DO YOU REMEMBER?

Last month:

Do you remember? e thought Father Christmas was fully preoccupied with delivering presents to children around the world at this time of year, but he seems to have taken some time out from his busy schedule to spend a few moments brightening up a house party for the grown-ups somewhere in North Sheffield in a festive year at some time in the past. Can you shed any light on the matter?

W

Were you there? Was the man in the red suit in a jovial mood? Let us know. Last month’s photo, as many of you spotted, was a view of the Cock Inn taken from Langsett Road and supplied by our friend Barry Couldwell. Sixer reader Joe Castle tells us the picture was taken from the upstairs front bedroom of the butcher’s shop which stood at the corner of Church Street and Langsett Road North.

The end of an era

Family business: Julie Cade and Michael Bramall

BRAMALLS GOLD ROOM IS TO CLOSE AFTER 45 SPARKLING YEARS. ramalls Gold Room, a jewel in Sheffield’s shopping crown, is set to close for the final time this December after being a fixture in the Sheffield Sixer community for 45 years. The late Albert Bramall, a former market trader, established the Bramalls scrap metal business in 1947 and to this day his son, Michael, has been running the family jewellery business alongside his sister-in-law, Julie Cade. Albert, who had previously served in the RAF, was forced to retire from the market trade in 1947, as the result of a cruel winter, and opened Bramalls scrap metal business on Middlewood Road, before moving the company to a former B&B transport café on Herries Road South in 1964. It has remained in the Bramall family ever since, with Michael, who was born into the scrap metal business in 1949, taking over from his father and establishing Bramalls Gold Room in 1972. Michael joined Bramalls in 1966 at the age of 16, working in the scrap yard for seven years – then, due to an increasing interest from customers for gold krugerrands and sovereigns, he had a hankering to expand into the gold/jewellery trade. Alongside Julie, Michael started selling coin jewellery from a hand-designed cigar box and eventually expanded by opening a small shop at the back of his father’s scrap metal business, which immediately captured the imagination of the local community. At this time, no other jeweller existed in Sheffield selling top quality products at such competitive prices, and the business was an

Five years on, Michael expanded into the adjoining premises, the former Kitsons Transport Café, and fitted out the shop much as you see it today. Now 67, Michael has been contemplating retirement for the last few years, and was recently approached by a development company who wished to purchase their corner plot. “It was a difficult decision to make, but I’m 67 now,” says Michael. “So now seems the right time to retire and it is with a degree of sadness that I am closing Bramalls Gold Room. “To all our customers’ old and new, many of whom have become not only regulars but @SixerRMC

friends over the last 45 years, we sincerely thank you for your business. Your loyalty as a customer is greatly appreciated. It has been our privilege to serve you. “I wish everyone the best of luck for the future and extend sincere thanks to our staff past and present for their peerless performance. The years you have worked with us have been marked by unsurpassed efficiency and excellence. It has been a pleasure to work alongside you as part of the Bramalls family.” The Bramalls retirement sale will run until Christmas before shutting its doors for the final time on 24 December. A life full of memories FROM THE TERROR OF THE BLITZ TO HAPPY HOLIDAYS ON THE FAMILY CANAL BOAT, SIGNATURE LOXLEY PARK RESIDENT ENA HAS HAD A RICH AND VARIED LIFE. ood Friday in 1933 was a beautiful spring day, with the daffodils in bloom and the sun shining. There was a party going on in the village of Saxelby and Grimstone, near Melton Mowbray, with the entire village out celebrating the first baby born in 13 years. She was six weeks premature, weighed only three-and-a-half pounds and was called Ena Wright. Ena lived happily in the village for the early part of her childhood, before the family moved to a village outside Leicester when she was four. It was at nine that Ena witnessed one of the most momentous and horrific events of the Second World War. At the height of the Blitz, on the night of the 14th November 1940, over 400 Luftwaffe bombers attacked Coventry. Although the city was far away from her little village, the devastation filled the skies. “It’s always stuck in my memory. My dad and I stood in the garden and watched the skies, which were filled with terror. We turned on the news the next day and Coventry had completely gone.” When the war ended and normality returned, Ena was able to indulge her love of sport. As a teenager she represented her county in both rounders and netball. When she wasn’t on the sports field she spent a lot of time in her local church, which put on activities for youngsters in the village. “We would go nearly every day, playing games and performing in concerts. I used to play the piano and the room was filled with people singing and dancing.” After the war, village life was enriched by the arrival of an influx of Londoners looking to start a new life. The newcomers also added to the zip of the local church concerts. Ena’s school holidays were often spent with her beloved grandparents, either cockling on the coast of Norfolk or joining them at work.

G

“My grandmother worked in the kitchen at Holkham Hall for Lord Leicester and my grandpa looked after the gate; I used to visit in the school holidays and I even met Princess Margaret. AWARD-WINNING ESTATE AGENT SIMON BLYTH IS CELEBRATING THE SUCCESS OF ITS FOX VALLEY BRANCH BY BACKING AN APPEAL TO BRING CHRISTMAS CHEER TO LONELY ELDERLY PEOPLE.

Time to make a difference What they’ve been up to…

It’s been a fantastic first year for the Stocksbridge branch, which opened in June. Not only have they thrown themselves into a number of successful fundraisers such as the Macmillan Coffee Morning, Simon Blyth was also nominated for a Yorkshire Residential Property Award. More recently, Fox Valley’s first Christmas light switch-on was held from their office, where Dearne FM broadcast the show live. The Simon Blyth team were on the balcony outside the office greeting guests and handing out chocolates to local children, before inviting them to take part in a Christmas house drawing competition – the winner of which will be announced shortly. What they are fundraising for this festive season…

Christmas is a time for giving and at Simon Blyth Estate Agents at Fox Valley in Stocksbridge, you can make a difference to elderly people who are living alone this festive season.

