SIXERDO YOU REMEMBER?
ere’s a familiar street from the heart of the Sixer area that has undergone a few changes since this particular snap was taken. We doubt you will recognise the faces, but can you identify the location? Last month’s photo was the Hillfoot School football team from 1956. Captain Jack Cunningham (centre, holding ball) later earned a living as part of a three-man trapeze act called The Flying Delgadoes and fifth from left in the back row is Fred Pass, who wrote the popular books of local life Weerz Me Dad and Weerz Me Mam. Thanks to Barry Couldwell for providing the photo, and our apologies for mistakenly saying Barry featured in the team line-up.

PROMOTIONTONEHOUSE
Tonehouse is filling the need for a women-only gym to help ladies achieve their fitness goals. new ladies-only gym in a familiar location is fulfilling the fitness needs of females of all ages in North Sheffield. Until it closed a few weeks ago Kayleigh Mitchell was working in the LadyZone gym on Middlewood Road in Hillsborough. But out of adversity has sprung a new business on the same premises – Tonehouse – with Kayleigh at the helm, offering a comforting link with the past and a new commitment to helping ladies in the region get the exercise they need in a positive, friendly and relaxed environment. Having worked in the fitness industry for over 13 years, ten of those in management positions, Kayleigh has gained a great knowledge of what customers want and need to achieve
A
their results. She says: “My journey now is starting up my own business, to help ladies of all ages, sizes and abilities achieve their health and fitness goals. Having worked in an all-ladies gym for the last eight years I have a great knowledge of what ladies want, especially if they have never enjoyed gyms previously. “When Ladyzone closed I was devastated for all of the members who were suddenly deprived of a gym that offered this type of environment and encouragement. It is all down to the phone calls and emails I received from these people, showing great concern
about where they could go next, that made me want to take the plunge and invest my own money in a new business. It has been a very hard journey over the last few weeks but I am pleased to say I am getting there. “I would like to welcome all previous Ladyzone members and new members with a £40 voucher off membership in July, so please take advantage of this great offer. “ Tonehouse 333-335 Middlewood Road Hillsborough, Sheffield Tel: 07812 078823 www.tonehouseltd.co.uk

BRADFIELD PARISH COUNCIL NEWSLETTER IN ASSOCIATION WITH SIXER
REPORT BY THE CHAIRMAN s the new Chairman, I am very much looking forward to the year ahead. Having been on the Council since 1999, I have seen so much good work ongoing in the surrounding communities. This is as a result of both Councillors and members of community groups and we will continue to support these groups and all they do. The Citizens Awards, which was held at War Memorial Sports Club, gave the Parish a chance to recognise those who have made an
A
outstanding contribution and was a hugely successful evening with great attendance. I would like to thank our apprentice groundsman, Kieran Hinds, for all his hard work, as his two year apprenticeship comes to an end and wish him well in all his future endeavours. Finally, I would like to welcome both new and returning Councillors and I am sure we will have a very successful four years. Vickie Priestley

MEET THE NEW COUNCILLORS Hannah Chaplin I feel very fortunate to live, work and raise my young family in Oughtibridge. Since moving here three-and-a-half years ago I’ve enjoyed getting to know some fantastic neighbours, ties which have been strengthened by my son starting at Oughtibridge Primary School last September. My career is in software, which is something I am very passionate about. I recently became a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) ambassador, with the intention of supporting technology in schools from September. I play guitar and trombone in the Stannington-based Langsett Dance Orchestra and also enjoy karate and running round our beautiful countryside. I’m very proud to represent Oughtibridge and look forward to working with you all.
Kevin Rontree I was born in Southwell, Nottingham, but moved to Sheffield in 2012 after marrying my wife Pam and we now live in Wadsley Park Village. I have four grown-up daughters, and ten grand children and they live in Lincoln, Newark, Mansfield and Munich. I had a successful career in printing, before becoming an estate agent. I am now retired and my hobbies include photography – I’ve had work published and have been lucky enough to photograph many weddings over the years. I have a number of years’ experience of being both a parish and district councillor, in the Nottinghamshire area, which I would like to utilise at Bradfield Parish Council to the benefit of everyone in the area.
Stephen Bennett I have lived in the Bradfield area for the past 40 years, and believe in preserving and improving this outstanding parish for future generations through maintenance of community activity, action and sympathetic development to maintain the village communities. My passion has always been horses, and off-road access through bridleways, green lanes and byways have always been high on my list of priorities for horse riders, cyclists and walkers to enjoy. To enhance and maintain these amenities I have worked closely with British Horse Society, Endurance GB, bridleway associations and local council access. We are all very lucky living in an area where we can enjoy the green fields, moors and woods of this beautiful Parish, but it is blighted by litter and this is one of my concerns. I regularly collect litter from the lanes and verges around my house. I am hoping the community can be inspired to help create and maintain a litterfree Parish for us all to enjoy.

Trevor Bagshaw My family have lived in Bradfield Parish, in Oughtibridge, for almost 50 years, but I am certainly no stranger to Stannington. I married a Stannington girl, Margaret Ann Bird, in 1963 at the Parish Church and began a long association with the village. We have two daughters and four grandchildren. In 1987 I was elected to Bradfield Parish Council and served until 1991, when I became the city Councillor for South Wortley ward, which included much of Bradfield Parish. I have served as a governor of both Bradfield School and the Sheffield College and was a member of the Peak District National Park Authority for a number of years. I was also honoured to be elected as Lord Mayor of Sheffield 1999-2000. Besides my roles within the community, both myself and Margaret enjoy rambling, photography, gardening and travelling. I am delighted to be re-joining Bradfield Parish Council; it is a journey back to my roots in local government. I hope to make a contribution to the work of the Council on behalf of my constituents.
Miriam Cates I grew up in Sheffield and have lived in Oughtibridge for the last five years. I have loved getting involved with village life and with three small children, I have benefited enormously from the strong local community. As a new Councillor I am keen to serve the Parish in any way I can, especially by promoting opportunities for our children and young people. As the joint chair of supporters of Oughtibridge School I have seen how well the Council assists local groups and I would like to help other community groups benefit from the same support.
James Greaves I grew up on a small family farm in Worrall and went to Oughtibridge Primary School, Bradfield Comprehensive School and Loxley College before going on to study at Nottingham Trent University. My career path has been very varied. I firstly worked on the farm from an early age and then developed Haggstones Farm Nursery into a small successful business. I moved away from Worrall and utilised my finance degree to gain a job with Marks and Spencer and worked all over the country. I now run a construction company, which specialises in the renovation of heritage buildings. I’ve always felt passionately about the area where I grew up, and I’m looking forward to being able to play a proactive roll in the Parish Council.

