but for Paul Gregory, owner of the Pheasant in Oughtibridge, it’s all about providing value for money. And, after seven years at the helm, he must be doing something right as customers return time and time again for the quality food, drink and atmosphere. The pub is rated ‘Excellent’ on TripAdvisor (with an average score of 4.8) and is also listed as a TripAdvisor Travellers’ Choice winner, a status based on the quality and quantity of reviews and ratings posted over a 12-month period. Paul has worked in the catering industry for over 30 years and puts the pub’s success down to four things: to serve good quality food, locally sourced wherever possible, at the right prices, with the right service. “I like to think we understate and overachieve and have grown organically over the

years,” he said. “Over 80 per cent of regulars live locally with many also coming from all over the city as well as further With Paul’s background largely being in restaurant kitchens, food is very much in focus at the Pheasant and alongside head chef Lee Wilkinson they have devised a tempting menu of small and large plates as well as afternoon teas, bottomless

brunches and hugely-popular Sunday lunches. Everything is made from scratch, including all the desserts, such as the extremely popular Bakewell Tart. The small plates are perfect for sharing or for those with smaller appetites and includes dishes such as Toulouse sausage, Larger appetites can tuck into the likes braised oxtail as well as pub classics like brisket burger. Although Paul works alongside Lee to develop the menus, which change four he now works very much front of house and can often be seen pulling up a chair to chat with customers. It’s all part of the ‘community’ feel and is also a great way for him to get valuable feedback. “As a chef I used to go out and talk to customers, it’s something I’ve always enjoyed doing,” he said. “I like to think that we’re much more than a pub. We offer a gastro-pub experience but with a community feel, we like to make everyone feel welcome.” Whilst food is front and centre at the Pheasant, drinkers are also welcome and can choose from a varied selection of premium cask ales, keg lager, stout and ciders, quality wines and unique gins. Thanks to the addition of Sunday racing, you can now enjoy at ultimate weekend at Owlerton Greyhound Stadium, writes Richard Abbey. ‘night at the dogs’ has become a ‘weekend at the dogs’ thanks to big changes made by Owlerton Greyhound Stadium for 2024. In addition to Friday and Saturday evening greyhound racing, they have added Sunday racing to their calendar with some tempting food offers to match. There are two food options available on Sundays, a Restaurant package and the formal two-course meal in the Panorama Restaurant (£16 for adults and £9 for kids) and includes up to four hours of live greyhound racing, table betting service and a free dessert if you pre-order. The ‘Sunday Trio’ includes either a Beef Sandwich, Roast Potatoes or Fries, or Crispy chicken Strips and Fries, and a drink (£7 per person). Admission is free on Sundays and the snack bar will is also open for customers who do not come in on a package. The modern glass-fronted Panorama Restaurant at Owlerton Greyhound Stadium accommodates up to 300 people and was near enough full when we arrived on the inaugural Sunday – there was barely a table to be had. We took a table at the side of the glass

that had great views of the starting traps but you can catch all the action – and betting tips – on the multiple screens that are dotted around the contemporary space. Keen to get the full family experience we’d brought our two children along for atmosphere, racing and, most importantly for the purpose of our visit, the food. First off, the Panorama restaurant package is incredible value for money, especially if you pre-order online and get your free dessert. Drinks can be ordered at the table and Britbet representatives circle the restaurant so you don’t have to miss any of the action. We started with dishes of homemade onion bhajis and a classic prawn cocktail whilst the kids tucked into slices of garlic bread. The well-cooked bhajis had plenty of spice and were served in a crispy poppadum basket with mango chutney and mint raita. The prawns, served in a crystal glass, came with that classic combination of iceberg lettuce, Marie Rose sauce and brown bread and butter. It was a winning start. Sunday lunches are the order of the day – at least for the grown-ups – and we couldn’t fault our plates of roast beef and beer braised pork ribeye, which were

served with huge Yorkshire puddings and a selection of excellent vegetables to include roast potatoes, carrots and cabbage. My children both opted for a 4oz a chocolate brownie, although they both portion sizes. Desserts for us came in the form of a pear and apple Bakewell tart, red berry coulis and vanilla ice cream, and treacle sponge pudding with candied ginger scented meal and then left us time to concentrate on the racing. We didn’t do too well on the betting front; our ‘pretend’ bets did rather well, scoring a couple of winners but when we but isn’t that always the way?!
