The Sandersons team (from left): Managing director Deborah Holmes, assistant manager Kara Chapman, beauty ambassador Armand Beasley and manager Lisa Fox
The ultimate shopping experience INSPIRED BY THE WORLD’S BEST RETAILERS, THE NEW SANDERSONS BOUTIQUE DEPARTMENT STORE AT FOX VALLEY OFFERS A FANTASTIC MIX OF MUST-HAVE BRANDS. heffield’s newest department store is preparing to open its doors at Fox Valley next month with a top class team who are planning to bring a bit of theatre back into retail. The brand new Sandersons Boutique Department Store takes pride of place at the Fox Valley development in Stocksbridge. The shopping centre’s first phase was officially opened by Joanna Lumley OBE in June and Sandersons’ managing director Deborah Holmes is looking forward to bringing a host of fantastic brands to the area. Deborah, who was brought up in Stocksbridge and still lives in north Sheffield, said: “We have taken a little bit of inspiration from one of my favourite stores in the world - Henri Bendel on Fifth Avenue in New York. “We’ve blended this with inspiration from the fabulous retail offerings of independent department stores in our region such as Browns of York and Barkers in Northallerton. “We can’t wait to open the doors now and for customers to see all of our ideas and the lovely fashion, beauty and homewares brands that we have in store.” The main challenge was to offer something that is not available elsewhere in the region. Sandersons has done that with a fantastic mix of must-have brands including Ted Baker, Phase 8, White Stuff and Barbour alongside others that are new to north Sheffield such as In-Wear, Onjenu and Masai. They’ll also be joined by some great local products from Sheffield’s own British Silverware and The Sheffield Pewter Company, all making Sandersons a truly unique retail experience. “We have chosen brands which I hope really speak to the area and the customers we’ll attract - primarily fashion-conscious

ladies who have as much of an interest in premium clothing and beauty as they do in the fantastic countryside we have in this part of north Sheffield,” said Deborah. One of the most exciting and unique features of the new store is the involvement of the skincare expert, international make-up artist and presenter, Armand Beasley. Armand

is Sandersons’ skincare and beauty ambassador and will ensure that everyone gets five-star treatment in the bespoke cosmetics department. Armand has created looks for Hollywood royalty like Goldie Hawn and international royalty, including HRH the Sultanah of Pahang – and he has been a BAFTA make-up artist spokesman. He has also featured in magazines including Vogue and Grazia, on Channel 4's How to Look Good Naked, Channel 5’s Celebrity Super Spa and ITV’s This Morning. “As well as training our own girls in skincare and make-up and offering makeovers himself, he has curated the beauty department, so we have the most fantastic brands including Benefit, Inika and Make-Up Atelier Paris,” said Deborah. Premium fragrances, specialist skincare, gorgeous menswear and the most fabulous homeware complete Sandersons’ retail offering. When you can shop no longer, you’re invited to take a seat in Sandersons’ beautiful Yorkshire Tea Rooms. Taking the role of manager is Lisa Fox, who lives in the area and has worked in retail for over 15 years. “We interviewed several people for the position but Lisa was the stand-out candidate by a country mile,” enthused Deborah. “Like us, Lisa is all about exceptional customer service and she is also very much a part of the local community so it’s the perfect fit.” Don’t miss the Sandersons golden ticket opening at 11am on 1 September, when the first 100 customers will receive a fabulous free gift and one lucky shopper will walk away with a £500 Sandersons gift card. www.foxvalleysheffield.co.uk

COMPLETE KITCHEN & BEDROOM SOLUTIONS
Fitted in S35, June 2016
From a replacement worktop to a whole new kitchen or bedroom, there’s no job too small for CKB. aving traded out of Middlewood Road for over six years now, the Sheffield public are becoming well aware of the high quality, bespoke service on offer at Complete Kitchens and Bedroom Solutions. Owned by Scott Webster, CKB offer a complete kitchen and bedroom service alongside the capability of anything from removing walls to building extensions. Scott said: “When you come to us you really do get everything. Building work, electrics, plastering, decoration, fitting, flooring – this is a one-stop-shop.” But just because Scott and his team can perform complete renovations, that doesn’t mean that they have to. CKB understand that not everybody can afford top to bottom renovations at this moment in time so are more than happy to work on anything from replacing a single kitchen unit upwards. “I can do eight metres of worktop and a new sink and tap for £950 or a whole kitchen or bedroom – so people can have whatever they can budget for,” said Scott. “And if you have your own electrician or plumber that you would like to use then you are more than welcome to do so. We

