Many of you instantly spotted that last month’s photo was Rivelin Valley Road, which was built in 1905 providing work for 176 unemployed men. The following year 700 lime trees were planted and we showed young Bessie Walker taking a walk in the snow in 1920. Regular Sixer correspondent Joe Castle instantly recognised the location and pointed out that the trees in question, now mature and rather magnificent, are at the centre of the disputed tree-felling being undertaken by Sheffield Council as part of a £2.2bn PFI highway maintenance contract.

Get on track MAKE GOOD ON YOUR INTENTIONS BY CHOOSING RESOLUTIONS THAT ARE REALISTIC AND ACHIEVABLE, WRITES PHOEBE SEYMOUR. very January, we set ourselves resolutions with the best of intentions. And yet by February, most of us start to slip back into our old ways. Last year, Bupa published a poll based on 2,000 British people which found that out of those who said they would be setting a new year’s resolution for 2017, half were not confident they would stick to it. With this kind of attitude, it’s no surprise we fail to keep them. So what is it about our resolutions that leaves us feeling as though they are unattainable? Bupa found that around one in five people also admitted to setting overly ambitious and potentially unsustainable goals, while psychology professor Peter Herman and his colleagues have identified what they call the ‘false hope syndrome’, meaning our resolutions tend to be significantly unrealistic and out of alignment with our internal view of ourselves and so our minds reject them. From losing weight to saving money, each resolution requires us to change our behaviour, which ultimately means changing our mind-sets.

Here are some tips to help you keep your mind on track and to help make your resolutions more achievable this year. 28 Sixer | www.sixermagazine.co.uk
BE REALISTIC If your resolution is too ambitious, it will be unrealistic to achieve. Your chances of success are much greater when you channel all your energy into changing just one aspect of your behaviour. So rather than vowing to lose weight and cut out drinking, concentrate on lowering your calorie intake and doing more exercise – and allow yourself the odd glass of red from time to time. Diets are about everything in moderation, and the same goes for your goals. BE SPECIFIC The more specific you can be, the more you can break your resolution down into smaller, more manageable goals. Another thing which tends to happen with non-specific goals is that they are easier to put off and you’ll be tempted to keep moving your goal posts. Instead of saying, ‘I want to lose weight this year’, say ‘I want to lose two stone this year’ so you will have a clear target and know when you have successfully met it. @SixerRMC

When it comes to our resolutions, many of us find it much easier to talk the talk, than we do committing to the walk. By recording your goal, you make a conscious commitment to working toward achieving it. Write down your resolution or even make a chart where you can track your progress regularly and place it somewhere it can easily be seen such as above your desk where you work, on your bathroom mirror or on your kitchen fridge. DON’T GIVE UP
Finally, if you do come up against some obstacles or fail to meet your short-term goals, don’t beat yourself up about it, and most importantly, don’t let it discourage you.
MEASURE IT
Another reason the resolution ‘I want to lose two stone’ works so well is that it can be tracked and regularly measured. Goals that have deadlines are also a great way to motivate you. ‘I want to lose two stone by my son’s wedding in July’ is therefore a more effective measurement of your success, while, ‘I want to lose four pounds each month’ is even better, as it can be measured regularly and in the short-term – just remember to keep it realistic. MAKE IT EXCITING
People are often put off their resolutions because they can feel like a chore. You may happily tuck into a bowl of vegetables and quinoa for a day or two, but after two weeks of eating the same meal, not so much. If you are aiming to eat healthily, create a varied and interesting menu. The same applies for long-term goals. Instead of saying, ‘I want to save money’, adding a reason such as, ‘so I can take my children to Disneyland’ gives you something positive and specific to look forward to.

And the new alternatives, though a little strange sounding on the face of it, claim to offer myriad health benefits and are of course environmentally sustainable. Here, Southside takes a look some of the health food trends predicted to be huge in 2018, and reveals what could well be set to become your new nutrition normal.
Hemp Seeds These small seeds are rich in essential fatty acids and polyunsaturated fatty acids, including omega-3s, which can help fight coronary heart disease, cancer, and even symptoms of depression. Hemp seeds are also a rich source of the polyunsaturated fatty acid gamma linolenic acid, or GLA, which has been known to help with a number of maladies, ranging from allergies and attention deficit disorder, to lowering cholesterol levels.
Chicories Haven’t heard of this one? Chicories are those bitter winter greens like endive and escarole or purple radicchio. They are a good source of vitamin C and may also help boost heart health.
POMEGRANATE Pomegranates are known for their antioxidants and are an excellent source of fiber and vitamins C and K.
Matcha Chock full of polyphenols, matcha is lauded for its anti-aging properties. Importantly, it may help lower the risk of certain cancers and heart disease. And if you’re trying to stay focused on your goals this year, sip on this. Matcha is known to boost mental alertness too without the jitters you might get from other caffeinated drinks.
Activated Charcoal Activated charcoal can help you get purer skin and whiter teeth, as well as absorbing the standing tannins found in drinks like coffee and red wine.
Açai
SEAWEED Unlike their land-bound counterparts, sea-grown vegetables are packed with omega-3 fatty acids, which may prevent sudden heart attack and stroke. Seaweed is also full of important minerals, such as bone-friendly calcium and magnesium, as well as iron, potassium, iodine and zinc.

