DO YOU REMEMBER?

Do you remember? teve Stones recently came across this old class photograph whilst having a clearout. It reminded him of many old friends and we are sure it will jog a few more memories. “I know there are still many of the people from the picture living in and around S6 and it would be good to hear what some of them are up to now, says Steve. So if you do recognise yourself, get in touch. Last month’s photo, supplied by Barry Couldwell, struck an immediate chord with Sixer reader Linda Cordwell. “I recognised it straight away, it is Laura and Richard Shaw of the Blue Ball Inn at Worrall, she says. “I worked there for 23 years; they were great to work for and were proper publicans. “I believe it was 1987 when they retired from the pub... very sad that they are no longer around. I was still in touch with them until their passing, firstly Richard and then Laura. The photo was supplied by Barry Couldwell.

The cross was funded by a disabled member who wanted to serve The Lord but was frustrated by his incapacity. Over the years we have received many comments. One man said: “I cum out of mi pub and I ‘aven’t a clue which way to go, so I look for thi cross and know mi way ‘home! An amusing comment which contains a deeper truth. The Bible teaches that we are created by God in His image and will not find true peace or meaning in life until we return to Him. The cross of Jesus stands as a symbol calling all mankind back into a relationship where love, forgiveness, peace and hope can be found!

BRADFIELD PARISH COUNCIL’S ANNUAL REPORT 2016-2017 IN ASSOCIATION WITH SIXER

Cllr. Vickie Priestley (pictured left) is the outgoing chairman of Bradfield Parish Council. She will be replaced by Cllr. Victoria Talbot (right)

REPORT BY THE CHAIRMAN Chairman Councillor Vickie Priestley. s I come to the end of being chair of the Parish for two years, it’s time to reflect on the highlights and achievements. We host school councils where all the primary schools in the Parish take part and select a chairperson who wears a chain of office and controls the meeting. The children have a lovely time and believe me they ask me some really important questions. We also had a visit from the families of the school council for the first time this year, which was very well attended, not only by the children, but their parents and teachers too. On that occasion, we had a question and answer session before they held their meeting. I thoroughly enjoyed all their questions and there was a lot of laughter. We successfully continued to run the Christmas card competition, with more entries than the previous year, which meant the Councillors had a difficult job in choosing the winner. I am sure all the schools enjoyed the challenge and of course, the winner had the honour of switching on the Christmas lights. We also awarded book tokens to each participating school. As a Council, we work closely with several organisations within the Parish, Steel Valley Project being one of them. Steel Valley have done extensive work in Sensicall Park over the last few months, as well as setting up a much needed management plan for Birkswood Bank. We also support Action for Stannington – many of you know what a fantastic amount of work Danny and his team do within the Parish – and continue to support other groups in the Parish with grants too. We would also welcome any new groups.

A

The Parish Council also formed a partnership with the Sheffield Wildlife Trust, who have been successful in obtaining £2.8million Heritage Lottery funding for the Sheffield Lakeland Landscape Partnership Project and have had several meetings with Sheffield City Council in relation to Flood Protection Proposals and the large scale housing developments in Oughtibridge. Many of which is ongoing. Last year we also sold the Smithy in Midhopestones and consulted with the residents regarding what they would like us to do to help improve their area. This work is ongoing. 2016 also saw the Parish Council enter the world of social media and launch its Facebook page, which is proving to be an excellent communication tool, and the continuation of another successful groundsman apprenticeship scheme, which started around five years ago. I would like to pass on my thanks to all the Councillors for their time and commitment to this Council and to our grounds staff for keeping the Parish looking at its best. I would also like to thank Pam, one of our caretakers, for looking after us and extend a very big thank you to Teresa and Pam for all their hard work over the past year. Finally, this just leaves me to say that the Parish Council thoroughly enjoyed seeing the Tour de Yorkshire pass through Midhopestones on the 30 April as well as the Sportive passing through Wharncliffe Side, Worrall, Oughtibridge and High Bradfield.

