Shop ‘til you drop... there’s a buzz of activity around the independent outlets that ensure there is never a dull moment on Middlewood Road.

Stylish send-off... when the bride wears a dress designed by Ian Stuart, she is sure to feel extra special on her wedding day.

Making waves... local band Fairbarn are rapidly picking up a large and enthusiastic cult following. Could they be Sheffield’s next big thing?

Ken’s crusade... the king of Chinese cuisine, Ken Hom, did more than anyone to introduce Wok cooking to British homes, and his passion remains undimmed.

Memorial concert... Cantamus Senior Ensemble will perform at Wisewood Methodist Church in the memory of Heather Hoyland, who was one of Bradfield Festival of Music’s staunchest supporters.

FEATURES: 20 Go independent A hand-picked selection of the best shopping Middlewood Road has to offer.

34 Bold and beautiful Despite his imaginative creations having taken the bridal market by storm, there’s much more to come from designer Ian Stuart, says Stephanie Burns.

SIXERDO YOU REMEMBER? t’s time for another stroll down memory lane and one of the first thing we notice is that for the ladies of this particular era, the wearing of white pinafores over their long dark dresses seems to be pretty much compulsory. There’s a baby in a sturdy looking pram, and a horse and cart too, presumably making some sort of delivery. It’s a local scene, so can anyone enlighten us as to where and when the photograph was taken? The photograph was supplied by Sixer regular Barry Couldwell. He also gave us the snapshot of carefree young men that we showed last month. It was taken in Brick Row, Worrall.

COMPLETE KITCHEN & BEDROOM SOLUTIONS

From a replacement worktop to a whole new kitchen or bedroom, there’s no job too small for CKB.

H

aving traded out of Middlewood Road for over six years now, the Sheffield public are becoming well aware of the high quality, bespoke service on offer at Complete Kitchens and Bedroom Solutions. Owned by Scott Webster, CKB offer a complete kitchen and bedroom service alongside the capability of anything from removing walls to building extensions. Scott said: “When you come to us you really do get everything. Building work, electrics, plastering, decoration, fitting, flooring – this is a one-stop-shop.” But just because Scott and his team can perform complete renovations, that doesn’t mean that they have to. CKB understand that not everybody can afford top to bottom renovations at this moment in time so are more than happy to work on anything from replacing a single kitchen unit upwards. “I can do eight metres of worktop and a new sink and tap for £950 or a whole kitchen or bedroom – so people can have whatever they can budget for,” said Scott. “And if you have your own electrician or plumber that you would like to use then you are more than welcome to do so. We

CKB

will do as little or as much as you wish.” A feature of CKB which sets it apart from many of its competitors is that it manufactures everything on site, giving it a bespoke service. This means it can cater to any needs or desires. Scott employs a close team of dedicated workers including a registered electrician, and plumber, as well as qualified plasterer, brick layers and window fitters, who are all contracted to CKB. Gloss doors particularly in white and cream are in vogue at the current time. This gives a room a fresh appearance and Scott has seen requests for this design boom. Consequently Scott is offering deals on an Astro white and cream gloss – check in at the showroom or give him a call for more deals. Scott doesn’t believe in such gimmicks as offering customers ten per cent off their total bill though. “These are often used to pull the wool over people’s eyes. I offer competitive prices from the word go.” Should you contact CKB, Scott will come out to view your home for a free appointment. The visit normally lasts for an hour depending on job size. “I don’t give

quotes off-the-cuff. I am meticulous when it comes to pricing, so post-appointment I will go through everything and provide an accurate, itemised and fair quote.” Scott is the initial point of contact for customers and he not only designs his work but does the fitting too. Once Scott has committed to a job he dedicates all his time to it from inception to completion. He guarantees that he will not be working on multiple projects at one time and is even willing to turn down work to be able to do this. “My customers like to know that I will always be there and that they have my undivided attention. That is the least they deserve and will get when they come to me.” As such his customers can contact him 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Doors and worktops are guaranteed for a decade but for extra peace of mind Scott ensures that payment comes in instalments and that the full fee is not paid until the job has been completed satisfactorily. For a company that will provide your home with undivided, specialist and bespoke attention, give CKB a call today!

