D E E P C A R HOME IMPROVEMENTS EST 1978

Ian Clancy at the start of his business career

In 1976 school-leaver Ian Clancy learned his trade at a local double-glazing company before making the leap two years later of going it alone. A young enthusiastic worker Ian was described as ‘always first on site and last on site’. It wasn’t long before the hard-working Ian bought his first and current premises on Manchester Road in Deepcar, and set up his own window company Deepcar. These premises are now home to a brand new showroom showing off the latest range of products

from tiled roof system conservatories to composite doors. Early success was to follow when in 1983 Ian was named winner of Yorkshire Televisions ‘Young Enterprise - Businessman of the year’. Ian still has the very first door made by Deepcar back in 1978. Still in perfect working order, the door sits proudly at the back of the showroom, illustrating Deepcar’s pride in their humble beginnings. Ian beams “Our aim is the same today as it was back then - we will provide the best products and best customer service.” He continues “In today’s busy world we pride ourselves in looking after you the customer and will offer the same level of service whether you are having a new conservatory or a lock fixed on your window. Ian’s two young sons Tom and Joe, who

show the same hard-working and conscientious qualities to their father are now helping the successful window company build on the 39 years of trading. After nearly four decades of providing unparalleled products and service, Deepcar invite you to view the latest in home improvements at their new showroom. If its experience, quality and reliability you are looking for look no further than Deepcar.

ToyBox Children’s Nursery Ltd This year ToyBox will be celebrating their tenth birthday and would like to thank Dawn, the founder of the nursery, for her continued support and input along with thanking staff for being brilliant early years practitioners and always working hard to stay ahead of new practices and introduce innovative activities for the children. To mark the anniversary they have changed the business to a limited company and now have a slightly different name – ToyBox Children’s Nursery Ltd. They’re also planning lots of exciting new developments within the nursery this year to meet the needs of the growing company. Wharncliffe School Wharncliffe Side Primary school

Choir performances

ork KS2 Drama w

Located on the outskirts of Sheffield in a beautiful rural setting, Wharncliffe is a small school providing for children from two to 11 years old. They’re proud of the attitudes and behaviour of pupils and aim for them to be well prepared and enthusiastic for the next stage of their education. The nursery has a small two and three-year-old section and integrated resource facilities for pupils with special needs and disabilities. It also has a well-resourced outdoor area where children enjoy the benefits of learning outdoors, including activities such as forest schools. In the main primary classes, children learn through a cross-curricular topic approach and the staff put a great deal of value on children developing into well-rounded individuals but also they like pupils to develop their own interests and talents such as sport and music. The pupils predominantly move to Bradfield Secondary School but a small number of pupils will go to other schools such as Stocksbridge High Sheffield, Forge Valley, Girls High School or one of Sheffield’s specialist schools. Here comes the summer! SPRING HAS SPRUNG AND IT’S TIME TO SHED THE THERMALS… ALMOST. Tony Gibb, a professional cyclist for 15 years winning world and national titles, is now a commentator and presenter for Eurosport and the owner of Full Gas Bikes and Full Gas Cycling events. The Tour de Yorkshire is coming, and you’re probably not ready!

pring’s here…well let’s not bust out the paddling pools just yet! But there have been those odd days where you step outside and think, hang on just a second, I don’t quite need the full thermals and double winter gloves, or in non-cycling terms, I don’t need the winter jacket, hat, gloves and scarf! The problem is, one day it’s 15 degrees and were all walking around in short sleeves like its summer, the next, its two degrees and sleeting, and that is why, as my mum would say, everyone is getting ill, there seems to be a lot if “it” about. I think “it” is a horrible winter cold that hangs around for weeks. A bike shop, probably more than any other shop I can think of, sees summer coming. First, the work shop starts to get very busy, everyone getting that puncture fixed for that ride around the reservoir, the bike fit studio is full most days and the visitors to the store start showing interest in

S

buying the bikes and not just kicking the tires. The long-established cyclists start looking at the new bikes for the year and the racing guys are eying up those new carbon wheels and sun glasses that look like you could survive the space shuttle re-entry process. In other news, we are proud to have been awarded a grant to install a Yorkshire Bank bike library at Full Gas bikes. This is a great initiative which makes bike available for anyone and everyone to loan out. With all that going on, with events almost weekly to get everyone ready for the Tour de Yorkshire, if you haven’t visited Full Gas bikes at Fox Valley yet, you really should, you don’t know what you’re missing. Tony Gibb Managing Director www.fullgasbikes.co.uk

HOME TO THE FINAL STAGE FINISH OF THE 2017 TOUR DE YORKSHIRE ! Spring is well and truly here, if you are looking for your new bike now that the good weather is here, or just need that puncture repaired on the bike that’s been in the shed forever, come on down to Full Gas Bikes at Fox Valley, Stocksbridge where we have everything you could ever want or need. GARDEN TRENDS

GLORIOUS GARDENS SPRING HAS SPRUNG AND IT’S TIME TO SPRUCE UP THE GARDEN READY FOR THE SUMMER. BY HANNAH SANDERS. ow that the colder months are finally behind us, it’s time to embrace the longer days and put our green fingers to good use. Whether you’re a beginner or an advanced gardener, you’ll know that spring is one of the busiest times and the need to prepare for the upcoming months is crucial. Here are some top tips to help you.

