DO YOU REMEMBER?
ere’s a sight guaranteed to conjure up memories of scorching summers past. What could be more quintessentially English than village cricket, with a gorgeous rural setting and a smattering of spectators in deckchairs lining the boundary? If you recognise the setting or the occasion, please let us know. Last month’s photo showed the good folk of Bolstertone, all dressed up and ready to have a whale of a time at the village carnival of 1923. The ladies in the front row are (from left): Lilley Haigh, Nellie Cooke, Mrs. R. Shaw, Mrs T. Westhead, Nellie Rodgers, Mrs Dyson and Mrs Donkersley. The photo is taken from the book, The Archive Photographs Series: Around Stocksbridge, The Second Selection, compiled by Stocksbridge and District History Society.

Diamonds are forever… ZOE LEWIS, JEWELLER AND GEMMOLOGIST AT PA JEWELLERY, EXAMINES THE LASTING APPEAL OF ETERNITY RINGS. ustomers often ask us when they should buy an eternity ring for their partner. This isn’t a straightforward question to answer; there is not a single event strongly associated with an eternity ring, as there is with an engagement or wedding ring. They are most commonly purchased as an anniversary gift, often to celebrate a special anniversary such as the first, tenth or twentyfifth. Other popular reasons are the birth of a first child or a special birthday. For most it is the sentiment that is important, and the occasion provides an opportunity for renewing the expression of love that has already been made with the engagement and wedding rings. A complete band of gems makes the perfect symbol of love; reflecting the ancient belief in the circle as a symbol of eternity. Eternity rings themselves have been known since at least the eighteenth century, when they would often feature paste (glass) stones or a mixture of different gems. In the early decades of the twentieth century diamonds were becoming more available and consequently more commonly used in eternity rings. Synthetic spinel was also a popular choice, making use of the latest advances in the synthesis of gemstones to provide a more affordable option that imitated the appearance of diamond.
C
16 Sixer | www.sixermagazine.co.uk
In the 1960s DeBeers began to promote the idea of a diamond set eternity ring. It allowed DeBeers to target an older, married audience and also provided an opportunity to sell more of the smaller diamonds not suitable for solitaire engagement rings! The original slogan for this campaign was “She married you for richer or poorer. Let her know how it’s going”. This, and subsequent campaigns with similarly light-hearted slogans ensured the giving of an eternity ring soon became a tradition almost as universal as engagement and wedding rings. While eternity rings were traditionally a full band of gems it is now more common for a half-set band to be chosen. The principal reason for this is that it is a more practical style for regular wear since it is plain around the lower half of the band, making the ring easier to adjust in size and more comfortable to wear. The wide range of settings and styles available now also encourages great
variation in what is chosen as an eternity ring. For many people, it is important to find a design that complements their existing engagement and wedding rings, as the eternity ring is traditionally worn alongside them on the same finger. Diamond-set bands traditionally regarded as eternity rings are increasingly popular as wedding rings too. An eternity ring is still often added later, perhaps duplicating the wedding ring to form a complete set on the finger, or worn separately on the right hand, allowing for an expanded choice of style and size. Whatever the occasion, an eternity ring is a beautiful way to reaffirm your love and our experienced team of jewellers and gemmologists can guide you through the process and the range of options available.

Get the camping gear out and try a night under canvas
Beat the boredom STAYCATION TIPS – FUN THINGS TO DO WITHOUT TRAVELLING FAR FROM HOME. BY RACHEL MARTIN. o you want to have fun this summer, but you're not exactly swimming in money. Or maybe you've already blown your budget on a big trip and are looking for frugal things to do with the rest of your summer break. Try our list of inexpensive (or free) things to do when you're vacationing at home, guaranteed to cure your boredom.
S
Go for a bike ride There are thousands of miles of dedicated bike trails, including the Trans Pennine Trail, Southern Greenway to Rossington, the Northern Greenway to Adwick, the Woodfield Greenway to Balby-Edlington, White Rose Way, York Road, Wheatley Hall Road, Thorne Road and Armthorpe Road.
Go for a hike Walking is the best exercise, so pick a park or 20 Sixer | www.sixermagazine.co.uk
scenic area, plan a hike and explore. And don’t forget a picnic lunch and water; you don't have to spend tons of dough buying food, just grab some snacks from the pantry, an old blanket and enjoy getting back to nature.
Read a book You don’t have to be in a faraway place to settle down with a good summer read. Head to a local coffee house, splurge on a cappuccino and spend a few hours getting lost in a book.
Forage for food Even if you don't have a garden, there may be free food within your reach. Look online for foraging maps or ask friends if they know of any places to grab free fruit, berries, nuts, herbs and more (legally, of course). And then search for a recipe to experiment with your freefound food. @SixerRMC
Camp Have some camping supplies in a closet that barely get any use? You don't have to trek to a far-off wilderness location to have fun. Use your own backyard to pitch a tent, drag out a mattress and cook s'mores. No judging if you sneak back into the house to sleep the rest of the night.
Geocache Yes, it's still a thing. The old-school way to geocache involved a GPS unit, but now there are apps that make it easy to get started - you can sign up for a geocache account and go for a hunt. Not only is it free, you might even get something out of it if you find a particularly good treasure cache.
Reorganise This is probably not fun for everyone, but if you're one of the folks who absolutely loves making your home look fresh and new on the regular, spend a day wildly rearranging not just furniture and accessories, but whole rooms and art on the walls.

