SIXERDO YOU REMEMBER? f we get some nice weather in the New Year quite a few of us might feel the need to shake off the Christmas time excess with a long walk in the fresh air – and this is a very popular spot for a bit of a ramble. From the magnificent collection of canes, capes, caps and bonnets you can probably guess that this photograph was taken several decades ago. Can you guess the location? Last month’s scene was a very familiar snowy image of a tram travelling along Crookes. The Post Office and tram tracks leading to Pickmere Road Tram Depot are on the right with Crookes Endowed School on the left.

SIXERWELLBEING Words: Stephanie Burns

SHAPE UP AND

LOSE IT!

While the old adage ‘eat less, do more’ is one of the best ways to keep fit and trim, have you ever wondered how best to drop the pounds and stay active at your specific age? We’ve compiled the best tips and tricks to keep you and your family fit and healthy throughout your lifetime.

KIDS Food Annabel Karmel is the doyenne of children’s cooking. Over the last 20 years, she has sold more than 4million copies of her 37 cookbooks, which focus on every stage of a child’s development. If you have fussy little eaters who hate the idea of fresh vegetables, Annabel’s hidden vegetable sauce is the perfect way to disguise veggies while giving your children a tasty, nutritious meal. This sauce is perfect with pasta, as a pizza topping or simply served alongside meat. This recipe – and many more – is available at www.annabelkarmel.com.

Hidden vegetable sauce Ingredients 2 tbsp light olive oil 1 garlic clove, crushed 1 medium onion, peeled and finely chopped 100g carrots, peeled and grated 50g courgette, grated 50g button mushrooms, sliced 1 tsp balsamic vinegar 400g passata 1 tsp soft brown sugar 1 vegetable stock cube dissolved in 400ml boiling water A handful of fresh basil leaves, torn Salt and freshly ground black pepper Method 1 Heat the oil in a pan, add the crushed garlic and sauté for a few seconds, then add the onion and sauté for a further 2 minutes. 2 Add the carrots, courgette and mushrooms and sauté for 4 minutes, stirring occasionally. 3 Add the balsamic vinegar and cook for 1 minute. 4 Stir in the passata and sugar, cover and simmer for 8 minutes. 5 Add the vegetable stock and cook for 2 minutes, stirring continuously. 6 Add the basil and season to taste. 7 Transfer to a blender and blitz until smooth.

Fitness If your child is not naturally active and struggles to find the energy to run around as much as their friends or siblings, don’t despair. The key is making energetic activities fun – if they’re having a good time, they won’t feel like they’re being forced into exercise that they’re not comfortable with. Activity Sheffield (www.sheffield.gov.uk) offers a huge range of activities for kids – Zumbatonic, dodgeball, rounders, street dance and gymnastics are just a few – so whatever they’re into they can find something to get involved in. If a little extra help is needed, Zest on Upperthorpe Road has a fantastic Children’s Weight Management Service for seven- to 15-year-olds. This 12week programme comprises a weekly one hour group session on healthy eating followed by an hour of activity. Visit www.zestcommunity.co.uk for information.

TEENS Food There’s no way you can keep track of everything your teenager consumes while they’re at school, at college or out with friends. But you can lead by example and maintain a healthy home life with filling breakfasts and homemade evening meals. Teaching them to cook their own meals will also be hugely beneficial if they’re going to live away for university or moving in with friends and will ensure unhealthy salt-laden ready meals are a last resort rather than a daily occurrence.

Fitness Team sports are a great way for teenagers to keep fit, have fun and socialise outside of their usual friendship groups. But, if your son or daughter is self conscious or worried that sport will interfere with their school work and social life, there are loads of at-home options that can keep your teen fit without taking up too much time. With thousands of celebrity fitness DVDs – there’s even a Made in Chelsea version – they can fit in some activity without having to leave the house or sacrifice other commitments.

ELDERLY Food To maintain a healthy lifestyle as you get older, it’s important to choose a vitaminrich diet. The body’s ability to absorb key nutrients decreases with age so ensure that – where possible – you are consuming the correct balance. Essential vitamins such as B12, folic acid, calcium, vitamin D, potassium, magnesium, fibre and omega3 fats. Many of these are found in fresh fruit and vegetables, eggs, milk, fish and meat so aim to eat as many unprocessed foods as possible. If you struggle to incorporate all the necessary nutrients into the foods you eat, consider taking a supplement or multi-vitamin to boost your daily intake.

ADULTS Food There are thousands of diets available for those looking to lose weight and shape up. Atkins, 5:2 and Dukan have had their fair share of the headlines in recent years and do work for many. But, if lowering your calorie intake to just 500 two days a week or cutting out whole food groups fills you with dread, there is a simpler alternative. Assess your current eating plan and change any fat or carb-heavy meals and snacks to healthier options. Then assign one day a week to your ‘treat’ day, when you can eat whatever you like. By eating well most of the time and knowing that for one day a week you can pig out, you’ll be more motivated to stick to your plan and will enjoy those treats even more when you do have them.

Fitness Fitness Swimming is a great pastime for any age but it’s particularly beneficial to older people whose joints and bones aren’t up to running or a strenuous gym session. Water is around 800 times denser than air so even a gentle swim can burn more than 200 calories in just half an hour. The rhythmic action is calming and it can also improve psychological well being, balance blood pressure and normalise pulse rate. Sheffield is fortunate to boast a variety of swimming pools across the city, including SIV’s Concord Sports Centre, Hillsborough Leisure Centre and Ponds Forge, which offer a range of sessions for fun, fitness, socialising and relaxation. To find your nearest pool, call 0330 333 0555 or visit www.swimsheffield.co.uk.

For many adults, the biggest obstacle to improving their fitness is time. With work, family life and socialising, exercise is often last on the to-do list. But there is a solution. More than two million people worldwide have downloaded the 7 Minute Workout App, which contains 12 highintensity, 30-second bodyweight exercises with a ten second rest between each one. You can perform the workout at home and need no specialist equipment, making it the ideal way to get fit in no time.