will do as little or as much as you wish.” A feature of CKB which sets it apart from many of its competitors is that it manufactures everything on site, giving it a bespoke service. This means it can cater to any needs or desires. Scott employs a close team of dedicated workers including a registered electrician, and plumber, as well as qualified plasterer, brick layers and window fitters, who are all contracted to CKB. Gloss doors particularly in white and cream are in vogue at the current time. This gives a room a fresh appearance and Scott has seen requests for this design boom. Consequently Scott is offering deals on an Astro white and cream gloss – check in at the showroom or give him a call for more deals. Scott doesn’t believe in such gimmicks as offering customers ten per cent off their total bill though. “These are often used to pull the wool over people’s eyes. I offer competitive prices from the word go.” Should you contact CKB, Scott will come out to view your home for a free appointment. The visit normally lasts for an hour depending on job size. “I don’t give
quotes off-the-cuff. I am meticulous when it comes to pricing, so post-appointment I will go through everything and provide an accurate, itemised and fair quote.” Scott is the initial point of contact for customers and he not only designs his work but does the fitting too. Once Scott has committed to a job he dedicates all his time to it from inception to completion. He guarantees that he will not be working on multiple projects at one time and is even willing to turn down work to be able to do this. “My customers like to know that I will always be there and that they have my undivided attention. That is the least they deserve and will get when they come to me.” As such his customers can contact him 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Doors and worktops are guaranteed for a decade but for extra peace of mind Scott ensures that payment comes in instalments and that the full fee is not paid until the job has been completed satisfactorily. For a company that will provide your home with undivided, specialist and bespoke attention, give CKB a call today!

Lasting Power of Attorney: the myth and the reality.
You need to take advice if…
any people have heard of a lasting power of attorney (previously an Enduring Power of Attorney), but they associate it with something you arrange later in life when you “start feeling iffy”. Here we will investigate some of the myths and realities surrounding mental incapacity and Lasting Power of Attorney.
M
MYTH: Mental incapacity is something that only affects people in later life through illnesses such as Alzheimer’s, so I don’t need to do anything just yet. REALITY: Accident or illness can strike at any time, often without warning. The consequences of failing to plan can be significant, as outlined in this article. Why leave something so important to chance?
• You or your spouse/partner don’t yet have a Will.
MYTH: If I suffer an accident or illness, my spouse or children will automatically be able to take over the running of my affairs as my next of kin. REALITY: Your spouse or children have no automatic right to act on your behalf. Without a Lasting Power of Attorney, they will be required to apply to the Court of Protection to be appointed as your Deputy – a long, complex, costly and intrusive process.
• You have a Will but it leaves everything to your spouse/partner. • You don’t have both kinds of Lasting Powers of Attorney set up.
MYTH: I can simply add my spouse or children to my bank accounts, as a joint account holder would just carry on as normal in the event of my mental incapacity. REALITY: Banks are guided by the British Bankers’ Association to freeze both solely and jointly held accounts where one account holder loses mental capacity (they may allow pre-authorised payments).
• You or your spouse/partner don’t have a pre-paid Funeral Plan. • You are divorced or widowed. • You have children.
MYTH: When creating a Lasting Power of Attorney, it’s best to appoint my spouse and children to act together jointly. REALITY: Many poorly advised individuals have fallen into this trap. Appointing family jointly means they must act together in all matters, rendering the Lasting Power of Attorney useless when one of the appointed family can’t act – incapacity or death is not an excuse!
• You are concerned about what will happen and covering the costs if you need long term residential care.
MYTH: If anything happens to me and a decision needs to be made about life sustaining treatment, the doctor will automatically follow the wishes of my next of kin. REALITY: Only through a Lasting Power of Attorney can you give the people you trust the right to make choices about your health and welfare, including the ability to refuse lifesustaining treatment if you wish. A Lasting Power of Attorney is often likened to an insurance policy – you hope you’ll never need it, but your family will be very grateful for your foresight if you do. It’s the only way to have your say about who you trust to manage your affairs and make things as simple as possible for your loved ones.

TRAVEL
Pictures: Berlin Tourismus & Kongress GmbH (visitBerlin)
Capital gains BERLIN, A CITY WHERE A FRACTURED PAST MEETS AN EXCITING FUTURE, IS AN INTRIGUING WEEKEND BREAK DESTINATION FOR MOLLY McGREEVY. n Berlin, lunch comes with panoramic views of the Brandenburg Gate, TV tower, rolling acres of Tiergarten Park and the historical hub of Museum Island. From its vantage point on top of one of the most important buildings in the city, the Käfer Dachgarten serves Berlin classics alongside delicious vegan and vegetarian options; and is the perfect starting point for a weekend break in Berlin. After an aerial view, the best way to see the city is on two wheels, with a Berliner leading the way. With a population so passionate about remembering the past, whilst forging a forward-thinking future, choosing a tour without a native at the helm would be a waste. Our tour of the Berlin Wall with Berlin on Bike saw us peddling, albeit with a wobble at times, around the city with our tour guide, Sascha, who was in his teens when the wall came down. He told us about his own family and their stories of prison time and smuggling lovers across the divide, a reminder that for Berliners the wall has an ongoing impact on their lives, and is not just an attraction for tourists. Our ride took us to the Berlin Wall Memorial, home to the only remaining section of both sides of the wall, including the death strip and watch tower. The true horror of the wall is not revealed until you
I
climb the stairs to the memorial museum’s viewing platform. From there you can see the terrifying measures taken to keep the city apart, from the rounded tops of the two walls to the watch tower spotlights. For those who prefer their feet to the saddle, the city is easy to navigate on foot, the terrain is flat and efficient transport links make hopping on and off at popular tourist spots a breeze. A good starting point for a walking tour is The Gate, which is just 50M from Berlin’s most famous landmark, the Brandenburg Gate. Emotive and enthralling, The Gate takes visitors on a 20 minute time travel through 300 years of Berlin history using old film clips, soundscapes from the city’s streets and news footage shown on 71sq meters of HD screens using a 36 channel sound system. The Weinmeister Hotel is just a couple of minutes from the famous Alexanderplatz square, but it’s not only the hotel’s central location that makes it so appealing, but it is also the amazing design and artwork throughout. In Berlin, creativity and culture is never far. Steeped in turbulent history, Germany’s capital has had to continually adapt, change and reinvent its image to overcome destructive, divisive events. Today the city is a hotspot for young, progressive, creatives, who learn from the city’s divided and fractured past to create a united, liberal future. @SixerRMC
The Brandenburg Gate (below) is perhaps Berlin’s most famous landmark and is well worth a visit