SIMPLE TIPS FOR A SMOOTH TRIP Travel is full of major decisions - like which country to visit and how much to spend. But beyond the big picture, it’s the little things that can make a trip easier and less stressful. Follow our simple tips to smooth the way on your next vacation. Pack essentials in your carry-on
Recent stats indicate that, on average, at least one bag on every flight is lost or delayed. If there’s anything you can’t live without, pack it in your carry-on. And you’ll get through airport security faster if you pack efficiently. Mark your bags with an easily recognizable item
The days of flower-pattern steamer trunks are long gone; now we all buy our bags at the same stores from the same manufacturers. The result: an endless stream of nearly identical bags on the baggage carousel. The solution: mark your bag by tying a colourful ribbon, stitching a patch or utilising a sticker. Remember your flight number
This may seem like a no-brainer, but knowing your flight number can make your life easier in small or foreign airports that do not list the full names of destination airports, or list by flight number alone. Save your boarding pass
Do you usually toss your boarding pass as soon as you step off the plane? You might want to reconsider. Your boarding pass can serve as proof of travel and can also be useful as a receipt for tax purposes, particularly if you’re selfemployed. Take old currency with you
Exchanging foreign currency after you’ve returned home is a hassle, so if you have any stray foreign currency laying around, take it with you the next time you cross international borders. Then, when you’re in need of local currency, you can exchange money from any other country.
At-home spa day If you don't have the dough to splurge on a day at a real spa, spend a little time transforming your bathroom into an at-home one you can pamper yourself in.
Know your hotel information
Learn how to make something from scratch Try learning how to make something from scratch - especially something you use a lot. It might require splurging a bit of money on supplies to start, but you'll soon save by making items instead of buying them.
Spend time with family People remember the good times spent with each other more than the places they’ve been. Get out a deck of cards or a board game and spend time talking, laughing and reminiscing.
Exercise Try Yoga, Pilates, boxercise, cross training etc. After all, summer offers warmer weather, more daylight and a greater chance that you can book time with a workout buddy.
Hit the snooze button Hey, vacations are to escape from daily life and relax. Catch up on some sleep. @SixerRMC
If a) your baggage is lost or delayed, b) you miss your connection and will be late checking in, or c) you are going to a destination you’ve never visited before, you’ll want to have complete contact information for your hotel on your person. Before you leave home, print out the hotel’s name, address and phone number, and program the latter into your phone. It’s also a good idea to print out a map of the hotel’s neighbourhood, whether for your own use or to show to a confused cab driver. Book travel insurance
While none of us want to think about things that could go wrong in the time between booking and jetting off - for example illness, bereavement or redundancy - taking out a policy could potentially save you thousands and offer you peace of mind. Sixer | www.sixermagazine.co.uk 21

