Enjoy your conservatory all year round SAGARS’ REVOLUTIONARY 365 CONSERVATORY ROOF INSULATION SYSTEM KEEPS CONSERVATORIES WARM IN WINTER AND COOL IN SUMMER. onservatories have long been a desirable addition to the home but too often become neglected parts of the house if they’re too cold in winter and too hot in summer. But what if that could change? Using the revolutionary 365 insulation system, originally believed to have been inspired by NASA, Sagars 365 can transform your conservatory and make it into a room you can use 365 days a year. According to a Survey carried out by the Department of Energy and Climate Change, the average conservatory owner uses an extra 4,800 kWh per annum. Which at 15.5p pkw equates to £744 per year! The insulation is built up of complex layers of aluminium foil and insulation that is perfect for insulating conservatory roofs, reducing heat loss by about 95 per cent and keeping the heat out in summer. It’s finished with brilliant white tongue and groove insulated pvc panels to give a maintenance-free bright appearance. Using the 365 insulation system, Sagars, a family-based Yorkshire company, have been turning hundreds of draughty unused conservatories into rooms that can be used for any purpose, all year round. VAT is charged at five per cent as this type of insulation comes under the government’s energy savings rate. All work is completed in a day, following government social distancing guidelines to keep everyone safe. And it costs less than you would think - prices include fitting,VAT, and a 10 year guarantee. With 25% off for a limited time, the cost of a typical 3x3m conservatory is just £1,699. Don't miss out, call us for a quote today! Interest free credit available over 10 months (subject to approval). Open Monday to Friday 9am-5pm.

TRUSTPILOT FIVE-STAR REVIEWS: “What can I say apart from excellent. They arrived on time, did an excellent job, when finished left it as clean and tidy as it was when they arrived. It looks really good, very pleased and impressed with the quality of the work. Can’t believe how warm it is already. If you are thinking about it like I was, just get it done, you won’t regret it. Will definitely recommend.” Dawn, 5 January 2021 “Great company to do business with. Had my conservatory clad and now it’s a cosy functioning space. The two guys who attended were really nice and just got on with it and cleaned up after themselves. Great price too. Would definitely recommend.” Elaine, 8 January 2021 For more reviews, please search Trustpilot.

The countdown has begun... NOW THE FIRST ACTS HAVE BEEN ANNOUNCED, THE RETURN OF TRAMLINES EDGES EVER CLOSER. ow does spending a weekend in a sun-drenched park listening to some of your favourite bands, drinking craft beers and eating superlative street food sound? It’s something that’s seemed like a pipe dream for so long but, thankfully, this summer looks like making that dream a reality with the return of Tramlines to

H

Sheffield’s Hillsborough Park. Taking place over the weekend of 2325 July, the festival has named its first wave of acts – with many to follow. Headliners have been revealed as The Streets, Royal Blood and Richard Ashcroft who will be supported by over 40 more acts including The Kooks, DMA’s, Pale Waves, Little Simz, The

Pigeon Detectives, Sophie Ellis-Bextor, Mahalia, Everything Everything, Jake Bugg, Blossoms, The Sherlocks, Dizzee Rascal, Tom Walker, The Fratellis, Sundara Karma and more. Tramlines 2021 takes place after the first ever sell out event in 2019 and an unplanned hiatus in 2020. Since humble beginnings in 2009 when Tramlines

MUSIC

launched as a free, multi-venue, innercity festival, Tramlines is now a firm fixture on the UK festival circuit receiving many accolades including the UK Festival Award for Best Metropolitan Festival in 2019 and 2011. In keeping with the last two events, Tramlines Festival 2021 takes place in one greenfield site, Hillsborough Park, just a few miles North West of Sheffield city centre and will feature five stages of music, comedy, performance, art, and handpicked food and craft ales. The Friday night headliner on ‘Sarah Nulty’s Main Stage’ will be The Streets whose enigmatic frontman, Mike Skinner has performed exclusive DJ sets for