Gloria Stewart has been organising Christmas lunches for some of the loneliest people in South Yorkshire for the past 10 years. Last year, she distributed 200 boxes full of home essentials like food, toiletries warm clothing, bed socks and scarves to housebound people living in Sheffield as part of Gloria’s Home Alone Christmas box appeal, and this year she hopes to reach even more people with the help of Sheffield businesses including Simon Blyth. What they offer…

And it’s not just the glitzy events and charity fundraisers that are attracting local residents. As well as specialising in selling and letting, they provide a range of handy services including property maintenance, financial advice, conveyancing, removals, and commercial property. If you are interested in letting, you can receive 15 per cent off their rental services - fully managed and rent collect if instructed by 31 December 2016. Why you should choose them…

Hillcrest, Deepcar – sold in 12 days

22 Sixer | www.sixermagazine.co.uk

The team offer a dedicated and personal service, seven days a week, and pride themselves in being able to sell properties quickly. “We’ve got off to a flying start this year,” says sales negotiator, Lauren Campbell. “We sold one of our properties in a week and another in just two days of them hitting the market. Our top quality service means that we are also great value for money.” @SixerRMC

Don’t believe Simon Blyth are the fastest selling agents around? Try out their 28-day challenge before Christmas. Lauren and her team guarantee to sell your property within 28 days of putting it on the market, or they will discount your fee by a whopping 25 per cent. Who to speak to…

To speak to Lauren about sales, call the office on 0114 321 6590 or email lauren.campbell@simonblyth.co.uk. For rentals, ask for Rebecca Blyth or email rebecca.blyth@simonblyth.co.uk. If you want to get involved in Gloria’s Home Alone Christmas box appeal, simply fill a box with items ranging from chocolates, to body sprays, to wind-up torches and take them to Simon Blyth by 12 December. Make your box look festive and make sure you label it male or female so the distributers know who to give it to. You can even include a Christmas card if you wish. BRADFIELD PARISH COUNCIL’S NEWSLETTER IN ASSOCIATION WITH SIXER

CHAIRMAN’S MESSAGE 016 was yet another busy year for the Bradfield Parish and Parish Council and I have thoroughly enjoyed being involved in the many local events, which continue to make Bradfield and the surrounding villages such a special place. One major development this year was Sheffield City Council’s proposals for flood protection covering our area. This is an important issue given the continuing changes to our climate and I urge everyone to view the proposals and give any feedback to Sheffield City Council – local knowledge is vital in the planning of such work. A highlight for me was the Poppy Memorial Trail, and seeing St Nicholas’ Church illuminated with images of giant poppies. I attended the opening service where the Lord Mayor switched the lights on, and laid a wreath at St Nicholas’ Church to commemorate those who have given their lives fighting for their country at the Loxley Silver Band concert. It was fantastic to see so many turn out to support the project and help raise money. The Poppy

2

Memorial Trail book is now available, sold in aid of the Royal British Legion, Help for Heroes, and St Nicholas’ Church. Earlier in September I attended the opening of the War Memorial in Storrs Wood, where Andrew Vickers had made a stunning sculpture, followed by the opening of Andrew’s new gallery on Storrs Lane. I also attended a very well organised heritage event at Knowle Top Chapel, Stannington. These are just a few events from the last year, which demonstrate the generosity and community spirit in our wonderful Parish. I would like to take this opportunity to extend thanks to all the councillors and staff for their hard work and support, and to the people of the Parish who have assisted with the projects that we have undertaken during the last year. Finally, I would like to thank you all for your continued support and wish everyone a merry Christmas and prosperous New Year.

Councillor Callum Coatham “I moved to Oughtibridge seven years ago, having previously lived in various parts of the country, including Preston, Doncaster, London and Slough. With children aged between three and 14, I have experienced many of the benefits of the strong, supportive community here in Oughtibridge, and I am extremely proud of our village and the Parish of Bradfield. “I work as an IT Transition Manager, leading and supporting the initial implementation of IT services to new customers. The role is varied and I am able to meet many new people and experience different workplaces during the course of each project. “I am excited to be involved in the continued support the Council provide for our local community, and I am particularly keen to represent Bradfield Parish residents on important issues such as the Oughtibridge Mill development, proposed flood defences and potential shale gas exploration.”

BRADFIELD PARISH COUNCIL CHRISTMAS CARD COMPETITION

ollowing such a fantastic response to 2015’s Christmas card competition, Bradfield Parish Council decided to run it once again and were delighted to receive over 150 entries from all six schools in the Parish. Children from Wharncliffe Side Primary, Bradfield Dungworth Primary, Stannington Infant, Loxley Primary, Oughtibridge Primary and Nook Lane Juniors were all given a brief to design a Christmas card. From the many entries councillors chose two finalists from each school, from which an overall winner was selected. The winning design, drawn by six-yearold Oliver Graham from Loxley Primary School, featured a family of three snowmen with presents. The design was printed onto 200 Christmas cards with the other finalists’ designs printed inside. Oliver’s mum and dad, Tina and Glynn Graham, said Oliver had really enjoyed taking part and were extremely proud to see his winning design on display for the first time. “Oliver loves painting and was delighted to win. He had been looking forward to showing us his card on display

F

at the tea party – we’re extremely proud.” All finalists and their parents were invited to a tea party at the Council offices, where the designs were on display and guests enjoyed a buffet catered for by Caroline Graham. Chairman Vickie Priestley presented each child with prizes, including a pack of the Christmas cards and a nativity advent calendar. Each school also received a £50 book token for taking part. Following the tea party, it was time for the highlight of the evening – the Parish’s Christmas tree light switch on. Everyone gathered outside and began the countdown while – as winner of the competition – Oliver stepped up to the podium and pushed down the plunger which turned on the lights of all 12 trees dotted around the Parish. “We enjoyed looking at all the cards and it’s great to hold events like this because it’s good for the schools and parents to see what goes on here,” Vicky said. “It’s fantastic that so many got involved this year – we had more entries than ever before – and we hope it will be even bigger next year.”

FRIENDS OF CORONATION PARK: ACTIVITIES 2016

oronation Park: a small, beautiful and well-maintained village park in the centre of Oughtibridge, is well used and enjoyed by families and people of all ages, particularly those with young children. The Friends of Coronation Park are a group of interested local people who have promoting outdoor activities as one of their objectives, and, to that end, we have provided – with the help of generous sponsorships – events for children in the park for the last two years. Winter has finally banished the summer, but we are left with lots of lovely memories: of happy times spent in the sunshine and enjoying long days outdoors. This year, during the school summer holidays, Friends ran weekly activities over two days. A bouncy castle was aimed at younger children, which proved very popular, and it quickly became the focus for parents and grandparents to set up their lunchtime picnics. Even on very hot days, the children showed their amazing capacity to keep bouncing. As an alternative, aimed at older children, there were a series of adventure activities which attempted to combine art and nature, and some of the woodland creations, such as the “Bogart”, were amazing. On rarer occasions, there was also very popular climbing wall, which gave everyone a chance to challenge any fear of heights in a safe way. This half term we progressed to a more energetic programme, with Ruggereds moving their very popular school courses into the park – running short sessions of rugby, netball and football training. Helping to promote core values: good manners, respect, teamwork and fair play, as well as basic skills training.

