A significant milestone DISCERNING CUSTOMERS APPRECIATE THE FIRST CLASS WORKMANSHIP THAT GOES INTO CREATING A DAVID J MARTIN KITCHEN. THAT THE BUSINESS HAS RECENTLY CELEBRATED 40 YEARS IS TESTAMENT TO ITS SUCCESS. ne of Sheffield’s most successful and long-standing businesses celebrated its 40th anniversary in December. David J. Martin has been creating stunning bespoke furniture, primarily for kitchens but also for bedrooms, studies and lounges, from the same business base on Springvale Road, Walkley since 1980. Forty years is a significant landmark for any business and a steady stream of satisfied customers have been won over by David’s obsession with doing every job to the highest possible standards. “I’m doing what I always wanted to do since I was at school,” says David, a carpenter by trade who studied for many years, starting with a City and Guilds in joinery and finishing up with a degree in his chosen subject. “I loved joinery and technical drawing and still get a lot of satisfaction from seeing a job through from start to finish.” Kitchens account for most of the work being done by David and his eight-strong team who are all highly trained and at the top of their game. Everything – and that does mean every single thing – is made from scratch with kitchens painstakingly designed to the last millimetre to suit the size and style of the home and meet the requirements of the customer. Every piece of wood is sanded in house, every colour is mixed and sprayed by the company’s own full time professional paint sprayer, and every sharp corner is rounded off by hand. “There’s no such thing as a typical David J Martin kitchen,” says David. “The fact that we make everything means the customer can have whatever they want. Everyone has a different view as to how a kitchen works, so a large part of my job is talking it through with them and finding out exactly what they would like. “We often find ourselves working in some very nice houses where the original kitchen was quite small, it was simply a place to prepare food in. So we are not just planning on where to put the new kitchen, we are also knocking down walls.” When this happens David J Martin can provide a one-stop shop for structural, plumbing and electricity work as well as building furniture. It generally takes three to four months from consultation to completion to finish a kitchen including six weeks to make and three to five weeks to fit, depending on the amount of building work involved. David says: “Because we work as a team – plasterers, electricians, plumbers and fitters – everyone is lined up to come in and work as and when we need them. There is no

delay and disruption for the customer is always kept to a minimum.” It’s at the design stage that David’s technical drawing skills come into their own as he prefers to show customers his own line drawings rather than using a CAD (computer aided design) machine. “Hand-drawn plans alongside photos of what we are starting from show a much truer depiction of what we are going to do and clients who are ordering a bespoke kitchen like it.” Looking to the future, David’s son Richard has worked for the company for 12 years and is now an integral part of the team, and with grandson Oliver the latest addition to the family, who’s to say this family business won’t still be going strong in another 40 years. Looking back with fondness BORN AND RAISED IN SHEFFIED 6, TV AND RADIO PERSONALITY KATE BOTTLEY HAS HAPPY MEMORIES OF ‘HOME’. SHE TALKS TO CHRIS WILSON. he memories of a happy North Sheffield childhood are still vivid for Kate Bottley, known nowadays across the country as the vicar who appeared on Gogglebox and went on to carve out a successful career as one of the nation’s most popular and instantly recognisable TV and radio personalities. “I grew up on Freedom Road, went to Walkley Primary where mum was the school dinner lady, then Walkley Juniors,” she recalls. “I’d go to drama group at Sheffield Youth Theatre in the old primary school at the bottom of Freedom Road. And as a little girl I remember getting the 95 bus back from shopping in Castle Market on a Saturday morning, and getting off a couple of stops early to buy my sweets and comics from the shop on South

Road. Oh, and we loved getting Sixer through the door too.” It all sounds very cosy and conventional but these small domestic details sowed the seeds that led to Kate becoming the household name we know today. It was that initial involvement in youth theatre that transformed a shy, quiet child into a show-off. “I only went along to theatre classes because Mum was the cleaner,” she recalls. “I’d always been the quiet kid at school, believe it or not, but I blossomed into an extrovert teenager. We started doing plays at the Crucible and Lyceum theatres and from the age of 11 or 12 there was no stopping me.” Then the family moved… not far, just down the hill to the bottom of Walkley Bank Road. Kate was at Myers Grove
School and saw a boy she liked who happened to be the vicar’s son at St John’s Church, Owlerton. “So me and my friend started going to church… and the rest is history,” she says with a hearty laugh. It sounds like an unlikely route to religion but there followed the lightbulb moment when Kate realised she had not only found the boy of her dreams (Kate and Graham are married with two grown-up children) but she had actually found God. “My family weren’t church-goers at all so when the moment came when I told my mum and dad that I had started believing in God they thought I’d joined a cult. So I had to reassure them that it was the Church of England and it’d probably be OK.”