>

Tramlines in the past but performs live for the first time providing a perfect start to the weekend’s festivities. Brit Award winning rock duo, Royal Blood are the Saturday headliners, hot on the heels of their third LP, ‘Typhoons’ whilst former Verve frontman, Richard Ashcroft takes the prestigious Sunday night slot. Tramlines Festival Operations Director, Timm Cleasby said: “The pandemic has hit us all very hard in a million different ways but the support that Sheffield has already shown us is incredibly humbling for us all. We’re super excited to bring you what I feel is one of our strongest line ups. The three main headliners have been on my list for a good while now and we’ve got some brilliant returning friends as well. All this said, we’re very serious about the public’s safety and take our responsibilities regarding COVID very seriously. We’re keeping a close eye on developments and will act accordingly should things change.” The 2021 lineup for Tramlines is packed with some of the UK’s all-time rock and indie favourites. Appearing are poster boys of the noughties indie wave scene, The Kooks, ‘Chelsea Dagger’ indie swingers The Fratellis, the platinum selling The Pigeon Detectives, and Blossoms who were inspired by Manchester’s indie rock movement. Also appearing will be The Snuts who’s debut indie rock LP, ‘W.L.’ was launched in April 2021 and shot straight to number 1 in the charts. Adding an international injection to the rock offering are, from Sydney down under, the DMA’s who’ll bring rock ballads aplenty. Also on the bill is platinum selling artist Sophie Elliswww.rmcmedia.co.uk 15

Bextor and neo soul empress, Mahalia. Dizzee Rascal is back in 2021. The ‘Bonkers’ artist performed an electrifying set for Tramlines in Ponderosa Park back in 2015, regarded by many as one of the best Tramlines shows from over a decade of events. Also taking to the mic over the weekend is Little Simz, a furiously talented rapper hotly tipped by Dizzee, whose trademark uncompromising style will light up the stage on Saturday. As ever, Tramlines welcomes a slew of talent from across its home city and the Yorkshire regions. The ever popular fourpiece The Sherlocks join the bill whose impressive credits include being the first unsigned band after the Arctic Monkeys to sell out the legendary independent venue, the Leadmill. The ever-cherished singer and songwriter Lucy Spraggan who’ll deliver her folk pop signature 16 www.rmcmedia.co.uk

style as seen on album number five released in 2019 and on her recent quirky cover of The Proclaimers ‘500 Miles’. This comes alongside the heavy, fast-paced indie sounds of The Reytons, the loud punk sounds of The Blinders, and Sheffield favourites the Everly Pregnant Brothers renowned for their amusing spoof numbers. Other local and upcoming acts include Biig Piig, Before Breakfast and Bloxx. This is just the first wave of talent set to perform at Tramlines 2021. Festivalgoers should keep an eye out for further lineup announcements, plus further announcements from across the festival site including, comedy and cabaret entertainment, fabulous food and drink offerings and much much more. Tramlines Festival will be working closely with the local authorities and

following all the latest government guidance. If for any reason the festival is not able to take place then in keeping with 2020, ticket buyers will have the option to retain their ticket for next year’s event or receive a face value refund on their purchase prices. Denim for Dementia Residents and staff at Belmont House Care & Nursing Home in Stocksbridge swapped their uniforms and regular clothing for a day of denim wearing in support of Alzheimer’s Society. As part of Denim for Dementia day on Friday 21 May, everyone was encouraged to wear denim in exchange for a donation to Alzheimer’s Society. Staff held a bake sale courtesy of Housekeeper Dominique who baked all the cakes to sell. The proceeds of the sale were donated to Alzheimer’s Society and residents had a great time enjoying their delicious home-baked treats. Denim for Dementia day takes place during Alzheimer’s Society’s annual Dementia Action Week. Led by Alzheimer’s Society, Dementia Action Week is a national event that encourages the public to come together to take action to improve the lives of people affected by dementia. “We see the impact of dementia on people and their families every day at Belmont House,” said Home Manager Joanne Coldwell. “We are passionate about supporting people living with dementia to have the best quality of life possible for as long as possible. We are always keen to raise awareness both inside and outside our homes. Denim for Dementia is a simple but effective way that anyone can get involved.” Research shows there are more than 850,000 people in the UK who are living with dementia. One in 14 people over the age of 65 have dementia, and the condition affects 1 in 6 people over 80. As people live longer the number of people with dementia is increasing. It is estimated that by 2040, the number of people living with dementia in the UK will be 1.6 million. Families and friends are being encouraged to support the campaign by donating directly to Alzheimer’s Society here: https://secure.alzheimers.org.uk/denim-for-dementia/

