ere’s a photograph of a jolly outing and there’s a banner with writing on it which should work as a clue, but can you tell us anything about the occasion? Many thanks to Barry Couldwell for supplying the image. Last month’s stroll down Memory Lane was instantly recognised by our old friend Joe Castle, who spotted the junction of Minto Road and Middlewood Road, close to Hillsborough Park. Joe tells us the very large house on the left hand side of Minto Road was, for many years, the Sacred Heart Convent and many of the Sisters who lived there taught at the nearby Sacred Heart Church day school at Ripley Street.

Getting up and down has never been easier, thanks to Barkers One of the problems with ageing seems to be the whole getting up and down, or in and out situation. Whether it be in bed, the stairs, bath or armchairs, things just seem to get more difficult. All this could change with a visit to either of the Barkers Furniture showrooms in Hillsborough. At Burton Street you will find a good range of comfortable chairs with great support for your back. You may prefer one which has an electronic motor that slowly raises you to your feet, or from your feet to a comfortable sitting position. You can recline and put your feet up, all at the touch of a button. You’ll be comfortable and relaxed, it could really change your life. You will be made very welcome at Barkers Furniture, a traditional family run business whose staff will be eager to give great customer service, without being pushy. They will help you to find the best product for you, whether it be a comfortable chair, a new sofa or a bed. With many famous brands available you are sure to find a quality piece of furniture that is perfect for you. At the Penistone Road showroom Barkers also have on display a range of electric adjustable beds. These allow you to control your sleeping position and can be particularly useful for anyone with mobility issues as well as having benefits for a range of other conditions. Anyone who suffers from swelling complaints can relieve the pressure and pain

by elevating their affected limbs. By raising limbs above heart level the pressure in this part of the body is released and circulation improves. This being a far more consistent method than placing pillows beneath limbs.

In addition, for people suffering with chronic pain, an adjustable bed can help by easing you in and out of bed every day. They also provide a range of positions to sleep in. Each time you elevate your back or legs you are realigning your vertebrae and adjusting the pressure they place on your nerves and spine. An example being if your lower back is sore it is recommended that you elevate your legs, creating a pelvic tilt which can relieve strain on the affected muscles. It has also been found that sleeping in a slightly more upright position has the additional benefit of decreasing snoring, as this often occurs due to blocked airways!

PROMOTIONVIP CAMPER HIRE

Embrace your adventurous side – rent a campervan or motorhome from Sheffield-based VIP Camper Hire.

E

ver wanted to get away from it all, embracing the freedom of the open road and waking up each morning in the fresh air? VIP Camper Hire in Sheffield offers the perfect opportunity for adventure. The beautifully refurbished, fully customised Volkswagens are available to rent for just £275 for a three-night weekend or £550 for a full week. Both vehicles have been expertly built, restored and customised to an exceptionally high standard. The motorhome sleeps four and features a bathroom with shower and WC, a fridge/freezer, a kitchen with sink and gas cooker/hob, storage, a TV and DVD player, a gas heater, a cycle rack for two bikes, a reversing camera and a wind-out awning. It’s a real home from home. The more compact campervan drives like a car, making it perfect for navigating narrow country roads or for those unsure about driving a larger vehicle. Transporting and sleeping up to five, it has an elevating roof, a kitchen with sink and gas hob, a fridge/freezer, an air heater, storage, a cycle rack for two bikes, a reversing camera and a wind-out awning. Whether you fancy a weekend in the Peaks, want to surprise your other half with a trip away, are planning several weeks travelling around Europe, or would like to make the vehicles part of your next celebration, the options are endless. The vans make a unique

addition to a wedding – imagine wowing your guests by hiring this modern version of a classic campervan as your wedding transport, or retiring to the motorhome with your new husband or wife after a day of celebration. The average motorhome costs in excess of £40,000 and is therefore unaffordable or unjustifiable for many people who would love to own one. With VIP Camper Hire, you can enjoy all the benefits without the huge price tag or the guilt of seeing it sit on the drive most of the year. If you are thinking of buying your own campervan or motorhome, VIP Camper Hire offers the perfect opportunity to carry out a proper road test. For more information, FAQs and a gallery of pictures, visit www.vipcamperhire.co.uk. hat is a funeral pan? Essentially, it’s a means of bringing everyone peace of mind. A funeral plan allows you to protect your friends and family from the emotional and financial burden of arranging a funeral at an already difficult time. With a plan, you make all your own decisions about the day, and pay for the funeral based on today’s prices. You can relax in the knowledge that everything’s been covered, and you and those you love will be protected from rising costs. Sorting out the arrangements in advance means you are guaranteed the funeral you’d like and your loved ones are spared the additional distress of organising it and paying for it. It makes the whole process much easier for the people you leave behind and it puts in black and white exactly what you want to happen, avoiding any misunderstanding or chance of arguing.