Ian Stuart’s best-selling ‘flower bomb’ dress

BOLD AND BEAUTIFUL

Despite his imaginative creations having taken the bridal market by storm, there’s much more to come from designer Ian Stuart, says Stephanie Burns.

‘W

himsical, theatrical, flamboyant’. In three words, globally renowned bridal designer Ian Stuart perfectly sums up his signature style, a style that has been pored over by brides the world over for well over a decade and continues to attract great acclaim from both customer and peer. Anyone who has taken even a passing interest in fashion or bridalwear will be familiar with Ian’s creations. Boldly taking his needle and thread where few have dared to venture, his more elaborate gowns wouldn’t look out of place in a Renaissance painting and are often held up as the pinnacle of bridal design. Deftly focused on fit, quality, styling and detail, each piece is a work of art inspired by three of the designer’s passions: old films, coffee table books and music. I managed to grab a quick phone call with Ian at the beginning of the year as he was putting the finishing touches to his 2016/2017 collections – due for release in April – to discuss the highlights of his illustrious career. In his line of work, days are anything but typical. In and amongst the designing, his time passes by in a whirlwind of meetings with fabric suppliers, modelling agencies, sales agents and jewellery designers, all the while cataloguing and storyboarding the fabrics, laces and trimmings he collects along the way. Days after we spoke, he embarked on one of his regular fabric-finding missions in Hong Kong, China and Taiwan. From a young age, Ian was given a taste of a more international lifestyle than many children are. He was born in Holland in 1967 before moving to Manchester when he was five. Growing up, he adored theatre and the arts and almost signed up to acting school. Instead, he studied design and graduated with a fashion degree from Berkshire College of Art and Design in 1989. Before the course had ended, he had already been snapped up by David Sassoon of Bellville Sassoon – a Chelsea-based couture company that has counted Jackie Kennedy, Audrey Hepburn, Elizabeth Taylor and every member of the royal family except the Queen among its loyal clientele over the years – and chose, accordingly, to specialise in wedding dresses for his final project. “It was a practical decision,” he admits. “I really wanted to do theatrical costumes but I realised that at that time there wasn’t that much work in it. Wedding dresses and eveningwear were the most similar things.” At the age of 25, he secured a job at Sweetheart Gowns – in his words, ‘a big cheesy American bridalwear company’ – where he worked for ten years, winning Wedding Dress Designer of the Year in the USA – a major achievement for an English designer – in the process. In 2002, having moved back to London, Ian set about creating his eponymous company along with fellow designer Peter Tague. “We converted a spare bedroom in the house, started up very

small, made a collection, went to show it at a show in Germany and got a full order book. At that moment it [went] from being a dream into ‘this is really tangible and we now have to finance these orders and put them into production and actually make these dresses’. So it made it very, very real.” The Collection Designed by Ian Stuart launched the following year in West Dulwich and has since earned Ian the Bridal Designer of the Year award five times. “Seeing [my own company] get off the ground was a really proud moment because I felt that finally I was free and I didn’t have the restrictions and constraints that working for another company has. You only have to answer to yourself.” Ian’s dresses aren’t for every bride; it takes a strong personality and style to pull off his more daring designs. Just take his best-ever selling flower bomb dress as a case in point. Flower bomb, which Ian describes as encompassing all the magic ‘Ian Stuart’ ingredients, burst onto the bridal scene in 2011 and was an instant hit. Such was its success, it featured in the 2014 wedding dress exhibition at the Victoria & Albert Museum alongside dresses worn by Kate Moss, Dita Von Teese and Camilla Parker Bowles. His latest collections, while still heavily featuring this signature style, have travelled in a more demure direction, with 1950sinspired short styles and dresses with smoother, cleaner silhouettes. They latter may look Â

