SIXERDO YOU REMEMBER? ox Valley, Stocksbridge’s new £50million retail development, has just been launched... but the site has had various uses over the years. Its history of steel manufacturing began in 1842, when Samuel Fox established his own wire-drawing business. In the 1850s, Samuel’s employee Joseph Hayward invented the paragon umbrella frame. In 1918, Samuel Fox & Co. formed the United Steel Company with several other companies and, for the next 50 years, specialised in steel springs, alloy and other stainless steels, employing up to 7,000 people. High quality steel for the aviation industry, springs for Rolls Royce and razor blade strips were also manufactured. It became known as Stocksbridge Engineering Steels in the 1980s and 1990s, before it was taken over by Corus in 1999, and then Tata in 2006. To this day, the speciality steel plant, which lies adjacent to Fox Valley, produces world-class products. There are no prizes for guessing which year this photograph was taken but we’d be interested to know if it triggers any memories among Sixer readers. Getting up and down has never been easier, thanks to Barkers One of the problems with ageing seems to be the whole getting up and down, or in and out situation. Whether it be in bed, the stairs, bath or armchairs, things just seem to get more difficult. All this could change with a visit to either of the Barkers Furniture showrooms in Hillsborough. At Burton Street you will find a good range of comfortable chairs with great support for your back. You may prefer one which has an electronic motor that slowly raises you to your feet, or from your feet to a comfortable sitting position. You can recline and put your feet up, all at the touch of a button. You’ll be comfortable and relaxed, it could really change your life. You will be made very welcome at Barkers Furniture, a traditional family run business whose staff will be eager to give great customer service, without being pushy. They will help you to find the best product for you, whether it be a comfortable chair, a new sofa or a bed. With many famous brands available you are sure to find a quality piece of furniture that is perfect for you. At the Penistone Road showroom Barkers also have on display a range of electric adjustable beds. These allow you to control your sleeping position and can be particularly useful for anyone with mobility issues as well as having benefits for a range of other conditions. Anyone who suffers from swelling complaints can relieve the pressure and pain

by elevating their affected limbs. By raising limbs above heart level the pressure in this part of the body is released and circulation improves. This being a far more consistent method than placing pillows beneath limbs.

In addition, for people suffering with chronic pain, an adjustable bed can help by easing you in and out of bed every day. They also provide a range of positions to sleep in. Each time you elevate your back or legs you are realigning your vertebrae and adjusting the pressure they place on your nerves and spine. An example being if your lower back is sore it is recommended that you elevate your legs, creating a pelvic tilt which can relieve strain on the affected muscles. It has also been found that sleeping in a slightly more upright position has the additional benefit of decreasing snoring, as this often occurs due to blocked airways!

PROMOTIONCOLLECTIVE LEGAL SOLUTIONS

You need to take advice if…

Lasting Power of Attorney: the myth and the reality. any people have heard of a lasting power of attorney (previously an Enduring Power of Attorney), but they associate it with something you arrange later in life when you “start feeling iffy”. Here we will investigate some of the myths and realities surrounding mental incapacity and Lasting Power of Attorney.

M

MYTH: Mental incapacity is something that only affects people in later life through illnesses such as Alzheimer’s, so I don’t need to do anything just yet. REALITY Accident or illness can strike at any time, often without warning. The consequences of failing to plan can be significant, as outlined in this article. Why leave something so important to chance?

• You or your spouse/partner don’t yet have a Will. • You have a Will but it leaves everything to your spouse/partner.

MYTH: If I suffer an accident or illness, my spouse or children will automatically be able to take over the running of my affairs as my next of kin. REALITY: Your spouse or children have no automatic right to act on your behalf. Without a Lasting Power of Attorney, they will be required to apply to the Court of Protection to be appointed as your Deputy – a long, complex, costly and intrusive process.

• You don’t have both kinds of Lasting Powers of Attorney set up. • You or your spouse/partner don’t have a pre-paid Funeral Plan.

MYTH: I can simply add my spouse or children to my bank accounts, as a joint account holder would just carry on as normal in the event of my mental incapacity. REALITY: Banks are guided by the British Bankers’ Association to freeze both solely and jointly held accounts where one account holder loses mental capacity (they may allow pre-authorised payments).

• You are divorced or widowed. • You have children.

MYTH: When creating a Lasting Power of Attorney, it’s best to appoint my spouse and children to act together jointly. REALITY: Many poorly advised individuals have fallen into this trap. Appointing family jointly means they must act together in all matters, rendering the Lasting Power of Attorney useless when one of the appointed family can’t act – incapacity or death is not an excuse!

• You are concerned about what will happen and covering the costs if you need long term residential care.

MYTH: If anything happens to me and a decision needs to be made about life sustaining treatment, the doctor will automatically follow the wishes of my next of kin. REALITY: Only through a Lasting Power of Attorney can you give the people you trust the right to make choices about your health and welfare, including the ability to refuse lifesustaining treatment if you wish. A Lasting Power of Attorney is often likened to an insurance policy – you hope you’ll never need it, but your family will be very grateful for your foresight if you do. It’s the only way to have your say about who you trust to manage your affairs and make things as simple as possible for your loved ones.

A bright future

WELCOME TO AN EXCITING NEW ERA AND A FRESH START FOR A BUSINESS CELEBRATING ITS 30TH ANNIVERSARY THIS MONTH. RMC Media is the new name for Regional Magazine Company, which was launched 30 years ago when the first issue of Westside, a quality lifestyle magazine for Sheffield and North Derbyshire, dropped on the doormats of 20,000 homes. Much has changed since then, and with a new website, a flourishing books division and a new online-only title called Vibe – as well as our stable of nine monthly lifestyle and business titles – the new company name is a more accurate reflection of the wide range of projects that come under the RMC umbrella. Over the following pages we’ll explain about the exciting changes afoot, as well as taking a look back at how we’ve grown over the years.

#30YearsofRMC PUBLISHERS OF WESTSIDE, SOUTHSIDE, NORTHSIDE, EASTSIDE, SIXER, IMAGE, PULSE, FIRST FOR BUSINESS & CITYMAG

BRAND NEW LOOK

Exciting times for RMC WE HAVE A NEW NAME, A NEW LOGO AND A NEW WEBSITE – WHAT BETTER WAY TO CELEBRATE 30 YEARS IN BUSINESS? ur 30th year marks an exciting new era for the company. The brand new name, RMC Media, comes with a vibrant new logo and a fresh new image to reflect the multi-faceted nature of our thriving business as it looks to the future.

O

Name Our journey began in 1986 with Westside magazine and, over the last three decades, has flourished into one of the most successful media companies in Yorkshire. Today, in addition to our eight monthly lifestyle titles, business magazine and numerous special publications, we also produce high quality cookbooks for prestigious chefs and restaurants, sell articles to like-minded publications, help budding

2

entrepreneurs establish their own magazines, and host glittering events. The name RMC Media draws on our wellestablished heritage while reflecting our propensity for exciting new projects. Under this new moniker, the future is bright for our dynamic team.

Logo Vibrant, multi-talented, forward-thinking: on these three pillars our new image was built. Working with Sheffield design agency Ink & Water, we established a logo that reflects the many different elements of RMC Media. The seven coloured shapes each represent an arm of the business: VIBE, magazines, books, restaurant guide, events, competitions and publishing services.