Hitting the heights Why visit the Himalayas to conquer the world’s highest peak when you can take up the challenge with a trip out to the Peak District? Builder and fell runner Jack Swindells raised £899 for St Luke’s Hospice when he reached the equivalent of 29,200 feet in just one night - more than the 29,032 foot height of Mount Everest. But Jack completed his challenge by running up and down Winn Hill near Bamford in Derbyshire an incredible 29 times, supported by friends who kept him going through the dark. He took on the daunting task to raise money for St Luke’s Hospice, where friend and fellow runner Tom Pollak was a patient as he battled against cancer. Tom was the longest serving soldier in the Parachute Regiment, who then went on to have a successful career as a GP in Sheffield. He was also a successful mountain climber and mountain marathoner and encouraged and supported Jack in his running. “Winn Hill was Tom’s favourite spot so it seemed like the right place to do it,” said Jack, who lives with his family in Worrall. “He created a running group and introduced us all to running up and down Winn Hill. “My original intention was to start at five in the morning but then I decided to do it overnight while the family was asleep. “It was a good experience but I was quite relieved by the time I got to the final five ascents - it was a mix of being a bit fed up, tired and relieved but I am very pleased to have raised so much money for the charity that supported Tom.” There’s still time to support Jack’s fundraising. War bride birthday A wartime romance brought Hetty Hempshall across the Atlantic Ocean to Sheffield. But as she celebrates her 106th birthday at Sheffcare’s Midhurst Residential Care Home, there’s no doubting the fact that she’s now a proper Sheffield lass! Hetty is originally from St John’s in the Canadian province of Newfoundland, but when the war brought the Royal Navy to town, she met husband John and, when the conflict ended in 1945, she returned with him to his home in South Yorkshire. John was killed in a work accident at the age of 42 and Hetty never married again, bringing up her son and three daughters alone and working for several years at the Bassett’s sweet factory and then as a cook at Graham Shaw’s cafe in Sheffield’s Castle Market. Today she has seven grandchildren and four great grandchildren, who joined the Midhurst team in wishing Hetty a very happy 106th birthday. 30 www.rmcmedia.co.uk

WEDDINGS

Three, two, one... THE COUNTDOWN TO YOUR WEDDING BEGINS NOW... KATERINA VYURKOVA LOOKS AT THOSE LAST-MINUTE THINGS THAT ENSURE YOUR DAY RUNS SMOOTHLY.

Three months before: Try and sort out all the legalities straight away. In England and Wales, you need to notify the register office or the priest at least 28 days in advance. After you’ve sorted that out, it’s time to seriously think about your guest list, because the total number of your closest friends and family could either be 10 or 300. Depending on the number that comes out on your list, the next largest point to tick off from your to-do list is the venue. Over 11,300 government-approved venues are patiently waiting for you to pick from, so better start thinking early about what kind of weather will be on your planned day, as soaking under the rain in the middle of a breathtaking field may be the last thing you would want. Don’t forget about figuring out the venue for the postceremonial party, and some thorough researching can land you with just one location for both the party and the ceremony. Once that’s done, it’s time to move onto the theme, which can be as unique as your heart desires. It is also the perfect time to start thinking about the colour theme for the bridesmaids’ dresses to avoid choosing their least favourite colours. Also, remember to take care of the entertainment, as it might take a bit longer than you expect to decide what heart-throbbing song you want to sway to with your loved one and what music you want your guests to dance to. As you’ve already begun thinking about the theme, it also won’t hurt to start dealing with all the menus and decorations from the very start. Photographers and videographers should also be taken care of as soon as possible, as you never know how busy they are with running between weddings.