Medal of honour
KATHLEEN MAY WAS ONE OF 400 ‘WOMEN OF STEEL’ COMMEMORATED EARLIER THIS YEAR. MOLLY McGREEVY CAUGHT UP WITH THE 95-YEAR-OLD AS SHE RECALLS LONG DAYS, HARD NIGHTS AND THAT ‘BLITZ SPIRIT’ THAT KEPT EVERYONE GOING. “
hey had to put on a good spread, all the big wigs were there, they couldn’t put on rubbish could they?” The big wigs 95-year-old Kathleen May is referring to are Sheffield’s Lord and Lady Mayoress, the Lord Lieutenant of South Yorkshire and other dignitaries from the region, but it was Kathleen who was a guest of honour at the unveiling of Sheffield’s wartime Women of Steel statue. Two-thousand people showed up to show their gratitude for Kathleen and the women of steel, who finally received the recognition they deserved for manning the city’s steelworks and factories during World War Two (WW2). “Barker’s Pool was one mass of people right up to John Lewis. I didn’t expect it to be like that,” said Kathleen. “I thought they should have had it ten years earlier when more could have gone, I was shocked at how many people turned up, 94 of us were able to go. Everything was spot on, the Lady Mayoress gave me my medal.” The medals, made by the Sheffield Assay Office, have been engraved with ‘With thanks to our wartime Women of Steel from the people of Sheffield’, and have been awarded to 400 women or their families, to honour their work during the war. Alongside the medals, a statue by Martin Jennings was dedicated to the hundreds of female workers who kept the city going whilst the men were away. The £170,000 raised for the Women of Steel came from a public appeal launched by the Sheffield City Council. “It’s the only medal I’ll ever get,” said Kathleen, who is modest about her accolade, “I’m one of the lucky ones, I’ve lived long enough to remember it and to see this.” It’s been more than 70 years since WW2 ended and the women left the factories to return to their day jobs, which for Kathleen was working for top class soft furnishing firms in the city. Born in Walkley, Kathleen
T
was a premature baby, and has been a fighter since day one. “My mother went to her sister’s to have me because my godmother was a farmer, she was used to delivering calves so was okay to deliver me. I was only five pound three.” Educated at Stannington School, Kathleen did not receive a secondary education, there wasn’t a bus service to her nearest grammar or secondary school. “I didn’t sit the exam because my mother said there was no point to it, she wouldn’t let me walk to Middlewood or the city grammar, so I haven’t had that education.” Instead, Kathleen began an apprenticeship with Johnson and Appleyard’s, one of the city’s most prestigious firms, who produced cabinets and house furnishings for Sheffield’s high society, as well as being an agent for Liberty of London. There she learnt her trade of soft furnishings, and soon became a highly-skilled upholsterer, working in the region’s most elite homes and offices. But aged 20, a year after the war broke out, Kathleen, along with hundreds of other women, was called up to work in the factories and was employed by Chesterman’s, who made steel rulers for armed forces. For Kathleen, her new surroundings were familiar: “I worked at the old corn mill at Rivelin where my grandfather used to work, I spent hours in there as a kid and then I went to work there.” At Chesterman’s Kathleen worked on the smallest increments on the steel rulers, a task she thinks she was allocated because of her experience with intricate sewing work. “I did the fine work on the machine, it ruined my eyes. I turned out steel rulers for the army, navy and air force. They all had different ones. I didn’t get to do any easy ones, the machine I worked on was all the finer, most difficult ones.” > @SixerRMC

