i-ho, hi-ho... it’s off to work they go. Before the days of the regular bus service, this is how the Sheffield workforce went about their jobs. Has this photograph ever been a part of your family’s collection at home? Do you recognise the setting, can you tell when it was taken? Last month’s view was an early 20th century snapshot of Wharncliffe Craggs, once a popular place to visit from Sheffield and the surrounding villages, as well as Barnsley and Rotherham.

My name is Mary Offord I am a proud grandparent and my first grandchild attends Corner House. My daughter chose Corner House Nursery for our grandson because of its outstanding reputation and high standard of early education and care. Our friends had sent their children before and it is convenient and close to where we live. What I like most is that they have an excellent team of staff and also excellent security. This gives parents and grandparents great peace of mind. They have all been wonderful in supporting us and helping with our beautiful grandson’s development. We are extremely happy with his outstanding progress and this makes us feel so proud.

My name is Simon Greg

I am married with two teenag e daughters and I am a foster parent to a brother and sister. What I like most about Corner House is the friendly atmosphere and ext remely helpful staff. The nursery is in close proximity to my home and the staff always attend meetings with regards to my foster children. The key worker s provide one-to-one care for the little boy to suppor t his additional and individual needs.

SIXERWEDDINGS

THE LAST HURRAH From gastronomic tours to relaxing spa retreats, Fiona Barber looks at the changing face of the stag and hen do. he days of grooms-to-be waking up minus clothes or dignity and of brides-to-be decorated with learner plates, tiaras and garters are long gone. Over the last decade, traditional stag and hen parties – the debauched soirées of brides and grooms – have become

T

more sophisticated and less booze based. For ladies, the industry has even invented a new phrase for it: a swan party. With more hens and stags opting for a weekend of relaxation, or adventure and entertainment, instead of a night of drunken table dancing, the stakes

are higher than ever. Organising the event in question comes with immense pressure. So, if you are feeling the strain or are stuck for ideas, then read on for Sixer’s suggestions of how to keep your stags, hens, brides and grooms entertained on the trip of a lifetime.

Spas If relaxing in a Jacuzzi ‘til you wrinkle like a prune, being slathered in mud, and massaged until you’re knot-free is your idea of heaven – then a spa break is the answer. Despite Croatia being well known for its gorgeous coastlines and historical past, hidden away in the hills are numerous toplice – thermal spas or hot springs. Though popular year round, thermal spas are especially appropriate once the temperature falls, inviting you to seek relief from the cold in warm, health-boosting pools. When you’re tired of soaking, enjoy a healing mud treatment. This mineral-enriched mud, with a temperature of about 40 degrees, is thickly spread over the body and, after several minutes, is washed off with mineral water. If you’re not a fan of the mud there are plenty other massages and spa treatments to choose from. wellbeingescapes.com thehealthyholidaycompany.co.uk

Skiing For those looking for a bit of action – no not that kind – hitting the slopes could be the perfect way to spend the days, before returning to a luxurious chalet. It doesn’t matter if some members of the group have never skied before – classes are available to get to grips with the basic skills and the more experienced in the group can help others out – a fantastic way to exercise, bond and have fun. The French Alps have long been a favourite destination for British skiers looking for a luxurious ski holiday. With a fine choice of exclusive hotels sumptuous private chalets, excellent ski opportunities and facilities and stylish in-resort boutiques, it isn’t hard to see why. On a luxury skiing holiday to France, you can choose from a number of options. Whether you like your skiing to come with plenty of scope and accessibility, such as those of Les Trois Valees – the world’s largest skiing area – and L’ Espace Killy, or you prefer the more varied terrain of places like Chamonix and Megeve, you’ll not be disappointed. The laid-back continental atmosphere certainly adds to the appeal and in true French style the appreciation of fine cuisine and leisurely lunches play an important part of any visit to the region. crystalski.co.uk/luxury-ski-holidays elegantresorts.co.uk

Hire an island Finding your own slice of paradise for the perfect stag or hen party is no easy task. Locating a destination that offers plenty of adventure, cool drinks and a good serving of sunshine for a completely exclusive getaway is difficult – but what about hiring an island that is exclusively yours? Think Castaway in Tahiti, first-class luxury in the Bahamas, or enjoy the tropical climate of Florida. Arrive in style in a helicopter, snorkel with tropical fish, enjoy a range of water sports, play tennis. Do whatever you like really, because there’s just you, your party and a few helping hands – like your own private chef – to ensure this is the best holiday ever. stagweb.co.uk rent.privateislandsonline.com

Drink For lovers of fine wine, a tasting holiday could be just what you’re looking for. Choose a tour that includes special visits to the cellars of winemakers and be treated to private tastings with the winemakers themselves. Enjoy gourmet and regional food, deliciously matched to the wines. Experience dining as a private guest at a bodega, winery or renowned Bordeaux chateau – one of the ultimate experiences that you can have on a wine tour – and be guided by one of the world’s great experts to the ‘unvisitable’ domaines in Burgundy. In France visit the beautiful vineyards of Alsace as well as Rhone or Burgundy, and drink luxurious bubbles in Champagne. In Italy, visit top growers in Trentino, Sicily or Tuscany. Or perhaps you’d rather go to Chile, look at the origin of wine in Georgia, or explore Barolo’s cru vineyards on a vineyard walk in Piedmonte. Wherever you go, you’re sure to discover and experience a new side of wine you never knew existed. You’ll return home a master of smelling and swilling, and will be able to impress friends with your knowledge on food and wine matching.

