Stressfree property sales & lettings LET U-DO TAKE THE HASSLE OUT OF MARKETING YOUR HOME. aking the decision to move is all well and good, but sometimes we need more than motivation to help us achieve it. Perhaps you’ve been thinking about putting your house up for sale, but haven’t known where to begin, or maybe your house has been on the market for a while, but you’re struggling to get it sold. Either way, U-Do can help. After getting fed up of continually poor customer service, Brett Russell decided to launch a new type of estate agent. With years of experience in customer service, management and property development, managing director Brett is knowledgeable about what buyers really want and can deliver expert advice on how to market your home effectively. “As a hybrid estate agent, U-Do provides the best of both worlds – internet prices with a local touch,” says Brett. “Personal service is absolutely paramount. I’m happy to meet clients face to face at our Sheffield-based office or I’m always at the end of a phone line. “When taking a potential buyer around a home, one thing I’ve noticed about typical estate agents is that they simply show them – this is the bathroom, this is the bedroom. Whereas I sell the benefits of each room and their possibilities.” The standard package costs £495 which includes listings on the U-Do website and other popular online portals, being marketed on the U-Do Facebook page, full staff support, picture and description service and a PDF sales brochure. They also offer clients the option of a bespoke package tailored to suit
M
their needs at little extra cost. From sale boards, floor plans and EPC certification to U-Do agent viewings, U-Do open house events and printed brochures, they provide everything to make selling your home as simple and stress-free as possible. However, there is always extra help at hand if you need it. Brett is now offering sellers 30 minutes of free coaching on how to maximise their homes so they can get them sold. This is something no other estate agent does. And if the online market isn’t for you, UDo also offer the We-Do package which is a traditional estate agent service at £990, which includes property listings, taking viewing requests, confirmations, negotiating offers, full management of for sale signage, EPC certificate and much more.
@SixerRMC
Also new for 2018 is U-Do’s fully-managed letting service. So whether you’re a tenant looking for a new, good quality home or a landlord looking for a reliable and stress-free agency to work on your behalf, get in touch with Brett to find out more. Give U-Do a call today to see how they can give you the support and personal service you need to help you sell your home your way.

BRADFIELD PARISH COUNCIL’S NEWSLETTER IN ASSOCIATION WITH SIXER
CHAIRMAN’S MESSAGE s the warmer weather beckons, we’re preparing to spring into action in Bradfield, and are attempting to gather issues to take to the Sheffield Transport Users Group in response to a number of concerns raised by local residents. Issues can be raised by emailing admin@bradfield-yorks-pc.gov.uk We’re very keen to hear from the local community this month – not just about the diminishing public transport service for the area – but also for nominations for this year’s Citizens Awards. Nominations are now open and we’d like to hear from as many people as possible, about the many groups and individuals who put in so much time and effort to contribute to the quality of life in the Parish. We’re hoping to receive even more nominations this year, so please take time to
A
read the information included in this publication and pass on your nominations to the Parish Council. The first signs of spring also bring a moment of reflection. And as we usher in a new season, we think about some of our working partnerships. It’s been a busy few weeks, in which Bradfield Parish have purchased a new and improved set of swings at Wadsley Park Village Park, on behalf of Sheffield City Council who have installed and will maintain the equipment. I do hope you enjoy this month’s newsletter and please, don’t forget to let us know about your community’s unsung heroes. Victoria Talbot Chairman

Dot Russell (left) and the library book squad making everyone’s donations ready for the shelves
Library alive and well in Stannington ust over 20 years ago, Stannington lost its public library when the old wood-faced building burned to the ground following an arson attack. In 2013, loss of the new library loomed as funding cuts bit across all of Sheffield, as in much of the rest of the country. Despite a campaign against it, library staff posts were lost, and the planned closure would have gone ahead had local people not intervened. It was only through their hard work and generosity that Stannington Library was able to organise itself and survive. Since then, the library’s volunteers have worked hard and succeeded in keeping its doors open. The library continues to provide book loans, computer access and a host of other services to many local people. Dot Russell has been involved in all stages of Stannington Library’s recent history, as a member of Sheffield Libraries’ staff before she retired, and more recently as a volunteer and as a trustee of the charity now managing the library. “Stannington Library always has been a vibrant part of local life,” says Dot. “I am really glad that when closure looked a real possibility, there were enough people who stepped forward to make it viable into the future.
J
“But, whilst our volunteers are the real heroes of the story, there are all sorts of other people and organisations without whom it would be very hard for us to keep going. Everyone who has donated books or who has joined our Friends of Stannington Library scheme can be proud of what they have helped achieve.” Christ Church Stannington and Bradfield Parish Council are two organisations whose role has been positive. Both have provided funds that allowed specific authors and titles to be bought by the library, filling gaps in stock that keep the extended children’s section growing or that satisfy the appetites of the library’s most discerning adult readers. Local businesses such as Stannington Fruit & Veg and Stanwood Post Office make their contribution by keeping one of the library’s green collection boxes strategically close to their tills. Stannington’s two Co-op Foodstores are also big contributors through the Co-op Local Community Fund. Money from this channel is now going to support groups run by the library. These include BabyTime for children up to two-and-a-half years and StoryTime which is aimed at children from two-and-a-half to school age. Each has its own volunteer crew, and was already in place in the pre-volunteer era. Both continue to flourish, offering