Native to the rainforests of South America, the açai is a small purple berry that has been touted as a weight-loss and anti-aging aid. The fruit contains very high levels of antioxidants in the form of anthocyanins, which help fight cancer and heart disease.

GOJI BERRIES Goji berries have become a common sight on supermarket shelves, and for good reason: they contain a lot of vitamin C. Native to Tibet and Inner Mongolia, these orange-red tangy berries have been used by Chinese herbalists for centuries to treat visual ailments and poor circulation and to help boost the immune system. Scientific research has yet to support such claims, but there’s no denying that goji berries are rich in plant-based antioxidants and compounds.
Chia Seeds Native to Mexico, these nutrient-rich seeds have become all the rage among superfood seekers. And it’s no surprise - chia seeds are packed with omega-3 fatty acids, fiber and calcium.
Nutritional Yeast Not to be confused with active dry or brewer’s yeast, nutritional yeast is made from deactivated yeast and has no leavening power. It’s a great source of protein and fiber and is also among the only vegan-friendly sources of vitamin B12, which is essential for normal brain and nervous-system function but found mostly in meat and dairy products.
Black Garlic Black garlic has long been prized for its health benefits, but it became widely available in Western markets only a few years ago. The black bulb is created by fermenting raw garlic through prolonged exposure to heat and humidity, giving it a sweet, mellow flavour and an inky hue. In addition to the sulfuric compounds that provide garlic with its heart-healthy and anticancer benefits, the fermented cloves are a source of important probiotics.
Kale
GREEN TEA This ages-old health secret has been used as a natural remedy for everything from cancer to heart disease. The secret to this delicious drink? Antioxidants. The main superhero here is Epigallocatechin gallate, or EGCG, a phytochemical that slows irregular cell growth, which could potentially help prevent the growth of some cancers.
Move over spinach, you've got some fierce competition. Kale contains a type of phytonutrient that appears to lessen the occurrence of a wide variety of cancers, including breast and ovarian. Though scientists are still studying why this happens, they believe the phytonutrients in kale trigger the liver to produce enzymes that neutralize potentially cancer-causing substances.
Salmon Salmon contains omega-3 fatty acids, which the body cannot produce by itself. These fatty acids reduce inflammation, improve circulation and increase the ratio of good to bad cholesterol. Salmon is also a rich source of selenium, which helps prevent cell damage, and several B vitamins.
QUINOA This teeny-tiny, grain-like seed packs some serious nutritional prowess. With a mild, nutty flavour and a texture similar to rice or couscous, quinoa is one of the only grains or seeds that provides all nine essential amino acids our bodies can't produce themselves. And it's filled with protein - eight grams per one-cup serving, to be exact.

YOUNGSTERS CHAY AND FALLON RAISE THOUSANDS TO HELP LUNG DISEASE SUFFERERS LIKE THEIR GRANDAD, GORDON. In the swim: Fallon, Gordon and Chay
LITTLE SUPERSTARS he young grandchildren of a lung disease patient were so touched by the story of his care, that they raised thousands of pounds for the Sheffield Hospitals Charity backed group which has supported him. Gordon Harrison, aged 60, from Dronfield, was diagnosed with chronic and progressive lung disease: Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis (IPF) five years ago, leaving him breathless and relying on a home oxygen supply. His grandchildren, Chay (nine) and Fallon (six) raised £2,000 for Sheffield Hospitals Charity to help fund the Sheffield Interstitial Lung Disease (ILD) Support Group, which has supported Gordon and his wife Lynn throughout his diagnosis and care. Gordon said: “At the start of my diagnosis my symptoms were easily manageable, but over time I have become more and more breathless, and I’m now on a waiting list for a lung transplant. “The seriousness of the illness, its progressive nature and my long term prognosis has required lots of soul searching and management. I could not have done any of these things without the support of my wife Lynn, our family, our network of friends and the Sheffield Interstitial Lung Disease (ILD) Support Group. “The group was formed so that patients can meet up together outside the hospital environment and share experiences of coping and living with the disease. It is focussed on mutual support, learning and research. It ensures that everyone remains positive and can maintain the best quality of