Two months before: Would you like an edible mini sculpture of a bride and a groom romantically holding hands on top of a strawberrydecorated chocolate sponge cake? If yes, then the sooner you deal with the wedding cake, the better. The next couple of months will be filled with careful planning of the tiniest details, which can be as small as booking a florist to get an aromatic bouquet to throw to the bridesmaids. The honeymoon arrangements that will take you and your soulmate onto a paradise adventure might also take a while to decide on. Finally, for your hen and stag parties to be unforgettable in the positive sense of the word, it is better to avoid planning them in the very last moment. Other important aspects such as finding the perfect wedding rings, organising gifts for the helpful guests and calling up those who have not yet responded to invitations should also be taken care of a couple of months in advance. 38 www.rmcmedia.co.uk

One month before: The next 30 days will be spent ensuring that everything runs absolutely smoothly on the special day. Questions like ‘What time does everything start and end?’, ‘What time should the taxi pick us up and how many taxis should there be?’, ‘Do we want a limousine instead?’, ‘What does the on-the-day timetable look like?’ should all be answered in the last month before the wedding day. It’s also time to draw up a sitting plan for all the guests.

Two weeks before: ‘Something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue’ is a sweet tradition that can be followed not only by the bride, but also by the groom to make sure that nothing can go wrong in your marriage by pleasing the superstition that is as old as time. The scheduled date for your hen and stag parties should also take place somewhere around this time just in case they are days-long vacations, as you will have to use all the time you can to look fresh for the wedding day once all the partying will come to an end.

One day before: The next day will be all about you, and you will get to see all the preparations paying off.The best thing to do now is to relax your mind and body by taking a long bath and getting a good night’s rest even if your heart is pounding and you find it hard to fall asleep. Lastly, it’s time to acknowledge the pleasant fact that the great day has finally arrived and it is no longer just a dream.

Classic choice LEARN MORE ABOUT PEARLS, COURTESY OF PA JEWELLERY. earls are a classic jewellery choice, the birthstone for June and the gift of choice for 30th wedding anniversaries. When choosing them you will probably notice that prices vary quite considerably, and it is not always immediately obvious why, so here are some of the features to look out for. Firstly, freshwater cultured pearls generally cost less than saltwater cultured pearls. One reason for this is that multiple freshwater pearls may be grown at the same time in the same mussel whereas saltwater cultured pearls can only be grown singly. You can learn more about this in our blog, ‘Pearls: A Cultured Choice’ on our website. Pearls come in a surprisingly wide range of shades: like going to a DIY store and finding an entire shelf of cream paints! They have a body colour and secondary overtones: white may err towards yellowish or pinkish while black pearls will often have strong overtones of purple or green. Some pearls may display a characteristic iridescent effect called orient with shimmering colours appearing to float across the surface; this can be very attractive. The most desirable shape for a pearl is perfectly round. However, off-round to

P

42 www.rmcmedia.co.uk

button shapes are popular for stud earrings as they sit neatly, while symmetrical drop-shaped pearls are perfect for earrings or pendants. Increasingly unusual, baroque shapes can give a more relaxed look; they make a good choice if you want a less formal necklace. A perfectly smooth surface is preferable, but most pearls will have blemishes of some kind. These can range from tiny indentations to significant ridges affecting the overall shape. Minor blemishes can be hidden by placing a drill hole or setting in the correct position, while major ridges or chips can be

more problematic and decrease desirability and value considerably. Pearls have a lustre that is aptly described as ‘pearly’, but it can still vary. A brighter, more reflective lustre is associated with thicker nacre layers and smoother surface. If the pearl looks dull this can be because the nacre is quite thin which can also reduce durability. Matching gemstones that have so many variables is not straightforward, but it can make a big difference to a finished piece. In addition to ensuring the colour and lustre match, it is important to have pearls of the same size and shape for a smooth look around a necklace or balance within a pair of earrings. If you are trying to match existing pieces, it is important to bring them with you so that a match, especially for colour, may be found. Cecil Beaton, The Bright Young Things at Wilsford, 1927. © The Cecil Beaton Studio Archive