BRAND NEW LOOK

A window into our world WITH SHEFFIELD DIGITAL AGENCY HYDRA CREATIVE, WE HAVE LAUNCHED A BRAND NEW WEBSITE – WWW.RMCMEDIA.CO.UK – SHOWCASING THE WEALTH OF SERVICES RMC MEDIA OFFERS. VIBE A key feature of the new website – and an exciting new addition to the RMC Media portfolio – is VIBE, an online lifestyle magazinestyle website for Sheffield. For full details, turn to page 10.

MAGAZINES Each of our nine monthly titles now has its own microsite featuring digital page-turning versions of the magazine, as well as up-to-date news, articles and pictures that reflect and enhance the content of the printed publications.

RMC BOOKS Our book division has been operating as a successful publisher of high quality books for many years and now counts the likes of Chewton Glen, Simpsons, The Magpie Café, Crab House Café, Lakeland, Salvo’s, Westminster Kingsway College – and many, many more – among its satisfied clients. We’re now delighted to be bringing this aspect of the business under the banner of RMC Media.

RESTAURANT GUIDE Another brand new feature for the website is the restaurant guide, a comprehensive online guide to eating out in and around Yorkshire. From cafés and pubs to the region’s most prestigious dining establishments – and everything in between – it will include every kind of eatery available. Each entry comes with a short review, prices, opening hours, address details and a star rating so diners have all the information they need to make an informed choice.

COMPETITIONS Thousands of entries pour in for our competitions each month. From tickets for sold-out shows to luxury holidays to highly sought-after products, and much more, we always have something special up for grabs. Our most exciting competition to date, however, is open for online entries right now. To celebrate 30 years of RMC, we have 30 fantastic prizes from some of Yorkshire’s best businesses and one lucky person will win them all. See page 12 for all the details.

EVENTS Firmly established as key events in the Yorkshire foodie calendar, the Westside and Eastside Restaurant of the Year Awards recognise the wealth of culinary talent in our region. The annual ceremonies showcase these high standards and the awards themselves provide an exceptional promotional tool for the winners long after the champagne corks have popped. RMC Media also hosts special celebrations whenever the opportunity arises.

PUBLISHING SERVICES With so much experience under our belt, it is only fair that we share our expertise. With ‘Start Your Own Magazine’, we help new magazines get off the ground with all the information entrepreneurs need to launch a successful new publication. Through ‘Buy Magazine Articles’, we sell features to other high quality publications. In addition, we offer a host of other publicity and marketing solutions to businesses in Yorkshire and beyond.

RMC: A TIMELINE

July 1986 Westside Published in the summer of ‘86, the first edition of Westside was just 32 pages but, such was its popularity, within the year it had doubled in size. From the very beginning local restaurants played a key part and in the first issue Marvin Close served up a selection of his favourite tried and tested restaurants – Deakins and San Remo in Sheffield, Ye Olde Cheshire Cheese Inn and the George Restaurant and Hotel in Derbyshire all came up trumps. We have continued to support local restaurants over the years and now, the annual Westside Restaurant Awards, which celebrates the region’s finest, is one of the hottest events on the Sheffield social calendar. Our gossip column Gnome appeared very early on. This anonymous spy infiltrated the lives and parties of Westside people and gave readers a banquet of salacious gossip to feast upon. “Who is the Gnome?” became the question on everybody’s lips. Of course, we never told. In May 1989 Westside went on the hunt for the region’s most beautiful people. Women in the fashion business nominated from the ranks of men and Barnsley hairdresser Simon Nicholls was chosen for his effortless style. Managing director Tony Morgan was nominated by beautician Lynda Price who said: “He’s not a towering six footer but he’s got everything else and he looks good whatever he wears.” The first Westside June Guide was produced in 1991 to celebrate the World Student Games coming to Sheffield. This magazine is now an annual listings guide including restaurants, shops, and things to see and do in the region. Looking forward to the Millennium, in 1999 Westside got all geared up with its guide to the best Champagne. We gathered a panel of restaurateurs at Fischer’s Baslow Hall for a tasting. They tried 13 different bottles at varying prices and the winner was a budget bubbly, Tesco’s Champagne Brut. Westside has always tried to take a light-hearted approach wherever possible and in 2011 we cocked a snook at the recession with a typical quirky look at the various ways at which you could squander a lot of money very quickly. From buying a sports car with plummeting value to having your locks trimmed at a high-end salon, we discovered there’s plenty ways to splash the cash. Of course, none of Westside’s longevity would have been possible without the backing of our advertisers and some – including the likes of Blundells and PA Jewellery, who advertised in the very first issue – have been with us from the start.

“The Gnome infiltrated the lives and parties of Westside people and gave readers a banquet of salacious gossip to feast upon. ‘Who is the Gnome?’ became the question on everybody’s lips.”

June 1989 Eastside In the first issue of the quality magazine for Doncaster, Rotherham and North Notts we investigated the ins and outs of owning a racehorse, meeting a syndicate based in the Pilgrim Father pub in Scrooby, who paid £450 each for a part-share in a nag that might one day lead them to the winner’s enclosure. With our official partnership status with Doncaster Racecourse and the St Leger Festival, Eastside has retained a strong equine focus and the magazine regularly features upcoming race days and photos from the many events. We’ve always enjoyed a good gossip here at Eastside, and our resident party animal Toad has been at the heart of the social scene for a long time, making its debut in the spring of ‘97. Rather like Doctor Who, this is a beast that changes form every few years, but our appetite for party pictures and local lifestyle news never fades. The new millennium saw Eastside enjoying an exclusive face-to-face with Doncaster’s own Jeremy Clarkson. He was quick to deny national newspaper reports that he had been rude about his home town but, in the same breath, could not resist having a dig at Rotherham and Mexborough. Eastside has always kept a very close eye on the local dining scene and three years ago we stepped up our support Recipe for for the region’s fabulous restaurants with our first Eastside Rules of success attraction Restaurant Awards, which has enjoyed great success each True romance year at The Crown Hotel, Bawtry. With its many boutiques, restaurants and thriving community spirit, the market town of Bawtry lies at the heart Down the aisle... of Eastside Magazine. with other event speakers Paul McKenna and media mogul Jamal Edwards. Most recently, in last month’s issue, writer Andy Waple took a look at the Sheffield Olympic Legacy Park, which will be built on the former site of Don Valley Stadium. This £55million project will nurture the region’s sports research and development, health and wellbeing, as well as providing a school, college and some small stadia to support basketball and rugby. With world-class venues such as the English Institute of Sport already in place, the development of the Olympic Legacy Park will be the final piece of the Lower Don Valley Jigsaw. FFB has survived in an era in which many print publications have become obsolete. This is a clear reflection that FFB has always delivered what its readers want and has a strong standing within the local business community.

first for business THE OFFICIAL MAGAZINE FOR THE SHEFFIELD CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