WHEN A GIRLS FOOTBALL TEAM REACHED OUT FOR SUPPORT, A LOCAL TRAVEL AGENCY WAS ONLY TOO HAPPY TO LEND A HAND.
Kitted out heffield has always been at the forefront of modern football, dating back to when the first recorded rules were created here, way back in 1858. So it’s only fitting that the longoverdue trend for girls of school age to become more involved in the game is also gaining headway in the Steel City. Wisewood Under-12s are preparing for their second season in the Sheffield and Hallamshire Girls’ County League, and the last 12 months have been a breath of fresh air for team manager Andy Bryan. “Last summer it was all about getting enough players together to have a team,” he recalls. “When the season started we had 12 players and they really were in at the deep end with no friendly matches to prepare. “It was straight into league fixtures so, of course, they were losing and there were some quite heavy defeats. “But the enthusiasm never dropped and we encouraged them to just go out and enjoy it; then after Christmas something clicked, it was incredible. All of a sudden they were beating teams they had lost

heavily to at the start of the season... and that gave everyone a huge lift.” Having got through that baptism of fire the future looks bright, and Andy hopes there will be more interest and more girls teams at Wisewood (there are 20 boys teams) in the future. With a new season approaching for the Wisewood Girls there is much to look forward to. Home matches are played at the Ben Lane pitches just off Loxley Road, with training through the winter months at Goodwin Sports Centre. But despite all the positivity, finding resources can still be a struggle. That’s why the Wisewood Girls’ team is grateful to Worldchoice Travel in Broomhill for sponsorship. They have provided new training kit, hoodies and water bottles so the girls certainly look the part. “Worldchoice have been fantastic,” said Andy. “It’s made a big difference and at this level that sort of support is badly needed. The professional game might be awash with money but at grass roots level it’s all about volunteers, and every contribution helps.”

SUMMER OF FUN WE’VE ROUNDED UP THE BEST DAYS OUT IN YOUR LOCAL AREA FOR ALL THE FAMILY TO ENJOY.
Metrodome Leisure Complex Why visit the seaside, when it can come to you? Calypso Cove Waterpark is located within the Metrodome Leisure Complex and is home to fantastic flumes, sensational slides and wonderful waves - making it a great day out for the whole family. This month, Calypso Cove is launching a brand new toddler’s pool, the Barnacle Bay Splash Pool. The new pool completes the collection of pirate-themed features. Younger kids can climb the pirate ship and play with the water cannons, while big kids and grown-ups can race each other down the slides and sway in the beach-like main pool to the wave machine. And if you’re feeling peckish, pop to The Hideout at Calypso Cove. What’s more, their pools are available for lane swimming, swimming lessons and even scuba diving courses. The complex is also home to a bowling alley, the Rigby Café and Lounge and more. To find out more, visit www.bpl.org.uk/metrodome
WENTWORTH WOODHOUSE It’s going to be a summer for theatre-lovers at Wentworth Woodhouse. The Chapterhouse Theatre Company have already staged two performances on the lawn with the Rotherham stately home as its backdrop, and a third will be making its way to the venue on Thursday 30 August. An adaptation of Jane Austen’s Sense and Sensibility could not have a more fitting setting than Wentworth Woodhouse, the scene of many a soiree - and probably a romance or two - during Austen’s Georgian era. Adapted by award-winning writer Laura Turner, this exquisite and lively tale follows sisters, Elinor and Marianne Dashwood, as they fall in love, make mistakes and experience heartbreak for the first time in their quest to find a balance between sense and sensibility. The audience are welcome to bring low-backed chairs, rugs and picnics and to enjoy an outdoor bar in a family-friendly atmosphere. LEADING THE WAY AS ONE OF THE FACES OF A NEW NHS RECRUITMENT CAMPAIGN, NEWLY-QUALIFIED NURSE AISHA THABET IS HELPING TO INSPIRE MORE YOUNG PEOPLE TO JOIN THE CARING PROFESSIONS. isha Thabet, a 26-year-old nurse from Sheffield, has been chosen as an ambassador for a new national nursing and allied health profession recruitment campaign. Aisha, who works as an adult nurse in the A&E department of Northern General Hospital, is one of a team of newly-qualified student nurses and allied health professionals from across the country who have been recruited as ambassadors. They will spread the word about their professions, talk about their experiences and provide first-hand advice to those thinking about doing a nursing or AHP degree. The campaign, spearheaded by Health Education England, aims to encourage more students to study for degrees in nursing and the allied health professions. It will look to increase applications through clearing 2018 and ahead of the UCAS applications deadline in January 2019. Aisha said: “I’m really proud to have been chosen as an ambassador for this exciting new campaign. It’s vital that we inspire more young people who are choosing their future career paths to study these degrees and educate them on the huge range of

