partner.
FIXING YOUR COSTS NOW IS SIMPLY FINANCIAL COMMON SENSE, BUT ARE PRICES TRULY GUARANTEED? On average, unlike our savings, funeral costs have doubled over the last decade. Rising well above the level of inflation, it’s a trend that looks set to continue due to factors including a lack of reasonably priced land for cemeteries, and need for crematoria to invest in their facilities. With (for example) a Co-operative Funeralcare Funeral Plan, it is guaranteed that there will be no more to pay for the services you have included when the time comes, regardless of how much funeral costs increase in the future. In particular, Co-Operative Funeralcare pre-paid plans are not only already exceptionally well priced, but unlike other providers, their plans include all third party costs and disbursements, so there will never be any more to pay...
• You are divorced or widowed.
• You don’t have both kinds of Lasting Powers of Attorney set up. • You or your spouse/partner don’t have a pre-paid Funeral Plan. • You have children. • You are concerned about what will happen and covering the costs if you need long term residential care.

PROMOTIONKALEIDOSCOPE
Teamwork and a passions for hair are the special ingredients that have kept Kaleidoscope at the top of the S6 hairdressing scene for 20 years. ack in May 1996, hair stylist Gina Toulson dreamt of owning a salon. She even had a name picked out – Scope. So when Kaleidoscope on Middlewood Road came up for sale, it felt like fate. Manager and receptionist Reni Thackeray had already been there two years and soon realised that she and Gina worked well together. “Me and Gina gelled instantly,” says Reni. “We’re a great balance because we’re good at motivating and inspiring each other.” Along with an experienced team of stylists full of creative flair, Kaleidoscope had already established itself as one of the most popular salons in the S6 area. Serving the whole family and making every client feel special are the two fundamental values which Gina and the team have continued to uphold over the years and have ensured the salon’s long-term success. Reni was originally a client and was so impressed by the service at Kaleidoscope that she soon joined the team. “I would book in every six weeks because it was the best experience I’d had in a hairdressers,” confirms Reni. “I remember when I had a perm in the 90s - I felt like a film star! And that’s how we want everyone to feel. When our clients sit in that chair, we want to create an experience. Our philosophy is to make every client feel important.” Over the years, the team has enjoyed individual successes, as well as being chosen to style hair for many local fashion shows. They offer familiar services such as cutting, colouring, hair styling for special occasions such as proms, weddings and parties, and a walk-in
B
service for men, but they have also become well-known for their colour correction service. Gina and her team are keen to keep one step ahead of the latest hair trends and are always providing the latest products, such as Fibreplex, which is added to bleach so that as it develops, it keeps the structure of your hair. This means that unlike traditional bleaches which leave hair dry and damaged, your hair will emerge soft and silky. Now to choose a colour, and if you are feeling brave, shades of green and denim blue will be turning heads this year. But if such a dramatic change isn’t for you - don’t worry. Gina and the team are happy to cut and colour to any style. So whether you want to play it safe or try something new, you will always leave feeling comfortable and confident with your hair. This is what keeps Kaleidoscope’s clients coming back time and time again. “We really appreciate our clients’ loyalty over the past 20 years,” says Gina. “One of our clients has been coming to us since she was a little girl and now she brings her son in, which is lovely to see. We are passionate about hair and as long as our clients are loyal to us, we will continue to be there for them.” Kaleidoscope 192 Middlewood Road, S6 1TD Tel: 0114 234 3617
To celebrate 20 years in business and to thank their loyal clients, Kaleidoscope is offering a cut and blow dry for only £20 throughout May. Quote this deal when making an advanced booking.