FINANCE COMMITTEE Councillor Southwood, Chair of Finance and Staffing. I would like to thank the finance officer and all the staff for their excellent work during the past year. Bradfield Parish Council continues to maintain its service to the community within the budget set for the year. Annual accounts are subject to a full internal audit carried out by an independent, fullyqualified auditor before being submitted for external audit and can be viewed through our website or at the Council office. Bradfield Parish Council is funded by the local residents of Bradfield Parish and last year we assisted community organisations, for the benefit of local residents, through our Grants Budget. Bradfield Parish Council continues to be committed to providing this assistance and support to promote community life in the new financial year. The Council continues its working partnerships with Action for

PLANNING COMMITTEE Councillor P. Butler, Chair of the Planning Committee. We regularly look at the plans which have been submitted to the Sheffield Planning Office and give our opinion, as well as help local parishioners put forward their comments to Sheffield Planning Officers. Plans are also received from PDNPA for consideration and Councillors attend meetings held by the PDNPA, who are a very knowledgeable body. Parish Councillors try to help parishioners put forward comments to the planning authorities, for example, a comment that a new build may devalue your home would not be a planning consideration for the authorities. Parish Councillors will also carry out site visits if requested by parishioners.

Stannington and Steel Valley Project and have recently entered into a working partnership with Oughtibridge Gala Events and Donations Charity. The Council is also currently contributing to the Sheffield Lakeland Landscape Partnership Project. The Parish Council operates and maintains a number of buildings and facilities throughout the Parish, for example: • Coronation Park, Dungworth Park and Pavilion, Sensicall Park, Birkswood Bank, Kaye Meadows Allotments • Birtin Cemetery and Garden of Remembrance • Grade 2 Listed Council Offices at Low Bradfield • Low Bradfield public toilets • Several bus shelters • Vehicles and equipment • Numerous wayside seats, notice boards and stone boundary signs The total spent on grants in this financial year is £9,482.

LAND & PREMISES COMMITTEE Councillor Trevor Bagshaw, Chair of Land and Premises. The Land and Premises Committee has met regularly throughout the year and on behalf of all the committee members and our parishioners I would like to express our thanks to our Clerk and to all our staff for their hard work during the last year. Their work has ensured the continued health and wellbeing of the Parish’s land and premises assets: Coronation Park, Oughtibridge Millennium Green, Birtin Cemetery and the Pavilion and Sports Field at Dungworth, which, together with the picnic area at Low Bradfield, have all continued to shine like the jewels they are, for the benefit and enjoyment of residents and visitors alike. In August 2016, together with our Clerk, Vice Chairman Councillor Habeshaw and I visited all the premises and sites owned, leased and cared for by the Parish Council. All continue to be in good order and the Council has made appropriate provision for their ongoing maintenance and where necessary additional improvements. In the autumn of 2015 the Council, via the Land and Premises Committee, commissioned The Steel Valley Partnership, to consult local people and prepare a management plan for the Birkswood Bank in Oughtibridge. Many local people contributed to the evaluation and early this year we were pleased to receive and endorse a plan which will, in future years, see improvements to the woodland, with the introduction of more native tree species and clearing and encouraging more flora and fauna in open glades, as well as providing community information on the environment and habitat there. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the various Friends Groups who work with the Parish Council to enhance and promote their special places. The Friends of Coronation Park have made very significant and particular contributions to the park and to people’s enjoyment of it, including contributions to the possible impact of proposed local development on the park. I would note their reports to our Council on issues about housing developments, on the Sheffield City Council’s Flood protection proposals and latterly, their continuing dialogue with the committee on possible future tree planting and enhancements to the park. In similar vein I am pleased to report that the Oughtibridge Allotment Society, which leases Kaye Meadows in Oughtibridge, continue to be very successful with all the plots being rented and worked. During the year the committee has engaged with a number of important external developments which could impact on the Parish. We received a presentation from officers from Sheffield City Council on the Council’s city wide proposals for flood protection measures. Subsequently, the Parish Council contributed its views to the consultation process and successfully argued, alongside many parishioners, that Coronation Park should not be designated a temporary flood storage area. We remain concerned that the final proposals do address high flood risk areas like Waterside Gardens, but also recognise and protect heritage assets in the Don and Loxley valleys, which are