life - and it works. “I could not be more proud of Chay and Fallon. The idea of doing something to help me and the support group was exclusively theirs. The last length of their epic swim marked a seminal moment for our family and one which we will never forget.” Chay and Fallon’s mum, Cheryl, said: “The Sheffield ILD Support Group has been a great help to Gordon and my mum. It’s really important to have the opportunity to chat with other people who are, or have been, in a similar situation to yourself and who can provide practical advice and answer those difficult questions that only people who’ve been there can do. “The kids decided to do a sponsored swim to try and raise money for their Grandad as they wanted to help him get better. They are both extremely close to Gordon and look up to him a great deal. We all share days out and holidays together. “Chay swam 2km and Fallon swam 1.6km – the equivalent of 144 lengths. Neither of them had done anywhere near this distance before, we were amazed. They are little superstars and we’re so very proud of them.” As well as Chay and Fallon’s fundraising, Jonathan Hardwick at Ryehill Wealth Management, who is Gordon’s financial advisor, donated a further £2,000, and an extra £1,000 from other sources brought the total to £5,000.

That’s why Steve and Helena Lelew decided to get a head start, with the Alevere Therapy at G&M Healthcare. Dr Grace and her team are on hand throughout the process, providing a friendly, supportive and professional service. “We’d lost weight in such a short space of time, and once we’d got down to our baseline weights it was easier to keep it up,” says Steve. “We now have much more energy and more motivation to exercise.” Steve had tried diets and slimming groups in the past, and even a similar weight loss treatment five years ago, but the weight had slowly crept back on. “I’m approaching 60 now and one thing that really motivated me was a few years ago when I went to an event with my twin brother. and someone said, ‘Is that your older brother?’ It was then I realised that being heavier can make you look much older.” This time, Steve was more determined and committed than ever before. And doing the treatment and diet plan together with his wife, meant they were able to support each other to stay on track. “I didn’t like the idea of a gastric band, but I wanted something with quick results, that would keep the weight off long term.” “They do three things. First of all you have an ultrasound where they find and deal with those bits you can’t lose through exercise. Second, they use an LPG machine to give you a skin tightening treatment. They then give you vitamin supplements and instructions of what you can eat. “Our therapists Sarah and Leyanne have been really nice and helpful. They’ve been on the plan themselves and it was reassuring to have regular check-ups once a week. “We also saw Dr Grace at regular intervals, who was very thorough and informative about the programme. We had lots of tests and she

explained why each stage of the diet was important.” The whole process took 12 weeks, in which time, Steve had lost 3st 2lb and Helena had lost 2st. This meant Steve had gone down to 13st 2lb, whilst Helena was delighted to ditch her size 14 wardrobe in exchange for a slim size 8. Now at what Steve calls their ‘baseline weights’, managing their diet has become much easier. “I didn’t used to like vegetables, but after being weaned off the supplements, I actually craved them! Now we go to the supermarket and we know what a healthy trolley looks like, so it’s been a massive education too. “I used to see slim people and think ‘I want to look like that’ and now I do. Helena says she feels like a new person. I actually came home the other day and was surprised to find her boxing. We’ve been getting so many compliments – I feel younger!” And it’s not just their appearances and attitude to fitness that have changed. It’s improved their general health too. “We feel more positive. Our cholesterols and blood pressures are both down, which is amazing!” Despite being more motivated than ever to keep the pounds off, Steve says he still gets to give into temptation from time to time. “When I’ve been low and started creeping down to the fridge, Helena will stop me. Although you can get away with the odd treat and bounce back.” Looking back over his whole weight loss journey, would Steve recommend Alevere to other people? “As long as you stay committed and fully embrace all of their advice, it’s well worthwhile. A new era for G&M Lunt EXPERIENCED FUNERAL DIRECTOR MARTYN JOINS OLD-ESTABLISHED FAMILY FIRM. he clocks may be going back but things are moving forward at G&M Lunt, family funeral directors for over 80 years. Michael Lunt has announced that Martyn Askew, who is Woodseats born and bred with over 40 years in the profession, has joined the company as director of funeral services, responsible for the day to day running of the company after many years’ experience managing the John Fairest Funeral Homes. G & M Lunt was established by George Lunt in 1932 with his wife Mabel, son Jack and daughter Mary, who joined the company as the business grew. Michael joined in 1969. In 1976 George passed away and Mary’s son Andrew joined in 1985. Sadly Jack passed away in 1987, so Michael and Andrew ran the business together until Andrew retired. Michael carried on running the business for many years with the support of his dedicated staff. Now time has come to hand over the reins to Martyn, a friend for over 40 years and an outstanding funeral director. Michael Lunt will still be actively involved in the business on a day to day basis.