TOP OF THE CLASS Give your children a head start at some of Sixerland’s best schools.
Corner House Nursery What we like about Corner House Nursery: “From our first visit, Corner House felt like home. It has a really friendly, welcoming feel and the highly trained and qualified staff genuinely love the kids. They serve fresh, home-cooked food and there are great outdoor play areas that provide experiences like riding tricycles, playing on the adventure playground and growing salad and veg. “It’s the little extra touches that make Corner House special like the ‘All About Me’ books – a great record and diary of a child’s time at nursery with lots of photos. Children’s footprints are on the wall and they are given a CD of photos of their time at Corner House when they leave. “The trust I have in Corner House makes it easy to leave my kids in their care with absolute confidence that they will be cared for and have a fab time!” – Simon and Joanna Wright (parents). 130 Wadsley Lane, Hillsborough, Sheffield, S6 4ED Tel: 0114 233 3349 www.cornerhousenursery.org
Coumes Spring Children’s Centre Coumes Spring started out in 1996 and was originally registered for 16 children. The idea of setting up a childcare facility that was more than just a nursery was innovative at the time and the centre was able to care for children aged two to 11 years. Coumes Spring has been a huge success, and today, they can now offer places for 34 children age 0 to 4 years, plus additional out of school places for children up to 11 years. An Open Day and an evening Reunion Party is planned for Saturday 18 June. Owner and Manager, Julia Bryan would especially love to meet up with children, young people, parents and staff who have shared in Coumes Spring’s journey over the years. The open day is open to everyone, but if you would like to attend the evening Reunion please request an invitation from Coumes Spring. Poplar Road, Oughtibridge, Sheffield, S35 0HG Tel: 0114 286 2100

Their OFSTED 2014 report described their pupils as: “interested and enthusiastic” about their learning experience and they are encouraged to be respectful to one another. Situated on the edge of Sheffield in beautiful rural surroundings, the school may be small, but it is able to offer placements from nursery classes, right up to year 6. The school is proud of its welcoming atmosphere and its extensive outdoor learning environment. .
What parents say: “We have been made very welcome when we moved to the school in Y9. My daughter is making fantastic progress.” “I feel that the school is very friendly. Quiet Day at Sacred Heart, Forbes Road, Hillsborough Saturday 9th July 2016 Last September, Sacred Heart Church at Hillsborough held a Quiet Day, offering people the opportunity to reflect on the themes promoted by Pope Francis - the joy of the Gospel, our care for the earth, and the mercy of God. The mercy of God has been the focus of attention in our prayer and action over the last few months, and we intend to hold another Quiet Day on Saturday 9th July, to develop our relationship with God and our neighbour. We will start at 9.30am with registration and coffee in Sacred Heart Hall, in the school playground (access from Ripley Street). Then the first session will take place in church at 10am, with prayer and introduction by Fr Shaun and Deacon Tony. Quiet time will follow for half an hour, and people will choose where to go on the premises, the church, the presbytery, the memorial garden, according to their choice of prayer style and leadership, or quietly wander round Fr Michael will give a talk in the next session in church:, followed by another quiet half hour, and then we will have lunch in the hall – bring your own food but drinks are provided. Finally we will have a celebration of the Eucharist, an encounter with the mercy of God through word and sacrament, finishing at 2pm. Everyone is welcome to come, whether a quiet day is familiar to them or whether it would be a new experience. There's no charge, but we would like people to book so that we know how many to expect, roughly. You can do this by email sacredheart479@btinternet.com or by telephone on 0114 2343580, leaving your name and contact details.

What the customers say: Leanne Taylor, Sheffield “Just had two rooms, a hallway, landing and stairs carpeted by Lee. Really pleased with the good, honest advice and range of quotes Lee provided before we committed. The standard of fitting is excellent and Lee also fixed an additional problem at no extra cost. All in all, a friendly, efficient and value for money experience.” Martin Dale, Sheffield “Really glad I went to L.M. Hill Carpets. Nothing was too much trouble – he answered all my questions and described each carpet in detail. Lee really knows what he’s taking about but after so many years in the job there won’t be much he doesn’t know. The price he quoted was great considering the quality I wanted and the service he offers. I’d recommend him to everyone.” Martin Jones, Rotherham “Just had my carpets fitted by L. M. Hill Carpets. Amazing job from start to finish. Lee was really helpful in his shop and helped me decide the best carpets for the rooms I was having done. He came quickly to measure up and within days he was fitting my carpets. I had five rooms and the stairs. He did a fantastic neat job and took care with every room. Superb value and service, would definitely recommend.”