N

Get it in shape

CHOOSE YOUR STYLE

Get rid of weeds

As the weather becomes warmer, your garden will start to feel alive again. The weeds that you dread to see will start appearing, along with ivy and brambles too. It is best to get rid of them as soon as possible.

After tending to your garden with all the general after-winter care, it’s time to start focussing on what style you’re going to go for this year. 2017 is full of new and exciting garden trends, from colour blocking and natural materials to vertical gardening - there’s something to suit every taste.

Keep it trim

Colour Hit

Start pruning dead, overcrowded branches or stems. Ornamental grasses, perennials, evergreens along with rose bushes and shrubs need pruning in early spring.

This involves creating blocks of colour, whether it’s with a painted area behind a planter, coloured tiles or even a solid coloured outdoor rug. Living blocks of colour are on trend too; greens, browns and reds are easy to achieve by using plants. Use clever plant selections to get brighter colours such as pinks or yellows. Also pick plants that change

colour seasonally, to give your garden a fresh lease of life every season. Light up

Outdoor lighting is not only being used to highlight horticulture but, also to serve as mood lighting for outdoor events. Invest in some LED fairy or solar powered lights and create a walkway through your garden or, simply decorate trees and bushes to add some sparkle. Vertical Gardening

With garden space at a premium, plants are headed the same way as architecture; vertically. Taller plants have become increasingly captivating, serving as a great alternative for urban gardeners. Wall planting is set to be a big feature of 2017, so invest in some hanging shrubbery and create your own wonder-wall.

Mow your lawn

This is the job you’ve probably been avoiding- as it really isn’t the most fun. But as the rain is easing off, it’s time to break out the lawn mower and give your grass a much needed haircut. 28 Sixer | www.sixermagazine.co.uk

The Urban Jungle Smaller houses, more people renting and a passion for seventies kitsch has led to a trend for more indoor plants. It’s easy to create a small indoor garden with wall hangings, shelves and terrariums, adding a new lease of life into your home which is easy to care for. Look out for cacti as they are set to be the 2017 trend for indoor plants.

GARDEN TRENDS

POPULAR VEGETABLES TO GROW Growing your own vegetables can be very beneficial to cost and saving. If you’re thinking about growing crops, the middle of April is the best time to do so. Focus on how much space you have in your garden; this will tell you what you can grow. If space is limited, think about buying dwarf selections or patio vegetables. However make sure you weed before planting, as if not the area can become overcrowded. Carrots

Best grown in the open ground and in hot weather. If the foliage starts wilting, water the carrots every ten days. Be careful not to crush the foliage, as this can attract carrot flies - putting a barrier over the carrots can prevent this. Potatoes

When the stems are 23cm high, it’s essential that you start ‘earthing up’; dragging soil up covering the stems to produce a 15cm high range. This is a must as it protects developing potatoes from a substance called light which causes potatoes to become green in colour and poisonous. Leaf Lettuce

Thin seedlings when leaves start to appear, proceed until the plants are 30cm apart. Water the plants when the soil is dry in the mornings. Watch out for slugs and sparrows; make a barrier to put around them.

Back to Basics

Instead of the clean-cut modern look, landscapers are going back to the DIY image of the 1970s. Expect more natural materials, running rivers and wooden décor this year. To create a stress-free natural look try using repurposed old wood, driftwood, plant pots, or even create a rockery.

Plants to look out for

Old and new mash-up

English marigold Bright and cheery annual plants that will bloom early summer. They are easy to care for and available in dwarf and tall varieties. Plant in full sun and rich soil.

It isn’t about choosing one style and sticking to it this year. Try bringing both traditional and modern elements into your garden to make it more eyecatching and unique. Pair handmade artisan wares next to furniture with a modern design or in front of a painted wall. New plants on the scene

Zinnia Last year it was a calendula, along with the mountain pepper and Golden Duchess. This year gardeners are keen to find plants that can stand up to the tough weather. Fleuroselect have mentioned that 2017 will be the year of the zinnia, bean and begonias.

After preparing our garden for springtime, it’ll be time to think about making it colourful in time for the glorious summer sun. Here are some popular flowers for this year.