LEADING THE BUSINESS DEBATE IN SHEFFIELD CITY REGION

August 1994 Sixer From fun, local features, and interviews with the likes of Sheffield Wednesday women’s team captain Steph Spence in 1999, to more serious topics, like how local businesses bounced back after the flood of 25 June 2007, Sixer has been at the heart of North Sheffield. In March 2004 we selflessly went in search of Hillsborough’s tastiest pork sandwiches. Four sandwich shops were put to the test. Baps from the Hungry Wolf, Béres Pork Shop, Biltons and Lily’s were all judged on quality of meat, bread, stuffing and sauce. Béres (which has been around since 1961) was declared the winner, with Lily’s in second place, and Biltons and Hungry Wolf in joint third. Always keen to keep in touch with local celebs, in January 2008 we caught up with Chapeltown lad Steve Peat. He grew up riding in Wharncliffe Woods and trained as an apprentice plumber, and it was his boss who introduced him to his first race. By 2008 he was twice World Champion, seven times British Champion and twice European Champion. In October 2011 we featured amateur dramatic society, the Stannington Players, who were celebrating 60 years of entertaining locals with quality theatre. The group has a rich history that dates back to just after the war; they actually began as a play-reading society in people’s houses. There were many name changes over the years but the group formally formed as the Stannington Players in 1951. TOUR In 2014 the Tour De France was one of – if not the – biggest DE FRANCE events to ever grace the rolling hills of North Sheffield. This N o r t h S hef fi el d all-cycling issue featured a Tour De France guide, an we lc o m e s t h e wo r l d ’ s greatest cycle race explanation of the jerseys, an interview with Team Sky’s Ben Swift, cycling fashion and a feature on the Bradfield Hill Climb. First For Business (FFB) delivers the latest business news and views from the Sheffield City Region to the desks of business leaders in South Yorkshire and the North Midlands. It offers a strong, independent voice which has given it a standing within the local business community since it launched over 25 years ago. While plenty has changed over the last 26 years, much of what matters to the business community remains the same. As far back as 1990 hot topics included transport, manufacturing and city centre regeneration. Sound familiar? Of course, these are the issues that matter when you are trying to make your city – or region – as economically successful as possible and no doubt in years to come we’ll still be discussing them. And we’re sure you’ll be reading all about them in FFB! Here are some highlights from the last 26 years. In March 1995 we ran a feature about the way new trademark laws (introduced in the 1994 Trade Marks Act) were making things easier for companies. The same issue included a feature on the latest phase of the Victoria Quays project including news that Nabarro Nathanson would occupy newly-built offices on the site. The following year we asked: should businesses be on the internet? There followed a detailed explanation of the various uses of the internet, including a relatively unknown form of communication: the ‘email’. Would it ever catch on? We thought it had a chance. Back in June 2008 the cover of now-monthly FFB featured none other than Sheffield golden girl Jessica Ennis-Hill. Andy Waple wrote: ‘Jessica Ennis, one of Britain’s top athletes cruelly robbed of an Olympic challenge in Beijing, is a perfect example of the new kind of export that is helping to reinforce the message that Made in Sheffield is still an international mark of quality’. As well as a keen focus on business news, FFB has interviewed some influential business people, including former director-general of the BBC, chairman of the Football Association and Sheffield hotelier Greg Dyke and TV Dragon James Caan, who was FFB’s cover star in 2010. He shared his views on business in an accompanying interview. In September 2014, FFB became an official media partner for MADE: The Entrepreneur Festival. This issue featured speaker Michelle Mone on the cover and included interviews

November 1995 Northside Northside’s first issue was delivered to select homes in Leeds in November 1995 and, by June 1996, it was also being read in York and Harrogate. The cover of the inaugural edition featured Emmerdale actor Ian Kelsey, who had been judged Leeds’ most eligible bachelor by our editorial team. In the same year, Ian was nominated for Most Popular Newcomer in the National Television Awards for his role as Dave Glover in the soap. We picked a winner whose good looks have stayed on our screens, more recently Ian has appeared in Doctors as Howard Bellamy. Also in that first issue we reviewed two of the area’s best-loved restaurants at the time. Paris at Calverley was praised for its deep fried prawns in filo pastry, with cinnamon and ginger chutney starter and roast lamb joint. Northside predicted Paris would ‘thrive on its own genuine individuality for years to come’ and we were right; Paris continued to flourish for 12 years after our review. Our dish of the month came from The Drum and Monkey in Harrogate. Fillet of whiting with crab stuffing and glazed hollandaise was on the menu, and The Drum and Monkey’s chef Tina Nuttall explained how Northsiders could recreate the dish at home. At the time the

restaurant had been running for 23 years after being transformed from a pub, and today it is still a strong favourite for seafood in Harrogate. From fine dining to fast cars, motoring has always been a big part of Northside, and over the years we have put a host of luxury cars through their paces. In 2015, to coincide with the launch of the latest James Bond movie Spectre, Northside’s Adam Kay was given the opportunity to live out his Bond fantasies behind the wheel of the latest Aston Martin, the DB9 GT model. Our reporter was also treated to a viewing of one of Bond’s most iconic cars, the Aston Martin DB10, and a chat with Bond stunt driver Mark Higgins.

A magazine for young city dwellers in Sheffield. The latest trends, hotspots and events have always been a mainstay of City. The Hipster pages keep readers up to date on new additions to the city’s bar, restaurant, music, arts and fashion scenes. City has featured some of the biggest names in popular culture since its inception. In the first year alone the magazine spoke to hairdresser Nicky Clarke, chef Raymond Blanc and actor Christopher Eccleston. Ian Brown, Tinie Tempah, Duffy, Joan Rivers and Ellie Goulding have all graced the pages of City; more recently the magazine spoke to pop superstar Meghan Trainor. Sheffield’s annual inner city music festival Tramlines has taken up a residency in City; the magazine has stood at the festival’s side as it’s grown in both popularity and size since it began in 2009. City features illustrations as its cover, often by local artists. April 2016 issue featured a design from renowned Sheffield artist Pete McKee ahead of his hugely popular Six Weeks to Eternity exhibition at Magna Science Adventure Centre, whilst other editions have featured work from local illustrators including Tom J Newell, Faunagraphic and Grace Louise Taylor. >

RMC: A TIMELINE

June 2002 Image Image was launched in June 2002 as a new voice for the Sheffield area surrounding Crystal Peaks, Mosborough and Handsworth. In our first year we interviewed Trisha Cooper. A popular voice on our radios at the time, Eckington based Trisha co-hosted the BBC Sheffield breakfast show and then went on to produce radio all over Yorkshire. In the same issue we spoke to rock and roll legend Dave Berry. In 2012 we caught up with Dave again, after what he described as the “the best ten years of my career” and he was still playing music too, performing around the world but for relaxation he was selling antiques in Sheffield. Image often champions promising local musicians and The Mosborough Music Festival has been a summer highlight since it began in 2010. Image has had a long and harmonious relationship with Crystal Peaks, producing shopping guides at important times of the year such as Valentine’s and Christmas. Crystal Peaks celebrated its 25-year anniversary with us in 2013, and in 2014 we featured the centre’s famous bees who have set up home on the roof. Our reporter met the couple who take care of the hundreds of thousands of honey makers buzzing around the roof of one of Imageland’s biggest landmarks.

March 2003 Southside Southside launched in March 2003 and has been a household name in Chesterfield, Dronfield and surroundings areas since. In 2004 we focused on the historic Flagg Races, the UK’s only remaining horse race meeting to feature a cross-country race on natural hunting ground. The Chatsworth International Horse Trials are also a Southside regular and the world renowned equestrian event fills the magazine’s pages with previews of dressage, cross country races and show jumping each summer. Southside has featured some of the area’s most talented sportsmen before they’ve made the bigtime; in 2004 we featured 12-year-old golf whizz Scott Campbell who told us his dreams of one day becoming a professional. Today Scott has accomplished his dream and travels the world playing the sport he loves. Chesterfield FC’s star striker Jack Lester was interviewed ahead of his team’s 2-0 victory over Swindon at Wembley in 2012. Chesterfield won the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy that year. Southside featured the Spireites later on in 2012 but this time it was because their home ground was being taken over by the rocket man himself, Elton John. The megastar played to a sell-out crowd at the then B2net stadium in his first and only gig in Chesterfield to date.