Scared by the thought of the gym? The Zest Centre is dedicated to making fitness friendly for people just like you. hen you think of gyms do you get the image of an ugly, impersonal building filled with fit, lycra-clad, sweaty bodies all trying to outdo each other? What you probably don’t think of is a quirky, Victorian building very close to the city centre and a stone’s throw from the Infirmary Road tram stop, where you can find a gym with all the amenities of our contemporaries, but without the fear factor! Say hello to the friendliest leisure centre in the city – say hi to Zest! So what do we offer? Did you know the Zest Centre, at Upperthorpe, is the only healthy living centre in the city? We offer a swimming pool; a well-equipped gym, health checks, a vast range of children’s sports, a café, library, IT suite and much more. Did you know that you can borrow library books here seven days a week. between 7am and 9pm on weekdays, using our self-issue facility? In our pool we offer a wide range of swim sessions and lessons; check out our online timetable for details. We also offer women-only swimming, toddler aqua classes, over 50s swimming and disability swimming sessions. Our pool is a little warmer than other pools in the city so is really great for children or people with disabilities. For children we offer a wide range of sports and activities including football, trampolining, cricket, multi-sports, gymnastics, badminton, karate and dance. We operate a successful exercise referral scheme, but don’t take our word for it, read what one of our customers had to say: Neville was diagnosed with lymphoma cancer early last year. After a long course of chemotherapy and radiotherapy treatment he was unable to walk without specialist support. Neville was referred to Zest’s Exercise Referral Service by specialists at the Hallamshire Hospital. “Six months ago I could barely walk. Now I use the arm and leg bike, treadmill and weight machines. I feel physically and mentally better when I come to Zest.” Neville currently exercises five times a week, has lost weight and his blood pressure and heart rate have

Membership gets you unlimited access to gym, lane and leisure swimming and spa facilities, plus 350 fitness classes at seven venues across Sheffield. You could try aqua aerobics at Heeley Swimming Pool, a spin class at the English Institute of Sport Sheffield (EISS) or body combat at Hillsborough Leisure Centre. So wherever you work or live, or whatever you enjoy doing, there’s a Fitness Unlimited venue for you. By becoming a member, you can also join in the celebrations for Fitness Unlimited’s 15th birthday! Now one of Sheffield’s biggest sporting success stories,

E

Fitness Unlimited started out back in January 2000 with just three venues, a handful of fitness classes, a health suite and an athletics track. It has gone from strength to strength over the last 15 years, continuing to provide the biggest and best value membership in Sheffield. Having sold approximately 150,000 memberships since its infancy, it is safe to say that Fitness Unlimited has played a major part in making the people of Sheffield healthier and more active. The scheme is operated by Sheffield City Trust, whose primary role is to benefit the health and wellbeing of the people of Sheffield. Its charitable status means that any surplus income generated is ploughed back into facilities across the city. This has resulted in significant investment across Fitness Unlimited venues over the last 15 years. More recent projects include a significant renovation at EIS Sheffield in 2013, the addition of a new gym at Heeley earlier this year, and a more recent revamp at Concord, which boasts the latest Unity Technology. So, whether you just want to tone up or completely change your fitness regime, Fitness Unlimited’s multi-site membership has you covered. Fitness Unlimited members also benefit from a rewards package, which grants up to 20 per cent discount on selected leisure activities, such as ice skating. You can visit the venues as often as you want and take part in as many classes as you like. With so much on offer, the hardest task will be deciding what activity to take up first. After 18 years and still going strong, Powers Gym is a one-stop shop for health, fitness and martial arts. he centre has been a thriving gym and martial arts centre since it opened its doors in 1997. It continues to transform the lives of many locals, whether they are training for fitness, self defence or to relieve stress. With Sue and Paul’s 40 years’ of experience and a new generation of trainers, the centre has become known as the one-stop shop for health, fitness and martial arts for men, women and children of all ages. They all benefited from Sue’s experience and individually designed training programmes. Fit camps run by gym manager Alex Mackenzie also proved extremely popular and resulted in many success stories of male and female campers losing weight and inches while improving their fitness levels. New classes coming in 2015 include yoga and beginners’ Pilates.

Gritting Campaign

Sheffield Council make u-turn on proposed cuts Bradfield Parish Council Newsletter

Report From Our Chairman The Christmas period has been very busy for Bradfield Parish Council, with a host of festive events and the challenging issue of the gritting cuts which hit our parish. When I was elected Chairman of the Council in the summer I wanted to introduce ‘pop-up’ style meetings where parish councillors met residents out in the community rather than in our chambers. The first one was held at the Mustard Pot pub and was very well attended. Following the meeting a superb and intense campaign started to get the roads gritted again. We were successful in our efforts as Sheffield Council reversed their decision to cut gritting. I am hoping to hold more of these meetings this year. If there is an issue you would like us to come out and discuss with your village or hamlet, please do get in touch. We also held our first ever Christmas card

competition for the parish where children from local schools came up with a design that the Parish Council could send out on a card to local groups and dignitaries. The competition was very popular and councillors had a tough job choosing the winner. Ten finalists attended a party in our council offices where the winner, Connie Brocklesby, turned on the lights for our parish. It was a fantastic event - and I hope we can make it an annual competition in the future. We also received a wonderful Christmas present in the parish office when we were informed that we had been shortlisted by Vodafone for a 3G rural project which will deliver much needed mobile phone signals in Bradfield. Happy New Year!