Birkswood Bank

important areas of high recreation value and the city’s history. The committee has invited SCC officers to return and discuss with us their revised proposals and we wish to have a continuing engagement with the project. More long term, but of equal concern to the Council, is the investigation by a major chemical company to explore for natural gas, for which they hold HM Government licences in the East Midlands and South Yorkshire. This is not an immediate issue for the Council but we are monitoring developments closely. The committee also received a presentation from the Police Commissioner for South Yorkshire about his work and were able to question him closely about policing and resources available to cover communities and businesses in our Parish. In 2016, the Council joined in partnership with Sheffield and Rotherham Wildlife Trust, Sheffield City Council, Yorkshire Water and others to bid for a grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund for a landscape project. In November, we were advised that the bid had been successful and some of the £2.8million is being ring fenced whilst we now prepare a delivery plan. We expect the Sheffield Lakes Landscape Project, which covers much of the parish, to engage with our residents, communities and businesses and to see much of the grant sum invested in the area over the next five years, to the long term benefit of the environment and the economy of the parish and the surrounding area. Finally, I am pleased that this year the Tour de Yorkshire sped along some of the rural roads in the north-west corner of the parish. Again, like the Grand Depart of the Tour de France, it provided enjoyment and recreation for many residents and visitors. Once again, may I thank my colleagues for their support during the year as well as our Clerk, staff and the many residents who in various ways have also contributed to the work of the committee in managing, promoting and enhancing the assets of Bradfield Parish Council.

FINANCIAL REPORT 2016/2017 The Parish Council approved expenditure for the financial year 2016/17 of £215,014.

Christmas card competition

The Council’s expenditure relates to services carried out in the area, enhancing the work of Sheffield City Council and local community groups, maintenance of its assets, which include Council offices, Coronation Park, Birtin Cemetery, Low Bradfield public toilets, several stone built bus shelters, vehicles and equipment, and numerous wayside seats and noticeboards, and provision of illuminated Christmas trees throughout the Parish. An amount is also set aside each year for grants to local organisations. A full list of successful grant applications can be obtained from the Parish Council offices or from the Council website. The precept collected from the local taxpayers amounted to £233,616. The balance was met from reserves, income from Birtin Cemetery, rental income, the sale of an asset and other miscellaneous income. The Council’s accounts are subject to internal and external audit. The internal and external audit will be undertaken in July 2017 and will be made available to the public during July 2017. The final audit report will be displayed after completion of the external audit. For the current year 2017/18 budgeted expenditure amounts to £282,858 with a precept of £238,109.

NADIM KHAN, OWNER OF THE FRONT ROOM, IS NOT RESTING ON HIS LAURELS, DESPITE WINNING ‘BEST NEWCOMER’ AT THIS YEAR’S WESTSIDE RESTAURANT OF THE YEAR AWARDS. PHOEBE SEYMOUR FINDS OUT ABOUT HIS PLANS FOR THE FUTURE.

L-R: Paul Robinson (Robinsons Brewery), Nadim Khan, his uncle and chef Shokat Arshad, compere Howard Middleton

Spicy ambition “

ood should have a lot of passion in it. It’s not about the money. You have to love food. It’s about the way it looks. It should have energy!” Once you get Nadim Khan, owner and executive chef at The Front Room talking about Indian food, there’s no stopping him. Fresh ingredients are key and even as I sit talking to him at a pristine white clothed table, he is pouring me – not just water – but one infused with fresh mint leaves and lime wedges. Even his descriptions of their dishes is enough to make you salivate. “The texture, colour and flavour of each dish is different,” continues Nadim. “We make nine different sauces for dishes and six sauces for the pickle tray, all made in-house. We have mango and apricot, cherry tomato chilli and coriander, then we have the pineapple chutney, the red onion salad and then the normal onion salad. Then we make our own mint sauce with fresh mint and coriander.” The Front Room in Hillsborough is not your typical Indian restaurant. With a fivecourse taster menu, a fine dining setting and waiters in bowties, it’s nothing like your traditional British ‘curry house’. “The food we usually get in Sheffield isn’t Indian,” continues Nadim. “People aren’t used to it. They’re used to Bangladeshi and