Eat If food needs to take centre stage, a gourmet holiday – where you’ll discover how some mouth-watering ingredients are produced, taste regional specialities and explore the delights of gourmet restaurants – is ideal. Visit producers of local speciality food and gain an insight into how they are made or found. Grasp the rare opportunity to go truffle hunting in Piedmonte. As well as tasting the produce, don’t forget to buy some goodies to take home in order to be able to re-create some of these wonderful flavours in your own kitchens. At meals taste the best regional wines that match the food. Gourmet tours don’t necessarily mean an endless stream of high-class restaurants – it can equally be excellent fresh, local produce prepared in a traditional way. activegourmetholidays.com gourmetontour.com

SIXEREATING OUT

ON A WINNER Dining at the new-look Napoleons is a surefire bet, says Chris Wilson. asino rule number one: the house always wins. However, with the array of dining offers available at Napoleons in Owlerton, the odds, for once, are most definitely stacked in the punter’s favour. I’ve always been a big fan of the food in their sister restaurant on Ecclesall Road so it came as no surprise to discover that the S6 venue maintains the same high culinary standards – and following last year’s £2million refurb it looks particularly swanky too. As for those deals, there is a surefire winner on the menu to suit every occasion. For example, from Sunday to Thursday, a fixed price of £17 for two courses, and £19 for three, is a real steal. Then there is the popular Dine in Style offer, with three courses, a drink and a £5 gaming chip for £22. February brings the Winter Warmer – any two courses and a £5 chip for just £13.95; and for those who fancy a flutter where you genuinely can’t lose but might win big, all Thursday diners can play Spin to Win. Simply spin the roulette ball when you’ve finished dining and whatever number your ball lands on will be the percentage discount from your food bill. Regulars at the tables will know that could be up to 36 per cent. It could also be a big fat zero, but even then you don’t lose, so let’s just stay in a positive mindset here. All these deals don’t count for much if the food isn’t up to scratch of course – but we took the Dine in Style option and Napoleons definitely delivered. The menu changes monthly and, with six starters and six mains as well as a selection from the grill, there is certainly no shortage of choice. After a delicious selection of warm breads, my meal started with the Napoleons classic prawn cocktail; some recipes are too good to be messed around with. Juicy prawns, tangy cocktail sauce, crisp lettuce... simply delicious. My companion’s plaice goujons, with a smoked salmon tartar sauce, brought more big flavours; this was an excellent start to our meal. For mains my thick and juicy pork loin cutlet was beautifully complemented by sautéed apple and fennel in a grain mustard and cream sauce. Every mouthful was to be savoured. If my main course proved that the kitchen could tackle cheffy dishes with aplomb, across the table there was another example of ‘back to basics’ cuisine at its very best. From the grill, a very generous fillet steak was cooked medium-rare to order with handcut chips, grilled tomato, mushrooms and onion rings. Only steak and chips, you say? Maybe, but - done this well - it is impossible to resist. Desserts maintained the high standards. A white chocolate &

For those who prefer pudding to come with a guaranteed sugar rush, traditional parkin with vanilla ice cream and caramel sauce will not disappoint. With prompt and friendly service, the Napoleons dining experience is not to be missed. So how did we get on with those £5 gaming chips? Well, I’m still in the day job, so you can guess the rest.

SIXERWEDDINGS

THE ICING ON YOUR DAY As the centre-piece of your wedding, getting your cake right should be high on your list of priorities. We spoke to expert designer Rachel Edwards. rom finding the perfect dress to selecting the flowers and agonising over the seating plan, a lot of time and thought goes in to planning a wedding. And many things have changed since women first prepared a ‘bottom drawer’ for marriage. One of the key parts of the big day to undergo a transformation has to be the wedding cake. Traditionally a fruitcake with marzipan and royal icing, wedding cakes now come in a variety of shapes, sizes and colours with intricate designs and themes. Some couples choose to have two cakes (think ‘his and hers’ for mismatched tastes) and many now have a different type of cake for each tier with fruitcake, chocolate, lemon, coffee and vanilla to name just a few of the combinations. Once relegated to a corner of the room while everyone enjoyed the party, these beautiful works of sugar art now take centre stage at a wedding reception. It has become increasingly popular to follow the American trend of having a dessert table, where the cake is surrounded by other desserts such as cupcakes, cookies or sweets, which are intended to dress the cake and enhance the whole experience. But how do you design the perfect wedding cake? A professional cake designer usually starts with a consultation to tap in to the couple’s thoughts for the wedding. Award-winning cake designer Rachel Edwards said:“A couple will have usually already chosen a colour theme for their wedding and might have also organised the flowers and chosen a wedding dress, so they will have an idea of what they are looking for. “They usually bring a scrapbook or sketches with them or many like to show me their ideas on Pinterest. It is really important to get to know the couple so that you can create the right cake for them. I never repeat my designs so each cake is completely unique, which makes my job very interesting.” Rachel’s favourite clients are those who