easier to make than their frothier counterparts, but Ian admits they were even more challenging. “Those dresses look the simplest but they’re actually the most difficult because the draping is so complicated and the dresses are so plain, you can’t hide any mistakes with decorations,” he admits. In April, he’ll no doubt wow yet again with a new shape of dress that would look as good down the aisle as it would on the red carpet. Alongside these Oscar-worthy designs, he’s also been experimenting with some interesting fabric and lace Riviera takes the current collection in combinations. And his love affair with a more demure direction colour continues with some multi-coloured pastel creations that only he could pull off with style. “When a girl goes into a bridal salon, she’s given expert advice Unsurprisingly, given his passion for theatre and music, Ian’s by the sales consultants that will give her guidance and help to favourite job is presenting these new collections and showcasing eliminate the dresses that are not working for her. Words: Phoebe Seymour

f you live in Stannington and often wonder where the cries of guitars and crashing of drums are coming from, you are very likely to be the neighbours of local indie band, Fairbarn. “We’ve upset a few neighbours along the way!” admits lead singer and rhythm guitarist George Johnson. “We originally practised in my conservatory – which was a bad idea. Everyone told us to turn it down. We’re up in the attic now though, so it’s all good.” George, 17, started jamming with lifelong friend Brad FurnissHall, 16, in February 2014. The boys are neighbours, so always practised at each other’s houses on Fairbarn Road in Stannington. And what better name for the band than the place where it all began? George learnt to play guitar four years ago and one day asked if Brad would like to learn some chords. Brad progressed quickly and his younger brother Charlie, 13, soon joined their jamming sessions on bass, while George played drums. Eventually George switched to singing and, after two drummers had come and gone, Chris Kitching, 16, joined the band to complete the line-up. “We met at sixth form and the dynamic was there,” says George. “Chris loves Brad and Charlie. We’re good friends and I think that

im at the pyramid,” said Dave, my golfing partner in his slow Texas drawl. Were we driving off on an Egyptian course in the sand? Well, we were in the sand but it was more of the Nevada desert sort than the Sahara and the pyramid in question was the Luxor hotel on the Las Vegas Strip. That sums up Vegas – inspiring, mightily impressive, but one step away from reality. And it’s that escape from reality that makes the city such a popular destination with tourists from all over the world, with more than 40 million visitors jetting to the desert destination last year. Vegas boasts a myriad of attractions, from 24-hour gambling to exotic hotels, fine restaurants and sensational shows but one attraction that should not be overlooked is golf. Amazingly there are 52 top quality courses within half an hour’s drive of the airport. Bali Hai club maintains Vegas’ fracture with reality. It is constructed on the famous Vegas Strip with views over an array of

notable landmarks such as the Luxor and MGM hotels. And yet despite its hard-tobelieve location it has a theme – much like the majority of Las Vegas attractions. This course’s theme is a South Pacific island paradise, which is created by deep blue ponds, brilliant white sand bunkers, lush foliage and imposing palm trees. The theme is maintained by the colonial style luxurious club house with its soft leather seating and palm leaved roofing. The club house provides the backdrop to the 16th, a par 3 of 140 yards playing to an island green, as it does to a very difficult finishing par 4 of 486 yards. Get the ball on the fairway then master a long rescue club flighting the ball first over a pond and then drawing it over a beach-sized bunker. With a little luck the ball might just carry to the top of the bunker and then hop onto the green. Two putts mean one of the most satisfying pars of the trip, especially if a 19th hole gallery is gathered on the veranda. A round at Bali Hai means you’re in good company: Clinton, Obama, Samuel L