F

Pakistani food from a one pot sauce system. We make the kinds of sauces that high-end restaurants do. You will not find another restaurant like this in Sheffield, but you will in London.” Nadim is originally from Brixton, London and moved to Sheffield 20 years ago with his grandparents. His family have a strong background in the food industry and own slaughter houses and butcher shops. He has learnt a lot from being in the kitchen with his grandmother, who at the grand age of 90, still enjoys cooking. Many of the chefs Nadim knows are London based and he was even once offered a job at The Cinnamon Club, the famous Indian fine dining restaurant in Westminster, but after 15 years of working in a number of Sheffield restaurants, he decided the time had come to bring something different to the Steel City rather than following the herd in London. “For me it’s about bringing Sheffield to life. I want to make a name for this city I was brought up in. People ask me, why did you come to Hillsborough? And my answer is, if the proof is in the pudding, you can go anywhere.” The Hillsborough restaurant has only been open since November 2015, but is already off to a flying start. This year, it won Best Newcomer when our sister magazine staged the 2017 Westside Restaurant of the Year Awards and Nadim is determined to keep the momentum going. “We are just launching a new basil chicken tikka – basil and fresh green chilli with our secret recipe. I’m working with a chef from India at the moment and he’s given me two of his speciality dishes including some old mogul dishes like nawabi khas – a type of kebab.” @SixerRMC

This comes from Lucknow, a town in India that’s very well-known for its kebabs, which is grilled on a smoke barbecue, rather than in a tandoor oven. “This will be our new venture,” says Nadim. “Lucknow-style kebabs.” And when it comes to desserts, Nadim confesses this is more his partner’s and uncle’s area of expertise. “My partner is a good pastry and dessert chef and my uncle is a good ice-cream maker so now we are putting some nice Indian icecreams on the menu such as pistachio kulfi. We’re going to be doing gulab jamun with brandy and chocolate sauce with ice-cream on top.” Nadim is keen for the restaurant to focus more on outside catering too. The Front Room is taking a stall at Stannington Carnival and is looking forward to getting involved in more fairs and events such as weddings and birthdays. If you think that all sounds ambitious, you should hear about Nadim’s personal career goals. “I’m going to college in September to learn other cuisines like British and Italian cooking. I’m going to study that for two years, then I’m going for MasterChef, where you are judged by very big food critics. It makes you or breaks you, but that’s the challenge. “I hope to be a Michelin star chef one day. I have a daughter at home and if I don’t make it, I’ll teach her everything I know.” Visit The Front Room at 481 Langsett Road, Sheffield S6 2LN. Call 0114 285 3439 to book a table. Slim yourself

HAPPY!

STEVE AND HELENA LELEW WERE AMAZED AT THE RESULTS AFTER THEY DECIDED TO LOSE WEIGHT WITH THE HELP OF ALEVERE THERAPY AT G&M HEALTHCARE. f you are looking to transform your life and lose weight rapidly, choose the Alevere Therapy. Trying to lose weight can be a slog, especially in the early days when carrying those extra pounds can make exercise all the more challenging. That’s why Steve and Helena Lelew decided to get a head start, with the Alevere Therapy at G&M Healthcare. Dr Grace and her team are on hand throughout the process, providing a friendly, supportive and professional service. “We’d lost weight in such a short space of time, and once we’d got down to our baseline weights it was easier to keep it up,” says Steve. “We now have much more energy and more motivation to exercise.” Steve had tried diets and slimming groups in the past, and even a similar weight loss treatment five years ago, but the weight had slowly crept back on. “I’m approaching 60 now and one thing

I

that really motivated me was a few years ago when I went to an event with my twin brother. He weighed a stone more than me and someone said, ‘Is that your older brother?’ It was then I realised that being heavier can make you look much older.” This time, Steve was more determined and committed than ever before. And doing the treatment and diet plan together with his wife, meant they were able to support each other to stay on track. “I didn’t like the idea of a gastric band, but I wanted something with quick results, that would keep the weight off long term.” “They do three things. First of all you have an ultrasound where they find and deal with those bits you can’t lose through exercise. Second, they use an LPG machine to give you a skin tightening treatment. They then give you vitamin supplements and instructions of what you can eat. “Our therapists Sarah and Leyanne have been really nice and helpful. They’ve been on

