SIXERDO YOU REMEMBER? ere is a cheerful image to remind us that while winter drags along, summer days and summer sports are not so far away. If you recognise the cricket team or any of the members, do let us know. Last month’s photo was supplied by Barry Couldwell and certainly rang a bell with Sixer reader Joe Castle. He recalls the houses concerned on regular perambulations between Wadsley and Worrall. He believes they were demolished in the 1960s. Joe adds: “They were called Brick Row, though another name given them was the Langhouse Cottages, on account of the fact that close to the end of Wadsley Common and on the opposite side of the road stood the Langhouse where, at the beginning of the 20th century, lived members of the Bramall family, who had a ganister refining works nearby.”

PROMOTIONCOLLECTIVE LEGAL SOLUTIONS
Plans for a Care Fees Cap “abandoned”… Here are five things you need to know about care fees funding. April 2016 should have seen the most significant changes in a generation to the law relating to the provision of social care, with the introduction of the second part of the Care Act 2014*. Here’s five things you need to know: 1) The Personal Expense Allowance – when an individual requires care and is means tested, the first thing to be taken to fund their care is their income. All an individual’s means testable income will be taken to fund their care, with just £24.40 per week (the Personal Expense Allowance) being left untouched… 2) The means test – this will be conducted by the relevant Local Authority when an individual needs to access care. The means test is an assessment of an individual’s assets (income, property, savings etc) to ascertain whether they should be funding their care themselves. The means test thresholds for capital assets were due to change in April 2016 but have now been “delayed” until 2020 so remain as follows: i) Assets less than £14,250 = your care will be funded in full by your Local Authority ii) Assets more than £23,250 = you will have to cover the cost of your care in full iii) Assets between £14,250 and £23,250 = you will have to make a contribution towards the cost of your care, which could be a very significant sum 3) The “funding cap” was also due to be introduced in April 2016. It was intended to limit the amount an individual will be required to pay towards their care at £72,000, but again that has been delayed to 2020 so there is currently still no cap in place. 4) Deferred Payment Agreements don’t mean you no longer have to sell your home to fund your care. Initial statements by Government ministers suggested there would be no need for anyone to sell their home to fund their care. However, the legislation actually introduces a nationwide scheme, called Deferred Payment Agreements, which could mean your home doesn’t need to be sold during your lifetime, but still could be sold after your death. Clearly there is a big difference.
You need to take advice if… • You or your spouse/partner don’t yet have a Will. • You have a Will but it leaves everything to your spouse/partner. • You don’t have both kinds of Lasting Powers of Attorney set up. • You or your spouse/partner don’t have a pre-paid Funeral Plan. • You are divorced or widowed. • You have children. • You are concerned about what will happen and covering the costs if you need long term residential care.
5) Plan ahead – perhaps of most significance, you can opt to plan ahead and protect what you’ve worked hard for. Using a Trust, created under the terms of your Will or during your lifetime, can help protect your home and savings for future generations. However, for this planning to be effective, it must be done at a time when you are fit and healthy. Using the right Trust for your personal circumstances and objectives is vital, so taking advice from a specialist is an important first step. You can take the first step by calling Collective Legal Solutions on 0114 288 1104 and requesting more information.