INTERVIEW
Kate’s faith stayed strong as she moved from Myers Grove (where she was head girl) to Tapton Sixth Form College, before going to read theology in Leeds, returning to her home city to teach RE. She was involved in her local church in Grenoside when she was asked if she had ever considered being ordained. “So I decided to start and see how far it goes… and nobody has told me to stop yet.” Kate settled in to a quiet life as a parish priest in Nottinghamshire and it might have remained that way, if not for a certain ‘flashmob’ video that went viral on YouTube in 2012. The video showed Kate, who was officiating a wedding, leading the congregation into a mass break-out of disco dancing in the aisle to the sound of Kool & The Gang’s Celebration. “It was a request from the bride and groom and I was only too happy to make it happen,” she recalls. “Everybody wants their wedding to be special. It was an hour-long service, very traditional, but it had a moment in the middle and that three-minute clip on YouTube is what everybody sees.” That was the moment that led to the Gogglebox team approaching Kate, and alongside husband Graham she was one of the most popular characters for three series – although she only wore a dog collar on screen for the first series. “A lot of people thought you could not be a Church of England priest and a normal person – and that’s one of the reasons we did it,” she says. Then when Kate left Gogglebox other media opportunities presented themselves and she decided to go for it. “The number of people going to church is dropping all the time. For me this is an opportunity to keep the conversation going and now I talk to people who might never darken the doors of a church, but they’ll stop me on the street or on a train and have a chat. “A big part of the role of a priest is being available to talk to people, and if they are not coming to church any more perhaps it is time to find other ways.” Kate has certainly kept her media profile high with TV appearances on a wide variety of shows from Songs of Praise to Celebrity Masterchef to 8 out of 10 Cats and Richard Osman’s House of Games. She is also co-presenter of Good Morning Sunday on Radio 2 every weekend. It certainly allows Kate to meet a huge cross section of the general public, not
just those who share her beliefs. Some of these people like to weigh in with challenging questions, but Kate is up for the debate. “There is no question anyone can ask me that has not been asked before about my faith. Sometimes people say, ‘what about evil and suffering?’ Well, it’s a problem with me as well. I bury babies for a living, do you not think I doubt my faith sometimes?” Despite the media whirl postGogglebox, Kate remains a priest. “That does not get taken away, I just don’t have a parish,” she says. “I’m like a supply vicar these days, going to lots of different churches when the regular vicar is ill or on holiday. So I get to meet lots of lovely people while managing to avoid the finance and admin and the tricky stuff that comes with being a parish priest. It’s the best of both worlds.” Meanwhile Kate continues to visit Sheffield regularly to see family, regaling her own children with those tales of life growing up in S6 as she takes a detour
down memory lane. “I loved growing up in Sheffield and South Road in Walkley was always a place where a mobile community of students stopped and the more settled long-term Sheffield folk began, a lovely crossover. When I grew up you had a pork butchers selling dripping next to a vegan café selling hand-made shoes, there was always that wonderful clash of cultures.” As for 2020 she has no idea what the year will bring. “I go from job to job having adventures, which is totally unexpected. I know the attention span of the media is very short so I am going to enjoy this while I can, making the most of every opportunity and knowing the phone might stop ringing tomorrow. That’s the nature of this thing. “The hardest funerals I do are for people where I’ve got nothing to say about what they made of their lives, so I want to give the vicar who does my funeral an easier job. I want to give them plenty to go at.”
“My family weren’t church-goers at all so when the moment came when I told my mum and dad that I had started believing in God they thought I’d joined a cult.”

HEALTH & WELLBEING
Love and happiness TAKE POSITIVE STEPS IN 2020 AND BEAT THE NEW YEAR BLUES. BY RACHEL MARTIN.
ou’ve heard the saying before, and whether it fills you with refreshed energy or makes you roll your eyes, hitting the restart button on a few major aspects of your lifestyle can be a great way to inject some positivity into 2020. It’s incredible how powerful the effect a resolution can have on our psyche. New beginnings and fresh starts, exciting dreams and opportunities, leaving past regrets behind us and embracing the unknown; whatever it is that prompts you to make that promise to yourself, it’s likely because you desire one of the most fundamental and basic human emotions – to be happier. Your thoughts, actions and perceptions are what dictate how happy you feel, which in turn means that we are responsible for our own happiness. Take this responsibility seriously and you can easily start to do things that naturally boost your mood. To help you to get started, here are some simple things you can do to up your mood and beat the New Year blues.
Y
10 www.rmcmedia.co.uk
Healthy diet and exercise One of the most popular ‘resolutions’ is getting healthier. But where most people often fall flat is trying to completely overhaul their eating habits or crash diet and attempting to hit the gym five times a week in the first month. It can be tempting after the festive season to go too hard, too quickly and it’s no wonder this resolution usually falls by the waistline (pardon the pun) early into the year. However, it doesn’t have to. By choosing to follow a realistic healthy eating plan (we recommend asking your GP or nutritionist for their advice before making any large adjustments to your diet) and getting at least 30 minutes of exercise, three times a week to start, you’ll see huge improvements in your mood, energy levels and of course, your overall figure.

HEALTH & WELLBEING
Mindfulness and wellbeing Taking care of your body is a great first start, but it’s easy to overlook mental health. Begin the year with a smiling mind and reap the benefits of a new and improved positive mindset. We recommend making a small list of things you can start with: Do more for yourself. Too often we take care of everyone but ourselves, to the detriment of our own wellbeing. Take time for yourself. Even small, quiet moments reading your favourite book, catching the latest episode of your favourite TV show or taking a stroll before everyone in the house wakes up, can be a wonderful first start to taking care of you. Invest in relationships. We’re constantly engaging with
others, but not the way we used to. Rather than texting or liking a friend’s Facebook photo, call them and organise a time to catch up. There’s nothing quite like facetime – the good old-fashioned kind. Sleep well. Get enough sleep. Turn off your devices an hour
before you hit the hay to secure as much solid, uninterrupted rest as you can (seven to nine hours is ideal). Focus on your strengths. It’s easy to be too hard on ourselves. Self-deprecation may seem an admirable quality from afar, but if you’re constantly putting yourself down, both aloud and in your head, it’s time to readjust your attitude. A confidenceboosting daily or weekly mantra may help you. Why not write a list that resonates with you? Perhaps making your mantra your phone alarm in the morning is the perfect way to start your day with positivity. Remember, an improved mental wellbeing and the regular practise of mindfulness will make it much easier to carry out and stick to your other resolutions.
Give yourself a health boost Start as you mean to go on with a healthy January. We don’t mean giving up all your favourite treats and spending every waking hour on the treadmill but introducing some small lifestyle changes could really make a big difference. Why not go for a walk on a Sunday afternoon, or sneak more of your favourite veg into your dinner? You could even introduce flowers into your home to beat stress or try an immune strengthening supplement to fight colds and flu and boost your natural defensive barrier.
Get moving
Pamper yourself
One of the best ways to boost your mood is with exercise and the good news is that you don’t even need to join the January gym crowds to do this. Try an exercise you enjoy, whether it’s walking, yoga or Pilates and blow away the cobweb’s new year. There’s no need for it to be a chore, either as exercise could be a hobby you start with a friend, such as tennis, or a great activity for spending quality time with the kids, like swimming and cycling.
If the buzz of festive season leaves you feeling frazzled, you have a great excuse to make the new year a time for relaxation. Use up that spa voucher you received for Christmas, treat yourself to some at-home pampering, splurge on new skincare products or book a table at your favourite restaurant. Make time for yourself and indulge in that welldeserved “me-time” – even if it’s simply a long bubble bath or tucking into a box of chocolates. www.rmcmedia.co.uk 11

