EXPERIENCED FUNERAL DIRECTOR MARTYN JOINS OLD-ESTABLISHED FAMILY FIRM. he clocks may be going back but things are moving forward at G&M Lunt, family funeral directors for over 80 years.

Michael Lunt has announced that Martyn Askew, who is Woodseats born and bred with over 40 years in the profession, has joined the company as director of funeral services, responsible for the day to day running of the company after many years’ experience managing the John Fairest Funeral Homes.

G & M Lunt was established by George Lunt in 1932 with his wife Mabel, son Jack and daughter Mary, who joined the company as the business grew. Michael joined in 1969. In 1976 George passed away and Mary’s son Andrew joined in 1985.

Sadly Jack passed away in 1987, so Michael and Andrew ran the business together until Andrew retired. Michael carried on running the business for many years with the support of his dedicated staff.

Now time has come to hand over the reins to Martyn, a friend for over 40 years and an outstanding funeral director. Michael Lunt will still be actively involved in the business on a day to day basis.

Martyn said: “It is a privilege to be asked, and an honour to accept this appointment. Our families have been linked in many ways over the years. It is like coming home, and I am looking forward to working for such a well-established and much respected funeral directors as G & M Lunt.�

BRADFIELD PARISH COUNCIL’S NEWSLETTER IN ASSOCIATION WITH SIXER

CHAIRMAN’S MESSAGE s another busy year for Bradfield Parish Council comes to a close, it’s time to reflect on some of the many wonderful community events that have taken place over the last 12 months.

A highlight for me was the Stannington Remembrance Service, which I attended alongside representatives from the Parish, LordLieutenant for South Yorkshire, local Scouts, Brownies and Guides, the local TA and Stannington Brass Band.

We marched to the Lomas Hall war memorial to observe the laying of the wreaths and partake in a two-minute silence and it was fantastic to see so many turn out to remember those who lost their lives fighting for our country.

I also had the honour of hosting the Bradfield Parish Christmas card competition, for which there’s a special feature in this edition of the newsletter which I hope you’ll enjoy. Primary schools in the Parish took part and the children had a lovely time.

Looking ahead to the coming months and into the new year, as development continues across the Parish the Parish Council will continue to be involved in such matters as affordable housing, principally the developments in Oughtibridge Mill, Platts Lane, the Waterworks, Dyson’s site and Greaves Lane.

The Parish Council will also continue an active role on the steering committee of the Sheffield Lakeland Landscape Partnership in the final phase to secure Heritage Lottery funding for the programme that will bring many benefits to the community and surrounding area.

Finally, I would like to take this opportunity to extend thanks to all the councillors and staff for their hard work and support, and to our ground staff for keeping the Parish looking its best. Our thanks must also go to all those who give up their time to assist with the projects that continue to make Bradfield and the surrounding villages such a special place.

Bradfield Parish Council Christmas Card Competition ollowing such a fantastic response to last year’s Christmas card competition, Bradfield Parish Council decided to run it once again and were delighted to have received over 100 entries from five schools in the Parish.

Children from Wharncliffe Side Primary, Bradfield Dungworth Primary, Stannington Infant, Loxley Primary, and Nook Lane Juniors were all given a brief to design a Christmas card. From the many entries councillors chose two finalists from each school, from which an overall winner was selected.

Junior School, featured a reindeer named Luna, surrounded by a backdrop of snowflakes. The design was printed onto 200 Christmas cards with the other finalists’ designs printed inside.

Olivia’s mum and dad, Gerard Coles and Nicola Donnelly, said Olivia had enjoyed taking part and were extremely proud to see her winning design on display for the first time. “Olivia loves art, nature and animals and her design is just fantastic. Her art teacher is great at school and always encourages her. She was delighted to have won and we are extremely proud of her achievement,” they said.

All finalists and their parents were invited to a tea party at the Council offices, where the designs were on display and guests enjoyed a buffet catered for by Caroline Graham. Chairman Victoria Talbot presented each child with prizes, including a pack of the Christmas cards and a nativity advent calendar. Each school also received a £50 book token for taking part.