PULSE AT THE HEART OF YOUR COMMUNITY

AUGUST 2013 Issue 6

Pulse was launched in 2013 and went straight to the heart of the Chapeltown and Ecclesfield community, where it has remained ever since. In its first issue Pulse featured the Chapeltown Forum. The official aim of the group was to champion the needs of the Chapeltown area and in talking about the group in the magazine, Pulse supported and promoted a great community cause, setting a trend that has continued through the magazine to the present. Later in 2013 the magazine featured the Grenoside Reading

8

Room, and spoke to the group of volunteers who took the building on when it was handed to the community. They transformed it into a heritage centre which has grown to become a hub of the community today. In 2015 Pulse met the volunteers who saved Eccesfield Library and managed to protect the library’s future after the council were forced to make cuts to the service. Alongside charitable community causes and events, Pulse has featured some of the area’s most interesting characters, including: entrepreneurs, such as Nose Warmer inventor Sally

Steel-Jones who featured in 2013; creative types, such as the Capelle Floral Art Society in 2015 and treasure-hunting gold panner Peter Sampson, who featured in Pulse’s June issue. Pulse’s sports champions have not been overlooked. We spoke to Betty Codona, the lady responsible for putting women’s basketball on the map in 2014, in 2015 the spotlight was on four lady golfers from Sheffield and Barnsley who were taking on the Longest Day Golf Challenge for Macmillan Cancer Support.

WWW.SHEFFIELDVIBE.CO.UK ‘Shouting about Sheffield’ is the tagline of RMC Media’s brand new lifestyle website, VIBE. Updated daily, and with a strong presence on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram, VIBE offers an up-to-theminute picture of life in the heart of the city. From interviews with the people behind the events, exhibitions, festivals and businesses that make the city tick to event previews to restaurant reviews – and lots more – it is the go-to website for the people of Sheffield to find out what’s happening on their doorstep. The site revolves around three key areas. ‘Food & Drink’ features everything from new restaurant and bar openings to restaurant reviews and trends. ‘Watch, Listen, Do’ is the cultural and creative section, covering previews and reviews of all the great things to do in the city and beyond. ‘Movers & Makers’ profiles the people who make the city such a vibrant place to live, work and study. With guest bloggers and local contributors on board, we have also opened up the portal to others, providing a platform for the city’s creative talent to shout about their passions and skills. With nine monthly lifestyle magazines, special publications, a thriving book division, two hugely successful restaurant awards and sought-after competitions already under our belt – not to mention the dedicated team of staff bringing this all together – we are in the best possible position to deliver something we think Sheffield really needs. @VIBE_Sheffield We also welcome ideas and inspirations from across the city. If there’s something you think VIBE should be covering, let our digital editor Stephanie Burns know on facebook.com/VIBE-Sheffield stephanie.burns@rmcmedia.co.uk. In the meantime, check out the new site and let us know what you think by Instagram.com/vibesheffield tweeting @VIBE_Sheffield or finding us on Facebook and Instagram.

30 HAPPY RETURNS

Chris Wilson with Jo Hercberg

Giving something back AS PART OF OUR 30TH CELEBRATIONS, STAFF AT RMC MEDIA WILL BE VOLUNTEERING THEIR SERVICES FOR MANY LOCAL GOOD CAUSES OVER THE COMING YEAR. THE FIRST TO STEP UP IS MANAGING EDITOR CHRIS WILSON. ere at RMC Media we’ve always tried to do our bit to make the world a better place, raising money for national and local good causes through cake sales, quizzes and charity days... and we will always continue to do so. But to celebrate our 30th year in business, we are also looking to do something a little different. This time, rather than shaking the charity tin and asking others to contribute, we’ll be getting stuck in and making our own practical contribution to the many good local causes that are close to our hearts. 30 Happy Returns is RMC Media’s modest way of putting something back into our community. As individuals and collectively, we will be going out and about over the next year, doing anything from litter picking to volunteering in animal shelters. We’ll return to this story regularly over the coming months and you can see how we get on, both in the magazines and on our website. You may spot us out and about in the community – we’ll be wearing the rather snazzy t-shirts worn by managing editor Chris Wilson (see above). Meanwhile, to get the ball rolling, Chris spent some time volunteering at a new cafe that takes a unique approach to sourcing ingredients.

H

The Real Junk Food Project, Sheffield So how do I find myself wiping down tables and chopping vegetables in a café where people are invited to ‘pay what they feel’ for their meal? It starts with the fact that 15 million tonnes of food is ditched in the UK every year. That’s three wheelie bins of food per person, making us the most wasteful nation in the EU. Food for thought – especially when, like me, you are fortunate enough to have a job that involves quite a lot of eating out in rather nice restaurants across Yorkshire and North Derbyshire. I first became aware of The Real Junk Food Project, Sheffield last summer when a friend told me she had spent the day after Tramlines, a weekend music festival in Sheffield, helping out in a pop-up restaurant where the main ingredients consisted of food left over after the bands moved on and the fans went home. The food was not past its sell-by date or contaminated in any way, but after events like this, the simplest thing for the vendors was simply to dump it and move on to the next event. Most of it was destined to end up in a landfill site. A small band of volunteer chefs, kitchen hands, pot washers and general helpers was trying to do something about this. Diners could pay what they could afford, or what they thought the meal was worth. Those who believed in the cause and could afford it might decide to pay more; those with empty pockets could volunteer, washing dishes in return for food. It turned out this pop-up restaurant was far from a one-off but part of a movement that began when Leeds-born chef Adam Smith found himself working on a farm in Australia where he witnessed the vast scale of food waste, in

agriculture and the catering industry. He came home and set up a café in Armley, Leeds, in 2013. There are now 95 across the country, staffed by volunteers cooking food that would otherwise go to waste, donated by local businesses, supermarkets, catering events, local households, food banks, farms and wholesalers. The Real Junk Food Project, Sheffield is now a year old and has grown from pop-up events to having its own café, at Regather Works on Club Garden Road, very close to London Road’s bustling array of restaurants, pubs and shops. Project director Jo Hercberg spent a decade in the online travel industry before deciding to leave the corporate world and do something she really believed in. The café is staffed by volunteers whilst food comes from local businesses, supermarkets, catering events, local households, food banks, farms and wholesalers. “Hopefully there will be pay-as-you-feel cafés all over the country soon,” says Jo. “But if the message spreads, and people start to think and act more about food waste, there will come a time when they close down because they won’t be needed.” As for my own small contribution, a morning spent wiping down and setting tables, putting the chalk boards outside and making a salad to go with the lunchtime quiches that Jo had cooked the previous day, was rewarding, and fun too. The Real Junk Food Project, Sheffield’s café is at Regather Works (57-59 Club Garden Road, Sheffield, S11 8BU). Open Thursday and Friday, 11am-8pm and Sunday 11am-3pm. realjunkfoodsheffield.com

TESTIMONIALS

Success stories “As a director in Sheffield’s charity sector for many years I look to Westside and FFB to keep me in the picture. I need to know what is happening and, more important, who is making it happen! The magazines always have a finger on the pulse of the corporate, political and social scene, giving an honest and unbiased opinion. Over many years as a director at Whirlow Hall Farm, Freeman College and The Lyceum Theatre Trust, I have benefitted from their support of our fundraising campaigns and of the Sheffield charitable sector in general. They are a great team and long may their great work continue.“ David Heugh. Chairman, THE LYCEUM THEATRE TRUST