Life-changing experience THE NEW YEAR HAS STARTED IN THE BEST POSSIBLE WAY FOR ANNE KAY – AND IT’S ALL THANKS TO G&M HEALTHCARE. re you one of the many people who over-indulged at Christmas and is now trying to stick to a strict New Year starvation diet in a frantic effort to Before... lose weight fast and look good for 2020? It’s a common story but for one lifelong yo-yo dieter, who spent decades trying and failing to reach her ideal weight, such extreme measures – which are doomed to fail in the vast majority of cases – are a thing of the past. In fact Christmas 2019 came early for Anne Kay who reached her ideal weight of just under 11 stones in early November. It was a joyful moment for this 60-year-old who has been struggling with her weight throughout her adult life. When you consider that six months previously Anne was topping the scales at around 15 stones 9 pounds that is a mighty achievement – but she couldn’t have done it without a little help from her friends. Anne was convinced that no diet would ever work for her until she met Sarah O’Brien, senior clinical therapist at G&M Healthcare. She’d tried so many diets and slimming clubs in the past, losing weight initially but falling back into bad habits and putting it all on again. But Sarah introduced her to Medisculpt Weight Loss Therapy and the pounds simply fell away from the beginning. More importantly, this time Anne’s weight continued to drop week after week. Anne was placed on a controlled eating plan consisting of around 40 varieties of sachet food alongside a list of unlimited vegetables and fruit. She combined the diet with two treatments: LPG (lipomassage, which reduces cellulite and sagging skin, giving a toned look) and BTL Vanquish ME (a non-surgical option for people with stubborn fat pockets). “The treatments reduce the chances of being left with loose skin following the weight loss, and they have worked brilliantly for me,” says Anne. With such positive results Anne had complete confidence in her diet plan and with the help and encouragement of the

team at G&M, including her therapist Sarah and Dr Grace Hula, she is convinced she won’t go back to old ways. “Now I’ve reached my ideal weight I’m introducing more and more normal food into my diet, I will still be coming in to be weighed regularly and making sure I don’t fall back on the slippery slope.” Anne’s sweet tooth has been her downfall in the past and she’s realistic about the challenges the future holds and the dangers of falling back into old habits. “I’ve spoken to Sarah about the future, and with her support I know I won’t fall back. In fact, I am one billion per cent certain of it. “Nothing tastes as good as how I feel at the moment. I’m jumping for joy.” It’s the little things – like being able to buy a pair of size 14 jeans, something Anne could not even do at school – that mean a lot. A complete new wardrobe is called for, of course, and Anne has been able to treat herself to a big splurge of retail therapy. “I’d urge anyone struggling with their weight to contact G&M Healthcare for an initial consultation and change their life – it worked for me.” G&M Healthcare & Cosmetic Heaven 8 Church Glebe, Middlewood, Sheffield, S6 1XA Tel: 0114 233 5000 / 07432 018753 www.cosmeticclinicsheffield.co.uk www.gandmhealthcare.co.uk Instagram: @gmhealthcare

eating patterns and now I rarely eat out of boredom, and if I am going to snack it’s on things like fruit pots or I’ll cook a quick omelette. “My family and friends have been so supportive of me losing weight, my mum and aunt have both hit their target also, so we all attend group together for free now. “Losing weight has change my life in so many ways, my confidence has grown, I love buying clothes and have a wider range I can chose from not having to go to the back of the rails for a bigger size. Staying to group has really been the key to my success, they’ve been amazing. I know I’d not have been able to do this on my own.” www.rmcmedia.co.uk 17

Waxing Waxing is the process of hair removal from the root by using a covering of a sticky substance, such as wax, to adhere to body hair, and then removing this covering and pulling out the hair from the follicle. Almost any area of the body can be waxed.
Aromatherapy Aromatherapy is an alternative form of therapy that uses essential oils to help improve and balance you emotionally and physically.
Reflexology An alternative medicine involving application of pressure to the feet and hands with specific thumb, finger, and hand techniques without the use of oil or lotion. It is based on a pseudoscientific system of zones and reflex areas that purportedly reflect an image of the body on the feet and hands, with the premise that such work effects a physical change to the body.
Reiki Also known as ‘energy healing’, reiki practitioners use a technique called palm healing or hands-on healing through which a “universal energy“ is said to be transferred through the palms of the practitioner to the patient in order to encourage emotional or physical healing.
Cupping Cupping therapy is a traditional Chinese and Middle Eastern practice that people use to treat a variety of conditions. It involves placing cups at certain points on a person’s skin. A practitioner creates suction in the cups, which pulls against a person’s skin.

Hopi Ear Candling The treatment involves placing an ear candle – a hollow tube made of unbleached cotton that is coated with natural ingredients such as beeswax, honey and herbs – into the ear canal. As the candle gently burns down it is believed to act like a ‘chimney’ creating a light vacuum effect and draws out any build up.