You need to take advice if… • You or your spouse/partner don’t yet have a Will.

WITH A FUNERAL PLAN, YOU’RE LEAVING A POSITIVE LEGACY l You create a unique day, so you're remembered the way you want to be. l You select the arrangements, so your loved ones don't have to make difficult decisions. l You remove any financial burden by covering the costs of the funeral yourself. l You give your family the chance to add their own personal touches when the time comes. l You protect yourself from rising costs, because a Pre-paid Funeral Plan is set at today’s prices.

• You have a Will but it leaves everything to your spouse/partner.

FIXING YOUR COSTS NOW IS SIMPLY FINANCIAL COMMON SENSE, BUT ARE PRICES TRULY GUARANTEED? On average, unlike our savings, funeral costs have doubled over the last decade. Rising well above the level of inflation, it’s a trend that looks set to continue due to factors including a lack of reasonably priced land for cemeteries, and need for crematoria to invest in their facilities. With (for example) a Co-operative Funeralcare Funeral Plan, it is guaranteed that there will be no more to pay for the services you have included when the time comes, regardless of how much funeral costs increase in the future. In particular, CoOperative Funeralcare pre-paid plans are not only already exceptionally well priced, but unlike other providers, their plans include all third party costs and disbursements, so there will never be any more to pay...

• You are divorced or widowed.

• You don’t have both kinds of Lasting Powers of Attorney set up. • You or your spouse/partner don’t have a pre-paid Funeral Plan. • You have children. • You are concerned about what will happen and covering the costs if you need long term residential care.

TAKING OUT A PLAN ON BEHALF OF A LOVED ONE None of us like to think about the funeral of someone close to us. But a funeral plan could help you create a truly fitting send-off for them, while also relieving you of difficult decisions and the financial burden when the time eventually comes. You can arrange a funeral plan for a partner, spouse, close relative or dependant. SETTING UP A PRE-PAID FUNERAL PLAN This is very easy and completion of your plan application is very simple and straightforward. There are a variety of plans and payment alternatives to suit everyone. There are no age or health restrictions and no hidden costs. This can all be done in the comfort of your own home by arranging a meeting to gain more information. For a friendly, personal service without obligation just call us on 0114 288 1104

I Did It My Way

Dare to discover... There’s more to Niagara than just a sports and social club. We profile some of the area’s thriving businesses, writes Fiona Barber.

Brush and Needle Sharon Burrows has been in the painting and decorating industry and a college lecturer for 20 years. She decided on a change of direction last year and set up a business in something she loves to do – vintage furniture and textile decoration. She has also been sewing for a number of years, making her own soft furnishings for her family, home and clients. Keen to pass on her expertise, Sharon opened Brush and Needle in October 2015 and now runs classes from her workshop in sewing, knitting and crocheting for the home including cushions, blinds, curtains, bags and toys. She also runs classes in furniture painting using Frenchic furniture paint. During classes, students use these amazing products and learn the basics for a professional finish. Give that old 20th century furniture or textile a new purpose in the 21st century and make them look fresh and fabulous once again.

I Did It My Way recently moved to Niagara Road, and as well as offering a beautiful new environment for their clients, they have also expanded their team. They are constantly striving for excellent customer service and offer everything from the traditional to the unique. All prices are fully inclusive and their basic service starts at £2,150 (cremation only). They also offer colourful coffins, with the hearse and one limousine to accommodate the family at a fully inclusive cost of £2,900 (cremation only). The wicker coffin range has proved to be especially popular and the staff at I Did It My Way weave flowers around the outside to create a look of natural beauty at no extra cost. This is also priced at £2,900 and includes the hearse and one limousine. This helps families to save money and also provides an environmentally friendly, natural look. Their client reviews speak for themselves; a wall in their new office is adorned with cards, and their Facebook page has many positive reviews. ompassionate and energetic, historic and cultural, innovative and cohesive. For the organisers of Hillsfest, this is what defines the Hillsborough community. To celebrate the people, places and community of Hillsborough, and to put the area back on the map for all the right reasons, Hillsborough Park will become a hotbed of creativity on 9 and 10 July for the first Hillsfest event. A free arts festival linked with industry, heritage and music, Hillsfest will have an international reach, celebrating all things Sheffield with a particular emphasis on the Hillsborough community. Hillsfest is the brainchild of Karen Sherwood, Cupola Contemporary Art Gallery’s owner and curator. In celebration of 25 years at her Middlewood Road gallery, she wanted to thank the community for their custom and originally decided to host an art fair. But after discussion with the community, Karen realised the people of Hillsborough wanted an event bigger than the one she had initially planned and Hillsfest was born – a free local festival that aims to promote Hillsborough in a positive light. Karen said: “I want to show how valuable creative activity is. If we don’t do things every day that lift our spirits then we don’t have much.” Hillsborough Park will be transformed for the weekend and taken