Bradfield Parish Council help local residents to get the roads gritted again Bradfield Parish Council organised a meeting for local residents at Ye Olde Mustard Pot on Tuesday December 9th. The main topic of discussion was the cuts to gritting routes. Around 45 residents turned out, along with Parish Councillors and two community police officers. At the meeting residents mentioned that 8 different road accidents happened in the Midhopestones area on the 8th of December. A plan was started to campaign against the cuts. Following the meeting a further 11 accidents happened across Bradfield Parish. Bradfield Parish Council started the original campaign back in the summer by chairing another meeting at the Parish Council offices where over 50 residents came along. A petition was also raised with over 1,300 people which was presented to Sheffield City Council. Fortunately Sheffield City Council finally listened to residents concerns after a concerted media campaign and reinstated the routes that were previously gritted. Says Cllr Matt Dixon: “Well done to everyone involved in both gritting campaigns in Bradfield and Midhopestones. It shows that when folk get together decisions can be changed. We now need to keep a close eye over the winter to make sure the right roads are gritted again.”

Connie won the chance to turn on the Christmas lights for all 13 trees in the parish with a ‘magic’ plunger outside the council offices. Pictured below (and across) are all ten finalists. Bradfield Parish Council invited children from local primary schools to design a Christmas Card that was sent to the Prime Minister and lots of local organisations. The ten finalists were invited to a tea party with their parents at the council offices

The Parish Council office was very festive this year! Ten children from the parish attended a party hosted by Bradfield Parish Council’s Chairman Matt Dixon. The childen were finalists in the council’s first Christmas card competition. The winning design came from ten-year-old Connie Brocklesby, from Stannington, whose drawing included one of the iconic yellow Tour de France bikes, which decorated roadsides, cafes, pubs and houses this summer. As part of her prize, Connie, a pupil at Nook Lane Junior School in Stannington, was given the chance to switch on the lights of the thirteen Christmas trees across the parish. Her fantastic design was made into cards which dropped through the Prime Minister’s letter box, as well being sent to a host of other community groups, MPs and local authorities. Connie’s colourful design depicts Father Christmas on his way to Bradfield having abandoned his sleigh in favour of a yellow bike. The rear of the card also features pictures

by nine other finalists who were from Oughtibridge Primary School, Nook Lane Junior School and Bradfield Dungworth Primary School in Dungworth. The finalists were all invited to a festive tea party at the parish council offices in Bradfield when the Christmas lights were also switched on. Chairman of Bradfield Parish Council, Cllr Matt Dixon, who organised the competition, said: “It’s the first year we have organised a competition like this and we were delighted that so many children got involved, the standard of the drawing was fantastic, we’ve certainly got some talented young artists in Bradfield. “We all agreed that Connie’s picture definitely stood out and was a lovely reminder of a very special year for our rural parish when we hosted the Tour de France this summer.” The Christmas card project was funded through a special bequest by Kevin Murray, a former Bradfield school teacher.

a group of folk in the village of Wharncliffe Side got together and deci ded to organise an annual Christmas party whe re they would feed and entertain older people in the village. This year the event was held at Wharncli ffe Side Primary School. The children put on a concert with carols, music and some brilliant comedy. Staff and parents helped orga nise it, with the volunteers who run the older people’s association. After the children’s concert the older people were entertained by some fab ukulele players and the Oughtibridge Brass Band. They then had their Christmas dinner with sherry. For 66 years the association has been able to

fund the Christmas event themselves through coffee mornings. But this year they have struggled financially and asked the Paris h Council for help. Councillors were delig hted to fund an event like this. Chairman Matt Dixon attended the even t with local councillor Jeni Liversidge with the Christmas cards designed by children from the parish. The funding for the party came from the will of local teacher Kevin Murray who left the people of the Parish a significant amount (but only to spend at Christmas). Well done to the group who organise it, and to Wharncliffe Side Prim ary School’s children, parents and staff for hosting the event. It really was something spec ial.

Bid To Improve Mobile Phone Signals Gets Closer! Last year Bradfield Parish Council applied to Vodafone to become part of a rural mobile phone signal plan and found out just before Christmas that they have been shortlisted. This means 3G signals will be coming to Low and High Bradfield subject to last minute technical checks from Vodafone. Bradfield Parish Council’s clerk, Teresa Bisatt, has been invited to attend the launch event with Vodafone and the government in January. Mobile phone signals in High and Low Bradfield are still virtually non-existent and this would be a massive boost to local residents, businesses and visitors. The application has been supported by Sheffield Hallam M.P Nick Clegg and local businesses: The Plough, Flask End, Smithy Garage and The Old Horns. Says Bradfield Parish Council’s Chairman Cllr Matt Dixon: “This is a fantastic result for the parish. Mobile phone signals have been an issue and the Parish Council has been working on this for a number of years. We are delighted to have reached the final stage.” A mobile phone booster could also be fitted to Bradfield Parish Council’s offices. Nick Clegg, Sheffield Hallam M.P has supported the bid

Do You Want To Be A Parish Councillor? Bradfield Parish Council holds elections every four years. The next round of elections will be held in May 2015. If you are interested in standing for election you can contact the parish office for more information. You do not need to have any qualifications or be a member of a political party,

just an interest in working on projects in the parish. Meetings are held in the evening, which means you can still be a Parish Councillor if you work during the day. Parish Councillors are not paid. A small allowance is available for petrol or expenses but most councillors do not claim anything.