Exhibition Cecil Beaton’s Bright Young Things Until 4 July Millennium Gallery www.museums-sheffield.org.uk Cecil Beaton’s glittering portraits from a golden age are brought together at the Sheffield’s Millennium Gallery this spring in a major new exhibition direct from the National Portrait Gallery, London. Bright Young Things presents a dazzling leading cast of society figures, artists, writers and partygoers, each seen through the prism of Beaton’s portraits. Featuring 150 works, many of which are 52 www.rmcmedia.co.uk

seldom exhibited, the images on display offer a joyous, playful spectacle of costumed theatricality and unbridled creativity. The exhibition in Sheffield, which comes after the pandemic sadly brought the original run in London to a close after just one week, is a rare opportunity to see these remarkable portraits together on such a scale. Beaton’s celebrated sitters, to many of whom he would become close, would help refine his photographic style throughout these early years – actors and anglophiles Tallulah Bankhead and Anna May Wong, writer Daphne du Maurier, glamorous socialites Edwina Mountbatten and Diana Guinness (née Mitford), artist and friend Stephen

Tennant, set and costume designer Oliver Messel, composer William Walton, modernist poets Iris Tree and Nancy Cunard, among many others. Brought to vivid life, each portrait has a remarkable story to tell. While some of the faces on display may be less well known, their stories are no less fascinating – those of style icons Paula Gellibrand, the Marquesa de Casa Maury and Baba, Princesse de FaucignyLucinge, the eccentric composer and aesthete Lord Berners, modernist poet Brian Howard, who was in part the inspiration for Brideshead Revisited’s Anthony Blanche, ballet dancer Tilly Losch and Dolly Wilde, Oscar’s equally flamboyant niece.

Back to the Roxy

A Quiet Place 2

26 June O2 Academy One of Sheffield’s most famous nightclubs returns for one night to celebrate the city’s first weekend of freedom. With a capacity in excess of 2,000, and one of the most jaw-dropping lightshows in the country, few venues were more high profile than the Roxy that reigned supreme in Sheffield in the 1980s and 1990s. The nightclub became famous nationally as one of the venues for the ‘Hitman & Her’ TV series. Everyone from Kylie Minogue to the London Boys performed there. Dirty Stop Out’s Neil Anderson that is helping organise the event said: “This really is the weekend we’ve been praying for since the first lockdown. Our ‘Back to The Roxy’ event really is set to be one of the biggest parties Sheffield has ever seen.” The reunion party is also set to raise hundreds for the region’s most needy kids through its support of Hallam FM’s Cash For Kids. The party is set to take place in the Roxy venue’s former Arundel Street home which is now the 02 Academy. Tickets are £10 and available from https://www.gigantic.com

4 June Following the events at home, the Abbott family now face the terrors of the outside world. Forced to venture into the unknown, they realise the creatures that hunt by sound are not the only threats lurking beyond the sand path. Emily Blunt returns in this sequel to the surprise 2018 hit.

TV Disney+ has the pick of new streaming content this month with the addition of Raya and the Last Dragon (4 June) to its regular listing and the launch of new Marvel TV series, Loki (11 June). The latter sees Tom Hiddlestone reprise his role as the Asgardian God of Mischief in events that follow Avengers: Endgame, resulting in a confrontation with the Time Variance Authority (TVA). Owen Wilson also stars. Across on Amazon Prime, their popular All or Nothing series turns its attention to the New Zealand All Blacks (1 June).

Luca 18 June Disney Pixar’s latest adventure take us to the Italian Riviera, where an unlikely but strong friendship grows between a human being and a sea monster disguised as a human. Jacob Tremblay, Jack Dylan Grazer and Maya Rudolph lend their voices.

In The Heights 18 June Musical lovers can marvel at this feature version of the Broadway musical in which a bodega owner has mixed feelings about closing his store and retiring to the Dominican Republic are inheriting his grandmother’s fortune. It stars Anthony Ramos, Corey Hawkins and Leslie Grace.

Theatre Dangerous Liaisons 15-19 June / Lyceum www.sheffieldtheatres.co.uk A story of sexual power, cruelty and deceit. In 18th century France, letters fly between the mansions of two bored aristocrats as they spin a web of heartbreak and ruin. It might seem like a game, but lives will be ruined and love irrevocably lost. From the original scandalous novel, the acclaimed film starring John Malkovich and Michelle Pfeiffer and iconic retelling Cruel Intentions, this dangerous story has been thrilling audiences for over 200 years. Now Northern Ballet bring their bodiceripping adaptation back to the stage. Performed with minimal set and full costumes, the ballet is set to Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons, played live by Northern Ballet Sinfonia.