THE CITIZENS AWARDS
Wharncliffe Side Old People’s Association
embers of the community joined Bradfield Parish Council at Oughtibridge War Memorial Sports Club to celebrate those who have made a significant contribution to the parish and surrounding communities. Matt Dixon – who was Chairman at the time of the awards – presented his final speech and thanked all members for their help. He highlighted significant events he had attended over the last year, such as the Tour de France and the commemoration of World War One at Sheffield Cathedral and said: “I have been so proud and privileged to represent the Parish at these events.” The awards were presented by Matt, along with special guest Angela Smith, who is the MP for Penistone and Stocksbridge. The two Good Citizen Awards were awarded to Andrew Kirk of Stannington Scout Group and Lynn Russell, for her outstanding work in the Bradfield community. Matt said: “Lynn is involved in everything in Bradfield, from Bradfield in Bloom, which makes the area look beautiful, to setting up the farmers market.”

MP Angela Smith, Matt Dixon and Lynn Russell
Andrew was unable to attend, but Neil McKay, district commissioner for Sheffield Hallam district collected the award on his behalf and said: “Andy is very modest about his contribution, but he has really built up the scout group and created a real family feel.” Other awards included Special Recognition Awards, one of which, went to Friends of Coronation Park. Chairwoman Jenny Morton collected the award and said the group was formed to give a voice to the park users. “Our aim is to improve the green space and to get grants to help the park put on activities. There is currently zorbing and climbing frames that children can come to the park and use. We’re delighted about the award; it was completely out the blue – we have no idea who nominated us.” Another Special Recognition Award went to Matt Dixon and Neil McKay Wharncliffe Side Old People’s Association. The group has been going 68 years and each year they raise money to throw a party for older people to enjoy food and entertainment around Christmas time. Chair Gill Adams said: “It’s heart warming to help others, and we are honoured to have received this award.” The Citizens Awards were a huge success with many in attendance and guests enjoyed drinks and nibbles afterwards. Congratulations to all of the worthy winners and may their great work continue.

PROMOTIONTHE SCHOOLROOMS
Back to its best… a new manager at The Schoolrooms has revived this well-loved Bradfield café. picture-perfect scene awaits at Low Bradfield, where the stone-built houses, active community spirit and variety of local businesses keep the village ticking along beautifully. Villagers, visitors and the area’s keen walkers will be thrilled to hear that one of these businesses – The Schoolrooms – is now under new management and thriving once more. New manager Kirsty Clark has a wealth of experience in the catering industry, having spent three years as manager of Silversmiths in Sheffield city centre before developing her career further in London. She is now back in Yorkshire and delighted to have taken the reins at The Schoolrooms, where she is busy revitalising the well-loved café and tearooms. “We’ve taken it back to its best with a strong emphasis on local, traditional, good quality food that is made to order,” explains Kirsty. The menu offers a good mix of breakfast options, sandwiches, light bites and a few bigger dishes such as the burger (served with fat chips, baby gem lettuce, tomato, red onion, gherkin and a spicy tomato and caramelised onion relish) and the slow-cooked brisket (served with new potatoes, seasonal vegetables and homemade gravy). What’s more, each Friday, Bradfield Brewery-battered haddock (with fat chips, tartar sauce and mushy peas) is just £5. All meat and vegetables, as well as deli boards, quiches, pork pies, chutneys and pickles, are from The Schoolrooms shop and onsite butchery, where you can also buy cheese, olives, antipasti and a huge variety of fresh, locally sourced meat. The café counter groans with hard-
A
to-resist cakes, scones and traybakes, which are a perfect match for The Schoolrooms’ own coffee, roasted in North Yorkshire. If you love the taste, make sure you pick up a bag from the shop when you leave. Locally roasted coffee isn’t the only item worth stopping for. The shop is now being restocked with new and exciting products that reflect The Schoolrooms’ traditional, rustic feel. “I’m trying to source a bit of everything so, whether you’re nipping in for a special something or doing your weekly shop, there’ll be plenty of choice,” says Kirsty. As you’d expect, many products are sourced from local independent suppliers, including a variety of fresh bread, eggs, milk, beer, fruit, vegetables and ice cream. You’ll also find a good selection of premium soft drinks, gluten-free products, speciality foods, sauces, dressings, seasonings and their own line of chutneys, jams and pickles. “The Schoolrooms has so much potential and I plan to take advantage of every opportunity,” says Kirsty. “We welcome everyone from walkers with muddy boots and young families to locals and visitors looking for a true taste of the countryside. I’m also planning a series of seasonal events and bistro evenings to cater for all.” Kirsty already has her first event lined up – a Blooming Great Tea Party on 29 July to raise money for Marie Curie. In addition to a mouth-watering selection of cakes – served outside if the weather is fine – there will be a raffle to help raise as much as possible for this worthy cause. There are also plans for a toddler group on a Wednesday morning. As a former Rainbow leader for seven years, Kirsty looks forward to offering craft activities for the children while parents enjoy a well-deserved coffee and cake break. The brand new enclosed playground is also sure to keep the kids active and occupied throughout the summer. So, next time you’re out and about in Bradfield, don’t miss your opportunity to discover all that The Schoolrooms has to offer. You’re sure of great service at Bogarts where the team pride themselves on putting the customer first. here was a time when most men saw a trip to the barber as only slightly less painful than a session in the dentist’s chair. Those dirty, damp rooms with the day’s hair clippings piled high on the floor were hardly designed with pleasure in mind, so it is hardly surprising that a quick, cheap chop was all that was expected. Thankfully, those days are gone. In recent years, good grooming has become something most men take pleasure and time over. Bogarts in Hillsborough understand that men don’t just want a haircut, they want to enjoy an all round service and this is what makes them a cut above the rest. The business was established 26 years ago and in that time, has developed a loyal clientele. So much so, that sons and sons of sons have followed in their fathers’ footsteps and become regular customers themselves. At Bogarts you’ll find an enthusiastic team who pride themselves on continuously improving their service and who value every customer. That’s why the whole team have completed a customer service course to understand their clients’ needs even better. Owner Samantha Davison, who has over 30 years experience in the hairdressing industry, believes that the barber shop’s success is down to her staff’s ability to create a welcoming atmosphere, as well as their expertise in cutting and styling. You will find eight members of staff with various strengths and levels of experience so whether you want a traditional chop or