BITS &S PIECE New records mark Percy Pud’s 25th year This December, runners laced up their trainers as Sheffield’s most popular 10k race. the Percy Pud, returned with 2,519 athletes taking part. In its 25th year, the popular Loxley race in which all runners receive a Christmas pudding, took them along the picturesque Loxley Valley on the outskirts of Sheffield. For a second year in a row, both the male and female course records were broken, and each winner was given a £1,000 cheque. Local runner from the Hallamshire Harriers, Andrew Heyes, took 15 seconds off last year’s record, completing the course in 29:42. While Rio 2016 Olympic finalist Eilish McColgan finished in 32:32. Percy Pud will return once again for Christmas 2018.
Music at Wisewood Inn The Wisewood Inn is fast becoming one of the places to catch local musicians perform. The pub held two music nights before Christmas, featuring singer Lindsay Dracass and pianist Lewis Nitikman. The intimate Cellar Bar room was filled to capacity and the audience enjoyed a selection of ballads and a good few Christmas songs. Local photographer Andy Harris captured the magical event and commented on the fantastic atmosphere, as well as the delicious food. LEARN FRENCH THIS NEW YEAR Et Voila is a small private school of French, situated on Ben Lane/Dykes Hall crossroads, opposite Tesco Express - its colourful frontage is sure to catch your eye. Three national kickboxing titles for Sheffield
S6 EVENTS
Sheffield’s Powers Martial Arts has triumphed in the Premier Corporate K1 Kickboxing event, with three of its fighters scooping International Sport Kickboxing Association (IKSA) titles. The family event, sponsored by supply teacher recruitment specialist, PK Education, played host to a capacity crowd at the Mercure Hotel. It was a clean sweep for the martial arts centre, which won all of the categories it entered. Powers MAC fighter Blayne Armitage, who was sponsored by Sheffield-based PK Education, won an English ISKA title, while fellow Powers MAC fighters, Nicolae Pirogan and Nathan Riddle both scooped British ISKA titles. More than 50 young people from Powers Martial Arts took part in the daytime event, competing in a number of demo fights ahead of the five K1 kickboxing title fights Paul Powers, owner and founder of Stannington-based Powers Martial Arts Centre said: “Giving young people exposure to the benefits of martial arts is something I’m a big believer in. By hosting events in the daytime at weekends, and incorporating demo fights with youngsters aged 12 to 16 in the shows, we are able to make the sport as inclusive as possible.” Supply teacher agency PK Education works closely with Powers Martial Arts, providing martial arts training and personal development sessions to schools in South Yorkshire. PK Education has recently collaborated with Powers Martial Arts to give away a free training session to secondary schools in South Yorkshire and North East Derbyshire. Sixer: Looking back IT’S BEEN ANOTHER BUSY YEAR HERE AT SIXER. WE’VE MET SOME INTERESTING PEOPLE AND HEARD ABOUT THE INCREDIBLE THINGS THEY HAVE DONE. HERE’S A LOOK AT SOME OF THE HIGHLIGHTS THAT MADE 2017 SO SPECIAL. BY HANNAH SANDERS.

We began the year with a focus on Rebecca Hammond, the leader of Save Rivelin Valley Road, Hillsborough and Wadsley Trees campaign group. In 2012, Sheffield City Council signed a 25-year private finance initiative deal with contractors Amey to transform Sheffield’s roads “from some of the worst, to some of the best in the country.” Back in December 2015, The Independent Tree Panel was set up by the council to discuss those roads where more than 50 per cent of residents disagreed with the felling of trees. “Out of the 31 marked to be felled, about 26 trees were because of pavement damage, surface damage or – and this is illogical – the roots might be damaged because of the resurfacing. We’re not asking for anything hugely radical, we’re just asking for good practice to be implemented in Sheffield like it is elsewhere,” said Rebecca.
Here at Sixer in March, we were bike mad as the 2017 Tour de Yorkshire was just weeks away. Sponsored by Maserati, the tour offered a unique mix of Tour de France delivery, and combined with the Yorkshire hospitality and beautiful scenery it really was a day to remember. Taking place on the third and final day of the Tour de Yorkshire, stage three was a gruelling 194.5km ride with the journey starting in Bradford, moving towards Grassington via Ilkely before heading back down through Skipton, Keighley, Halifax and Huddersfield, to the finish line at Fox Valley.

