New tenants, Alan and Wendy McGilveray have given The Wortley Arms a new lease of life.

t’s been all change at The Wortley Arms in recent months with new owners, a new look and a new menu – and there’s much more to come. The new custodians of the former coach house, which dates back to 1753, are the McGilveray family, best known for running the eponymous restaurant at Fox Valley for

IHusband and wife, Alan and Wendy McGilveray, have a wealth of experience in the industry and have big plans for the Barnsley border.

The results of a four-week renovation are step through the listed revolving door is which instantly brightens the venue and is in-keeping with traditional features like the beamed ceilings and panelled walls.

Cream and sage-coloured walls bring a contemporary edge along with new patterned curtains, chairs and banquette seating.

“We’ve been respectful of the original features and tried to bring ‘Wortley’ into the décor,” said Alan. “We’ve had lots of lovely compliments from customers who love the new look, including from our landlady, Lady Rowena, who loves what we’ve done.”

Alan and Wendy had high praise for their contractors who helped to transform the pub and would like to thank Matt at Squareline Developments, Rob and Steph at Floor Angels and decorator Chris and Ben Peat.

“They were fantastic and completely took on board everything we wanted to do,” added Alan. “The building has got so much character and I’d like to think we’ve brought the love back.”

Behind the scenes, the McGilverays have installed new drainage outside as well as upgraded some of the seating and also completely upgraded the kitchen. Alan and Wendy brought three of their chefs from Fox Valley – Mark, Tony and Alan – and retained a further three who were already at the Wortley – Jamie, Ash and Luke. They are sometimes joined in the kitchen by Alan who trained as a chef and worked for Marriott Hotels for 25 years before moving into development and consultancy before opening his own restaurant.

Front of house, staff have been integrated from both venues and Alan has installed a new computer and reservation system.

McGilverays at The Wortley Arms – as it’s now known – can accommodate 70 diners between the tap room, lounge and snug downstairs and serves three different menus.

Brunch is served until 3pm and includes dishes such as the Big McG breakfast, beets and avo, and French toast. There’s also toasted sandwiches, salads, pub classics dishes.

After 3pm the main menu comes into effect and features dishes such as Wortley Farm 10oz sirloin, Derbyshire Dale pies and baked BBQ pork belly. There’s also a good selection of sharing platters, side dishes and delicious-sounding desserts – the Knickerbocker Glory and. McG winners.

Sundays are focused on traditional lunches and are already proving to be a big hit with diners.

“I’d characterise our food as traditional and home-cooked and we’re passionate about using local produce and local

suppliers,” said Alan. “Our main menu is complemented by a specials board which so far has featured dishes such as lobster thermidor, baked halibut and local lamb.”

The McGilverays have upgraded the bar, installing new Heineken pumps, and serve a selection of draught cask and keg beers, including Heineken 0.0. There’s also a carefully-curated wine list, courtesy of Hattersley Wines, and an extensive gin and spirits range too.

The Wortley Arms has a large upstairs with two good-size function rooms, one of which has its own bar, and a boardroom, which can be used for meetings or even as a private dining room.

“We see real potential with these upstairs rooms and as well as offering them for parties and celebrations we will soon be introducing afternoon teas, which will be served in their own dedicated room,”

explained Alan. “These rooms give us something extra and are the perfect complement to the bar and restaurant downstairs.”

The Wortley Arms has always had a touch of class, attracting diners from all latest upgrades have further enhanced that reputation. It’s the perfect spot for brunch, dinner or a celebration.

In our ‘Spring Dining Guide’ in Sixer last month, we looked at local pubs and restaurants that really come into their own during their summer months. We’re talking ones with great outdoor spaces that are just perfect for soaking up the sun and enjoying a drink or something to eat.

Walkley Cottage, which has a huge lawned beer garden to the rear that is a real suntrap, as well as a few tables to the front. Both were already busy on a balmy Sunday afternoon so we took respite in the cooler, contemporarily-decorated inside.

Friday tickets for Tramlines have sold out so the only way to catch Paolo Nutini, Bombay Bicycle Club and Sophie Ellis Bextor is to bag yourself a weekend ticket for £130+booking fee with monthly payment options available. A very limited number of Weekend Tier 3 tickets remain so the advice is to be quick to get the best possible price. Saturday and Sunday tickets are also selling fast but remain on sale from £45 and £55+booking fee respectively. All tickets can be purchased from www.tramlines.org.uk/tickets
