Resin bound surfaces, which can add colour and character to your outdoor spaces, are created by mixing aggregate material with a suitable resin compound which is then laid on the prepared surface min 16mm in depth to provide a smooth and aesthetically-pleasing surface.

They are most suitable for non-slip areas as the finish is not abrasive. Resin bound systems minimise puddles, ice and growth of mould and weeds and are easy to maintain; they simply need a jet wash or hose down, then swept clean.

Managing director Rob Barnett established the Eckington-based company over 15 years ago after having previously worked in the bridge and road construction industries, which included the installation of anti-skid surfaces.

This year’s event, which takes place on Monday 28 October, will be the fourth time we have held the event here and if the previous years are anything to go by, 2024’s ceremony is going to be another fantastic affair.

Rewinding back to last year, over 200 people packed out the Hillsborough venue, which opened in late 2019 and hosts a range of impressive multi-purpose suites with catering for up to 500 guests, a perfect setting for weddings, dinners, balls, conferences, live events and more. It

well organised, the service was faultless throughout the evening ensuring that the awards ran smoothly and without a hitch.

When it came to the 2023 Westside & Southside Restaurant & Bar Awards, competition was keen of course, and we were delighted at how many local

restaurants, bars and cafes entered into the festivities. It was fantastic to see all of the nominees together in one room, celebrating the superb quality of independent eateries found in our region and beyond.

One of our most popular awards on the night is the Readers’ Choice Award, voted of entries and after a close call between The Maynard, The George and The Wortley scooped the prize for the second year in over 700 votes.

Each of our 22 winners received an engraved plaque, which were presented on the night by publishing managers Mandy Ogle and Sally-Anne Sharp and publishing director Amanda Roy.

Young Chef of the Year

Do you have a bright spark working in your kitchen who is shaping up to be an outstanding chef of the future? If you do, now’s the time to shout about it, because Westside is staging another

Young Chef of the Year 2024.

Once again, the contest will be held at the MSK Academy Kitchen will be overseen by Len Unwin, Curriculum Team Leader of Catering and Hospitality, who will be assembling a panel of expert judges.

The competition is open to all North Derbyshire region and all chefs must be under the age of 23 on 1 August 2024.

Last year’s competing chefs were Charlie Downham of West 10, Oska Ready of DN1 Delicatessen & Dining, Max Heath of the Wortley Arms and Ashish Anand of The George, Hathersage.

Charlie triumphed on that occasion and joins an illustrious list of previous that also includes Chris Parker, who won the competition twice, as well as Lewis Platts, Dave Cockerill and Darren Utley.

e all have our ‘happy’ places and for many of us that is our gardens, whether we like to work in them, sit in them or just enjoy and peace and tranquillity they can provide. It’s no surprise that prolonged periods spent outside have been proven to have a positive effect on our wellbeing and can help to reduce anxiety and boost self-esteem and mood.

It’s something Kendall Turner certainly appreciates and it was in her garden –the solace she needed, and so much more.

Originally from Nottingham, Kendall completing a philosophy degree in Leeds. It was a completely new city and new experience for the couple who were taken in by its friendly nature and wonderful green spaces.

As a teacher working with children with special educational needs, Kendall found her role both rewarding but very challenging and was a time when she admits to feeling quite ‘low’. She found

“I would go, without fail, every day, rain or shine,” she recalled. “It felt like the only place where I’d got a good grip on things. My dad had an allotment for 30 years and I pretty much grew up on that. I’ve always loved gardening.”

It was while working on the allotment that the seeds for a career change were sown and Kendall was keen to share her own experience with others who might share similar feelings or circumstances.

“I just felt like everyone should have access to what’s making me feel better,” she said.

And so Bloom was born.

Bloom has four gardens: two spaces at Heeley and Meersbrook allotments and two private production gardens, one in Dore and one in Wortley Hall’s walled garden.

The original, which opened in 2019, is called ‘Baby Bloom’ with the bigger allotment space called ‘Big Bloom’ and it’s here where therapeutic horticulture groups – called Gardening to Feel Good – are held twice weekly.

“We’ll work closely with you to set achievable goals and create a personalised programme designed to improve your mental wellbeing,” explained Kendall. “As part of a supportive group of like-minded people, you’ll plant, weed, dig, sow, and sip tea in the fresh air until things start to feel easier.”

These courses last for eight weeks and Bloom accept people who have been

referred by doctors or health professionals or those who have self-referred.

“We wanted to keep the self-referral pathway open because we know that not everyone who is struggling with their mental health is under the care system,” added Kendall. “They may not feel

As well as the therapeutic horticulture groups, Bloom also have drop-in sessions twice weekly – called Gather and Grow – where you can help out on any of the gardens.

New for spring this year are baby and toddler groups, called Bloom Seedlings

and Bloom Saplings respectively. These will be held at Big Bloom with the former looking at connections to nature and to other parents whilst Saplings will be more of a forest school with a pond, digging pit, play areas and more.

Complementing the four gardens is a shop in Woodseats, which opened in July scented candles, soaps and other gifts, all

wellbeing programme with workshops covering everything from yoga and knitting to willow weaving and wreath making. It’s something they will be looking to repeat and grow in the future.

Kendall has had plenty of help along the way and is particularly thankful to fellow directors Kate and Jane who have helped to grow Bloom as well as the many volunteers and members that have made the social enterprise into what it is today.

“I knew how to grow stuff [when I started] but didn’t know how to run a business,” Kendall admitted. “I met Jane, she changed the game and had a lot of experience running businesses, particularly

I’ve learned so much,” she said. “I think what’s really nice about this community, we’re all sort of learning together. There’s no pressure to come and get it right straightaway, I think gardening can be intimidating for some people. We want people to just come and have a go, if it grows, great, if not, don’t worry about it.”

Bloom is very much a no pressure environment that allows people to participate as much or as little as they like. All that matters is that they get something out of it. And the sunshine and tea can’t hurt either.

Tramlines Festival has been given Council approval to continue taking place at Hillsborough Park.

The popular event has taken place in Hillsborough Park since 2018, when the initial licence was granted. Approval to enter into a revised licence agreement was given at a recent committee meeting, which includes a fee Councillor Ian Auckland, Chair of the Charity Trustee Subby many.