CHERIE LAWRENCE’S STORY Cherie became a mental health nurse after suffering post-natal depression as a teenager. Her career took off from there, and she isn't looking back. She has just started working at Sheffield’s Northern General Hospital. What made you decide to become a mental health nurse? “I became a mother unexpectedly at 17 and suffered from post-natal depression both during and after my pregnancy. Unfortunately at the time there wasn’t really that much information out there, and neither my family nor I really understood the condition. My doctor couldn’t offer much help, either. “To try and understand it better I did a community mental health course and discovered a passion for the subject. I found it really fascinating. “At school, like many teenagers, I didn’t really know what I wanted to do, but I had from quite a young age always admired nurses - after all, we trust our lives with them, and they’re the backbone of the NHS. “So when I discovered a passion for the subject of mental health, becoming a mental health nurse seemed like the obvious thing to do. I also felt like becoming a mental health nurse would help me be a really positive role model for my daughter.”
‘I’m really proud to have been chosen as an ambassador for this exciting new campaign. It’s vital that we inspire more young people who are choosing their future career paths to study these degrees and educate them on the huge range of opportunities that careers in nursing offer.’
opportunities that careers in nursing offer. “Not only does studying nursing make you highly employable, but in fact, I was offered a job before I’d even finished my degree, and it’s a hugely rewarding career. “As a nurse working in A&E, I get to make a real difference to people’s lives every day.” The campaign, which launched at the end of May and will run primarily across digital platforms, will put the spotlight on the benefits of these degrees and resulting careers, including a social purpose and the chance to make a difference to people’s lives, high graduate employment (94 per cent of graduate nurses find employment in a nursing job within six months of finishing their degree), the opportunity to work anywhere in the UK, and career development opportunities such as teaching, research and team leadership. For more information, visit: www.healthcareers.nhs.uk/knowaboutnursing
How did you become a mental health nurse? “I studied for my degree in mental health nursing at university, and was actually the first person in my family to go to university, which was a little scary, but I needn’t have worried as there’s so much support out there for nursing students. “I really enjoyed my degree and particularly the variety of placements I was given. I was able to get really valuable experience of working in hospital and community settings, with young people and old, including placements in forensics and working with people with functional dementia. “Nurses - particularly mental health nurses - are really in demand, so I was contacted about job opportunities all the way through my degree, and was offered a choice of four jobs when I graduated.”
“Being a nurse means that unlike quite a lot of other professions, you have a guaranteed job for life, which means I’m never going to have to worry about getting a job and providing for my daughter. “I think some people worry about the responsibility they’ll have once they’re doing the job for real, but the NHS runs an amazing preceptorship programme which helps bridge the gap between being a student nurse and a qualified nurse. They make sure you’re really supported, with regular group meetings and one to ones where you can discuss anything you need, and they make sure you have access to further training, such as safeguarding.” What is a typical working day like for you? “I get to work with a variety of people and importantly, no two days are the same. I go to work each day never knowing what to expect, which keeps things really interesting. “I work with a range of patients on the ward, some of whom are very vulnerable, and I work as part of a multi-disciplinary team, who are really supportive of each other. I think some people have a view that mental health nursing must be really tough, and whilst there are challenging times, there are also lots of lovely things that we get to do with patients as well, on a one-to-one basis, like taking them out for a walk or shopping in town. This helps give them back some normality and experience of life outside the ward.” What has been the highlight of your career so far? “I love my job, so it’s difficult to know where to start. I love the variety and how rewarding it is to see the difference we make to the lives of our patients. I also love that I have a guaranteed job for life - a lot of my friends are jealous.” What's next and what are your top tips for anyone thinking of a similar career? “I’ll be becoming a mentor in the next six months and hope to complete a masters in the next three years. I think it’s really important for students to understand how much support and help there is out there for newly qualified nurses, how varied the job is, and the opportunities that are out there for developing your career in the direction you want to, while continuing to learn new skills.” @SixerRMC

THINK PRINTS, PALM TREES AND PINEAPPLES... THIS SUMMER’S HOME TRENDS TAKE ON A CARIBBEAN TWIST. BY LUCY HAINSWORTH. his summer’s trend consists of ornaments bursting with botanical bliss and pineapple prints, to give this season’s home a tropical twist. You’ll find plenty of palm tree and banana leaf clad homeware on the high streets right now, which are sure to give any garden party a holiday vibe. Leaf prints add a touch of nature to artificial features in the home, with lampshades and bedding making you feel like you’ve woken up in the great outdoors. You may even find birds of
T
paradise sneaking their way into homeware, with tables and chairs growing bird’s legs. The pineapples add to this tropical sensation and are usually coupled with fierce gold to give this theme a sophisticated yet playful look. Metallics are always a winner, so reinforce these with some silver of gold wall hangings. With décor like this, your house will certainly stand out from the crowd and make your summer feel a lot more vibrant and stylish whether you’re inside your home and out in the garden.