BEAT THE BLUES

Don’t let the Christmas hangover get you down. Banish the January clouds with our guide to a cheerful New Year. n 2005, psychologist Cliff Arnall claimed that bad weather, debt and the time lapsed since Christmas – plus the usual back-to-work blues – culminated in the third Monday of January being the most depressing day of the year. Of course, there is absolutely no scientific evidence to support this theory and, though Cliff was named as the author of the report, it was actually a Sky Travel publicity campaign. There’s nothing like a touch of mythical misery to make people

I

book holidays, eh? The fact remains, however, that January is a glum month. While it’s easy to dispel a myth that claims a certain day is worse than the rest, the post-Christmas blues are hard to shake off completely. This year, don’t fall victim to the trend. We’ve rounded up a few tips to help you start 2015 as you mean to go on – happy and full of energy. So forget the January blues, here’s to the January grooves! (Oh come on, it nearly works…)

WORDS: Stephanie Burns

GO SALES SHOPPING If this sounds like the very last activity that would raise your spirits, don’t be a martyr. Let your family/partner/friends go without you, enjoy a couple of hours alone, and avoid the stroppy teenager routine. For the many others who love nothing more than a bargain, however, this is the brightest ray of sunshine on an otherwise dull horizon. And don’t forget, shopping can also be included in your new year exercise regime as two-and-ahalf hours of dashing round the shops will burn around 385 calories. As if you really needed an excuse…

PRACTISE MINDFULNESS A buzzword in mental wellbeing, mindfulness is currently being touted as the best antidote to a stressful lifestyle. It’s about appreciating the ‘now’ and being present in the moment by being aware of how you think, feel and act. For example, next time you wash your hands, pay attention to the sound of the tap running, how the water feels on your hands and the scent of the soap – it sounds odd but it can really help to refocus your mind. For a more in-depth practice, a four-week online course by The Mental Health Foundation (www.bemindfulonline.com) costs £60 and ‘involves paying attention to our thoughts and feelings in a way that increases our ability to manage difficult situations and make wise choices’.

SOCIALISE

The best way to nurture a bad mood is doing nothing – or checking social media and seeing others having a better time. But, as postfestive bank accounts are notoriously a little peaky – to put it lightly – lavish nights out and weekends away are often last on the agenda. Does that mean you can’t still see friends and enjoy perhaps a more modest activity? Of course not. Grab the last of your Christmas chocolates, a bottle of wine and gather some friends for a night in playing board games or watching a DVD. Granted, it’s not the most glamorous way to spend a Saturday night but it’s fun and it’s free and, at this time of year, you can’t really ask for much more.

BORROW A DOG Spending quality time with playful pooches is proven to lift the spirits – and those without a pet of their own need no longer miss out. National initiatives ‘Borrow My Doggy’ has been bringing dog lovers and dog owners together since 2012. Those not able to keep a dog can borrow someone else’s – taking it for walks, feeding it and generally having a lovely time – meaning the dog is happier and the owner needn’t feel guilty about not being able to keep it company throughout the day. It’s a win-win situation. For more information and to get matched with members in your local area, visit www.borrowmydoggy.com.

AND FINALLY… FORGET THE RESOLUTIONS

The Burns Night app (left) and a traditional Burns Night supper (above)

CELEBRATE BURNS NIGHT This often-overlooked Scottish tradition, which takes place on 25 January and celebrates the life and work of poet Robert Burns, is what winters are made of. Comforting food, warming spirits and sharing the experience with friends and family – what better way to spice up the end of a dreary month? There’s even, would you believe, a Robert Burns app available for iPhone and Android. On it you’ll find more than 550 poems and love songs; a useful guide to hosting your Burns supper including recipes, what to drink and what to wear, and a biography detailing just what makes this eminent bard one of history’s greats.

@SixerRMC

Be honest, when have you ever stuck to one longer than a couple of weeks? If you are looking to lose weight, get fit or quit smoking, start right now. It sounds obvious but there is nothing stopping you making the changes you need to make, besides yourself. Putting it off until a certain date or not trying at all because it’s now the 10th of the month and you planned to start on the 5th makes the whole process seem like more of a big deal than it really is and will set you up to fail. Instead, run up and down the stairs a few times right now, cook a healthier tea tonight or have one less cigarette today. By gradually building up to the full gym membership or strict health plan, you’re more likely to achieve the results you want. Finally, don’t beat yourself up if you don’t stick to your original plan as it will only make you feel worse.

PROMOTIONANDERSON’S RESIDENTIAL SALES & LETTINGS

It’s the personal touch that makes all the difference to the service at Anderson’s heffield-based, independently owned Property Shop has recently rebranded its business to become Anderson’s Residential Sales and Lettings. The fresh new marque celebrates the company’s success as one of the city’s most forward-thinking property agents. The rebrand marked a new phase in the company’s development, with Robert Anderson putting his stamp on the business as a reward for years of hard work, dedication and commitment to both new and existing property customers. He said: “The decision to change the company’s name reflects our desire to make the brand more personal. When customers take the emotional decision to move house and contact us to make an appointment for

S

their home to be valued, I will be the person that comes out to value it. “The personal service we provide has been paramount in our success to date. Some of our customers have become good friends over the years and we believe it’s the extra effort we make to support our clients through an often difficult process that provides a differentiator to other agents in the city. We aim to make moving house as stress-free as possible.” Robert previously worked for a leading Derbyshire estate agency for eight years before joining Property Shop as a director in 2003. With a passion for property, he personally provides the majority of valuations as well as overseeing all aspects of residential sales and lettings. Through their extensive contacts and associated businesses Anderson’s can put you in touch with experts in the fields of legal and financial matters, surveys and basically act as a one-stop shop for your move. Whether you’re buying, selling or letting properties you can have confidence in their professionalism, as they are members of the National Association of Estate Agents (NAEA) and the Association of Residential Letting Agents (ARLA). Robert’s fellow directors, Rosalind Watchorn and Rebecca Linsell of www.rwatchorn.co.uk, have worked alongside him for the past six years. Both are experienced solicitors. Rosalind deals with wills, probate, trusts and oversees the private client department, while Rebecca deals

We very much hope you all had a lovely Christmas – traditionally the time for tinsel, celebration and jolly time with families. “Sadly, it can also be the time for break up, separation and imminent divorce as tensions rise over the turkey dinner”, said Louise Gower, Pensions and Divorce Specialist at Hamnett Wealth Management.