Star attraction: the sleepy sloth is just one of Costa Rica’s many fascinating animals Photograph: Marco Diaz Segura/www.shutterstock.com
Lizzie Murphy experiences the rich variety of life in the tropical paradise of Costa Rica.
NATURAL WONDERLAND lying through the forest canopy nearly 1500m above the ground, this felt like a challenge that would even make Bear Grylls think twice. Well, almost. The fact that I had been kitted out with a harness, a helmet and was accompanied by a team of safety-conscious guides may detract slightly from the True Survivor element of Costa Rica’s Ecoglide zipwire experience. In fact, it was the perfect introduction for two adrenaline rookies such as myself and my traveling companion, my dear old dad. Costa Rica is a land rich in experiences. A paradise for thrill-seekers and nature-lovers alike, the country attracts over 2.5million tourists annually. Almost half of these visitors are seeking to explore the expansive natural beauty of the country, which is estimated to contain 5 per cent of the world’s biodiversity. As both a biologist and lover of all things Attenborough, I leapt at the opportunity to discover this treasure trove of tropical life. I was certainly not disappointed by the gems we uncovered. Some of Costa Rica’s richest life is found on land, in the rainforests of the northern highlands. A varied selection of mammals live here, from the heavily armoured armadillo to the wide-eyed kinkajou.

The star of the show is without a doubt the sloth, the world’s slowest mammal. Sleeping for between 15-20 hours a day, this animal moves so slowly its fur provides the perfect habitat for moths, beetles and cockroaches. We were lucky enough to spot one of these weird yet wonderful creatures during a night walk in the cloud forest of Monteverde. Hanging from a thin, trailing vine a mere three feet above us, it swung itself delicately upwards in search of some evening grub. It was not just this mysterious mammal that our tour guide, Elbert, was keen for us to witness. Once we were fully equipped, torches in hand, he led

along the seabed. Smaller, and thankfully less vicious, than Hollywood’s infamous Jaws, the white-tipped reef sharks paid us divers little attention. These were silent, graceful creatures, their sleek bodies moving in gentle curls with the current. Our breathing remained steady and slow, respectful of the fact that we were merely visitors to their aquatic kingdom. Eventually our air supplies indicated it was time for us to leave so we headed back to the surface, all limbs intact. A trip to Costa Rica wouldn’t be complete without a visit to one of its prime surf locations and the choice is vast. The northern Pacific coastline is a haven to backpackers and beach bums, all in search of the perfect wave. We chose to spend the final few days of our Central American adventure at Tamarindo Bay, one of the most famous surf resorts in the country. Being a complete novice to the sport, I spent an intense two hours inhaling seawater as I threw myself off the board in a frenzy of flailing limbs. Such an exhausting effort finally paid off and I finally managed to ride a wave, albeit on an over-sized foam beginners’ board. Costa Rica is so much more than a holiday destination; it’s a country of adrenaline and adventure. It’s the perfect place for those who are looking for something with a bit more bite than just sun, sea and sand… perhaps with the help of a shark or two. us through the forest in search of a variety of nocturnal critters. Elbert had his walkietalkie at the ready, communicating with other nearby guides to ensure we saw the finest of what the forest had to offer under the veil of darkness. Elbert pointed through trees and branches to show us a side-striped palm viper, poised and ready for ambush. He shone his light into a small burrow between thick, knotted tree roots to show us a female orange-kneed tarantula. Leaves came alive, suddenly revealing themselves to be expertly camouflaged katydid crickets. He was so enthused to show us the forest at night our pace quickened until we were leaping over dead wood and hurling ourselves over fallen branches in true Indiana Jones-style, desperate not to miss out. Our explorations of Costa Rica’s natural wonders however, were not restricted to land. Never one to pass up the chance to dive beneath the waves, I spent one morning scuba diving off the north Pacific coast, around the Catalina Islands. On the boat ride to the islands a pod of dolphins joined us, breaking the water’s surface with their arching bodies. The diving itself uncovered moray eels with needle teeth, scorpion fish nestled into the sand and a shiny, silver trumpetfish, proudly hovering above the sand. The final dive of the morning was certainly one to be remembered. While moving through narrow channel between two rocks Photographs: Lizzie Murphy we came across three sharks drifting lazily

