his month’s Sixer is different. We’re taking a stand and backing the campaign group who want to save the 100-year-old lime trees on Rivelin Valley Road. Usually we leave this sort of thing to local news outlets; monthly lifestyle magazines are not necessarily the best platform to campaign on an ever-changing news story. However, it has become clear over recent weeks that this isn’t just about trees any more. It’s about the kind of city we want to live in. Many Sixer readers shared our dismay about the dawn raids on Rustlings Road last month, when cars were towed and peaceful protestors were dragged away and locked in police cells. Local MP Nick Clegg compared it to an “anti-terror raid”. As the focus shifts to Rivelin, we wonder whether we will see similar disgraceful scenes in S6. We see the secrecy surrounding the 25-year private finance initiative deal done between Sheffield City Council and contractors Amey and ask: what do they have to hide? Those yellow ribbons tied around mature trees are about a lot more than just a bunch of hippies making some noise. They have come to symbolise a way of life that is under threat. Sheffielders have always prided themselves on living in one of the greenest cities in Europe. We love our parks and wide open spaces, and the trees that over the years have given our favourite beauty spots true character. Let’s keep it that way.

DO YOU REMEMBER?
Last month:
Do you remember? t may seem a lifetime ago now, but last month’s festive Do You Remember brought a big response including Mrs J Carter of Stannington who says the photo was taken at the house of her next-door neighbours, Betty and Roger Wilson. “They were both very musical people, and the occasion was when they and their friends went carol singing round the village, much to everyone’s delight, says Mrs Carter. “Sadly, Betty and Roger have both died, but I have passed Sixer on to their daughter Kathryn. Richard Green also has fond memories of the annual Christmas Eve carol sing. “The
I
group walked around Stannington every Christmas Eve carol singing at various people’s houses, helped along with a wee dram at every stop. “It was certainly a merry evening especially by the time they arrived home, which was generally after midnight. It was always a good night making Christmas that bit more special, leaving memories in all our hearts. Pictured were (L-R): Roger Wilson, Steve Flewitt, Vivian Crapper, Nick Farrelly, Belfield Furness, Ernest Goodison (Father Christmas), Betty Wilson, Peter Ramsey, Joe Atkins.

Deborah can help you with relationship advice
Set goals, achieve them IF YOU’RE READY TO MAKE A CHANGE, BUT ARE NOT QUITE SURE HOW, TALK TO DEBORAH CUNDY AT CLARITY IN MIND. new year is always associated with change – be it our relationships, careers or fitness. With one in five couples considering divorce on the first working day of the year, according to a survey by law firm Irwin Mitchell, and January being the most popular month to change careers, according to a survey by Glassdoor, this time of year marks a big shift in our way of thinking. If you are one of the many people ready to make a change, but are not quite sure how, talk to Deborah Cundy at Clarity in Mind. Deborah is a life coach who will help you set goals – and most importantly – help you achieve them.
A
Why do people want to make changes to their lives in January?
It’s typically a time to reflect about our lives. Having the right mind-set and changing habits can support lasting results, whatever your goals. People are looking for more purposeful and fulfilling lives and therefore seeking the services of a life coach to support them on the pathway to success. They say 90 per cent of actioning change is about why, and the other ten per cent is about how. You may want a new job and the why might be because you want to move up the promotional ladder. Once you know why, Deborah can help you plan how to make it happen. What kinds of changes can she help with?

esteem, to relationships and careers. Deborah also specialises in weight-loss and has her own inspirational story to tell. How does she deliver her coaching sessions?
This summer she introduced a new and successful method of coaching clients walking and cycling in the beautiful outdoors. Along with supportive and confidential one-to-one coaching sessions, she helps her clients break down challenges and view all of their options. She also guest speaks at schools and local groups and runs workshops on a variety of topics.
Testimonials “Thank you for coming in and speaking to our Year 10 students. Overall the feedback was positive and they felt that our talk helped them understand that they should never give up and make sure they always give 100 per cent in life – especially at school.” – Louise, Sheffield
Why choose Clarity in Mind?
“I first started to see Debbie on a regular basis eight months ago. She has helped me in many ways, especially with work and relationship matters. I found her very professional and trustworthy and she made me feel at ease.” – Michael, Sheffield
Many people want to make changes in their lives, but some are not always easy to stick to. Rather than setting yourself unrealistic new year’s resolutions, speak to a fully-qualified life coach who can keep you focussed and motivated throughout the year. Some clients sometimes need support to work out what they really want from their life and into the future. Goals can be exciting, especially with support from Deborah, who will act as a catalyst to help you achieve them.
“I have only praise for Debbie. She gives the very best advice, help and makes you see what is going on in your life and what the next stage is. She is very patient and listens to you with understanding. I found that all my meetings with her were very helpful and led me to a great deal of answers. I can fully recommend her for clarity within your life.” – Angela, Sheffield