“RMC Media is a great supporter of local businesses and Bradfield Brewery has benefited from this support. The Sixer magazine in particular has supported our business not just with advertising but with editorial features and joint projects. We like to show solidarity within the local business sector and RMC Media provides an ideal platform for us to sit alongside other local businesses and encourages consumers to shop local.” Lisa Moat, BRADFIELD BREWERY

“We have advertised with Northside for a few years now and have received two editorials written by Phoebe Seymour. The way Phoebe has captured the work we do with vulnerable people and how she has described what we are trying to do here has been wonderful. We have seen a direct correlation to the distribution of the magazine and footfall increasing. The placement of the magazine has also proved successful with customers visiting after receiving it at home, as well as finding it in business locations such as private hospitals. ” Buffy Parkinson, CARING FOR LIFE

“The Crown Hotel has advertised with Eastside since the very beginning. Being ‘the’ social magazine of the local area to Bawtry, it has always been important for the Crown to have a consistent message within the magazine – this usually comprising of a DPS each month plus the social side of what’s been happening at the Crown and in Bawtry. A big part of this also has been the Visit Bawtry supplement, which appears quarterly. Stephanie Burns has been our contact for editorial and has always been extremely professional, prompt and articulate. She just ‘gets us’. Writing about the Crown each month, Stephanie has a total feel for all things Crown. She knows who we are and what we are about. She is almost part of the team! Once the pieces are written, we are then handed over to Terri for design and it always results in a great, readable DPS. We send Terri what’s been happening at the Crown – balls, dinners, wedding events, new restaurant menus and racing, to name just a few of the many goings on. We have also been extremely honoured to have started and hosted the Eastside Restaurant Awards with Terri and the team. Each year the event grows and grows and is one of the biggest nights in the area for all eateries and restaurants. To sum up, Eastside magazine hits our target markets and enables us to promote weddings, the restaurant, the bar and any events we have going on at the hotel. It works, and this is why we have been a loyal customer every month for years. So happy 30th, team Eastside, from the team at the Crown Hotel Bawtry!” THE CROWN HOTEL, Bawtry

“Westside are a great company to deal with. Leah in particular couldn’t be more helpful and understands what her clients are trying to achieve in their advertising.” Jennifer Beal, sales manager, ELR LETTINGS

“Passion… commitment… energy… Come on Sheffield! Thank you to Mel and the team on behalf of everyone at Atkinsons for your continued support. We’re all in this together.” David Cartwright, store manager, ATKINSONS

“We have been advertising in Image magazine for several years now, on a monthly basis. Claire is very accommodating and always produces accurate work from any copy we send over, nothing is too much trouble and we are very pleased with the prompt service. Advertising in the Image certainly works for us.” Mandy Tyler, sales, marketing and events manager, SITWELL ARMS

“We have been advertising in Image for some time now and find that it is great brand awareness for us as a company, a good talking point in our appointments and a great platform to showcase our efforts in the community. Steph has been assisting me with the editorial pages we run in the magazine monthly and my column ‘ask the expert’. She always has a very forward-thinking and enthusiastic approach to our page and I am always excited to hear and see her ideas and outcome. To say I am pleased every month would be an understatement. I feel that Steph is valued asset to the RMC Media and it is a pleasure dealing with her.” Samuel Reaney, branch manager of HAYBROOK CRYSTAL PEAKS

“On behalf of myself and the management group I would like to take the opportunity to say a great big thank you for your hard work at First For Business magazine. We are delighted with all the work you have accomplished, and in particular Charles for his patience working with the brand colour scheme to develop the folders etc. We look forward to a long working relationship, it is a pleasure to work with professionals who are also nice people. It has been a particularly challenging workload for us in this past few weeks and your help has been invaluable.” Beryl Henshaw, managing director, B&E TOGETHER LTD.

BRADFIELD PARISH COUNCIL’S ANNUAL REPORT 2015-2016 IN ASSOCIATION WITH SIXER

Photographs courtesy of David Palmer, groundsman

REPORT BY THE CHAIRMAN The new Chair of Bradfield Parish Council is Cllr Vickie Priestley. She is continuing for a second term. n 2015 the Council welcomed seven new members to Bradfield Parish for a four-year term. This has given the Council a different perspective on issues in the Parish and has also given new Councillors a different view of the Parish. Throughout the year we have given grants to many community groups to help pay for projects within their area. I know the grant monies are always welcomed by the groups who continually struggle to find funding sources. Local schools have visited the Council Offices to hold their own School Council meetings. I know from personal experience how much the children enjoy having the opportunity to sit at the table and having their own chair person wear the Councils’ Chairs Chain. Photographs from some of these meetings have been posted on our Facebook page which is also a new feature enabling the Parish Council to engage more of our parishioners. I was very privileged to open Stannington Gala this year, it was a lovely sunny day and as always was very well attended. I also opened Worrall Gala on a sunny day, we seemed to have done well for the weather this year and the good weather always brings out the crowds. I baked cakes for the cake stall for Worrall gala and spent most of the day helping on the barbecue. Low Bradfield saw the arrival of a mobile signal for Vodafone customers. The project was first started when Cllr Southwood was the Chairman of the Council. MP Nick Clegg was instrumental in supporting the project, which is a community-led initiative to provide 3G connectivity and mobile internet access to not-spots in rural areas, and has now been implemented in Low Bradfield. The Council have been battling for a long time to improve connectivity in the area and first applied to take part in the 2012 project.

I

Although we weren’t chosen for the trial project, another opportunity arose in 2014 to be part of the full project, and this time we were successful. Vodafone has now installed a sure signal box at The Plough Inn on New Road, Flask End Post Office/Cafe at the bottom of Woodfall Lane and the Old Horns at the top of Woodfall Lane in High Bradfield. The three sites chosen for the boxes should ensure that the majority of the area is covered and anyone who is a Vodafone customer should now be able to make and receive calls and texts in these buildings or within approximately 500 meters of them. We are extremely grateful to The Plough, the Old Horns and Flask End for allowing the apparatus to be located on their buildings. It is hoped that other companies will follow suit in this advancement in technology, allowing better access for more people. The Parish Council has run a successful apprenticeship scheme for several years with apprentices gaining full time employment within other employers after the end of their time with the Parish Council. We hope to take on a new horticultural apprentice in the summer. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Councillors for their commitment to the Parish throughout the year and also to thank staff for their help and assistance this year. FINANCE & STAFFING COMMITTEE Councillor Karen Southwood Chair of Finance and Staffing Bradfield Parish Council continues to maintain its service to the community within the budget set for the year. I would like to thank the finance officer and all the staff for their excellent work during the past year. Annual accounts are subject to a full internal audit carried out by an independent, fully qualified auditor before being submitted for external audit and can be viewed through our website or at the Council office. Bradfield Parish Council is funded by the local residents of Bradfield Parish and last year we assisted community organisations for the benefit of local residents through our grants budget. Bradfield Parish Council continues to be committed to providing this assistance and

support to promote community life in the new financial year. The Council continues its working partnerships with Action for Stannington and Steel Valley Project and are currently looking at a partnership with the NW Sheffield Moorland Fringe Project. The Parish Council operates and maintains a number of buildings and facilities throughout the Parish, for example: • Coronation Park, Dungworth Park and Pavilion, Sensicall Park, Birkswood Bank, Kaye Meadows Allotments. • Birtin Cemetery and Garden of Remembrance. • Grade 2 Listed Council Offices at Low Bradfield. • Low Bradfield public toilets. • Several bus shelters. • Vehicles and equipment. • Numerous wayside seats, noticeboards and stone boundary signs.