Divorce is not for the feint-hearted but help is at hand - do not despair! For those who see in the New Year with the onset of financial division, there is some positive news with new Pension rules from April 2015. If you are over 55 there is considerable flexibility on how those retirement benefits are taken. Not only can you receive a tax free lump sum, you can also achieve larger taxable amounts from the remaining Pension pot. This has advantages – you can use this money to help purchase your next home saving interest on your mortgage, or if you need to buy out your partner’s share of your house. In fact, finding yourself on your own, or with a family to support – extra cash is always helpful.

Don Valley Window Systems came to the rescue of a Sheffield 11 family as seen on ‘Cowboy Builders’

There is a downside though – this is your retirement fund. Any amounts taken out will impact on your standard of living in retirement. Additionally, it is important to remember that lump sums taken from the pension in excess of the tax free part will be deemed as extra income in that year. This will have an effect on the income tax you pay. Sounds a bit of a minefield? The solution – come to see us. You would always be welcome here to enjoy a cup of tea and a chat with us, talk about your options, and guide you through the Pensions maze – you will start to see light at the end of the tunnel. So, we wish for you a wonderful 2015, and a Happy New Year with positive new beginnings, whatever that may bring!

Walkley House circa 1937

Sheffield doctor Jenny Stephenson traces the history of the Walkley House Medical Centre over 144 fascinating years in her new book.

A CASE HISTORY OF CARE Dr Jenny Stephenson

he state of the health service and the future of the NHS is a matter of much debate that affects each and every one of us. Since it was established in 1948, the NHS has had to adapt constantly in order to meet social, political and medical changes and cater for a growing and ageing population with complex health problems. Now one Sheffield GP has traced the history of her medical centre over more than a century, uncovering how practices have changed locally and how the NHS has adapted and, in her opinion, how it should continue to do so in order to survive. Dr Jenny Stephenson has collected the stories and memories of her patients, colleagues and staff, building it into a book of valuable and unique history. ‘The History of Walkley House Medical Centre Sheffield’ details the fascinating timeline from when her surgery, Walkley House Medical Centre in Sheffield 6, was built in 1870 up to the present. Dr Stephenson tells Sixer about the history of Walkley House, which has always been home to a medical household, and how the practice has experienced over a century of health care changes.

“I have been at the practice since 1985 and during that time I have seen history repeat itself in the problems facing the community and the doctors – threats of epidemics, embracing new treatments and adapting to NHS re-organisations to name a few. “I was intrigued as to who our founder doctors were and how they coped with these challenges. I was also very keen that in the future we do not lose the high quality personal care exemplified by these former doctors. “I spent about four years gathering letters and written memories from patients after putting up posters in the surgeries and a note in the local newspaper. I was very fortunate that the grandson of the founder doctor Denis Connolly happened to see the notice as he was bringing his son to look around the University of Sheffield. “He visited Walkley House to see where his grandfather had worked as a GP and saw my notice asking for historical information. The message was relayed to his own father, John Connolly, the son of the founder. He generously shared his memories, which were very valuable in getting the book started. “I then took a four-week sabbatical to put the book

together and compile all the writing and illustrations that I had been working on. Many of the photos and drawings are my own but I am so grateful to Stannington Library and the local history societies for information and photos of the old village. “This animated account shows how the practice adapted and survived through many challenges including cholera, influenza, smallpox, two World Wars, the new NHS, industrial unrest, a flood and a disaster to name but a few. “I based the storyline on many different reflections and accounts from patients and professionals over these decades, each adding a valuable dimension to the background of the social, political and medical changes of the time. “Walkley House has always been in the hands of doctors. The early doctors practised on their own but they soon joined with other local doctors to offer a wider, more efficient service. Together they embraced new treatments like antibiotics and adapted to the changes of the time. “Our current doctors started working at Walkley House in the late 1980s and 1990s and over the years they have continued to adapt to the prevalent medical scene. “I really enjoyed interviewing everyone and learning about Sheffield’s history from the archives and local historians. As a team, we each feel proud to be part of Walkley House and Stannington Medical Centres and this project gave us all a unique opportunity to celebrate our work together and with our patients. “Most general practices are small independent businesses that have had to be flexible to survive. Much has changed since the NHS Act of 1948, under which these practices have worked to render primary medical services to their registered patients. “GPs are now faced with the challenge of improving the care of the ageing population, with its increasingly complex needs, and we work in a different way, sharing the skills of GPs, nursing teams,

hospital specialists and the voluntary sector. “Being a doctor is a most rewarding career. However, there are national difficulties in recruitment of GPs as the number of early retirements increases and there is also a need for investment in practices in order to realise the government’s vision of increased care closer to home. “As this history book shows, the personal relationship that patients have with their GP and practice is very highly valued, bringing about quality care in a cost-efficient manner. However, GPs need to adapt to keep doing this valuable job – as the early doctors did.”

‘The History of Walkley House Medical Centre’ is available for sale at Walkley House and Stannington Medical Centres, Stannington Library, The Star shop on York Street, The Famous Sheffield Shop and Waterstones in Orchard Square. Priced at £12, the proceeds go to Diabetes UK, Alzheimer’s Society and Stannington Library. Copies can be ordered by post (£15.20) by writing to Dr J Stephenson, Stannington Medical Centre, Uppergate Road, Stannington, Sheffield, S6 6BX.

s we pack away the tinsel and savour the last mince pie, it is with a sigh of disappointment that the Christmas festivities draw to a close for another year. But whilst the holidays may have passed, winter is well and truly here to stay. The cold weather can leave our homes and gardens looking a sorry state and, with frosty temperatures killing off our plants and flowers, the last thing we want to do is venture outside in January. PROMOTIONHILLSBOROUGH GOLF CLUB