Two-year-old Jordan Reid was diagnosed with childhood ATRT (atypical teratoid rhabdoid tumour) in summer 2016, a very rare, clinically aggressive tumour of the central nervous system, and, in April Sixer writer Rachel Martin talked to grandad Kevan Adams. He was reaching out for volunteers to help him create a back garden ‘oasis’ for his grandson. “Jordan comes alive when he’s outdoors,” said Kevan. “Towards the end of last year we decided to make a safe area outside of the house for him to play in, including a new playhouse. Being disabled myself, I knew I was going to have to ask a lot of people for help, but thanks to the kindness and generosity of the local community our vision is becoming a reality.”

Some of the world’s best musicians were tuning up for the internationally acclaimed Bradfield music festival in June. Celebrating its 20th anniversary, the festival was one to remember this year as some of the finest musicians including Austonley Brass took to the stage. Outstanding pianist Benjamin Grosvenor (left), along with singers Elizabeth Watts, Nicky Spence and Christopher Ainslee, also performed this year. In addition, the concert included recitals from 2017’s two recipients of the Festival Young Musician Awards, as identified by Sheffield Music Hub.

JULY
June shone the spotlight on both the Stannington Carnival and Oughtibridge Gala. This year Oughtibridge’s theme was inspired by the Legend of the Dragon of Wantley, and kicked off as usual with a parade through the village followed by the grand opening at Coronation Park. Stannington Carnival was full of the usual favourites, along with a range of new stalls and entertainment from a dog show to facepainting and meet and greets with popular Disney characters.
SEPTEMBER
Sheffield is the real ale capital of the world and to the discerning ale drinker it’s the public houses that, over the years, have put the city on the map. In July we looked back on some of these beloved establishments. Mark Liversage has produced a book entitled Closing Times, which focuses on some of these establishments and where they were then and now. Mark’s book is a follow on from his father’s, Michael Liversage: The A-Z of Sheffield Public Houses, published around 20 years ago.
OCTOBER
The spotlight was on Richard Dunk in September, as he and a team of six took on the challenge of swimming the Channel. Richard grew up with a love of swimming and making the lengthy journey across the Channel was one of his life ambitions. A few years ago he joined Yorkshire Outdoor Swimmers. The team of six undertook months of training and, before attempting the feat, each individual team member had to do a gruelling twohour qualifying swim in water with the low temperature of 12 degrees. They swam well over 20 miles which took 15 hours – three hours longer than planned.
NOVEMBER
October saw the remarkable story of Nathan Hill. When Nathan was 13 months old, he contracted a viral brain infection, which left him with learning difficulties and problems with both his sight and hearing. Nathan has always been determined to live an independent life, and after leaving formal education, he enrolled at Henshaws College in Harrogate, a charity supporting people living with sight loss and a range of other disabilities. In September 2014, Nathan’s Craft’s and Tea Room opened on Stannington Road. With the help of carer Sam Webster – a baker in her own right – Nathan makes lunches, cakes and, in addition to working in the kitchen, he also takes on front of house roles. He also attends WI, assists with an S6 food bank and competes for Sheffield’s Top Club Athletics.

Sixer writer Hannah Sanders met up with Percy Pud race director Richard Dunk ahead of this year’s run. Celebrating 25 years, the popular Loxley race, in which all runners receive a Christmas pud for their efforts, takes them along the picturesque Loxley Valley on Photograph: Steel the outskirts of Sheffield. City Striders The Percy Pud run raises more than £100,000 annually for charities, and this time the money raised went to St Luke’s Hospice in Sheffield along with Changing Faces. The race was run in memory of Strider Trevor Burton, who sadly passed away during the summer and a special Percy Pud mug was sold with proceeds going to the British Heart Foundation.

In December the Sixer team decided to invite schools in the local area to draw a festive image for our front cover. We asked pupils from primary schools in the area to design a cover with a festive theme and a splash of colour. It could include a nativity scene, Father Christmas, a local landmark or all three. The rest was up to their imaginations. After much consideration, Maverick Kelley was crowned the winner for his festive depiction of the old Dyson Industries factory in Stannington.