C

None of the activities would be possible without sponsorship, for which we are extremely grateful. This year the main sponsor of our summer activities was Bradfield Parish Council, with other significant support coming via the South Yorkshire Community Foundation, P&A Group Grassroots Endowment Fund and the I Love Sheffield Distribution Fund. The Ruggereds activities were funded from the SCC Ward Pot, and if anyone would like to sponsor our activities or join us please get in touch, you would be more than welcome. This year, Friends have also produced a leaflet about the trees in the park, and the next project might be the large variety of fungi that we have seen there recently. This autumn there are many unusual specimens to be seen; the park continues to surprise us. The herons are also regulars on the river, catching more fish than the anglers and Kingfishers, who still flash by at speed. We look forward to the changes that nature provides with the new seasons in Coronation Park, but on a more serious note, we have spent a considerable amount of time responding to Sheffield City Council’s flood prevention consultation. The basic principle of protecting homes and businesses has to be supported. However, as the proposals stands, the very nature of the park would be changed forever – by a substantial reduction in the area, available for activities and the elimination of the trees and views of the river – with little or no benefit to the overall scheme. Many people in the village have expressed their support of our position and, hopefully, this threat to the park will not materialise.

LOOK NO FURTHER THAN OUR COLLECTION OF TOYS THAT ARE SET TO FLY OFF THE SHELVES, ALL IN TIME FOR CHRISTMAS MORNING. hether your child is a budding pop star or lover of animals, this year we’ve got it covered. Although some of them may not be what you would call ‘cheap and cheerful’, this year’s selection definitely embrace the modern age, incorporating Bluetooth and the ever-popular ‘selfie-stick’ to help ensure they won’t come away disappointed this Christmas.

W

Fisher Price Code-A-Pillar £49.99, Age 3+ years Aiming to help children of pre-school age to learn and think independently, Fisher Price have released a caterpillar made from nine interchangeable segments, each with different directions and actions for the Code-A-Pillar to perform, moving it from one place in your living room to behind the sofa! Fisher Price have cleverly disguised a simple coding concept so that your little terror can start learning – and without even realising! BB-8 Remote Control £49.99, Age 5-11 years Have you seen the new Star Wars film? Did this adorable little robot steal your heart like it did ours?

40 Sixer | www.sixermagazine.co.uk

For a fraction of the price of a droid version of the little unsung hero of the Star Wars: The Force Awakens blockbuster, which rings in at a dear £129, we found that the remote control version was plenty realistic. With the ability to roll in any direction desired, BB-8 will even make some of the sounds made in the film, promising to occupy your child for hours on end, taking him with them on their own adventures. Chad Valley Tiny Treasures Newborn Open Eye Baby £39.99, Age 3+ years Almost like bringing your own child home from the hospital, this startlingly realistic baby doll comes equipped with hospital tag and birth certificate. If that wasn’t realistic enough, the baby boy or girl is also scented, so smells like a real life baby – we’re assuming they mean a nice clean smell! So if they’re

@SixerRMC

excited to test their mummy or daddy skills on a doll that looks, feels and smells like a new-born, this affordable option is a definite contender. Zoomer Chimp £119.99, Age 4+ years Ignoring the price for this next-generation chimpanzee robot from renowned robot manufacturers Zoom, this toy is so advanced, it’s astonishing. With the ability to respond using voice recognition and perform over 100 tricks including flips, this is guaranteed to become a new-addition to the family. Nerf Modulus Tri-Strike Blaster £59.99, Age 8-16 years Prepare for combat with Hasbro’s latest addition to the Nerf gun family. This model lets you build your own gun for battle, using the interchangeable fittings for whatever kind of pursuit they’re on.

Best-selling toys from years gone by 1964: Tiny Tears Doll – Three-time winner of toy of the year, Tiny Tears could cry real tears and even wet her nappy. 1980: Rubik’s Cube – Since it was launched across the globe in 1980, it’s thought that the Rubik’s Cube has sold 400 million of the colourful, square, frustrating, toy. 1982: BMX Bike – The Bicycle Motocross bike became a popular choice for children as racing your bicycle on dirt tracks became cool.

WowWeeCHiP the Robot Dog

If you’re prepared to be pelted with endless rounds of soft (but ego-bruising) Nerf darts for the entirety of the Christmas period, get shopping! SelfieMic £19.99, Age 8+ years Do you have a budding Beyoncé or a One Direction wannabe in the midst? This gadget will help them reach stardom, or at least enable them to make their own songs and music videos using their smartphone or iPod. Attaching to your device, the SelfieMic has an accompanying app, letting them sing along to some of the most recent chart toppers, from the likes of Justin Bieber and Taylor Swift. As the cheapest toy on the list this year, we’d say it’s a bargain for anyone keen to sing, lip-sync and perform a huge library of different songs.

1983: Cabbage Patch Kids – These softtoy dolls took the toy market by storm as their hand-stitched friendly faces were adored by the masses. 1985: Care Bears – Following their first appearance in their own film (The Care Bears Movie), these loveable bears were a must-have accessory. 1987: Sylvanian Families – This nostalgic toy range based on the concepts of Nature, Love and Family, fuelled the imaginations of children all over. 1987: Koosh Ball – The stringy rubber ball

Zoomer Chimp

helps children to develop motor skills. 1991: GameBoy – The revolutionary video game from Japan amazed all by just how pocket-sized it was. 1992: WWF Action Figures – Capturing the personalities of the world’s most famous wrestling heroes, these collectable figures were a healthy obsession of thousands. 1999: Who wants to be a Millionaire? – The popular multiple-choice television trivia show was reproduced in board game form and enjoyed by households far and wide.