INTERVIEW
The commemorative medals awarded to 400 women or their families, to honour their work during the war Picture courtesy Sheffield Assay Office
It was all women on the factory floor, the only men were engineers who were too old to go to war who fixed the machines, and the bin men, who came on Thursdays. Women came from all over Sheffield to work for Chesterman’s and Kathleen found herself working alongside girls from the city, who weren’t used to the perils of country life. “You had to be careful what you told the girls from the city,” chuckled Kathleen. “I knew water rats could come up and bite your bum, I didn’t tell them, I kept it quiet because I didn’t want to scare them. You had to be careful what you told them because they were city girls and they weren’t used to it.” As well as facing the dangers of the local wildlife, the women of steel faced relentless hours and meagre wages, conditions worsened as the war continued. “We were on days at first from 7.15am until 7.15pm, then we went on nights and days. They were long hours and it was terrible pay, thankfully people don’t have to do it now.” Despite the conditions, the Blitz spirit kept the girls going, something Kathleen doesn’t know would happen in today’s modern world. “I wouldn’t want to think that your generation has to do what we had to do, it was hard, but the comradeship was better. It wasn’t like what it is today, you know, dog eat dog. People mixed together and helped each 28 Sixer | www.sheffieldvibe.com
other more, which was better. Nowadays it’s every man for themselves. “It’s not nice to think that war could be better but in some ways it was, you know, the kindness of people, they were nice to each other. They’re not now, it’s too much of a rat race.” Once the war ended, the men returned and the women went back to their day jobs but Johnson and Appleyard’s had been blitzed, so Kathleen went to work for Cockayne’s, where she once again found herself amongst city’s upper classes. Her work took her to Chatsworth, the Lord Mayor’s parlour and the residences of Sheffield’s high society. “Cockayne’s did the best kind of work. When the Queen came to Sheffield, I was in my twenties just after the war, I did all the
main sewing and work for the Lady Mayor’s parlour. “I did a lot of work at Chatsworth before John F Kennedy came, I’ve been to Chatsworth a lot, it’s beautiful.” Kathleen’s career then took her to John Lewis, and into clerical work, before a welldeserved retirement spent enjoying her days doing the things she loves most – writing poems – and dancing in her kitchen…at 95 she can still shimmy and shake. After all she and the other women of steel have done for the city, Kathleen is still humble about the contributions and personal sacrifices she has made for Sheffield. “You didn’t get much free time, it was hard, but I’ve lived to tell the tale. I didn’t expect to get a medal, it’s nice. “You would do it if you had to, we had to.”