activities based on stories, singing and crafts. The older group even produced work that was incorporated into the library’s 2017 Christmas card. The library’s monthly friendship group, The Tuesday Club, is another beneficiary of Co-op funds. This activity has been devised and created by volunteers to encourage people who may be experiencing social isolation to get involved and meet new people. The group is led by Jan Flamank, an enthusiastic and experienced community worker and artist, and is currently looking at natural history and wildlife through the seasons. Stannington Infant School enjoys weekly visits to the library, and all four local infant and junior schools work with the library on the Reading Agency’s Summer Reading Challenge. The library promotes a variety of social events aimed at fundraising, and at getting to know volunteers and users in relaxed, informal settings. These have ranged from a murder-mystery night, though an evening of songs from two world wars to an old-time music hall performance. Stannington Library Writers Group established itself in the library in 2015. This group has produced several anthologies, available in both Kindle and book forms, that have contributed a significant sum to the library’s coffers. Since 2015, library volunteers have marked their anniversary in a wholly self-generated event called Stannington Story Festival. Storytellers and authors, both local and not-so-local, gather and

tell their tales in a marquee (which looks strikingly like a very small big top) in Stannington Park next door to the library. Audiences have grown steadily at this event over its three years. Buoyed by the festival’s success, in 2017 the library staged an associated performance in the Lomas Hall, again as a fund-raiser, by no less a star than bard of Barnsley Ian McMillan, to much acclaim. And plans for 2018 are already coming together. “Stannington Library’s continuing existence really is a product of the grit, determination and hard work of local people,” Dot concludes. “Without them, the whole operation simply wouldn’t work.” Anyone interested in helping in any way can visit Stannington Library on Uppergate Road or call on: 0114 234 8732. CYCLING
The Tour de Yorkshire drew huge crowds to the region Image courtesy Alex Whitehead / SWPix
Uphill battle
SHEFFIELD’S ‘MAGNIFICENT SEVEN’ HAS QUICKLY ESTABLISHED ITSELF AS ONE OF THE BIGGEST AND TOUGHEST CYCLING EVENTS IN THE COUNTRY. COULD YOU SURVIVE THE CLIMB? ycling fever has gripped the country ever since the unforgettable 2014 Grand Depart, when the Tour de France hopped over the English Channel to Yorkshire for its opening stages. The response from locals was overwhelming, leading many long-standing Tour enthusiasts to observe they had never seen so many enthusiastic spectators lining the route to cheer on the riders. The lasting legacy of this once-in-a-lifetime sporting success is The Tour De Yorkshire, which was launched the following year and has established itself as one of the biggest and most popular events in the sporting calendar. And, the cycle craze that gripped our nation hasn’t stopped there, as The Magnificent