the latest trend, there’s a talented stylist for every customer at Bogarts. As well as offering an excellent walk-in service for women and men of all ages, Bogarts also sells an array of quality Mr Natty products for those wanting to tame their beards, and American Crew hair products so you can get the salon look at home. Try American Crew’s new d:fi range to give your new style ultimate hold. Want to change your shade this season? They even do hair colouring. In January, the barbershop had its own restyle. Thanks to a refit by Chris Dyson from fellow local business DCW Joinery Services Ltd, Bogarts is a fresh and modern place to enjoy being pampered, which still maintains the warmth and traditional look its regulars have come to know and love. Bogarts like to reward their customers and offer regulars £10 off when they fill up a loyalty card. They are open Monday to Saturday but for those in a hurry, there’s also a late night service on Wednesdays until 8pm. So if you’re looking for a great cut, a reliable stylist, a relaxed atmosphere and brilliant value for money, Bogarts is the number one local barber shop to visit. Why not walk in today? Samantha and her team look forward to meeting you. STANDING THE TEST OF TIME
Here’s a toast to all those companies that have achieved years of success. ixer celebrates its 21st birthday this year – but it’s not the only business to have stood the test of time. We take a look at a raft of local companies that are proud to still be part of the north Sheffield landscape after decades of hard work.

Kaleidoscope Hair and Beauty Kaleidoscope is a warm, friendly and professional salon that caters for all ages and styles. Gina Toulson (pictured) has owned the salon for almost 20 years and prides herself on listening to clients and personally selecting staff to meet the wide range of clients’ needs and personalities. Kaleidoscope has always felt like a family and the clients are an extension of that. Gina believes clients have been coming to the salon for years because they feel comfortable, confident and happy with the service, and feel they get good value for money. The highly skilled creative team use Clynol products to create beautiful hairstyles, including styling for weddings, proms and other special occasions. Each stylist offers something different. When clients come back to Kaleidoscope after not visiting for a while, they often say they are returning because Gina and her team have been here for such a long time and they can rely on a friendly welcome and good service.
Barkers Furniture This year sees the celebration of Barkers Furniture’s 100th anniversary. The founder, Ernest Morton Barker, set up shop selling draperies at Hillsborough in 1915. The business expanded during the 1920s and 1930s as Ernest’s son, Ernest William, and daughter, Alice, started work in the company. World War II was a tough time for Barkers; Ernest William was enlisted, the delivery van was given to the military and the store on The Moor was bombed. The struggles continued throughout the 1950s but improved with the third generation, Stuart Barker, who joined the firm in the 1960s. Barkers Furniture thrived with Stuart and wife Sheila at the helm; they created new showrooms and built a strong team. The 1990s saw struggles but Barkers endured when Neil Barker joined his parents. They now have two beautiful showrooms; Burton Street, showcasing upholstery and dining, and Lowther Rd, their bedroom and flooring centre. They also have a new website, which can be found at www.barkersfurniture.com. 39 Burton Street, Sheffield S6 2HH Lowther Road, Hillsborough, S6 2DQ Tel: 0114 233 2222 www.barkersfurniture.com

The independently run business has been operating for over 45 years, and today owns and manages six venues based in London, Leeds, Bradford, Hull and two in Sheffield at Ecclesall Road and Owlerton Stadium. Napoleons Owlerton is a traditional casino less than three miles from Sheffield city centre and has been at its current site since 1996. Next year it celebrates 20 years, highlighting Napoleons as a long-standing favourite in Sheffield and beyond. In October 2014, a £2million refurbishment and extension was completed, which introduced a new restaurant, new bar, new lounge, extended gaming floor, and the first outdoor gaming terrace outside of London – something Napoleons is very proud of. Often referred to as the friendly casino, Napoleons is described

Slimming World Slimming World was founded by Margaret Whittaker OBE in 1969 and has achieved phenomenal success. But it’s another lady who, for the last 20 years, has been helping local slimmers achieve their goals. Award-winning Christine Beecroft (pictured here being presented with an award by Margaret) runs a gold group in Hillsborough. “Like all consultants, I joined Slimming World as a member so I really do understand the challenges - and the joys - that losing weight brings,” says Christine. “I know that, with help and support from friendly members and myself, we can really work together and do it!” Christine has recently added a new session to her schedule. The new meeting takes place at 9am each Saturday at Hillsborough Arena (next to Hillsborough Park). If you have any queries or need a touch of reassurance before joining, call Christine on 0114 281 7860.