Words: Hannah Pearson Pictures: www.shoot-lifestyle.co.uk have a general idea of what they would like but give her complete freedom to interpret their vision and bring it to life. “One of my favourite designs was a duck egg blue wedding cake with delicate beading. It really was something different. The colour was gorgeous and the cake was designed to be the bride’s ‘something blue’. It was also made in an unusual oval shape to resemble a vintage jewellery box. “For another wedding cake, I had my first attempt at making sugar orchids. They are so tricky but when you get them right they look stunning. People couldn’t believe they weren’t real flowers!” It is hard to believe that someone so talented stumbled across a career in cake design by mistake. Rachel initially trained as an interior designer but after having children she wanted a career where she could work from home. “I was at my son’s play group one afternoon when I noticed a cake decorating book on the side. I thought it would be a nice idea to make his birthday cake so I had a look and chose a Thomas the Tank Engine design. “I phoned The Sheffield College that same day and the following week I started a course in cake decorating! It was a dream come true.” With natural talent and an eye for design, Rachel completed the course with distinctions in cake decoration and sugar flowers and went on to gain an NVQ level three in patisserie. Before she knew it she had built up a successful business and enviable reputation. “I gain the majority of my business through recommendations, so trust and reputation is very important in this industry. I love what I do and I think that comes across. I want every cake to be perfect. I won’t sleep at night if I don’t think it’s right.” Rachel has been featured in national wedding publications, including photo

shoots in Cosmopolitan Bride and Brides magazines, and she has been commissioned to demonstrate new products and ideas for global company Dr. Oetker. She is proud to have worked closely with Chatsworth House for the past five years and she is one of their recommended wedding suppliers. Her cake designs even featured in the BBC documentary ‘Chatsworth’. People travel from near and far to get married in the Peak District and there is no better venue than the stunning stately home. One couple came all the way from Texas and Rachel was selected to make the cake of their dreams. “It was an extravagant ceremony, with the bride arriving in a horse-drawn carriage and the whole family travelled from America to stay in Chatsworth for a week. “Their cake was very intricate with lots of sugar ruffles and they had a dessert table with cake and cookie pops. “The bride had her heart set on having the wedding at Chatsworth and they were the first couple ever to be granted permission to hold their wedding breakfast and have their photos taken in the grand rooms.” Chatsworth House’s wedding fairs are also the perfect place for Rachel to showcase her exceptional talents. The next fair will take place on Saturday 28 February and Sunday 1 March, along with the launch of a new wedding marquee. Rachel has the honour of being chosen to exhibit a wedding cake in the marquee. Her cake will be decorated with a beautiful wild flower design as she is well-known for her exceptional sugar flowers. As her business has grown, Rachel now has her own shop Oh Sugar! By Rachel Edwards on Sharrow Vale Road, which sells all types of cake decorating supplies. And if you are interested in learning a new skill, Rachel holds cake decorating classes at Oh Sugar! Go to www.ohsugarsheffield.co.uk for more information.

SIXERINTERVIEW

PETER STRINGFELLOW He gained fame as Sheffield’s legendary ‘King of Clubs’ – but at 74, is he still a lothario in leopard-print? Adam Kay ventured to Soho to find out… see the mullet before I see anything else. I am in Soho to interview Peter Stringfellow. It is 2.52pm and the doors of his Angels nightclub are barred shut – it will be six hours before they open to punters eager to see female flesh and drink expensive drinks. But I knock and explain who I am, and the receptionist lets me in. She tells me to take a seat, motioning to a table to the left of the entrance. Around it is a red velvet throne and two chairs upholstered in leopard-print. Obviously! After a short wait I’m ushered through the club (more red velvet; even more leopard-print) to the office at the back. It is relatively cramped, but sleek; like the headquarters of a trendy advertising firm. In the middle is a separate office, partitioned off from the rest with glass panels. There is a frosting effect across the centre of the glass, meaning I can’t see the face of who’s inside. But lo, what’s that poking over the top? Why, it’s that unmistakable silver mane!

I

* We all think we know Peter Stringfellow: the hair, the leopardprint, the scores of nubile girls in his clubs and on his arm. But he is 74 now – what is he really like these days? How

much of his lothario persona is actually true to life? “Absolutely none,” he laughs. “I have no leopard-skin G-strings. Damn!” He is, he claims, a reformed character: he doesn’t drink (apart from the occasional glass of pinot grigio with food), and is happily married with a baby daughter (more about that later). His only interests nowadays are his family and his business. Indeed, it’s easy to forget that Peter Stringfellow is, above and beyond everything else, a hugely successful businessman (he prefers ‘entrepreneur’). He has made millions from his nightclubs – first the music venues in his native Sheffield which played host to the likes of The Beatles and Jimi Hendrix, now his Soho nightspots where ‘adult entertainment’ is the order of the day. His has been a long and lucrative career, and it shows no sign of stopping any time soon. In fact in his seventies Peter is striking out anew once more, with a plan to expand the Stringfellows brand across Europe. “I’m in a recognised, understandable licensing deal, which is the future for me,” he says. The first of these new branded clubs opened in Paris in late 2014. “These countries have become more capitalistic and more westernised than they’ve ever been. So the [Stringfellows] name, in my opinion, fits in all the capital cities: Prague, for instance, Budapest…”