The citywide Year of Making project aims to celebrate everything made in the city, from art and music to specialist engineering. Like Karen’s view for Hillsfest, Year of Making hopes to promote Sheffield’s reputation for excellence and innovation on the international stage. Karen recognises how important the link between creativity and innovation is, and wants to promote the relationship between the two at Hillsfest. She said:“Without creativity you don’t get innovation and without innovation there is nothing.” Below: Rejuvenate - mixed With more than 30,000 people expected media sculpture by Kate Sully at the festival over two days, Karen has had her work cut out organising Hillsfest, but has had a huge amount of support from the people of Hillsborough. She said:“It’s enormously exciting and we are very keen to do something extraordinary. People have been very generous, it’s amazing.” With little time to apply for major grants and no admission fee revenue Karen is raising money for Hillsfest with the help of the community. More than 100 artists have donated pieces to Karen’s online shop, with funds raised from their sale going towards Hillsfest. Raffle tickets are also being sold to win some of the work, so people can donate to the festival from as little as £1. COMPLETE KITCHEN & BEDROOM SOLUTIONS

Fitted in S35, May 2016

From a replacement worktop to a whole new kitchen or bedroom, there’s no job too small for CKB. aving traded out of Middlewood Road for over six years now, the Sheffield public are becoming well aware of the high quality, bespoke service on offer at Complete Kitchens and Bedroom Solutions. Owned by Scott Webster, CKB offer a complete kitchen and bedroom service alongside the capability of anything from removing walls to building extensions. Scott said: “When you come to us you really do get everything. Building work, electrics, plastering, decoration, fitting, flooring – this is a one-stop-shop.” But just because Scott and his team can perform complete renovations, that doesn’t mean that they have to. CKB understand that not everybody can afford top to bottom renovations at this moment in time so are more than happy to work on anything from replacing a single kitchen unit upwards. “I can do eight metres of worktop and a new sink and tap for £950 or a whole kitchen or bedroom – so people can have whatever they can budget for,” said Scott. “And if you have your own electrician or plumber that you would like to use then you are more than welcome to do so. We

H

CKB

will do as little or as much as you wish.” A feature of CKB which sets it apart from many of its competitors is that it manufactures everything on site, giving it a bespoke service. This means it can cater to any needs or desires. Scott employs a close team of dedicated workers including a registered electrician, and plumber, as well as qualified plasterer, brick layers and window fitters, who are all contracted to CKB. Gloss doors particularly in white and cream are in vogue at the current time. This gives a room a fresh appearance and Scott has seen requests for this design boom. Consequently Scott is offering deals on an Astro white and cream gloss – check in at the showroom or give him a call for more deals. Scott doesn’t believe in such gimmicks as offering customers ten per cent off their total bill though. “These are often used to pull the wool over people’s eyes. I offer competitive prices from the word go.” Should you contact CKB, Scott will come out to view your home for a free appointment. The visit normally lasts for an hour depending on job size. “I don’t give

quotes off-the-cuff. I am meticulous when it comes to pricing, so post-appointment I will go through everything and provide an accurate, itemised and fair quote.” Scott is the initial point of contact for customers and he not only designs his work but does the fitting too. Once Scott has committed to a job he dedicates all his time to it from inception to completion. He guarantees that he will not be working on multiple projects at one time and is even willing to turn down work to be able to do this. “My customers like to know that I will always be there and that they have my undivided attention. That is the least they deserve and will get when they come to me.” As such his customers can contact him 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Doors and worktops are guaranteed for a decade but for extra peace of mind Scott ensures that payment comes in instalments and that the full fee is not paid until the job has been completed satisfactorily. For a company that will provide your home with undivided, specialist and bespoke attention, give CKB a call today!