Accountability Accountability – a small business specialising in bookkeeping, payroll and management accounts – has been helping clients for 32 years. The professional and friendly staff offer a personal service and genuinely care about their clients and their success – as highlighted by these two glowing testimonials. Ian Watkinson of Sabre Toolmaking Ltd says: “After 15 years of trading we finally made the smart decision to subcontract the accounts and bookkeeping to Accountability, leaving me free to concentrate on the business. We now class them as partners to our business (and friends) and I can't imagine how we could function efficiently without them.” David Raynor of The Fireproof Safe Company Ltd says: “As a small start-up business which is VAT registered, our biggest concern was ensuring that our bookkeeping and VAT was in order whilst managing our overheads. We have found Accountability to be diligent, thorough and professional without being stuffy or confusing us with accountancy jargon.” 55 Mowbray Street, Sheffield, S3 8EN Tel: 0114 270 0955 www.accountabilitynorthern.com

Mike Bramall was working in the family scrap metal business in 1972, when a knock came on the office door. It was a gentleman asking if he could get hold of Krugerrands, which at the time were worth £60. Enquiries were made and a supplier was found. It was not long before another knock on the door and another enquiry from his friend. Several weeks later, there was a daily flow of customers wanting to buy gold coins, which included sovereigns, and a few weeks after that came the first enquiry for a gold and coin mount. A business was born! Seizing this new opportunity, a small showroom was formed out of part of an office and stocked with quality jewellery but sold at prices way below normal retail levels, spawning the strap line ‘Bramalls Gold Room – where quality jewellery costs less’ – a philosophy they have upheld for 43 years. In those four decades, they have seen many changes including the introduction of an in-house repair workshop and a large second-hand area. Fashions and trends have come and gone with each passing season. However, something that has never changed is their commitment to bringing the largest selection of quality gold and diamond jewellery at the best possible prices. Add to this their dedication to unbeatable friendly customer service and you have everything you could wish for in a jewellers. Bradfield Brewery How did it all start? A simple question you may think but the answer is more complex; it covers 71 years and four generations. The VAT number of Bradfield Brewery goes back to 1977 when John started his own business delivering milk in the S6 area. The home of Bradfield Brewery, Watt House Farm, goes back to 1944 when Susan’s grandfather took on the tenancy, which in time passed onto Susan’s father. She was born there in 1961 and grew up on the farm. In 1976, John and Susan got together (they called it puppy love but some old dogs are meant for each other). Susan also had a milk round in the S6 area and so, in 1981, to save on petrol, they got married and two rounds became one. A family soon followed. With Richard born in 1983 and Lisa born in 1985, they were kept very busy with a young family and helping run the farm. In 1991 Susan’s parents retired and John and Susan moved into the farm house, taking over the farm business. At around that time the milk round went and more cows arrived. Things were good until, in the late 90s, came BSE followed by foot and mouth. Over the next few years, milk prices plummeted and it was harder to make ends meet. Diversification became the buzz word in farming and one night in 2003 Richard came up with the idea of a micro-brewery. The rest, as they say, is history. Sheffield Speedway It’s the hottest - and fastest ticket in town. This summer, the Sheffield Tigers speedway team are aiming to crank things up even higher as they look to bring some long-overdue silverware to the steel city. Tigers are currently in the mix for the sport's premier league title and are in the semi-finals of the league cup in their best season for years. This is your invitation to give the family-friendly sport a try. The Tigers race every week; the modern-day gladiators battling with their rivals for four pulsating laps. The riders are on the fastest racing machines on the planet – they hit 0-70mph inside just 30 yards and they do it all with no brakes. Check out the latest fixtures on the club website at www.sheffieldspeedway.co and make it a high-speed date every Thursday night at 7.30pm. They promise you’ll come back for more!
P&W started business in 1965 in a small garage on Blast Lane. Michael Windle came from Sheaf Motors where he trained as a motor mechanic, attending night school to learn bodywork and spraying. Tom Pigot, a fully trained motor mechanic, came into the business at the same time. After moving into larger premises on Mowbray Street, they eventually moved to their current site on Neepsend Lane. Michael’s son Matthew, who helped at weekends and holidays from the age of 14, has recently bought Tom’s share in the business and is now a full partner with his dad. Matthew’s wife Nicola will be overseeing the whole business, keeping the wheels rolling in a different way, while Michael takes a back seat. Matthew, Michael and Tom would like to thank customers old and new for their past and continuing support. Matthew – along with technicians Mark Fox and Sam Spriggs – will now carry on the sterling work customers have come to expect. 36-42 Neepsend Lane, Sheffield, S3 8AU Tel: 0114 272 9996
Bogarts Samantha Davison opened Bogarts in September 1989 when she was just 18, naming the salon after an era when movie stars were iconic. She has many people to thank for her success over the years – her mum and dad for being guarantors on her first bank loan, Graham at Sweeneys who trained her and supported her through the first few years of business, and all staff and customers, past and present. This includes her sister Keilley, who first started as a Saturday girl and still works at the salon today. Other members of staff have been there for more than 15 years. Many small businesses closed after the introduction of the Supertram and during the recession but, while Bogarts had to adapt to the changes, they are proud to still be going strong. The recent refit has given the salon a fresh, ontrend new look while retaining the traditional barber feel. Samantha’s aim is for Bogarts to last at least another 26 years and to keep up the barbering tradition by training more young and enthusiastic people who will pride themselves on becoming a barber. 84 Middlewood Road, Hillsborough, S6 4HA Tel: 0114 234 7888