Friendsical 22-23 June / Sheffield City Hall www.sheffieldcityhall.co.uk Friendsical is an original and unique new parody musical inspired by the gang in ‘Friends’, the iconic TV show. When Ross’s wife leaves him for another woman, he fears he will never find love again. But then Rachel runs

back into his life… will he end up with his one true love? With original new songs such as ‘(He’s her) Lobster!’, ‘Richard’s Moustache’ and ‘You’re Over Me, When Were You Under Me?’, the gang take on naked Thursdays, a power cut, and a dinosaur convention!

Chicago 22-26 June / Lyceum www.sheffieldtheatres.co.uk Set amidst the razzle-dazzle decadence of the 1920s, Chicago is the story of Roxie Hart, a housewife and nightclub dancer who murders her on-the-side lover after he threatens to walk out on her. Desperate to avoid conviction, she dupes the public, the media and her rival cellmate,Velma Kelly, by hiring Chicago’s slickest criminal lawyer to transform her malicious crime into a barrage of sensational headlines, the likes of which might just as easily be ripped from today’s tabloids. Created by the musical theatre talents of John Kander, Fred Ebb and legendary choreographer Bob Fosse, Chicago’s sexy, sassy score with one show-stopping song after another includes “Razzle Dazzle”, “Cell Block Tango”, and “All That Jazz”. www.rmcmedia.co.uk 53

here’s something cosy and comforting about those charming tins of boiled fruit sweets that have played an essential part in so many of our adventures, from family day trips to the coast to long-haul flights to the other side of the world. But when Leslie Simpkin returned to his Sheffield home from the First World War with the germ of an idea to produce and sell glucose sweets, he immediately hit upon a recipe for success that has seen his family business thrive over the last 100 years. Simpkins Travel Sweets were first produced in 1921 and are still in demand all over the world, with loyal customers in 40 countries as far afield as Colombia, Japan, Australia, the USA and Malaysia. From its base in Hillsborough, Simpkins has remained strictly under family control and now a third generation is steering the ship with Adrian Simpkin and his sister Karen, grandchildren of Leslie, at the helm as joint managing directors. Ask Adrian about the secret of his family business’ long-standing success and he insists it’s all about the product. “It is solely that we make a bloody good sweet,” he says. “A lot of boiled sweets make your mouth sore but we use only the finest ingredients and the taste and texture is spot on.” No doubt satisfied customers across the globe would agree, but the Simpkins success story is also about innovation and a steady stream of smart business ideas that set them apart from their competitors.

T

made in sheffield In retrospect one of grandfather Leslie’s smartest moves from the outset was deciding not to take on the major sweet manufacturers, including near neighbours Bassetts, in fighting for shelf space in mainstream sweet shops and food halls. All Simpkins products contained glucose boiled sweets – more popularly known as barley sugars – and these were believed to help cure travel sickness. Glucose was also regarded as a medicinal product – Leslie had seen it being given to wounded soldiers when he was treated for shrapnel wounds. So the aim was to place Simpkins sweets in chemist shops, building up a market share while avoiding competition with larger manufacturers. Business boomed and within three years they had achieved 80 per cent coverage in the UK with 12,000 separate accounts. Today, distribution has increased to include railway stations, motorway services and airports, not only in the UK but worldwide. The key to success in foreign markets was the development of the travel tin, a relatively airtight canister that meant sweets did not go sticky too quickly in hot climates. Simpkins has been exporting for over 80 years, originally to the old Commonwealth countries. Then in the 1950s the invention of the

seamless can meant sweets could remain fresh for years. This handily coincided with the rise in trade overseas, particularly Japan. “They did not see a lot of European confectionary after World War Two. We sold very well, not only in Japan but throughout the Far East, and it became quite a status symbol to receive a tin of Simpkins sweets as a gift,” says Adrian. “And now they are becoming popular again with a new generation of Japanese kids. For them the appeal is retro.” Simpkins has never strayed from its home in Hillsborough, and it is from within this modest-looking business premises in the heart of S6 that a stream of bright ideas has helped keep the business afloat through good times and bad. Recent innovations included a new Botanicals range of sweets for venues like garden centres, and a special tin for the Royal British Legion. “We’re both 100 years old and it’s a cause very close to our hearts as there’s a strong military tradition in our family,” adds Adrian. Then there is the private label work for secondary brands. One recent deal was with another long-standing British sweet manufacturer, Taverners Tangerine Confectionary. Simpkins now manufacture all their travel tubs. There are also other sweet treats made by Simpkins such as the hugely successful Nipits range of liquorice pellets, which again come in a smartly designed tin. Popular with public speakers and choir members, they are said to clarify the voice and clear the throat.