Jackson, Adam Sandler and U2 are among a long list of celebrities who have walked the verdant fairways of Las Vegas’ only course on The Strip. Another big name to leave a big impression on a Las Vegas club is Tiger Woods who scorched round Rio Secco in a course record 64. He had been a regular at Rio Secco because his former coach, Butch Harmon, runs a golf school at the club. He was obviously in a rich vein of form as a week later he won the 2000 US Open at Pebble Beach by 15 shots. This is golf in the real Wild West. Fairways are hewn out of the desert with huge boulders and rocks running alongside. It’s the rough, but not as we now it. Fortunately my transatlantic golfing pals informed me that rather than smashing a club and a body we should drop out onto the fairway with a one shot penalty. Can we try that in the Saturday medal please? The course is great fun with a number of very difficult par 3s which involve clipping the ball over ravines onto shallow, cliffhugging greens, framed by prickly cacti and shrubs. A feature of the course is the number of holes that funnel into small greens below sheer cliffs of rock and boulders. “This is where the Indians would round the cowboys up,” drawled Dave. “There was no escape when they were down there and the Indians would just pick them off.” All the courses in the area are worth playing. They all have unusual features but have one in common: they are beautifully maintained, which is an incredible achievement given the lack of rain (1.81 inches in 2014). Our final course was Bear’s Best, the theme of which is a collection of the best holes designed by Jack Nicklaus. The course again is great fun and shouts Vegas with its collection of different holes just as The Strip itself features a myriad of different themes such as Egyptian, French or Italian. When the sun goes down and The Strip lights up it’s time to savour the attractions

of another city that never sleeps. Again, suspend reality as you see a laser image of Gordon Ramsay and his new restaurant flashed onto a mock Arc De Triomphe. There’s a pirate ship on one side of the vast boulevard, a gondola on another and further down The Strip there’s a huge hot air balloon. Many of the older, landmark hotels such as The Venetian, New York New York and Caesar’s Palace are theme based but more recently the trend has been to develop more luxury brands such as The Bellagio, Delano and Aria. Casinos are still a major part of these establishments but they now

regularly performing. We were lucky enough to see America’s Got Talent winner Mat Franco and his array of impressive card tricks. The show came after a trip on Vegas’ own ferris wheel – The High Roller at The Linq. Bigger than the London Eye, it gave us great views of the dazzling city made even more enjoyable by drinks served at a bar in one of the capsules. If you’re not golfing in Las Vegas there’s plenty to do in the day. A helicopter ride over the Grand Canyon is a must with its spectacular views over the Nevada desert and The Hoover Dam. SIXERINTERVIEW

HE BROUGHT THE EAST, WEST With ‘Year of the Monkey’ celebrations taking place this month, what better time to speak to the king of Chinese cooking, Ken Hom. Words: Fiona Barber

egendary chef and author Ken Hom is known as the man who brought Chinese cuisine to British television back in 1984, with his BBC series Ken Hom’s Chinese Cookery. Since, he has published more than 30 books, has cooked for the likes of Tina Turner and Elton John, was awarded an OBE for services to culinary arts in 2009 and, most recently, launched a range of chilled oriental meals in Tesco. I caught up with Ken as he was enjoying a glass of Champagne at the Dorchester Hotel in London. He had just been for a stroll around Chinatown. “I was just in Bangkok, and I feel as home there as I do here. Home is where your friends and family are. I see the world as my home,” he mused. Ken grew up in Chicago with his widowed mother, Ying Fong (his father died when he was just a baby). “My mum instilled values into me and my Chinese uncle had a restaurant and taught me how to cook,” he reflects. “He was an amazing man; he taught me how to work, what was important, and how to be true to things that you believe in – and not to be seduced by fame or money.” Quite unexpectedly – while he was teaching at a cookery school in California – fame did come Ken’s way. He had met renowned Indian chef and television personality Madhur Jaffrey, who had just finished a series for the BBC. At this point, the BBC had interviewed 52 people over two years, in a search for the right person to present a Chinese cookery series. Jaffrey recommended Ken to the producer and the rest, as they say, is history. “It’s one of those things you think: OK it was fun doing it, but I never imagined it would have the success that it did. It really made my career and my reputation, and here I am more than 30 something years later,” he chuckles gratefully.