BEAUTY
Get things back on track THESE ARE THE BEAUTY RESOLUTIONS YOU SHOULD BE FOLLOWING THIS NEW YEAR. t’s no secret that December is possibly one of the worst months for our appearance. An onslaught of parties, overindulging and the subsequent recovering take over out free time, and combined with everchanging temperatures and blasts of central heating, it’s safe to say our skin and hair has no chance. Because of this, the hibernation and dreary social of January is the perfect opportunity to get things back on track, and nourish our skin, hair and nails with some simple New Year’s beauty resolutions.
I
Hair After excess styling and a poorer diet than usual, our hair can be particularly damaged after the party season, but there are easy ways to salvage your shine and bring back the bounce. To avoid breakage, brush your hair starting from the ends and work your way up to the root. Other tips of include washing the hair with lukewarm to cool water, as very hot water can have a damaging effect on the hair similar to using heated tools on the hair. When it comes to washing your hair, make sure all products are fully washed out to avoid irritating the scalp and use a good conditioner to keep the hair looking and feeling healthy. After washing, do not brush the hair
immediately, comb through with your fingers first and then reach for the brush. As hair begins its journey in the body, diet is also crucial, and certain foods that affect acne-prone skin can also flare up a problematic scalp. Other foods are very good for your scalp. For instance, Omega 3s found in fatty fish like salmon.
Face During colder months, taking care of our facial skin should be even more of a priority than in summer, and just a few resolutions will help restore your skin’s glow and can reduce puffiness and dryness. Try cleansing as soon as you get home in the evening, especially in January when you are out less and you will soon be in a routine, or maybe after dinner perhaps instead of leaving it for bedtime when you may persuade yourself that you are too tried to take your make up off and clean your skin thoroughly. Cleanse thoroughly with a product that is effective at clearing makeup and doesn’t strip the healthy lipids from the skin. Cut back on physical exfoliation and opt instead for a chemical exfoliator (which gently remove surface dead skin cells) with ingredients like salicylic and azelaic acids. It might not seem necessary, due to the total lack of sunshine, but if you’re going to make any
changes to your skincare routine this year, add an SPF to your routine. UV protection by day. Retinol by night. Two skincare decisions the future you will thank you for. Another beauty resolution to make this New Year is to add a facial oil into your evening routine, as applying before bed will allow your skin to absorb all the benefits whist you sleep.
Body No one feels like slathering on body lotion after a shower on a cold winter morning and we find ourselves with the ‘out of sight out of mind attitude’. Despite being less on show than in summer, the skin is the body’s largest organ, and needs to be taken care of accordingly. It might not seem appealing but applying body lotion as soon as you can after drying off post-cleansing or bathing to help lock in moisture and avoid fragranced moisturisers, which can lead to skin irritation (look out for ones containing vitamin E and aloe vera to soothe and hydrate). Another skin-saving resolution is to nourish your skin from within by drinking enough water. Water will help flush out any toxins from the body and will help your skin, hair and nails to flourish, especially after all that festive merriment. www.rmcmedia.co.uk 21

PROMOTION
Tough and lightweight Look beyond tradition at PA Jewellery and discover something completely different... on-traditional metals (those that aren’t gold, silver, platinum or palladium) are becoming increasingly popular for jewellery, particularly with men. There are several options available, each offering something slightly different, but often offering a more affordable price, chunkier design or more engineered look than you may see in traditional materials. We stock jewellery in titanium, tungsten carbide and stainless steel. Each of these metals has its own features and properties, so here is the first of a series of handy guides…
N
Titanium Titanium is a very tough and lightweight metal ideally suited to a range of jewellery uses. Nearly all our titanium jewellery is made in the UK, including brightly coloured statement earrings and necklaces as well as beautifully engineered men’s rings. Titanium is incredibly strong and durable, having the greatest strength-toweight ratio of all metals and excellent corrosion-resistance. It is hypoallergenic, fantastic for those with allergies or sensitive skin, and very lightweight which allows even large, statement pieces to be worn comfortably. Although titanium has a darkish grey colour, you will see titanium jewellery available in a beautiful rainbow of hues. This is because it has a unique ability to form a microscopically thin oxide layer on its surface though a process called anodic oxidation. This layer splits light that hits the surface into its spectral colours and by 26 www.rmcmedia.co.uk
carefully controlling the process a range of colours can be produced creating an eye-catching effect on earrings and pendants or adding a striking highlight to grooves or patterns on a ring. Titanium’s hardness and strength make it ideal for creating precise, engineered shapes. Sharply defined grooves and bevelled edges work beautifully and polished, brushed, hammered or textured finishes are taken well. It is also particularly suitable for laser engraving with finely detailed text, symbols or images such as fingerprints. As with most alternative metals it is important to keep in mind that future alterations may not be possible. A limited amount of resizing is sometimes achievable on our straightforward titanium bands although this does need to be done with the manufacturer. More detailed designs may not be able to be resized at all. If your ring becomes too tight and you cannot remove it then specialist equipment is required to cut through the metal and although we are able to help you with this should the need arise we would strongly advise removing your ring before it reaches that stage! We have a wide range of titanium rings and other jewellery available to view in our showroom with a selection also featured on our website. Visit our showroom to try on titanium jewellery and talk to our jewellers about your requirements. PA Jewellery The Old Bank, Commonside, Sheffield, S10 1GD Tel: 0114 266 9253 www.pajewellery.com