PROFILE
Striking out for bigger things BETH GABBITAS DREAMS OF THE BIG STAGE – AND IS WELL ON HER WAY TO ACHIEVING HER AMBITIONS. eep an ear out for the latest rising star on the Sheffield music scene... and grab the opportunity to see her performing locally before she strikes out for bigger stages. Beth Gabbitas is becoming a familiar fixture and winning lots of admirers for her stunning live performances at venues such as the Wortley Arms, Baldwins Omega and the Bridge Inn. This talented 18-year-old is studying for her Performing Arts triple BTEC, having already completed an A-level in drama last year. Next step on the rapid learning curve for Beth will hopefully be a move to the Guildford School of Acting in September 2017 to study musical theatre. Beth went to Guildhall summer school last year for an acting workshop, and this summer she will be at Guildford School of Acting for a musical theatre workshop.
K
Passionate about music and acting, these are all significant steps on the way to what Beth hopes will be a career on the West End stage. Beth has been performing since the age of seven via Stage Coach Sheffield, Take 2 Birdwell and 412 Productions Pontefract, alongside various school and college productions. She says: “I love how the art of theatre evokes emotion in other people – it is an amazing thing to be able to do.” Meanwhile her performances on local stages have increased Beth’s passion for singing live in front of an audience. “With an intimate gig, it’s so great to be able to see the reaction from the audience up close.” Having expanded her repertoire by singing at weddings, Beth is finding herself increasingly in demand as brides-to-be request her to sing them down the aisle, with bookings stretching into the next two years.
As well as loving musicals (taking the role of Eponine in Les Miserables would be her dream) Beth also derives inspiration from modern music icons such as Adele and Amy Winehouse, and her powerful voice is well suited to anything from soul and ballads to songs from the musicals and rock numbers from the likes of Queen. Meanwhile Beth is doing her bit for the charity Young Minds by having her hair shaved off on Monday 29 August (6pm). She believes strongly that teenage depression is on the rise and needs to be in the spotlight. BARNFIELD HOUSE AIMS TO ADD TO ITS HAUL OF AWARDS BY LANDING ONE OF THE REGION’S TOP TOURISM HONOURS.
Pride of Yorkshire arnfield House, Sheffield’s only four star gold award guest accommodation, has been named as a finalist in the guest accommodation category of the White Rose Awards. The White Rose Awards, which are run by Welcome to Yorkshire, honour the very best of Yorkshire tourism, and Barnfield House, at Loxley, has fought off competition from around the region to be named as one of six finalists in the guest accommodation category. Owners Helen and Michael Rogers are thrilled about their nomination, which is the latest in a string of awards and accolades that Barnfield House has achieved since the B&B opened in 2007. Soon after it opened Barnfield House was awarded a four star silver rating by Visit England, which was followed by a breakfast award and finally the four star gold award, making it the only B&B in South Yorkshire to receive such a high accolade. To be recognised by Welcome to Yorkshire means a lot to co-owner Helen Rogers. She said: “Both Michael and I are Yorkshire born and bred, we are incredibly passionate about Yorkshire and what the county has to offer visitors.” Reaching this level has been a long process, starting with a written application and supporting evidence, explaining why Barnfield House was one of Yorkshire’s best guest accommodations. Helen and Michael worked tirelessly on the application, spending every spare moment on it when they weren’t busy with the B&B, and are now expecting a mystery guest as part of the judging process. But the couple are no strangers to working hard to make Barnfield House a success. When they bought the house ten years ago it had previously been used as a rest home and
B
contained 22 small rooms, which had lain empty for two years. The house underwent a full refurbishment and today Barnfield House is home to six beautiful bedrooms, a bright dining room and an acre of beautiful grounds, all with panoramic views of Loxley Valley, Dam Flask, Strines Moor and surrounding farmland. Guests’ rooms are loosely themed around local folklore legend Robin of Loxley, or Robin Hood, as he is more famously known. For guests staying at Barnfield House, the best of Yorkshire is on offer as the couple try to support as many local businesses as they can. The meat used in the B&B’s award-winning breakfasts comes from John Crawshaw’s butchers, whilst the art on the walls was provided by Sheffield artist Mark Turner, and every year Barnfield House is the official artist accommodation for the Bradfield Music Festival. The guesthouse also has a recommendations book full of the best restaurants in the area, promoting Sheffield’s eateries and offering their customers the finest dining the region has to offer. Helen and Michael will have to wait until November to find out if Barnfield House has been successful, when the winners will be announced at a glittering awards ceremony which has been likened to the Oscars of the Yorkshire tourism industry. Glorious Goodwood
MALIN MOTOR BODIES’ TONY SHIRTCLIFFE WILL BE STEPPING BACK IN TIME TO ACHIEVE A LONG-HELD AMBITION AT ONE OF THE COUNTRY’S CLASSIC RACING TRACKS. o doubt about it, the Goodwood Revival is one of the best motorsport events anywhere in the world. Returning to the spiritual home of British motor racing, it is a celebration of flatout wheel-to-wheel racing, around the sweeps and curves of the classic Goodwood circuit, which remains unchanged since its heyday. This September, by invitation of Lord Freddie March, Tony Shirtcliffe of Malin Motor Bodies will roll a pretty special machine out of his racing trailer and onto the Sussex circuit: a period orange Austin A35, aptly nicknamed the Flying Satsuma. We’ve already seen the car in action at Brands Hatch, Castle Combe and Oulton Park, and now it’s time for the Austin to face its St. Mary’s Trophy debut. “I am hugely grateful to Lord March,” said Tony, who will turn 65 this month. “This is a once in a lifetime opportunity and I am absolutely delighted to have been picked. Taking part in this race was a big personal ambition.” Goodwood aims to recreate the circuit’s glory years, between 1948 and 1966, when Lord March deemed modern cars too fast for his track. As such, not only are the cars restricted to those that would have raced in
N
32 Sixer | www.sheffieldvibe.com
period at Goodwood, but every detail has been carefully designed to create a step back in time. “All the engines have to be bought from the same manufacturer and arrive as a sealed unit, so you cannot do any modifications. This makes the racing down to the drivers more than the car,” says Tony. Set to take on 30 mechanically identical Austin A35s, Tony and celebrity teamster, exFormula One Ferrari and McClaren driver Gerhard Berger, will share the driving duties alongside a prestigious roll call of motoracing stars including ex-Touring Car champion Tony Jardine. For Tony it all started in late 2013 when he read an article in Octane magazine regarding a new race series for the pre-1960 Austin A35, introduced by the Historic Racing Drivers Club (HRDC), which inspired him to purchase his own A35 and restore it at the family business he set up in 1989. In the flesh, the car is eye-poppingly pretty, while a poke around the interior reveals a crazy level of attention to detail. So what goes into restoring a car like the Austin A35? “We went into Lincolnshire to collect it, and it was in a dilapidated condition,” says @SixerRMC
Tony. “It was stripped down in our workshop and taken to Nottingham to be dipped to remove all the old paint and rust, it came back like a lace curtain. We then manufactured panels and used fibre glass wings, bonnet and boot lid, to reduce the weight.” And so the Revival exists with a certain amount of assumed risk. YouTube and TV coverage show a cutthroat, drifty street fight that makes contemporary motorsport seem stuffy. With visitors encouraged to wear vintage outfits – and 99 per cent do in order to add to the atmosphere – the result is a truly memorable racing weekend that has helped Goodwood become more than just a renaissance fair for car people. “It’s going to be a great big party,“ says Tony’s wife Jayne, who will accompany him on the weekend. “I think it will be a real hoot. We’re looking forward to getting the show on the road.” Malin Motor Bodies Unit 1/Limestone Cottage Lane Sheffield, S6 1NJ Tel: 0114 233 0304 www.malinmotorbodiessheffield.co.uk

