finishes on your doorstep, right outside our front door at Fox Valley. Don’t think this is going to be some watered-down version of the French race. Although only in its third year, this legacy event is a favourite of the pros. It’s one of the hardest short-stage races on the calendar and features the hardest climbs in Yorkshire – and most of them at that. “A bike race is coming, what’s the big deal? Well, about 180 pro cyclists, 60 team cars, 20 coaches and mechanics’ trucks – do you want me to start on the event organisation, the press, the motorbike outriders, police, two helicopters, a plane? This event is going to be brilliant for Sheffield, Stocksbridge and the surrounding area. Oh, and I forgot to mention the sportive, the amateur support ride for all-comers, on the morning of the final stage – you can add another 5,000 riders, friends, family, cars… “Are you getting a feel for the scale of this thing? Trust me, you haven’t seen anything yet.”

PREPARATIONS FOR THE FINAL STAGE OF THE TOUR DE YORKSHIRE – WHICH FINISHES AT FOX VALLEY – ARE WELL UNDER WAY. PHOEBE SEYMOUR LOOKS AT WHAT WE CAN EXPECT TO SEE. et on your bike, sport your team’s colours or simply turn up and celebrate. Tour de Yorkshire will be back on Sunday 30 April. The 2017 Tour de Yorkshire, sponsored by Maserati, will offer a unique mix of Tour de France delivery, combined with Yorkshire hospitality and beautiful scenery, resulting in a dream day for cycle enthusiasts. Taking place on the third and final day of the Tour de Yorkshire, stage three of the journey will start in Bradford and finish at the Fox Valley shopping centre in Stocksbridge. Stage three will be a gruelling 194.5km and riders will be making their way up to Grassington via Ilkley, before heading back down through Skipton, Keighley, Halifax and Huddersfield, to the finish line at Fox Valley. There will be eight challenging climbs including familiar local climbs Côte de Midhopestones and Côte de Deepcar. And if you’re a keen cyclist, you will have the chance to ride the same roads ahead of the pros, including crossing the finish line, as part of the Sportive Countdown. Choose from a 45km, 75km or an ambitious 100km route, or take part in Cycletta – a 45km women’s only bike ride.

It is their mission to make Yorkshire the first place where nobody, because of their circumstances, is deprived of a bike. If you have old bikes that you no longer use, donate them to one of Yorkshire’s 51 donation stations. To date, the project has provided more than 31,000 opportunities for young people to ride a bike. There have already been 17 roadshows and as a result of huge demand, which has seen attendance figures surpass 1,000, Welcome to Yorkshire has announced two extra Tour de Yorkshire roadshows on the run up to the main event. I stopped doing activities I loved, spending time with my children and avoided situations where I felt my weight would be judged.” Stepping on the scales left Kerry feeling low, but it also gave her the determination she needed to tackle her weight problem head on. “I hadn’t weighed myself for years. I imagined I would weigh about 13-14 stone, so when the scales told me I was 17st 6.5lbs I couldn’t believe it. “I had seen advertisements for G&M Healthcare with Alevere and decided I was going to give it a try. I was so sceptical to begin with, since I had always been trying to lose weight - I remembered how exhausting it was trying to find the perfect diet plan or weight loss ‘trick’.” Combining high quality, flavoursome foods and state of the art ultrasound technology, it was the maintenance stage of the Alevere programme that Kerry found most difficult. But, under strict medial supervision, she soon realised how important it was to enabling her to manage her weight long term. “The fast rate of weight loss kept me motivated and the therapy sessions gave me the support I needed to stay on track and help me understand more about my relationship with food.” So far, Kerry has lost over seven stone and uses her own weight loss as a tool to spur herself on. “As the weight came off, I could not believe how good I felt and how different I looked. I lost almost seven stone in 21 weeks and I feel amazing. “Seeing the weight come off gave me

The plan has taught me to think about what I am putting into my body.” Like everyone, Kerry has hit the occasional rut but she says she tries to combat it by switching up her workout routine. "My weight is no longer ruling my life. Before, I let the weight define me and my boundaries. Now, I don't. I make the rules. "I've learned to be patient about the rest of the weight loss," and she reminds others to do the same. "Instead of always being down on yourself for how much more you have to go, look back at all you've already done." TO PLAN OR NOT TO PLAN – IS DEATH NO LONGER A TABOO? s we move into 2017, it seems there is still a stigma surrounding death, funerals and severe illnesses. Do we talk about it? If so, how much do we discuss? What can we ask? And when? Part of those wonderings is the increasing recognition that many of us want to start to plan ahead for life’s only inevitable expense. Increasingly these days, it seems that every time we turn on the TV to catch the morning headlines, somebody somewhere has been killed or seriously injured. The newspapers love nothing more than to report on a natural disaster, plane crash or terrorist plot; so why then is it that we still see death as being something we can’t talk about? Traditionally, death had a far more religious connotation that it does now and was seen, in many cultures, as the passing from one state to another (usually a better place) and, although it still remains very much at the forefront of our thoughts when loved ones pass, it seems that the religious element has declined over the last 30 or so years. Perhaps this is because there is a “new generation” of folk who rarely (if ever) appear to visit a dedicated place of worship and seem to be more interested in achieving higher scores on the latest Candy Crush Saga than visualising spiritual paths to take. Interestingly though, this same generation are finely tuned into the part that modern technology plays in their day to day lives and they have become savvier consumers as a result: Discounted Insurances, better mortgage rates, cheaper items for sale and so on. This doesn’t end when funerals are in need of arranging, as this generation are often left with dealing with the funeral arrangements for their parents, and often without any real knowledge of what those loved ones really wanted. Just five years ago, only five per cent of people would search online for a funeral director at the time of need. In 2017, it is expected that this figure will rise to almost 75 per cent, but what they are searching for may be of a surprise to some. The number one key word searched for when looking for a funeral director was “CHEAP”!! The internet is now playing a pivotal role in breaking the ice when it comes to discussing death. Whilst the traditional and very private emotional experience of death remains exactly that – private – the process of dealing with loss and grieving has become a much more public affair. Death, like everything else in life, has become much more acceptable, much less private, more openly talked about and indeed much more commercialised. This doesn’t mean you need to overpay when planning a funeral though, as independent, expert and fair advice can (and should) be sought on not only how to plan your funeral but also who to trust with your money. A starting point can often be something as simple as a cup of tea and a chat. In other words – get talking about it, plan it, and if appropriate pay for it at today’s prices. You will enjoy the greater peace of mind that will inevitably result.