Seven cycle race will have a new base when it returns to Sheffield for the third time on 11 March. The event will start and finish in the picturesque Peak District village, Bradfield, to allow more entries and more space for parking. The race is one of four headline events of The Outdoor City Weekender, taking place at locations across Sheffield from 9 to 11 March. A cross between a sportive and a hill climb, the race will see 130 cyclists battle up seven of Sheffield’s toughest ascents. The 2018 route, which is slightly more than 26 miles long, presents each rider with over 4,200ft of climbing and inclines ranging from nine to 23 per cent. @SixerRMC
The race begins at 8.30am and takes in Mill Lee Road and Hoar Stones Road, Hagg Hill, Blake Street, Fern Road and Thrush Street, Birch House Avenue and Birks Wood Drive, Back Lane, and the infamous Cote de Bradfield, which was the final climb that challenged the world-class Tour de France riders at the Yorkshire Grand Depart in 2014. Event organiser Marc Etches said: “We’re really pleased to be part of The Outdoor City Weekender and are looking forward to showcasing our great city once more with the Magnificent Seven. “The event is unique in the UK and gives the competitors the opportunity to race up traffic-free closed roads, for which we thank Sheffield City Council. Professional riders are
CYCLING
usually the only ones who get to ride on closed roads so this is a great selling point for the event, as evidenced by the veteran’s category selling out on the first day, which was amazing. “We’re really looking forward to seeing the support from local residents, especially the crowds on Hagg Hill, Blake Street and the Thrush Street cobbles. “The route really showcases Sheffield as The Outdoor City and the riders will be treated to some spectacular views at the top of every climb, especially the highlight of this year’s route – the Cote de Bradfield.” Cyclists will ride with motorbike escorts and lead cars between each of the seven hills, and then gather at the bottom of each of the hills before racing for points to the summit. The first 15 to the top then receive points which count towards the grand prize of being crowned King or Queen of the mountains, for which they’ll receive a trophy. Both men and women over 16 are encouraged to ride with equal prize money for both categories and there’s also a prize for the over 40s, as the fastest veterans are awarded separate points and prizes. The ride is aimed at amateur club riders and, as well as capturing the imagination of local clubs, attracts cyclists from across the country to take up the seven hill challenge. Last year’s men’s champion Andy Nichols will be defending his title against tough competition from Cycling Sheffield’s Joe Clark who finished fourth in the National Hill Climb Championships, Calum Brown and Rick Bailey from B38 Underpin Racing and notable climber Andy Cunningham from All Terrain Cycles. Stand-out female favourite is Rebecca
Goodson, who missed out on first place last year by just one point, as well as 2017 entrants Molly Horsley Frost and Abbie Taylor. The veteran category sees some new riders stepping up, including James Allen from Sheffrec Cycling Club and Simon Warren as well as newcomers Simon Froberg and Olly Humphreys. All entrants will receive refreshments before and afterwards, and each rider will also receive a free cycling cap for their efforts. Cow bells will again be handed out to spectators along the route to help cheer the riders along the tough climbs. Councillor Mazher Iqbal, cabinet member
for business and investment at Sheffield City Council, said: “We encourage everybody to come out and cheer on the cyclists as they tackle our famous Sheffield hills. “We know from the thousands of local people who have lined the streets in recent years to watch the Tour de France Grand Depart, the Tour de Yorkshire and previous Magnificent Sevens that Sheffield people have great enthusiasm for cycling races. We’re sure this year will be no different.” For more information on The Outdoor City Weekender, visit the website at www.theoutdoorcity.co.uk/outdoor-cityweekender.

A place in the sun
A MUCH-LOVED DESTINATION FOR ALL LEVELS OF RIDER, MALLORCA NOW HAS A VERY SHEFFIELD CYCLING CONNECTION. angsett Cycles is one of the oldest cycle shops in the country, and recently they embarked on an exciting new venture in the sun with Mallorca Bike Hire. A family-run business established way back in 1890, Langsett Cycles has been an integral part of the cycling community in the Yorkshire/Derbyshire areas for years, but it’s now spreading its vast knowledge and professionalism to the beautiful island of Mallorca. Langsett Cycles really is a one-stop-shop for everything cycling. Their large landmark store on Infirmary Road houses all the latest road, mountain, city and children’s bikes with all the associated accessories and clothing to match. The workshop has been awarded the status of Shimano service centre and is fully equipped to carry out any repair by cytechtrained mechanics all at affordable prices. “After visiting Mallorca on a cycling holiday in my youth I instantly fell in love with the island and for years I’ve enjoyed running a popular cycling holiday from Langsett’s to the island. I always had the dream of having a home or a business there so with Mallorca Bike Hire I now have both. “Although hard work, I really am living the