PROMOTIONG&M HEALTHCARE

G&M Healthcare have the best treatments to help the real you shine through.

THE CHOICE IS YOURS

Dermalux

G

&M Healthcare is a GP-led clinic in Broomhill, Sheffield. The experts at G&M Healthcare are dedicated to helping people look their best and, with a new range of treatments on offer, clients are truly spoilt for choice.

Carboxytherapy Carboxytherapy can increase skin elasticity, help with hydration, pain relief and a reduction in localised fat deposits. The Venusian CO2 Therapy machine is used to administer pulses of carbon dioxide, which improves microcirculation by re-opening closed blood capillaries, reactivating malfunctioning blood capillaries, and in turn increases the supply of oxygen to tissues. Carboxytherapy is used to treat many conditions, including scars and stretch marks, anti-aging (wrinkles and skin rejuvenation), hairloss/thinning, psoriasis, vascular related sexual impotence (erectile dysfunction), vaginal rejuvenation, venous ulcers and restless legs syndrome (RLS). It can also be used as pain therapy for conditions such as osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, frozen shoulder, tendinitis and muscular pain. It is a quick procedure and patients usually go back to normal activities

Laser hair removal Special offer (using the top of the range Soprano XL laser machine, which can be used on all skin types) £20/session for small areas, £30/session for medium areas and £40/session for large areas.

immediately after treatment. Depending on the seriousness of the problem, six to ten weekly treatments may be required. The effects of the treatments are cumulative and usually last six to 12 months. Special offer: £75 for a 15-minute treatment.

Toskani Mesotherapy Toskani Mesotherapy is a treatment that delivers nourishing substances including vitamins, amino acids and minerals to the layers of skin where cell repair and growth occurs. As these are all essential components for healthy skin cells, this treatment helps improve dull, tired looking, dry and lifeless skin, manages superficial wrinkles and is ideal for pre or post-operative skin conditioning. All the substances in this treatment occur naturally in the skin but decrease as our skin becomes older and stressed. Mesotherapy replaces these naturally occurring vitamins, and nutrients and skin becomes luminescent, hydrated, nourished and firmer with an improved texture. As well as improving skin quality, Mesotherapy can also be used to treat hair loss. The new improved formula by Toskani has established Meso-Hair as one of the most common aesthetic procedures for male and female patients. Special offer: £75/session.

While light exposure is often associated with negative effects such as skin ageing and damage, light also has many positive influences on the body. It helps us produce vitamin D, provides serotonin and it can also encourage cell growth and collagen rejuvenation. Dermalux Led Phototherapy is the leading light in LED phototherapy. It uses three wavelengths of near-infrared, blue and red light, which are absorbed into the skin at different levels. The wavelengths provide energy and stimulate a variety of natural processes of the skin including activating fibroblasts, which improve the structure of the skin, increasing the production of collagen and elastin. This makes skin firmer, speeds up the skin’s natural healing and reduces inflammation; improving the appearance of spots and reducing bacteria that causes acne. It can also be used to treat rosacea, redness and flushing, pigmentation, psoriasis and other inflammatory conditions. The treatment is pain-free and suitable for all skin types with an excellent safety profile. Each treatment lasts approximately 20 minutes and is a pleasant, relaxing experience in which you’re placed under the light. The friendly team at G&M will advise on the best combination of light and course of treatment depending on the condition of your skin. Special offer: £50 per session. SIXERSTANNINGTON CARNIVAL

COME ON DOWN! Phoebe Seymour previews Stannington Carnival – the biggest event of the year that brings the whole of Stannington together.

I

t’s not often that we get a chance to feel a part of our local community. The annual Stannington Carnival is a fantastic opportunity to get involved with local groups and clubs, to catch up with old friends, and to make new ones. “It’s a chance to get out and meet your neighbours,” says organiser Penny Simpson.“It’s one of the main events in Stannington and a lot of people say it’s their favourite day of the year.”