Making the sweets at the Hillsborough factory

It all seems to point to a bright future, but Adrian is hoping the struggle to survive during the lockdown of the last 12 months is well and truly consigned to the history books. He recalls being stranded in the middle of an important marketing trip overseas: “In March last year I was in Tokyo for an exhibition. It was cancelled so I flew to Manilla and on to the Philippines for my next appointment. I went to bed and woke up to a lockdown. Australia was my next appointment but they announced quarantine so I had to come home “We tried to carry on with business as usual when the lockdown was

announced but a 16-week order book just vanished. We make travel sweets and suddenly travel just stopped and the airports, railway stations and motorway services were deserted.” So production had to be curtailed but they carried on with a skeleton staff, orders started coming back in early summer and they were able to bring staff back out of furlough. There are no big plans for a party or celebration to mark Simpkins’ centenary year but Adrian believes that having come through a very testing year the future looks bright. “We’ve survived recessions, pandemics and world wars… I think we are bullet proof.”

COMPETITION To celebrate 100 years of success, A.L. Simpkins & Co. of Sheffield are offering 12 tins of their distinctive and world famous travel sweets for a prize in our special competition. To win, simply visit www.rmcmedia.co.uk/comp etitions and answer the following question: In what year were Simpkins Travel Sweets first produced? Closing date 31 May. All correct entries will be entered into a prize draw and the winner will be notified by email.

MOTORING

MANY CAR COMPANIES ARE LOOKING AT HOW THEY CAN CHANGE FOR THE BETTER, WRITES RICHARD ABBEY.

Back in black The Jaguar I-PACE has achieved global recognition and won multiple awards for its outstanding design. Now, the all-electric performance SUV’s appeal is heightened still further by the creation of the I-PACE Black special editions. These exclusive new additions to the IPACE range benefit from an enhanced specification over the SE and HSE models on which they are based and includes the Black Pack, panoramic roof and privacy glass. The clean, contemporary look is accentuated by the gloss black finish of the 20-inch five-spoke wheels, and the IPACE Black models are available in the full range of colours and include metallic paints as standard. Like every model in the range, the I-PACE Black models offers a wealth of technology designed to make every journey simpler and more enjoyable. The Pivi Pro infotainment system is ready to go by the time you’re in the driving seat and is as intuitive to use as your smartphone. For example, the EV navigation can show if nearby charging stations are available or in use, the type of connector they have, what they cost, and how long it will take to charge. A 90kWh battery delivers 400PS and 696Nm of instant torque, enabling acceleration from 0-60mph in just 4.5 seconds. Prices start from £65,245.

Carbon-neutral goal As part of its Ambition 2039 initiative, Mercedes-Benz is working on offering a carbon-neutral new car fleet within 20 years from now. By as early as 2030, the company wants more than half the cars it sells to feature electric drive systems - this includes fully electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids. As a start to achieving this goal, the EQS is the first all-electric luxury saloon from Mercedes-EQ and is designed to be correspondingly sustainable. The vehicles are produced in a carbonneutral manner, and resource-saving materials such as carpets made from recycled yarn are used. MercedesBenz considers the entire value chain, from development and the supplier network to its own production. The first model on the market in the UK will be the EQS 450+ with 245 kW. The EQS can be charged with up to 200 kW at fast charging stations with direct current. Power for up to another 300 kilometres (WLTP) is recharged in just 15 minutes. At home or at public charging stations, the EQS can be conveniently charged with up to 22 kW with AC using the on-board charger.