Parkwood rides again arkwood Springs used to be seen as a blot on the landscape,” said Sheffield Council community forest manager Tim Shortland, “but now it really is a country park in the centre of the city. My dad put me a bike together to go over the jumps in the quarry, and further up towards Owlerton we’d climb pyramids of stones from the tips and jump in the buckets swinging over on cables fifty feet in the air to the power station.” On a sunny January morning, a stream of more modern mountain bikers descended the bike trail which opened at Parkwood four years ago, watched by a film crew. “As soon as the commercial side really cotton on to the massive potential here it’s going to be amazing for the city,” said video maker Ed Birch of Salt Street Productions. A partnership of locals, the council, conservation groups and landfill operators Viridor has accelerated the changes at Parkwood, said Neill Schofield chair of Friends of Parkwood Springs. “Ten years ago, this was not somewhere to spend a pleasant Saturday morning. There was antisocial behaviour, with cars being set alight. But now I think this is a key part of the Outdoor City.”

Leading cancer charity appeals for volunteers Step out on the Three Peaks Challenge and support St Luke’s Sheffield Wednesday striker Sam Winnall is urging fans to sign up for one of the year’s toughest walking challenges and support St Luke’s Hospice and the Sheffield Wednesday Community Foundation. The Yorkshire Three Peaks Challenge will raise money both for Sheffield’s only hospice and for the Sheffield Wednesday Community Foundation on 20 May. The Yorkshire Three Peaks Challenge takes on the peaks of Pen-y-ghent, Whernside and Ingleborough, a 24-mile route that includes 5,200ft (1,585m) of ascent and which should be completed in just 12 hours. A leading charity is looking for volunteers to help them reach even more people in Sheffield who are affected by cancer. Macmillan Cancer Support needs volunteers to support at the Yorkshire Half Marathon on Sunday 9 April 2017. Volunteers are needed to support the amazing Team Macmillan runners who are hoping to raise £40,000, which could fund a Macmillan nurse for nine months. Volunteers will be helping to marshal and cheer people along the course and hand out refreshments. Fundraising manager, Rob Turner, said: “We really need volunteers that are able to give just two to four hours of their time on Sunday 9 April between 7am and 1pm. You will be helping us to give our runners the best possible experience to try to raise as much money as possible to allow us to support more people affected by cancer. Partnership with Places for People Leisure raises thousands for the British Heart Foundation Places for People Leisure Centres in Sheffield have announced that their partnership with the British Heart Foundation (BHF) has raised a phenomenal £5,074 towards the fight for every heartbeat. Around seven million people are currently living with cardiovascular disease in the UK and the funds raised by Places for People Leisure will help support the BHF’s research into preventing and treating these devastating conditions. Staff and members at Graves Health and Sports Centre, Wisewood Sport Centre and Thorncliffe Health and Leisure Centre got involved by holding wear red events, raffles, and auctions and encouraged everyone to donate bags of stock to fill local BHF shops. Jo Strong, cardiac rehab instructor, also took on the Helsinki Marathon to raise funds. Alex Greaves, contract manager at Places for People Leisure, said: “The BHF is

leading the fight against heart disease and we are so pleased to have raised so much money to support their vital work. Hitting a high note TOP MUSICIANS HEAD FOR HIGH BRADFIELD’S ANNUAL CELEBRATION OF MUSIC. ulian Lloyd Webber, Nicola Benedetti, Tasmin Little, Jennifer Pike, Wihan Quartet, Emma Johnson MBE and John Lenehan are just some of the classical music superstars that have featured in the past editions of the Bradfield Festival of Music, held every June in the fairytale setting of St Nicholas' Church, High Bradfield. The festival is not exclusively open to classical music royalty: throughout its history, the event has striven to celebrate both young and local musicians as well, working closely with Sheffield Music Hub and local ensembles, bands and soloists. 2017 will mark the 20th edition of the festival since its revival in 1998. Evidence from the Bradfield Parish archives shows that a music festival was held in the Parish Church on Whit Monday in 1813, 1825 and 1835. Little did those festival organisers of 200 years ago know that a week-long festival would be happening in the same church today. The 20th anniversary edition will start on Saturday 24 June 2017 and is set to be one of

the best yet. Highlights include The Academy of St Martin in the Fields Chamber Ensemble; Songsmiths featuring Elizabeth Watts; Nicky Spence, Christopher Ainslie and Audrey Hyland; the Escher String Quartet; Jacqui Dankworth with Charlie Wood; ZRI and Neil Taylor, organist and formerly director of music at Sheffield Cathedral, who will be in concert with Austonley Brass. Many of the artists included in the programme are not seen at other venues in this area. The festival strives to remain unique, and to ensure that only top quality music features in the events. The Bradfield Festival of Music is a registered charity and does not receive any national funding whatsoever, but does receive limited financial assistance from generous local business sponsors, local charities, and individual supporters.