He now offers a wide selection of window styles guaranteed to please even the most discerning customers. A fine example of their work is the striking Moor Bank Crescent (pictured), for which Don Valley supplied all of the windows. BITS& PIECES Hillsborough Golf Club offer free membership
Wharncliffe Side Y2 pupil’s first school trip
Hillsborough Golf Club is giving young golfers the opportunity to follow in the footsteps of two of the greatest names in Yorkshire Golf, by offering free membership for youngsters aged 5-15. The Sheffield club was the breeding ground for Iain and Malcolm Mackenzie who were introduced to the game by their father Laurie, a former inside forward with Sheffield Wednesday. Malcolm played over 600 events on the European Tour and won the French Open in 2002, and elder brother Iain captained Yorkshire and was capped over one hundred times for the county. The free membership scheme was introduced last month. New director of golf Mike Peebles said: “Our goal is to grow junior golf in the Sheffield area and specifically the junior section here at Hillsborough Golf Club.” Whether they are complete beginners or have a current handicap, the club offers Saturday morning group lessons from 11.30am12.30pm at a cost of just £2 for the hour. Mike said: “For the boys and girls that already have a handicap they can start the free membership straight away, but are still very welcome to join the group lessons. “We also have a junior par 3 course where they can not only enjoy the game at a manageable level, but also learn the rules of the game and the etiquette. “Once they have achieved the standard required to enjoy and be safe on the full course they can start the 12 months free membership.”
We all remember our first overnight school trip like it was yesterday. Being away from home for perhaps the first time, was an important part of growing up and gave us an opportunity for a valuable learning experience. Wharncliffe Side Primary School’s year two pupils recently returned from their first residential trip where they spent one night at Whirlow Farm, a working farm spanning 138 acres with a variety of livestock. Pupils had hands-on experience of what it is like to live and work on a farm and did jobs like collecting eggs, grooming ponies, feeding animals and filling up water bottles. Before spending the night in either the farm house or the barn, the children enjoyed singing and listening to stories around the campfire. Although the children were tired and muddy at the end of the trip, they had a thoroughly enjoyable time, trying things they hadn't done before. It was certainly an experience they will remember and something that the year one pupils are already looking forward to taking part in next year!
Pippa to represent GB at junior climbing world championship Local schoolgirl Pippa Watkin is aiming for the top after being selected to represent Great Britain in the World Junior Climbing Championships later this summer Bradfield School pupil Pippa (13) has been climbing since she was 6. After many successes at national level, she was chosen as part of the GB Junior Lead Climbing team last year and again for 2015. This year she won the BMC National Youth Climbing Series for her age. Pippa said: "I still can't believe I have been selected to take on the best in the world, but I am determined to go and show what Sheffield and Great Britain can achieve." In May 2015, Pippa made her GB debut in a
European Cup event in Dornbirn, Austria, and she will be attending her second European event again in Austria in August. Pippa trains three or four times a week at The Foundry, in Sheffield, and at Awesome Walls. She is sponsored by Boreal, a Spanish climbing manufacturer and Bold Bunny Clothing. But receives no funding to support her training or competitions. Her climbing season will cost over £5,000, with at least £1,000 anticipated to cover her trip to the World Championships. Pippa and her family welcome any support local companies can give. To find out more, email Penny Watkin at pawatkin@sky.com

Charity chief Steve gets in gear The chief executive of a top Sheffield sport and leisure charity has raised almost £7,000 after taking part in a gruelling westcoast-to-east-coast bike ride. Steve Brailey, head of Sheffield City Trust (SCT), has completed the 170-mile Coast to Coast bike ride recently with his wife, Julie and a friend, Jill. The trio rode in aid of the Alzheimer’s Society after Julie’s mother was diagnosed with the disease five years ago, with Steve’s father recently being told he has From left: Steve Brailey, Julie Brailey, Jill Boyington and Kevin Brailey the illness as well. Steve said: “The Alzheimer’s Society is a cause incredibly close to our hearts, as we know too well the effects of the condition. There is no cure for Alzheimer’s yet and those with the condition only get worse.” The bike ride, which runs from Morecambe on the west coast to Bridlington on the east, covers 170 miles and takes place over the course of three days. It takes in a testing route including the Lake District and the Pennines, which Steve said the team found particularly tough. SCT is a local charity which helps to promote and improve fitness and wellbeing in Sheffield. It runs popular sporting venues such as Hillsborough Leisure Centre, The English Institute of Sport Sheffield (EIS Sheffield) and iceSheffield. Summer fun at Champs Summer is here at last and one of Sheffield 6’s most popular pubs is well prepared to offer plenty of family fun. Since taking over the old Yew Tree Inn in February 2014, the Champs team has transformed this formerly rundown pub into a buzzing, stylish venue. General manager Matt Burgess says: “We’ve introduced 26 new dishes to the already extensive menu, and we’ve planned a number of special events throughout the summer for both families and local drinkers.” Over the summer, kids can eat for just £1 or eat for free when you buy any main meal on Mondays. There will also be a selection of ice creams and ice lollies to keep them cool and happy. There’ll be plenty of entertainment, with a free bouncy castle in the beer garden all summer, which promises to be one of the biggest and best in the area. If you are looking for a pub with something for everyone, don’t forget Champs’ Family Fun Weekend on the 15 and 16 August. Being a sports bar, they have over 30 HD screens and three Sky boxes showing a range of sports over the summer. The bar has also become an incredibly popular venue for functions. For details of all upcoming events, be sure to like Champs on Facebook or visit www.champssheffield.com. There will be at least one big event a month this summer so make sure you don’t miss out!

Give your children the best start in life with our guide to the pick of our region’s schools and nurseries. Osborne House Community Nursery
Wharncliffe Side Primary School
When leaving your child in someone else’s care, you want to feel confident and comfortable about the nursery you choose. At Osborne House Community Nursery, you can be sure you are leaving your children in safe hands. But don’t take our word for it. They were recently judged as ‘outstanding’ in their 2014/15 OFSTED inspection. The inspector felt that: “All the children were motivated and eager to learn and highly confident in their routine and play, as well as in developing independence.” The nursery is a vibrant environment, where playing and exploring come naturally. The enthusiastic and fully qualified staff know the children well and promote their personal and emotional development to the highest standard, providing children with stimulating and structured activities. They care for babies and children aged three months to five years. They are open Monday-Friday 8am-6pm and free sessions are available for three and four-year-olds.

If you want your children to have the best education and achieve their full potential, Wharncliffe Side provides the perfect environment for them to do so. Wharncliffe Side Primary School has a strongly inclusive ethos and believes that all children are special and deserve the chance to meet their full potential. Their OFSTED 2014 report described their pupils as: “interested and enthusiastic” about their learning experience and they are encouraged to be respectful to one another. Situated on the edge of Sheffield in beautiful rural surroundings, the school may be small, but it is able to offer placements from nursery classes, right up to year 6. The school is proud of its welcoming atmosphere and its extensive outdoor learning environment. They are currently hosting visits to view the school for reception class 2016.