dream and split my time between my business in Sheffield and Mallorca and look forward to coming home to Sheffield just as much as going back out to Mallorca, my son Alex however prefers the sun and runs business in Mallorca all year round,” said owner Andrew Elston. There’s a reason Mallorca is regarded as the greatest place on earth to cycle – quiet, high quality roads with challenging ascents and exhilarating descents, spectacular scenery with beautiful villages, cafes, and of course cake, it’s not too dissimilar to the Peak District. But with over 300 sunny days a year, maybe a bit warmer. As a result, Mallorca is the playground to most of the world’s greatest professional cycling teams including the all-conquering Team Sky, and Bradley Wiggins is often spotted as he has a home just around the corner from the store. Based in beautiful Puerto Pollensa in the north of the island, Mallorca Bike Hire offer the best quality carbon bikes and deliver them directly to your accommodation. Stocking bikes from top brands like Cannondale, Ridley and Orbea, each bike is prepared, serviced and set up to the customers own specification meaning you can @SixerRMC
take the stress, worry and cost out of taking your own bike and hire one that’s set up just like your own. And they don’t just hire out first-class road bikes. They now have an extensive selection of e-bikes, city and children’s bikes, so the whole family can enjoy an active trip away in the sun. As the hire business in Mallorca is proving so popular, Andrew and his team are offering a bike hire service at Langsett Cycles. The latest electric e-bikes are a real game changer – particularly in a city with seven hills. Whether you’re a beginner or skilled cyclist, you can enjoy the breath-taking views of the city or Peak District on a high quality hire bike provided by a reputable company, and of course, there’s new models to purchase once you’re hooked. EASTER EGGS
OUR WINNER Tesco Finest Salted Caramel Egg 310g, £9 A smooth Belgian milk chocolate base with creamy milk and white chocolate. Both are sweetened with crunchy caramel pieces and enhanced by a hint of sea salt... With a description like that, we were salivating before we’d even opened the box. The egg is split into two halves, so you can enjoy the best of both. As we split this thick and decadent egg in half, a few members of the panel even let out some “oohs” and “aahs”. The salt beautifully balances out the sweet caramel and chocolate, it’s an impressive size, well-presented and is egg-cellent value for money. The fact that we couldn’t help going back for seconds, was also a strong indicator that this was the best of the bunch.

own tasting panel were on hand to put some of the most delicious Easter products from some of the best chocolatiers around to the test. Read on to find out which we deemed the most egg-cellent and which one we crowned the top of the chocs.
BEST ALL-ROUNDER Betty’s Trio of Spring Flower Eggs 250g, £27.50 Not sure whether your loved-one likes milk, dark or white chocolate? This trio ticks all the boxes. The dark chocolate egg is rich with delicious depth of flavour, the white (or should we say silver?) chocolate was creamy and obviously of a high quality, while the milk chocolate was a good balance of the two. Like most products in Betty’s Easter range, they were beautifully hand-crafted and decorated with flower frosting. 42 Sixer | www.sixermagazine.co.uk

EASTER EGGS
BEST BOOZY CHOCOLATE Prestat Pink Popping Prosecco Easter Egg 170g, £17.50 Confectionary with a kick. Enveloped within this prosecco-flavoured chocolate egg are fizzing popping candy and strong prosecco-filled truffles. What’s more, it has the “By appointment to Her Majesty the Queen” seal of approval. And if it’s good enough for Liz, it’s good enough for us.
BEST FOR ALLERGIES Booja-Booja Around Midnight Espresso Easter Egg 35g, £9.99 Not only were we impressed by the gorgeously painted, egg-shaped wooden box this was presented in, we also couldn’t believe how deliciously silky these truffles were – especially considering they are organic and dairy, gluten and soya free. Coffee lovers will also enjoy the authentic flavour.
BEST FOR KIDS Thorntons White Chocolate Bunny 200g, £6 Thorntons is a must if you’ve got kids to buy for this Easter and this white chocolate bunny is a great choice. As well as being a decent size with a detailed kid-friendly design, you’re sure to get good quality chocolate from a high street favourite.
BEST FOR DARK CHOCOLATE LOVERS Chococo Luxury Madagascar MegaDark Egg 175g, £18 This one was certainly the coolest-looking of the bunch, with its geometric pattern and three layers of dark chocolate. If you know a true dark chocolate connoisseur, this bitter 85 per cent MegaDark egg is just the thing. Vegans and the ethically-minded can also rejoice, as the company strive to carefully source all their ingredients.
BEST FOR GROWN-UP KIDS Sainsbury’s Taste the Difference Swiss Chocolate Bunny 440g, £6 A grown-up take on a classic kid’s choice, this Easter treat from Sainsbury’s Taste The Difference range is a realistic twist on the usual cartoon-esque hollow bunny. This was such a work of art, it was a shame to behead it. But we were soon rewarded with smooth Swiss milk chocolate, which was easy to break up as it bent rather than snapped, therefore avoiding pesky crumbs – well, it would be a shame to waste any. @SixerRMC

elcome to Sixer Services Guide 2018 – a complete guide to all of the local businesses you’ll need to help improve your home. No matter how much we try, things can still go wrong. Whether it’s a broken boiler or something we’ve been meaning to sort for months such as tackling our overgrown gardens, it’s important that we nip these problems in the bud now, as the longer we leave them, the
W
worse and more expensive they can get. Thankfully, there are a number of experts and fully-qualified professionals in north Sheffield who can help. From painters and decorators, to roofing specialists, there’s always someone who can provide practical solutions to help turn your house into a home. All of these things will make your property a much more pleasant place to live and in the long term, increase its value. Whether you want to renovate your home or just give it a lick of paint, the next few pages are sure to point you in the right direction.