68 SIXER MAGAZINE

Not only is the carnival a great day out for all the family with plenty of food and craft stalls, rides and entertainment, it’s also a chance to give something back. “Primarily, it’s a fundraiser event to help local organisations such as the library, the Scouts, the Guides, and the local schools,” continues Penny. “Funding for things such as Brownie camping trips means parents don’t have to pay as much, whilst the local library is something which benefits all the community.” Last year, Stannington Carnival raised approximately £4,500, which the committee shared between Action for Stannington, Stannington Brass Band, Stannington Players and many more worthy causes. Taking place on Saturday 9 July, this year’s event promises to be bigger and better than ever, as the carnival will be celebrating its 25th anniversary. Fittingly, there will be a silver theme running through all of the activities on the day including the parade, which will involve children from all the schools such as Shooter’s Grove, Forest School, and Stannington Infants School. Returning to lead the parade again this year will be The Sheffield Giants – two huge puppets who proved very popular last year. They

@SixerRMC

www.regionalmagazine.co.uk

068 - 069 Sixer June16_Layout 1 02/06/2016 09:15 Page 2

will be joined by the local Brownies, Girl Guides and Scouts who will all be making their way to Stannington Park (The Pavillion at Lomas Hall) in fancy dress, followed by Stannington Brass Band. This year’s programme includes a Punch and Judy show, a bouncy castle, Citizen’s Advice, plant and fashion stalls, performances from Stannington Brass Band, the Training Band and local dance group BM Myers, and a fire engine for kids to explore. And to mark this special 25th anniversary event, Sheffield Hallam MP Nick Clegg will be officially opening the carnival at 12pm. No alcohol will be served at the event, but the organisers are encouraging families to support their local pubs such as The Peacock, The Crown & Glove and The Rose & Crown Inn (Minnie’s). It is hoped these pubs will get involved by putting on after-show events too. Carnival regulars like the car show will be back with an impressive array of vintage automobiles, while the Underbank Art Group will once again be holding an art exhibition in the marquee. However, if you are planning on inquiring about joining, you’ll have to be patient - this hugely popular art group currently has 36 regular members and a growing waiting list. The marquee has been at the carnival every year since 1999, soon after the art group began and has remained a firm favourite ever since. Any money made on the artwork goes back into the cost of hiring the hall at the Underbank Chapel, arts materials and towards paying established artists to come and do one-off workshops.

“We look at how we can contribute to the community too,” says one art member. “The marquee gets quite crowded on the day. A number of members help put up the marquee and man it – it’s good team work! “So many people help to make the carnival a success each year. The people who run it are marvellous because it’s so big now.” The Stannington Carnival has certainly grown since it started as a small fair at Lomas Hall many years ago. So what is it that keeps people coming back year after year? “You can spend as little or as much as you like,” says Penny. “Wander around and watch the entertainment or break the bank buying presents for friends and family from the various craft stalls on offer. It’s a fun event for all the family.”

Penny and her team are always looking for new volunteers to help organise Stannington Carnival. For more information on how you can get involved, contact Penny on 0114 2339646, email stanningtoncarnival@gmail.com or send a Facebook message to www.facebook.com/stanningtoncarnival. www.regionalmagazine.co.uk

THE LOMAS HALL Run by the community, for the community

Lomas Hall is a community facility nestled in the heart of Stannington, situated next door to the beautiful Stannington Christ Church, only 6 miles out of Sheffield. The hall was opened in 1955 and presented to the village of Stannington in trust by Miss Flora Lomas. Today the hall is run as a charitable organisation and is managed by a voluntary committee made up of local people. Funds to keep the hall running come solely from the people of the stannington community and the supporters who make use of the hall. Lomas Hall is a fantastic multifunctional building available for hire; we have two main rooms - the Main Hall with a stage and balcony area which can accommodate up to 300 people seated and adjacent to the Main Hall is the smaller Knowle Room with a capacity of 60 people the two rooms have easy access to each other through folding doors, the Knowle Room can be hired separately or with the Main Hall. We have a kitchen with commercial facilities, a fully equipped/staffed bar, and an adequate car park making our hall perfect for meetings, wedding receptions, dinners, special celebration parties or community activities. The Hall has a multitude of uses which make it an ideal venue for any event which you may have in mind.

SIXERSHOULDER OF MUTTON

With its varied menus, real ales and fine wines, Danny and Chris have the recipe for success at The Shoulder of Mutton.