And it’s not just their appearances and attitude to fitness that have changed. It’s improved their general health too. “We feel more positive. Our cholesterols and blood pressures are both down, which is amazing!” Despite being more motivated than ever to keep the pounds off, Steve says he still gets to give into temptation from time to time. “When I’ve been low and started creeping down to the fridge, Helena will stop me. Although you can get away with the odd treat and bounce back.” Looking back over his whole weight loss journey, would Steve recommend Alevere to other people? “As long as you stay committed and fully embrace all of their advice, it’s well worthwhile. It’s nice to know that G&M do other treatments too, but neither of us want to go back to our old lifestyles now!”

the plan themselves and it was reassuring to have regular check-ups once a week. “We also saw Dr Grace at regular intervals, who was very thorough and informative about the programme. We had lots of tests and she explained why each stage of the diet was important.” The whole process took 12 weeks, in which time, Steve had lost 3st 2lb and Helena had lost 2st. This meant Steve had gone down to 13st 2lb, whilst Helena was delighted to ditch her size 14 wardrobe in exchange for a slim size 8. Now at what Steve calls their ‘baseline weights’, managing their diet has become much easier. “I didn’t used to like vegetables, but after being weaned off the supplements, I actually craved them! Now we go to the supermarket and we know what a healthy trolley looks like, so it’s been a massive education too. “I used to see slim people and think ‘I want to look like that’ and now I do. Helena says she feels like a new person. I actually came home the other day and was surprised to find her boxing. We’ve been getting so many compliments – I feel younger!”

MAKE YOUR BATHROOM AN EXCITING ADDITION TO YOUR HOME WITH THE HELP OF AC BATHROOMS AND HEATING.

Quality and beauty any of us can feel like our homes are looking a little the worse for wear. Perhaps lacking a touch of loving care. Maybe you recently moved home and the previous resident’s taste was far-removed from your own, or you have been living in the same house for so long it is badly in need of a makeover. Whatever the reasons, if your living space doesn’t come up to scratch, nothing livens up the old homestead quite like upgrading your bathroom. Whether it is a full bathroom suite with power shower and free-standing bath, or just upgrading your current arrangement with smart new taps, an en-suite for the master bedroom or maybe even ‘moving up’ and creating an extra bedroom with wet room in the attic, it’s an investment that will add value to your home and make familiar surroundings seem exciting and more welcoming than ever before. Or how about the new range of designer radiators? Fit them throughout the house and it will really look like the home of the future. Alternatively, fit just one in a kitchen or

hallway as a design feature. It can totally transform a room, making it look a lot more modern. It’s a tempting prospect – and AC Bathrooms and Heating is packed with brilliant examples, from traditional to ultramodern, to help you take the plunge. This is a new, improved setting for a familiar and well-respected name in Sheffield. Owner Andy Melbourne set up the business in Crookes six years ago, but relocated to larger premises two years ago to meet increasing demand. “Good service, along with value for money, is the cornerstone of our success and the feedback we were getting from clients was that they liked the products but they wanted to see more room settings so they could get a clearer idea of what they really wanted.” AC Bathrooms and Heating now has that extra space and has used it well, creating a dazzling selection of room settings to show off their quality merchandise at its best. They now have over 50 bathroom displays across two units, with leading brand names including Rak Ceramics, Vitra, Roca, Tavistock, Grohe, Laufen and Burlington – all at very competitive prices.

@SixerRMC

And if anything is not currently in stock, Andy guarantees that he can get it within a couple of days. “One customer was panicking recently because he needed to start work on his new bathroom in a month. I was able to reassure him that everything he wanted would be available within 48 hours.” AC Bathrooms and Heating also supply plumbing and heating materials to cover all your domestic needs. They also have a list of recommended gas and bathroom fitters to help you get the job done to the highest possible standards. The AC Bathrooms and Heating showroom couldn’t be easier to find, on Rutland Way directly opposite the Wickes Store. And with another formidable local business, The Tile Store, right next door, you are sure to find plenty of inspiration as you set about upgrading your home.