Hillsborough Golf Club has broken down the barriers to make one of the city’s leading courses available to everyone – whatever their ability. t’s traditionally the preferred club of Sheffield Wednesday players and, since its inception in 1920, has built a reputation as one of the city’s top golf courses. Both players and professionals consider its opening three holes the toughest in the country. It’s fair to say, then, that Hillsborough Golf Club has a well-deserved reputation as one of the region’s most prestigious courses. But thanks to current captains Mark Rabjohn and Sue Priest, who have made it their mission to break down old-fashioned traditions, there is now a whole lot more to this historical club than meets the eye. And they are encouraging everyone of every age to come and see the changes that have been made. One of the most significant transformations is the acceptance of female players. Embracing the Equality Act of 2010 with great confidence, Hillsborough was one of the first clubs to allow men and women to play together. Now, they host joint captain’s days, ladies are invited to play on President’s Day, and all adult members pay the same fees. They’ve also made it much easier for the younger generation to get involved. “The jump from junior to full adult membership was too big and many younger players simply couldn’t afford to keep playing,” explained Sue. “We’ve introduced an incremental scheme between the ages of 21 and 30 so membership fees

I

gradually increase each year. This makes it far more manageable.” Some of the juniors are so talented they have even been Spring open d invited to play in the men’s first everyone welcoay – team. One – 18-year-old Jonathan Keep a look-oume t Thompson – has even signed to the for details England Boys’ team. The social side of the club has also improved dramatically thanks in no small part to the introduction of a new caterer two years ago. The Sunday lunch, open to all from 12noon to 3pm, features a full carvery with all the trimmings at £9 for one, £11 for two and £13 for three courses. The Christmas party nights with dinner and entertainment were a huge hit with both members and the public too, and there are plenty of other events throughout the year. Out in the open air, Mark has also worked incredibly hard with the green staff to improve the already outstanding greens and fairways and, as a result, players have access to fast greens all year round. “I have played hundreds of courses around the world and I can honestly say that Hillsborough is the perfect test of golf,” said Mark. “There is every type of hole you can imagine and that presents a fantastic challenge for seasoned pros while being the ideal training ground for beginners. Being 500ft above sea level, the views out towards Bradfield are unbeatable too.” To test the course for yourself, why not take advantage of the pay-and-play facility? For just £25 a head (£100 per four ball) until 31 March, you can enjoy a bacon roll and a coffee followed by a round of golf, topped off with a twocourse meal in the clubhouse. Call the club secretary on 0114 234 9151 for more information. Brian Umpleby practices his kicking skills after cutting the ribbon at Sheffield Tigers

Yorkshire RFU vice president kicks off Tigers’ official opening Sheffield Tigers RUFC’s pitch has recently benefitted from a £90,000 investment to improve its drainage and create more car parking space. Funded by Sport England, Sheffield Town Trust and supporters, the reconditioned pitch and new park area were opened officially by Yorkshire RFU senior vice president, Brian Umpleby. To mark the Tigers’ important development, there was a celebration event during which Brian cut a ribbon and took the chance to kick a rugby ball once again! He said: “Here at Tigers the top pitch has tended to be boggy. Now, with the expert drainage, the club should get more people to play rugby and, when the weather is bad, I am sure the upgraded facilities will prove beneficial for the club.” Tigers’ chairman, John Marriott, added: “These improvements are vital and will help us to restore Sheffield Tigers to its former glory. We are very grateful to Sport England, Sheffield Town Trust and our supporters – without their marvellous support the project would not have been possible.”

College chief to retire Hair cut for charity Two little girls did their bit for charity over Christmas by having their hair cut to raise money for The Little Princess Trust. Libby Raper, aged nine, and Eleanor Charlesworth, 12, from Stannington, raised £250 for the charity which provides real-hair wigs to children who have lost their own hair through cancer treatment. The girls raised the fantastic amount through sponsorship and bake sales. They had their hair cut at Posh FX in Hillsborough, which also kindly donated to the worthy cause.

The Sheffield College chief executive Heather MacDonald has announced she will retire later this academic year. Mrs MacDonald, 60, has been at the helm of the college for more than six years. During her tenure, the college has progressed from being assessed as ‘satisfactory’ by Ofsted to being graded ‘good’ and some students have topped national benchmarks. The college has also bolstered its financial position, strengthened its profile with employers, unveiled state-of-the-art training facilities and won national and regional awards. It was also successful in securing government funding for the £15.6million upgrade to creative industries and engineering facilities opening in September. Mrs MacDonald said: “I am proud to have led an organisation that gives so much to the city, changing lives and shaping the success of our students, businesses and communities.”

PROMOTIONTHE SHOULDER OF MUTTON

Words: Fiona Barber

Tasty food, great value and a welcoming country pub feel make The Shoulder of Mutton a great choice for a memorable meal. rimming with old-fashioned charm and with a real country feel, The Shoulder of Mutton has been at the heart of the Worrall community for many years. Landlord David Ashcroft – who has been at the helm for just three months – says it was the traditional style and décor of the pub that initially lured him in and now he’s hooked. David has a wealth of experience as a landlord, with more than 20 years in the trade. He has managed pubs all over the country, and moved to Worrall from Ember Inns’ pub Robin Hood in Millhouses. He says: “We welcome everyone here – walkers, cyclists and dogs – in certain areas of the pub.” One of the most impressive elements of the Shoulder of Mutton is the menu. There’s no huge fridge freezer storage here and there’s certainly no boil-in-the-bag anything, because everything – and I mean everything – is freshly homemade. Even the chips are peeled and hand cut daily. David says they also buy their produce as locally as possible. And with resident beer Farmers’ Blonde from Bradfield Brewery from less than three miles down the road on draught – it’s clear he is a man of his word. Of course, impressive provenance would be meaningless if the end product wasn’t top notch, but the Shoulder of Mutton does not disappoint. Not only is the food exceptionally high quality, but there’s an extensive range to choose from, meaning they cater for many tastes. As well as traditional winter warmers like stews, curries, and pies, there are more contemporary options such as roast belly pork, mushroom risotto and chicken ballotine. The Shoulder of Mutton has many excellent offers on its bar and main menus, providing really tasty value-for-money dishes.