PROMOTIONKINDER BOUTIQUE
Check out Kinder Boutique’s range of gorgeous clothes to keep your little ones cute, comfortable and stylish. inder Boutique opened just off Middlewood Road a little more than six months ago, but this baby and children’s clothing store has proved so popular that new customers are quickly becoming firm regulars. And, with neatly displayed exclusive products, a gorgeous variety of garments and accessories for both boys and girls, and owner Jill Hogg on hand to offer advice or help should you need it, it’s easy to see why. It’s an especially exciting time to visit the store as new spring/summer stock is now available, along with two brands, which are new to the store. If its quality children’s shoes and boots you’re searching for, Huntley’s range is ideal. This Southampton-based designer offers a unique and modern collection for boys and girls, available from size infant one to junior 13. They use 100 per cent finest quality leather across the entire range and their shoes have cushioned arch supports to help aid the child’s natural foot growth, as well as full soft leather lining for extra support. With a strong focus on safety and comfort for the child, all of their shoes have full non-slip soles, helping to keep children firmly on their feet. The other latest addition is Pan con Chocolate, a Spanish designer, offering a really beautiful, highquality colourful collection, with delicate lace detailing on many of the girls dresses. Kinder Boutique has a wide range of brands including Sarah Louise and Dani, which offers the finest fabrics and utilises the skills of the most innovative and imaginative designers and bespoke hand embroiderers to create classic quality pieces. This designer has always been a favourite of Jill’s who says: “My son, who is 29 had a Sarah Louise christening suit and many of my daughter’s dresses were Sarah Louise.” As well as many classic designs and smocks, the brand also includes more contemporary designs. Tutto Piccolo is another firm favourite at Kinder Boutique. This classically Spanish designer has rightly earned its place as a leading brand with traditional styles that are consistently beautifully, made for new-borns up to age 12. For more formal occasions, Sweetie Pie provides high-quality children’s occasion wear including christening gowns, communion dresses, christening gowns and flower girl dresses – perfect for something really special. Strideout members Samantha Patrick and Vicky Bridges, who are completing a full year of sporting activities to raise money for The Children’s Hospital Charity.
PUT YOUR BEST FOOT
FORWARD Strideout is inspiring women of all abilities to take up running …and two of the group’s members have taken the challenge to a whole new level in aid of charity. Fiona Barber reports. t’s proven to reduce stress and benefits almost every part of the body – there’s no denying running is a great way to get in shape. But for those of us who are out of practice or have never run before, lacing up and stepping out into the great outdoors can be daunting. Joining a running group can be a great way of getting started. There’s no worrying about routes or running alone and, seeing what others – who started off just like you – have achieved will inspire you to keep training. If you’re worried about whether you’re good enough to join a club, then stop, because local women and children’s community running group Strideout encourages and helps all abilities to start running. Gay Fletcher and fellow fitness fanatic Andrea Barber set up the group back in 2011 and, what began Samantha and Vicky as two friends in training for their going for an hill-walking challenges hour-long run

has grown into six organised run sessions a week from various locations in the S10, S6 and S35 area. “I used to drop my little girl off at Wisewood for gymnastics for an hour and take myself off for a run,” Gay says. Andrea joined her and soon, other mums began running with them too. Before long the pair decided to create an official running group, which would welcome and cater for all abilities. “We started with about five women, and now we have over 600 on our Facebook page and offer groups at Crookes, Oughtibridge, Stannington, and Wisewood, as well as body conditioning classes and a kid’s session on a Saturday morning.” Group numbers can vary from between 15 and 45 women, but no matter whether you’re a novice or a pro, there is a group to suit and supportive run leaders – Strideout members that have completed a Leadership in Running Fitness course – on hand to welcome, support and encourage. “There’s no pressure to run super-fast or be super-fit,” Gay says. “We also offer what a lot of groups don’t; a run-back system. So it