BAKEWELL SHOW
‘Something everyone should witness’ SHEFFIELD’S STEVE FLEWITT HAS BEEN INVOLVED WITH BAKEWELL SHOW FOR 30 YEARS. NOW CHIEF STEWARD OF THE HEAVY HORSE SECTION, HE CLAIMS HIS LOVE FOR THE ROLE EVEN HELPED HIM TO STAY POSITIVE THROUGH CHEMOTHERAPY. teve Flewitt was born, bred and still lives in Stannington. Steve, now 74, left school at 15 – the same time his father sadly died – and as the oldest male sibling in his family he took on the responsibility of running the family farm. “That’s when my love of shire horses started,” say Steve. “When I first started working at the farm we didn’t have a tractor to do the work, just a pair of shires. My love for and interest in them began there and continued.” Steve has always been around Bakewell Show and first began visiting as a child with his father, who used to show animals there. 2016’s show saw Steve’s 31st year of involvement. He said: “My Bakewell Show involvement began through a guy called Bill Salt. He was chief steward of the Heavy Horse section at the time and a well-known local farmer and horse breeder. “I helped with judging on the panel one year and at the end of it he turned round and told me that next year I was taking over!” The Show was a one-day event at the time and one judge had to cover every class and entrant. Steve continued: “It was my first year being in charge and it was a lot for one person to judge. I remember time was getting on and that year’s judge, a Mr White, hadn’t had lunch. “I told him there was one horse he’d
S
48 Sixer | www.sheffieldvibe.com
forgotten to judge and they had to send the horse back out. When the aftermath came I got a real rollocking for taking up too much time and delaying the Grand Parade in centre ring. “So I said I’d only stay on in the role if I got to do things my way and have two judges. That was 30 years ago!” Steve has since developed the section and it has one of the best turnouts of any country show in England. Judges now number three, with the Show having become a two-day event. He initially grew the section thanks to involvement from Tetleys in Leeds, who he went to work for after finishing in farming, which is where he credits as the place he got into Heavy Horse turnouts. He said: “The first time they put Bakewell Show to two days I got Tetleys to come and do a demo and brought two teams. “One of other lads and I had a pair of drays with barrels and things on and the other lads had a best in show dray. We wrote a piece for the commentator to talk about it and that’s how we got it going with teams. We’re up to about 60 stables now.” Another reason Steve credits for the Show’s strong turnouts is his commitment to studying judges to try and pick professional ones that will help the Show and bring people in. He also alternates judges’ specialities each year for fairness. The only time Steve has missed a show in @SixerRMC
the last three decades was six years ago, when he underwent chemotherapy treatment for lymphoma. “I’m in remission now,” says Steve, “and to be honest I think my involvement with Bakewell Show kept me going through the treatment. “I even had my mobile phone next to me in hospital to keep checking on the team I had in place to make sure they’d done everything. One of them eventually had to tell me, in no uncertain terms, to get lost and leave them to it, to put it politely! “Having all that to think about got me through though and kept me focused and positive.” For anyone who hasn’t experienced Heavy Horse classes at Bakewell Show, Steve believes it’s something everyone should witness. “I obviously think they’re the best, but when people showing turn those horses out clean, washed and polished it’s amazing. They’re a tonne apiece, but so graceful. You see these team classes with four horses going round in sequences and it’s like they’re dancing.” Steve was the Vice President of Bakewell Show this year, having been invited by the Show’s board of directors. “I was shocked to be asked!” he says modestly, “I’m the type of guy who does my job, sits in the corner and gets on with it with a bit of Yorkshire grit!”

MOTORING
New Volvos hit the spot For those seeking a more sporting and expensive edge to their everyday family runabout, the R-Design models in Volvo’s line-up really hit the spot. And with the release of the all-new S90 saloon and V90 estate, Volvo has once again applied the Rdesign treatment. Sporting a new front-end design with spoilerintegrated fog lights, unique grill with piano black trim on both the front and rear of the car, new five-spoke matt black diamond-cut wheels and a more performance-orientated chassis, not only should the S90/V90 look the part but it should drive the part to. There are unique touches on the inside to which should improve the experience over standard models such as unique deco trim and sporty contour seats. Prices to be unveiled shortly.
FROM HIGH PERFORMANCE TO FAMILY PRACTICALITY, JORDAN CUTFORTH LOOKS AT THE CARS HITTING ROADS SOON.
King of the track? New Mondeo ST
Rugged good looks
Ever wanted a sporty Ford Mondeo? Well, if so, you’d have to rewind all the way back to 2002 with the ST220 which had a very exciting – and thirsty – V6 petrol bomb under the hood. Today, the ST name makes a comeback onto the brand’s family wagon range after a 14year absence. It’s called the STLine, but unlike the usual ST nut jobs that escape from the Ford skunkworks division, which come packing powerful petrol engines, this one comes with two 2.0-litre diesel options in 148 and 178hp flavours. Other additions to the STLine include sport suspension and body styling, unique alloy wheel designs and sport seats, perforated leather steering wheel and alloy pedals for the interior. Available in five-door or estate body styles.
Mercedes-Benz has finally announced pricing and specifications for their new GLC Coupe SUV. Starting at £40,580, the GLC Coupe from launch will be available with a 2.1-litre diesel with either 170 (GLC 220d) or 204hp (GLC 250d). Both produce 56.5mpg on the combined cycle and emit 131g/km of CO2. A nine-speed automatic comes as standard. Standard equipment includes Garmin Map Pilot navigation system, Active Park Assist, Artico upholstery in black or beige. keyless start, reversing camera, LED performance head lights, heated front seats, sports suspension, electrically operated tail gate and mirrors. There’s a host of optional equipment available for this car, including the AMG Line, the Premium and Premium Plus packages and the Driving Assist Package. First UK deliveries will arrive in September.
@SixerRMC
Revealed at this years’ Goodwood Festival of Speed, the Mercedes AMG GT R is the latest German skunkworks escapee to take a headlong on challenge in dethroning the Porsche 911 GT3 RS from the perch of ultimate track car weaponry. This AMG GT R is what the SLS Black Series was to the original SLS: it’s a meaner, more hardcore machine than the vehicle it’s based on. To achieve this madman lunacy, Mercedes has added a wider and more aggressive body kit, power increase to 577bhp and 516lb ft of torque, a quicker 0-62 sprint of 3.6 seconds, a higher 198mph top speed and a much louder exhaust. Prices yet to be confirmed but expect a hefty premium of over the AMG GT S’s £110,000 sticker price.