Sport Venture A w-hole new ball game With more than 18 million units built, the Polo is one of the world’s most successful compact cars. Now,Volkswagen has unveiled its next evolutionary stage. The design, technologies and specification matrix of the bestseller have had a comprehensive update, as is immediately obvious when you see the vehicle’s new front and rear. And the range of standard equipment has been expanded significantly. On board every model you will now find: LED headlights and LED tail light clusters, the Digital Cockpit (digital instruments), an infotainment system and a multifunction steering wheel, among other things. In addition, the Polo now offers partly automated driving across its entire speed range thanks to the optional IQ.DRIVE Travel Assist system. This brings together the new predictive ACC (Adaptive Cruise Control) and Lane Assist – which now comes as standard in every Polo – to create a new assist system to achieve this. The range will include Life, Style and R-Line models. 64 www.rmcmedia.co.uk

The 2021 Mazda MX-5 range has been enhanced with the launch of the limited edition Sport Venture, which arrives in UK dealerships this month. Based on the 1.5-litre 132ps Sport Convertible, the £27,615 Sport Venture features a stand-out design that includes free-of-charge Deep Crystal Blue Mica paint matched to a grey fabric hood and silver door mirror trims. Drop the roof and the Sport Venture’s Light Stone Nappa leather and silver roll hoop trims further complement the Deep Crystal Blue paint, as do the 16inch bright alloy wheels. With just 160 examples of the Sport Venture coming to the UK this latest special edition follows that tradition.

Art collective ASIAN ARTISTS REPACKAGE ‘THE SUITCASE’ FOR WENTWORTH WOODHOUSE EXHIBITION. he private chapel at stately home Wentworth Woodhouse, just a short drive from north Sheffield, is welcoming back a thoughtprovoking exhibition by a Pakistani women’s art collective - which ended abruptly in the pandemic last year. Called The Suitcase, it marks the monumental life change of the first generation of Pakistani women who came to the area in the 1960s, telling their stories through the memories they carried with them in hearts and luggage. The exhibition ran for just two days before the UK went into its second national lockdown on 4 November, forcing the mansion to close. It captures the sight, smell, and feel of the Pakistani home through stories, poetry, visual images and video. Everyday objects the women brought with them will be on display; prayer mats, clay pots, bracelets and henna and photos of the family left behind, plus the letters that arrived from home as they navigated a new life. “We are thrilled that it is now safe to get our lives back on track and we can show our artwork again,” said Zanib Rasool MBE, a writer and poet, who makes up the Zanib Collective with Shaheen Shah, a visual artist, and oral historian Mariam Shah. The women have used their six-

month wait to ‘repack’ The Suitcase with added content. “We launched on 26 May with two beautiful wedding dresses we’ve tracked down. One is over 30 years old. Poems by famous Pakistani poets Faiz Ahmed Faiz and Moghammed Iqbal also feature,” said Zanib. Dr Suzanne Carter is helping Wentworth Woodhouse Preservation Trust develop community engagement plans alongside the regeneration of the Camellia House, Stables and Riding School. She saw the return of The Suitcase as an opportunity to have conversations with the area’s ethnically diverse communities about Wentworth Woodhouse. She explains: “The Trust is committed to making the site a heritage attraction of which all communities feel a sense of pride and connection. “With support from Rotherham Ethnic Alliance, we have organised group

visits and transport for some of Rotherham’s BAME communities to see The Suitcase, visit the gardens and state rooms and share their thoughts about how we can encourage a wider range of people to visit in the future. It’s really important that we have these conversations.” “Younger people will discover what the women in their families went through when they gave up everything to come to South Yorkshire,” says Zanib. “Older people’s memories will be stirred. “The suitcase and the objects on display hold a special place in our hearts and connect us to our mothers, our history and heritage.” The chapel inside the 18th century Grade I listed mansion became the backdrop for exhibitions in 2020 when the Preservation Trust linked with Rotherham Open Arts Renaissance project (ROAR). ROAR is an Arts Council funded National Portfolio Organisation which helps emerging local talent to find an audience and the chapel exhibitions are funded by WE Great Place project. It is free to visit The Suitcase, which runs Wednesday to Sunday 10am-1pm 26 May18 June, then transfers to Clifton Park Museum in Rotherham.Viewing is in timed slots which can be booked online at http://bit.ly/zanibcollective