It’s a bold move, but then Peter Stringfellow is no shrinking violet. He may have put the boozing and womanising behind him, but the energy, the megawatt charisma for which he’s famous, remains firmly in place. During our chat, he punctuates most sentences with a hearty, capital-letter laugh (“HA HA HA!”), and regularly breaks into song, and impressions of the many celebrities he knows (his Janet Street-Porter is hilarious). Celebrities loom large in Peter’s world. The wall of his little office is filled with pictures of him hangin’ out with the stars, at his clubs and elsewhere. He continually drifts off from conversation to point them out and tell me the story behind them. Princess Diana, Charlie Sheen (“we forged a very good friendship, but we only knew each other when we were drunk!”), Ginger Rogers, Simon Cowell (“good old Simon, comes to the club a lot, fabulous guy”)… the famous names come thick and fast – so many, clanging around me like anvils, that I worry the floor will fall through. * Peter James Stringfellow was born in Sheffield in 1940, growing up in the suburb of Pitsmoor (“When people say ‘what was Pitsmoor like?’… the name described it quite adequately. HA HA HA HA!”). The family were poor, he says: their house was cold and cramped; the only toilet was outdoors. His memories of Sheffield are fond, though: he still has family in the city, and visits when he gets the chance. The young Peter struggled at school, due to what was later diagnosed as mild dyslexia. As a result, the first signs of his extrovert persona emerged. He says: “I found myself trying to be a joker in the class to lift myself up from being the dumbest kid in the class to a little bit more than that.” He left school at 15 and took on a series of odd jobs, including cinema projectionist and apprentice mechanic, before his father persuaded him to sign up for the merchant navy. Peter sailed the world, his eyes opened wide by the gleaming skyscrapers and well-to-do citizens of New York. Peter’s nascent Jack-the-lad attitude was soon to land him in trouble, changing his life’s direction in the process. Now back in Sheffield and working for an upholstery firm, he began stealing carpets from the company’s warehouse to sell on the side for extra profit. He was promptly discovered and arrested, and served six weeks at Her Majesty’s pleasure as a result. After being released from prison Peter struggled to find work, but an outing to Chesterfield with younger brother Geoffrey provided the inspiration for a new career path. Attending a performance by Johnny Tempest and the Cadillacs, the elder Stringfellow felt he could make a success of putting on gigs of his own. Shortly after, he began laying the foundations of his nightclub empire, and set about building for himself the life he’d first glimpsed during that merchant navy trip to New York.

Sheffield and beyond. First was the Black Cat, in St Aidan’s church hall on City Road. Then came the Blue Moon, and in the midsixties the King Mojo, which was later given a very groovy psychedelic paint job. As a promoter and booker, he brought so many iconic acts to the city that it’d be quicker to name the ones that didn’t play for him. The Kinks, The Who (personal favourites of his), Tina Turner and Elton John are just a few of the ones who did. The seventies saw an expansion into other cities – first Leeds, then Manchester – and then in 1980 a move to London, with the opening of Stringfellows in Covent Garden. Stringfellows quickly became the place to see and be seen, thanks largely to Peter’s reputation from his Sheffield days. The stars who had played for him years before – Marvin Gaye, Elton – stopped by the new club whenever they were in town. Stringfellows was instantly transformed into the latest hip celebrity hangout, and Peter’s fame was assured. Given Peter’s love of the US, sealed in his merchant navy days, it was inevitable he would open clubs across the pond. Soon enough he did, and the Stringfellows clubs in New York, Miami and Beverly Hills were great successes, frequented by Hollywood stars and music legends alike. But the good times in America weren’t to last. An economic crash there at the end of the eighties forced Peter to close his stateside clubs – and allegedly led to an unsavoury run-in with the Mafia. He retreated to England with the tail of his mullet between his legs. >>>

“I’m still the only guy that’s had a club in Sheffield, Leeds, Manchester, London, Miami, New York and Beverly Hills. Nobody else has done that.”

* “I’m called ‘King of Clubs’,” says Peter. “I’m still the only guy that’s had a club in Sheffield, Leeds, Manchester, London, Miami, New York and Beverly Hills, and owned all of them. Nobody else has done that.” Peter’s early clubs have become the stuff of legend, in

SIXERINTERVIEW Peter bounced back, of course. And it was another eyeopening experience in the States which helped him turn his fortunes back around: a visit to a gentlemen’s club. “A girl had come up to me at the side of the stage and said ‘Can I dance for you?’ I said ‘Sure!’” he says. “She said ‘It’s ten dollars a dance.’ ‘Fine, I’ll have one.’ Three hundred and fifty dollars later, I was still giving her ten dollar bills. HA HA HA HA HA!” Ever the entrepreneur, Peter felt that ‘adult entertainment’ was another venture he could make work for him, and he soon introduced it to Stringfellows in London. It was an instant success, and before long he became the first club owner to secure a fully nude licence from Westminster Council. Gentlemen’s clubs will always be a controversial topic, with many (including this writer) feeling they are exploitative and promote sexual objectification. For his part, Peter insists his clubs are thoroughly classy, aimed at highflyers rather than horny teenagers. He also says the girls who perform in his venues are not ‘strippers’ or ‘lap-dancers,’ but rather ‘entertainers.’ *

“I have been ecstatically happy many, many times in my life, but I can’t honestly say I’ve been any happier than I am now.”