Their greatest asset lies in the people – a wonderful team of enthusiastic students, committed staff and supportive parents and governors. They are proud of their impressive track record of exam results and serve the community beyond Stocksbridge including Hillsborough, High Green and Chapeltown. What parents say: “We have been made every welcome when we moved to the school in Y9. My daughter is making fantastic progress.” “I feel that the school is very friendly. It is very welcoming and always looks clean and tidy. It has good community connections.” “School keeps my child on the right path ensuring progress is made to enable her to reach excellent grades.” The school believe in ensuring students receive a well-rounded curriculum, where individual talents can be spotted and nurtured to ensure that everyone experiences success and reaches their full potential.

Wharncliffe Side Primary School and Nursery Located on the outskirts of Sheffield in a beautiful rural setting, Wharncliffe Side is a small school providing for children from two to 11 years old. They’re proud of the attitudes and behaviour of pupils and aim for them to be well prepared and enthusiastic for the next stage of their education. The nursery has a small two and three-year-old section and integrated resource facilities for pupils with special needs and disabilities. It also has a well-resourced outdoor area where children enjoy the benefits of learning outdoors, including activities such as forest schools. In the main primary classes, children learn through a crosscurricular topic approach and the staff put a great deal of value on children developing into well-rounded individuals but also they like pupils to develop their own interests and talents such as sport and music. The pupils predominantly move to Bradfield Secondary School but a small number of pupils will go to other schools such as Stocksbridge High School, Forge Valley, Girls High School or one of Sheffield’s specialist schools. To visit the school or for further information contact the school office.

MIchael Liversidge

Is it last orders for the city’s traditional pubs? FATHER AND SON HIGHLIGHT THE DECLINE OF SHEFFIELD’S PUB CULTURE heffield is as much a city of ale as it is a city of steel. It’s the real ale capital of the world and to the discerning ale drinker, it’s the public houses that, over the years, have put the city on the map. As a city with more breweries in proportion to its population than anywhere in the UK and one that hosts the CAMRA Steel City beer festival, there has never been a shortage of places to sink a pint or two. However, some of the city’s longer-standing pubs have closed over the years, and those that remain have fast found themselves wondering if they are becoming a dying breed. According to the institute of economic affairs, British pub culture is slowly declining and around 21,000 pubs have disappeared since 1980, with analysts expecting thousands more to close before the decade is out. What’s more, heavy taxes on alcohol have ensured beer continues to rise above the rate of inflation and, while the price of an average pint prices continue to climb, savvy shoppers are encouraged to buy more alcohol from supermarkets. In recent years, more and more people have preferred to drink in the comfort of their own home. “Pub culture is still good in Sheffield, but it’s diminishing because of the alcohol prices. New pubs are appearing with cheaper prices, taking away some of the longer standing pubs’ business,” says Michael Liversidge, author of The A-Z of Public Houses.

S

“I think now is a waiting time for the closure of older pubs. You used to be able to walk to each one easily, but now you have to travel a bit further afield,” adds Michael. Returning to the halcyon days of some of Sheffield’s best loved public houses, Michael’s son, Mark Liversidge, has produced a book entitled Closing Times, a focus on some of these beloved establishments and where they were then and now. Mark’s book is a follow-on from his father’s, The A-Z of Sheffield Public Houses, published around 20 years ago, which was well received by the people of Sheffield and sold reasonably well for a small print run, local interest book. “When I was about nine or ten, I had a camera bought for me. I ended up taking

photographs of public houses as they interested me and years later I saw they weren’t there and decided to write about it,” says Michael. “I part own Pickards printers and there are facilities there to do your own hobbies. After publishing our first book for a customer, we realised how simple it was. So I decided to publish my own.” Mark, years later, noticed that the A-Z, which included over 600 images and profiles of public houses, had seen closures of around 400 of the hostelries that were still serving when his father was a frequent pub goer. “This book was a joint project between father and son. Mark chose all the old historic pictures from the seventies, eighties and nineties of mine that he wanted and then matched them with his up to date ones,” Michael adds. Using over 100 of Michael’s original images, Mark found the locations of these now demolished drinking establishments to produce the then-and-now format book with the aim of reminding locals of the good times had in these old Sheffield pubs. Hopefully Sheffield’s remaining pubs will continue to change and adapt with the times, and the ones that we love the most will survive. If you have any questions about the book contact Michael or Mark Liversidge on mliversidge@pickards.org.uk or 0114 275 7222.