doesn’t matter whether you run an eight-minute mile or are jogging really slow, the front runners will always run back to the back runners. No one feels pressurised or left behind. It doesn’t matter what shape, size or age you are, you can give it a go.” The club has won the England Athletics Award for Yorkshire and Humberside Run Group of the Year twice and Gay is excited about what the future holds for Strideout. “We are supported by South Yorkshire community support coordinator Emma Hirst and we probably couldn’t have done what we’ve done without her. Our vision would be to have Strideout groups in lots of different areas in Sheffield.” With such a large following it’s no surprise that the group is much more to many of the women than simply a running club. Gay says: “It’s about confidence, improved fitness, friendship, and aspiration to challenge themselves.” Setting a challenge – whether it’s a 5k race or a marathon – is a great way of having something to aim towards and feel a sense of achievement. But Strideout members – Samantha Patrick and Vicky Bridges – decided to really raise the bar by completing a full year of sporting fund-raising activities. All of the money raised will be donated to The Children’s Hospital Charity and will be used to buy life-saving equipment, fund vital research and treatment for thousands of children from across the world. They have already run the Percy Pud 10k, which was held ‘We probably in December last year, and wouldn’t have other challenges, including the been running and Yorkshire Three Peaks – Pen-y-ghent (691 doing this without climbing metres), Whernside (728 Strideout too. They metres) and Ingleborough are so supportive (723 metres) in under 12 hours and the Sheffield half in helping with –marathon are set for April. The fitness levels and grand finale, the Three encouraging us. National Peaks Challenge, will the pair climb Snowdon, But it’s not just see Scafell Pike and Ben Nevis over about the running; three days in September and it’s the atmosphere equates to a gruelling 26 miles and 3,000 and the social side horizontal vertical metres, plus around of things, too.’ 800 driving miles in between. Their busy training schedule includes running with Strideout twice a week, a long run at the weekend as well as a full day walking in the Peaks once a month. “It’s not easy because we both have young children, but both my husband and Vicky’s have both been very supportive,” Sam admits. “We probably wouldn’t have been running and doing this without Strideout too. They are so supportive in helping with fitness levels and encouraging us. But it’s not just about the running; it’s the atmosphere and the social side of things too. It’s getting people who have never run before out of the house and doing something that, at first, they’re not too keen on and then they get to the point like me, where you don’t want to not run.” As well as sporting events, Sam and Vicky held a charity race night in January, where they raised over £2,000. Their joint target was set at £2,400 but the total already stands at an impressive £3013. “I haven’t got a clue what kind of target we will get to,” Sam says. “But I imagine we will raise quite a lot more because we’ve still got a lot of time left.” Gay adds: “It’s a fantastic charity and I think their dedication and commitment has been outstanding. The amount of money they have raised is fantastic, we are very proud of them.”
STRIDEOUT FACTS n Adult run sessions cost £1, body conditioning costs £4, kid’s sessions cost £2 and all the money Strideout makes goes back into the club to pay for equipment such as head torches, high-vis tops and venue hire. n Andrea is now a mentor for Mum’s Team – a campaign, which has been launched in Yorkshire to encourage women to lead sports Gay and Andrea and fitness activities in their local community and to encourage mums to exercise more. As part of this, a Strideout mum’s team is running from Nook Lane Junior School and Shooter's Grove Primary School at 9am. COMPLETE KITCHEN & BEDROOM SOLUTIONS Fitted in January 2016 Sheffield 5
From a replacement worktop to a whole new kitchen or bedroom, there’s no job too small for CKB. aving traded out of Middlewood Road for over six years now, the Sheffield public are becoming well aware of the high quality, bespoke service on offer at Complete Kitchens and Bedroom Solutions. Owned by Scott Webster, CKB offer a complete kitchen and bedroom service alongside the capability of anything from removing walls to building extensions. Scott said: “When you come to us you really do get everything. Building work, electrics, plastering, decoration, fitting, flooring – this is a one-stop-shop.” But just because Scott and his team can perform complete renovations, that doesn’t mean that they have to. CKB understand that not everybody can afford top to bottom renovations at this moment in time so are more than happy to work on anything from replacing a single kitchen unit upwards. “I can do eight metres of worktop and a new sink and tap for £950 or a whole kitchen or bedroom – so people can have whatever they can budget for,” said Scott. “And if you have your own electrician or plumber that you would like to use then you are more than welcome to do so. We
H
CKB
will do as little or as much as you wish.” A feature of CKB which sets it apart from many of its competitors is that it manufactures everything on site, giving it a bespoke service. This means it can cater to any needs or desires. Scott employs a close team of dedicated workers including a registered electrician, and plumber, as well as qualified plasterer, brick layers and window fitters, who are all contracted to CKB. Gloss doors particularly in white and cream are in vogue at the current time. This gives a room a fresh appearance and Scott has seen requests for this design boom. Consequently Scott is offering deals on an Astro white and cream gloss – check in at the showroom or give him a call for more deals. Scott doesn’t believe in such gimmicks as offering customers ten per cent off their total bill though. “These are often used to pull the wool over people’s eyes. I offer competitive prices from the word go.” Should you contact CKB, Scott will come out to view your home for a free appointment. The visit normally lasts for an hour depending on job size. “I don’t give
quotes off-the-cuff. I am meticulous when it comes to pricing, so post-appointment I will go through everything and provide an accurate, itemised and fair quote.” Scott is the initial point of contact for customers and he not only designs his work but does the fitting too. Once Scott has committed to a job he dedicates all his time to it from inception to completion. He guarantees that he will not be working on multiple projects at one time and is even willing to turn down work to be able to do this. “My customers like to know that I will always be there and that they have my undivided attention. That is the least they deserve and will get when they come to me.” As such his customers can contact him 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Doors and worktops are guaranteed for a decade but for extra peace of mind Scott ensures that payment comes in instalments and that the full fee is not paid until the job has been completed satisfactorily. For a company that will provide your home with undivided, specialist and bespoke attention, give CKB a call today!