L

50 SIXER MAGAZINE

Longevity in this business isn’t always plain sailing though, so I wondered what has been the secret to Ken’s success. “I have always been true to my beliefs,” he concludes decisively. “When my series first took off, I was approached by a lot of

@SixerRMC

people to endorse this and that and I said no, even though, at the time I thought: Ooh the money looks good. But it somehow didn’t feel right. Everything else I have been involved in; the woks and my ready meals, I am really involved in. I’m a real pain

www.regionalmagazine.co.uk

in the you-know-what, because if it’s not good enough, I’m not going to sign off on it. I could have made a lot more money – but who really cares? “I think happiness is really important and to be proud of what you have done. There’s so much rubbish in the world and I don’t want to add to that. I want people say to me: I have a Ken Hom wok from 30 years ago and I’m still using it. That makes me happy.” Throughout our conversation it seems that, despite his success, Ken has remained as modest as ever; when he found out he was receiving an OBE he thought someone was ‘trying to pull a mickey’ on him. It’s also clear that he feels passionately about using food as a way to unite people. “If we all sat down and shared each other’s food and culture, maybe we would not have all these stereotypes and prejudices. If you like Chinese food, you can’t not like Chinese people – it’s the same thing for any other type of food. A lot can get you into trouble, but not food!” It’s at this point I began imagining Ken cooking up a storm on a campfire wok singing John Lennon’s Give Peace A Chance, and he admits: “I’m of the hippy generation, I believe in love. It sounds corny, but that what it’s all about.” With the Chinese New Year on the horizon (8 February) – the year of the monkey – Ken was looking forward to spending time with friends and family and says Chinese New Year is like our Christmas,

www.regionalmagazine.co.uk

“Chinese New Year is a time of renewal of friendships and contact with the family and the best way to do that is to sit around the table and eat. We eat dishes that are symbolic of things; above all we eat noodles, because noodles are a symbol of long life.” New Year and Easter all rolled into one. “It’s a time of renewal of friendships and contact with the family and the best way to do that is to sit around the table and eat. We eat dishes that are symbolic of things; above all we eat noodles, because noodles are a symbol of long life. When I was a child my mum would say: Don’t cut your noodles, eat them all up. I loved that.” While Ken has cooked for over 55 years there is still nothing he loves more than being in a kitchen trying out new things. “I try to tap into things that I have learned

but I’m not restricted by boundaries,” although he does admit: “I prefer to stick to the traditional methods. A chicken should look like a chicken; it shouldn’t be cubed or a foam, or puréed.” For anyone who hasn’t tried cooking Chinese food before, Ken’s advice is to start simple; a stir fry with vegetables, some crushed garlic, chopped ginger, oil, salt and pepper. “Then let the force be with them!” What kind of force is that? “The force of the wok!” He chuckles again. It turns out he is a huge Star Wars fan. And on that note our time was up. Ken finished his glass of Champagne and went off to enjoy the rest of his evening in London. I drove home with an intense craving for chow mein and silently thanked the man that’s partly responsible for making Chinese food as British as fish and chips. PROMOTIONCOLLECTIVE LEGAL SOLUTIONS

You need to take advice if…

Lasting Power of Attorney: the myth and the reality. any people have heard of a lasting power of attorney (previously an Enduring Power of Attorney), but they associate it with something you arrange later in life when you “start feeling iffy”. Here we will investigate some of the myths and realities surrounding mental incapacity and Lasting Power of Attorney.

M

MYTH: Mental incapacity is something that only affects people in later life through illnesses such as Alzheimer’s, so I don’t need to do anything just yet. REALITY Accident or illness can strike at any time, often without warning. The consequences of failing to plan can be significant, as outlined in this article. Why leave something so important to chance?

• You or your spouse/partner don’t yet have a Will.

MYTH: If I suffer an accident or illness, my spouse or children will automatically be able to take over the running of my affairs as my next of kin. REALITY: Your spouse or children have no automatic right to act on your behalf. Without a Lasting Power of Attorney, they will be required to apply to the Court of Protection to be appointed as your Deputy – a long, complex, costly and intrusive process.

• You have a Will but it leaves everything to your spouse/partner.

MYTH: I can simply add my spouse or children to my bank accounts, as a joint account holder would just carry on as normal in the event of my mental incapacity. REALITY: Banks are guided by the British Bankers’ Association to freeze both solely and jointly held accounts where one account holder loses mental capacity (they may allow pre-authorised payments).