Following the tea party, it was time for the highlight of the evening – the Parish’s Christmas tree light switch on. Everyone gathered outside and began the countdown while – as winner of the competition – Olivia stepped up to the podium and pushed down the plunger which turned on the lights of all 12 trees dotted around the Parish.

“This is the highlight of the year, and a fantastic way to bring in Christmas. It is great working with all the local schools to produce such wonderful Christmas cards,” Victoria said. “It was a very hard decision for councillors, but we decided on Olivia Coles’ reindeer – Luna – and we are proud to send the cards out to all the Sheffield dignitaries. I’d like to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.”

The Parish Councillors are considering the addition of a cafe facility in Coronation Park, Oughtibridge.

At this moment in time it is envisaged that any cafe facility would be operated by a third party and not the Parish Council. So before we take discussions any further we would like to find out if this is what the community want and if there is suitable demand for a café, in order for it to be a viable operation.

We are therefore inviting comments from as many members of the Parish and visitors to the area as possible.

We would appreciate any views you may have on whether you would like to see a cafe in the park. If you would, is it a facility you yourself would use and how often?

What would you like to see provided? Alternatively if you feel a cafe facility would not be suitable we would be interested to hear why?

MAVERICK’S FESTIVE PICTURE OF THE OLD DYSON INDUSTRIES FACTORY IN STANNINGTON PUTS HIM ON SIXER’S FRONT PAGE. BY PHOEBE SEYMOUR. hristmas is a magical time – especially when seen through the eyes of a child. That’s why the Sixer team decided to invite schools in the area to draw a festive front cover for our December issue.

We asked pupils from primary schools in the area to design a cover with a festive theme and a splash of colour. It could include a nativity scene, Father Christmas, a local landmark or all three. The rest was up to their imaginations.

St Mary’s Church of England Academy in Walkley and Wharncliffe Side Primary School both put forward some strong contenders, but

in the end, it was a pupil from Bradfield Dungworth Primary School who wowed the judges.

To help us in our deliberations we called on an expert, and Bev Coukham owner of Curo Gallery on Middlewood Road, was only too happy to help. After much consideration, Maverick Kelley was crowned the winner for his festive depiction of the old Dyson Industries factory in Stannington.

Managing to incorporate both Father Christmas and a local landmark, 10-year-old Maverick had ticked two boxes on the judge’s design brief, as well as demonstrating artistic skills such as perspective, attention to detail @SixerRMC

and a simple but effective colour scheme.

“The Dyson chimney is iconic and relatable,” said Bev. “For me, this represents Sheffield 6. It brings back a lot of memories.

The monochrome colour scheme, with its splashes of green for the traditional Santa and rusty red for the chimney, is actually quite a contemporary thing to do and the scene gives me a sense of calm.

“Art doesn’t necessarily have to look perfect. It should be about the passion and enjoyment you get out of it and those two things come across in all these pictures.”

artwork has been framed and will appear in the window of Curo Gallery for all to see on the run-up to Christmas.

As part of this prize, Maverick and his father, Ashley Kelley, were invited to the gallery to choose a bespoke frame for the winning picture to be displayed in.

They selected a rust coloured mount and a black mount and a 40mm flat silver frame, which gorgeously complemented the colours in the picture. All of the other pictures on the wall at the Kelley family home are red and black, so the picture will make a welcome addition once it is given back to Maverick to keep.

“I had no idea he’d entered a competition,” said Ashley. “His head teacher, Mrs Adams called to tell me and when I told Maverick he’d won, he was literally jumping around the room. We’re really proud of him.”

Maverick is in Y6 and regularly enjoys drawing as part of his art classes with art teacher, Mrs Hibbard.

Though the Dyson factory has been closed for longer than he’s been alive, it is still a strong reminder of S6’s industrial past for all generations.

His choice to colour Santa in an oldfashioned green suit and sleigh however, was a happy accident.

“I’m really happy I won,” said Maverick. “I don’t know why I coloured it in green – I just liked it. I drew the Dyson chimney because I see it every day on my way to school. My friend Alfie Gosney said his grandad used to work there and cleaned it. I like art, but my favourite subject is PE.” Mrs Adams, head teacher at Bradfield Dungworth Primary School added: “We are delighted that Maverick has won the competition. We have a strong tradition of developing creativity at Bradfield Dungworth through art, music, dance and drama, as we know that children learn best when they are inspired, motivated and engaged.