Corner House Nursery Corner House Nursery has been a family run business for 21 years and believes in providing children with the best start in life by giving them lots of exciting and challenging play experiences. They proudly achieved ‘outstanding’ in their July 2014 OFSTED inspection. The Victorian building is set in a third of an acre of land and offers four outdoor play areas, including an adventure playground and a nature garden. They also have three onsite cooks who provide healthy, home-cooked meals. Children can stay for as little as half a day, to as much as a full week, with a flexible package of care to fit working parents. SIXERHISTORY
TALES FROM THE FRONT LINE The horrors of war are laid bare in a brand new book with local interest. Phoebe Seymour looks at the revealing diary of war veteran, Harry Askin. renches, rats, bullet wounds, bad food – we’ve all become familiar with the horrors of the First World War. But just imagine for a moment that you are a patriotic, young man from Sheffield, keen to serve his country and go on an adventure. Harry Askin was one of these men. He was 22 when he decided to leave his home in Crookes to enlist at Nottingham to join the Royal Marines in September 1914. He trained at Portsmouth, set sail with the Mediterranean Expeditionary Force in February 1915 and arrived at Gallipoli on 25 April 1915. A hundred years later, his granddaughter Jean Baker, with help from her cousins Gaynor Newlyn and Nicola Woollaston, published A Marine at Gallipoli And On The Western Front: The Diary of Harry Askin on 25 April 2015. The book is an honest, day-to-day account of life at two different front lines. “I think the reason the book is so interesting, is that it describes war so vividly without being glorified,” says Jean. Before Harry went to war, he worked as a greengrocer at his father’s store on South Road in Walkley. As a child, he was clever and had an interest in painting, but his parents could not afford to send him to grammar school. Harry applied his artistic eye to Gallipoli, and a couple of his sketches appear in the book. One is of an abandoned building called Brown House, which Jean believes the troops took shelter in.

Jean recently took a trip to Gallipoli to see the war monument and Cape Helles, the beach where her grandfather landed and was met by heavy gunfire from the Turks. “It was a Jean at the Gallipoli memorial very emotional experience to stand where my grandfather had stood. I looked for Brown House, but it was long gone. I did see the castle ruins he talks about though,” says Jean. “I’m just so thankful he lived, so that we could hear his story.” And it sounds as though Harry had quite a few close shaves. He was shot three times in total; the first time was in the hand in Gallipoli between 1915 and 1916, the second was in the thigh when he came face to face with a German on the Western Front, and the third happened as he was carried away on a stretcher for his second gunshot wound. Luckily, Harry was sent home for commission (to be made a second lieutenant), when the Battle of Passchendaele took place in 1917. This is now considered one of the worst battles of World War I for casualties, with the British losing an estimated 275,000 soldiers. Harry had also been allowed to go home to marry his sweetheart Mary in December 1916, but was swiftly sent back to the Western Front two days later. It was two years before he saw her again. “He wrote to her a lot, but the letters would all come at once, a few months later,” says Jean. Thankfully, Harry survived and he and Mary went on to have one daughter (Jean’s mum) Nancy and one son William. Jean is one of four granddaughters and is now delighted to have three children and five grandchildren of her own to pass Harry’s story down to. Now, as we sit in Jean’s conservatory looking

over the original diary Harry wrote and dedicated to his wife, she shows me a cane covered in what looks like leather and which once belonged to him. The story she tells me is more like an ancient legend, than one from a World War I diary. “He was walking along a dried up river in Gallipoli when he came in contact with a snake,” explains Jean. “He killed it and covered the cane with its skin.” Living on small portions of tinned meat and stale biscuits, Jean imagines he ate the snake meat too. Harry Askin returned to live in Crookes and Millhouses after the war ended in 1918, but like many other soldiers, could not escape the psychological impact of the war. “He would wander off for walks. One time, he was gone for days and had gone to live in a cave. He always loved the Derbyshire countryside.” In a time when posttraumatic stress and talking to counsellors was unheard of, writing out his memoirs must have been therapeutic. “He never spoke about the war, so writing it all down probably did help him deal with it,” agrees Jean. “I think all the men were naïve when they joined the army. I don’t think they realised how bad it was until they arrived on the beach at Gallipoli and the Turks were firing at them.” History buffs are sure to love this realistic story of life in the trenches, but why should the rest of us read A Marine at Gallipoli and The Western Front? “I think its something everyone should read. It’s not just told by someone who hasn’t been to war, it’s told from the perspective of a real life soldier,” says Jean. “And even I’ve learnt a lot. My grandfather says he stood on the ‘firestep’, so I had to look up what it meant. It meant climbing up, out of the trenches to fire at the enemy so it was very dangerous.” Jean says she is surprised by how well the book has been received already. “The reaction has been unbelievable. I did a Facebook post the day the book was released and it got 300 likes in 15 minutes,” she says. “We’ve sold 200 copies so far. Most of these have been sold in Sheffield, but they have been selling all over the country through Amazon too. It’s had a positive reaction and I think my grandfather would be really pleased!” A Marine at Gallipoli and The Western Front is available from WHSmith, Waterstones and online at Amazon. It is also available to buy as an ebook.

PROMOTIONCOLLECTIVE LEGAL SOLUTIONS
You need to take advice if…
Lasting Power of Attorney: the myth and the reality. any people have heard of a lasting power of attorney (previously an Enduring Power of Attorney), but they associate it with something you arrange later in life when you “start feeling iffy”. Here we will investigate some of the myths and realities surrounding mental incapacity and Lasting Power of Attorney.
M
MYTH: Mental incapacity is something that only affects people in later life through illnesses such as Alzheimer’s, so I don’t need to do anything just yet. REALITY Accident or illness can strike at any time, often without warning. The consequences of failing to plan can be significant, as outlined in this article. Why leave something so important to chance?
• You or your spouse/partner don’t yet have a Will. • You have a Will but it leaves everything to your spouse/partner.
MYTH: If I suffer an accident or illness, my spouse or children will automatically be able to take over the running of my affairs as my next of kin. REALITY: Your spouse or children have no automatic right to act on your behalf. Without a Lasting Power of Attorney, they will be required to apply to the Court of Protection to be appointed as your Deputy – a long, complex, costly and intrusive process.
• You don’t have both kinds of Lasting Powers of Attorney set up. • You or your spouse/partner don’t have a pre-paid Funeral Plan.
MYTH: I can simply add my spouse or children to my bank accounts, as a joint account holder would just carry on as normal in the event of my mental incapacity. REALITY: Banks are guided by the British Bankers’ Association to freeze both solely and jointly held accounts where one account holder loses mental capacity (they may allow pre-authorised payments).
• You are divorced or widowed. • You have children.
MYTH: When creating a Lasting Power of Attorney, it’s best to appoint my spouse and children to act together jointly. REALITY: Many poorly advised individuals have fallen into this trap. Appointing family jointly means they must act together in all matters, rendering the Lasting Power of Attorney useless when one of the appointed family can’t act – incapacity or death is not an excuse!
• You are concerned about what will happen and covering the costs if you need long term residential care.
MYTH: If anything happens to me and a decision needs to be made about life sustaining treatment, the doctor will automatically follow the wishes of my next of kin. REALITY: Only through a Lasting Power of Attorney can you give the people you trust the right to make choices about your health and welfare, including the ability to refuse lifesustaining treatment if you wish. A Lasting Power of Attorney is often likened to an insurance policy – you hope you’ll never need it, but your family will be very grateful for your foresight if you do. It’s the only way to have your say about who you trust to manage your affairs and make things as simple as possible for your loved ones.