PLANNING COMMITTEE Councillor Peter Butler Chair of the Planning Committee As the Planning Committee, we look at all the plans within the Parish Boundary, which have been sent to Sheffield City Council for approval, and give our opinion on them. We also look at plans which have been submitted to Peak Park and attend PDNPA

meetings regarding planning matters. We listen to parishioners who wish to make comments on the plans. We are able to give advice on which comments are appropriate as planning issues, and which are not (for example the fact that a new build may devalue your house, will not be considered by Sheffield Planning Officers) and we attempt to help all parishioners. If requested, we may do a site visit, if we feel we need more information.

Coronation Park

LAND & PREMISES COMMITTEE Councillor Victoria Talbot Chair of Land and Premises The Parish of Bradfield has had a very successful year during 201516. The year welcomed seven new councillors to the Parish Council. With the support and experience of Teresa and Pam we have continued to provide a valuable, open and transparent service to the Parish. I am sure you will agree that the parks have been maintained beautifully and special thanks must go to the ground staff for their continued hard work and wealth of knowledge over such a large area. Many visitors to Low Bradfield will be pleased to find that the village toilets continue to remain open. Praise must also be noted to the upkeep of the Parish cemeteries. We received feedback from one parishioner who has recognised this and commented that “Birtin Cemetery is the best kept cemetery and has been for a long time. As our Chair has already mentioned, Bradfield Parish must also be recognised as the first Yorkshire community to benefit from and receive reliable 3G mobile phone coverage, thanks to the Rural Open Sure Signal programme that aims to boost phone signals over the Vodafone network. The staff and councillors continue to work hard for the Parish of Bradfield and are looking forward to working with the parishioners in the year ahead.

SIXEREATING OUT

With food as tasty, tempting and healthy as this, it’s no surprise that The Schoolrooms is a popular dining destination. Words and photography: Stephanie Burns

SALAD DAYS hen you hear the words ‘this is by far one of the best salads I have ever had’ being spoken by your most health-conscious friend, you know the establishment you’re dining in must be good. The salad in question was from The Schoolrooms’ healthy new menu and comprised a mouth-watering concoction of pickled beetroot, rocket, goats cheese, Granny Smith, walnut, crisp Parma ham and fresh fig. The vibrant dish looked as pretty as a picture and, if Fiona’s bold statement was anything to go by, tasted even better. I, too, had selected from the menu’s new lighter offerings. The Nicoise salad was a step above any version I’d come across before, with seared fresh tuna steak coated in sesame seeds joined by soft-boiled egg, al dente green beans, new potatoes, juicy cherry tomatoes, olives and baby gem lettuce. You couldn’t wish for a fresher, more inviting dish. We’d been surprised upon our arrival just before 12.30pm that we had our pick of the seats in the nearempty café. By 12.35pm, however, almost every table was occupied

with the bustling lunchtime crowd. Looking round, others were following our healthy lead – the Mediterranean superfood salad (couscous, pomegranate and pumpkin seeds, feta, peppers, coriander, mint, broccoli and citrus dressing, £7) drawing our attention away from our own table for just a second. Of course, for those who prefer a heartier meal, the café’s wellloved favourites still remain. I have a feeling there’d be an uproar if the butchery burger Pickled beet salad, £7 (£8), the Bradfield Brewery beer- Nicoise salad, £8 battered haddock (£9) or the beautiful fat chips that Gluten-free tea loaf, £2.50 accompany them were ever Lemon drizzle cake, £2.25 side-lined. For dessert, though very Still mineral water, £2 tempted by the thought of the Americano, £2 Peak District mess (Peak District Earl Grey, £2.50 raspberry ripple ice cream with The Schoolrooms crushed meringue and berries, Mill Lee Road, Low Bradfield, £4), we couldn’t resist the cake Sheffield S6 6LB counter, which, as always, was Tel: 0114 285 1920 www.theschoolrooms.co.uk loaded with all sorts of tasty treats. Fiona made a beeline for the lemon drizzle cake and delighted in its moist sponge, lemon curd filling and zesty icing. I chose a gluten-free version of a childhood favourite – delicious tea loaf bursting with juicy fruit. No visit to The Schoolrooms is complete without a poke around the deli downstairs. After lunch, we took great pleasure in exploring the shelves, counters and fridges that groan with predominantly local fare. The homeware ranges also caught our eye – the wooden accessories crafted by hand, cute baskets and handmade cosmetics are a lovely addition to this slice of foodie heaven. Whether you fancy a light and healthy lunch or a luxurious blow-out, The Schoolrooms can teach you a lesson or two in how to indulge any appetite.

Their cohesive team of staff are qualified, experienced professionals with the skills and sensitivity necessary to promote children’s free expression and individuality. At Lilypad, they make the most of some of the best natural surroundings in Sheffield. They go exploring on nature walks using magnifying glasses, tape measures, tweezers and bug pots. Corner House Nursery

Bradfield Dungworth

Corner House Nursery has been a family run business for 22 years and believes in providing children with the best start in life by giving them lots of exciting and challenging play experiences. They proudly achieved ‘outstanding’ in their July 2014 OFSTED inspection. With such a high standard of care, it is little wonder so many families choose the nursery to provide a nurturing environment for their little ones. The Victorian building is set in a third of an acre of land and offers four outdoor play areas, including an adventure playground and a nature garden. They also have three onsite cooks who provide healthy, homecooked meals. Children can stay for as little as half a day, to as much as a full week, with a flexible package of care to fit working parents.

Bradfield Dungworth Primary School is a small school with big ambitions for its pupils. The school has a family atmosphere and works closely with parents to create a positive learning environment. They tailor their teaching methods to suit the needs of each child and had excellent feedback in their latest OFSTED report. The inspector said: “The children are exceptionally friendly, polite, and caring”, “They love coming to school and are very proud of it” and that “Teachers motivate pupils by giving stimulating tasks and creating a supportive climate for learning.” The school has four classrooms, a hall and an adventure playground. They provide a curriculum which is both interesting and imaginative. They also have a variety of after-school clubs including RuggerEds, drama and singing.

PROMOTIONCOUMES SPRING CHILDREN’S CENTRE

How times have changed at Coumes Spring Children’s Centre... amilies celebrated 20 years of Coumes Spring Children’s Centre in June with a special open day and party at Worrall Memorial Hall. The centre started with three staff and 12 children in January 1996, and since then the amount of children attending Coumes Spring has almost trebled. To celebrate their anniversary the centre set up a noticeboard for families to share and display their memories and made a special anniversary book. On the day, party guests had a great time reminiscing about their time at the children’s centre. There was a bouncy castle, games and live music to keep everybody entertained, whilst a bar and gourmet burgers kept the adults refreshed in the evening. A raffle was held to raise money for The British Heart Foundation, with the winner walking away with a family pass for Wigfield Farm. Technology has developed at Coumes Spring over the years too. PROMOTIONKALEIDOSCOPE

Keep your hair in the best possible condition with these top tips from Kaleidoscope. air stylist Gina Toulson has been the owner of Kaleidoscope on Middlewood Road for over 20 years. Here, she answers some of our most frequently asked hair care questions.