• You or your spouse/partner don’t have a pre-paid Funeral Plan.

• You don’t have both kinds of Lasting Powers of Attorney set up.

• You are divorced or widowed. • You have children.

MYTH: When creating a Lasting Power of Attorney, it’s best to appoint my spouse and children to act together jointly. REALITY: Many poorly advised individuals have fallen into this trap. Appointing family jointly means they must act together in all matters, rendering the Lasting Power of Attorney useless when one of the appointed family can’t act – incapacity or death is not an excuse!

• You are concerned about what will happen and covering the costs if you need long term residential care.

MYTH: If anything happens to me and a decision needs to be made about life sustaining treatment, the doctor will automatically follow the wishes of my next of kin. REALITY: Only through a Lasting Power of Attorney can you give the people you trust the right to make choices about your health and welfare, including the ability to refuse lifesustaining treatment if you wish. A Lasting Power of Attorney is often likened to an insurance policy – you hope you’ll never need it, but your family will be very grateful for your foresight if you do. It’s the only way to have your say about who you trust to manage your affairs and make things as simple as possible for your loved ones.

BITS & PIECES Wharncliffe Side Primary enjoy Indian dancing The pupils in class three at Wharncliffe Side Primary School have been spending this term learning all about Incredible India. As part of their topic they have been looking at its geography, religions and art and were recently treated to an Indian dance workshop to develop an appreciation and awareness of other cultures and dance forms. The children thoroughly enjoyed the day learning some of the movements, beautiful hand gestures and facial expressions of classical Indian, folk and Bollywood dancing. They practised their new skills and put together a vibrant and energetic performance for their parents and the other children in the school. One parent said: “It was delightful and I even learnt a little about the traditions and history of Indian dancing.”

Sheffield slimmers are a hit with singer Jason Donovan A group of Sheffield Slimming World consultants were delighted to get a chance to cuddle up to Australian heartthrob Jason Donovan when he co-hosted the annual Slimming World awards with organisation chair and founder, Margaret Miles-Bramwell OBE. Lesley Haywood said meeting Jason was a wonderful way to round off a fabulous year: “I couldn’t be prouder of our members. They’ve lost fantastic amounts of weight throughout 2015, with many of them making their weight loss dreams come true by hitting their target weight, improving their health and more.” Jason, who found fame on Aussie soap opera Neighbours before launching a pop music and stage career, said he was thrilled to meet the consultants at the event, which was held at Birmingham’s International Convention Centre. Christine Beecroft said 2015 had been a big year for Slimming World, with the organisation welcoming hundreds of thousands of members and launching its first food range. She hoped 2016 would be just as successful. “Lots of people will have made New Year resolutions to lose weight and improve their health Thanks to our famous Food Optimising eating plan, they’ll see big results on the scales without ever having to feel hungry or deprived, and at our groups they’ll discover a whole world of support and advice that’s sure to help them reach their targets. “What I love is that while our members lose weight, they also grow in confidence and happiness – we joke the only thing that gets bigger at our groups is our smiles! We’ve had a lot of fun together in 2015 and I can’t wait to see what 2016 holds for Slimming World. I’d love anyone who’s thinking about losing weight this year to join us.” To live happy with Slimming World in 2016 visit www.slimmingworld.co.uk to find your nearest group.