To infinity, and beyond THE 2010S HAVE COME TO AN END, SO STASH THE SUCCULENTS AND SHABBY CHIC DÉCOR – IT’S TIME TO USHER IN A NEW DECADE OF DESIGN. h, the joys of the new year. As we honour Earth’s revolution around the sun, we create new resolutions, set new goals, and of course, seek out new trends and while our personal lives may need a bit of refreshing, our homes deserve the same kind of attention, too. Infusing your spaces with what’s up-to-the-minute can be tricky, but we’ve got you covered some of our favourite home trends predicted will be in and out in 2020, from colour palettes to furniture, design and beyond.
O
GEOMETRIC PATTERNS
BIOPHILIA DESIGN
Geometric patterns have been on an upward trend for years now, so much so that you can find geometric patterned anything, anywhere. But the only problem with geometric patterns being so popular, is that it’s on everything: cups, notebooks, wallpaper, couches, bedding, art, floors, light fixtures, and other decor. It’s so easy to overdo it, but don’t expect geometric designs to be going away anytime soon. That’s why 2020 is all about geometric balance. You can still make a statement with vibrant patterns but stick with chairs, throws, floor tiles, or a thin-lined geometric wallpaper with a not so busy aesthetic and pick an area of your home where you want to make a bold statement. It’s all about being strategic.
Biophilia is a new trend that incorporates human design and natural elements in a way that doesn’t seem manufactured. In the past few years, society has grappled with climate change and sustainability and a lot of consumers want to have a stylish home, yet it still incorporates organic elements from the environment. Interior design firms have heeded that call. Recycled wood can be used for chairs, tables and floors, while plants can contribute to organic aesthetic and promote a clean, environmentally friendly home. High tech homes were in, but 2020 is all about getting back and giving back to nature. Bedrooms and bathrooms are transformed into ethereal spaces created by using rich earthy elements including metals, wood and stone.

NEUTRAL TONES Neutral colours will be in once again this year. What can we say? Neutrals come in pretty classic and serene shades, and most importantly, they’re not super busy. 2020 sees warm neutrals making their way in, while cool neutrals fade into the background. Don’t underestimate the power of neutral décor, either. It’ll make an excellent choice for your walls, but there are also great options for furniture, including sofas, armchairs, throws and bedding.
VELVET Velvet may not be everyone’s cup of tea, but it’s going to be steaming hot and trendy in 2020 and is the perfect blend of luxury and comfort. When most people think of velvet, they’re often thinking about the garish red velvet upholstery of yesteryear. But this year, interior design firms are taking a deep dive into velvet design options, particularly for sofas and colour options are wider than ever. We’re talking vibrant blues, pinks, burnt orange and shades of taupe. The possibilities for velvet furniture are endless.

MAXIMALISM DESIGNING
BLACK EVERYTHING
Minimalism is out and maximalism is in. While minimalism focuses on toning things down and making it simple and straightforward, maximalism is the complete opposite. It’s about embracing the grandeur. Needless to say, interior designers are going to have a field day with this trend. Big, bold, bright colours and patterns, gaudy decor and colourful abstract paintings. It’s caring without actually caring. Of course, you’ll have to use some restraint. It’s easy to quickly leave bold and lively and tread into busy and cluttered. Regardless, we’ve gone from less is more to more is more.
Black is back and bigger than ever. Interior design firms predict that “black everything”, from cabinets to sinks, paint and countertops will be one of the top trends in 2020. Black walls, finishes, and furniture can make your home look high end and on-trend, but one of the reasons black has been so off putting to consumers in the past, is because there’s an assumption that black makes a room look smaller and it can feel a little claustrophobic. You can combat that problem by including contrasting colours. Splashes of white or other soft tones will ease this concern as we look forward to a bold and matte black year ahead.

Steps to a brighter future
Centre Director David Kaye (middle) with senior tutors Helen Hogg and Peter Renardson
THERE IS NO ‘ONE SIZE FITS ALL’ APPROACH TO YOUR CHILD’S EDUCATION, WHICH IS WHY KIP MCGRATH CAN MAKE A BIG DIFFERENCE. here are a whole host of reasons parents might be looking for tuition, but one thing’s for sure, tuition is no longer just for those who are struggling. Whether you’re looking for academic support, a confidence boost, exam preparation or an environment in which your child can blossom, Kip McGrath can do just that. With over 650 centres worldwide and 270 across the UK, Kip McGrath understand that every child’s education is unique, and every ability different. There is no ‘one size fits all’ approach. Each student, whether five years old or 18 years old is taught according to their needs. If something needs to be explained again, perhaps in a different way, that is what they will do. That is why they only employ qualified, experienced teachers who have the professional expertise to adapt to each individual’s educational needs. “We believe that building a trusting relationship with our students and their families allows us to foster a genuine passion for the subjects we teach and a love of learning,” says former headteacher, David Kaye, who has over 30 years’ experience in the education sector and opened Kip McGrath Sheffield North six years ago in January 2014. “We know that choosing the right tuition can be a big decision and it is our mission to connect your child with passionate, expert tutors, to help them
T
achieve their highest potential. They are, after all, the most important person in the process, and we tailor our approach based on the needs and ambitions of each student. “We like to sit down with your child to properly assess their strengths, weaknesses and learning preferences, as well as to read school reports and talk with the people who know your child best: you. Once we have a good impression of their needs, we can match them with a tutor and produce a schedule that will help guide them towards their goals. “We constantly liaise with our tutors to monitor the progress being made, and, if needs be, modify the schedule. You, whether a parent or guardian, will also receive detailed reports and feedback after each session, where appropriate, to ensure you are always kept up to date with your child’s progress.” The Kip McGrath team has a wealth of educational experience, as well as an impressive history of helping students of all ages achieve their goals and offer unparalleled insight into and each and every stage of your child’s development. Their approach to education ensures that children learn both core and applied skills and courses are aligned to the school curriculum, so you can be safe in the knowledge that your child’s tuition is the best possible complement to their education.
“All of our tutors are experts in the school curriculum, teaching methods and how to get the best out of every child and we are always on hand to discuss academic development and ways that you can support them at home. We are constantly blown away by the number of stories from our students about the difference their tutor has made to them. They are the heart of our company and what makes us unique.” Kip McGrath specialises in English, Maths and Science tuition for primary and secondary year students of any ability. All the tutors have significant experience of teaching students who have special educational needs and David is an experienced Special Needs Coordinator. Kip McGrath also offer tuition in some A-Level subjects. “We teach children from KS1 to ALevels, so whether they’re making their first forays into primary learning or they’re gearing up to tackle their GCSEs, we can help them on their way. Book a free assessment today, with no commitment and find out how we can help your child build a brighter future.” Kip McGrath Office 12, Haywood House, Hydra Business Park, Ecclesfield, Sheffield, S35 9ZX Tel: 0114 257 0777 www.kipmcgrath.co.uk/sheffieldnorth www.rmcmedia.co.uk 47