W

ith hearty homemade pub food at reasonable prices in an idyllic countryside location, Danny Simpson and Chris Deakin, new managers at The Shoulder of Mutton, Worrall, are determined to transform the pub back into a thriving village local. The pair met when working in the kitchen of The Admiral Rodney on Loxley Road. They then went on to run the kitchen at The Hollybush in Rivelin before taking on The Shoulder of Mutton at the beginning of 2016. Before the pub was taken over by the pair, it had changed hands numerous times and was struggling to succeed, but Chris and Danny are already bucking that trend. Set in the beautiful rural setting of Worrall, The Shoulder of Mutton is a bar and restaurant serving homemade food alongside fine wines and real ales in the comfort of the lounge bar or restaurant with open log fireplace. Despite their new roles in management, Chris and Danny have stuck to their roots as chefs and work in The Shoulder of Mutton kitchen seven days a week preparing an extensive menu of homemade pub classics. Burgers and pies are their speciality, and the pair use Sheffield butchers and fishmongers to keep their produce as local as possible. Each night has a theme at The Shoulder of Mutton, showcasing the range of homemade food on offer. Keeping to tradition, customers can choose from a selection of meats or a vegetarian option for their roast on a Sunday, and Friday is reserved for fish and chips. On selected Saturdays, the pub treats customers to something extra special, from live music to gourmet burger nights. Monday is pizza night and Tuesdays feature homemade pies made by Chris and Danny themselves. Wednesday is curry night, a range of curries is available, made using the pub’s secret recipes and fresh ingredients. Quiz night is on Thursdays

and customers can sample Chris and Danny’s food when the free half-time buffet is served. Since their takeover, Chris and Danny have built a steady regular customer base and many diners return to the restaurant to sample other dishes on the menu. The Shoulder of Mutton has become particularly popular among Worrall’s older residents during the week. There is an exclusive OAP lunchtime menu offering two meals for £6 on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Also available throughout the week is the Early Bird Menu, served 12-5pm Monday to Saturday, from which guests can choose two hearty meals for £9.95, With two chefs in charge The Shoulder of Mutton’s menu is always evolving and there are plans to update it in the summer. Chris and Danny are well on the way to achieving their dream of turning The Shoulder of Mutton into a bustling village pub. The pair are already making a name for themselves in Worrall, and have triumphed in turning The Shoulder of Mutton into a success story. SIXERHEALTH

STEPS TO SUCCESS Joe Wicks has become an internet sensation but can he really make you ‘lean in 15’? Fiona Barber looks at The Body Coach’s online fitness and nutrition plan.

U

nless you’ve been avoiding all social media for the last year or so, you will have heard of Joe Wicks – AKA The Body Coach. This fitness guru became an Instagram sensation – he has 1.1million followers to date – by posting 15-second long videos cooking up healthy dishes that can be ready in 15 minutes under #leanin15. And, unlike many other diet plans, Joe’s 90-Day Shape, Shift and Sustain (SSS) diet and exercise plan is proving it is here to stay.

What is it? This online fitness and nutrition plan is designed for men and women of all fitness levels who want to get fit, burn fat and build muscle. This tailored plan has already helped transform the lives of over 100,000 people around the world since it launched in 2014. The plan costs £147, and those who sign up are sent a detailed questionnaire and asked to complete a food diary to get a

clear picture of overall health, nutritional history and lifestyle. Joe’s team use this to create a tailored calorie and macronutrient meal plan. The Body Coach also now has two cookery books out, so those who might not want to commit to the cost of the whole plan can get a taster of what dishes to cook and an education on what to eat when.

What do you get for your money? Recipes for over 100 tasty, easy-to-prepare meals including dishes you might not expect to find on a diet plan such as banana protein pancakes, build-up bagels, curries, burgers, and wraps. A new exercise plan is also sent each month, which can be done at the gym or at home, with minimal equipment. Training includes a combination of short HIIT (high intensity interval training) cardio workouts. A major selling point for many on the plan is that there is no need to spend hours and hours exercising, just 2030 minutes of really pushing yourself is enough to get results. Joe also has his own YouTube channel (TheBodyCoachTV), which features plenty of exercise videos, which is great if you’re stuck for workout ideas.

How does it work? The whole idea of the 90 Day SSS plan is to fuel your body in the correct way and eat in line with your energy demands, which means eating differently on training days and rest days. Carbohydrates are used to refuel after exercise and fats are used as steady fuel for the remainder of the day, night, and on rest days. A training day consists of two reduced carbohydrate meals and one post-workout carb-refuel meal and two snacks, whereas a rest day

78 SIXER MAGAZINE

@SixerRMC

includes three reduced-carb meals and two snacks.