PROMOTIONVISUAL BATHROOMS
When Nicola of Hillsborough needed a new bathroom, her parents didn’t hesitate to recommend Visual Bathrooms on Holme Lane. y mum and dad knew of Eric, Visual Bathrooms’ owner, and told me to go and see him. I went to a few other places just to check them out but Visual Bathrooms impressed me the most. “I found Eric really nice to deal with. He was friendly, approachable and didn’t use any pushy sales tactics so I always knew I could trust him. I originally thought of Visual Bathrooms as quite a luxurious choice but he was great at sticking to my budget, too. “My bathroom is quite small so I thought there would be big restrictions on the design, but Eric gave me lots of options to choose from. He came to the house to assess the room and said that he could move things around to optimise the space. “When it came to choosing the products, I had a rough idea what I wanted but was really grateful to Eric for his ideas and advice. He knows the industry inside out so he could suggest certain brands or products based on my vague descriptions, or match what I’d seen in his showroom to items that would suit my bathroom. He recommended things I wouldn’t have thought of and even came to the tile showroom with me to help me pick. “One of the main reasons I chose Visual Bathrooms was because Eric takes care of everything. I live by myself so I didn’t want to be arranging for separate plumbers, electricians, and tilers etc to come into my house. Eric just took all the hassle out of it.
M
“
“The guys who came to fit the bathroom were great. I work during the day so I was a bit reluctant to leave them a key and let them get on with it but Eric put my mind at rest and assured me they were totally trustworthy. He was right – the few times I did see them, we had a nice chat, and they treated my house with respect, covering up the carpets and cleaning up after themselves. Eric also popped in a few times to check everything was going OK, and kept in touch to let me know Nicola’s what was happening. bathroom “Whether you have lots of money to spend before the on a new bathroom, or are on a tight budget, I makeover would definitely recommend Visual Bathrooms. I’ve been showing my bathroom off to my friends and they all say that it looks like a hotel! I didn’t think I could have something so nice in such a small space but I’m so happy with the result.”

Fundraising activities throughout 2015 included a host of fun events, ranging from an It’s a Knockout contest to raffling a day’s annual leave and competing in the annual 5k Colour Obstacle Run at Rother Valley Country Park. The company also entered a team into the hospice’s first Night Strider event, joining a thousand people as they raised money with a night walk through the streets of Sheffield. “Fletchers Bakery is delighted to have supported St Luke’s Hospice during 2015,” said general manager Jon Cooper. “Many of our staff have taken part in fundraising activities and we are very proud to be involved with such a worthwhile Sheffield charity. “We plan on continuing our support for St Luke’s throughout 2016 and doing more fundraising activities with the aim of beating our 2015 total!” St Luke’s corporate fundraising manager Joasia Lesniak added: “This is an incredible total and we are delighted that a Sheffield company like Fletchers is so keen to be associated with a Sheffield charity like St Luke’s. “Every penny they raise in the coming year will do so much to help the lives of St Luke’s patients and their families.”
New French café opens in Hillsborough Et Voila (opposite Hillsborough Park) is now open serving traditional French breakfasts, delicious light lunches and home made cakes. Nick Clegg helps Bradfield to get mobile phone coverage Bradfield is the latest rural community to receive 3G mobile coverage as part of Vodafone’s Rural Open Sure Signal (ROSS) programme. The programme aims to bring 3G voice services and much needed access to the internet via mobile devices to 100 ‘notspot’ villages and hamlets across the UK. Vodafone’s Open Sure Signal technology uses a small low-powered 3G mobile base station, just a bit larger than a home

broadband box. It works with existing broadband to create a 3G signal which provides a blanket of coverage for rural communities with little, or no signal. Supported by village champion Teresa Bisatt and local MP Nick Clegg, Vodafone has now installed the technology across several locations in the village, meaning the wider community will now have good quality mobile signal for the first time and are better able to take part in and enjoy

the social and business benefits that mobile connectivity can bring. Vodafone UK invited locals to the community launch at The Plough in Low Bradfield, where Nick Clegg along with representatives from Vodafone, were available to discuss the project. Local hairdresser sings for Macmillan
S6 EVENTS
S6 hairdresser Paul Elliott has recorded a single to raise money for the Macmillan centre at Northern General. Paul’s father was recently admitted to the palliative care unit with prostate and bone cancer, where he sadly, later lost his life. His father always loved to hear him sing, so the CD was the perfect way to honour his memory, whilst also supporting the charity. “He didn’t enjoy musicals, but he enjoyed hearing me sing,” said Paul. “I chose to record Stars from Les Miserables because I sang it to him before he died. The nurses at the hospital were absolutely fantastic. They were there for me as well as my dad, and this CD is my way of saying thank you to them. I’d also like to thank 2Fly Studios for making this possible.” Paul, who works at Kaleidoscope on Middlewood Road, is a trained singer and attended several music schools and operatic societies, including Millhouse Green Male Voice Choir and Grenoside and Birley Carr Players. The CD went on sale on 21 February and has already raised more than £200. Paul has sold 25 copies of the single in the first four days of its release and is hoping to get it played on Hallam FM. The single has had such positive feedback that Paul is thinking about doing a Christmas album. Stars from Les Miserables by Paul Elliot is available from Kaleidoscope on Middlewood Road and the Post Office on Norfolk Street in Sheffield city centre, priced £3.