PROMOTION
Green, green grass NOW IS THE TIME TO START GETTING YOUR LAWN IN SHAPE FOR SUMMER. iving your house a spring clean is a popular activity this time of year and your garden deserves the same attention if you want it to look its best. When we do venture back outside, though, we are often faced with overgrown shrubbery and under-loved lawns, and bringing your garden back to life can seem like a daunting task. But it doesn’t have to be. As the weather gets milder, now is the perfect time to give your lawn some much needed TLC and keep it healthy and weed free in the months ahead. The milder winter means your lawn has probably continued growing all year and could have done with attention a little earlier than usual. First things first – it pays to take care of any bare patches that may have appeared. The best way to deal with them is to carefully rake the patch and then sow some grass seeds mixed with a little top-soil. It’s important not to let the seeds dry out, so remember to keep them well watered and you should see some sprouts appearing within a few days. Grass needs as much direct sunlight as possible to stay healthy and green, so raking up

any dead leaves and twigs is another important job and can be a great way to get the kids involved and develop their ‘green thumbs’. As a rule of thumb, the first dry and sunny day in March is the ideal time to give your lawn its first cut of the year. Cutting the grass too short, too soon, can attract unwanted weeds and moss, so to avoid that happening, make sure you use the highest blade setting on your lawnmower. Special fertilisers are available to use at this time of year to give grass the essential nutrients it needs to grow strong and give it a vibrant colour; these seasonal treatments have been specially developed to work in cooler temperatures. Spring weather conditions tend to result in a flourish of young weeds, and selecting a treatment that includes a herbicide can help to control brood-leaved weeds such as daisies, clovers, dandelions and buttercups. Once you’ve carried out basic maintenance on your lawn, it pays to plan ahead to prevent all your hard work in the spring going to waste, and to guarantee a beautiful lawn you can enjoy all summer long. Hotter weather and dry spells over the

summer can lead to your lawn turning yellow and drying up, but there are some really effective treatments out there that can help keep grass greener for longer, such as the Oasis treatment from local lawn care specialist GreenThumb. The surfactant attaches itself to the molecules in the soil to conserve any moisture, helping to reduce the amount of watering needed. Where soil type is mainly clay, which is common in the Sheffield region, the amount of water needed to keep grass green can be reduced by up to 80 per cent, so you can spend less time watering and more time enjoying your lawn. Give yourself another reason to be cheerful this spring and take care of your lawn now to enjoy the benefits of a luscious, green lawn year round. Call GreenThumb Sheffield on: 0114 276 0101 for a free lawn analysis or email: sheffield@greenthumb.co.uk GreenThumb Tel: 0114 276 0101 Email: sheffield@greenthumb.co.uk www.greenthumb.co.uk

National tennis charity Tennis For Free (TFF) has announced its 2017 awards and one Sheffield tennis group has netted an honour, recognising it as one of the best in the country. Hillsborough Park has won the title of Tennis For Free Best New UK Site of The Year 2017. Announcing the awards, the judges’ citation read: “Hillsborough Park is a fantastic collaboration of partners all forming to create a fantastic TFF environment. Sheffield City Council, the LTA and Parks Tennis CIC have all gone the extra mile to create a vibrant TFF session that has seen 467 attendances on TFF sessions since it launched in late summer. In addition, one member was also nominated as Tennis For Free Player of the Year. Alan Williams reached the final three, narrowly missing out on the top honour.” Receiving the award, lead coach at Hillsborough Park, Ryan Bagshaw, said: “It’s an honour to receive this award. We have a wonderful tennis community, full of amazingly friendly, funny and passionate people who attend Tennis For Free every week, whatever the weather. Our journey to create this scheme in the last few years has been incredible and I’m very proud to be part of it.” Councillor Mary Lea, Sheffield City Council’s cabinet member for culture, parks and leisure, added: “Tennis is an enjoyable way to get fit and everyone who plays helps us move closer to our goal of making Sheffield the most active city by 2020. “We are known as the Outdoor City and receiving this recognition, and an award last December from the Lawn Tennis Association for best community venue in Yorkshire for Millhouses Park, means Sheffield will soon be known as the city of tennis.” Tennis For Free is a UK charity which aims to create healthy, vibrant local tennis communities for free on public park courts creating new players of all ages and backgrounds. It is partnered with the LTA and joins the local authority to create two hours of free tennis every week at normally under-used tennis courts. Tennis For Free runs at Hillsborough Park every Saturday between 10am-12noon. You can register for Tennis For Free as follows: www.tennissheffield.com/tff. For more information, visit www.tennisforfree.com. Follow Tennis For Free on Twitter @tennisforfree and on Facebook.
Family-friendly Hillsborough café a hit JoJo’s Tot Spot was opened a year ago by local resident, Jo Maillard, who had a vision of a ‘family friendly café’ in the Hillsborough area. It was hard work getting everything together and training to be able to run a business but finally in 2017 they opened their doors to the public. The ethos of the café is to be welcoming to families in particular as there are no other cafes in the area that specialise as much for young children on their premises. The café is open to everyone and are pleased to say they have a broad spectrum of customers calling in for drinks/snacks/meals throughout the week. All food is homemade and reasonably priced and JoJo’s offer a takeaway service. Private bookings are considered for meetings, birthday parties etc. Opening times are usually 8.45am – 3/4pm depending on daily footfall.