THE DEEP END, LANGSETT ROAD

HERE ARE JUST A FEW OF THE ESTABLISHMENTS FROM THE SIXER AREA FEATURED IN CLOSING TIMES SHOWING THEM AS THEY WERE THEN WITH WHAT’S THERE NOW.

THEN

NOW

Converted from Hillsborough and Walkley baths into a public house aptly named Deep End by Tom Cobleigh in the 1990s. Later, Wetherspoons stepped in and renovated it to a much higher standard with better beer prices and good pub grub. Now called The Rawson Spring, it is very busy every day of the week.

THE GATE INN, PENISTONE ROAD

THE BEEHIVE, DYKES HALL ROAD

THEN

THEN The smoking ban and competition from supermarket chains were the final nails in the Beehive’s coffin, according to a former landlady. The pub was the third to close in the S6 area NOW between 2006 and 2008. The landlady said she had been forced to call time because of a dramatic drop in customer numbers. The Beehive became a Tesco supermarket.

The Gate Inn was a feature of Penistone Road along with the Travellers and Fletchers Bakery. In July 2006, the bakery caught fire and within a few years the two public houses were also closed and demolished. Sainsbury’s stepped in with a new supermarket.

THEN

NOW

THEN

THE BELLE VUE, WALKLEY

THE CAMBRIDGE, PENISTONE ROAD

NOW Situated at the rear of Hillsborough Barracks on Penistone Road and named after Adolphus Frederick, Duke of Cambridge, and seventh son of King George III. The John Smiths public house closed to make way for a road widening project and now a Renault showroom stands in its place.

A John Smiths, Magnet Ales, public house that stood vacant for quite a while, The Belle Vue has now been turned into private accommodation. This pub was located at the top of Walkley and guaranteed visitors great views over Hillfoot, Parkwood Springs and the city centre.

Glyn in the ring at the Sheffield Boxing Centre

Sixer

RING MASTER

RACHEL MARTIN TALKS TO THE MAN HELPING TO PUT YOUNGSTERS ON THE ROAD TO SUCCESS THROUGH BOXING. t was in a boxing gym that former professional boxer, Glyn Rhodes, MBE, got his life on track. “I’m not proud to say it now but I caused a few people, including my teachers, nightmares. I left school at 16 with no qualifications and was unemployed straight away.” He recalls. “We all thought we were pretty hard, and so we joined Brendan Ingle’s boxing gym as a pastime.” Glyn ended up staying at Brendan’s gym for 17 years, working and learning to box at an amateur level, which changed his life, he says, to a point where he still maintains it was the best move he ever made. “In Brendan, I found a man I could respect and I just really enjoyed having a fight to be honest. I’d never been off our council estate before and suddenly I was going to places like London and stopping in big hotels.” In his amateur years not all of Glyn’s fights

were successful, but nevertheless, he turned pro at 19 and with Brendan as his manager/trainer he quickly became known as the ‘Showboat’. He went on to box 65 times professionally and travelled all over Europe to fight in France, Italy, Ireland, Portugal and Switzerland. “I never won abroad but I got a chance to travel to places I would never have visited if I had stayed hanging around on street corners and getting in trouble with my mates, and it was through boxing that I was given a chance to meet people I would never normally have met. People who would go on to change my life for the better.” Glyn ‘Showboat’ Rhodes retired in 1993 and immediately went on to earn his trainer’s license in 1994, followed swiftly by his manager’s license and eventually his promoter’s license.