Fisher Price Code-A-Pillar

WowWeeCHiP the Robot Dog £199.99, Age 8+ years A hot rival to the Zoomer Chimp from Zoom, CHiP’s robot dog also doesn’t go easy on your wallet. Intelligent, friendly puppy CHiP comes with a SmartBand, which allows the dog to recognise and interact with the wearer. Never fear, this toy won’t need batteries! When CHiP is running low on life it makes its way back to its SmartBed, where it can recharge itself. Can toys be any more convenient?

Snuggles My Dream Puppy £49.99, Age 4+ years Another of these hands-ontype toys, this dream puppy takes adorable to a whole new level. Able to move its face, and even breathe when asleep, Snuggles is just like a real pet. Just a little bit cheaper! Let your child tickle its tummy or kiss its nose, and this battery-powered pooch will become a companion that won’t just be for Christmas.

@SixerRMC

Finding Dory My Friend Dory £49.99, Age 4+ years From Disney Pixar’s hit film Finding Dory comes everyone’s favourite character Dory. Although not suitable for use in water, this interactive toy can recite various phrases from the movie and when poked or nudged, will react in true Dory style. Great for fans of the film, however a little on the pricy side for what it is. Hatchimal £59.99, Age 5+ years A new concept for 2016, the Hatchimal is an interactive magical creature that’s just waiting to meet the world. Craving love in order for it to hatch, this toy’s eyes light up when it’s ready to come out. Believe it or not, but this creature can actually peck its way out itself! Like your very own real-life pet, once hatched this creature can be great company.

There is nothing more we enjoy than being warm in winter, unfortunately for us and our pets - so do fleas. As we turn on the heating or sit by a fire the flea is busy reproducing. Cats and dogs in our warm houses provide the ideal breeding environment, infestation is rapid and very quickly our pets are suffering. The fleas will continue to reproduce in carpets and bedding. Talk to us at Hallam Veterinary Centre. Our vets will prescribe a treatment programme which will help ensure that your pets are flea free, comfortable and healthy as part of an essential preventive health programme.

ENTERTAINMENT

SHE’S BACK… OH, YES SHE IS! CORRIE STAR WENDI PETERS TALKS TO PHOEBE SEYMOUR ABOUT RETURNING TO HER ROOTS AT THE CRUCIBLE. chemes and scams were her bread and butter on Coronation Street. Now the actress who played Cilla BattersbyBrown is trading the cobbled streets of Weatherfield for the bright lights of the Sheffield stage. Wendi Peters will be joining a starstudded cast at the Lyceum for this year’s panto production of Snow White And The Seven Dwarfs as the Wicked Queen. The panto baddie is a character we all love to hate and Wendi says she cannot wait to take on the role. “Oh, there’s nothing like being a baddie,” says Wendi. “It’s absolutely brilliant. I love being booed and hissed, especially by the kids. That’s all part of the panto. “It’s a really important thing is panto. It’s the first time a lot of these kids have been in a live theatre. They’re our future theatre audiences, so if they come and have a wonderful time, they’ll keep coming back and move on to other things and become theatre buffs for the rest of their lives, which is just brilliant.” Though Wendi is best known for being on our screens as Cilla, she is no stranger to the stage and says performing in Sheffield will be something of a homecoming. “I loved being in Corrie, I adored the character and I loved everybody there and I had a brilliant time, but I’d already done 15 years in the theatre, so I feel like I’m just going back to doing what I do. I did lots of musicals, it’s where I come from, so I’m really lucky that I’ve managed to go back to do a lot of stuff like that. “My first ever job, when I left college in ’87, was here at The Crucible. I did panto here. I was one of the dancers in Cinderella, so I feel like 29 years later, I’m coming home, coming back to where I started.” Most families will be very familiar with the story of Snow White and the Wicked Queen, but what can we expect from her modern, panto incarnation? “Obviously, she’ll be as glamorous. I’d like to play her quite regal and quite posh, and she might just slip every now and then into something a bit northern. And of course we’ll have the old hag that tries to persuade Snow White with the apple, so we’ll have fun with that.”

S

There is plenty of choice for panto fans across the region. Here are a few highlights: Snow White And The Seven Dwarfs 9 December – 8 January Lyceum Tel: 0114 249 6000 www.sheffieldtheatres.co.uk Tickets: £12 - £26, family ticket £78 Snow White And The Seven Dwarfs 10 December – 1 January Buxton Opera House Tel: 0845 127 2190 www.buxtonoperahouse.org.uk Tickets: £17.50 - £23 Jack And The Beanstalk by Manor Operatic Society 27 December – 8 January Sheffield City Hall Tel: 01709 365108 or 0114 278 9789 www.sheffieldcityhall.co.uk Tickets: £5.50 - £19 Jack And The Beanstalk by The James Brandon Company 1 – 31 December The Academy Theatre, Barnsley Tel: 01226 744442 www.theacademytheatre.co.uk Tickets: From £13.50, family ticket £44

The demand for pantomimes seems to get stronger and stronger every year (last year’s panto was seen by over 46,000 people), and Wendi believes they remain so popular because they are a deeply-loved tradition the whole family can get involved in. “It’s a good mixture of song and dance, comedy, audience participation and a bit of a spectacle as well – everybody loves to come and see lots of glitter,” she says. “Us Brits eccentric as we are - we’re known around the world for this silly thing. I think it’s such a wonderful British tradition, and I hope it never ends, because it’s great fun.” You can see Wendi and the rest of the cast – including Phil Gallagher (CBeebies’ Mister Maker), Damian Williams (Sheffield panto legend) and Joanna Sawyer (Becky from BBC One’s Our Girl) - in this year’s spectacular production at the Lyceum from Friday 9 December until Sunday 8 January. @SixerRMC

DAVID J. MARTIN A.I.O.C.