Exhibition celebrates art up north Karen Sherwood, founder and director of Cupola Gallery has created a new body of paintings which reflect her time in, and passion for, the north of England, which she is exhibiting as part of Up North from 9 February to 10 March. As a fine art student, she fell in love with the Sheffield moors, but more recently, several trips to the stunning coastline of Northumberland have inspired a new body of work. It was the sea, the light, the colours, the history and structures of the north east coast which have sparked a new love affair. Always a fan of JMW Turner, light plays an important role in the paintings but increasingly, colour and textures are becoming the dominant feature of the work, often obscuring any topographical or figurative elements. Recognisable landmarks or structures still persist in some paintings alongside fully abstract pieces. Around 30 paintings will be on exhibition ranging in size from just a few inches square to over a metre. Paintings are mostly oil on board, paper and canvas alongside some mixed media works including collage and Karen’s beloved chalk pastels. “I have always loved the sea and the coast and the dramatic landscape of Scotland and the lakes, but it was a stay in a friend’s caravan in Seahouses, Northumberland, that kick-started my painting practice again not so long ago. “Some might find it strange, but I always feel slightly apprehensive about showing my own work in my own gallery, as it kind of feels like cheating. I do feel that I can be forgiven for this particular solo show though, as it is a gift to me as a way of mitigating the effects of a significant birthday! I am therefore having a ‘bit of a do’ at the gallery just before the exhibition closes.” View Karen’s work until 10 March or come to the Birthday closing party on Friday 9 March from 7.30pm at Cupola Gallery, 178a Middlewood Road, Sheffield, S6 1TD. All welcome – RSVP essential.
WELCOME TO MY OFFICE – Views from the roofs of S6 Simon Slater of Slater’s Aerial Services has a different ‘office view’ to most of us – a rooftop vista of Sheffield. But can you guess exactly where in S6 he was when he took these photographs? To find out, see next month’s Sixer or follow @SlatersAerials and @SixerRMC on Twitter – the answer will be revealed at the end of each month. Congratulations to those who correctly guessed where Simon was last month – Stannington Road. @SixerRMC

GO FOR THE GREENS!
LOOKING FOR A NEW HOBBY THIS SUMMER? HILLSBOROUGH PARK BOWLING IS JUST THE PLACE.
hat could be more peaceful on a sunny summer’s day than a game of bowls? A perfectly mown green, good companions along with a friendly sporting contest provides a real sense of community that makes crown green bowls one of the most enjoyable sports. Sheffield is no stranger to this sport and Hillsborough Park Bowling with its wellmaintained greens, classic pavilion and welcoming players, provides the ideal place to perfect your bowl. The club which was formed in 1908, is an original member of the Sheffield Parks Bowling Association and remains the hub of the city’s bowls scene, particularly in late July and early August when Civic Week is held, as it has been for over the last 50 years. The club has a fine tradition, with long standing members such as chairman Derek Ellis, who is entering his 60th year helping run the club in a variety of roles, and former British Veteran Parks Champion Colin Beal. Over the last year and upcoming months, the popular club is breathing a fresh new lease of life into the sport, by working with Friends of Hillsborough Park, Drink Wise, Age Well and SWFC Community Programme to organise a selection of open days for the community. These include Hillsborough Park Open Day on 15 April and a Drink Wise, Age Well Open Day on 23 April, at which anyone will be able to have a go at crown green bowls for free. The club is also hosting a disability bowling open day this summer, organised by Disability Bowls England and SYCCGBA with the intention of the club running
W
regular sessions and eventually applying for the Disability Kite Mark. The club is also exploring the opportunities to work with schools to further develop relationships within the local community. Recently the club has been undergoing some improvements in order to offer the best and most enjoyable bowling environment in South Yorkshire. The upper and lower greens have been part of a three-year maintenance plan in order to get them back up to the highest standard, whilst new benches have been added and shelters have been built on the lower green. Anyone is welcome at Hillsborough Bowling Club, which is why they have a selection of teams including the blind and partially sighted club. And, if you aren’t ready to compete in the leagues, they also offer social crown green bowls sessions. No matter what your skill set, there’s a place for you at Hillsborough Bowling and the experienced players are always willing to offer guidance, advice and support on improving your game. Bowls is a sport which can be enjoyed by all ages, so whether you are a beginner, county player or simply want to enjoy some social bowling visit Hillsborough Park Bowling Club. For more information on the open days, teams or to keep up to date with the latest news visit their Facebook page or call 07507 730066. @SixerRMC