Zinnia One of the easiest plants to grow and bloom heavily. Plant in full sun and rich fertile soil. When the seedlings reach three inches tall, thin them so they’re six to eighteen inches apart.

Comfortable seating

Gone are the days of hard wooden benches, or metal chairs, now it is time for comfortable outdoor seating. Invest in some colourful @SixerRMC

cushions and outdoor throws for your furniture. If you want something more unusual, try a swinging round seat or daybed. Hyperlocalism

Plants or vegetables with a local connection are set to see a boom. Look at plants native to your local area and take inspiration from nearby woods, parks or hedgerow. Talk to a garden centre about what would suit your garden. Outdoor kitchens

Garden kitchens go perfectly with outdoor seating. BBQ are not the only thing outside anymore, gradually fridges, work surfaces, sinks and fire pits have made their way outside and this trend will only continue to grow. White plants

White plants are more of a returning trend than a new one. The flowers glow at night, which will complement any outdoor seating. Try water growing vegetables

Having a constant supply of fresh organic vegetables is difficult if you have limited garden space. Try putting the roots of various vegetables including celery, green onion and cabbage in a water bowl and watch them regrow. Sixer | www.sixermagazine.co.uk 29

Spring your lawn back to life! Spring marks the arrival of longer days, warmer weather and gardens in bloom. So when it comes to making the most of the great outdoors, now is the time to take action to make sure the jewel in the crown - your lawn, doesn’t let you down.

before

after

By taking some basic steps now, means you will reap the rewards of creating a great outdoor space where you can relax, play and entertain with pride. Important jobs for spring include raking away debris that is depriving your lawn of essential light, seeding any bare patches and giving the grass that all important first cut of the year. Remember to use the highest blade setting to avoid cutting the grass too short which can attract unwanted weeds and moss.

EASTER

OUR WINNER Charbonnel et Walker pink Marc de Champagne truffles and milk chocolate egg, 225g £26 As delicious strawberry truffles, encased in a smooth milk chocolate egg, wrapped in a bow and then presented in a beautiful pink and blue box with gorgeous illustrations and gold writing, this egg was proof that good things really do come in small packages. Our panel were impressed by the silky chocolate in the centre of the truffles – and the champagne flavour certainly gave them a kick. This is the perfect Easter present for that special person in your life.

TOP OF THE CHOCS! OUR PANEL REVEALS THIS YEAR’S TOP EASTER EGGS. hen it comes to choosing Easter eggs for our friends and family nowadays, we are absolutely spoilt for choice. But which ones are best suited to who? To help with this predicament, our chocolate

W

tasting panel tried some of the most indulgently delicious chocolates and eggs on the market. Read on to find out which we rated the most eggcelent and which one was crowned our king of confectionary.

BEST FOR KIDS Tesco Doug the Dinosaur egg 200g, £3.50 Like all good child-friendly treats, this egg is shaped like a lovable character. Whilst this milk chocolate egg isn’t the best of the bunch, it is certainly cheap and cheerful - especially when you have a number of nephews and nieces to please.

BEST TRADITIONAL Cadbury’s Roses egg 300g, £6 Cadbury’s Roses are a must at Christmas time, so why not enjoy them at Easter too? Not only do you get a good-sized egg with the nostalgic taste we all know and love, you also get a few Roses to enjoy too.

BEST NEWCOMER Nestlé Quality Street Honeycomb Crunch egg 162g, £3 Whilst we are all familiar with Quality Streets, the honeycomb crunch is a new choc off the old block. Whilst we can sometimes feel cheated by a hollow egg, this one is quite thick with plenty of pieces of saccharine honeycomb running through it. 42 Sixer | www.sixermagazine.co.uk

EASTER

BEST DECORATED Bettys white chocolate rabbit egg 150g, £10.50 The gorgeous marbled effect, rabbit design and the way this egg combines white, milk and dark chocolate means this egg is a great all-rounder. Children and adults alike would be delighted to receive this and the flavours are fantastic too.

BEST FOR ALLERGIES Booja Booja almond and sea salt caramel egg 138g, £17.95 We couldn’t decide what we were more impressed by; the gorgeously painted wooden egg-shaped container or the delightful truffles inside. In the end we went with the latter, as these truffles are dairy, soya and gluten free, and still manage to taste great.

BEST FOR GROWN UP KIDS Prestat London Gin truffles and lemon milk chocolate egg 170g, £17.50 This egg was certainly the cleverest of the bunch. The white chocolate exterior of the truffles contained popping candy and represented the fizzy tonic whilst the smooth milk chocolate centre had a strong and satisfying flavour. The lemon flavour in the chocolate egg was subtle, but delicious none-the-less.