Friends of Loxley Cemetery is a newly formed constituted group that is aiming to tidy up the overgrown Loxley Cemetery. The cemetery is privately owned and the Friends are working with the owner to make the site into a place where people can come and find peace and solace as they remember their lost loved ones. So far they have over 60 people who have expressed an interest in helping them in their endeavour. They welcome any newcomers that would like to assist. They hope to begin clearing the grounds in the late spring or early summer. Anyone who is interested to join can contact them by email at loxley.secretary@yahoo.com giving a contact number and any information about what they can offer in the way of help. Such things as tools, donations and time are very welcome.
Lori gets a hug
Touching hearts, changing lives Heather Plowright is starting 2020 with a new career with Slimming World. Having been a successful Slimming World member and lost 2st she knows only too well the misery and guilt that’s associated with being overweight. Heather also suffers from Fibromyalgia and has found food optimising has been the best way for her to lose weight. She’s so passionate about it she now wants to help other local people to lose weight. “Slimming World’s extra easy plan is really great, it means I’m never hungry and it fits in with my family,” she says. “I never have to cook separate meals and we love a Sunday roast. I really can’t wait to start training in the new year and launch my group in Fox Hill on 23 January.” The meetings are every Thursday at 5.30pm and 7.30pm. One recent success story in the Hillsborough Slimming World group was member Lesley who received a congratulatory hug from consultant Lori after reaching her target weight. The moment summed up the support, humour and hugs that bring a group of like-minded people together to achieve their goals.

Sacred centenary Sacred Heart Catholic Church on Forbes Road, Hillsborough is celebrating its centenary this year. As a Grade II listed building, its fine tower is a prominent landmark in the area. Sacred Heart is a vibrant parish with a diverse and inclusive congregation providing a warm welcome to all who enter its doors. Prior to the 1850s, the Catholic community of Hillsborough and Walkley was affiliated to the parish St Vincent’s Parish in Solly Street but they worshipped in the chapel of the army barracks – which was just opposite the current site – becoming an independent parish in August 1920. To mark the 100-year anniversary there will be events throughout the year showing how the parish has evolved over the years, culminating in a grand finale of worship and celebration in September.
Healing Rooms Healing Rooms Hillsborough will be open every Tuesday in January at Hillsborough Arena, S6 4HA between 10.30am and 12noon. Director Ray Hutty says all are welcome – of any faith or none!
Luxury and comfort Barkers Furniture of Burton Street, Sheffield say velvet is the one huge trend for 2020. It masters a perfect combination of luxury and comfort; place this together with wood in its natural state and you have the enviable combination for your lounge and living areas. For maybe the first time ever, on trend is no longer considered ‘trendy’, customers are now personalising individual furniture choices teaming antiques with new designs, mixing different metal tones and woods then using geometrics patterns along with luxury fabrics. Corner sofas will continue to impress, with curves taking centre stage. Choose a neutral colour for your sofa then dress out with pastel pinks and forest green cushions and rugs. Standalone leather swivel recliner chairs are the ultimate in design and comfort, place them alongside a contrasting sofa and you’re bound to be the talk of the town. Finally, furniture designers are predicting a massive shift away from ‘click to buy’ sales and seeing a reinvigorated enthusiasm for quality crafted ‘made to order’ furniture. This is something the Barkers team finds very welcoming. Looking back 2019 WAS AN AMAZING YEAR. WE MET SOME INTERESTING PEOPLE AND HEARD SOME INCREDIBLE STORIES. SO LET’S PAUSE FOR A MOMENT AND LOOK BACK AT SOME OF THE HIGHLIGHTS THAT MADE THE LAST 12 MONTHS SO SPECIAL.
January We began the year by interviewing Paul Carrack, the Crookes-born musician who went on to travel the world playing with everyone from Squeeze, The Smiths, The Pretenders, BB King, Eric Clapton and Mike and the Mechanics to writing songs for The Eagles and playing and touring with his own highly rated band. Paul is based in the south now and constantly on tour, but always returns to his North Sheffield roots to catch up with his family and watch his beloved Sheffield Wednesday for whom he still has a season ticket.

February Love was in the air as we turned our thoughts to weddings, romance and Valentine’s Day. And our friends at PA Jewellery at Commonside had some useful tips on how to make a wedding or engagement ring extra special by using gold with sentimental value from family heirlooms. Jeweller and gemmologist par excellence Zoe Lewis told us: “We are regularly asked if we can make wedding bands out of customers’ gold and the answer is yes! Supplying metal for your rings can allow you to transfer the sentimental value of family heirlooms; many customers will use pieces of jewellery, perhaps even wedding rings, left to them by family members, giving the new rings a rich, unique and personal history.”
March Many people mourned the passing of Walter Holland, who died aged 93 after being a big part of the childhoods of generations of youngsters growing up in and around Hillsborough, Wisewood and Wadsley. Walter was a real character whose child-like delight in life’s simple pleasures, from stringing up conkers to making paper aeroplanes, made him a familiar figure and a natural friend to the young-at-heart. Walter’s niece Joan Allen told us that a heavy bump on the head at a young age led to complications involving meningitis leading to severe learning difficulties, but this did not stop him having a long life and being well-loved in his local community.
April Artist Pete McKee and Arctic Monkeys cover star Chris McClure may seem like an unlikely double act but they came together to create The Owl Sanctuary, a podcast that Pete described as “a celebration of what it is to be a Wednesdayite.” Sixer’s Ashley Birch met up with the duo to discuss the passion that has drawn them together. The podcast quickly attracted big name guests including former Owls stars John Sheridan, Chris Waddle and Carlton Palmer. Pete explained the plan to create a more positive take on the club, at a time when the atmosphere around the club’s social media was ‘toxic’.
May With early summer came a rush for the great outdoors and we met up with local wildlife enthusiast Dean Rae who told us about his dedication to catching and ringing birds in the hills around Bradfield Dale. Migrants to the area that Dean and his fellow volunteers have been monitoring included willow warblers, chiff chaffs, white throats and pied ply catchers, and Dean reckons the North Sheffield area is a prime spot for birds to flourish. “We have a lot of continuous good quality habitat because we are on the edge of a national park and the farming is more pasture than crops, which is also good news for wildlife.”
June Red telephone boxes may be disappearing from our landscape but we discovered one in particular on Cockshutts Lane in Oughtibridge that has been adopted by the local Rangers (the over-14s of the guiding movement) and turned into a library. Local resident and Ranger leader Judith Stewart discovered BT’s “adopt a kiosk” scheme and took over the decommissioned kiosk for the grand sum of £1. “Red phone boxes are part of our heritage and I couldn’t bear to see it go to rack and ruin,” she said. www.rmcmedia.co.uk 59