30 years of success CUSTOMERS JOIN THE CELEBRATIONS AS LESLEY AND HER TEAM AT NEW IMAGE CELEBRATE THEIR ANNIVERSARY. ew Image held an event to celebrate their 30th anniversary. It was great to see so many customers – old and new – some of whom, have shopped with the boutique continuously for the past 30 years. Customers enjoyed up to 30% off winter stock. We asked owner Lesley Taylor what her recipe for success is. “You will find a wonderful collection of stylish casual clothes on the ground floor for ladies who like to be different. “The business has experienced many changes over the years, but our dedication to sourcing quality clothing, together with a team that delivers excellent customer service, has ensured New Image celebrated its 30th anniversary.” Marking the start of their 30th anniversary event on 14 December, customers enjoyed up 30 per cent off – and New Image’s winter sale will continue well into 2017. Whether you are a new or old customer, you will be well-received by a dedicated team at New Image. collection of stylish casual clothes can be found on the ground floor. New Image was established by Lesley and her mother, Jean, in December 1986. It was originally a small shop based at 279 Middlewood Road, selling quality fashionable ladies clothing and providing tanning rooms on the first floor. In February 1989, New Image was extended and moved to 277 Middlewood Road. The new shop opened under Lesley’s ownership in September. 2007 saw the whole building renovated to make room for a luxurious upstairs area to accommodate special occasion wear. Looking to the future, New Image staff members Deborah McHale, Amanda Glaves, and Barbara Smart welcome Beverley Dearn, previously from special occasionwear store Carols The store benefits from amazing seamstresses, Margaret Telford and Lisa Brothers, who are always available to ensure that perfect fit. Milliner Darcie Mae also makes regular visits and is happy to help customers find a hat that suits them or to discuss designing and creating a fabulous bespoke headpiece. Appointments are advisable at busy times from January 2017 (particularly on Saturdays), so we are fully staffed and able to give you a fabulous shopping experience. And director Ian Hunter says the award is testament to the firm’s approach – even though they work in an opposite manner to many in their industry. “Our award was a really proud moment for all of our family, and I would like to thank every single member of staff, because without all their hard work, this wouldn’t have been possible. We’ve known many of the people who work for us for over 25 years. Without their efforts we couldn’t be where we are today. “The foundations were laid for winning @SixerRMC
the award many years ago, when my father took over the business and decided to take an opposite approach to many others in the industry by not following up leads and quotes and focussing on the very best customer service. Our salespeople visit, post out a quote then leave the decision to the customer. We never chase people, I know that costs us sales but many customers say they love how we do business.” Hunter believes the firm’s success is built on this approach, alongside a long-term commitment to employ fitters, rather than

That means they can focus of delivering unrivalled customer service, he adds. “This year we’ve achieved record levels of customer satisfaction and we believe we set the standards for the rest of the industry across the UK, because of our no-pressure sales approach and our absolute focus on keeping our loyal customers happy. I think the judges were impressed by how we combine the traditional virtues of friendly, personal service – which we’ve always delivered, ever since my father took over the business – with the very latest contemporary products and efficient management processes.” Another important aspect of the company’s efforts is their focus on charitable work, with Hunter commenting: “The Sheffield Children’s Hospital Charity receives a

And that’s why we have achieved over 99 per cent customer satisfaction again and have received the very highest rankings from customers via Which Trusted Trader.” @SixerRMC

Write decision You need to take advice if… NEW YEAR RESOLUTION? YOUR WILL: WHEN OR WHY.
2016 was a depressing year, with many of our favourite stars leaving us and some, like Prince and Caroline Aherne, departing this world well before their time. This acts as a reminder to reflect on our own mortality and get our affairs in order so that, should the worst happen, our family and friends know how important they were to us – here Haworth Ward-Drummond of Estate Planning Services offers advice about when is the right time to write a will...
riting a will is a sensible idea for everyone over the age of 18 – otherwise chaos can ensue amongst a family when a loved one passes. Look at the drama over Prince’s 300 million estate – the star died intestate (without a will) and now DNA testing is taking place to determine the identity of people claiming to be his blood relatives. Your estate might not be worth £300million but protecting your legacy is still important. So what are the life stages that trigger writing a will among the British public? Anyone aged over 18 and of sound mind can write a will but there are common junctures when people arrange an appointment with a solicitor and put pen to paper. Buying a house is a trigger – one in eight people in England and Wales cohabit with a partner they aren’t married to. Nevertheless, in the event of one partner dying intestate, the other could find that, rather than their common law spouse’s share of the property passing to them, it could be distributed among relatives. (Surprisingly almost 70 per cent of cohabiting couples don’t have a will, according to research by Will Aid.) Marriage is obviously another popular time for people to make a will, as is the birth of a child. At the opposite end of the spectrum, divorce is a life occurrence that prompts people to reassess their wills. Growing older forces people to confront their mortality too. According to the Will Aid research, the older an individual, the more likely they are to have written a will. In the oldest age group of 75 and over, 90 per cent of people had written wills, 74 per cent of the 65-74 age group had done so, and 47 per cent of 45-54 year olds had formally set out their last wishes. Official government advice on writing a will – is worth bearing in mind - to review it every five years. Whatever stage you are at in your life, and however small or large your estate, it seems the time to write a will is now. It’s inexpensive – our will writing prices start from £150 and the process will bring peace of mind to you and your loved ones, whether you’re buying your first home with a partner, celebrating the birth of a child or collecting your pension for the first time. We have been helping clients protect their legacies for many, many years so, for advice on how to safeguard yours, call us now on 0114 288 1104, email us on advice@estateplanningservices.co.uk or visit us at www.estateplanningservices.co.uk

New year, new you START 2017 ON THE FRONT FOOT BY MAKING SOME POSITIVE CHANGES TO YOUR LIFESTYLE. RACHEL MARTIN HAS SOME TOP TIPS TO HELP YOU REACH YOUR GOALS. ow that the champagne corks have stopped popping, and the excesses of Christmas and new year are over, it’s the perfect time to take stock and cut back in order to lose a few unwanted pounds. With the new year comes a raft of resolutions and 2017 is set to bring with it some of the latest and most effective ways to lose weight. And while reaching a healthy weight can take commitment and willpower, there are some tried and tested approaches that should make the task easier. If you feel overwhelmed by all the conflicting nutrition and diet advice out there, you’re not alone. Here are some weight loss tips and trends to help you achieve your health and fitness goals.
N
“Since you need to burn 3,500 calories to lose a pound of fat, choosing classes that burn as many calories as possible is your best bet to shed the pounds.”