BEAT THE AGEING PROCESS s the years pass, the tell-tale signs of ageing begin to show in the form of lines, wrinkles, pigmented lesions and loss of volume. But finding the time to treat ourselves and our skin can be hard. Maintaining a good, regular skincare routine and healthy lifestyle will all contribute to keeping skin healthy, but when a more intensive therapy is needed, The Retreat Laser Clinic offers a wide range of pioneering treatments to help you slow down the clock. In celebration of the clinic’s first anniversary, Kate Watson took clients old and new on a journey through all aspects of the Retreat, presenting some of the latest treatments available and exhibiting live treatment demonstrations, in order to eliminate any fears that the skin may suffer side effects. The Retreat Laser clinic offers medical grade treatments and skincare products - only available through specialised stockists - including Cynosure® and AlumierMD, which require little to no down time. So you can be assured you will not only see the very best results, but by using different wavelengths, depending on requirements, there’s something to suit everyone, with prices to suit a variety of budgets.
A
If you’re trying achieve fresh, healthy glowing skin that’s sure to turn heads at the pool, the Emerge fractional laser by Cynosure® provides non-ablative skin revitalization with little to no downtime, and is specifically designed for the treatment of pigmented lesions and mild to moderate wrinkles.
Throughout the summer, Emerge will be available to purchase at a discounted rate of £150 (RRP £200) for a full facial treatment. It’s very important to visit an experienced professional who will design a programme and prescribe the appropriate products for you. Kate qualified as a laser therapist in 2013 and worked in a busy clinic in Nottingham, undergoing training and gaining valuable experience with many different lasers and aesthetic procedures. After returning to Sheffield, she decided she would open her own laser clinic, providing a platform to share her expertise and begin offering pioneering treatments at competitive prices. A skin assessment is always recommended before any procedure and Kate welcomes clients old and new to visit the clinic for a free consolation. Whether it be unwanted facial hair, visible broken veins on either the face or legs, wanting to see an improvement in skin tone and texture, or blurring out wrinkles, there is always advice on hand.
With so much to offer you’ll need no excuse to visit The Retreat Laser Clinic and take some time to relax and rejuvenate this summer.

Glen Hardy
Share the secret
IT’S TIME TO START SPREADING THE WORD ABOUT YOUR NEW FAVOURITE SHOE SHOP – THE SECRET SHOE BOX. ssst… Pssst! Over here… Do you want in on a secret? You do? Right, well there’s a Secret Shoe Box in Sheffield! So secret is this shoe shop that it’s been hiding in plain sight, right under our noses, atop the legendary West Street cobblers, Cobblers and Keys for months now. The shop is, in fact, an extension of the renowned cobblers and sells high-end quality men’s footwear (the women’s range is soon to be expanded). It’s a proper shoe emporium and a definite paradise for any self-respecting coveter of ones and twos. There’s a chilled atmosphere in the intimate shop, which is decked out with a forties aesthetic, complete with an old school shoe
P
shining chair and a range of over 60 different styles from retail favourites Loakes and Barkers. So, now you’re in the know, but why the sudden urge to let the cat out of the bag? Well, Glen Hardy, a man with over 20 years’ experience selling shoes, is the answer. Glen has taken up a shoe consultancy position in the shop and has decided to put his foot down and bare his sole. “It’s about getting the word out and sharing the secret,” says Glen: “It’s got people talking and that’s what we’re trying to achieve, but we’ve got to make it work by letting people know we’re here. “We want to be a destination where people want to come to. It’s all about awareness and getting the word out there for now.” Glen is a Sheffield resident who worked as the manager of Jones Bootmaker, on Pinstone Street, for over 20 years,
before moving to Meadowhall and selling shoes there. Glen told us: “I worked for Jones Bootmaker for over 20 years so I do know footwear, but I also know the corporate side. The advantage we have is that we can react to a customer within days, and say, right, you want that we can get it for you. If you’re corporate you can only sell what you’ve got. “I was a customer here, and that’s the only reason I’m here. I was selling plastic ladies shoes in Meadowhall and I resigned. Initially I came for the afternoon, Nick (the owner) said come in and look at the ranges. I want to believe in what I’m selling and this is a product I believe in. And Glen is confident that the range in The Secret Shoe Box can’t be beaten. To test Glen’s theory head along to The Secret Shoe Box, on West Street, any day of the week. Glen also encourages people to get in touch via Facebook with requests and he will try to accommodate them. To sweeten the deal they are currently offering a ten per cent discount on shoes, and as a special incentive, if you mention your favourite Sheffield news source (that’s us!) you’ll get a further five per cent, which for the maths whizzes among us means a full 15 per cent off. There’s never been a better time to get that brogue you’ve been after. Secret Shoe Box 145 West Street, Sheffield S1 4EW Tel: 0114 273 7931