“This competition was part of our rich, broad and balanced curriculum, which encourages pupils to develop their talents in all areas.”

Remarkable result PA JEWELLERY WERE RECENTLY ASKED TO TAKE ON AN UNUSUAL JOB – THE END RESULT WAS A GOLDEN FAMILY HEIRLOOM. he award-winning Commonside jewellers have a reputation in Sheffield as one of the city’s most esteemed jewellers. But even with their wealth of experience the job given to them by one customer still felt slightly intimidating.

They were tasked with melting the entirety of a customer’s family gold and making a new chain and other pieces, including a bangle, from it.

The customer’s mother and grandmother had passed away leaving her a mountain of gold rings and chains (10oz in total) that had ended up collecting dust as she wasn’t keen on wearing the pieces herself.

One of PA’s directors Ian Cookson said: “A lot of it couldn’t be worn even if she decided she did like it, because of the condition.”

After many discussions as to whether it was actually possible, given the amount of gold and the tools they had at their disposal, they decided to give it a crack, motivated by the fact the items were so precious to the customer.

Ian said: “I’ve never been faced with a bag of gold quite so big. Because it was her mother’s jewellery the importance of it being right was so high. It was a bit like, right now we’ve decided we can make it, how are we going to do it?”

That’s where PA Jewellery’s workshop manager Deborah Rootham came in.

Due to the amount of gold they were melting Deborah had to use new and innovative techniques in order to make the massive job work.

She describes it as feeling a bit like a blacksmith and said: “I was hitting it very hard! You get determined to do it though. It was about adapting.

“I had to melt it (the gold) in three lots because there was so much. Getting the metal to work from was actually the scariest, biggest bit.”

The full process took around eight weeks, and around 50-60 hours, to complete, and thanks to Deborah’s consummate skills in the workshop the end result is really quite remarkable. See for yourself in these pictures. @SixerRMC

HANNAH SANDERS SPOKE TO THE LARGER-THAN-LIFE DAME WHO IS APPEARING IN HIS TENTH PRODUCTION AT THE SHEFFIELD THEATRE. antomime Dame and comedy actor Damian Williams has his audiences rolling in the aisles and gasping for breath – so much so that he should come with a health warning.

His comic antics, perfect timing and great wit leave the audience laughing uncontrollably, and this year’s pantomime of Mother Goose promises to be no different.

Damian is celebrating his tenth production at the Lyceum Theatre, and this year they’ll be bringing the fun-filled tale to life for the first time in Sheffield.

Mother Goose is a tale of an old woman who meets a magical goose that lays golden eggs. She becomes rich beyond her wildest dreams, and has everything she ever wants apart from beauty and youth – will she be tempted by the offer of both in exchange for her prized feathered friend?

The creative team behind the production is Evolution, the same group who brought the smash hit Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, and, will not only see the return of Sheffield legend Damian, but Jake Canuso (ITV’s Benidorm), Cara Dudgeon (Somewhere in Time), and Andy Day (CBeebies’ Andy’s Dinosaur Adventures).

What can we expect from Mother Goose?

What do you think is the key to a good panto?

The panto this year is brand new. We have a new set, costumes and script and it’s great that it is something new for the Lyceum. I’ve seen some of the drawings and sketches – it is going to be spectacular. They’ve thrown a lot of things in to this – I think it might be our best yet.

A good story, one that keeps the children and adults entertained. You need to make sure the script provokes laughter and includes catchy songs. As it’s a family show it’s key to make sure there is something in there that appeals to everyone.

What do you enjoy most about panto?

I love the atmosphere in the theatre at Christmas, it’s always buzzing especially in Sheffield. The city has a really nice feel to it, and the audience brings so much excitement.

What appeals to you the most about the Dame?

The Dame is part of the audience, she gets away with murder and is constantly talking and engaging with everyone. It is the best comedy role and I just love playing her.

If you weren’t playing the Dame, what role would you like?

I quite enjoy playing the villain, as that is how I started. It is such a contrasting role to the Dame as you go for the “boo’s” and want @SixerRMC

Why do you think it is important to get the younger generation involved interested in the theatre?