BEST ORGANIC OPTION Montezuma’s organic milk chocolate button egg 250g, £9.99 Not only is this egg organic, it’s also gluten free. If you’ve experienced the usual grainy, no-thrills variety of gluten-free chocolate, you’ll be pleased to hear that this one has a smooth texture and a great flavour.

BEST FOR WHITE CHOCOLATE LOVERS Sainsbury’s Belgian white chocolate and pistachio egg 220g, £6 Great for those that like their chocolate with a twist, the crunchy pistachios proved a delicious contrast to the smooth texture of the egg. If you are a sweet tooth, you won’t be disappointed by this reasonably sized, great-value option.

We are so grateful for the time and care they took over our design, which resulted in an absolutely stunning kitchen. They are so imaginative and practical too. It was the best design we had seen, by far. “Our kitchen is truly unique, superb quality throughout, and the price was very fair and reasonable and came well within our budget. A garden for Jordan

AS WELL AS CREATING AN OUTDOOR PLAY AREA FOR HIS TERMINALLY ILL GRANDSON, KEVAN ADAMS IS ALSO RAISING MONEY FOR SHEFFIELD CHILDREN’S HOPSITAL CHARITY – AND HE NEEDS YOUR HELP. BY RACHEL MARTIN.

FEATURE

Work to clear the garden is already well under way

evoted grandad Kevan Adams is reaching out to local volunteers to help him create a back garden ‘oasis’ for his grandson. Two-year-old Jordan Reid was diagnosed with childhood ATRT (atypical teratoid rhabdoid tumour) in summer 2016, a very rare, clinically aggressive tumor of the central nervous system. Jordan has since spent almost a year under the care of Dr Anna Jenkins, consultant paediatric oncologist at Sheffield Children’s Hospital and has recently undergone treatment including surgery, chemotherapy and a six-week course of radiotherapy, which ended in early February. Despite undergoing treatment, Jordan’s tumour has left him with ongoing health problems that his family have to manage on a daily basis. “As a family it is important to give Jordan the best life possible and make sure he is a happy little boy,” says Kevan. “The cancer is still classed as terminal and Jordan is supported by a tracheostomy tube to aid his breathing and a nasal gastric tube for feeding. He is also unable to communicate due to his vocal cords being fused as part of the life-saving surgery.” Jordan has since been in and out of intensive care, causing much worry and angst for the family, and Kevan is reaching out to volunteers to help, by making his garden accessible. He aspires to level the plot, build a fence and replace the turf with artificial grass. “Jordan comes alive when he’s outdoors,” says Kevan. “Towards the end of last year we decided to make a safe area outside of the house for him to play in, including a new playhouse.

D

“Being disabled myself, I knew I was going to have to ask a lot of people for help, but thanks to the kindness and generosity of the local community our vision is halfway to becoming a reality.” Relaying the patio has since created a 20inch drop, however, and Kevan’s garden is once again unsafe for Jordan to play in. “I regret to disclose that due to having to relay the patio earlier this year, the garden is once again unsafe for Jordan, and I am reaching out to volunteers to help, in any way they can, to complete the project.” Kevan and a handful of volunteers are also building a model railway in Jordan’s name to help raise vital funds for Sheffield Children’s

Thank-yous... “I want to thank the following for their support in creating Jordan’s playhouse, it was a huge success and we couldn’t have completed it without your help,” says Kevan. “Richard Bagnall, Burton Street Recycling, MP Plastic Building Products, DaVally Garden Services, Eurocell, Alan Sides Electricians, Insight, Highlander, Lew Electrical, Wholesale Artificial Grass, Hardcores, MKM Building Supplies, Pagets, Minster, Superb Flooring, Collins Skips, Just Trade Windows, Danny and Steve King (without them we would not be as far on as we are now) and a number of local volunteers who helped during the construction phase. “I would also like to thank Keith, Kevin D, Timber Specialists, Arnold Laver, Geoff Blenkarn, Scalescenes, Scale Models, Bachmann, Peco, Mike Hall, Liebherr, DeMag, The Stobbart Group, Alex and Abi Reid, for their support in the model railway layout.”

Hospital Charity at the Glasgow Model Railway Exhibition in February 2018. “I know that people with ATRT can live for many years and obviously this is what I am hoping and praying for, but I am also hopeful that a cure can be found, hence my fundraising for Sheffield Children’s Hospital Charity,” says Kevan. “I feel we owe the staff for everything they have done for us, especially Jordan. Without them, he would not be here today. “I am not looking for a monetary donation, but to help make the layout as close to reality as possible. The scale is 1:76 and the themes are a modernised version of Brendam Docks, from the Thomas the Tank Engine series, and Knapford station. “The areas we need help with are the dockside and modern freight terminal and I am looking for dockside equipment and ship unloading equipment in the scale of 1:76. We are also looking for vehicles of the same scale. “I am also desperately seeking space to setup the layout. Ideally, I am looking for someone to donate space for a year, with electric and toilet facilities on ground level.” If you would like to get involved, or help in any way, contact Kevan on 07586 483218. ATRT is very rare and is found in fewer than ten per cent of children with brain tumours. Because of the aggressive nature of these tumours, ATRT is difficult to cure, but treatment advances are being made. Current advances in therapy have helped older children and children with tumours that can be completely removed have an improved survival. New therapy is also being investigated in clinical trials. The goal is to increase the cure rates and improve survival in very young children and in children who have disease that cannot be surgically removed.