H

How can I reduce colour fade? Using the wrong products is the biggest contributor to colour fade. Make sure you always use salon recommended, pH-balanced shampoo. You should also avoid shampoos which contain sodium sulphate. A good colour-saving tip is to use a leave in conditioner such as Repair Rescue (£11.85) or Color Freeze (£10.55) by Schwarzkopf. Both are available from our salon. How can I reduce colour fade in red hair? Follow the tips above. A semi-permanent colour is also available from us to help brighten and refresh red hair between your usual visits. How can I maintain blonde hair? If you find your hair is too golden or yellow, a silver shampoo will put ashy tones back in, but only use this twice a week. You could also come to the salon for a toner (usually around £10) between normal appointments. What can I do to fight frizz? When you go on holiday, sun and chlorine can make your hair brittle and frizzy. To counteract this, visit us for an intense treatment. We use Schwarzkopf’s Repair Rescue deep nourishing treatment (£13.25). While you’re here, why not have a trim to maintain your style? What can I do to protect my hair from straighteners/curling tongs? Use a heat damage protection spray. Apply this to dry hair before using. How can I maintain a perm? After six to eight weeks, come back for a trim to put the bounce back into your curls. It will last much longer. Also, use products for curly hair such as a define curl or de-frizz serum.

My child hates having his/her hair cut. What can I do to change their mind? Book them in every five weeks. Not only will this thicken and strengthen their hair, it will also get them used to having their hair cut. They will be rewarded with a lolly! We also offer princess parties. Your daughter and her friends will get a full pamper package including a hair cut/style and nail painting, as well as lots of treats, in a decorated private room. Contact us for more details. Do you do hair for weddings? Yes – our stylist Paul will create something special and personal that will last all day. Contact us to book a free consultation. We also offer a make-up artist. What services do you offer for men? We have a good selection of services and products for men. Everyone is different. Some visit as often as once a week, whilst others wait up to four weeks. How do I choose the right stylist? A good stylist is someone who listens and gives you inspiration. They should be friendly, enthusiast, passionate about hair and able to recommend the right products and hair styles for you – how can you expect your style to look right, if you are not using the right products? Key tips: ? $8( $0 ,06(05( 64($6/(06 10&( $ 9((? 5( 6+( &144(&6 241'7&65 )14 ;17 $0' )1..19 6+( $'8,&( carefully ? 11- ;174 0(:6 $221,06/(06 $5 ;17 .($8( 6+( 5$.10 > you are more likely to stick with it ? !,5,6 75 (8(4; 5,: 61 (,*+6 9((-5 )14 $ 64,/ Kaleidoscope 192 Middlewood Road, Sheffield, S6 1TD Tel: 0114 234 3617

When disaster strikes, you can rely on Dean, PlumbRite’s expert on your doorstep, to come to the rescue. hen there’s a problem with your plumbing, the last thing you want is a delay in solving it. Due to the hands-on nature of the job, combined with the call centres associated with bigger companies, many plumbers are difficult to contact, leaving customers waiting around while the problem worsens. PlumbRite doesn’t have this problem, as every call is answered directly by plumbing engineer Dean Ellis. Previously a franchise, it has recently become an independent local business, solely run by owner Dean. This means you will benefit from a personal service with the same plumber helping you every step of the way, from your first enquiry through to completion. Based in Ecclesfield, Dean covers the whole S6 and S35 area, as well as Stocksbridge and Penistone. “I like being my own boss,” says Dean. “I’ve always worked very hard for someone else and a few years ago, I decided it was about time I started working hard for myself. As it’s my own business, I take a lot of pride in my work.” Dean is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week for emergency plumbing. He also tackles general plumbing issues, from a leaking tap to a whole drainage system. He can also design, supply and fit complete bathrooms, including the tiling. Most of the work Dean does is for domestic customers, but his diligent and efficient approach has resulted in him being the plumber of choice for many city centre restaurants, Meadowhall shopping centre, Pandora jewellers, Lexus Sheffield and many local churches. In addition to this, Dean is also Part P Electrically Qualified, so can also offer his extensive client base advice and assistance

on wiring issues. This month, PlumbRite celebrates its fifth year in business. Though much has changed since the business was established, Dean continues to take a vigilant approach when it comes to plumbing, putting the PlumbRite motto – Get it done rite! – into action. “I make sure I get it done right first time,” says Dean. “I don’t rush jobs – it’s important to dedicate the time necessary and to use all the correct parts.” One of the other plus points of recruiting Dean is that he is reliable and won’t ever keep you waiting. “I always turn up when I say I will,” adds Dean. “When you’ve got a problem as bad as water coming through your ceiling, the last thing you want is to have to wait extra time for someone to fix it.” If you want a local plumber you can rely on, try Dean Ellis of PlumbRite. As an independent plumber, he can ensure your problem is solved as quickly as possible. PlumbRite Tel: 07949 869348 Email: deano7125@hotmail.co.uk

BITS & PIECES Runners continue to raise money for Children’s Hospital

Loxley member joins Household Cavalry Mounted Band John Berry, former member of Loxley Silver Band, has been accepted into the Household Cavalry Mounted Band; the only mounted band in the Army. John is in the Blues and Royals. This regiment has the Freedom of the City Of London and the right to gallop in the Royal Parks with swords (or cornets) drawn. John took part in the Queen’s Birthday Parade and will be taking part in a lot of ceremonial work over the summer. He will be spending a month at The Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo in August. John said: “It was pretty tough on the riding course, from absolute novice to accomplished mounted duty man in 16 weeks, but I’m enjoying it now.”

Tales from a local tearoom Local writer, Corinne Lakin has written Tales of Rivelin Bridge Tearoom, inspired by her time as a post mistress and proprietor there. The book is available to buy from Nathan’s Craft & Tea Room, Stannington Road, Sheffield, S6 6AE.

Party fit for the Queen Knowle Top Chapel celebrated the Queen’s official birthday in style with a party in her honour. The venue was decorated with union jack flags and bunting whilst guests dressed up in red, white and blue to match. There was a royal quiz, a raffle and tea, coffee, sandwiches and cake were served. John Longstaff from the Stannington players led a singalong and gave a brief history of the Queen’s life from being a little girl to the present day, with a few items of historical note. Guests finished with Happy Birthday to her majesty.

Sixer has supported local runners Vicky Bridges and Samantha Patrick, who are using their passion for running to raise money for The Children’s Hospital Charity. After holding staff charity events, we were delighted to present the fundraisers with a cheque for £205.50. Their year of fundraising started in December with the Percy Pud 10k, followed by the Sheffield Half Marathon and Three Yorkshire Peaks Challenge in April. They are currently training for the National Peaks Challenge in September. Help Vicky and Samantha by donating raffle prizes and baking cakes for their next event or donate to their Just Giving page, www.justgiving.com/teams/spvb.

Fundraising golf day Visual Bathrooms recently took part in a fundraising golf tournament with their local club, Wisewood FC, by sponsoring the first hole of their match. Visual Bathrooms congratulated Nik Travis, Dan Horsfield, Dave Horsfield and Matt Shaw from the team as well as the other 13 teams involved. Together they managed to raise £1,800, which will go towards new drainage systems, kits and equipment at Wisewood FC. This is the third year the fundraising event has taken place and both Visual Bathrooms and Wisewood FC are looking forward to the same again next year.

Nook Lane netball team to represent South Yorkshire Good luck to Nook Lane Junior School’s Y6 High 5 Netball team, who are representing South Yorkshire in the regional EIS tournament. The team will be playing against North Yorkshire, West Yorkshire and Humberside on 18 July, after beating a number of other local squads to win the South Yorkshire School Games and go forward and represent the county. One of the member’s mums, Amanda Denton, said: “The squad have worked extremely hard to get this far training every week, sometimes twice a week. They deserve a lot of recognition, given they are not only the best in Sheffield, but in South Yorkshire.” Special thanks also go to Y6 teacher Mrs Katie Parkin, coach Caroline Graham and Friends of Nook Lane volunteer Donna Glover who have all helped and supported the team.