GIVE A DOG A HOME Dec the greyhound with Lynda and Roy Cattlin and kennel hands Zena Evans and Donna Williams
t was surprisingly quiet as I pulled up to Rotherham Gate Lodge in Wortley. I’d been expecting a chorus of howls, yelps and barks to greet me at Sheffield Retired Greyhound Trust’s (SRGT) new site and wondered if I’d come to the right place. (I should probably admit here that, having got lost on my way there, I’d been gallantly rescued from the depths of Howbrook by the trust’s chairman – and MD of Owlerton – John Gilburn, so I definitely was in the right place.) Nevertheless, when you think kennels, you think noise – and there was none. It turns out, greyhounds are fairly quiet creatures and, as I was soon to find out, this was just one of many little-known facts about the graceful animals. My visit came less than two weeks after their big move to Howbrook Lane. After nine years

at Gosling Moor Farm, in May they travelled a mile up the road to this brand new facility on the Wortley Estate. The new site, built by Designer Kennels, has room for up to 28 dogs at a time and, though there are currently only 15 there – aged from 19 months to seven years – new deliveries are arriving all the time. The SRGT is part of the national Retired Greyhound Trust, Britain’s largest single-breed animal charity which was founded in 1975 and now has more than 70 branches across Britain. Around 8,000 greyhounds a year retire from racing and in the last 40 years the trust has rehomed more than 70,000 of them. The Sheffield branch – the biggest of its kind in the north of England – was responsible for 113 of those rehomes last year, making it one of the most active in the country. But John is keen to point out that they are not rescue dogs. “They’re ex-racers, mostly from Sheffield, and the trust acts as a kind of

‘People think they need a lot of exercise but that’s a myth. At the track, a dog runs one race a night – usually once a week apart from training. As pets, they require two 20-minute walks a day, unless it’s raining, in which case they’d much rather stay inside.’ half-way house until they find their forever home. The biggest difficulty is homing black dogs but I prefer them; I think they look majestic.” The site is funded by Owlerton (along with a great deal of fundraising) and run by home finder Lynda Cattlin and her husband, kennel manager Roy, who live on site and since 2006 have dedicated their lives to caring for and rehoming the animals. “When we saw the advert for this job, I thought ‘I need to do it’,” says Roy. “It’s a cracking job and very rewarding. Greyhounds usually retire between three and five years of age, or earlier if injured. Basically, if it’s not good for them to race anymore, this is where they come. We rehabilitate them and, because they’re so used to set regimes at the stadium, it’s as if they go through puppyhood again. After about two weeks, you start to see their personality.” As Roy showed me round the new facilities, he explained what is needed to take care of a greyhound and I began to build a more accurate picture of their lifestyles. It was around 1.30pm by this point and, while there was some excitement when we first entered the kennels (cue the barking I’d been initially expecting), the dogs soon retreated to the comfort of their raised beds for an afternoon of snoozing. I was quickly realising that greyhounds, despite their sprinting prowess, are the laziest dogs around. “It’s like owning a large cat,” laughed Roy. “People think they need a lot of exercise but that’s a myth. At the track, a dog runs one race a night – usually once a week apart from training. As pets, they require two 20-minute walks a day, unless it’s raining, in which case they’d much rather stay inside.” You’ll rarely find a greyhound off the lead while on one of their brief jaunts. Their propensity as sight hounds to chase after anything small and furry means rabbits, squirrels and cats can distract even the best-behaved dogs. It’s for this reason that many are also fitted with a muzzle, which is provided to everyone who offers to walk one of the SRGT greyhounds. Seven days a week between 8am and 12noon, people can visit the trust and, after signing a simple volunteer agreement, enjoy a stroll around the countryside with a pooch in tow. A map, devised by kennel hands Zena Evans and Donna Williams, has one short walk, a wheelchair-friendly path and two longer routes to choose from. The walks also allow people who are thinking of adopting one of the greyhounds to become acquainted with them and their habits. If you take a shine to one, you can provisionally reserve them while you fully consider your options and discuss any

concerns with the SRGT staff. Every greyhound is neutered and vaccinated and comes with a walking coat, a collar, a lead and a muzzle. All that’s required is a mere £130 donation, and the approval of Lynda. “No dog leaves here without proper home checks so we are absolutely certain that the dog and home are suitable for each other,” said Roy. “We also offer plenty of aftercare advice and a pampering service, and we are always on the end of the phone to answer questions.” All too soon my visit had come to an end and I was saying goodbye to the team. But having taken a particular shine to Dec, a dark brindle greyhound who is SRGT’s longest standing resident of 17 months, I knew it wouldn’t be long before I was back up in Wortley, exploring the beautiful region with Dec at my side.

TOUGH AT THE TOP
Cyclists will face their toughest test again, as the Bradfield Hill Climb returns. Fiona Barber looks at what’s in store for the riders. he day was grey and wet, thigh muscles burned with tension and faces grimaced with exertion as local cyclists attempted one of the toughest tests in the region – The Bradfield Hill Climb. Now in its second year, the challenge will take place on 10 July at 7.30pm when, once again, riders will be pushed to their absolute limits.