Understated luxury

IT’S THE LITTLE THINGS THAT CAN MAKE A BIG DIFFERENCE... CHRIS WILSON ENJOYS A TOUCH OF ITALIAN HOSPITALITY IN THE CAPITAL.

Room with a view... A suite at the Baglioni makes for a relaxing stay

t was all going so well… we were part of the tourist throng in central London on the last hot weekend of the year. After an early breakfast, Westminster Abbey and the National Portrait Gallery had been ticked off our ‘must visit’ list. The turning leaves told us autumn was on its way, but temperatures soared into the seventies and the dress code was short sleeves and sunscreen. The first sign of trouble was an innocuous little announcement of delays on some lines due to signal failures on the underground. Sod’s law dictated that every conceivable tube journey back to our hotel in Kensington and then on to St Pancras for our train home was suddenly running a drastically reduced service. Cue mild panic and instantly revised plans. Forget that last leisurely lunch; it was time to head back to the hotel, grab our bags and sweat it out one last time on the tube in the

hope we would not miss our connection. By the time we made it back to what had been the base for a fabulous city break, you could say we were hot and bothered, but a guardian angel was ready to come to our rescue. Enter the immaculately suited-and-booted Alessandro Convertino, manager of the Baglioni, a rather lovely Italian-owned-andstyled boutique hotel in a prime position opposite the entrance to Kensington Gardens. On hearing the reason for our rushed exit, Mr Convertino had a suggestion. The hotel had a snazzy Maserati car for the complimentary use of residents which had just left to drop a party off at Harrods but would be back in five minutes… would we like a lift to the train station? Well, there was only one answer. Panic over, calm was restored, and during our smooth journey across London in airconditioned luxury we could ponder at @SixerRMC

leisure one simple fact… the Baglioni Hotel and all who work there are one class act. OK, so he only offered us a lift. Common courtesy, you might say. But this gesture of kindness was just typical of the attention to detail that made the base for our two-day stay a lot more than just a place to stash the bags and sleep. The Baglioni is all about understated luxury and overwhelming comfort. With dark wooden floors throughout and high ceilings there is a lovely sense of space at all times, and the chocolate and gold colour scheme gives the bar and lounge a delightfully relaxing feel. Service is friendly, understated but immaculate nonetheless. Our suite was the last word in modern comfort with a separate dressing room, a lounge with a sofa and chaise and writing desk, a bedroom with a king-sized bed and a spectacular bathroom of black mirrored granite. There was even a fancy Italian

cappuccino maker… I really should have learned how to use it. No matter, the coffee to accompany fresh-baked breakfast pastries was simply superb. Trust the Italians to appreciate the importance of a proper brew to kick-start the morning. Osteria 60 is the name given to the hotel’s chic, recently refurbished restaurant. It has won many plaudits in London as a stand-alone dining venue and the highlights from a menu inspired by traditional trattorias of the 1950s included ridiculously tender Wagyu beef, succulent lobster and the sharpest Amalfi lemon tart. Tempting though it was to linger in the hotel (and they have a gym and spa if you feel so inclined), we were in a prime spot for one of my favourite London pursuits… strolling. We enjoyed a blissful sunset walk in Kensington Gardens. Kensington Palace is just a few minutes away, and with the round pond, the Serpentine and Hyde Park’s stunning Italian gardens all close by, there is no better way to relax on a bright, sunny evening (even if the constant screech of the vivid green parakeets that have made these parks their home mean the atmosphere is never totally tranquil). Stepping out of the hotel there are also some fascinating sights to be found simple by walking in the connected suburbs of Kensington, Bayswater and Notting Hill. This is embassy territory, and tucked away along these picture perfect streets and crescents with their immaculate whitepainted houses we stumbled across the embassies of Ukraine, Moldova, Iraq, the Netherlands and Russia. Of course, even when you have based yourself in a hotel with a splendid restaurant, you still want to sample something of London’s restaurant scene. I’ve come a cropper over the years, mainly by breaking the golden rule of never eating in areas that are obviously attractive