JOIN A GYM
For most people, the first step towards achieving their fitness goals is joining a gym. Every gym is different, and yours should be the perfect fit for your specific workout. It shouldn’t just be a room full of treadmills but a place in which you actually enjoy spending time. Well, as much as you can enjoy a place where you are continually huffing and puffing. Your gym should feel comfortable, inspiring and nurturing to your overall health. FITNESS CLASSES
Any fitness class is a good choice if you have trouble finding motivation to exercise. If you’re trying to lose weight, however, choosing the right class will make a big difference. Some classes are good for muscle definition and relaxation but don’t offer too much in terms of calorie burning. Since you need to burn 3,500 calories to lose a pound of fat, choosing classes that burn as many calories as possible is your best bet to shed the pounds. HYDRATION
Appetite and thirst are regulated through the same part of the brain, leading you to think

you’re hungry when you’re dehydrated. Beat the confusion by drinking a glass of water and waiting 15-20 minutes to see if your hunger vanishes. Not only is water the cure for unnecessary snacking but bonus benefits include clearer skin, improved digestion and liver support, allowing your body to better metabolise fat. HEALTHY EATING
Healthy eating is not about strict dietary limitations, staying unrealistically thin, or depriving yourself of the foods you love. Rather, it’s about feeling great, having more energy, improving your outlook, and stabilising your mood. To set yourself up for success, think about planning a healthy diet as a number of small, manageable steps – like adding a salad to your diet once a day – rather than one big drastic change. Ditch habits of weighing your food to the gram and crunching numbers throughout the day. The less you stress about eating, the better your chances of sticking with your eating plan and avoid making decisions that could set you back.

applications to reduce fat and improve skin texture without ever going beneath the skin – and without the need to exercise. Eight sessions are usually required for ultimate results but this would be dependent on a full consultation to determine suitability. Treatments are available individually or as part of a more extensive fat-removal and body-contouring programme.
FITNESS APPS
“Not only do studies claim people have more rigorous and longer workouts when they’re outside, but being around nature has positive psychological effects.”
Unfortunately, apps alone won’t help you lose weight, but if you can’t afford a personal trainer, fancy gym membership, or even a simple fitness tracker, they can definitely help you stay on track. Calorie-counting and exercise-tracking fitness apps let you use a smartphone or tablet to record food and exercise, as well as set a net calorie consumption target or range for the day based on your height, weight, age, gender, and overall level of activity.

HYPNOSIS
A workout DVD or even a quick YouTube search to find indoor aerobic routines can pay off when you have limited space. Committing to a 20-minute blast at home is easier than promising yourself that you will get up early for the gym. When conventional weight-loss techniques don’t work, for some people, this might be the time to try an alternative weight-loss therapy.
Hypnosis is considered to be the resolving solution for people following the patterns of binge eating. Many have claimed it is the best supplement for weight loss, and it is a method used all over the world these days.

Skin deep RIGOROUS TRAINING AND YEARS OF EXPERIENCE MEAN THAT SUE ROBINSON OF CLINICA AESTHETICS IS IDEALLY PLACED TO OFFER THE TREATMENTS THAT WILL HELP YOU LOOK YOUR BEST. f you are considering aesthetic treatments but have been scared by horror stories in the press, or are worried about confidentiality, Clinica Aesthetics could be exactly what you’re searching for. The clinic, on Stockarth Lane in Worrall, boasts a secluded, semi-rural location and is run by Sue Robinson, who has 35-plus years’ experience as a registered nurse and midwife. Sue has always had an interest in aesthetics and after leaving the NHS, she gained a masters-level qualification in independent prescribing at Bradford University. During this time she gained invaluable experience working in London with her clinical mentor, Dr Aamer Khan, of the renowned Harley Street Skin Clinic. This qualification means no third party needs to be involved to prescribe any treatments or medications, and that Sue can offer continuity of care to her clients with everything being completed to her exacting high standards. Sue’s professionalism is evident in every aspect of her business and work ethic. “I am a member of the BACN (The British Association of Cosmetic Nurses),” she says. “I attend as many study days and conferences as possible to make sure I’m always up to date in every aspect of my work.” Throughout her nursing career, Sue has worked with people from many different walks of life, including young adults as a midwife and school nurse. This is one reason why Sue believes it’s so important to practice ethically. “My job is to make people look as good as they possibly can for their age. Having worked in schools, I know the pressures that young people feel from the media and you have to make sure someone wants to have a treatment for the right reasons, not just because it is in fashion; I won’t do trout pouts and I am reluctant to treat anyone under the age of 20 – unless it’s a correction, such as facial asymmetry – because even at 18 years old, the structure of the face hasn’t finished developing. “For anyone considering aesthetic treatments, my advice is to seek out a professional

registered nurse prescriber or doctor as we are listed on the registers of our mandatory regulatory bodies, which anyone can check out. It’s vital that you make sure the person treating you is experienced, to ensure your safety.” Two of Sue’s most popular treatments are wrinkle-relaxing injections and facial dermal fillers, which are used to replace lost structure and volume as a result of the aging process and smooth out lines and wrinkles. In addition Sue is the only practitioner in Sheffield to be trained to perform a treatment using Profhilo, which addresses crinkly, lax skin on the face and hard to treat areas such as; the neck and upper arms – very effective. Medical-grade chemical skin peels are also available and are great for treating hyper pigmentation, sun spots, uneven skin tone and acne scarring. This treatment requires four or five days down time but results in beautiful new skin. Other treatments include medical dermal needling, which is used to treat scarring, fine lines and wrinkles, pigmentation and much more, anywhere on the body. Skin health should be the first concern when considering cosmetic treatments. Sue is an official, listed practitioner for Obagi, a