HEROES
Year of the dog NICK GAVE UP ALCOHOL FOR A WHOLE YEAR TO RAISE MONEY FOR A CHARITY WHICH PROVIDES THE DISABLED WITH SUPPORT DOGS. BY RACHEL MARTIN.
strong-willed Sheffield man has raised an incredible £1,500 for charity Support Dogs by giving up alcohol for a year. Dog-lover Nick White, aged 43, from High Storrs, had hoped to raise £500 but by the end of his One Year No Beer challenge had smashed his target. Not a heavy drinker, but someone who’d been known to have a few at Christmas and birthdays, Nick said that thinking of his charity of choice during the long, dry 12-month spell gave him plenty of motivation. “I started the target small as I wasn’t a big drinker - gone are the days when I used to go out and drink heavily - so I was absolutely amazed to smash my target,” he said. Nick, a bat ecologist, raises money for charity every couple of years and this time wanted to do something a bit different. He was inspired to raise money for Support Dogs after hearing one of their disability assistance dog clients speak about her
A
‘Finding out how these animals can be trained and use their skills was fantastic.’ experiences and the difference her dog made to her life. Support Dogs, whose head office is in Brightside, provides and trains assistance dogs for children with autism and adults with epilepsy and physical disability, enabling them to lead more independent lives. “I have a black Labrador, Sam, and love him to bits. In his own way he supported me when I was going through a mild depression, and just having him around and having to walk him, a dog really lifts your mood I think. Dogs are so loving, and don’t ask for anything back. “I heard Support Dogs’ client Amanda Davidson speak, met and chatted to her and she was inspirational. Then I found out about Support Dogs being based in Sheffield but helping people 82 Sixer | www.sixermagazine.co.uk
all around the country. Finding out how these animals can be trained and use their skills was fantastic.” Nick decided to start his booze-free year just before Christmas last year. “I wanted to get the hardest bit out of the way first,” he confessed. His usual tipples of real ale, malt whisky and ‘the odd G&T on a summer’s evening’ went out of the window in favour first of Coke, then a succession of non-alcoholic beers. There were a few testing moments throughout the year – Nick’s wife’s 40th birthday for example, and his annual visit to the Test Match at Headingley - always a boozy affair - and having a nice cold beer at the end of a hot sunny day. But being the designated driver for 12 months had its advantages. “It’s changed my attitude to drinking – I never want to get to the point when I wake up in the morning feeling rough. It’s good to wake up and feel fine. I go running and enjoyed not losing out because of drinking the night before.” When the time came to start drinking again drew near, Nick says the craving got greater and greater but once the day came and he allowed himself a pint he found he wasn’t actually that bothered. “To celebrate I arranged to go out with a few friends, but I just had a couple of pints and stuck to that,” said Nick. “And my wife Rachel and I went to the Dales for a few days and we could go for walks and end up in the pub; it was nice to go in and have a pint. And I enjoyed Christmas this year! I’m just very grateful to everyone who donated and supported me during my 12 dry months.” Danny Anderson, fundraising manager for Support Dogs added: “We’re incredibly grateful to Nick for his fantastic fundraising efforts, and for the imaginative way that he chose to support us. “We rely entirely on the generosity of people like him to help fund dog our training programmes, which can truly transform the lives of many people with serious medical condition and disabilities.” To find out more and to donate to Support Dogs, visit www.supportdogs.org.uk. @SixerRMC