The Baglioni is well positioned in Kensington (main picture) while the Royal China (below) is worth a visit if you’re a fan of Chinese food

almost exclusively to tourists. You’re only passing through; you might not even tip so why should they bother. Know the feeling? I guess you’ve also succumbed to the fatal hypnotic effect of Chinatown. But I love Chinese food and really wanted to sample the real thing, as eaten by Londoners. I found it on the opposite side of Kensington Gardens at the Royal China on Queensway in Bayswater. Dim sum has been popular here for decades and the queues start at breakfast time on Sundays. An unassuming entry off a busy shopping street gives way to the substantial Oriental dining room with gold-leaf ceiling, which was buzzing with a lively atmosphere. Here we dined handsomely on steamed dumplings of crab and spinach and prawn and coriander, spare ribs in black bean sauce, sesame prawn rolls, crispy fried squid balls and authentically wobbly cheung fun with peanut sauce. London pubs are pretty special too and again, if you just veer slightly off the tourist trail you will be rewarded with proper, unspoiled watering holes. To name just a few, the Goat on Kensington High Street is one of London’s oldest and is rarely quiet, while The Elgin in Notting Hill is slightly bohemian in feel. Then it’s back to the Baglioni for a nightcap, sweet dreams and another taste of luxury, Italian-style. Sixer | www.sixermagazine.co.uk 61

The team at Bradfield Brewery with centre manager at Fox Valley, Annabel Plumtree

Yorkshire’s biggest bike race inspires Sheffield brewery with special celebration beer North Sheffield’s Bradfield Brewery has unveiled a special beer in celebration of the Tour de Yorkshire cycle race, which will finish at Fox Valley on 30 April. The team at the brewery have come up with the bike-themed tipple called “Farmers Push Iron” in the build up to the big event which will see the eyes of the cycling world focussed on north Sheffield and on the area’s notorious hill climbs. The family-run brewery is based just a few minutes from the route of the Tour de Yorkshire’s final day, which will test the cyclists with four tough hill climbs including the Cote de Wigtwizzle and Cote de Ewden Heights. Thousands of amateur cyclists will also take part in in the Maserati Tour de Yorkshire Ride, which will start and finish at Fox Valley on the final day of the threeday race. John Gill from Bradfield Brewery said: “The Tour de Yorkshire coming to our corner of the county really is something special to celebrate and we’ll definitely be raising a glass of Farmers Push Iron to the cyclists as they take on our beautiful part of South Yorkshire and tackle some of Sheffield’s notorious seven hills.” Push Iron will be available at pubs along the route of the Tour de Yorkshire, as well as in bottles and mini kegs at the Brewery shop in Bradfield. 64 Sixer | www.sixermagazine.co.uk

New park on site of former Wisewood School moving forward Plans for a new park on the site of the former Wisewood Secondary School in north Sheffield are moving forward. Sheffield City Council had previously agreed to the exchange of a parcel of land from the former school site, which closed in 2011, with part of Spider Park. The proposal would see part of the former school site developed as a new playground, while part of the existing Spider Park, off Sevenfields Lane on the WadsleyWisewood border, be developed for housing. Now the council has approved an extra sliver of land in the deal, around a third of an acre to ensure that the quality of housing and impact on the surrounding area is sympathetic. The council can now progress the disposal of the land to the preferred bidder, who will be required to submit a planning application, with the monies raised from the sale funding the installation and maintenance of the new playground. The proposed new children’s play area on part of the school site would help to meet the shortage of children’s play facilities in the local area and complete a recreational hub to complement the Wisewood Sports Centre, run by Places 4 People, and floodlit artificial pitches.

Local cycling enthusiast to give inspiring talk for charity Local cycling enthusiast and fundraiser, Debbie Cundy, will be raising even more funds for Weston Park Cancer Charity, when she gives a talk at the HSBC Sports & Social Club on 27 April. She shares with you some of her cycling exploits from over recent years, which have helped transform her life, and continues to support the lives of many others. On the eve of the Tour de Yorkshire, why not come along and be inspired to move forward on your own journey? There is ample free parking outside. Arrive 15 minutes to allow time to be seated. Refreshments will be available. The event is free, just visit www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/on-yer-bike-an-inspirational-cycling-talkfor-weston-park-cancer-charity-tickets-32929887179 to register your place.