Tantalise the tastebuds THIS HIGH-CLASS HILLSBOROUGH INDIAN RESTAURANT BREAKS AWAY FROM TRADITION, WRITES CHRIS WILSON. ine dining restaurants that offer tasting menus are few and far between these days, and with relaxed eating being all the rage, you might have thought the very idea of bow-tied waiter donning white gloves to deliver food to tables gleaming with white tablecloths, candelabra and highly polished cutlery was a thing of the past. Think again. Those traditional values of service and painstaking attention to detail are alive and well and drawing an increasingly appreciative clientele to The Front Room in Hillsborough. It’s different, but the real twist in the tale is that this is an Indian restaurant. Manager Nadim Khan spent 15 years working in local restaurants, including the Ashoka on Eccclesall Road, before deciding to strike out for himself at a venue that has been home to a few restaurants over the years. Any links with past establishments have been well and truly severed, however. This is not just about changing the fixtures and fittings, there has been a complete makeover, with reconstruction work going down to the bare brickwork before the shell was completely rebuilt to Nadim’s precise image of what a high class Indian restaurant should look like. So you get gleaming white walls and ceilings with matching leather chairs, candlelight and dark wood floors, very posh

loos with Molton Brown soap in the dispensers, and a menu that aims to blend the best of traditional Indian cuisine with the contemporary trend for street food. Black dickie-bows, white shirts and black waistcoats and trousers give the front-ofhouse team (including Nadim, who is a very hands-on boss) a smart look to match the setting. We visited on a Tuesday evening expecting a quiet night but not a bit of it, the restaurant was buzzing. And while the main menu looked tempting, we could not resist the chance to try something new to the Front Room - a five-course tasting menu specially prepared to highlight the variety and skill on offer in the kitchen. We started with chatpata poppadoms, which were beautifully crisp and topped with crunchy salad, herbs, spices and home-made chilli sauce. Then came a trio of beautifully cooked and delicately seasoned dishes that you definitely would not find in your average high street Indian restaurant. There were large cubes of tandoori dill salmon, served on wooden skewers; chicken lollipops, coated in spices and delivered on the bone, and strips of supremely tender lamb boti. All the food looked very elegant, presented on stylish black plates, and lightly spiced spinach rolls with black and white sesame @SixerRMC
seeds proved to be just the thing to perk up the tastebuds ahead of the main course. The savoury element of this spectacular feast was concluded with a lamb shank, with generous hunks of meat falling off the bone into a lightly spicy curry sauce which was just crying out to be soaked up by the side order of freshly made chapattis. It sounds like a lot, but with no heavy breads or starchy sauces to bloat you up, desserts were still a welcome treat rather than a chore. Chocolate melt, with chocolate sauce and ice-cream, and carrot halva brought our meal to a memorably sweet conclusion. With service and presentation absolutely spot on, The Front Room feels like a very special home from home. Whatever floats your boat RELAX IN LUXURY. ENJOY A LEISURELY DRINK IN A WATERSIDE PUB. MAN THE ROPES AND BECOME PART OF THE CREW… PHOEBE SEYMOUR SETS SAIL ON A UNIQUE B&B.
‘
ith this kind of lifestyle, you can’t be in a hurry,” said Dave Neil as we sat on the back of a barge on a warm, albeit, cloudy day in Oxford. The plan was to head to Abingdon, a journey which usually takes around 35 minutes by car, but the best part of a day by boat. My partner and I were spending two nights on Art Deco, a unique B&B experience where you can stop off and see the sights along the River Thames. A few years ago, Dave and his wife, Joyce opened Temptation café in Hillsborough. The business was doing well, but the couple quickly realised that it was better suited to a younger pair of hands. During this time, Rosemary, landlady of the pub where Dave and Joyce went on their first date, came into the café and told them how she was living on a boat at Victoria Quays, a stone throw away from the couple’s apartment in the Old Grain Warehouse. The seed had been planted and soon enough, they were getting in touch with Rosemary’s boat builder Tyler Wilson. What first struck me when boarding the boat, was how spacious it was. At 12ft, it’s wider than your average narrowboat, with high ceilings and plenty of windows making it spacious, well-ventilated and full of light. Though it is minimal, no amount of comfort has been spared. In the living room are two double leather sofas, a coffee table, a wood burner and a dining area, with double doors opening at the

as was the delicious chicken curry on our first evening aboard. Joyce does most of the cooking and is happy to accommodate any dietary requirements their guests may have. Guests can be as involved or uninvolved as they like in the running of the boat, so as we approached the locks, my partner and I decided we wanted to learn the ropes. As Dave secured the back end of the boat, Joyce showed us how to lasso the rope around a post at the front as the water lowered. Though it’s a slower pace of life, Dave and Joyce are always on the move. Three nights tends to be the maximum amount of time you can spend docked somewhere and charges usually apply after the first or second night. Dave and Joyce are happy to provide a bespoke service, so guests can be collected from most cities and towns along the Thames including Reading and Kingston. Hampton Court is just one tourist destination you can stop off at. My partner and I, however, were taking a more indulgent approach. We woke up in Abingdon and after a look around the abbey and Town Hall Museum, we sampled the delights of the Abingdon Food Festival from some of the best independent caterers in the area including The Oxfordshire Pizza Company and some refreshing gin cocktails from a 1960s VW van. With so many pubs along The Thames, you could quite easily arrange a bar crawl. That evening my partner and I joined Dave and