‘Why your back pain doesn’t improve’. red, a 55 yearold computer worker, presented with low back pain that had given him problems for over 20 years. In the last six months, his pain had become constant and scans had indicated he had a bulging disc and degenerative joint changes in his spine. Medication was not helping and the side effects were making the condition worse. He was unable to go to work and feared he would never be able to play with his grandchildren again. Psychologically, he had low mood and was unable to sleep. This is a common scenario seen in patients at the Hallamshire physiotherapy clinic. The balance between how you are using your spine and, more importantly, what you think is happening in your spine is crucial to helping people. The vicious cycle the pain produces, leading to poor sleep and negative thought processes about the future, exacerbates the pain experience and, naturally, we avoid normal activities and rest for prolonged periods of time.
HEALTH AND FITNESS WITH SUE POWERS

“…I no longer feel that treatment is being ‘done to me’ but I am at the centre of a partnership that is making sense and getting the results I didn’t think were possible.” Fred only improved once he was placed at the centre of the rehabilitation process. It was explained to him that over 70 per cent of people over the age of 50 who have never experienced pain in the back will show bulging discs and degenerative joints on scans – this is a normal finding. Our spine changes as we get older but this is perfectly normal and should not condemn people to a lifetime of pain. With this knowledge, and changing how Fred used his lower back, he started to change. His sleep improved and he slowly started to reduce his painkillers. It was identified that his main problem was sitting for up to eight hours a day and avoiding movement for fear of causing more pain. Improving people’s pain and function is much easier when they are not in fear of movement. The spine is incredibly robust and with a thorough assessment most people can be helped. Fred improved within four weeks and was grateful to the different approach that the Hallamshire Physiotherapy Clinic employs. Rehabilitation has to be driven by research and not outmoded beliefs about our spines.
Sue Powers, owner and founder of Personal Trainers Inc. Ltd, speaks from experience about the benefits of exercise for the older generation. Are you ever too old to exercise? As she approaches her 60th birthday Sue Powers believes that taking regular exercise becomes more important as we get older. Sue says: “You are never too old to exercise but if you have not done anything for a while the first think you need to do is find an experienced professional trainer.” She recommends a consultation with your fitness professional to assess your capabilities and set realistic goals. “Flexibility needs to be your first priority; this allows you to move on to conditioning your body with less risk of injury and also helps you with your activities of daily living.” Where to exercise? Gyms are a good place to start, providing they have the experienced professional trainers on hand to guide you through your exercise routine. Sue also recommends gentle walking, cycling, swimming, etc – basically anything to get your body moving. It’s very important to find an activity that you enjoy and suits your lifestyle as this will encourage and motivate you to continue. As a bonus to becoming healthier and starting new activities, you also have a chance to improve your social life by meeting new friends. Fire Walk fundraiser at Blue Ball A number of friends and regulars of Blue Ball in Worrall recently took part in a fire walk, to raise money for First Class Fundraising, a local charity that provides money for sick and disabled children to holiday with their families. The event raised more than £1,000 towards the upkeep of a caravan at Withernsea. Two hours of intense training took place before the event to psych the 20 fire walkers up. They were not allowed alcohol before the event, but certainly made up for it with some celebratory drinks afterwards. Marie and Shaun at the Ball would like to thank all the sponsors of the brave walkers for their contributions to a memorable event.