Lindsey (left) and Holly

Mum’s the words as Lindsey and Holly sign up for marathon challenge Stocksbridge mums Lindsey Fawcett and Holly Jones are swapping the school run for a tougher run as they prepare to compete in the Asics Greater Manchester Marathon. The friends both lost their dads to prostate cancer, with Lindsey’s dad Jim spending his final days as a patient at St Luke’s Hospice. It was seeing the standards of care that both Jim and the whole family received that inspired Lindsey to get into training for the marathon challenge. And when she heard about the event, Holly was happy to get into training and join her friend on the road. “Neither of us has ever done a full marathon before but having completed the Sheffield Half Marathon last year, we started doing longer runs together and we eventually started to talk about the possibility of signing up for a marathon,” said Lindsey. “We booked places on the Manchester Marathon because we knew after the Sheffield Half that it

would at least be a flatter course!” Having maintained a regular training schedule throughout the winter, the pair are on target for a successful conclusion to the challenge on Sunday 2 April. “We’ve managed 22 miles up to now so although the last four miles are the hardest, we’re hoping that adrenalin and the crowds will get us across the finish line on the day,” said Holly. And giving them that extra push will be the thought that every step is raising money for Sheffield’s only hospice. “The support my dad had was just amazing,” said Lindsey. “I couldn’t believe we had these facilities available and it was a real comfort to know that a place like St Luke’s exists. “It was calm and dignified and the whole family were able to stay with him right through to the end.” To support Lindsey and Holly, visit https://www.justgiving.com/ fundraising/Holly-Lindsey

Signature Loxley Park

The best of both worlds KATH ENJOYS A BUSY SOCIAL LIFE AT SIGNATURE LOXLEY PARK WHERE THERE’S CARE IF SHE NEEDS IT AND INDEPENDENCE IF SHE DOESN’T. ath Cottingham has always been a socialite. Ever-since her daughter was diagnosed with Prader-Willi Syndrome (a rare medical condition), she has harnessed her connections to raise money for this and many other charitable causes. “I’m still well-known in Sheffield for my fundraising,” she says. “People used to see me with my big handbag and say, ‘Kath’s here with her raffle tickets again!’” Kath has embraced life at Signature and takes an active role in the community. She lives in the independent living side of Loxley Park and plans on getting more involved with events there. She still drives, has a busy social life and is fiercely independent, so many of her friends were surprised when she moved. “I chose to move here because I can enjoy the best of both worlds,” says Kath. “The staff are here to help, but also put on events and really get into it. We celebrated the Queen’s birthday, Burns Night, St Patrick’s Day and so much more. They don’t do things by halves!” Kath is a “glass half full person” and her positive attitude has helped her through the hard times and to fully appreciate the good. Her mother died when she was two, whilst her father died when she was eleven. She was brought up by her aunt and uncle, but felt lucky to be brought up in a loving home. Kath married in 1957, then spent three years in Kenya. She returned to England, before the birth of her two children Michelle and Nigel. At 30, Kath had her first child, Michelle. Though Michelle died at the age of 37 of kidney failure, Kath treasures every moment. “I asked the consultant what the lifespan was. He said, ‘late teens’ so I said, “forget it! She’s staying

K

with me!’ She had a good life. She’d travel the world with us and had a great sense of humour.” Then at 35, Kath got into ice dancing. She has lived in Fulwood most her life and used to practice at the old ice skating rink on Queens Road. It was only in her 70s that problems with her knees prevented her from continuing the hobby. However, Kath says that some of her fondest memories are from her later years. “2003 didn’t start well, but around my 70th birthday in October things changed. First, I flew to New York and returned three days later on Concord. After one day back in the UK, I flew with my son, Nigel, to Las Vegas for a week. When I returned, there was a surprise birthday party organised for me at the Canton Orchard.” Kath’s other most memorable moments include a hot air balloon ride over the Valley of the Kings in Egypt for her 75th birthday. Though jet-setting and thrill-seeking have given Kath some brilliant memories, life is about the people you share them with. “One of my highlights was when Nigel came back for my 80th birthday. His son, Ned had just been born so I didn’t expect it. It was lovely.” Kath continues to live a full life at Signature. She has been an active member of her local floral club (part of the National Association of Flower Arrangement Societies) for 35 years and continues to go to meetings and events. These are a few memories of a full and generally happy life so far…

Hitting a high note TOP MUSICIANS HEAD FOR HIGH BRADFIELD’S ANNUAL CELEBRATION OF MUSIC. ulian Lloyd Webber, Nicola Benedetti, Tasmin Little, Jennifer Pike, Wihan Quartet, Emma Johnson MBE and John Lenehan are just some of the classical music superstars that have featured in the past editions of the Bradfield Festival of Music, held every June in the fairytale setting of St Nicholas' Church, High Bradfield. The festival is not exclusively open to classical music royalty: throughout its history, the event has striven to celebrate both young and local musicians as well, working closely with Sheffield Music Hub and local ensembles, bands and soloists. 2017 will mark the 20th edition of the festival since its revival in 1998. Evidence from the Bradfield Parish archives shows that a music festival was held in the Parish Church on Whit Monday in 1813, 1825 and 1835. Little did those festival organisers of 200 years ago know that a week-long festival would be happening in the same church today. The 20th anniversary edition will start on Saturday 24 June 2017 and is set to be one of