B

From Monday to Thursday from 5pm, customers can enjoy a free dessert with any main meal. From Monday to Saturday from 12pm to 5pm, the pub offers two bar meals for £8.95. Dishes include baked salmon marinated in garlic and lemon with chips, beef and beer pie with mash or WHAT’S ON chips and peas, and Cajun Monday: pie night. chicken with chips, salad Tuesday: burger night. and sweet chilli sauce. Wednesday: curry night. If you think that’s great Thursday: quiz and play your value, you’re bound to be cards right. impressed by their Friday: fresh fish Friday. Monday to Friday deal. Saturday: traditional waitress Between 12 and 3pm, service in the relaxing restaurant. enjoy two meals for £5 – Sunday lunch: one course, £7.95; exceptionally great value – two courses, £10.95 or three including tasty offerings courses, £13.95. such as gammon and chips, chilli and rice, or scampi and chips. Of course, the pub does the usual Sunday roast (12-4pm) and you can expect crisp-but-fluffy roasties and seriously succulent meats. And if you have a hankering for something slightly less British, one of their rustic homemade pizzas, baked in an authentic pizza oven is bound to hit the spot. For those with a taste for continental cuisine, towards the end of January the Shoulder of Mutton with be hosting a Portuguese buffet night inspired by David’s Portuguese wife, Elizabete. This will include four traditional dishes for customers to enjoy with rice and chips. For updates and more events like this visit www.shoulderofmuttonworrall.co.uk. PROMOTIONGRAPHICA RESIN SURFACES

For a stunning alternative to tarmac, paving or concrete on your drive, you need the help of the experts at Graphica Resin Services.

BEFORE

AFTER

f you are tired of the same old driveway, or if the years of wear and tear have begun to show on your once flawlessly pebbled path, you’ll want an expert who you can trust to get the job done. Graphica Resin Surfaces is run by Tony and Nathan, who have over 22 years’ industry experience between them. Their family-run company has a strong customer focus and they ensure every driveway is completed to the highest standard, priding themselves on offering a quality product at a fair price to each and every client. They also understand the importance of tailoring to the specific needs of each customer. “We often have people with no idea what they want, so the most important thing is to advise and cater to their needs such as budget, easy maintenance and safety aspects,” explains office manager Jamie Miller. “An anti-slip surface is something that older people are often concerned about and we’re here to offer the customers peace of mind.” Graphica's technical surveyors supply you with the information you need, so you can make an informed decision. Their service includes a full refurbishment of your driveway, which involves one of their experienced teams preparing the surface before the resin is laid, which results in existing concrete or tarmac being restored and regulated. Then, by using polyurethane resin combined with a mixture of loose aggregates of your choice, they are bound together – giving the appearance of a loose stone effect, without any movement of stones. The finished product is smooth, environmentally friendly, stronger than concrete and guaranteed up to eight tonnes in weight. As well as being durable, it’s weed resistant and easy to maintain, and – as with all Graphica Resin Surfaces – anti-slip as standard.

I

Although there are many alternative driveway surfaces such as tarmac, block paving or imprint concrete, Graphica truly believe their product is one of the most cost-effective ways of giving your home and garden the finishing touch it needs, without disturbing any existing foundations or adding any waste to the environment. Many of their customers want to extend their existing driveway, which can be done without planning permission, due to the permeable nature of the resin bound system. As members of CheckaTrade.com, they take great pride in what they do and have been checked, vetted and monitored. Their profile can be found at www.checkatrade.com/ GraphicaResinSurfaces. Graphica Resin Surfaces doesn’t just specialise in driveways; their abrasion-resistant rubber crumb is the ideal surface product for any area where there is a risk of falling. They can cover children’s play areas, school sports areas, athletic tracks, tennis and basketball courts, golf tee-off areas, garden paths and boat deck surfaces. For more information, visit www.graphicaresin.co.uk, where you can also take a look at the all new driveway swatcher – which allows you to see how each of the different surfaces and colours look – and read testimonials from the company’s many happy customers. You can also visit www.facebook.com/ Graphica.ResinSurfaces or call 0800 0305 771 for a free, noobligation quote.

COMPLETE KITCHEN & BEDROOM SOLUTIONS

• Customer kitchen and bedroom fitted Septmber 2014, Sheffield.

From a replacement worktop to a whole new kitchen or bedroom, there’s no job too small for CKB. aving traded out of 133 Middlewood Road for over three years now, the Sheffield public are becoming well aware of the high quality, bespoke service on offer at Complete Kitchens and Bedroom Solutions. Owned by Scott Webster, CKB offer a complete kitchen and bedroom service alongside the capability of anything from removing walls to building extensions. Scott said: “When you come to us you really do get everything. Building work, electrics, plastering, decoration, fitting, flooring – this is a one-stop-shop.” But just because Scott and his team can perform complete renovations, that doesn’t mean that they have to. CKB understand that not everybody can afford top to bottom renovations at this moment in time so are more than happy to work on anything from replacing a single kitchen unit upwards. “I can do eight metres of worktop and a new sink and tap for £950 or a whole kitchen or bedroom – so people can have whatever they can budget for,” said Scott. “And if you have your own electrician or plumber that you would like to use then you are more than welcome to do so. We will do as little or as much as you wish.” A feature of CKB which sets it apart from many of its competitors is that it manufactures everything on site, giving it a bespoke service. This means it can cater to any needs or desires. Scott employs a close team of dedicated workers including a registered electrician, and plumber, as well as qualified plasterer, brick layers and window fitters, who are all contracted to CKB. Gloss doors particularly in white and cream are in vogue at the current time. This gives a room a fresh appearance and Scott has seen requests for this design boom.