Remembrance project raises money for charity After the remarkable success of Bradfield Church’s illumination and Poppy Memorial Trail, organisers celebrated with a prize giving event at The Royal Hotel in Dungworth. The total money raised came to a magnificent £8,000, which was presented to three chosen charities; Help for Heroes, Royal British Legion and St Nicholas church. The Dungworth, Bradfield and District World War One Heritage Group based in north-west Sheffield, put together a number of events sponsored by the Peak District National Park Authority and Bradfield Parish Council to commemorate World War One and to mark Remembrance. Hundreds of people flocked to Bradfield from all over the region to see the illumination of St Nicholas’ Church, where giant floating poppies were projected onto the building for a week in November. Surrounding the church was a Poppy Memorial Trail which was made up of hundreds of red plaques. People of all ages were invited to buy a plaque and write down their memories and personal messages to loved-ones they had lost. “The best and most moving experience was

the positive response from the community,” said team leader and owner of Pinkdotinc Design Sue Hague. “One of the aims of the project was for people to recall their memories and to write them down before they are lost and also, to remember that there are battles in everyone’s lives and not just with the wars happening around the world. “If we can find a solution to the battles within people’s individual lives, we may be able to spread this feeling and plant seeds with projects like these.” A range of fundraising events contributed to the programme, including a sponsored abseil by A2B Expeditions, a Harvest Auction at the Royal Hotel, Dungworth, St Nicholas’ Church Ploughman’s Lunches, and teas from the Dungworth Women’s Institute. Local children from Bradfield Dungworth Primary School and Stocksbridge Junior School were also involved. Help for Heroes regional manager Tony Eaton said: “The money raised allows us to continue to rebuild lives. We are truly grateful and wish the very best for the remainder of the project.” A small percentage of the money will also be put towards the publication of a book showcasing all 1,000 plus red plaque memories bought and engraved during the project. Following the success of the project, the team are currently working to illuminate the church again for one night only in remembrance of the Battle of the Somme.

Wharncliffe Side Primary learn about creepy crawlies The pupils at Wharncliffe Side Primary School get well and truly stuck into their topics, and their recent mini-beasts project is no exception. The young children recently went on a mini-beast hunt around the school grounds learning all about their habitats. Taking this as inspiration, they have been busy making giant models of the creepy crawlies they discovered, which they have hung up around the classroom to bring the outdoors in. As they prepare to look after an army of caterpillars and watch their transformations into butterflies, there is definitely an air of excitement amongst the children. One young pupil concluded the new topic with enthusiasm and knowledge: “My favourite part was making the giant butterfly! And do you know, they spend time wrapped in a cocoon?”
Oughtibridge School enjoys storytelling safari The children at Oughtibridge Primary School recently enjoyed a whole week dedicated to storytelling. Visits from expert storytellers and writers, Conrad Burdekin and Gervase Phinn inspired the children and to set up 28 different areas based on some of their favourite books. Complete with a character from each story, the children went on ‘safari’ with the characters around the school. The children then showcased their own storytelling skills in a special assembly to the school. Pupils from Oughtibridge School have also been getting involved with an animal associated with a different kind of safari. Children recently marked the end of the Art in the Community project, In Our Neck of the Woods, by creating a glitzy diva giraffe called Lady G. She is the head of the herd and presides over the other 14 smaller giraffes, all of which have a permanent home in the school. www.regionalmagazine.co.uk

PROMOTIONI DID IT MY WAY
The best possible service at the best possible price – that’s the pledge from I Did It My Way. Did It My Way has just entered its fourth year of trading and the April 13 will be its third anniversary. Their costs remain as low as ever and they constantly strive to provide the best service, at a price people can afford. A funeral can be conducted with dignity, respect and love without having to spend a fortune, and their funerals are testament to this. Their straight-to-crematorium service currently stands at £1,660 and can be attended by close family members. There is no service but this allows mourners to say goodbye in a way that best suits them. This service will also be booked at the family’s convenience. Just because there is no service does not mean that the family’s wishes should not be honoured at a time which best suits them. I Did It My Way’s basic service is £2,150 (cremation only), with no other costs to pay. A colourful coffin depicting the client’s life, or something special about them, with the hearse
I
and a limousine, is fully inclusive at £2,900 (cremation only). The price remains the same for a wicker coffin, which also prove to be very popular. The pre-payment business is increasing daily; an increasing number of people are planning ahead as death and dying are no longer regarded as taboo. Peace of mind for families at such a difficult time appears to be made much easier when their loved one has planned ahead. There are no worries with a prepaid funeral, and the price quoted now is what you will pay, regardless of the date it is needed. Steve and the team pride themselves on the level of service they offer, they believe in acting in their clients’ best interests at all times. For enquiries please phone 0114 3274936.