PROMOTIONHALLAMSHIRE PHYSIO
‘Why your back pain doesn’t improve’. red, a 55 yearold computer worker, presented with low back pain that had given him problems for over 20 years. In the last six months, his pain had become constant and scans had indicated he had a bulging disc and degenerative joint changes in his spine. Medication was not helping and the side effects were making the condition worse. He was unable to go to work and feared he would never be able to play with his grandchildren again. Psychologically, he had low mood and was unable to sleep. This is a common scenario seen in patients at the Hallamshire physiotherapy clinic. The balance between how you are using your spine and, more importantly, what you think is happening in your spine is crucial to helping people. The vicious cycle the pain produces, leading to poor sleep and negative thought processes about the future, exacerbates the pain experience and, naturally, we avoid normal activities and rest for prolonged periods of time.
F
2016 is a big year for the Regional Magazine Company (RMC) as we launch our 30th anniversary celebrations – and we are looking for other businesses who have managed to stand the test of time to join in the fun. Our story started way back in 1986 when the first copy of our first magazine, Westside, was published. We’ve grown considerably since then into a company that publishes nine monthly lifestyle and business titles across Yorkshire, North Notts and North Derbyshire, as well as publishing books for some of Great Britain’s most prestigious restaurants.
“…I no longer feel that treatment is being ‘done to me’ but I am at the centre of a partnership that is making sense and getting the results I didn’t think were possible.”
We also have a strong online presence and we’ll be celebrating our 30th with a major relaunch of our website.
Fred only improved once he was placed at the centre of the rehabilitation process. It was explained to him that over 70 per cent of people over the age of 50 who have never experienced pain in the back will show bulging discs and degenerative joints on scans – this is a normal finding. Our spine changes as we get older but this is perfectly normal and should not condemn people to a lifetime of pain. With this knowledge, and changing how Fred used his lower back, he started to change. His sleep improved and he slowly started to reduce his painkillers. It was identified that his main problem was sitting for up to eight hours a day and avoiding movement for fear of causing more pain. Improving people’s pain and function is much easier when they are not in fear of movement. The spine is incredibly robust and with a thorough assessment most people can be helped. Fred improved within four weeks and was grateful to the different approach that the Hallamshire Physiotherapy Clinic employs. Rehabilitation has to be driven by research and not outmoded beliefs about our spines.
1986 was the year Prince Andrew married Sarah Ferguson, Gary Lineker set a UK transfer record when he moved to Barcelona for £2.75million, Margaret Thatcher opened the M25 and the first episode of Casualty was aired. Since then, as anyone who has been in business the same length of time will know, there have been good times as well as upsets, recessions and major changes across the world.
So, if you also set up your business in the year of 1986, congratulations on standing the test of time – and here’s a birthday gift from RMC for you. We are offering a free advert in one of our titles. There’s no catch – it’s as simple as that. Contact: jillion.wood@regionalmagazine.co.uk to find out more.