prescription-only skincare system that can transform skin in 12-24 weeks. There are several different systems available and Sue analyses your skin before recommending the best range for you and arranging follow up to monitor progress. In addition, Clinica Asesthetics has introduced to Sheffield the IS Clinical range of medical pharma-grade skin care products and the internationally renowned Fire and Ice resurfacing facial treatment which has a huge celebrity following (Rosie HuntingtonWhiteley, Beyoncé, Gwyneth Paltrow – to name just a few). It is an impressively effective relaxing procedure which offers the benefit of a mild chemical peel but with no “down-time” (visible peeling). It looks and feels fabulous hence it is known as ‘the red carpet facial’. For more information visit www.clinicaaesthetics.com or call Sue on 07771 604604. Achieve your goals LET G&M HEALTH CARE WITH ALEVERE TRANSFORM YOUR LIFE AND YOUR BODY.
“ I
dread to think where I would be now if I had not started the Alevere programme when I did. I was deteriorating fast as a person.” James Jayawardena’s weight loss difficulties started in April 2016 when his GP diagnosed him with high blood pressure, high cholesterol and pre-diabetes. “Something had to give as my weight had really started to creep up over the last few years, and, at 22-and-a-half stone, I was starting to become increasingly aware that if I did not do anything about it I was exposing myself to potentially irreversible and serious health implications.” James was worried that his demanding lifestyle would mean it was impossible for him to lose weight, however, as soon as he started on the Alevere programme he was convinced that the team at G&M Healthcare could help him. “My initial concerns were about being hungry, as I ate quite large portions and would often graze during the day. I worked out that I was eating 600/700 calories between meals and I was really worried; I didn’t need to be. “I was apprehensive going into the programme, but once you’re in, the staff walk you through everything, and you feel at ease straight away.” Alevere quickly taught James that losing weight is about understanding food and the effects of various ingredients in food – ensuring you don’t deprive yourself but you take a regular, balanced approach.
“I began Alevere with an open mind and the thing that I found most refreshing was that the programme was not about dieting but about making permanent adjustments to my lifestyle. “I started losing weight very quickly, it was like an overnight transformation. My clothes started to feel too big and people started to notice too, you don’t get any more motivational than that. “Losing weight does not mean giving up everything you enjoy eating. In fact, the pleasure of eating something ‘unhealthy’ is better when it becomes an occasional treat, rather than a regular and ignored part of your diet.” After three months on the programme James had lost almost seven stone, and was starting to feel much more confident again, and has since continued his weight-loss journey. “I was losing 3kg every week, so it was great to get on the scales and realise how much I had lost overall – and that made me want to carry on. I liked the routine of the programme and the big weekly weight loss was a great motivation, I became very focused. “With good planning and listening the programme is adaptable, I wouldn’t say it was easy, it took willpower, but I didn’t feel hungry and my energy levels were noticeably higher to myself and others. “Alevere isn’t a diet, because it changes your philosophy completely. It teaches you to eat normal but healthy food, and retrains you
on how you should eat. “The programme is now part of my daily life without me being obsessed with it and by what I can and can’t be eating. I have changed how I eat for good – I eat regularly and I still have what I want, but I don’t snack all the time.” James has discovered a whole new way of life, and, though he knows there is no magic wand to losing weight, he has seen that with help and support it is achievable. “Alevere has totally changed my life. People always comment that I am now a completely different person and approach things in a different way. “Grace, Sarah and all the staff, therapists and nutritionists are extremely knowledgeable and there’s always as line of communication and support available and you feel like part of a little community. “I firmly believe in Alevere and want others to see how it has worked for me. If I had one regret it would be that I did not start the programme sooner.” G&M Healthcare is a GP-led clinic in Broomhill, Sheffield. The experts at G&M Healthcare are dedicated to helping people look their best and, with a series of complementary cosmetic treatments on offer, alongside Alevere, clients are truly spoilt for choice. GRP Roofing A fibreglass roof or GRP Roofing (glass reinforced plastic) will last for at least 30 years. Fibreglass matting is combined with layers of flexi resin to create a hard and durable, watertight laminate surface. A final top coat is available in a choice of colours with the option of a non-slip surface – ideal for walk ways.
Felt Roofing Rubber Roofing A rubber roof or EPDM (ethylene propylene diene terpolymer) can be often installed in one complete layer without any joins. It is extremely light weight, elastic and tough. Rubber roofs are adhered to a wooden substrate. A well installed rubber roof can be a very good option.