Of course, the move into adult entertainment did nothing to alter the public perception of Peter – based on years of appearances in the tabloid columns – as a sleazy, silk-shirted womaniser. Neither did his propensity for dating dancers from his clubs, most of them half his age. But he’s different now, he says. It’s true that today, dressed in casual trousers and a polo shirt, he doesn’t look much like the lothario one imagines (although I must report that all the buttons on the shirt are undone to reveal a thatch of chest hair). And while cynics rolled their eyes in 2009 when he married Bella Wright – a ballet dancer some 42 years his junior – Peter insists it isn’t history repeating itself. “I have been ecstatically happy many, many times in my life, but I can’t honestly say I’ve been any happier than I am now,” he says. “I have a 16-month-old daughter who is everything, and my gorgeous wife who I love – she loves me too, for some unknown reason! We’re a great little team.” His decision to become a father again at 72 (he has a daughter, Karen, and a son, Scott, from previous marriages) attracted further snorts of derision. Again, Peter has a rebuttal to the critics. “I’ve enjoyed my family life so much in the past I wanna do it again,” he shrugs. “People who have something against that probably say ‘Well, it’s not very fair because you’re going to die and leave your little girl with no father.’ But she’ll have her mother, and she’ll have a memory of a doting father.” He puts great emphasis on the word ‘doting’. *

Peter Stringfellow can be a difficult man to read. For one thing, there are those meandering anecdotes. And while his answers certainly aren’t rehearsed, his 50 years in showbiz mean he knows how to talk to journalists like me and give the answers he thinks I want (he makes sure to frequently address me by name, and will often preface the anecdotes with “Here’s a story for you,” as if to make sure I get it down). But when talking of his love for his new family, he seems completely sincere. He tells me we have to wrap the interview

up because he’s cooking a dinner for his wife and some friends later. These days, it seems, Peter Stringfellow is more domestic god than love god. Many of the questions I’d wanted to ask – has he really, as he’s claimed in the past, slept with 2,000 women? Why, oh why the obsession with leopard-print? – are sadly left unanswered. But there’s time for just one more: would he ever retire? “The answer to that one, Adam, is retire from what? To what?” he says. “In a way I am retired.” He explains how he used to spend every night in one of his clubs: Friday in London, to New York by Concorde, then the next week Miami, the next day Beverly Hills. His life now is comparatively sedate: he splits his time between London and his property in Mallorca. “I would be a lot richer today had I not enjoyed my business so much,” he says. “Richard Branson jumps out of an aeroplane every now and again, but basically he’s a businessman. Me? No. I wanna be onstage with these stars, I wanna meet up with them, I wanna be Peter Stringfellow.” And having spent an afternoon in his company, I think I wanna be Peter Stringfellow too. I may not approve of his line of work, but the man himself is friendly, hungry for success even at 74, and a total hoot to talk to. And when I think about his life nowadays, with his wife and child and his millions in the bank, it’s all rather appealing. So as I walk back out into Soho, I run my fingers through my imaginary mullet, and unbutton my shirt just a little bit further than I had before. www.stringfellows.co.uk

PlumbRite plumbers don’t have this problem, as they can guarantee there will always be someone ready to answer your call even if they are out on a job. Once the call is answered, an operator can provide each customer with advice on their issue and assure them that their message will be passed on to the next available plumber in the area. Dean Ellis, a 24-hour plumbing engineer for PlumbRite South Yorkshire, has always wanted to have his own business. He said: “I like being my own boss. I’ve always worked very hard for someone else and decided it was about time I started working hard for myself. As it’s my own business, I take a lot of pride in my work.” Dean takes a vigilant approach when it comes to plumbing, putting the PlumbRite motto – Get it done rite! – into action. “I make sure I get it done right first time,” said Dean. “I don’t rush jobs – it’s important to dedicate the time necessary and use all the correct parts.” Dean is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week for emergency plumbing, tackling plumbing issues from a leaking tap to a whole drainage system. He can also design, supply and fit complete bathrooms and kitchens, including the tiling. It is the multitude of potential problems that make the job interesting for Dean. The traditional Chinese art of acupuncture can treat a wide range of illnesses and ailments, from back pain to skin problems.

or anyone with recurring health issues, finding a treatment that eases or solves the problem is a lifechanger. Acupuncture has long been recognised as a means of pain relief, but it is also used to treat a wide range of illnesses, with a focus on improving the overall wellbeing of the patient, rather than isolating the treatment of specific symptoms. This ancient system of healing has been practised in China and other eastern countries for thousands of years. According to traditional Chinese medicine philosophy our health is dependent on the body’s energy – also know as Qi (pronounced chee) – moving in a smooth and balanced way through a series of channels in the body. Qi consists of equal and opposite qualities Yin and Yang, and an imbalance of these can result in illness. By inserting fine needles into the channels of energy, an acupuncturist can stimulate the body’s own healing response and help restore its natural balance. The idea of having needles stuck in to various body parts can be – to say the least – a bit off-putting. But acupuncture needles are actually very fine, like human hair and the sensation is sometimes described as a tingling or dull ache. Often patients hardly feel a thing – so there’s really nothing to worry about. While acupuncture has become more popular in the western world in recent years, many acupuncturists are only trained in a westernised version of Chinese medicine and not the full traditional Chinese medicine theory, which takes years to learn. Shumin Xu is the real deal. Based in Hillsborough, she studied

traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) for five years where she became a qualified TCM doctor. Shumin then worked in three TCM hospitals in China and also established her own clinic before moving to the UK in 2006. Here, she worked for established Chinese medicine store Dr and Herbs and completed a masters degree in acupuncture and Chinese medicine at Middlesex University. After being granted permanent residency in the UK she decided to set up her own clinic, called Ayun. With 24 years experience in the industry, Shumin is a committed practitioner of Chinese medicine and uses her knowledge and methods to treat all kinds of health problems such as arthritis, neck, back and shoulder pain, sleeping difficulties, diabetes, anxiety and skin problems like psoriasis and eczema. The benefits frequently include more than just relief from a particular condition. Many people find that it leaves them feeling calmer, more energised and happier. Shumin has a special interest in helping women with infertility problems and says that the treatments she offers can improve IVF results because it changes the body’s condition into a more positive state. Five one-hour sessions of acupuncture costs £125 and ten sessions is £220. A single treatment costs £30. As well as treatments like acupuncture and Chinese herbs, Shumin also offers cupping, which is used to treat back pain. To find out if Shumin can help with your problem call 0114 233 7287. Martyn Kemp Opticians suggests ways of reducing the harmful effects of excessive blue light Martyn Kemp Opticians (MKO) has highlighted ways to reduce the damaging effects on eyes of excessive exposure to the blue light that is emitted by the sun and artificial light sources. Research has shown that exposure to too much blue light, particularly in the evening, from LEDs, computers, mobile phones, some TVs, fluorescent tubes and low energy light bulbs can cause migraines, sleeping problems and slight depression. Prolonged exposure can also contribute to the formation of cataracts and macular degeneration (MD), Advice on beating the blues: both of which are prevalent Martyn Kemp in older people. There are two possible solutions. One is to wear spectacles that block blue light. In one study, people who wore them for three hours before bedtime reported major improvements in their sleep patterns and reduced the troubling after-effects of cataract operations. Martyn Kemp said: “In the past, blue-blocking lenses have had to be tinted, but now MKO can provide a clear-coated lens to a patient’s own spectacle prescription that blocks out blue light and UV, giving the best eye protection possible.” The alternative is to take a diet supplement called Macushield, which builds up the pigment that protects the eye’s macular – the part of the eye providing clear and detailed central vision. Macushield tablets are available at MKO practices. Visit www.mko.co.uk for more information.

Bird trainer Heather is off on a mission to help save the macaws of Costa Rica Heather Scott, head bird trainer at Sheffield’s Tropical Butterfly House, will soon be setting off to Costa Rica to help save one of the world’s most endangered parrots by working with the Ara Project. The charity is dedicated to ensuring the future of great green macaws and scarlet macaws in Costa Rica. Both of these species’ numbers have been devastatingly reduced as a result of capture for the pet trade, hunting and deforestation. Heather will be working voluntarily for the Ara Project for six weeks at their breeding centre in Punta Islita. Heather and her team have raised £1,500 in donations for the Ara Project by selling wristbands during the animal and bird shows and two miniature macaws have played a big part too. Ché and Esteban are three-yearold Hahn’s macaw brothers with a special talent – they have been trained to gently take coins from audience members who wish to make a donation. Alfie, the greenwinged macaw also ‘plays dead’ during displays to ensure the message hits home about the potential loss of a parrot species and how tragic it would be. The Tropical Butterfly House is open daily, year round and is located just five minutes from the M1, junction 31. See www.butterflyhouse.co.uk to plan your visit.

Be seen and stay safe, says Safer Roads Partnership With bad weather once again forecast for the region, the South Yorkshire Safer Roads Partnership is urging drivers to be prepared, to slow down and drive according to the road conditions. Snow, ice and spray on the roads mean that, in addition to poor visibility, stopping distances increase and drivers should be prepared for the unexpected on the road. Make sure your vehicle is fully serviced and tyres have good tread depth before setting out on winter journeys. Ensure that fluids especially windscreen wash (to the correct concentration to prevent it freezing), anti-freeze and oil are topped up and clear snow and ice off windows, mirrors, lights and the roof, even for short journeys. Drivers should allow extra time for journeys, including time to properly de-ice their vehicle before setting off. When driving, keep a safe distance from the vehicle in front and be patient with other road users. The South Yorkshire Safer Roads Partnership is asking drivers to: n Be informed - check traffic and weather updates

www.regionalmagazine.co.uk

n Be prepared - check your vehicle is ready for winter and always carry an emergency kit including warm and waterproof clothing n Be aware - in severe weather, Council and Highways Agency winter teams need the time and space to do their job n Be wise - conditions may change, drive with care and full attention The South Yorkshire Safer Roads Partnership is also reminding pedestrians, runners and cyclists to ‘be bright, be seen’ and make themselves more visible to drivers. Pedestrians and cyclists are advised to wear brightly coloured or fluorescent clothing in daylight and wear reflective gear when it’s dark. Small accessories such as clip-on reflectors, arm bands or stickers significantly improve your visibility. For those who received MP3 players or iPods for Christmas, don’t be tempted to use these when walking, cycling or running as they can be a distraction when crossing the road. If you would like road safety advice, visit www.lifewise999.co.uk/road-safety or email roadsafetyactivity@southyorks.pnn.police.uk.