HOME TRUTHS
It’s time to spruce up your home in time for spring with the help of Britain’s top experts. s the days get warmer and brighter, it’s time to spring clean our homes and venture into our gardens. But with so much contradictory gardening and décor advice out there, it’s difficult to know where to begin. That’s why we’ve dug out the best pieces of home and garden advice from the biggest experts in the business. From Britain’s favourite gardening experts, to cleaners and interior designers, let the professionals help you get your home and garden into shape this season – weather permitting.
A
Words: Phoebe Seymour
THE GARDEN GURUS Alan Titchmarsh says… get your soil up to scratch Your garden soil is likely to be in poor condition right now, after the wet winter has washed away many of its nutrients. So one of the very first jobs to do, is to get the soil up to scratch – then it can nurture all your plants, just as they’re starting to grow. Feed beds and borders with any good general fertiliser such as blood, fish and bone or another organic alternative. Sprinkle it on by hand all over the soil, applying it underneath shrubs and round the base of climbers, perennials and clumps of bulbs. Trickle a line of fertiliser along the base of all your hedges – they’ll be feeling fairly starved after this winter and spring is the perfect time to feed them. Fruit trees, bushes and canes also benefit from a good start-ofthe-season feed, so use the same general fertiliser for those too. But since they need extra potash to encourage flowering and
046 - 047 Sixer Mar16_Layout 1 07/03/2016 11:55 Page 2
fruiting, also give them sulphate of potash (at half an ounce per square yard). This same “cocktail” is a good late-spring feed for clematis, which is a greedy plant and also appreciates extra potash.
Carol Klein says… sow your seeds Outdoors, self-sown seedlings are beginning to peep out in beds and borders, but the greenhouse is heaving with life. Providing it has been stored in a cool, dry place and out of bright sunlight, most seed is raring to go. Any pot or recycled container will do for your sowing as long as it has drainage holes (imperative) and a reasonable depth (at least 5cm). What are we sowing? Lots of veg. Fill containers liberally with peat-free seed compost and firm gently to produce a level surface just below the rim of the pot or tray. Sprinkle small seeds on the surface of the compost by pinching with thumb and forefinger or tapping from your palm; it doesn't matter how you do it as long as the seed is sown finely. The biggest cause of death in seedlings is from damping off, a fungal disease that makes them collapse. And the main reason for damping off is sowing too thickly. Cover seed with a layer of sharp grit, emulating what would happen in nature. The grit helps stop the seed being washed away yet retains moisture underneath and provides drainage around the shoots. If seedlings are there for any length of time, grit also deters weeds and liverwort from taking hold.
Monty Don says… select seasonal flowers After the first delicate bulbs of early spring and the pastel flush of yellow that follows with daffodils, tulips bring colour like a carnival to the garden. The earliest will start flowering at the beginning of April, but the end of the month and well into May is their prime season. Before choosing your bulbs, it is worth remembering where tulips come from so that the ground can be properly prepared. They mainly originate from an area that now occupies Turkey, Iraq, Iran and Armenia, where they grow on shale slopes. This means they have very sharp drainage so they never sit in the wet. Give them as much sun as you have and – most importantly – do whatever you can to improve the drainage. If you have very wet, cold soil, it is a good idea to grow new bulbs in containers. The bulbs can then be lifted in due course and the best surviving bulbs from the containers planted into the borders. Not all tulips flower at the same time. It is much easier to plant tulips of the same type and group such as lily-flowered, triumph or parrot tulips together.
THE HOME HEROES Aggie Mackenzie says… spring clean Start with a small room so you won't feel daunted. Make a list of what you have, and what you no longer need. Divide everything into categories, such as paper, gadgets, clothes, books. Take out everything that needs to be cleaned – and I mean everything, including the curtains. If you haven't used something for more than a year, out it goes. If it holds very dear memories, start a memory box. Divide everything into: things that are useless and have to be thrown away; items that can be recycled; and things you can give to friends. Then start assembling your piles. Once you've collected everything, act immediately – go to the tip, the charity shop or the recycling depot. Bring in a basin of hot, soapy water. Clean those ledges. Clean windows until they shine. Dust the lamp. Get the vacuum attachment and clean the dark corners. This takes time – don't expect to do more than two rooms a day.
Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen says… substance before style Many people place maintenance way down their list of property essentials, preferring to spend money on more immediately glamorous items, but there's no point in buying a costly, luxurious carpet or rug for your bedroom, if two months later a leak caused by faulty roof tiles means you have to replace it. There is nothing stylish about damp. Preventive care is the best form of maintenance - it's the least intrusive and, in the end, it's the least expensive. Get the basics right - and then you can have fun! The great irony is that if most of us spent a little time and money on some simple maintenance, in the long run we'd probably have more to spend on the, admittedly, exciting creative and imaginative aspects of home ownership.
Kelly Hoppen says… lighten up Accessories and décor, or home jewellery as I like to call it, provide those little accents that add beauty and personality to a home. Build a collection of staple pieces, such as coral and vases, which can conveniently be changed with the seasons. Choose your shades carefully – the colours and themes used in your home can have a great impact. I am notorious for my love of taupe – I use it so much because it’s a gorgeous shade that always provides a chic, timeless look. Lighting is crucial and has such a big impact on a room. For an affordable and unique touch, place uplighters by the edges of your curtains, which will light up the ceiling.

SIXEREASTER
CHOCOLATE HEAVEN! Our tasters give their guide to the most deliciously indulgent Easter eggs on offer this year. ew things in life bring more joy than tearing into an Easter egg to reveal what tasty treats lie inside. At this time of year, the shelves are brimming with chocolately treats – which presents something of a dilemma when it comes to choosing what to get who. To help out those in such a pickle, our tasting panel put their heads together and put a selection of this year’s eggs to the test. Some may be a bit eggsessive – but they’re a crackin’ bunch. (Geddit?)