Andrew Stringer and Rebecca Hammond taking a stand
Save the Rivelin trees
ONE OF EUROPE’S LONGEST AVENUES OF LIME TREES IS UNDER THREAT BUT A LOCAL ACTION GROUP ARE NOT ABOUT TO TAKE THIS LAYING DOWN. PHOEBE SEYMOUR SPOKE TO THE SAVE RIVELIN VALLEY ROAD, HILLSBOROUGH AND WADSLEY TREES CAMPAIGN GROUP.
I
f you drive down Rivelin Valley Road, you will be greeted by rows and rows of grand and gorgeous lime
trees. Lining both sides of this splendid thoroughfare and extending three and a half miles, it’s an impressive sight to behold. In fact, it is said to be the second longest avenue of lime trees in Europe, after Clumber Park in Nottinghamshire. But then you’ll notice something else – a big section of trees wrapped in yellow ribbons. These 100-year-old trees have been marked to be felled and soon this historic avenue will be left looking stark and sad. Sheffield is famous – amongst other things – for being an exceptionally green city that is proud of its heritage. So why is Sheffield City Council acting in a way that flies in the face of these values? Rebecca Hammond, who leads the Save Rivelin Valley Road, Hillsborough and Wadsley Trees campaign group, said: “Out of the 31 marked to be felled, about 26 trees were because of pavement damage, surface damage or – and this is illogical – the roots might be damaged because of the resurfacing. 42 Sixer | www.sixermagazine.co.uk
“That’s like saying, ‘While I’m doing this DIY job, I might cut my finger and it might get infected, so I’m just going to amputate my hand’ rather than saying, ‘Let’s work carefully around the tree and if there is damage we’ll monitor the tree and see what happens.’ Although they say felling is the last resort, obviously it isn’t.” In 2012, Sheffield City Council signed a 25-year private finance initiative (PFI) deal with contractors Amey to transform Sheffield’s roads “from some of the worst, to some of the best in the country.” However, it quickly became apparent that the scheme was not all it was cracked up to be. Around 6,000 trees all over the city have already been targeted, and it’s not just the council’s strange reasons for felling the trees that is frustrating – it’s also the secrecy surrounding the contract. Though the contract has been published, crucial sections have been censored due to their “commercial sensitivity”, meaning only a handful of people are aware of its full content. Andrew Stringer, a member of the Save Rivelin Valley Road group, said: “The whole @SixerRMC
problem with the PFI, is that it takes accountability away. Amey now has a 25-year monopoly on all street works in the city. “They can do what they want because there is no democratic control over the company. The contract has control – not Sheffield City Council.” This has only fuelled the anger of protestors, already incensed by the recent debacle over trees on Rustlings Road. In a move condemned by residents and politicians alike, including MP Nick Clegg, the council and Amey staged a large-scale surprise raid in the early hours of 17 November 2016, heavily supported by police officers. Residents awoke to the sound of chainsaws and cars being towed away to make room for the felling, while several arrests were made when protestors took to the street. Despite widespread calls for the veil of secrecy to be lifted, the council has persistently dodged the question of how much the operation cost. Back in December 2015, The Independent Tree Panel was set up by the council to discuss those roads where more than 50 per cent of residents disagreed with the felling of
FEATURE
trees – Rustlings Road being one of them. Rivelin Valley Road was referred to the tree panel around a similar time. Councillor Bryan Lodge, cabinet member for environment at Sheffield City Council, said: “The Independent Tree Panel is looking at the trees on Rivelin Valley Road. We have not yet received its report so are unable to provide definite plans or timescales at this stage. We will provide more information as the process continues. “We have taken on board comments, good and bad, over the past year and I want people in Sheffield to know that we will use this feedback to inform how we work to maintain and improve Sheffield’s streets – for now and future generations. Where trees are removed we will replace them.” Despite these attempts to reassure locals, it’s going to be another 100 years before we see the stunning canopy on Rivelin Valley Road we see today, which currently helps to reduce air pollution and provides a corridor for wildlife. With the council and campaign groups at a stalemate, where do we go from here? “We’re not asking for anything hugely radical, we’re just asking for good practice to be implemented in Sheffield like it is elsewhere,” said Rebecca. “Flexipave is an alternative pavement surface used elsewhere and some cities routinely use CAVAT (Capital Asset Value for Amenity Tree) to assess and determine how to manage trees. In Hounslow, they only
remove trees that are dead, dying or dangerous. If they can do it there, why can’t we do it in Sheffield?” Councillor Adam Hanrahan, the Liberal Democrat councillor for Crookes and Crosspool added: “I’m keen to support any local community that wants assistance in trying to save their trees. There’s not a Lib Dem tree campaign, there is a tree campaign that the Lib Dem group are willing to support in a number of ways.
“Protests should always be an available course of action. The more we force the administration to talk about these issues, the more we force them to confront what they are doing. Then they will have to change their behaviour.” Join the Save Rivelin Valley Road, Hillsborough and Wadsley Trees group on Facebook or for more information about Sheffield Tree Action Groups, visit www.savesheffieldtrees.org.uk.

LEAVING A LEGACY TO SHEFFIELD CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL WILL HELP A CHILD’S LIFE – IT REALLY IS A GIFT OF LIFE. heffield Children’s Hospital is one of four stand-alone specialist children’s hospitals in the UK and provides world-class care for children all over Yorkshire and beyond. The skill of staff and the courage of patients and their families helps to make it an incredible place – but at The Children’s Hospital Charity, we’ll never stop striving to make it better. There are so many ways in which you can support the charity; one of the most significant ways you can help is leaving a gift in your will or create a will with Irwin Mitchell who will offer a discount when you quote The Children’s Hospital Charity, as well as make an instant donation to the charity. For 17-year-old Ebony Taylor, an incredibly generous gift, left by Sheffield local Betty in her will, has made all the difference to her treatment. Ebony, from Doncaster, has been treated at the hospital for epilepsy since 2012 and needs regular scans to monitor the activity in her brain. She was the first patient to benefit from a fully digital intraoperative 3T MRI scanner, partially funded by a £845,273 donation made by Betty. When Betty passed away she wanted to remember the hospital – a cause she had
S
championed all her life – in her estate. Her staggering once in a lifetime gift means that patients like Ebony will benefit from the most up to date technology possible and can get better in an environment designed with them in mind. Every penny donated through a legacy really does make a difference. Legacies also help to fund up to £250,000 of research into the prevention and cure of childhood illnesses and disease every single year. One of these projects developed a pioneering screening programme which detects rare life-threatening diseases in babies. Thanks to a successful pilot study leg by Sheffield Children’s Hospital, all new-born babies in England will be screened for four additional rare but serious conditions. The early detection and treatment of these conditions helps to give children the best possible start in life. Leaving a legacy through your will could make a life-saving difference for the children in our care – it really is the gift of life. To find out how to make a legacy donation or how you can create a discounted will through our partners Irwin Mitchell, contact support@tchc.org.uk.

LEAVE A LASTING LEGACY
A kind-hearted widow Betty, left a staggering once in a lifetime £845,273 to The Children’s Hospital Charity in her Will. Her legacy helped fund a £2.3million state-of-the art MRI scanner which will save children’s lives with neurological conditions for years to come. Any gift large or small really does make a difference.