Certainly not for the faint hearted, the ascent begins at the bottom of Woodfall Lane and finishes outside of the Old Horns pub. While the stretch measures just 0.8km, an average gradient of 12 per cent – and at its steepest point, 35 per cent – ensures a true test of stamina, even for the most experienced cyclists. Held just two days before the Tour de France last year, the race was part of the Steel Stage Festival at High Bradfield, a weekend of camping and free entertainment launched by Andrew Elston, owner of Langsett Cycles. Marc Etches – who is known locally for promoting major cycling events – is organising the hill climb for the second year running. Andrew says the hill climb last year really kicked off the weekend and the next day an 80km sportive charity cycle ride took place over part of the tour route, which raised over £3,300 for Marie Curie and The Sheffield Children’s Hospital Charity. Bradfield Brewery also held a beer festival and local

events company FGOWI arranged live music and entertainment throughout the weekend. Andrews says: “There was a fantastic atmosphere, despite the early rain. Over 1,000 people came out to watch, and the riders said it was incredible. The crowd parted just in time as they rode up the climb – just like they do on the classic tour climbs in the Alps and Pyrenees. The view from the finish allows you to look down and see the riders struggle up the hill, you can take in the spectacular scenery and there’s a pub and a brewery at the top... it’s perfect.” While hill climbs are usually held around autumn, at the end of the racing season, or often in the middle of nowhere with only other cyclists watching, the Bradfield hill climb provided the perfect opportunity for many non-cyclists to witness a part of the action. Almost 60 amateurs and semi-pro riders competed last year and Adam Kenway, from the Zenith Buzz team, claimed victory with a time of two minutes and 15 seconds. The fastest female was Emilie Verroken, from the Langsett Cycles Race Team, who finished in three minutes and 21 seconds. The climb was a stand-out event for many, and Andrew says he was so impressed with the way local residents and businesses embraced the event and the weekend. “I had so many people contact me to say how much they had enjoyed it and we must put it on again. A lot of people that live on the south side of the city didn’t even know how beautiful Bradfield was, as they only ever went straight out into the Peak District.” Spreading the word about the beauty of Bradfield is just one way in which the tour has had a positive impact on Sheffield. “As a cyclist it has certainly made the road surface a lot better UPCOMING T: N along the tour route,” E V E CYCLING Andrew says. “You m la al H Sheffield certainly see more people d n ra G University out cycling. get out on our bikes and say: I’ve ridden on the same roads as the world’s best cyclists. How many footballers can say they’ve played at Wembley and Old Trafford? “It would be nice to see the city build on this enthusiasm for cycling. We’re a large city surrounded by beautiful scenery and Yorkshire now seems to be becoming the home of UK cycling – let’s hope Sheffield can be included in that.” As with most local events, they wouldn’t get off the ground without people putting money into the pot. Andrew says they try to use and support local businesses as much as possible and gives special thanks to the event’s main sponsors Linbrooke Services and Langsett Cycles. Prizes have also been kindly provided by Bradfield Brewery, Old Horns pub, Bradfield Loxley Nurseries and Full Volume. The event this year will be held on closed roads, which will be even better for riders and spectators. With spectacular surroundings, a fantastic atmosphere and impressive riding – this event is one not to be missed.

Welcome to the future of body shaping, skin tightening and wrinkle reduction! Exilis treatment offers cosmetic improvement without surgery. WHAT AREAS CAN BE TREATED WITH EXILIS? Virtually any area can be treated thanks to the precisely engineered applicator. Real time skin temperature monitoring means the ability to deliver maximum power to a desired depth without discomfort.
Prices start from
£65.00
HOW DOES EXILIS WORK? per session During the session, the Exilis computercontrolled device is guided over the treatment area. You feel a warming sensation as the energy is delivered to the deeper layers of skin. Exilis focuses the energy on the specific treatment areas at the targeted depth of penetration. By causing the collagen supporting tissues to remodel, Exilis stimulates and strengthens the collagen network to improve skin laxity and texture. Exilis is recommended for any patient between the ages of 20 and 70+ who desires cosmetic improvement. THE PROCEDURE We recommend four to six sessions at a rate of one every week. You can have additional treatments every 6 months. Results last up to 12-18 months after the Exilis treatment.

PROMOTIONBERTRAM AND ILLINGWORTH LTD Kay and John Illingworth
Long-established firm Bertram and Illingworth is offering property to rent at Niagara Works, Wadsley Bridge. here are few companies that boast such longevity in Sheffield as Bertram and Illingworth. This well-established company has roots that stretch back as far as 1888, and although its purpose has changed from building properties to a lettings company, the business still provides the same honest, fair and friendly service as ever. The family company is now run by managing director John Illingworth and his daughter Katy, but it all began with James Bertram over 120 years ago in his house at Niagara Works. James ran his very successful building business from the property and, when he died in 1945, Harold Illingworth and his family moved in. When Harold took over, apart from the building workers, there were also two blacksmiths and wheelwrights on the books, who continued to be employed for some years. The Bertram name was held in such high regard that Harold decided it would live on in his building company and Bertram and Illingworth Limited became one of Sheffield’s most established building companies. They worked on anything
T
from the universities and hospitals to relay stations for the BBC, as well as carrying out repair projects, and employed up to 70 men at one time. Harold’s son, John, worked for the company after he left school and eventually took over. The business continued until 2005, when John decided it was time for semi-retirement and began letting out properties they own in the area – including the building at Niagara Works. The old house is now available to rent and has recently been recarpeted and converted into an office block, which consists of six well-proportioned offices on two floors, as well as attic and cellar storage. They are willing to split the space in to separate units, so if you’re looking to rent a whole floor, or just one office, this could be the perfect opportunity. They also have a refurbished workshop area to rent in a separate building at the side of the house. John says: “Our ethos has always been to be straight with people and to let buildings at a fair price. We’ve not put some of the rent up for ten years; we just want to keep people happy.” If you’d like to rent the office space, or workshop area then call John 07831664122 or Katy 07813 562873. There’s no doubt you’ll receive a friendly, reliable service. Bertram and Illingworth Limited Niagara Works, Beeley Wood Rd, Sheffield, S6 1NH Tel: 0114 449 9637