hey sat in the flickering candlelight, head in hands, studying their patient whose breathing laboured, hovering between life and death. They applied poultices, offered draughts of whisky and raw egg; sometimes Mother Nature cured the patient, sometimes she did not. The tough ones survived despite whatever the doctor could do. The poor ones could not afford the doctor in any case, so had even less chance of pulling through. I was fortunate to join the NHS in 1981, when I qualified from Sheffield Medical School, and I have witnessed first hand the plethora of changes taking place along my timeline, and continue to do so. Before the birth of the National Health Service, such was the life of the doctor who worked tirelessly, without break or respite, meeting face-to-face the raw illness which beset his patients but with little he could do about it. TB, cholera, smallpox, all took their toll in those early days. Then there came the beams of light which shone through the despair. Edward Jenner (1796) made his observations of milkmaids who contracted cowpox, which protected against the related smallpox – hence his development of the vital smallpox vaccine. Joseph Lister developed the antiseptic carbolic acid (now known as phenol) to sterilise surgical instruments and to clean wounds. This saved women after childbirth and patients having operations from the consequences of infections. The first penicillin antibiotic, which started development in Sheffield with Howard Florey in the 1930s, saved many a young soldier in WW2 from death from the consequences of trench gangrene. These gems were set in a background of socio-political developments such as increasing employment and improved housing, itself vitally underpinned by safe sanitation. The Victorians gained an understanding that health flowed from a clean water supply to the population, made so by the dirty water being kept separate from it. Middens were replaced by flushing toilets, thanks to the tireless work of Thomas Crapper of London, and a proper sewerage system as developed by Joseph Bazalgette (1858). However, after two World Wars the deprivation and difficulty took their toll on the people, and they suffered many infections

such as pneumonia and TB, scarlet fever and influenza. Increasing poverty meant increasing diseases, especially in the very young and the very old. Aneurin Bevan, Minister for Health in the UK from 1945-51, had been involved in a medical ‘insurance’ system for employees of a small Welsh mining town, and along with William Beveridge’s welfare proposals of 1942, developed the idea of a national health service, free at the point of delivery. ‘Nye’ Bevan’s quote referring to the NHS is well known: “Illness is neither an indulgence for which people have to pay, nor an offence for which they should be penalised, but a misfortune, the cost of which should be shared by the community.” On 5 July 1948, the birth of a National Health Service was announced with flourish and ceremony and received with great joy and relief by the people, in a time of post-war hardship. Bevan saw health as a basic human right and paid for through taxation. The concept of the ‘General Practitioner’ was born in the mid-1960s with a specific contract – a doctor who had previously worked alone or in small groups, now had the benefit of a team as they took on vital staff such as receptionists and nurses. GPs were

The doctor’s role changed bit by bit over this time. ‘He’ was partially replaced by ‘she’ as more women were accepted for medical training (currently more than half of medical students are women in Sheffield for example), working less than full time in many cases. The GP would have modern guidance to follow, based on evidence provided by the National Institute of Clinical Excellence (NICE) from 1999. After qualifying as a doctor I had three years’ of GP training to complete, part of it in Barnsley District Hospital. I remember being called out one night in 1984 with the obstetric ‘flying squad’ to deliver a premature baby as an emergency at home, and our ambulance was held up by miners’ strikers. The ambulance was rocked about and stones thrown at the windows. Fortunately the baby survived. At the time I started out as a GP, 1 August 1985, at Walkley House Medical Centre, we had an excellent team of receptionists, nurses of different types, as well as five GPs. We have developed over this time, and won the Practice of the Year Award in November 2017 @SixerRMC