TRAVEL
The Matterhorn
TOUR DE FORCE
CHRIS WILSON STAYS ON THE MOVE BY TRAIN, BUS AND BOAT TO SEE THE SIGHTS IN SWITZERLAND. hatever happened to the Grand Tour? Back in the 17th century, wealthy English gentlemen would spend several months travelling across Europe, accruing knowledge and purchasing beautiful antiques and carpets to furnish their country estates back home. Nowadays, even if budgets are not an issue, we tend to settle for a single location. Unpack, head for the pool, and return home a fortnight later, several shades darker but no wiser. It’s a habit that has not gone unnoticed among our continental cousins. As I checked in to one hotel for a single night’s stay on a whistlestop tour of Switzerland, my host was vexed about the holiday habits of the archetypal Brit abroad. “Why do you stay in one place? You should see more of the country you are staying in,” I was told. I didn’t need the lecture; she was preaching to the converted. Have suitcase on wheels will travel…that’s my motto. Mind you, it does make it a lot easier when the country you are visiting is Switzerland, where the trains, buses and boats always run on time and itineraries can be planned with total confidence. Just to make the travel easier, you can buy

a Swiss Pass for unlimited travel on eight consecutive days on railways, boats and most alpine postbuses, covering a network of 16,000km. The Swiss Pass also allows a half price reduction on all privately owned funicular and mountain railways and free entrance to 450 museums. It really is the ultimate ticket to ride. On arrival at Zurich airport, it was a short stroll to the adjoining railway station and half an hour by train to the sleepy town of Kusnacht and the Romantik Seehotel Sonne. Dating back to 1641, the picturesque location on Lake Zurich was mesmerising and the hotel’s private bathing area was irresistible on a scorching July day. The water was crystal clear – very refreshing and with nothing but the occasional steam boat gliding by to make ripples on the water – and a quick dip was Grimsel Hospiz

the perfect way to unwind. Dinner on the terrace, watching the sun set and the lights from small towns across the bay start to twinkle, added to my sense of wellbeing. Food and wine, I realised, was going to be a major plus point. Throughout the tour I ate incredibly well on outstanding local produce including home-smoked salmon, veal, river fish and berries. The wine, meanwhile, was a revelation. It is produced in all 26 Cantons, although not in sufficient volume that you are likely to find it imported to your local supermarket. So, make the most of it: many patriotic bars and restaurants stock only Swiss wines, and that is no hardship when the choice includes creamy sparkling Cremands, flinty Rieslings and smooth rich Merlots. After that first night, I awakened to a ridiculously perfect chocolate-box view of mountains, lake, blue skies and fluffy clouds. So I checked out with some sadness, but I had an itinerary to follow and a series of trains, boats and buses to catch. The next few days passed in a blur of activity with fresh highlights around every corner. Whatever our mode of transport, the views were amazing and if some, even for
TRAVEL
first time visitor, were eerily familiar, it might have been because some of Switzerland’s most picturesque scenery is much loved by TV and film location scouts. So, at various times, we found ourselves in the same spot as some of fiction’s most memorable action scenes involving legendary heroes and villains. On one train journey through the Beernese Oberland region, we found ourselves looking up at the Reichenbach Falls, where Sherlock Holmes and his arch rival Professor Moriarty fought and perished in a dramatic death plunge onto the rocks below… until a disapproving public demanded that logic be defied and Holmes was resurrected in a later story. Perhaps the most spectacular hotel on our tour was the Grimsel Hospiz, perched at 2000m in the middle of bleakly beautiful rocky landscape on the turquoise waters of an artificial lake which is built on top of a hydro-electric dam. We travelled by train and bus, then the hotel’s mini bus took us through the dizzying steep mountain roads. It came as no surprise to learn that James Bond and Blofeld had battled it out on these very same twisting roads in On Her Majesty’s Secret Service. The hotel is accessible only by cable car in winter and is so remote that skiing is too dangerous. People come to revel in the luxurious hotel and watch the scenery. This being high summer, we simply drove on a road blasted through the rock, arriving at our mountain retreat not quite able to believe our eyes. Don’t miss those views, but also don’t miss the wine cellar of which the owners are rightly proud. A more sedate mode of arrival, though just as exciting in its own way, is the steam boat to Lucerne, which is worth a walking tour for its hidden alleys, teeming town squares and beautifully preserved 13th century city walls. Summer in Switzerland means there are, of course, mountains to climb, and it was appropriate that we ended our truncated version of the Grand Tour in Zermatt, the town that started it all. The Matterhorn dominates the view here and there are wonderful summer walks for all levels of fitness.

The Reichenback Falls
However, if you simply want to take in the view, there is a train up to Gornergat at an altitude of 3,089m. We were staying at the Monte Rosa hotel, which was the mountaineering base of Edward Whymper, the man who made the first successful ascent of the Matterhorn. Legend has it that Queen Victoria disapproved of such dangerous leisure pursuits and pronounced that it must stop. To anyone with a remotely rebellious taste for adventure this was just the incentive needed – and hardy hikers have been coming to Zermatt to tackle the Matterhorn and the less challenging lower ranges ever since. Zermatt is a quirky town. Local farmers still drive their goats down the main street every day, but the glitzy bars and restaurants are testament to the fact that this is one of Switzerland’s most fashionable resorts, winter and summer. But while the town may be buzzing the one thing you won’t hear is the roar of the internal combustion engine. Cars are banned, although you can always find an electric buggy at the station to transport you and your luggage to the hotel. And that seems a suitably strange final stop on this truncated version of the Grand Tour.
Swiss International Air Lines UK & Ireland to Switzerland SWISS operates more than 170 weekly flights to Switzerland from London Heathrow, London City, Manchester, Birmingham, Edinburgh (seasonal during summer) and Dublin from as little as £55 one-way* (Economy Light fare only includes hand luggage). HEALTH
AFTER Vicky Davies says she never felt like she was on a diet with Slimming World
Lose weight and feel great
BEFORE
TO CELEBRATE THE START OF 2017, SLIMMING EXPERTS FROM SHEFFIELD ARE READY TO HELP LOCAL PEOPLE MAKE THEIR HEALTHY NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTIONS A REALITY. Lori Kitchin joined her local Slimming World group in Hillsborough and after losing weight and gaining a whole load of confidence. She decided that she wanted to help others and has now trained as a consultant for Slimming World and is opening her own group at Stanwood Methodist Church on Friday 20 January at 9:30am. She says: “Obesity is becoming such a huge issue across the UK. When I first joined Slimming World as a member, I never dreamed that I would end up helping other people to lose weight but now I just can’t wait to get started. “After losing 3st 10lbs, it’s a privilege for me to be able to pass on the experience, insight and understanding that