PROMOTIONTHE NAGS HEAD INN

Words: Hannah Pearson

With its roaring fires, fine food and great selection of ales, you are assured of a traditional pub welcome at the Nags Head. he Nags Head Inn has been at the heart of the local community since the 1800s. And while we may be well into the 21st century now, this popular Loxley pub has retained its traditional feel. If it’s hearty refreshments and a warm welcome you’re after, you’ll be sure to find them here. Owned by Bradfield Brewery since 2008, the Nags Head Inn is a haven of roaring open fires and great beers. The pub serves as the official tap for the brewery, so you’ll find a range of Bradfield’s award-winning ales on the bar. Prices are pleasingly old-fashioned too, with all hand-pulled beers costing just £2 a pint. Four of their core beers are available on tap – Yorkshire Farmer, Farmers Pale Ale, Farmers Blonde and Farmers Brown Cow – along with two of their current specials. The charming pub has recently had a makeover and is now even more welcoming than before. The bar has been spruced up, there is new seating, the toilets have been refurbished, wood flooring has been laid and there are cosy log burners in the stonework fireplaces. The separate dining room – now called the snug – has also been redecorated, making it a popular space to enjoy a meal.

T

RIP Charlie It is with deep sadness that the Gill family announce the passing of Charlie – one of their Percheron heavy horses. Charlie came to the brewery on semi-retirement in April 2009 having spent his life competing in shows and winning countless competitions. After settling in, he did the odd delivery run to the Nags Head, led the Stannington Carnival parade and in July 2013 he donned his harness for the last time to take a bride to Bradfield Church on her wedding day. Since then he spent his time in the fields eating grass and rolling in the mud. A true gentle giant. RIP Charlie.

62 SIXER MAGAZINE

The Nags Head is famous for its hearty, home cooked food and the pieand-a-pint offer is a steal. Purchase a small pie for £5.75 or a large one for £7.75 and receive a free pint of Farmers Ale with your meal. If you enjoy a walk around the beautiful Loxley Valley at the weekend, call in to the pub between 10am-11.30am for a full English breakfast. Traditional roast dinners are also on offer on Sundays, from 12pm-5pm, with a choice of beef or pork sourced from local farms. Never a dull moment at the Nags Head, landlady Megan Packham has been busy organising plenty of events to entertain the locals. Quiz night takes place every Thursday from 9.15pm and there are theme nights on the last Thursday of every month. February’s theme will be a patriotic night of British classics, while March will celebrate the best pies with some tasty steak and stilton. The pub’s snooker room is as popular as ever too, with a weekly tournament every Sunday from 9pm. One mile up the road, things are busier than ever at Bradfield Brewery. 2015 marks the brewery’s ten-year anniversary, so John Gill and his family are organising some special celebrations to commemorate the milestone. The imminent arrival of four 60-barrel fermenting tanks (that hold approximately 17,500 pints of beer each) will significantly increase the brewery’s capacity – just in time for brewing their summer beers. For fans of the famous Belgian Blue, there will soon be a special summer beer with a similar taste. Whether you’re after a hearty homemade meal, a tasty pint or a good time with your friends and family, the Nags Head Inn is always worth a visit. PROMOTIONFUNMEFIT

FunMefFit is moving forward in 2015 to build its online community sports network and help promote healthy activities for everybody

Kate Hill and 2014 Britain’s Strongest Man winner Eddie Hall

HS guidelines state that to stay healthy or to improve health, adults need to do two types of physical activity each week: aerobic and muscle-strengthening activity. We all know that exercise is beneficial – both physically and mentally – but for beginners, those that don’t like the gym, or lack the motivation to go it alone, it can be difficult finding a way to fit in those all-important 150 minutes of exercise a week. Kate Hill recognised this, and so three years ago she set up FunMeFit, a free online membership community and directory for businesses, sports clubs, community groups and individuals promoting health, sports and community activities, events and projects. Despite achieving a degree in journalism at Sheffield University, Kate says she preferred community-focused writing and setting up events for local people. “I have always loved sport and had a stint with the University of Sheffield Women's Football Team. I set up a small group called Girls Wanna Have Fun Too in 2006, where I posted meeting dates on a Sheffield Forum and would get inundated with messages from young women wanting to get involved.” The idea for FunMeFit occurred to Kate in 2010 when she saw a gap in the market for a network showing people what was available locally for sport, health and social meetings. Over the last four years, Kate has built up FunMeFit around working at Hill and Co Accountants in Hillsborough with the help of creative agency Foster and Scott, who designed and set up the website. As well as providing an online community, FunMeFit can also offer help with funding, sponsorship and social media. They work alongside growing networks like the MoveMore project in Sheffield and have even launched their own

N

community TV channel on YouTube (FMFTV), which they use to review a wide range of local sports and visit community projects and businesses. When her business partner Andy Picken came on board in 2014, they also began to offer business support to companies, as a way to generate revenue from the website. “We provide marketing, PR, social media and copywriting services and have always received great feedback for the work we do – however small it might be. It helps to give groups a voice and that’s important.” FunMeFit now has a membership base of almost 400 local and national companies and organisations and 2015 looks set to be a year of big advancements. Kate says: “We like to encourage the idea that, together, we are all stronger as a community. And, as the majority of our members share the same ethos that they want to help improve the health, well-being and social involvement of the communities they serve, it makes sense for us all to help one another where possible.” Members can connect with others across the community and many have gone on to meet up and help one another – making close, beneficial relationships. To further support community events and members who need coverage, FunMeFit are looking to appoint an apprentice in the coming months and hope that more people will be encouraged to join the free network, whether they run a group or not. If you would like more information about FunMeFit, e-mail Kate or Andy on info@funmefit.com or to join, go to www.funmefit.com/register. You can also find them on Facebook and Twitter @FunMeFit.