WHO’S YOUR HERO? Do you know someone who is going that extra mile to raise funds for a good cause or make a difference in their community? Has a friend or relative overcome adversity and channelled their energies into helping others? Please let us know... so we can share the good news in Sixer every month. Contact managing editor Chris Wilson at chris.wilson@rmcmedia.co.uk

After teaching the sport for a couple of months, Glyn knew this was what he wanted to do full-time and, with that, he opened Sheffield Boxing Centre on Burton Street, Hillsborough. During his time as a professional trainer, Glyn has had the pleasure of working with an ever growing number of kids from similar backgrounds and some have even gone on to grow into domestic and international title challengers. “The first kid I trained for a British title was Richie Wenton from Liverpool, who then travelled to Italy to fight for the European title and ultimately went on to Atlantic City to fight for the world title against the great Marco Antonio Barrera. “Our very own Sam ‘Speedy’ Sheedy, who’s been with us since he was 11, won the Commonwealth middleweight title earlier this year too, so we’re doing something right. “When I was pro, I never trained hard enough. I could have done much better if I’d have tried and I want to be the person to stop others making that same mistake. “At the gym, I’m a mother, father, psychologist and psychiatrist and to see young boys come out of their shells, develop and improve is brilliant. The boxing gym gives people who thought they had no options the realisation that they can get something out of life.” More recently, Glyn was able to fly three amateur boxers, Robbie Brookes (16), Keenan Wainright (19) and Leon Musson (15) to California to fight at the Riverside County Boxing Club in Canyon Lake. They also squeezed in a short recreational trip to Las Vegas and a visit to the famous Wild Card gym, established in 1995 by renowned trainer Freddie Roach. “Opportunities like that don’t come around very often, if at all, for these boys. “It's the biggest opportunity of their young careers so far and Robbie, Keenan and Leon worked so hard to help raise the funds that made the trip possible. They took part in boxing exhibitions, sponsored walks and even the Leeds Half Marathon, raising £1,000 each, and if it wasn’t for all the generous people who donated - some big-hearted people's donations were more than £100 - they wouldn’t have been given a chance to go. “That’s what boxing does - it brings people

together, and it really does restore your faith in humanity. I want to extend a huge thank you to everyone who helped make the trip a success, because without you, all this wouldn’t have been possible.” Glyn would like to continue to raise funds to help take more young fighters abroad to box and hopes that next year, they will be able to return to California with a full team. He plans to run more charity boxing shows and take part in, as well as run, more sponsored events and urges the local community to continue to go along and donate what they can. “When you think about three lads from Sheffield boxing in California, it's unbelievable. I feel like I’m the luckiest person in the world, to be able to do what I’m doing. “If it wasn’t for the people who helped me during some of the most difficult times in my life, I wouldn’t be where I am now, and if I can spend the rest of my life helping kids going through the same thing and watching them succeed, I’ll be happy. “The gym is not just about me, there are a lot of other people who are the backbone of it and this is only the beginning – we have a plan. We want to raise as much as we can to give more kids a chance to fight in competitions nationwide and hope that by next year, we will have a full team of young fighters ready to box around the globe. We’ve even been invited back to California. “Without your support, we would not be able to make a difference and your donations - at every level - really are helping these kids turn their lives around. Thank you, from the bottom of my heart.” Having been included in the 2013 New Years Honours list, Glyn Rhodes was awarded an MBE for his services to boxing and a variety of charities, reinforcing and legitimising all the effort that he has put into boxing during his 41 year involvement in the sport.

Fox Valley celebrates first anniversary

Happy anniversary TONE House What a difference two years makes. TONE House, the ladies-only fitness club on Middlewood Road, is celebrating their second year in business. Owner Kayleigh Mitchell is delighted to see the business continue to go from strength to strength and is focussing on further improving their member results. “Over the last two years, we have helped lots of ladies achieve the goals they never thought was possible,” said Kayleigh. “A lot of people go to the gym but then lose motivation. TONE House is about surrounding these people with like-minded individuals and building a community where everyone helps each other. “What I always say is you only have one life – run with your goals and let us guide you along the way.” TONE House welcomes all ladies and Kayleigh stresses that you don’t have to be a gym person to benefit from what’s on offer. Call them today 0114 233 2894 to come and have a look around the club.