SIXEREATING OUT

FUN ON THE RUN Fiona Barber goes to the dogs in style at Owlerton Stadium’s Panorama restaurant. he lights were lowered, the cutlery had been put down and all eyes were on the track as the commentator announced “the hare is on the move,” signalling the start of the fifth race. We cheered gleefully as Ding Blue stretched out in front, claiming the win and – thankfully – put an end to our losing streak. With a beer in hand, football on the television, a panoramic view of the Owlerton dog track, and Tote runners taking our bets at the table, my sportloving boyfriend was in his element. And, while I’m no gambling expert, I have to admit there is no better place to relax and enjoy a piece of the action than in Owlerton’s Panorama restaurant. We arrived early one Friday evening and the 300-seater restaurant was already buzzing with people enjoying the lively atmosphere and seasonal menu. There’s a wide variety of dishes and to start I opted for the tandoorispiced chicken wings. The generous portion came beautifully presented in a poppadom basket, topped with a cooling mint yoghurt – the perfect dish to enjoy with a refreshing glass of Sauvignon blanc. My partner’s Cumberland sausage toad in the hole was just the hearty dish he’d been hoping for and, with a healthy serving of apple and sage

gravy, it was an ideal savoury indulgence. Mains were equally impressive and my chargrilled sirloin steak arrived perfectly medium-rare accompanied by beautiful buttery mash potato and a luxurious mushroom and tarragon sauce – a real meaty treat. Across the table, my partner was tucking into a beer-braised lamb shank so succulent the meat easily fell from the bone. Served with a very generous portion of vegetable bubble and squeak, truly delicious crisp roast potatoes and complemented by a fragrant rosemary scented jus, he readily savoured each mouthful. Following such a feast, my partner sensibly opted for a light, velvety tiramisu. I, on the other hand, dared to take on the jam roly poly and was rewarded with sponge oozing with hot jam and smothered in creamy custard. Throughout the meal our winning streak had continued, but as ever, the odds were in the bookie’s favour and, by the time desserts had been cleared, our pot was back to zero – it was time to cut our losses and leave. Nevertheless it had been an incredibly entertaining evening and we had thoroughly enjoyed the whole experience – so much so, we’re already planning a return visit with friends.

Testimonials Debbie Cundy, Oughtibridge We appointed Michael McGovan Plumbing to transform our family bathroom, downstairs cloakroom and utility room in September of last year. We found him and the rest of the guys very professional and friendly and the work that was carried out was to a very high standard. I felt I could trust them to get on with the work and wouldn’t hesitate to recommend them to anyone. We are really pleased with the end result; our expectations have been completely exceeded and the customer service was fantastic. We found them reliable, trustworthy and the finish was fantastic – it really looks lovely. Zoe and Andy Scott, Lodge Moor We were recommended Michael McGovan Plumbing through a friend and he did my mum and dad’s bathroom. We were so pleased with what he did for them, he has now done two out of three of our bathrooms and is starting on the last one in a few weeks. His quotes have been reasonable and he has taken the time to check everything and even signpost us to a really good supplier, who he has liaised with on our behalf. We have had one wet room and one main bathroom installed including a bath, corner shower, toilet, tiling and underfloor heating. He’s done a fantastic job and we’re really pleased. His apprentice Billy is a really well-mannered young lad and they have been very respectful of our home and always pack up and leave the work area in a reasonable state – having a young daughter it’s important that things aren’t just left. Sometimes you hear of horror stories and luckily, we’ve not had anything of that. Michael is a decent honest bloke and has made sure everything is exactly as I want it to be. I really can’t fault them.