helped me, so that I can give my members the support they need to get to target. “It all starts with feeling that you’re not alone. I couldn’t have done it without the weekly help, encouragement and understanding of my own consultant and group. As someone who has lost weight, I know the challenges people can face, which is why, along with the group, I will be there to support every one of my members all the way to their chosen target weight. “Setting targets, sharing recipes and other ideas, and working together as a group to overcome challenges and celebrate success is so important to a successful journey. That’s why, at my Slimming World group, there’ll be tons of support, encouragement and fun.” Jo Groves who runs Slimming World’s Stannington group and manages north Sheffield as a team developer, says: “Slimming World Consultants are chosen for their positive outlook and because they genuinely care about the health and happiness of others. With consultants’ experiences of being successful Slimming World members, their kind and warm personalities and great senses of humour, I just know it will be an amazing
support to members, cheering them all the way to their target weight.” Vicky Davies who runs a couple of the Hillsborough groups says: “Like a lot of slimmers, I had tried to lose weight so many times by following numerous diets, but they were never sustainable because I’d always get tired of restricting what I ate. “I thought I was destined to struggle with my weight for the rest of my life, but when I came to Slimming World it was different. I never felt like I was on a diet. The eating plan encourages you to eat lots of tasty, filling foods like pasta, rice, potatoes and lean meat and fish, you are never hungry and no foods are banned so there’s no deprivation. “Becoming more active has helped me maintain my four stone weight loss. Our Body Magic programme takes the threat out of activity by showing people – many who have unpleasant memories of being forced to take part in activity at school - how they can build activity into their daily routine without having to take up traditional forms of exercise like going to the gym or running. “Everything counts from walking, to gardening, to washing the car. As a consultant, it’s my role to create that warm, supportive atmosphere to get people sharing their ideas and experiences to help others - it’s going to be great fun!” See Slimming World’s advert for your local groups or visit www.slimmingworld.co.uk.

LOOKING BACK
JANUARY HANNAH SANDERS LOOKS BACK AT SOME OF THE PEOPLE WE’VE FEATURED OVER THE LAST 12 MONTHS.
2016 in Sixerland I
t’s been another busy year at Sixer. We’ve met some fascinating people and heard about the incredible things they have done. Here’s a look at the highlights that made 2016 so special.
January Walkley-born tenor Rossano Sal talked to us about his exciting career with The Magic of Mantovani Orchestra. Mantovani and his original orchestra rarely used vocalists but when percussionist Paul Barratt saw Rossano perform he knew he wanted to find a way to incorporate Rossano into the Mantovani Orchestra. Rossano had a busy year this year, with performances in August at the Gilbert and Sullivan Festival in Harrogate as well as his performance of Monty Python in June. However he still has more challenges on his plate for 2017 and one day would love to be on the West End stage.
February Sixer writer Phoebe Seymour met up and coming indie rockers Fairbarn. The band have built up a good fan base and after supporting Carousel and then the Seamonsters they had their first headline gig in January playing to 200 people. The band has recorded six tracks that they have written themselves which are available on soundcloud and they are really keen to release some more of their own material. They have had an exciting 2016 and whatever happens in the upcoming year they are certainly ones to keep an eye on.
March We spoke to fitness fanatics Gay Fletcher and Andrea Barber who set up a community running group, Strideout, in 2011. This group 68 Sixer | www.sixermagazine.co.uk
FEBRUARY
has six organised sessions a week in S10, S6 and S35 and, has even won the England Athletics Award for Yorkshire and Humberside Run Group twice now. The group inspired two women - Samantha Patrick and Vicky Bridges- to complete a full year of sporting fund-raising activities for The Children’s Hospital Charity. Gay said “I think their dedication and commitment has been outstanding.”
May Some of the world’s best musicians were heading for Bradfield for the internationally acclaimed music festival. Audiences were treated to performances from the Ensemble Berlin, Julian and Jiaxin Lloyd Webber and pianist John Lenehan. Sheffield’s own Phillippa Hobbs, of the Woodwind Ensemble of the Band of the RAF College got to be part of the festival this year.
MARCH
June The spotlight was on the opening of Fox Valley North, Sheffield’s newest retail destination. Fox Valley is host to some new retailer names as well as an impressive line-up of national retailers and of course some fantastic independent stores too. Mark Dransfield said “This is undoubtedly our flagship development and it is a completely different and unique retail destination.” @SixerRMC
MAY
LOOKING BACK
JUNE
July
August
The EPPiC theatre and its owners, the Ecclesfield Priory Players were in the spotlight. The group bought the former Trinity Methodist Church in 1979 when it was derelict and began transforming it right away. Now the group puts on three productions a year in February, May and October as well as putting on fundraising coffee mornings every Saturday and even live performances and poetry readings to help attract more visitors. At the moment they have around 30 members but are always looking for new members to join the fold.
Sixer’s Molly McGreevy spoke to Kathleen May who was one of the 400 ‘women of steel’ commemorated earlier in 2016. Two thousand people showed gratitude for Kathleen and the women of steel when they received the recognition they deserved for manning the steelworks in World War Two. The women were awarded medals engraved ‘with thanks to our wartime Women of Steel’ alongside a statue by Martin Jenkins which now stands next to the City Hall.
September We saw the life-saving addition of the new Helipad at the Northern General Hospital (NGH). This was made possible by Sheffield Hospital Charities and the generosity of local people and businesses. The helipad has been serving a population of 1.8million people covering South Yorkshire, Humber, Derbyshire and the East Midlands and patients that land at the NGH are now only a trolley push away from vital care.
JULY
October SEPTEMBER
We spoke to John Burkhill, the Sheffield local legend known as ‘the man with the pram’ whose new book is raising money for Macmillan. ‘Distance No Object’ which is cowritten with RMC’s Adam Kay, is full of memories and pictures from John’s own archive with a dose of Yorkshire humour too. It shows the beginning of his fundraising journey to 2016. His journey began after a personal double tragedy, the death of his daughter after a routine operation followed by his wife from cancer, but it spurred him on to help others.
November
OCTOBER AUGUST
November saw the remarkable story of the Gill family’s Bradfield Brewery, as told in a new book published by RMC Media. ‘Mine’s A Pint: The story of Bradfield Brewery’ tells of the family’s early days as dairy farmers to the present day with Bradfield beers being stocked in pubs all across the country. The book written by RMC’s Adam Kay features some stunning images from photographer Tim Green It is a heart-warming story of Sheffield family done good.