The home of quality

FROM STUNNING HAND-CRAFTED KITCHENS TO BESPOKE FURNITURE, DAVID J MARTIN’S ATTENTION TO DETAIL PRODUCES BEAUTIFUL RESULTS. n these days of mass produced furniture it seems almost impossible to find beautiful bespoke, handmade pieces, whether that be for your kitchen, bedroom, study or lounge. At David J Martin customers are welcomed into the firm’s on-site workshop, to see their furniture come to life. “People often don’t believe that the workshop is here, under the showroom” said owner David Martin. “Then we bring them downstairs and they’re blown away.” There’s a team of eight, highly trained carpenters working on kitchen cabinets and islands, bedroom furniture, desks and study furniture, each one made unique to order. David himself is a carpenter by trade, training for years before completing a degree in the subject. He ensures his staff are trained to the highest standard, resulting in the finest quality products. Everything at David J Martin happens under one roof, so David himself can check the quality and finish of each product at every stage of the process. “Our attention to detail is second to none and this makes us stand out from the crowd,” said David. “We are not held to ransom by mass-produced products as we make everything from scratch – even down to making our own cutters for producing mouldings.” This means you can add to your kitchen

I

in years to come and the company will still be able to match the designs. In the David J Martin showroom, a stunning range of kitchens is on display, but the company also produces bespoke furniture for every room in the house. For the bedroom, the company builds beautiful wardrobes, and other unique storage solutions for difficult spaces. For the study, David’s team of carpenters can build desks and media spaces. After an initial customer consultation, when David will discuss budgets and offer expert design advice, the cabinetmakers work from plans drawn by David and create bespoke furniture, which can be sprayed to high gloss or satin finishes using durable Two Pac paint. With larger companies, you will often see doors advertised as having a ‘high-gloss finish’. This means that they are vinylwrapped and, although this does produce a shiny look, it means that you will be able to see the joins. David J Martin’s professional sprayer can apply any colour you wish in their paintspraying booth, giving a modern finish with no joins. That means water cannot seep in and cause peeling – something that can happen with vinyl-wrapped doors. Everything is done in-house, which enables David to guarantee high quality at every stage. For those customers undertaking full refurbishment of their home, David J Martin

can provide a one-stop shop for structural, plumbing and electricity work, as well as building furniture. David said: “We run a building company alongside our bespoke joinery company, so customers are not waiting for plumbers, electricians and so on. We can take care of everything and ensure that the project is completed to the highest standard.” For David it’s all about creating a high quality customer experience, whether the job be big or small. One call to David J Martin could result in a stunning new extension, complete with kitchen, plumbing and electricity – David only employs the best tradesmen. In the company’s 36 years of trading, David J Martin has built a superb reputation for customer satisfaction. The company is highly regarded for their customer and after-sales service, ensuring that every customer is a happy one and fixing any problems with their furniture, whether that be two weeks or ten years down the line. LEFT: Joe Hunter in the factory

Continuing success WHEN A LOCAL BUSINESS IS STILL GOING STRONG AFTER MORE THAN 40 YEARS IT MUST BE DOING SOMETHING RIGHT... TIME TO TAKE A CLOSER LOOK AT THE CONTINUED SUCCESS STORY THAT IS SHEFFIELD WINDOW CENTRE. t was way back in 1975, when Rubik’s Cubes were all the rage and Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen topped the charts, that the company was founded. Fast forward 41years and Ian Hunter, who took over the running of Sheffield Window Centre (SWC) in the early eighties, is managing director... and with all his four grown-up children also involved, this is a true family business. You don’t last that long in the same city unless you receive consistently excellent feedback from satisfied customers – and as the decades have rolled by, generations of Sheffield folk have found SWC to be the first, and most reliable, name they look for. SWC was also the first Sheffield business to be given Trusted Trader status by Which?, a nationwide consumer champion website that not only tests products from washing machines to power tools, but also gives local companies a rigorous assessment before naming only the very best on their online directory of recommended trades people. Of course, there have been big changes since 1975 and SWC has stayed at the very top by investing in new machinery, adopting green policies, and constantly researching methods of production to provide the most up-to-date levels of security and thermal efficiency.

I

A family affair... L-R: Ian, Sam, Amy and Ian Hunter

50 Sixer | www.sixermagazine.co.uk

The one thing that hasn’t changed, and never will, is their “old fashioned” approach to selling. SWC is renowned for its ‘No Pressure Policy’ – leaving customers to decide in their own time. Whether it be price, product, or service – they can’t be beaten and that’s the reason they never need to push or pester. The company, which has premises on Oakbrook Road, Broad Lane, Scotland Street and Rockingham Street, uses top brand REHAU – a market leader in polymer extrusion – for all their installations. Their multi-chambered profile uPVC doesn’t warp or discolour like so many lesser brands. And if you’re worried you won’t be able to get a frame to match your desired colour or design, don’t be. Frames come in a variety of coloured foils, including cream, black, grey and green, as well as several wood grain colours including rosewood and oak. You can also have your frames sprayed to match any RAL colour – so you’ll have new windows that look exactly how you want them to. Good-looking windows are no good if you can still feel the chill – but thanks to SWC, you won’t feel a thing. Their standard windows have energy efficiency ratings of A, while their standard double-glazed units are made from Pilkington’s KS glass, are argonfilled and incorporate a warm edge spacer bar to retain the heat in your home. It’s not just about staying cosy, though – energy efficient windows can help you to make big savings on your heating bill. Perhaps the most important thing you want from a window is to know that it’s secure, that it will keep would-be thieves successfully at bay. SWC’s windows are fitted with a multi-point shoot bolt locking mechanism – the best there is. They also fit anti-jemmy devices on all vulnerable opening windows –

@SixerRMC

so you’ve got the peace of mind of knowing that you’ll be as safe as possible. Don’t be misled by the name, by the way – SWC do more than just windows. They offer an expert stained glass service and fascias and soffits, as well as high-quality doors. These all have Hoppe Security handles fitted as standard – approved by the police, no less – as well as cylinder locks which are anti-pick, drill, snap and bump and again have a multipoint locking system. There’s more, too – specifically, conservatories. Due to the advances in glass specification, SWC can now provide conservatories, which are suitable for yearround use, thanks to glass which has been specifically designed for the purpose. It offers a wide range of benefits including thermal insulation with solar control, glare reduction, enhanced sound insulation and self-cleaning properties. The company can also install underfloor heating and laminated floors, as well as taking care of the building, plastering and electrical work, so you only deal with one point of contact throughout the entire process. Get in touch with Sheffield Window Centre today – they care about your windows, doors and conservatories just as much as you do. s the morning frost sparkles in the winter sun and the smell of turkey drifts on the December air, the first note of a carol echoes across the Rivelin Valley, its crescendo rousing all around to sing their praises of the festive season. Their voices are proud, singing carols that haven’t been heard in a church for centuries, instead they have been kept alive in the pubs of North Sheffield, passed from punter to punter over a pint, and today, is the day they are sung the loudest. This is Christmas Day in Stannington. And the day isn’t complete without the Stannington Brass Band. After a round of carols, the band sits down with a bacon sandwich and a glass of sherry, a welcome gift from village residents and very well deserved after the band’s busy festive schedule. From mid-November the band are booked up performing at pubs, churches and in villages, performing a range of traditional and local carols. Throughout December they have 20 engagements, including the Christmas Day and Boxing Day carols in Stannington, a custom loved by generations. “The local carols are very specific to the area,” said Lorraine Dyson, spokesperson for