J

the best yet. Highlights include The Academy of St Martin in the Fields Chamber Ensemble; Songsmiths featuring Elizabeth Watts; Nicky Spence, Christopher Ainslie and Audrey Hyland; the Escher String Quartet; Jacqui Dankworth with Charlie Wood; ZRI and Neil Taylor, organist and formerly director of music at Sheffield Cathedral, who will be in concert with Austonley Brass. Many of the artists included in the programme are not seen at other venues in this area. The festival strives to remain unique, and to ensure that only top quality music features in the events. The Bradfield Festival of Music is a registered charity and does not receive any national funding whatsoever, but does receive limited financial assistance from generous local business sponsors, local charities, and individual supporters. Donations are currently open – for more information on how to become a Festival Patron and information about the benefits this includes, please contact Keith Hoyland at bradfieldmusic@aol.com or on 0114 327 8393.

PROMOTION

Bev and Poppie

Put yourself in the picture CÚRO GALLERY CAN FRAME EVERYTHING FROM WEDDING BOUQUETS TO FOOTBALL SHIRTS AS WELL AS STOCKING ORIGINAL ARTWORK AND GIFTS. e all know at least one friend or family member who is almost impossible to buy for. Gift vouchers? Too impersonal. A shower and body spray set? Been there, done that. This time, get them something they will love for years to come with a little help from Cúro Gallery on Middlewood Road. Located opposite Hillsborough Park, it is a family-run art gallery and bespoke picture framing studio offering a wide selection of affordable original, limited and open edition art and photography – both framed and unframed, just mounted and packaged. If you are looking for an extra special gift, the gallery can do 3D box framing of anything from sports memorabilia to a gorgeous and seasonal bunch of flowers. “All our work is customised to the bespoke requirements of our customers,” says owner Bev Coukham. “From our popular wedding flower services through to preserving flowers from anniversaries, birthdays, proms, retirements, Mother’s Day and Valentine’s Day, we look forward to preserving all of your special memories. “We are also renowned for our sympathetic and personal memorial pieces. Working with clients and using our thoughtful designs, we create unique memory boxes to treasure. “Our bespoke framing service employs traditional methods and skills using the finest materials and equipment.” They also specialise in conservation framing

W

and restoration and do all of their framing inhouse. What’s more they support the community by undertaking art commissions using a range of resident and local artists from contemporary and modern art to photography, as well as gifts and jewellery by White Beach Designs and cards by Art Angels and other local artists. The business has been running successfully for over 22 years. Bev took over 18 months ago, and the gallery was recently renovated and restyled. “We have a wonderful customer base which is growing successfully with regular customers returning, many of whom have become close friends,” continues Bev. “We want our customers to feel as involved as they want in the process of creating their chosen framed products, mounts and designs, with customers being able to sit at a table with me surrounded by picture mouldings that they can take off the walls and try out.” The business is also a dog friendly gallery, with resident collie, Poppie, always keen to meet new canine friends and share a treat or two. But what makes the gallery such a refreshing experience is the team’s commitment to customer satisfaction and their love of art – without any of the pretentiousness often associated with galleries. “We are truly living a dream being able to enjoy artwork, crafts and joinery. Our attention to detail and the overall quality of our products is what sets us apart. @SixerRMC

“We are genuinely passionate about what we do, about our customers and what they like and we believe that the right frame can make all the difference to a piece of work or memento. “Above all we treat every piece of work as special, because many memories are stored in the pieces customers wish to preserve and frame. See what our customers say on our website’s testimonials page. “As the wedding season is coming up, call us to talk about having a bridal bouquet or memorable flowers preserved. We also have large mounts for signing, which can then framed with a photo or preserved flowers. “And with Tour de Yorkshire just around the corner, we look forward to framing shirts and memorabilia from this event too!” Cúro Gallery 193 Middlewood Road, Sheffield, S6 4HD Tel: 0114 285 5011 or 07733 083490 www.curogallery.co.uk Facebook: Curo-Gallery Twitter: @CuroGallery

Felt Roofing

GRP Roofing A fibreglass roof or GRP Roofing (glass reinforced plastic) will last for at least 30 years. Fibreglass matting is combined with layers of flexi resin to create a hard and durable, watertight laminate surface. A final top coat is available in a choice of colours with the option of a non-slip surface – ideal for walk ways.

Rubber Roofing A rubber roof or EPDM (ethylene propylene diene terpolymer) can be often installed in one complete layer without any joins. It is extremely light weight, elastic and tough. Rubber roofs are adhered to a wooden substrate. A well installed rubber roof can be a very good option.

Typically applied in a 3 layer system (layers of felt are melt welded together). A choice of colours and finishes are available. Typical lifespan is 20 years with excellent expansion and contraction properties.