July It’s one of the classic sights of summer and all seems benign and friendly but we discovered that crown green bowls can be very competitive. We met Jean and Don Perry from Stannington Bowls Club, who took up the game when both were retired and looking for a hobby they could share. Twenty years on and they are still going strong. There are 42 greens in Sheffield alone and every one is different - and that’s where the skill comes in when you start to play competitively.

August As Sixer celebrated its 25th anniversary with a travel back through the archives we also looked back to the previous month and a successful, sell-out Tramlines festival in Hillsborough Park with hugely successful shows headlined by Two Door Cinema Club, Courteeners and Nile Rodgers and Chic. The sun shone (most of the time), there was a real family atmosphere and Tramlines’ Timm Cleasby told us that within a few days of the festival finishing, half of the tickets had already been sold for the 2020 event.

September The S6 postcode and the surrounding areas are changing rapidly, and we took an in-depth look at some of the biggest changes we can look forward to in the future. Proposals that could transform the region include a modern combination of ski slope, mountain biking trails, shops, bars and a tourist hotel called EXTREME at the old muchvandalised Sheffield Ski Village, a £25million scheme for Penistone Road Retail Park opposite Hillsborough Stadium, plans for a revamped Hillsborough Exchange Shopping Centre and a Heritage Lottery Fund-aided dementia-friendly older people’s centre and café in Hillsbrough Park.
October Saturdays used to be all about a nice lie in but now, for thousands of keen athletes and fun runners, it’s all about the Parkrun. This national phenomenon has really taken off and particularly so in Hillsborough Park where the event celebrated its 15th anniversary. Nearly 10,000 people have taken part on the Hillsborough event, over 1,300 new devotees in the last year alone. It’s 9am every Saturday morning, rain or shine, all year round. To give it a go you have to register in advance. Go to the website www.parkrun.org
November To commemorate 150 years, St Mary’s Church in Walkley unveiled a new stained glass window which was officially dedicated by the Bishop of Sheffield. The vicar of St Mary’s the reverend Melanie FitzGerald, told us: “The new west window adds something of beauty from the 21st century to remind all who see it that the Christian faith is not just about the past, but is for the future too. It will be called the Resurrection window and follows the age-old tradition of telling key biblical stories.”
December It was all glitz and glamour when The OEC staged a spectacular launch party for more than 300 guests. This exciting ultra-modern venue with a 500seater capacity looks like the perfect spot for largescale parties, weddings and celebrations of all kinds. The OEC – Owlerton Events & Conferencing to give its full title – nestles snugly between Napoleons Casino and Owlerton Stadium on Penistone Road.

In safe caring hands PEACE FUNERALS – FIVE YEARS AND GOING STRONG. t has been five years since Peace Funerals opened the doors to their North Sheffield Funeral Home, on Halifax Road, and they are now a big part of the community. “The residents of the surrounding areas have welcomed us with open arms, and it has been a great privilege to have been a part of the community for the past five years, helping people when they are at their most vulnerable. We would like to thank the local neighborhood for welcoming and trusting us,” says Gavin Moorby, one of the managers at Peace. “It’s been 20 years since we opened our Gleadless Branch and back in those days there was just John, Gavin and me. We now have two wonderful teams at each of our branches, and we are so proud of them all,” says Stephen Parkin, co-manager. The team at Peace Funerals North Sheffield Funeral Home, has grown over the past few years. John Mallatratt, one of the owners of Peace Funerals, works closely with Stephen and Gavin, who are supported by fellow funeral directors Claire Havenhand, Charlie Marshall and James Fair, with Lisa Ash and Roberta Bramley always at the end of the phone and or there to greet you when you visit the funeral home. Peace Funerals still manage to offer

a quality service at a very reasonable price, and the positive reviews they constantly receive are a testament to the team ethos that Peace Funerals has. “I have been part of the team at Peace Funerals since they opened their Halifax Road Branch, and l find working here very rewarding. We always strive to make sure everything goes smoothly on the day of the funeral, and the relatives we have worked with over the years have really appreciated everything we do for them,” says Claire. “It is very important to us that a family deal with the same funeral director from the first meeting, all the way through to the day of the funeral. This means the family will have a familiar face on the day of the funeral, giving them more comfort,” adds James. And Charlie said: “We always work together as a team at Peace Funerals, supporting each other, so that we can help families when they are at a very difficult time in their life. The lovely feedback we have had from our customers over the years really does make this job worthwhile and enjoyable.”

Old Logo
New Logo
A New Look Over the next few months, Peace Funerals will be introducing a new look to their brand. Their current logo has been largely unchanged for the past 23 years and it was felt that it was time for a change. As John Mallatratt explained: “We want our logo to reflect the sort of people we are and so we looked at some recent reviews from our customers. Some phrases stuck out ‘Professional without being stuffy’, ‘Go the extra mile’, ‘Understanding’, ‘Nothing too much trouble’. Of course a logo can’t say all those things, but we hope that the new logo will give people a better sense of how approachable we are and our modern approach to funeral directing.” So keep an eye out, and let them know what you think.