Stannington Brass Band. “We are incredibly proud to be part of keeping the tradition alive. “Different places have their own tunes, there’s even one called Stannington, the words are quite old and peculiar and not like traditional carols at all.” The Stannington Brass Band are no strangers to tradition, having been around since the 1800s in various incarnations

themselves. As well as their pub gigs, December is also a time for charity – every year the band perform a concert for St Luke’s Hospice and this year they’re teaming up with John Reilly of Sheffield band Boy on a Dolphin for a Christmas concert at Sheffield Cathedral in support of Weston Park Cancer Charity. “We often perform more contemporary songs in our concerts because it’s more of a mixed programme,” said Lorraine. “We do a lot of gigs locally.” Outside of the festive season, the band spend a lot of time competing, and are currently both Yorkshire and national champions for the second section. In the brass band world, competitions are organised like football leagues, with different divisions for different abilities, the second section being just beneath the elite league of bands. And despite being up against some of the best bands in the country, Stannington have had a string of success, winning five competitions in a row at brass festivals around the UK. Lorraine said: “The band has had a phenomenal year due to the hard work and dedication of the players and their musical director, Derek Renshaw. We have done

“The local carols are very specific to the area, we are incredibly proud to be part of keeping the tradition alive.” – Lorraine Dyson Stannington and Sheffield proud and, following our promotion, look forward to the challenge of contesting at a higher level in the first section in the coming year.” Hoping to echo the success of Stannington’s senior band is the training band, formed from beginners, kids and those returning to brass. With more than 40 members, the training band is led by an enthusiastic and talented conductor who leads them through fun and exciting songs in a fun and inclusive environment. “The training band is less conventional,” said Lorraine. “We get everybody, from real youngsters to retired people who haven’t played in years, they really benefit from the experience of senior band members who attend rehearsals.” With youngsters in training, the future of Stannington Brass Band, and the singing of carols with a brass band at Christmas is a tradition set to ring across the hills of Sheffield for centuries to come.

COMPETITION

Winner Christine Vincent with her daughter-inlaw Lindsey (left) and with staff from RMC Media and My Fathers Heart (below) – and prizes

30 years... we have a winner

AFTER MONTHS OF ANTICIPATION AND THOUSANDS OF ENTRIES, A WINNER WAS CHOSEN FOR OUR FABULOUS 30TH ANNIVERSARY WINNER-TAKES-ALL GIVEAWAY. hen Christine Vincent saw the incredible selection of prizes up for grabs in RMC Media’s winner-takesall 30th anniversary competition, she nearly didn’t bother entering. And while she was right to assume that thousands of readers from our range of nine monthly titles would also have a go, she did well to follow her more positive instincts... because hers was the first name out of the hat. Our competition – with 30 superb prizes donated by independent businesses from across the region – has been the centrepiece of RMC Media’s 30th anniversary celebrations this year. The grand finale came when Christine joined us for a champagne reception in the showroom of RMC Media’s media partner, My Fathers Heart, to celebrate her success and see the superb selection of prizes on display. Christine, who lives in Doncaster and is a regular reader of our Eastside magazine, said she was still in a state of shock when she

came along, with her daughter-in-law Lindsey, to collect her prizes. Joining in the celebrations were representatives from RMC Media and My Fathers Heart and Jackie Gill from Bradfield Brewery, who donated 30 bottles of the limited edition Thirty Something ale, brewed specially to celebrate our 30th anniversary. Harriet Coulthard from My Fathers Heart said: “It was lovely for us as a company to be able to host such a happy occasion, and to see Christine so thrilled to receive all those great prizes.” Over the next few months our special winner can look forward to living the high life, thanks to a package of prizes that includes race days, holidays, hotel stays, jewellery, luxurious food and enough fizz to stage a very special celebration party for family and friends. “I get Eastside every month and read it right through. When I saw all those prizes I thought, ‘I’ll never win it, but I’ll give it a go.’ And then when I was told I’d won I couldn’t

believe it. I’ve not been able to sleep, I’m so excited. All the prizes look great and they’ve come just in time for Christmas.” As her good fortune begins to sink in, Christine is already starting to think about which prizes she is going to keep, and which will be shared with family and friends. “I am looking forward to the flights to Guernsey and also staying at The Crown Hotel in Bawtry, which is near where I live, so I am saving that for my birthday,” she said. “I’m going to share most of the prizes with my family. Lindsey is taking her nieces to see Diversity in Leeds, my partner Martin McNicholas and my son-in-law Richard Whitticker will be doing the adventure day at Yorkshire Outdoors and my son, David Glenn Vincent, will have the Bailey bracelet and then the boys will enjoy the 30 bottles of beer between them – I’m keeping the watch from PA Jewellery for myself!” And so she should. Congratulations Christine.

PLANS FOR A CARE FEES CAP “ABANDONED”… Here are five things you need to know about care fees funding. April 2016 should have seen the most significant changes in a generation to the law relating to the provision of social care, with the introduction of the second part of the Care Act 2014*. Here’s five things you need to know: 1) The Personal Expense Allowance – when an individual requires care and is means tested, the first thing to be taken to fund their care is their income. All an individual’s means testable income will be taken to fund their care, with just £24.40 per week (the Personal Expense Allowance) being left untouched… 2) The means test – this will be conducted by the relevant Local Authority when an individual needs to access care. The means test is an assessment of an individual’s assets (income, property, savings etc) to ascertain whether they should be funding their care themselves. The means test thresholds for capital assets were due to change in April 2016 but have now been “delayed” until 2020 so remain as follows: i)

Assets less than £14,250 = your care will be funded in full by your Local Authority ii) Assets more than £23,250 = you will have to cover the cost of your care in full iii) Assets between £14,250 and £23,250 = you will have to make a contribution towards the cost of your care, which could be a very significant sum 3) The “funding cap” was also due to be introduced in April 2016. It was intended to limit the amount an individual will be required to pay towards their care at £72,000, but again that has been delayed to 2020 so there is currently still no cap in place. 4) Deferred Payment Agreements don’t mean you no longer have to sell your home to fund your care. Initial statements by Government ministers suggested there would be no need for anyone to sell their home to fund their care. However, the legislation actually introduces a nationwide scheme, called Deferred Payment Agreements, which could mean your home doesn’t need to be sold during your lifetime, but still could be sold after your death. Clearly there is a big difference.