Welcome To My Office – Views from the roofs of Sheffield S6 Simon Slater of Slater’s Aerial Services has a different ‘office view’ to most of us – a rooftop vista of Sheffield. But can you guess exactly where in the S6 postcode area he was when he took these photographs? Congratulations to those of you who guessed where Simon was in last month’s pictures – Sheffield Town Hall.

Local author shares memories With summer in full swing, Barry Couldwell, author of Wiggy’s Wesher Man, shares his memories of what summer was like in days gone by. “Summertime always seemed to be fantastic weather. It never appeared to rain and we played out morning till night, no problems,” says Barry in the book. A summer “treat” were his family visits to Haighenfield, a large house on Kirk Edge Road, where children would take a picnic, buy a can of pop and play all day. Bilberrying was another common pastime during Barry’s childhood summers with many local families picking berries at Larch Hall. “Kids got fed up and ended up eating most of the berries, went home scratch-legged, face covered in bilberry juice and knackered but it was worth it when mi mam baked a bilberry pie.” The rest of Barry’s summer days were spent at Glen Howe Park, where he recalls Mr Cecil Brearley as park keeper. To read more of Barry’s memories of growing up in Sheffield in the 1940s and 50s find his book Wiggy’s Wesher Man in The Schoolrooms, Mill Lee Road, Low Bradfield, S6 6LB.

Wharncliffe pupils stay at Whirlow Hall Farm That time of year has come around again when the Year 2 pupils at Wharncliffe Side Primary School are waved off at the school gates as they head off on their first residential school trip. Many of the pupils’ parents will remember the trip from their own school days as it has now been running for nearly three decades. The class spent a night at Whirlow Hall Farm, a working farm spanning nearly 140 acres. During their two-day stay, they learnt about life on a farm, collected eggs, groomed ponies and small animals, went for walks, built dens, took part in some craft activities and had fun being outdoors with their friends. The first day was rounded off with story-telling, singing and eating marshmallows around a campfire.

Wednesday fans hit Wembley Chips Away owner Stuart Corbidge and friends had a great day at Wembley for the Championship play-offs between Hull City and Sheffield Wednesday despite the outcome. They bumped into Sixer credit controller Christine Pryor and her partner David Johnson, who also got to meet exWednesday player David Hirst. 93 SIXER MAGAZINE

SIXERTHEATRE

THE STAGE IS SET Unassuming from the outside but, thanks to generous grants and funding, the inside of the EPPiC Theatre is anything but. Stephanie Burns meets the theatre’s owners, the Ecclesfield Priory Players.

t first glance, you may be forgiven for assuming that the grand old building housing the EPPiC Theatre was not in use. Many of the parents who pass the theatre every day when taking their children to Ecclesfield Primary School, with which the theatre shares a path, don’t even realise it’s in operation. “This is partly because of where it’s situated, and because we have a derelict building in front of us,” explained secretary Carol Travis, who joined Ecclesfield Priory Players in 1976 and whose husband, Tom, is the group’s president. “You could go out and ask someone on the front street where the EPPiC Theatre is and they wouldn’t know. If you’re not looking for it, you don’t see it.” But behind this charmingly traditional – and, yes, perhaps slightly old-looking – exterior lies a great hive of activity and some sparkling new interiors. Thanks to generous grants from Church Burgess, Freshgate Foundation, Ecclesfield Parish Council, St Mary’s Lane Trust,

Ecclesfield Welfare Charities, Viridor, Foyle Foundation, Sports Aid and South Yorkshire Community Funding – as well as the players’ own fundraising – they’ve been able to upgrade the seating, some of the lighting and the scenery boards (known as ‘flats’). In total, the work has cost around £60,000 and included a lot of voluntary work by members and friends. The group bought the former Trinity Methodist Church – which they renamed EPPiC (Ecclesfield Priory Players in the Community) Theatre – in 1979 when it was derelict, and work began right away. Then-president Les Bell was the brains behind this transformation. “Les did all the negotiation with engineers and goodness knows

what to work out the plans and what we were going to do – I can’t tell you what a mammoth task it was,” said Carol. “It didn’t look at all like it does now. The pews were round on a balcony, the stage was at the other end from where it is now, and there was nothing downstairs apart from an old stove. We were really well supported by Ecclesfield village; we had help from the probation service with people doing community work, and one of the colleges did the plastering. There were a lot of young men who came and helped us ever such a lot with all the heavy stuff, all in their free time. It was a real community project.” The players still receive great support from the community, albeit in smaller numbers. Loyal season ticket holders come to every performance, and the patronage scheme enables those who enjoy the productions or who are no longer able to take part to show their support. Member Jean Long, who takes care of front of house and health and safety, as well as memberships and patronage, is particularly fond of the theatre regulars.“We have so many hilarious moments in the foyer as they’re coming in,” she laughed, “we could write a play just on that! It’s a lovely atmosphere.” It was this connection with the local community that sparked the beginning of the Priory Players in 1932. Reverend Norman Graham of Ecclesfield Church founded the group and named them after their rehearsal space – Ecclesfield Priory. But it wasn’t until much later that the players got their own building. Jean Dalby, who has been a member since 1967, remembers it well: “We rented this little chapel on Town End Road from the Ecclesfield Labour Party for £5 a

year. When we went in we realised why it was so cheap! It was an earthen floor and there were no windows. We all knuckled down and converted this room into the most beautiful headquarters.” Hiring spaces to put on the shows eventually became too expensive, so they began searching for a stage of their own. When the Methodist church came up for sale, they knew it would be the perfect location for the EPPiC Theatre. To this day, the group puts on three productions a year, in February, May and October. Their next show, Love is a Luxury – a farcical comedy set in the 1950s – runs from 11 to 15 October. Throughout the year, they welcome members and the public to the fundraising coffee mornings that take place every Saturday from 11am to midday, when they serve tea, coffee, homemade cakes and toasted teacakes. Live performances, poetry readings and bric-a-brac sales help to attract even more visitors. On the three Saturdays preceding the October play, and the morning of the 15th, a Grenoside-based art group will also be exhibiting their pictures. The Ecclesfield Priory Players aren’t the only group who put the theatre to good use, and hiring the building out is another way the players raise money to assist with everyday running costs. Local schools and other theatrical groups, such as High Green Musical Theatre Group, take full advantage of the unique setting. This month, 28 students, who have just finished Year 11 at Ecclesfield School, are performing at the theatre. The production – Whitale Marsh – is set in a fictional Yorkshire village and follows the lives of the residents as the village is torn apart by a tragic event. At the time this article went to print, almost all tickets had sold out. Carol and her fellow players are delighted to welcome the students each year. “The Ecclesfield School students do a big show in their own space, Lady Mabel Hall, but they come here because it gives them the intimate theatre experience so they usually do something that’s quite moving and dramatic. There is some amazing talent amongst those 16-year-olds. “It’s also good for us to link in with the local schools to try and raise the profile of the theatre. Our hope is also that some of the students will eventually come back to Ecclesfield having been to university and then become members here.” There are around 30 members at the moment, ranging from 16 years old to over 80. As well as acting roles, they take care of stage management, lighting, sound, set production and front of house – in fact, many of the members have never acted at all. One thing they all have in common is a passion for keeping the tradition of acting in Ecclesfield alive and well. Long may it continue.