for teamwork. A few of those early staff still work with us, and the team has developed new skills as NHS changes demand. The doctor now looks upon the patient, the person in front of them, as a partner in the decision-making; that person often having consulted ‘Google’ first and possibly having his own fears and questions which need to be put in context. The doctor no longer is the father figure providing water-tight answers to all questions, but rather a point of information and advice, delivered on an individual basis for that specific person’s problems. Can this NHS be sustained in the face of increasingly sophisticated and expensive treatments and medical complexity as we all live longer? Now, almost half of people aged over 65 take five or more different drugs. There is evidence to show that people with several medical conditions are best served by a GP or practice of GPs who know them well and their team offers their different skills to support that person to maintain independence. The NHS needs to be able to sustain this type of care. I think the future of the NHS holds an increasing use of technology, more sophisticated treatments and drugs, further increases in preventive care and more of the services being delivered near the patient rather than in hospitals. However, it must not lose the patient-centredness of the early days, and care of the person. Dr Jenny Stephenson is a GP at Stannington Medical Centre, Sheffield 6. Copies of ‘The History of Walkley House Medical Centre – through the changing scenes of 144 years’ can be purchased for £5 from Walkley House or Stannington Medical Centres (0114 234 3561 / 234 7775) or from Beeches shop on South Road. WALK THIS WAY IT’S OFFICIAL – STOCKSBRIDGE IS A RAMBLER’S PARADISE. PHOEBE SEYMOUR FINDS OUT WHY. f you ask the average person where the best walks in Sheffield are, they will more than likely point to the Peak District to the south of the city. Yet to those living in north Sheffield, Stocksbridge and the surrounding areas have some of the most underrated walks in the UK. But now, the secret is finally out… Stocksbridge was recently named runner-up of The Ramblers’ Britain’s Best Walking Neighbourhood Award 2018 – missing out to winner Hastings by a whisker. The town was the only place in Yorkshire to be nominated and the publicity has put their walking trails firmly on the map – quite literally. Dave Pickergill is the secretary for Stocksbridge Walkers Are Welcome, a local group that encourages locals and visitors to walk in the area, by creating helpful instructions and maps for a variety of walking routes. “The basic idea is that we are a local town that has set itself up to be welcome to walkers,” explains Dave. “We are one of 150 Walkers Are Welcome groups across the country so are part of a bigger network. “Over the years, we’ve developed fairly detailed instructions for walks in the local area and put them on the website. We deliberately went for downloadable PDFs because walks change. “When we started, Fox Valley was a sort of desolation land and a