TRAVEL
Photos by Kathy Colgan
Plain sailing in Panama CARMEL STEWART RECENTLY ACHIEVED A LONG-HELD AMBITION TO TRANSIT THE PANAMA CANAL. HERE ARE SOME EXTRACTS FROM HER BLOG WHILE ON BOARD THE REGENT SEVEN SEAS NAVIGATOR.
Vive la difference The big difference between the independent traveller and the experienced cruiser is that the former hold on tight to their possessions, paperwork and passports, come what may. Experienced cruisers are altogether gentler, more trusting souls. The boss says hand over your passport at the beginning of the cruise and they do – not just for a few hours or even a few days but for the full duration of the excursion which, for some, could be as much as four months. For me, it has to do with the potential disasters every serial catastrophiser (such as myself) has at the forefront of their minds – the ‘what if ’ list of imagined problems. These will include an unforeseen event which will require paying a large bill, arrest for mistaken identity, detention for an unintentional misdemeanour (or for failure to pay that aforementioned large bill) and, on this trip, the need to buy an airline ticket to the next port due to one of the possible catastrophes actually becoming a reality. The point is, every solution includes the production of a passport which is not possible when my passport is locked on board inside the captain’s safe and I am locked inside the local jail. So, when the cruiser and the independent traveller meet, a compromise is called for. Suggestions on a post card, please.
Plain sailing After the initial clash of cultures, we have settled into our first cruise very well. By we I mean my Australian-based sister, Kathy, with whom I have been travelling for the past umpteen years. When booking, we chose our cabin with care opting for a mid-ship, twin berth, with balcony. Taking the hit for an all-inclusive deal has taken much of the hassle out of the whole process. We can eat where and when we like; we can drink where and when we like; and we can take part in lectures, activities and shore excursions on the same bases. So, when you are researching your cruise, have a calculator close by. All-inclusive has an expensive initial outlay but, once you have delved into your savings account searched every pocket and piggybank to gather together the 92 Sixer | www.sixermagazine.co.uk
required cash, that’s it. By contrast, a pay-as-you-go cruise will have you constantly checking to make sure you haven’t exceeded your allocated budget. But inevitably, there are things that will cost extra. For example, in my personalised Passages newsletter – thoughtfully delivered to every cabin every evening – I note that I can have an ‘Age Defying Pedicure’ for ‘Just $115’. The problem is that, while my feet may well acquire a more youthful appearance, the rest of me is ageing with alarming alacrity. The only real surprise is how rocky the journey has been. I have always been certain that a large vessel will be pretty stable, but the weather is such that everyone is rolling along the corridors – tail-end of the hurricane season will do that. @SixerRMC
A cruise ship negotiating the Gatun Locks on the Panama Canal at Colon
Rolling Along Things have calmed down considerably since those first few nights and we have made very rapid progress, almost imperceptibly. We visited the Cayman Islands, which were very pretty and very English – roundabouts, driving on the left etc. Had hoped to ‘interact’ with turtles and stingrays but cancelled due to the bad weather so visited the botanical park instead. A few days later we visited Tayrona Park in Colombia where the guide was useless and the trip pointless. He knew nothing about the flora and fauna of the area. In addition, the loos were awful, no water either to flush or wash hands – bit yuk, frankly. But I enjoyed Cartagena, a little further up the Colombian coast, the following day, mainly because I chose the soft option – the hop-on, hop off tour during which I hopped on at the beginning and hopped off at the end. Kathy did similarly but added a city stroll to her itinerary and took some great pics showing the contrast between the old and the new. The day after was the day I had been waiting for – the transit of the Panama Canal – and we did so in style.
TRAVEL
A dream come true We had been given an excellent talk the day before by the on-board Smithsonian Lecturer, Terry Bishop, so were well primed as to the history and the lay-out of the locks and the lake. We arrived early in the morning and were provided with an intermittent commentary which was not quite up to the Bishop’s standard but certainly added to the occasion. The captain directed operations from a mobile workstation on a cantilevered balcony so that he had an uninterrupted view of the canal and we had an uninterrupted view of him. We could see what was happening from every angle all day – it was really terrific. And, if anyone felt the need of a lie down during the long day, they still had a ringside seat, as it were, via the bridge dash cam relay to all cabins 24/7 throughout the entire cruise. For those who like the facts and figures, the Panama Canal is 48 miles long and connects the Atlantic and Pacific oceans, providing a conduit for ships and boats of all shapes and sizes. It comprises three sets of locks at either end of the Gatun Lake. The work was
originally begun by the French in 1881 but they did not have the required engineering expertise. The Americans took over the project in 1904 and the Canal finally opened in the summer of 1914. Its construction cost billions of dollars and thousands of lives. Small towing trains, known as mules, guided us through the locks. They run on tracks alongside, ensuring we don’t veer off course. Additional guide ropes are used to help the process. Alongside the original canal, there now runs a wider transit corridor which can accommodate larger commercial shipping. We were given maps of the canal and, later that evening, received personalised certificates as a memento but we didn’t really need a reminder. It was a brilliant day which really lived up to expectations with not even a minor hiccup let alone a catastrophe. @SixerRMC