BEST FOR KIDS Morrisons large dinosaur Roary 250g, £4
Hotel Chocolat extra-thick rocky road to caramel egg 500g, £27
OUR WINNER
Beautifully presented in a luxurious hatbox this devilishly thick egg has everything. With one half milk chocolate with cookies, puffed rice and chocolate chunks, and the other caramel-milk chocolate, it is indulgent without being sickly sweet. There is also a fabulous selection of 12 chocolates, which includes delights such as a hot cross bun and a billionaire’s shortbread. Perfect for adults, wonderfully playful and great to share, too.
Children love nothing more than novelty chocolate, and when it’s animal-shaped, it seems to taste all the more delicious. While the quality of chocolate won’t blow you away, this cute grinning toothy critter will prove a hit with the kids.
BEST FOR ALLERGIES Sainsbury’s Freefrom egg 125g, £3.50 Egg free, gluten free, wheat free, milk free… while the panel applauded this egg for offering those with allergies the chance to be involved in the choctivities, it didn’t quite have the same depth of regular chocolate. On the plus side, at £3.50 for an egg and some chocolate discs, it’s a steal.
Words: Stephanie Burns and Fiona Barber
BEST ORGANIC OPTION Montezuma’s organic milk chocolate button egg 250g, £9.99 With adorable bunny packaging and a generous portion of buttons, this egg made a great first impression. On the downside, the thickness of the buttons meant they didn’t instantly melt in the mouth, but the chocolate egg was redeeming with a moreish light, creamy texture. If it’s organic and British you’re after, this is your egg.
BEST FOR STYLISH FRIENDS Tesco Finest milk chocolate square egg 300g, £8 The contemporary design was an instant hit with the panel and the contents did not disappoint either. The thickness of this egg made it difficult to break into but – oh boy – it was definitely worth the effort. With a creamy taste similar to Galaxy chocolate, this stylish egg was a real hit and is something any milk chocolate lover would be delighted to receive.

BEST ORNAMENTAL VALUE Bettys medium milk chocolate spring flowers egg 350g, £25 This grown-up Easter treat is clearly a labour of love and the attention to detail is easy to appreciate. With a glossy finish and delicate hand-painted floral decorations, this was almost too pretty to break into. After taking the plunge, our panel discovered strong cocoa flavours ideal for those in search of a high-quality chocolate fix and, while it comes with a heftier price tag than some others, it would make an ideal gift for that someone special.
BEST FOR FAMILY FUN Cadbury Dairy Milk decorate with icing 100g, £4 With a delicious Dairy Milk egg, icing pen and a small stand to balance your egg on while decorating, this great value-formoney egg is perfect for keeping the kids entertained. Let them doodle on their own egg or even decorate one to give as a gift. Tasty and fun – what more can you ask for?
BEST TO IMPRESS Booja Booja hazelnut crunch truffles large egg 138g, £17.95 With a stunning blue casing, delicate floral designs and a luxurious velvet lining, this is one truly classy egg. The truffles are dairy free, organic and gluten free, but with a silky-smooth chocolate, toasted hazelnuts and an angelic dusting of cocoa powder, which offset the sweetness of the truffle, they are in no way lacking. Perfect to take along as a gift if you are at the in-laws for Easter lunch and the gorgeous velvet egg-shaped casing could be kept for use as a jewellery box.
BEST FOR A SUPER SWEET TOOTH Waitrose caramel and fudge egg 185g, £7 Not for the faint hearted, this indulgent egg was an instant hit for the sugarlovers on the panel. With milk chocolate making up one half of the egg and a dark caramel chocolate for the other, it is also ideal for those in search of variety. Packed with chewy caramel throughout and sprinkled with chunky fudge pieces, self control is needed to avoid overindulgence.
BEST FOR WHITE CHOCOLATE LOVERS Nestlé Milkybar milk and cookies 162g, £3 Any fan of white chocolate will enjoy the sumptuous creaminess of this and the cookie pieces add a welcome crunchy texture. The shell also wasn’t too thick, making it ideal for any parents looking to limit their children’s chocolate intake over Easter.
BEST FOR DARK CHOCOLATE LOVERS Green and Black’s organic dark 70 per cent 165g ,£6.59 For those who find milk or white just a little too sweet this is an ideal alternative. While the panel agreed the chocolate was high quality and featured a nice strong flavour, the accompanying fruity fragrance caused a split of opinions. Some thought it added another dimension, while others found it overpowering. Nevertheless, this is an intense indulgence with the bonus of being organic.