You need to take advice if… • You or your spouse/partner don’t yet have a Will. • You have a Will but it leaves everything to your spouse/partner. • You don’t have both kinds of Lasting Powers of Attorney set up. • You or your spouse/partner don’t have a pre-paid Funeral Plan. • You are divorced or widowed. • You have children. • You are concerned about what will happen and covering the costs if you need long term residential care.

5) Plan ahead – perhaps of most significance, you can opt to plan ahead and protect what you’ve worked hard for. Using a Trust, created under the terms of your Will or during your lifetime, can help protect your home and savings for future generations. However, for this planning to be effective, it must be done at a time when you are fit and healthy. Using the right Trust for your personal circumstances and objectives is vital, so taking advice from a specialist is an important first step. You can take the first step by calling Collective Legal Solutions on 0114 288 1104 and requesting more information. *applies in England only, with Wales yet to introduce new legislation

Crowds celebrate Fox Valley’s first Christmas lights switch-on Hundreds of people braved the wintry weather to celebrate Fox Valley’s first big Christmas Lights Switch On with an event hosted by Dearne FM. There was entertainment from the local Lauren McCaslin School of Theatre Dance and St Ann’s Catholic Primary School Choir, before the big switch on. The stunning lights display was turned on by lucky competition winner James Johnson, seven, from Deepcar, along with Santa and the Mayor of Stocksbridge, Cllr Alan Laws. James won the centre’s competition to name the seven-metre-high reindeer, who is now called Foxicle. The lucky youngster also received a Christmas hamper full of toys, sweets and gifts from Regatta, Pets at Home and Ponti’s Italian Kitchen. Look out for more events on the run up to Christmas and late-night shopping until 8pm every Thursday and Friday. For more information, visit www.foxvalleysheffield.co.uk/events.

Deborah rides nearly 300 miles to raise cancer awareness

BITS &S PIECE

A local life coach and fundraiser, rode 275 miles in three days to raise funds for Weston Park Cancer Hospital Charity and to raise awareness of the disease. Deborah Cundy has raised thousands of pounds for the charity over the year through various bike rides, but this year’s was particularly close to her heart. She rode the coast to coast of Ireland, from County Mayo to Dublin, raising £1,317.22 for the hospital, in memory of her friend, Jane Cooper. “Jane was diagnosed with terminal lung cancer in August 2015 and passed away this July,” says Deborah. “She was always fit and healthy and didn’t smoke, so it came as a big shock. It just started out as a cough. We didn’t think anything of it until she got the diagnosis. “One in three of us will be affected by cancer at some point in our lives and by 2020, it is said that one in two of us will be affected. Whilst it was great to raise more money for the hospital again, the main message I want people to take away is to get themselves checked out – even if it’s just a small symptom like a cough.” To find out more, visit www.wphcancercharity.org.uk.

Top award for Sheffield Window Centre Sheffield Window Centre has won the Installer of the Year award at the UK Window Industry Awards thanks to its “opposite approach” to customer service. Director Ian Hunter puts the firm’s win down to its focus on customer service. Rather than chasing customers for business, Sheffield Window Centre’s salespeople visit once, before posting out a quote and leaving the decision to the customer. The family-run firm, which employs 74 staff, was presented with the accolade at The G Awards, often described as the Oscars of the 72 Sixer | www.sixermagazine.co.uk

window industry. Ian said: “Our award was a really proud moment for all of our family, and I would like to thank every single member of staff, because without all their hard work, this wouldn't have been possible.” To find out more about Sheffield Window Centre visit, www.sheffield-windowcentre.co.uk. @SixerRMC

Joan knits poppies for Armistice Day A local lady raised £500 after knitting and selling 300 poppies for Armistice Day. Joan Johnson, 82, from Stannington was taught to knit by her grandfather 70 years ago, and it has been a lifelong hobby ever since. A couple of years ago she found a pattern for poppies and knitted a few for her family, who were inundated with compliments and requests. In July, she began knitting poppies for the 2016 Poppy Appeal and had raised an amazing £500 by Armistice Day. “We are all so proud of her,” says her granddaughter, Sarah Nelis. “It's given her a new lease of life. She's often at local craft fairs, and at the beginning of November, she delivered a seminar to Sheffield Hallam University, where she got all the students knitting poppies. They went on to make more of their own and raised further funds for the appeal.” To find out more about The Royal British Legion and their Poppy Appeal, visit www.britishlegion.org.uk.

Cubana celebrate UK rum capital accolade with new music and cocktail lounge After a 10,000 mile round trip to source the most expensive rum in the world, Cubana in Sheffield’s Leopold Square swept the board at the 10th annual Rum Barrel Awards, beating more than 60 entries from across the UK. The venue’s first dedicated rum menu is the result of months of research. Assistant manager John Wickham said: “Our menu is extensive, but also personal and informative – there’s a wellbalanced selection which includes many obscure, delicious and affordable expressions of rum.” Cubana also officially launched its new live music and cocktail lounge, helping to celebrate its accolade, as well as encouraging customers to sample their rum-inspired cocktails. The Live Music Lounge will host some of Sheffield’s most talented artists every Friday and Saturday night and offers a full table service. Pre-book by emailing info@cubanatapasbar.co.uk. Energy company offers Sheffield community shares for a sustainable future Sheffield Renewables launched their second community share, giving local people another opportunity to invest and benefit from community-owned renewable solar energy produced in Sheffield. The share offer event at Sheffield’s Quaker Meeting House kick-started two months of promotion to raise £70,000 from investors to deliver two more solar PV schemes. Sheffield Renewables has already raised £16,000 from investors and are half way to being able to fund their next solar PV project, which will be installed on the roof of Lembas - a local vegetarian and wholefood wholesalers and cooperative, based in Heeley. Lembas will benefit from a reduction in electricity costs and will lower their carbon footprint through the use of renewable solar energy. Income from the sale of electricity and the government's Feed In Tariff will help Sheffield Renewables generate revenue to support further renewable energy schemes and a Community Benefit Fund to help local projects, as well as paying a 3 per cent return to investors. Sheffield Renewables are always looking for organisations to work with. If you would like to get involved, email info@sheffieldrenewables.org.uk. BOOKS