HEROES
A year of heroes WE’VE BEEN RUNNING OUR SIXER HEROES SERIES FOR A FEW YEARS NOW BUT THERE DOES NOT SEEM TO BE ANY SHORTAGE OF BIG-HEARTED SHEFFIELD FOLK DOING AMAZING THINGS FOR THE BENEFIT OF OTHERS. HERE’S A SELECTION OF SOME OF THE MOST HEART-WARMING STORIES WE’VE FEATURED OVER THE LAST YEAR.
Rapid response Nicola Roberts is an advanced first aider who contacted her local branch of St John Ambulance (SJA) when she was witness to a serious assault and wished she could do more to step in and help the victim. This Sheffield dental nurse was certainly able to make a difference when she was part of the SJA team attending a football match between Barnsley and Burton at the Yorkshire club’s Oakwell ground. One of the match day volunteers suffered a heart attack at the pitch side and while medical staff from both clubs attended the scene Nicola headed straight for the family of the stricken man, sitting with them and offering reassurance when they suffered the trauma of seeing CPR being carried out on a loved one. The story had a happy ending as the man concerned, Steve Croft, managed a complete recovery and a few months later Nicola was one of the recovery team led onto the pitch by Mr Croft to warm applause from all sides of the stadium. Nicolas insists she was only doing what she was trained to do, and as well as attending public events she now also trains Sheffield’s SJA cadets (aged 10-17) and badgers (7-10). “It’s very rewarding and great to see new cadets and badgers coming through,” she told us.
Royal appointment Former professional snooker player Steve Harrison, who went on to found a club for people with learning disabilities in Sheffield, was awarded an MBE in this year’s honours list for his services to sport. Steve had set up this club in 2007, partly in memory of his father Ray, who himself was a paraplegic world champion in 1985. Since being established, the club has helped thousands of people with both learning and physical disabilities. In recognition of the inspirational work he has done, the local lad from S6 was given this prestigious honour and met Prince William. “It was amazing!” beams Steve. “I got the letter on 21 November and when I read it I got very emotional. I’ve got a picture of my father in my front room and all my passion and striving to do this is to grow my dad’s legacy. The fire in me comes from my father.” After hanging up his professional cue in 2005, Steve now teaches children not only how to play snooker, but also how to socially interact, improving their social skills and giving the kids confidence. There are currently around 60 members, and Steve says that he wants to “make it even bigger”. 64 www.rmcmedia.co.uk

HEROES
Eve rises to challenge Every two minutes, someone in the UK is diagnosed with cancer, and the chances are that all of us knows someone who’s experienced the disease in some way. Fifteen-year-old Eve Heathcote from Stannington knows all too well the impact cancer can have on a family, as her aunt was diagnosed with it five years ago. Although it’s not been an easy journey, Eve’s aunt is now thankfully in much better health, and Eve is raising money to support the charity that helped her family during such a tough time. Eve challenged herself to complete 19 runs throughout 2019, and is donating the money to Sheffield’s Western Park Cancer Charity, which raises around £2million each year to help the lives of those living with cancer. Eve recalls why she decided to start supporting the charity: “I wanted to make sure that nobody felt alone, and even if I can only help one person, it’ll all be worth it.”
Home from home The Sick Children’s Trust believes that keeping families together significantly improves the recovery of seriously ill children. They provide free, high quality accommodation, as well as emotional and practical support to families with sick children in hospitals across the UK. Marcus and Laura Leverton felt indebted to the Trust when their son Harry developed a series of viral infections at 17 months old, which led to him being placed in a medically induced coma. Marcus recalls: “We can’t thank them enough for their support, the accommodation they provide is simply amazing and without it, we’d have been faced with a long and distressing journey home and expensive hotel bills. I do not know how we would have coped with the emotional and physical stress of caring for our critically ill child and travelling.” Happily Harry made a full recovery and is now a healthy and happy 11-year-old and as a thank-you to The Sick Children’s Trust for the care and support offered when they need it most, the Leverton family have raised £210,000 over the last ten years.
Fred’s bright idea While political parties battle over the funding of the NHS, the scenes of overcrowded hospitals struggling to cope that have become a regular part of modern life are nothing compared to the struggle to provide healthcare for a growing population in the pre NHS era. Rewind to the early 1900s and Sheffield’s four main hospitals – The Royal, The Royal Infirmary, The Children’s, and Jessop Hospital – were struggling from bed shortages and lack of equipment and funds for much-needed modernisation. That’s when Fred Osborn, a member of Sheffield Consultative and Advisory Hospitals Council, had the idea for a ‘penny in the pound’ scheme. Launched in 1921, for every pound of an employee’s pay, a penny would be given to the hospitals and in return contributors received free hospital treatment. This was the beginnings of Westfield Health, which went on to become one of the largest and most successful schemes of its kind in the country. Today Westfield Health is an awardwinning health and wellbeing provider, dedicated to making a healthy difference to the quality of life of its customers and the community in which they live and work. It works with more than 450,000 customers and 8,000 companies.
Gay goes the distance 2019 was a year of endless endeavour for Gay Fletcher as she threw herself into a 12-months-long fund-raising drive on behalf of Prostate Cancer UK and Marie Curie Cancer in memory of her brother Scott Vessey, who died of prostate cancer aged 50 in January 2014. A programme of cycle rides and fun runs helped raise funds for a worthy cause and also raised awareness in Scott’s memory of a disease where men can increase their chances of survival by checking themselves for the first signs. Scott was a keen footballer who also gave a huge amount back to his local community with his coaching and managing for Wisewood Juniors FC. Gay said: “We have been without Scott in our lives for five years and I did not want to remember this milestone with sadness and regret, but with love, hope and memories in my heart, celebrating the wonderful time I had with him, remembering his humour, feisty personality and strength.”