Steps to success Some of Joe’s top tips to succeed on this plan are: Plan – life will undoubtedly get in the way and you may not be able to follow the plan 100 per cent, but by planning meals and workouts for the week ahead you can minimise poor decisions – like ordering a 12-inch pizza because there’s nothing in the fridge (we’ve all been there). Writing down a meal plan will help you when you are out food shopping too and, most importantly, keep it realistic – if you can only manage to fit in three workouts then only include three in your plan. Prep – spend a couple of hours in the kitchen each weekend prepping meals for the week ahead. By cooking everything yourself you will know exactly what has gone into each meal and many of Joe’s recipes are freezer-friendly, meaning you can batch cook and then you don’t have to worry about faffing around making dinner when you’re tired after a workout. Stock up on essentials – if you aren’t big on home cooking, you need to invest in some much-needed tools and ingredients. Think food scales for portion control, containers to store your meals for the week, a decent wok/pan, and a refillable water bottle to make sure you stay hydrated.

SIXEROUGHTIBRIDGE GALA Words: Phoebe Seymour Photography: Richard Hall

LIFE’S A BEACH! Bring your bucket and spade – there’ll be lots of fun for everyone at Oughtibridge-by-Sea.

T

his summer you needn’t travel all the way to the seaside because Oughtibridge Gala is bringing the beach to you. Summer galas have been an important annual event on Oughtibridge’s social calendar since 1972, but it is believed the tradition goes back much further to a hospital fundraiser festival nearly 100 years ago. Taking place at Coronation Park on Saturday 25 June, this year’s event promises to be bigger and more ambitious than ever with the village’s first ever ‘gala by the sea’. “There will be sand, buckets, spades and even a flock of seagulls – string vests and hankies are optional,” says committee member and co-organiser Sandra Walton. “There’ll be plenty of traditional entertainment for everyone such as a coconut shy, a beach scene photograph board, three-card bingo, a tombola, face painting, and an old-fashioned Test Your Strength machine.” As usual, the gala will kick off with a colourful parade through the village. Led by 2016 gala princess Katie and the Oughtibridge Brass Band, the local Rainbow and Brownie groups will be embracing this year’s theme with beach-inspired decorations such as sand castles, ice creams and deck chairs, and sea-side fancy dress. Once in the park, there’ll be plenty more entertainment including performances from local dance group Branching Out and Phoenix Gymnastics, and music by local bands Lost Control, Bailey Street and the Oughtibridge Training band. Children’s

entertainer and magician Barney Baloney will also be showing off his magical skills. For foodies there’ll be pizzas made by Chef on a Bike, teas and coffee, cakes (including gluten-free), burgers, candy floss and of course, ice creams by Granelli’s. If you are feeling adventurous, join the Sheffield canoe club for a paddle in the river, take the river challenge, or enter the raffle to be in with a chance of winning a £200 voucher for Go Outdoors to spend on your own adventure. Other prizes include a £100 cash prize and a case of wine from Le Bon Vin. There will also be plenty of competitions to enter from the wacky Oughti’s-Knobbly-Knees competition to creative baking, gardening and arts competitions. And, after an

overwhelming 123 entries last year, the Oughtibridge dog show, Scrufts, is back. Hosted by Emma Shepherd of Oscar pet food and Sharon and Mark of Impawtant Friends dog walking services, Scrufts will put local pets through their paces with six categories to enter including prettiest girl, most handsome boy, best pup under one year and best veteran over ten, followed by a parade around the main arena. First place dogs will win an Oscar starter pack including glutenfree dog food, treats and a storage bucket. Second and third runners up will receive goody bags. All you have to do is come down in the morning to fill in a form and pay a £1 fee to enter. Councillor Matt Dickson’s labrador Shadow came second last year and enjoyed himself so much, he is back to judge this year’s hopefuls. “I was blown away by last year’s show,” says Emma. “We didn’t expect so many people to apply. It was really successful so we expect there’ll be even more entries this year. “It’s all a bit of fun and a great chance for us to meet our customers, welcome new ones and to support a fantastic local event. The gala is a chance for locals to work together and everyone is welcome to get involved. It’s great, it’s getting huge!” Between 2,000 and 3,000 people are expected to attend the gala and, as usual, all the money made on the day will be split between worthy local causes and charities. Over the past five years, the gala has raised approximately £17,500. Last year, they raised £3,000 which was split between the Luncheon Club, the Brownies, the Rainbows, the Beavers, the Guides, the Cubs, Oughtibridge Parish Church, the Oughtibridge Wesleyan Reform Chapel and Oughtibridge Zion Chapel. The annual Sports Night has also become a local tradition in recent years. Taking place before the gala on Wednesday 15 June, the evening will give running enthusiasts a chance to compete in The Tom Holmes Gala Chase and Hill Climb Race in association with Penistone Footpath Runners. With so much to see and do before and on the day, this year’s gala is not to be missed. “It’s a traditional, fun and vibrant family friendly event which absolutely shouts summer time,” says Sandra. “We’re looking forward to the beach theme and there are plenty of things for everyone to explore, eat and do. All we’re praying for now is the weather!” For more information or to apply for funding from the Oughtibridge Gala Events & Donations Charity for your local group or cause, visit www.oughtibridgegala.co.uk.