Tips for a healthier 2017 SUE POWERS, A PERSONAL TRAINER WITH 25 YEARS’ EXPERIENCE IN THE HEALTH AND FITNESS INDUSTRY, OFFERS ADVICE TO THOSE WHO REALLY WANT TO GET FIT. our health and fitness regime should NOT just be a new year’s resolution but a way of life... and this does not mean spending hours at the gym every day. There are many other ways of improving your fitness and becoming healthier. Going to a gym a couple of times a week, or any other activity that elevates your heart rate, will of course have benefits. The intensity of your exercise/activity depends on your individual health or fitness level. It is important to start gently and increase the intensity as you become fitter. This will help prevent injuries and encourage you to continue your exercise/activity programme. I would recommend you focus on the three aspects of fitness:
Y
1. Stronger muscles (resistance training) 2. Stronger heart and lungs (cardiovascular exercise) 3. Flexibility (to move more freely) Although exercise will burn more calories, if your goal is to lose weight you will need to look at your diet by consulting a professional nutritionist, who will work alongside you on your exercise/activity regime, and give you the best possible results. New Sheffield Wednesday book is a page-turner It’s been an exciting first half of the football season, with Sheffield Wednesday pressing for promotion back into the Premiership for the first time since their relegation almost two decades ago. But if there is also a touch of pessimism among Owls fans as they watch the progress being made by Carlos Carvalhal’s men, you can’t blame them... the modern era has been tough for the team from Sheffield 6, with relegations, financial hardship and the horrors of the Hillsborough disaster to contend with. Not a happy story perhaps, but certainly a compelling one, and it is brought vividly to life in a new book by local author Tom Whitworth called Owls: Sheffield Wednesday Through The Modern Era (Pitch Publishing £12.99). There is much compelling subject matter, and the author has certainly done his homework, talking to many of the key players about the incidents that have shaped the club’s recent history. From the almost-glory days of the early 1990s and the team of Chris Waddle, John Sheridan and David Hirst to Paolo Di Canio’s pushing over of a referee, terrible transfer dealings, relegations and a life in the lower league wilderness, there is no shortage of incident. That, followed by League One play-off success, moves by the club to sue its own fans, winding up orders and High Court appearances, is followed by club-saving takeovers and a well-funded, entertaining and long-awaited revival, which makes this a real page-turner and also ensures the reader finishes on a high note.
Wharncliffe Side School spread Christmas joy Christmas is a good time to think about others and spread some festive joy, so the pupils at Wharncliffe Side Primary School decided to give something back to the local community by putting on a performance of “A Little Bird Told Me…” to pensioners in the village. It has become a tradition for the children to put on a Christmas play for the community and their performance was part of an afternoon of entertainment. The senior citizens also enjoyed live music by Janet on the ukulele and the Oughtibridge Brass Band, who played all their favourite Christmas carols. Guests were then invited to stay for afternoon tea. Mrs Harrision, the music co-ordinator at the school, was impressed by the number of pupils who wanted to give up their time to rehearse, practise and perform the play, and did so with such enthusiasm and festive cheer.

Panto players raise money for St Luke’s Hospice
Welcome To My Office – Views from the roofs
They’re behind you… and they’re after your cash. A year of fundraising by city theatre company Stannington Players in support of St Luke’s Hospice has reached its climax with a production of panto favourite Cinderella. Donations from the audience and proceeds from sales of Our Cow Molly ice cream raised more than £265. Added to the amount already raised throughout the year, meant a final total of £775.97. “This is a great gift for St Luke’s and one that is absolutely in keeping with Christmas and the spirit of panto,” said hospice community fundraising assistant Noni Bryson. “We’d like to thank both the Stannington Players and their audiences for being so generous and making such a difference to the lives of our patients.” To find out more about St. Luke’s Hospice, visit www.stlukeshospice.org.uk.
Simon Slater of Slater’s Aerial Services has a different ‘office view’ to most of us – a rooftop vista of Sheffield. Last month, he was admiring the view in a very different part of the world. We asked you to send in your answers for the chance to win a Christmas hamper. All correct answers were put into a prize draw and a winner was chosen at random. Congratulations to Ann Benn who correctly guessed where Simon was last month – Giotto’s bell tower in Florence, Italy. Now back in Sheffield, can you guess exactly where in the S6 area Simon was when he took these photographs? To find out, follow @SlatersAerials and @SixerRMC on Twitter – the answer will be revealed at the end of the month.
WHO DO YOU THINK YOU ARE? Have you been researching your family tree and discovered some interesting ancestors? Sixer is asking people from Sheffield 6 to come forward with their stories for our next feature. Contact Phoebe Seymour on 0114 250 6300 or email phoebe.seymour@rmcmedia.co.uk.
NEW HEALTH AND FITNESS COMPANY TO OPEN AT FOX VALLEY Health and fitness company Fit20 are set to open their flagship studio exclusively at Fox Valley this month. The multi-award-winning company is franchising worldwide and the studio at Fox Valley is the first to open in the UK. Fit20 offer unique 20 minute work-outs aimed at people who find the gym too timeconsuming. The concept is backed by extensive scientific research and development, and has won awards such as the FD Gazelles 2015 award for the fastest growing franchise business in Holland. Founder, Walter Wendel, was also awarded runner up for the EY Entrepreneur of the Year award. The work-outs consist of slow and controlled high intensity training, which means no sweat and no need to change into gym clothes, making it the perfect work out to fit into a busy schedule or a working day. Sessions are taken one-to-one with a fully-trained personal trainer using the latest technology to track results and progress.