Fitness group Strideout have had a great year, winning their second Run England Award for Regional Run Group of the Year 2015 and expanding into Stannington and Crookes. Mums on the Run and the Strideout Strollers 25k programme have been Strideout members and Children’s Hospital fundraisers Vicky Bridges and particularly successful and continue to help Samantha Patrick local women get into running. Strideout are also involved in the new Sheffield Recreational Running Project with England Athletics, which is going to see the introduction of new running routes throughout the city. The group has had a huge impact on the women of S6, as well as kids, and is now helping the people of S10 and S35 too. Vicky Bridges and Samantha Patrick are two members, who decided to use their passion for running to do something positive for charity. They have a lot planned over the next eight months to raise funds for the Children’s Hospital Charity. Fundraising started in December, with the Percy Pud 10k and now training is underway for the Sheffield Half marathon and other race events. Support from the run leaders at Strideout and local gyms including Joe McGovern’s and the Sheffield Boxing Centre has greatly improved their fitness. The main events will be the Three Yorkshire Peaks challenge in April and the Three National Peaks challenge in September, which will take them to the peaks of Ben Nevis, Scafell Pike and Snowden. Samantha said: “Training around the Peak District for these events has been fantastic! Our other events include a race night at the Niagara in January, afternoon tea in the Spring, raffles and more. Please support us and help make our brilliant hospital even better.” To donate visit: www.justgiving.com/teams/SPVB. Welcome To My Office – Views from the roofs of Sheffield S6 Simon Slater of Slater’s Aerial Services has a different ‘office view’ to most of us – a rooftop vista of Sheffield. But can you guess exactly where in the S6 postcode area he was when he took these photographs? To find out, follow @SlatersAerials and @SixerRMC on Twitter – the answer will be revealed at the end of the month. Congratulations to those of you who guessed where Simon was in last month’s pictures – Watersmeet Road looking toward Stannington Flats and Rivelin School. Special congratulations also go to Diane Gammons from Hillsborough, who correctly guessed where Simon was in our Christmas edition. PROMOTIONBRUSH & NEEDLE

Learn the secrets of making your home beautiful with the help of Brush & Needle. s your new year’s resolution to be more creative, save money, improve your home, or all three? Brush & Needle on Niagara Road in S6 can show you how to update old furniture or help you develop the skills to create soft furnishings for your home. Owner Sharon Burrows has been in the painting and decorating industry for 20 years, and was a college lecturer for 10 years in painting, decorating and design. She has also been sewing for a number of years, originally dabbling in textiles as a teen, before going on to make her own soft furnishings for her family home and clients. Keen to pass on her expertise, Sharon opened Brush & Needle in October 2015. Sharon currently runs two classes from her workshop; one in sewing, knitting and crochet for the home, and one in painting furniture. The next furniture workshop is for beginners using Frenchic furniture paint on Saturday 20 February. Frenchic is an all-natural, environmentally friendly furniture paint. It is a non-toxic and solvent free paint and is available in a chalk and mineral range, as well as wax. Not only do these paints come in 30 gorgeous colours, you can also be sure they are EN71:3 certified, meaning they are safe to use on children’s furniture and toys too. Frenchic have just launched the Lazy Range in 10 fantastic colours with no need to wax. This paint range has been wax infused, which has made painting furniture even easier – just buff after painting. Sharon is the only stockist for the Sheffield area. At the four hour painting session, you will be required to bring a piece of furniture to prepare and paint, but if you are struggling to find something, Sharon is happy to help. You will also have the chance to test out Frenchic products and purchase them to use at home. It can even be used on fabrics, faux or real leather such as on upholstered chairs. The stitching and needlework classes run three times a day on Mondays and Tuesdays in the morning at 10am, in the afternoon at 1:30pm and in the evening at 6pm. The sessions last approximately two and a half hours including tea and coffee breaks, and all the tools, equipment and resources you need will be provided. Brush & Needle’s shelves are filled with helpful books, brimming with inspiration, and though Sharon has heaps of teaching experience, she wants to encourage members of her

needlework classes to share their skills with each other. “I want to create a community where people of all levels explore and learn from each other,” says Sharon. “The sewing class is great for beginners, as well as for those who are a little rusty and want to get back into it. Making your own soft furnishings and decorating furniture can be a relaxing experience and I really want to inspire people to take part.” To book onto a course, call Sharon on 0798 0915171. Places for classes are limited, with only six spaces available for the Frenchic class – the first one is on 20 February (others to follow). Payments are taken in advance and cost £40. There will also be 10% off Frenchic products bought or ordered on the day of the workshop. The needlework classes regularly take place on Mondays and Tuesdays and cost £12.50 (first class only £7.50).