It’s important to get young people back into the theatre to keep them thriving. The panto is sometimes someone’s first experience of live theatre, so hopefully it will encourage them to come back.

With lots of audience participation, impressive special events and brand new sets, Mother Goose promises to be an egg-cellent pantomime and perfect festive treat for the whole family.

LAWRENCE WHYTE HAS BEEN PLAYING THE DAME WITH THE STANNINGTON PLAYERS FOR 15 YEARS. THIS YEAR THEY RETURN WITH DICK WHITTINGTON. his December join the Stannington Players as they bring to life the tale of Dick Whittington’s journey to London to see if the streets are paved with gold.

This popular amateur dramatic society have been performing for over 60 years, first taking to the stage at the Festival of Britain celebrations in 1951. When Lomas Hall opened in 1955, the group settled in extending their repertoire to include a Christmas pantomime which has become an integral part of the festive celebrations in the local community, and this year promises to be just as magical.

Lawrence Whyte has been playing the Dame with the Stannington Players for 15 years, and, this time is taking on the role of Sarah the cook. He told us the secret to a good pantomime.

What can we expect from Dick Wittington?

You can expect a family orientated show, lots of singing, dancing and slapstick along with a good deal of audience participation.

What do you enjoy most about the panto?

I really enjoy the whole fun of it, it puts you in the Christmas spirit and it’s nice to be part of a community and to be giving something back.

What can we expect from the Dame this year?

The Dame is by far the best character, as she is big, loud, brash and rude – everything that you can’t be in normal life! She’s a very fruity character, and in the play she is lusting after men, desperately lonely but she is also quite cheery and sees the best in everybody.

What do you think is the key to a good pantomime?

Involving the audience so they become part of the show. I think also encapturing the magic for the children, as you can see them become enchanted by the story.

What does pantomime bring to the local community?

I think it brings a topicality as all the humour is focused on the local community. It brings the start of Christmas and the festivities, getting people in the spirit.

Why do you think it’s important to encourage people to get involved in pantomimes?

When children get involved in pantomime it’s a great way to develop their confidence, and I

think for some people it is very different experience from watching TV – it’s much more interactive and enjoyable.

So, come along, join in, sing along, shout out and just let your hair down and enjoy it.

The Real Junk Food Project (TRJFP) Sheffield promotes the value of this surplus food by reducing unnecessary waste – asking customers to ‘pay as you feel’ for groceries and meals which would otherwise have ended up going to landfill. Meaning you can choose to pay using money, time or skills, and there is no set amount or minimum donation.

café, acquired a warehouse and introduced their ‘fuel for school’ initiative - a project which involves delivering surplus stock to eight local schools, and teaching both children and parents about the values of healthy eating, seasonality and saving food.

“The time, skills and resources which have gone into food production are often ignored, as is the potential environmental harm of waste. Challenging this mind-set is the starting point to tackling food waste.

“Fuel for school provides parents with access to food where they previously didn’t have and instils a greater connection to types of food they may otherwise have not been familiar with.”

The food comes straight from the

supermarkets, thanks to a deal with local outlets including Ocado, Amazon and M&S, and is in the storeroom at the market almost straight away. And there is plenty of choice too, with boxes piled high and fruit and vegetables in abundance.

“Fresh produce forms a key part of the merchandise on offer at TRJFP and all the fruit and vegetables originate from supermarkets, restaurants, catering companies, allotments and growers.

“Our aim is to not only reduce food waste, but to help create a more sustainable food system and further alleviate food shortages.

Whilst re-educating our customers and building awareness that in fact, surplus products are perfectly fine to consume.”

Christmas has always been a time of great festivities and plenty, but the TRJFP know that a great deal of edible food is consequently thrown away. Which is why, on Christmas Eve, Sharehouse Market will open its doors to customers who can snap up chocolates, mince pies, Christmas puddings, turkeys, geese and more.

“Come along from midday – midnight, collect some food, contribute to the project and help us lead the way in reducing food waste all year round, not just at Christmas.”

As the amount of food they receive is virtually endless, TRJFP are always looking for more volunteers, whether that be running the market, sorting or picking up food, or working in the café.