‘Ewden Valley is really nice. One could describe it as the Switzerland of Yorkshire! It’s got the trees, the water – not quite mountains – but hills.’ couple of walks went through it. It’s totally changed so we’ve had to tweak those walks. Then, when Fox Valley opened, we nipped down and rewrote them. So it’s pretty up to date.” When Stocksbridge Walkers Are Welcome started in 2011, the team had created a dozen walks. This quickly extended and now the group has 42 routes suitable for everyone from casual walkers, to regular walkers looking for a challenge. The routes are split into less than five miles, five to 10 – which take between two and three hours and are most people’s favourite – and over 10 miles. “We’ve covered most of the paths in Stocksbridge now and expanded our walks to Yorkshire Sculpture Park and there’s one in Wentworth in development.” What started out as a helpful website for locals, has rocketed in popularity. In its first year, the site had 100 visitors. Last year, it had just over 24,000 hits – not bad for a town that doesn’t consider itself a holiday destination. The success of Stocksbridge Walkers Are Welcome would not have been possible without the sponsorship of local businesses, the support of Stockbridge Council and Fox Valley, as well Pictures: Dave Pickersgill as events such as Tour De France, which drew hundreds of people to the finishing line at Fox Valley and gave the group an opportunity to do some flyering. Though Stocksbridge came second, their nomination for The Ramblers award has attracted plenty of attention from the media. Look North reporter, Tom Ingle recently came to meet Dave to find out what all the fuss was about, while a reporter from BBC Radio Sheffield saw Bolsterstone on a snowy day and called it “Narnia”. It also helps having a walking group to test the routes. Dave is a member of a U3A (The University of the Third Age) walking group, which his wife Mary has also convened for a number of years. U3A is
a company that encourages lifelong learning and taking part in various activities. There are at least 30 walking groups associated with U3A in Sheffield, and the North West group meets in the area every Thursday morning – the perfect chance to try out one of the new routes. And though Dave has been living in Stocksbridge for 30 years, he continues to be amazed by the beauty of his home town. “Ewden Valley is really nice. One could describe it as the Switzerland of Yorkshire! It’s got the trees, the water – not quite mountains – but hills. You can start at Deepcar, go through Tin Mill to Green Moor, down to the River Don to Huthwaite Tunnel, then back on the trail – that’s a nice six miles. The first 100 yards are industrial land, but as soon as you turn right after the railway bridge, you’re in the countryside.” But this contrast of industrial and natural landscapes is what makes Stocksbridge such a unique and interesting place to walk. “It’s really good,” agrees Dave. “You’ve got your urban bits, but you’ve also got a number of reasonably designed paths. “You can be in Sandersons in Fox Valley, then 10 minutes later, you’re half way up the hill and you can see the Peak District, then 20 minutes later you’re at Langsett. You’ve got your variation and you get your views because Stocksbridge is in the valley.” Finally, I ask Dave why he thinks promoting walking in Stocksbridge is so important. “Why I think it is important walking anywhere. It’s healthy because you’re out and about, it gives you things to do, it can be different everyday and it helps your wellbeing. “When you’re in a walking group, you’re seeing people on a regular basis, having conversations and sorting out each other’s problems. Simply put - it’s good for you.” Stocksbridge Walkers Are Welcome will be leading the Sheffield Walking Festival on 9 September (www.theoutdoorcity.co.uk/walkingfestival). What a weekend TRAMLINES TENTH ANNIVERSARY SPREADS FESTIVAL FEVER.
t was an extra special year for Tramlines, so it was only fitting that their tenth anniversary festival at Hillsborough Park went off with a bang. A Tramlines spokesperson said: “The 10th edition of Tramlines has been a huge success with up to 30,000 people attending over the weekend. The new site at Hillsborough Park has proved to be the perfect location for Sheffield’s much-loved festival.” The new arena at Hillsborough Park was the ideal location for all the family to enjoy. It included a main stage featuring huge acts including Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds, Stereophonics, Craig David and De La Soul, a Leadmill Stage featuring comedy and music curated by Jon McClure of Reverend and The Makers, as well as new area, Into The Trees,
I
which featured a whole host of activities for kids in the day, and a dancefloor for partygoers in the evening. Bands, organisers and attendees also showed their support for Tramlines organiser, Sarah Nulty, who sadly died just weeks before this year’s festival. Acts including Reverend and the Makers, Milburn, Universal Tree, Bang Bang Romeo, Everly Pregnant Brothers and many more all paid tribute to Sarah during their performances – many of which, wore t-shirts with the slogan ‘BeMoreNulty’ on the front, designed by local artist Tom J Newell. The ‘BeMoreNulty’ t-shirts are on sale via the Drop Dead website at www.dropdead.co, with all profits to be donated to Weston Park Cancer Charity. @SixerRMC

Did It My Way based at the Niagara, Sheffield 6, continue to pride themselves on keeping their costs low, and they are constantly striving to provide the best service, at a price people can afford. A funeral can be conducted with dignity, respect and love without having to spend a fortune, and their funerals are testament to this. Their straight-to-crematorium service currently stands at £1,820 and can be attended by close family members. There is no service but this allows mourners to say goodbye in a way that best suits them. This service will also be booked at the family’s convenience. Just because there is no service does not mean that the family’s wishes should not be honoured at a time which best suits them. I Did It My Way’s basic service is priced from £2,310 (cremation only), with no other

costs to pay. A colourful coffin depicting the client’s life, or something special about them, with the hearse and a limousine, is fullyinclusive from £3,060 (cremation only). The price remains the same for a wicker coffin, which also prove to be very popular. The pre-payment business is increasing daily; an increasing number of people are
planning ahead as death and dying are no longer regarded as taboo. Peace of mind for families at such a difficult time appears to be made much easier when their loved one has planned ahead. There are no worries with a prepaid funeral, and the price quoted now is what you will pay, regardless of the date it is needed. Steve and the team pride themselves on the level of service they offer, they believe in acting in their clients’ best interests at all times. For enquiries please phone 0114 327 4936.