When it comes to choosing a plumber, however, experience may be one thing to consider, but reliability and quality of service are two elements that are far more important. You might only rarely need a plumber, but when you do, it is most likely in an emergency, so you need someone who will act fast and provide the best service possible at a fair price. That’s exactly what Worrall plumber Ben Nettleton offers the people of South Yorkshire. When Ben left school, he started to train as an engineer but found that he preferred a much more hands-on approach to learning. He developed an interest in plumbing after helping his father, a landlord, with jobs in his properties. It was this that spurred him on to train at Sheffield College as a plumber. Ben completed an apprenticeship, training with other plumbing professionals and gaining invaluable experience. Now, with the right qualifications, knowledge and experience behind him, Ben has started his own company, Nettleton Plumbing, providing a professional, personal service. He said: “The benefit of being your own boss is that you don’t have to rely on anyone else. I can make sure that each job is completed to the highest standard.” Ben covers all aspect of plumbing including bathroom fittings, repairs and call-outs, and is currently training to become Gas Safe Registered – he is working with Stuart

Charlesworth, who is a Gas Safe Registered, to gain experience in gas safety. When it comes to fitting bathrooms, Ben has three reliable suppliers he uses for products – Easy Bathroom, James Hargreaves and Screw Fix. He even makes sure any price discounts he receives are passed on to his customers. “I enjoy fitting bathrooms because it can completely transform a room and make something more convenient for a homeowner,” said Ben. “There’s nothing more rewarding than seeing a satisfied customer.” As well as plumbing, Ben has become something of a handyman so if you need any light fittings or doors handles changing, he is your go-to guy. He said: “If I can’t do something, I will learn how to, or can recommend another reliable tradesperson who I know will be able to help.” This impressive work ethic means Ben goes above and beyond to make sure his customers are happy with his work and this is one reason why he gains many of his clients through personal recommendation. BITS & PIECES Kaye’s charity sky dive As Friday 13 May approached, most of us started to think about the superstitions that go along with the ominous date, but not for Kaye Orwin, area manager at MorfittSmith estate agents. Kaye bravely decided that she would willingly throw herself from a plane, freefalling from 15,000 ft, and all in the name of fundraising for HallamFM’s Charity Cash for Kids. “It was a fantastic experience and I raised over £1,000 for Cash For Kids,” said Kaye. “But I’ll be keeping my feet firmly on the ground and concentrating on selling houses for the moment.” For more information on Cash For Kids, visit www.hallamfm.co.uk/charity.

Welcome To My Office – Views from the roofs Simon Slater of Slater’s Aerial Services has a different ‘office view’ to most of us – a rooftop vista of Sheffield. But can you guess exactly where in the S6 postcode area he was when he took these photographs? To find out, follow @SlatersAerials and @SixerRMC on Twitter – the answer will be revealed at the end of the month. Congratulations to those of you who guessed where Simon was in last month’s pictures – Loxley Road towards Nag’s Head Inn.

Worrall Dance School on the big stage Congratulations to Dance Dynamique, who wowed crowds with their first full scale production at The Library Theatre in Sheffield. The dance school based at Worrall Memorial Hall opened five years ago, and with plans to expand into Bradfield School, is going from strength to strength. “I am immensely proud of my students,” said dance teacher Fiona. “I want to congratulate them on all their hard work and dedication. “We have 80 students coming to classes each week and we are gradually becoming a real community base - especially for local teenagers. I really want to show the community how amazing all the local children are!” Dance Dynamique offers a wide range of classes from street dance, to tap, to theatre craft. Their Musical Theatre class for ages five to eight has been a huge success. For more details, visit www.dancedynamique.co.uk.