“We’re only limited by the amount of people who can help. We offer roots to employment and can train you to work at a professional level. We also offer the opportunity to go on to work in the catering side of the business, where all work is offered at a living wage.”

FOODCYCLE’S VOLUNTEERS LEADING THE FIGHT AGAINST THE CITY’S FOOD POVERTY. Started in London by a group of students who were passionate about tackling the huge levels of food waste they saw in the city, FoodCycle combines volunteers, surplus food and spare kitchen spaces to create nutritious meals for people at risk of food poverty and social isolation.

United by the simple idea that food waste and food poverty should not co-exist, FoodCycle now has 29 project hubs across the UK – with four in Sheffield alone.

FoodCycle has a huge impact in the city – every week, they serve hot, healthy, three-course meals to tackle immediate hunger. Reclaiming food from supermarkets, local green grocers, bakeries and wholefood shops that would otherwise go to waste.

They create spaces for people to share food and friendship and are an important source of support for vulnerable people in Sheffield, helping to build communities where they may have otherwise broken down.

“We are a group of volunteers who take fresh food that would otherwise be thrown away and cook it into healthy, vegetarian meals,” said Kathy Walsh, volunteer PR, marketing and communications officer for Food Cycle Sheffield St Barts. “We have hubs in four areas of Sheffield: Sharrow, St Barts, Firth Park and Lowedges and we serve up over 100 meals every Wednesday.”

FoodCycle is all about empowering people through the cycle of progression, and the meals are open to anyone in the community, particularly those affected by food poverty or social isolation.

“Everyone is welcome to eat with us. The majority of our guests at Sheffield St Barts are elderly gentlemen who live on their own, usually because their wives have passed away. They may be suffering from ill health, @SixerRMC

mental health or depression, or they don’t know how to cook. And often they have noone to talk to, aside from during a FoodCycle meal.

“It’s here that they receive warmth and welcome – they come along and get a healthy meal, but also a chance to meet new people and ask about how the food was made. They can also take away extra portions and any surplus stock that hasn’t been utilised.

“There are too many success stories to mention them all – every week volunteers give support, welcome and friendship to vulnerable people. But one example of a guest who has been affected really positively is an elderly gentleman who took away enough food to make a curry for the whole week.”

As Christmas approaches and the weather gets colder, difficult times become even harder for many vulnerable people across Sheffield and beyond. And FoodCycle are always looking for more people to join them in the fight against food poverty.

From cooks to servers, they’re looking for a host of volunteers. Or if you have more time, you could work as a food co-ordinator securing surplus food from retailers.

“For people who feel socially isolated, missing out over the Christmas holidays can compound their loneliness, and as you may appreciate, it requires extra resources to ensure this doesn’t happen.

Dirty Stop Outs pay tribute to Bobby Knutt with new book The stars turned out in force to celebrate the launch of Neil Anderson’s new Dirty Stop Out’s Guide to Working Men’s Clubs book and to pay tribute to Bobby Knutt – the South Yorkshire star who rose out of clubland, but who tragically died recently.

A packed house at The Walkley (formerly Walkley Working Men’s Club) was treated to top ‘turns’ which included the Grumbleweeds, comedian Jimmy Carol, Stephanie King and the girls from Elysium, and in true clubland style, bingo.

Neil Anderson said: “Bobby Knutt was a true professional and he’d have wanted to ensure the event went ahead. The Grumbleweeds were a fitting headliner as they were the last act to tour with Bobby. He was a great supporter of the book project and it was fitting that the night was dedicated to his memory.”

Life Coach wins prestigious award Local life coach and fundraiser, Deborah Cundy, has won a prestigious International Coaching Award.

Deborah received the Coaching for a Cause Award and was nominated for the International Life Coach of the Year 2017.

The ceremony was held at The Latimer Estate in Buckingham.

The Coaching Academy is the leader in the UK coach training organisation, in which Deborah qualified as a personal performance coach in January 2015.

Deborah has made a significant contribution to her local community and amongst her many fundraising projects, has raised money for Weston Park Cancer Charity and Endeavour.

“To be shortlisted is something special, but to actually win a category is very prestigious,” said Deborah. “I feel very privileged to have won this amazing award this year.”