Joyce for a leisurely drink at a pub in Sandford. The next day we returned to Oxford for some sight-seeing around the ancient colleges and museums, before taking the train back to Sheffield. What I found refreshing, was Dave and Joyce’s attitude towards the business. “Our primary aim is not to make loads of money, but to inspire others to try out an alternative lifestyle,” said Dave. “The thing we love the most about living on the boat is the sense of freedom.” After three days of cruising down the river, checking out the sights and sounds of the canal and being well-fed and watered by our welcoming hosts, it’s fair to say I could get used to life in the slow lane. Oughtibridge teachers’ triple retirement
Wharncliffe pupils take part in Brazilian Dance The pupils at Wharncliffe Side Primary School may not be able to travel to Brazil to see the Olympic Games this summer, but that hasn’t stopped them from experiencing some South American culture. All of the pupils recently participated in a Brazilian Dance workshop. The children from Year 1 to 6 were given the opportunity to explore some of the many wonderful South American Latin dance styles including the famous salsa. It was a fun-filled, energetic day with pupils learning some choreographed moves, before putting on a performance at the end of the day. One pupil said: “It was like having a carnival in the school hall!” It was a great experience with the pupils truly immersing themselves in South American culture. The school lunch menu even featured chilli, tortillas and rainbow frittata.

It’s a new era at Oughtibridge Primary School as three teachers have retired. Headteacher Mrs Patricia Munt, deputy headteacher Miss Margaret Firth and senior teaching assistant Mrs Karen Cadman all left at the end of term. Staff, pupils, parents and governors gave all of the teachers a great send off. The children undertook the Great Oughtibridge Bake Off and invited parents, friends and colleagues to the school to wish Mrs Munt a long and happy retirement over a Morning Coffee or Afternoon Tea. The Y5 and Y6 children then lit up the stage with a flawless end of term performance of Goodbye My Friend, a fantastic feast of hilarious humour, divine dancing and awesome acting. Caretakers, Mr Sampson and Mr Pawson, almost stole the show with their portrayal of the Dynamic Duo Batman and Robin. Mrs Munt said: “I could not have asked for a more fitting final show. I have felt privileged to be part of the local community and to have enjoyed 12 happy years at Oughtibridge Primary School.” There was also a 1950s-themed goodbye from the staff and a special assembly for all the teachers on the last day of term. Miss Firth’s career has spanned 39 years and she has worked in a variety of Sheffield schools before teaching at Oughtibridge for 14 years. Mrs Cadman has given many years of dedicated service to the school, mainly working with the youngest children, where she has supported the teaching and learning practice of the school in an exemplary manner. All of the teachers will be greatly missed by everyone at the school and will be remembered with great fondness.
B & B nominated for top tourism award Sheffield’s only 4 Star Gold Award Guest Accommodation, Barnfield House in Loxley, is celebrating after being named as a finalist in the Guest Accommodation category of the White Rose Awards – which honours the very best of Yorkshire tourism. The awards aim to recognise the best of what the industry has to offer in Yorkshire, from the smallest B & B to hugely popular visitor attractions. Colin Mellors, chair of the White Rose Award judges, said: “Those shortlisted should feel very proud to have been selected against such strong competition. Choosing the eventual winners this year will be a really tough task.” It’s no surprise then that Barnfield @SixerRMC
House owners, Helen and Michael Rogers are so delighted to be nominated. Michael said: The White Rose Awards are the UK’s largest celebration of tourism – it’s like the “Oscars” of the industry and we are thrilled to be a finalist”. Helen added: “We are passionate about our business and promoting Sheffield and Yorkshire as a tourist destination – to win would be the ultimate accomplishment but the eventual winners will not be revealed until the night of the award ceremony.” Sir Gary Verity, Chief Executive of Welcome to Yorkshire, said: The White Rose Awards are a fitting tribute to Yorkshire’s fantastically diverse businesses that work tirelessly to help to make the county number one.”

Stannington resident Helen Hunter has set herself a personal target of walking over 2,500 miles in a calendar year in aid of raising funds for Cancer Research. Helen is a regular feature on the roads, pathways and byways around Stannington and further afield. She is walking an average of 15 miles a day and has made remarkable progress since her mid-January start. She celebrated reaching her 1,000th mile with the landlord of the Crown & Glove, whose regulars have provided much support and inspiration and has recently broke through the 2,000-mile barrier. Helen said: “I am an avid and passionate walker. Whilst walking I have the opportunity to reflect upon the personal losses of a child, parents, sister-in-law, wider family and close friends to a variety of cancer types, too many and far too early in life. “This target provides a clear focus and provides reason to continue walking whilst also hopefully raising some much needed funds to promote ongoing research to help others in the future avoid the loss and pain I have felt.”