Connecting generations RISING STAR ANNEEKA LUDHRA’S MISSION TO DISCOVER THE TRUE FLAVOURS OF INDIA IS REVEALED IN A BRAND NEW BOOK FROM RMC MEDIA. ake seven grandmothers. Combine with 500 years’ experience. Finish with an up-and-coming star of Indian cookery. The result? A tasty mix of know-how and show-how that’s set to be a big hit this Christmas – with a little life advice thrown in for free. Anneeka Ludhra’s new book ‘Dadima’s: Celebrating Grandmother’s Wisdom Through Indian Cooking’ brings traditional expertise bang up-to-date in a cookbook with a difference. Berkshire-based Anneeka, 25, looked to the older generation as a starting point when she set out on a mission to discover the true flavours of the old country and connect generations in the process. She then added her own twist to almost 50 classic recipes, all of which are lavishly illustrated in the 224-page book. And the seven grandmothers she found through her network didn’t stop there. As well as being consulted on the finer points of Indian cooking, each of them added a little spice in the form of some pearls of wisdom to pass on to the younger generation. “Older people have so much to offer, not only in the secrets of the kitchen learned over many decades, but in life experience,” says

T

Anneeka. “Of course it’s the food that really does the talking in the book – heeding the life advice is optional!” The research for her book took her all over the country to seek out grandmothers she knew of, renowned for their excellent cooking. “We carefully prepared every recipe from scratch with the aim of showing people how to make truly authentic dishes at home. The result is a far cry from what you might find in most Indian restaurants. Their menus feature cuisine which has, not surprisingly, been adapted to the English palate. But in the case of the grandmothers, there was more of a connection with India, and the knowledge they brought over here with them has been passed down across the centuries.” The recipes chosen for the book are written in an informal style, with plenty of pointers for the amateur cook. Among them are old-school favourites like aloo paratha (stuffed potato flatbread), aloo gobi, mah di daal, cholay and pea and potato samosas, together with dishes for those with a sweeter tooth, such as mango kulfi and barfi. The handsome hardback book (ISBN 9781-907998-25-6) is published by RMC Media and makes the ideal Christmas gift. @SixerRMC

‘Dadima’s: Celebrating Grandmother’s Wisdom Through Indian Cooking’ is available via Amazon priced at £19.95. For more information, visit www.dadimas.co.uk. Sixer | www.sixermagazine.co.uk 77

WINE

Festive tipples

MARTIN WILKES OF MW WINES HAS SOME HELPFUL HINTS TO ENSURE YOU ARE DRINKING NOTHING BUT THE GOOD STUFF OVER THE FESTIVE PERIOD. t’s safe to say that most of us will be enjoying a glass or two of our favourite tipple over the festive season and there’ll be a fair bit of clinking of glasses and toasting going on. But have you ever wondered why we touch glasses before getting down to the serious business of drinking? The reason is that the sound of clinking of glasses brings the fifth sense, ie hearing, into the experience. The other four senses – sight, smell, taste and touch – all contribute to the enjoyment of drinking. Talking of hearing, one of the reasons that traditionalists prefer to have a cork closure on a bottle is to enjoy that satisfying noise when the cork comes out (sometimes, it has to be said, after a bit of a struggle). Screwcaps do the job but don’t add enjoyment to the experience. Christmastime brings with it so many choices: turkey or goose? Goose this year for us, I know that goose fat and roasties is a winning combination. Present opening early or after dinner? Scrabble or Monopoly? A trawl through the terrestrial channels (will Eric and Ernie make it?) or a DVD blockbuster? So, what to drink over the holiday time? As soon as winter bites, it’s worth having some mulled wine on hand. This has an interesting history... in early Roman times, bad wine,

I

corked as we know it, would be boiled to make it drinkable. Now mulled wine, or Gluhwein as it’s known in Germany, can be bought at a reasonable price; warm it through, add cloves and cinnamon sticks and make you way through the piles of cards waiting to be written. Incidentally, it makes a great double act with stollen cake. With such a bewildering variety of wines to choose from my advice would be to keep it simple. Go for a top Prosecco and a couple of bottles of pink fizz as well. For the whites, Chablis is the class act but quite pricey now, so look at Australian Chardonnay. If Sauvignon Blanc is the favourite tipple in your house, look at New Zealand or Chile or top of the range Sancerre. And for the reds, well this year has seen Malbec arrive as the must-have wine. Try some Cote du Rhone winter warmers, they are quite easy on the pocket too. And do have a wine to go with the Christmas pud. Nowadays every wine producing country will have a pudding or dessert wine, so again look at New World countries. And as always, buy the best wines you can... the chef in the house deserves it! For more information call 07961 608703 or email mwwines@hotmail.co.uk @SixerRMC

Luxury Lettings – and so property rentals have become a successful part of the business too. Landmark location

City Towers is the latest project – offering 55 apartments, mainly one bed, with a unique and innovative atrium roof – the building is fast becoming a landmark in the surrounding area. Located in Shalesmoor, the properties benefit from the usual high specifications of a Campbell Homes build – fully-fitted kitchen, flooring, a security system and a lift to all floors, and due to the location, it is close to the University of Sheffield, the Children’s, Weston Park and Hallamshire hospitals, with good transport links via Supertram and the bus to the city centre and Meadowhall. Close by there is a large supermarket in addition to smaller local traders.

These apartments have been sold off-plan, however, it is believed that a few will remain available to buy in 2017 – ideal for the buy to let market. A selection of these apartments are now being offered for rent by Campbell Luxury Lettings – offering the chance to live in a brand new apartment with spectacular views of Sheffield and experiencing living close enough to the city centre to enjoy the vibrant city centre lifestyle. Also available

Several apartments at Victoria Park Sheffield 8 and Huntsman Lodge, Sheffield 5 are also for sale and they are suitable for investors and owner occupiers alike.