H

Consequently Scott is offering deals on an Astro white and cream gloss – check in at the showroom or give him a call for more deals. Scott doesn’t believe in such gimmicks as offering customers ten per cent off their total bill though. “These are often used to pull the wool over people’s eyes. I offer competitive prices from the word go.” Should you contact CKB, Scott will come out to view your home for a free appointment. The visit normally lasts for an hour depending on job size. “I don’t give quotes off-the-cuff. I am meticulous when it comes to pricing, so post-appointment I will go through everything and provide an accurate, itemised and fair quote.” Scott is the initial point of contact for customers and he not only designs his work but does the fitting too. Once Scott has committed to a job he dedicates all his time to it from inception to completion. He guarantees that he will not be working on multiple projects at one time and is even willing to turn down work to be able to do this. “My customers like to know that I will always be there and that they have my undivided attention. That is the least they deserve and will get when they come to me.” As such his customers can contact him 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Doors and worktops are guaranteed for a decade but for extra peace of mind Scott ensures that payment comes in instalments and that the full fee is not paid until the job has been completed satisfactorily. For a company that will provide your home with undivided, specialist and bespoke attention, give CKB a call today!

PROMOTIONPEACE FUNERALS

With a good reputation, reasonable prices and local service, Peace Funerals provide the very best care at a time of need. uality of service – and cost – are probably the two main concerns whenever we make any significant purchase. Ideally, we would often also like to find a provider of the service within our own locality, and someone who comes recommended, as this would give us further reassurance that our needs are likely to be met. No more is this the case than when we are arranging a funeral, or making plans for our own funeral. We want to know that we are dealing with people who are reputable, have a track record of providing good service to their customers, are sensitive to our needs, are accommodating, and will charge prices that are clear and reasonable. For the past 15 years, Gavin Moorby and Stephen Parkin, who are managing the new north Sheffield funeral home of Peace Funerals, have been part of the small Stephen team at Peace Parkin (left) Funerals’ south and Gavin Moorby Sheffield base that has been endeavouring to provide these high levels of service to families who have suffered a bereavement, and also to individuals who want to draw up their own funeral plans. Like the other members of the team, they have received lots of positive feedback from their customers and have helped Peace Funerals to become the only funeral directors in Sheffield to be recommended by both the Good Funeral Guide and the Natural Death Centre. But just because the quality of service is good, it doesn’t mean that the bill has to be large. The charges levied by Peace Funerals compare very favourably with other firms locally, and

the company feels that it is very important that costs are transparent – all their charges are clearly set out and itemized on the company’s website (www.peacefunerals.co.uk). “We know that money can be tight for lots of families and we try to provide options that enable families to organise funerals that are special and personal at a reasonable cost,” said Gavin. “It is very exciting to have a branch in north Sheffield. I have lived in this area all my life and have wanted to be able to provide the same high standard of care here that we have been offering in south Sheffield for so long.” The new premises occupy the building that previously housed the Fox Hill medical practice, by the traffic lights on the corner of Halifax Road and Wilcox Road, but it has had a considerable facelift since Peace moved in. One of the doctors who used to work in the building recently visited and was blown away by how much nicer it looked. ‘We hope that people will find it a calm and comforting environment,” said Stephen. “Many of the people who visit here will have just suffered a bereavement and we want to do everything that we can to support them.” Peace Funerals are one of the few independent funeral companies in the country who offer funeral plans that are underpinned by the Ethical Funeral Plans Trust, a body set up to ensure that the money people pay towards their own funeral plans is invested carefully and in organisations that have good ethics.

PROMOTIONVAPOUR BOUTIQUE

If you are trying to kick the smoking habit, join the e-cigarette revolution at the Vapour Boutique and take your first steps towards a cheaper, cleaner, healthier future

espite the health warnings, the cost and the social exclusion from pubs nowadays, the uncontrollable need to smoke means a lot of people feel like they can’t live without cigarettes. But even the most seasoned smoker can kick the habit for good, by replacing nicotine with a healthier option. Using an electronic cigarette gives you all the satisfaction of smoking, without the tar or toxic substances found in tobacco. You can still get the nicotine hit by selecting the level of nicotine in your e-cig, which some people use to replace cigarettes, slowly cut down or eventually remove nicotine all together. E-cigs are the cheaper, cleaner, healthier alternative to smoking as they produce a water-based vapour instead of smoke. There is no smell, second-hand smoke or burning, which makes for a safer environment for those around you. Electronic cigarettes can also be used anywhere where smoking is banned in the UK, so you can smoke e-cigs, known as ‘vaping’, in pubs and offices. E-cigarettes have become big business in the UK over the past couple of years. With such a huge range of brands and e-liquids available, it can be difficult to know where to start choosing the right one for you. Vapour Boutique has recently opened in Hillsborough and the independent retailer prides itself on offering customers a truly personalised service. The knowledgeable team handpicks and tests every brand and e-liquid before they are stocked instore, so they can offer customers the best service and reliable advice. The team are all ex-smokers who regularly use e-cigarettes and they truly believe that if e-cigs can work for

D

them then they can work for anyone. They describe themselves as ‘not just another vapour store’ and truly believe that e-cigarettes are the best thing on the market to help wean you off nicotine and kick smoking for good. Vapour Boutique has a second store in Nottingham and both shops have a chilled, friendly atmosphere. Customers are encouraged to relax in the comfy lounge’s leather sofas, where they can sample as many e-liquids as they like for free before reaching a decision. This ‘try before you buy’ philosophy ensures that every customer finds the most suitable product for them and takes that first step towards a healthier lifestyle. Smoking is an expensive habit but e-cigs come in at a fraction of the cost. Although actual costs will vary between people, a 20-a-day smoker could spend less than £2 per day using an e-cig compared to the usual £7.50 per pack. Vapour Boutique offers standard kits so you can buy off the shelf or you can create a tailored package. They stock everything from starter kits to cloud chasing kits and are official distributors for premium brands including Innokin, Aspire, Space Jam Juice, Drakes and Mystique. The list is endless and they stock a lot of American products to get the very best quality ranges. Take the first step towards a healthier, more cost effective alternative to smoking by visiting Vapour Boutique today and joining the e-cigarette revolution.