Ian and Andy provided an excellent service throughout the installation of my new patio, including helping with the planning and design. They kept to the schedule, but were also flexible enough to incorporate some changes during the work phase. I am very pleased with the end product and would certainly recommend and use them again in future.

We couldn’t be more pleased with our new extensions. Johnson & Phillips were very helpful throughout the build. The quality and workmanship exceeded our expectations. We wouldn’t hesitate in recommending them.

PROMOTIONDARWENT BUILDING PLASTICS

Security, good looks and great prices are what makes the range of quality composite doors supplied by Darwent Building Plastics stand out. ith almost three decades of experience, Ian Oxley of Darwent Building Plastics has built an impressive reputation in Sheffield for providing high quality composite doors, windows, locks, soffits, fascias and conservatories. A recent spate of burglaries has seen demand for Ian’s snapsecure locks and handles soar, as homeowners look for the best possible way to protect their home against intruders. An ordinary lock can be broken in less than 30 seconds and for seasoned criminals, who have become adept at breaking barrel locks quickly and quietly, it can be even faster. The double bar in the snap-secure lock prevents them from being picked, pumped or snapped, meaning you and your family can sleep soundly without fear of intrusion. All Darwent Plastics doors are fitted with these locks and Ian also fits them to existing doors for just £50 plus VAT – almost half the price that other companies are charging. Ian’s other star product is the composite door, which has quickly become one of the most popular ways to achieve a high quality appearance with sound security and maximum insulation. With the look and feel of a traditional wooden door, but with the added benefits of modern UPVc technology (including triple glazing and thermal properties), they’re a great addition to the home. Darwent Building Plastics is one of Sheffield’s most popular providers of composite doors, with prices starting at just £650. And Ian, who hails from Stannington, is pleased to report that his showroom in Shalesmoor – which opened in 2014 – has enjoyed a great first year. “If you’re thinking of buying a new door, come down to the showroom, which is open every Saturday, to see the variety of composite doors in situ,” says Ian. “You can have a play around with them and see in person all the benefits they have to offer.

W

76 SIXER MAGAZINE

It’s much better than choosing your door from a brochure as you can see exactly what you’ll be getting up close.” Also on display at the Shalesmoor showroom is a range of UPVc windows. These energy-saving windows are available in a huge range of colours and styles including white, oak and rosewood frames so, whatever your tastes, they blend seamlessly with your home’s current aesthetic. Ian is both City and Guilds trained and FENSA registered. It is important that anyone within the building trade is fully insured to work on a property and, even though accidents seldom happen, Darwent Building Plastics is covered for every eventuality up to £2million. Having made a name for himself as one of the leading suppliers and installers of UPVc for the home improvement market, Ian insists that his prices cannot be beaten by any company who offers the same quality materials and the same high standard of workmanship. For more information about the products available at Darwent Building Plastics, pop in to the Shalesmoor showroom or call Ian on 0800 849 6730. Building work, electrics, plastering, decoration, fitting, flooring – this is a one-stop-shop.” But just because Scott and his team can perform complete renovations, that doesn’t mean that they have to. CKB understand that not everybody can afford top to bottom renovations at this moment in time so are more than happy to work on anything from replacing a single kitchen unit upwards. “I can do eight metres of worktop and a new sink and tap for £950 or a whole kitchen or bedroom – so people can have whatever they can budget for,” said Scott. “And if you have your own electrician or plumber that you would like to use then you are more than welcome to do so. We will do as little or as much as you wish.” A feature of CKB which sets it apart from many of its competitors is that it manufactures everything on site, giving it a bespoke service. This means it can cater to any needs or desires. Scott employs a close team of dedicated workers including a registered electrician, and plumber, as well as qualified plasterer, brick layers and window fitters, who are all contracted to CKB. Gloss doors particularly in white and cream are in vogue at the current time. This gives a room a fresh appearance and Scott has seen requests for this design boom.

Consequently Scott is offering deals on an Astro white and cream gloss – check in at the showroom or give him a call for more deals. Scott doesn’t believe in such gimmicks as offering customers ten per cent off their total bill though. “These are often used to pull the wool over people’s eyes. I offer competitive prices from the word go.” Should you contact CKB, Scott will come out to view your home for a free appointment. The visit normally lasts for an hour depending on job size. “I don’t give quotes off-the-cuff. I am meticulous when it comes to pricing, so post-appointment I will go through everything and provide an accurate, itemised and fair quote.” Scott is the initial point of contact for customers and he not only designs his work but does the fitting too. Once Scott has committed to a job he dedicates all his time to it from inception to completion. He guarantees that he will not be working on multiple projects at one time and is even willing to turn down work to be able to do this. “My customers like to know that I will always be there and that they have my undivided attention. That is the least they deserve and will get when they come to me.” As such his customers can contact him 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Doors and worktops are guaranteed for a decade but for extra peace of mind Scott ensures that payment comes in instalments and that the full fee is not paid until the job has been completed satisfactorily. For a company that will provide your home with undivided, specialist and bespoke attention, give CKB a call today!