PROMOTIONI DID IT MY WAY
I Did It My Way’s fair funeral pledge means you can be sure of a dignified send-off at a reasonable price. fter a recent move to 10 Niagara Road, next door to the police conference and training centre, I Did It My Way’s business has continued to be fruitful. The independent funeral directors have a positive reputation in Sheffield and they are are spreading their services further afield. The new chapel of rest is a particularly peaceful place, beautifully maintained and decorated, with beautiful wall art to comfort families. Every piece of furniture has been upcycled from the old office, repainted or refurbished to give it a new look, without the cost of buying new items, proving that you can make a place look beautiful and still maintain costs. They never charge for the use of the Chapel of Rest, and have designed special message cards for families to enable them to put messages in with their loved ones, should they choose to do so. Funeral costs are still kept as low as possible, and a commitment to the fair funeral pledge is testament to this. A straight-to-crematorium service currently stands at £1,660, and can be attended by close family members.
A
Frankie, a little border terrier pup, comes to work most days; clients love him, and say he takes their minds off things.
There is no service, but this allows them to say goodbye in a way that best suits them. We will also arrange this at the family’s convenience. Although there is no service, it doesn’t mean that the family’s wishes shouldn’t be honoured at a time which best suits them. The basic service is £2,150 (cremation only), no other costs to pay, and a colourful coffin depicting the departed’s life, or something special about them. With the hearse and a limousine this is fully inclusive at £2,900 (cremation only). The price remains the same for a wicker coffin, which has proved to be very popular. I Did It My Way’s ethos quite simply says: “I’ve lived a life that’s full, I’ve travelled each and every highway, but more, much more than this, I did it my way…” Steve and the team pride themselves on the level of service they offer; they believe in acting in their clients’ best interests at all times. Chefs and publicans Chris and Dan took over the Shoulder of Mutton in February, bringing with them over ten years each of experience working in other local pubs, including the Admiral Rodney in Loxley and the Hollybush in Rivelin. Both are now eager to put their mark on this beautiful rural pub and look forward to welcoming guests old and new. A new menu focusing on freshness and home cooking is up and running and plans are afoot for speciality evenings, theme nights, local entertainment and of course, the continuation of the ever-popular quiz night on Thursdays. The large dining area in the pub is perfect for larger parties and a range of buffets are available, along with free room hire. So if you have a birthday, family gathering or a business meeting coming up, give them a call.

CURRYING FLAVOUR
Jaflong’s been a favourite with Crookes diners for years – and with good reason. here are few things in life bring greater joy than curry and cold beer. For me, any excuse to visit a local curry house is a good one and, on this occasion, it was a Friday evening and time to celebrate the start of the weekend. Any restaurant that has stood the test of time is a sure sign of a good thing, and Jaflong in Crookes has been a firm favourite since it opened its doors over 17 years ago. With a combination of Indian and Bangladeshi cuisine on offer, there is a fabulous selection of meat, fish and vegetarian dishes to choose from. The drinks menu also presents an excellent range of wines, spirits and soft drinks. Nevertheless, we couldn’t resist a pint of refreshing Cobra each to enjoy with our starters. My succulent Tandoori king prawns were a beautiful vibrant pink-orange, and tasted just as good as they looked. My partner opted for the mixed bhaji starter and enjoyed a crisp well-filled vegetable samosa, a fragrant onion bhaji and a delicious patty of aloo chop. With such an extensive menu, choosing mains was no easy feat. Thankfully, owner Shahab Uddin was on hand to make recommendations based on our preferences. As a fan of a healthy spice kick, but nothing too intense, Shabah recommended I try the chef’s special bhuna. Featuring chunky pieces of chicken tikka, lamb tikka, king prawns, peppers and onions in a rich medium-hot ginger and garlic sauce, this is dish provided just the right amount of heat and is perfect for indecisive diners (like myself ) who prefer to sample a bit of everything. Across the table my companion tucked into a fresh and flavoursome vegetable biryani and a peshwari nan added a sweet dimension and proved to be the ideal accompaniment. The tarka dahl, which we shared and eagerly savoured every last delicious

buttery morsel also deserves a special mention. We managed to find room for dessert and the mango kulfi (a traditional Indian dessert similar to ice cream) and matka – creamy kulfi topped with almonds and pistachio pieces, accompanied by a saffron sauce served in a beautiful floral pot – offered the perfect sweet-but-light ending to a flawless meal. While Jaflong has enjoyed years of success, Shahab continually strives to improve and offer something new to his customers. Each year, he and head chef, Abdul Baished, add five new dishes to the menu, so whether you’re a regular or a newcomer, you’re sure to discover something new.
